Abstract:We report the use of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with a DNA library of chromosome 1-specific probes to confirm the karyotype, 46,XY,15+der15,t(1;15)(q32.1; q26.3), obtained by prenatal periumbilical blood sampling from a fetus who exhibited multiple abnormalities by ultrasound examination. GTG-banding of chromosomes obtained from the mother showed a normal karyotype, while the father was unavailable for study. The propositus was born at 37 weeks gestation and survived for several weeks. Cytogenetic analysis performed after the birth of the male infant with multiple anomalies verified partial trisomy 1q. This patient is compared with other partial trisomy 1q patients reported in the literature. The usefulness of FISH is demonstrated in situations where fetal abnormalities are present with de novo chromosomal rearrangements where paternal chromosomes are unavailable for study.
Sun protection changes among diverse elementary schoolchildren participating in a sun safety intervention: A latent transition analysis of a randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Children are a priority population for skin cancer prevention as excessive sun exposure in childhood increases the risk of melanoma in adulthood. The complexity of sun protective behaviors has posed measurement challenges for trials testing intervention efficacy. The current study evaluated a sun safety intervention for schoolchildren using latent transition analysis (LTA) to examine patterns of sun protection behaviors over time. A three-armed randomized controlled trial was conducted between 2012 and 2016 with two intervention groups (N = 3368) and an observation-only control group (N = 342) among 4th and 5th graders from 24 public schools in Los Angeles County. Both interventions conditions were grouped and compared to controls. Five self-reported sun protective behaviors were measured at baseline and three-month follow-up: use of sunscreen, long sleeves, long pants, hats, and shade seeking. Participants comprised 3710 schoolchildren, mean age 9 years, 47% female and 69% Latino. At baseline, four patterns of sun protection behaviors were found: children who engaged in 1) all sun protective behaviors; 2) few protective behaviors; 3) protective clothing and shade only; and 4) hats only. Children in the control group were likely to remain in their baseline status or transition to a less protective status at three-month follow-up. By contrast, 30% of children in the intervention group transitioned to a more protective status at follow-up. In this RCT of a sun safety intervention, children in the intervention transitioned to more protective behaviors compared to controls. Using LTA enriches understanding of intervention efficacy by modeling the complexity of sun protection behaviors over time. Abstract:Background: Melanoma, the most fatal form of skin cancer, is rising at a rate faster than that of all preventable cancers except lung cancer in the United States. Childhood exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light increases the risk for skin cancer as an adult; thus starting positive sun protection habits early may be key to reducing incidence. Methods: We evaluated the US Environmental Protection Agency's SunWise School Program, a national, environmental education program for sun safety of children in primary and secondary schools (kindergarten through eighth grade). The program was evaluated with surveys administered to participating students. An identical 18-question, self-administered survey was completed by students (median age, 10 years) in the classroom before and immediately after the SunWise educational program. Results: Surveys were completed by students in 40 schools before (pretests; n = 1894) and after the program was presented (post-tests; n = 1815). Significant improvement was noted for the 3 knowledge variables: appropriate type of sunscreen to be used for outdoor play, highest UV Index number, and need for hats and shirts outside. Intentions to play in the shade increased from 73% to 78% (P <.001), with more modest changes in intentions to use sunscreen. Attitudes regarding healthiness of a tan also decreased significantly. Conclusions: Brief, standardized sun protection education can be efficiently interwoven into school health education and result in improvements in knowledge and positive intentions for sun protection.

Abstract:Seed oils are important natural resources used in the processing and preparation of food. Histone modifications represent key epigenetic mechanisms that regulate gene expression, plant growth and development. However, histone modification events during fatty acid (FA) biosynthesis are not well understood. Here, we demonstrate that a mutation of the histone acetyltransferase GCN5 can decrease the ratio of α-linolenic acid (ALA) to linoleic acid (LA) in seed oil. Using RNA-Seq and ChIP assays, we identified FAD3, LACS2, LPP3 and PLAIIIβ as the targets of GCN5. Notably, the GCN5-dependent H3K9/14 acetylation of FAD3 determined the expression levels of FAD3 in Arabidopsis thaliana seeds, and the ratio of ALA/LA in the gcn5 mutant was rescued to the wild-type levels through the overexpression of FAD3. The results of this study indicated that GCN5 modulated FA biosynthesis by affecting the acetylation levels of FAD3. We provide evidence that histone acetylation is involved in FA biosynthesis in Arabidopsis seeds and might contribute to the optimization of the nutritional structure of edible oils through epigenetic engineering.

Abstract:Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis worldwide. Many factors are involved in the development of skin cancers, but ultraviolet (UV) light exposure is the most modifiable. Our lifetime cumulative UV exposure may be a result of poor sun protection practices in childhood and adolescence. Modifying the attitudes and behaviors of children can be done in the classroom, at recreational activities, and at home. A review of the literature was conducted using Embase and PubMed to examine the relationship between attitudes and behaviors as they relate to sun protection strategies. Well-developed, standardized sun protection educational programs are needed to instruct children and adolescents. Individualized counseling from physicians or online programs is needed to help parents increase sun-safe standards for their children. Many young women utilize indoor tanning beds frequently, but many instructional programs increased their tanning bed usage. Time should be allotted at schools, sports practices, camps, and other outdoor activities for sunscreen reapplication. Many parents and children report the media is their primary source of information about sun safety. Media outlets may positively change attitudes and behaviors when reporting about sun safety. Parents and children need individualized programs or counseling to reduce ultraviolet (UV) exposure and increase sun protection. At-risk populations need tailored instruction, but few strategies have worked to decrease UV exposure.

Abstract:Background . Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in the United States (US). However, knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes regarding sun protection vary among the general population. The purpose of this study is to examine sun protection behaviors of low-income primary care patients and assess the association between these health behaviors and the self-efficacy, susceptibility, and skin cancer awareness. Methods . Uninsured primary care patients utilizing a free clinic ( N = 551 ) completed a self-administered survey in May and June 2015. Results . Using sunscreen was the least common tactic among the participants of this study. Skin cancer awareness and self-efficacy are important to improve sun protection behaviors. Spanish speakers may have lower levels of skin care awareness compared to US born and non-US born English speakers. Male and female participants use different sun protection methods. Conclusion . It is important to increase skin cancer awareness with self-efficacy interventions as well as education on low-cost sun protection methods. Spanish speaking patients would be a target population for promoting awareness. Male and female patients would need separate gender-specific sun protection education. Future studies should implement educational programs and assess the effectiveness of the programs to further promote skin cancer prevention among underserved populations.

Abstract:Introduction: Sun protection early in life is necessary to prevent skin cancer. Therefore, youth sun safety education is imperative. However, such programs have often failed to bring about behavioral change in youths. Objectives: We evaluated a sun safety educational program’s effectiveness in improving elementary school students’ knowledge of sun safety, confidence in their ability to explain the importance of sun protection, and their understanding of sunscreen labels. Methods: A 1.5-hour program was conducted for the fourth-grade students. 45 of the 53 students participated in the study and completed the pre- and post-surveys, a response rate of 84%. These surveys were identical, consisting of four questions rated on a Likert scale to assess changes in the students’ knowledge, confidence, and understanding regarding sun protection. Results: The students overall had a statistically significant increase in their knowledge of sun safety and sun protective measures, confidence in their ability to explain the importance of sun protection, and their understanding of sunscreen labels. Conclusions: In alignment with the current literature, this study demonstrates the importance of school-based sun safety programs and notably shows that such programs can increase youth’s understanding of sunscreen labels and confidence in explaining the importance of sun protection. It is our hope that the program will cause increased practice of sun protective behaviors among the students. Further research is needed to determine how effective such programs are in increasing the practice of sun protective behaviors in youths.

Abstract:An efficient and convenient method for degradation of Acid orange 3 (A03) dye from aqueous solution by combination of Fly ash/H 2 O 2 and ultrasound irradiation is reported. The effects of the relevant operating conditions (pH value, dye concentration, H 2 O 2 concentration, dosage of Fly ash and different reaction system) on the degradation of A03 were also observed. The combination method was found to be effective and could yield better results than either sonolysis or Fenton-like oxidation individually. Removal of 96% was obtained under the optimum conditions (dye concentration, 100 mg/L; H 2 O 2 , 5.4 mM; Fly ash, 2.5 g/L; pH 3, ultrasonic irradiation frequency of 25 kHz, room temperature). The process of the degradation follows Behnajady's kinetic mathematical model.

Abstract:Objective : Examine the impact of a community-based, multi-component sun intervention on the campus of Lee College in Baytown, Texas. Participants : 735 respondents completed the survey as part of a range of campus topics. Methods : Survey data on the program were gathered through an emailed campus-wide survey to better understand the community's perceptions and awareness as well as campaign effectiveness over time. Results : Sun safety self-efficacy and awareness of the importance of sun safety behaviors were high in the community. Students reported a lower level of sun safety self-efficacy than employees. Open-ended responses also offered insight into complex views some community members hold about sun-safety behavior, raising questions about the effectiveness of sunscreen and the need for vitamin D. Conclusions : The paper found high awareness of sun-safe behaviors, high self-efficacy in taking personal action, and appreciation for the institutional effort to care for the community.

Abstract:Introduction: Children’s skin is particularly susceptible to the carcinogenic effects of ultraviolet radiation. Young children are dependent on sun protection measures taken by parents and other caregivers. Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate parental sun protection behavior and sun protection measures at preschool at 2 points in time (2010/11 and 2018/19) in Bavaria and to test for a secular trend. Methods: Two cross-sectional surveys were carried out. For each survey, more than 4,000 parents of preschoolers completed a self-administered questionnaire about parental sun protection behavior and sun protection measures at preschool. To identify possible associations between parental sun protection behavior and sociodemographic characteristics, logistic regression analysis was carried out. Results: In the survey of 2018/19, 6 out of 8 sun protection measures are adequately applied by over two-thirds of the parents. Two out of 8 sun protection measures are adequately applied by less than one-third of the parents. Those 2 measures are aligning sun protection to actual UV index and preschoolers wearing sunglasses. The comparison of the study population of the survey of 2010/11 and of 2018/19 shows an improvement in parental sun protection behavior for 7 out of 8 sun protection measures. In both surveys more than 80% of parents state that preschool staff ensures preschoolers wearing sun hats and sunscreen outside on sunny days. Conclusion: Future campaigns should focus on the use of sunglasses and promote the UV index, as these sun protection measures are used very little.

Abstract:Background“Convive con el Sol” (Living with the sun) is an educational programme to promote education about sun exposure and healthy photoprotection habits among Spanish children.ObjectivesThis study evaluated the effects of the “Convive con el Sol” school-based sun protection programme on the sun safety habits, attitudes, knowledge, and practices in preschool and first-year primary school students.Materials & MethodsA quasi-experimental pilot study was established with a pre-test/post-test design and without a control group to evaluate the efficacy of the “Convive con el Sol” programme in children aged 3–8 years. Two questionnaires were used to evaluate the programme: the CHRESI questionnaire and the SolSano questionnaire.ResultsSeven educational centres participated in the study. The number of completed baseline questionnaires was 351 for the CHRESI survey and 226 for the SolSano survey. After the intervention, the students improved their sun protection practices; fewer students went to the beach or swimming-pool at noon (9.8% vs 5.5%; p = 0.03), and more schoolchildren used cream with an SPF rating >15 (37.6% vs 76.2%; p <0.01) and repeatedly applied sunscreen if continuously exposed (67.4% vs 82.7%; p <0.01).ConclusionOur findings show that the “Convive con el Sol” educational intervention improved photoprotection practices in children aged 3–8 years, but did not reduce the percentage of sunburned children. This pilot study serves as a starting point for designing educational interventions, targeting students, teachers, and families

Abstract:Sun protection during pregnancy is critical for both maternal and infant skin cancer prevention, yet gaps remain in addressing this behavior in pre and postnatal settings. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a peer-led intervention for expectant mothers' sun protection behaviors for themselves and their newborns and examine the preliminary effects on mothers' skin cancer knowledge, attitudes, and sun protection behaviors for themselves and their infants. Expectant mothers were recruited from medical clinics and community settings and were asked to complete surveys and interviews. The intervention, informed by the Cognitive-Social Health Information Processing model, consisted of two peer coach-led remote sessions. The majority of mothers (81%) attended both intervention sessions and reported increased understanding of (88%) and improved sun protection practices for themselves (79%; such as wearing sunscreen and reapplying sunscreen while outside). Additionally, 89% agreed that SUNRISE content is beneficial for new mothers. Moreover, maternal self-efficacy for implementing sun protection, intention to implement sun-safe behaviors for their infants, and knowledge of infant skin cancer prevention also increased with large effect sizes ( d = 0.8–1.3). Mothers reported significantly decreased barriers to sun safety pre- to post-intervention. Feasibility of recruitment and delivery of a peer-led intervention focused on sun safety in women and their infants was high, and the intervention was acceptable to participating women. Mothers improved their sun protection behaviors over time, and implementation of sun protection behaviors for their infants was high. Intervention efficacy with a larger and more diverse sample is warranted, with longer follow-up.

Abstract:Objective: Two methods for scaling up an evidence-based occupational sun protection program were compared. Methods: Regional districts (n = 138) in 21 state Departments of Transportation throughout the United States were randomized to receive the Go Sun Smart at Work program via in-person or digital scalability methods in 2019-2022 in 1:2 ratio. Managers completed pretest and posttest surveys and employees completed posttest surveys. Due to the COVID pandemic, only posttest measures were analyzed (n = 255 managers; n = 1387 employees). Results: After scale-up, more employees reported training (b = 0.381, p = 0.021) and communication (b = 0.112, p = 0.049) at workplaces in in-person rather than digital strategy. There were no differences in managers' reports of sun protection training, communication, or actions by scalability method (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Occupational sun protection was implemented during program scale up and employees recalled training/communication more in the in-person than digital strategy.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE. The SunWise School Program is a school-based sun safety education program that was developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency and aims to teach children how to protect themselves from overexposure to the sun. The objectives of this study were to assess the health benefits of the SunWise School Program and use economic analysis to determine the program's net benefits and cost-effectiveness. METHODS. Standard cost/benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis methods were used. Intervention costs were measured as program costs estimated to be incurred by the US government, which funds SunWise, using 3 funding scenarios. Health outcomes were measured as skin cancer cases and premature mortalities averted and quality-adjusted life-years saved. These health outcomes were modeled using an effectiveness evaluation of SunWise based on pretest and posttest surveys administered to students who participated in the program and the Environmental Protection Agency's peer-reviewed Atmospheric and Health Effects Framework model. Costs averted were measured as direct medical costs and costs of productivity losses averted as a result of SunWise. Net benefits were measured as the difference between costs averted and program costs. RESULTS. Economic analysis indicated that if the SunWise School Program continues through 2015 at current funding levels, then it should avert >50 premature deaths, nearly 11000 skin cancer cases, and 960 quality-adjusted life-years (undiscounted) among its participants. For every dollar invested in SunWise, between approximately $2 and $4 in medical care costs and productivity losses are saved, depending on the funding scenario. CONCLUSIONS. From a cost/benefit and cost-effectiveness perspective, it is worthwhile to educate children about sun safety; small to modest behavioral impacts may result in significant reductions in skin cancer incidence and mortality.
