Abstract:Summary Blood levels of ketone bodies, glucose, and fats in pregnant rats were altered by fasting and by pancreatectomy. The concentration of ketones and glucose in fetal blood changed with maternal level, whereas the lipids were independent of maternal level. Ketone bodies appear to cross the placenta as rapidly as glucose.

Abstract:UNLABELLED Sleep is basic for physical and cognitive development and some studies have suggested that there may be an association between sleep disorders (SD) and cognitive dysfunction (CD) in children. Little is known, however, about SD and cognition in 7-10-year-old children, a fact that motivated the present study. METHOD We applied an SD questionnaire in 1180 children, 547 with SD and 633 without SD (CG), to assess cognition with a screening test (Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test - BT). RESULTS We observed a similar frequency of CD in the children with SD (39%) and that ot the CG (40%). The 8-year-old children with SD presented a lower prevalence of CD than the CG (SD=6%, n=6; CG=13%, n=16; p=0.04). CONCLUSION The frequency of children with CD was equal in the study and control groups when considering the total sample (7- to 10-year-old children). In contrast to our expectations, the SD group of 8-year-old children presented a lower frequency of CD than the control group.
Effect of Dietary Supplementation of Glycerol Monolaurate on Growth Performance, Digestive Enzymes, Serum Immune and Antioxidant Parameters, and Intestinal Morphology in Black Sea Bream

Abstract:An eight-week feeding trial was conducted to examine the impact of dietary supplementation with glycerol monolaurate (GML) on juvenile black sea bream. A basal diet was formulated containing 24% fish meal, while five additional diets were prepared, each supplemented with varying levels of GML: GML1 (0.01%), GML2 (0.02%), GML3 (0.04%), GML4 (0.08%), and GML5 (0.16%). Triplicate tanks were randomly allocated to each diet, each containing 20 fish with an initial weight of 1.55 ± 0.05 g. By the trial’s end, the GML3 group displayed a notably higher final body weight (FBW), weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), and protein efficiency ratio (PER) compared to the other groups (p < 0.05), but the FCR was significantly higher in the control group. However, no significant differences were observed in the MFI, PPV, CF, HSI, IPF, VSI, or SR among the groups (p > 0.05). Regarding the proximate compositions of the dorsal muscle and whole body, no substantial differences were observed across the groups (p > 0.05). Additionally, there were no significant variations in digestive enzyme activity (p > 0.05), serum immune, or biochemical parameters in the midgut and hindgut among the treatment groups. But in the serum immune response IgM, C3 and C4 were significantly higher in the GML3 group as compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). However, the GML3 group exhibited significantly greater fore-intestinal villus height, crypt depth, villus height per crypt depth, and the number of goblet cells per villus compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). Overall, GML supplementation, particularly GML3, significantly improved growth indicators like the final body weight and intestinal morphology. While certain parameters remained unaffected, these findings suggest GML’s potential as a beneficial dietary supplement in fish diets.

Abstract:Remarkably high accumulation of Tc-99m-MDP is seen in the skull on bone scintigraphy of patients with renal osteodystrophy (ROD), especially with secondary hyperparathyroidism. For the quantitative evaluation, the Factor Analysis (FA) was used for the early phase of bone scan. Tc-99m-MDP (14.8 MBq/body weight kg) was injected as a bolus through the medial antecubital vein. Dynamic acquisition of 40 x 30 sec frames were performed in a 64 x 64 matrix. For pre-processing, nine points smoothing was carried out, and then the region of interest was set on the frontal image of the head for the FA. The FA was performed with an 8 x 8 sampling corresponding to 64 dixels from 4,096 dixels. Bone factor was clearly extracted by the FA. Then, two original parameters were calculated. One is the bone radionuclide uptake counts (Bu) which is the product of the total radionuclide counts of skull and the contribution ratio, the other is the uptake ratio (Br) derived by the time activity curve (physiological component) of the FA. These parameters of ROD were significantly different compared to those of controls. The FA seems to be useful in quantitative evaluation of bone mineral dynamics.
Assessment of Full-Fat Tenebrio molitor as Feed Ingredient for Solea senegalensis: Effects on Growth Performance and Lipid Profile

Abstract:Tenebrio molitor (TM) is considered as one of the most promising protein sources for replacing fish meal in aquafeeds, among other things because it is rich in protein, a good source of micronutrients and has a low carbon footprint and land use. However, the main drawback of TM is its fatty acid profile, in particular its low content of n-3 PUFA. This study evaluates the effects of partially replacing plant or marine-derived with full-fat TM meal at two different levels on growth performance and lipid profiles of Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis). For this purpose, a control diet (CTRL) and four experimental isoproteic (53%) and isolipidic (16%) diets were formulated containing 5 and 10% TM meal replacing mostly fish meal (FM5 and FM10), or 10 and 15% TM meal replacing mostly plant meal (PP10 and PP15). Fish (215 g) were fed at 1% of their body weight for 98 days. The final body weight of fish fed the experimental diets containing TM meal was not different from that of fish fed the CTRL diet (289 g). However, the inclusion of TM meal resulted in a gradual improvement in growth rate and feed efficiency in both cases (replacement of fish or plant meals), and significant differences in specific growth rate (SGR) were observed between fish fed the CTRL diet (SGR = 0.30% day-1) and those fed diets with the highest TM meal content (PP15; SGR = 0.35% day-1). The experimental groups did not show any differences in the protein content of the muscle (19.6% w/w). However, significant differences were observed in the total lipid content of the muscle, with the FM10, PP10, and PP15 groups having the lowest muscle lipid contents (2.2% ww). These fish also showed the lowest neutral lipid content in muscle (6.6% dw), but no differences were observed in the total phospholipid content (2.6% dw). Regarding the fatty acid profile, fish fed FM10, PP10 and PP15 had lower levels of linoleic acid (18:2n-6) and higher levels of oleic acid (18:1n-9) in liver and muscle compared to fish fed CTRL. However, no differences were found between fish fed CTRL and TM-based diets for docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) and total n-3 PUFA in liver and muscle. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that full-fat TM inclusion up to 15% in S. senegalensis diets had no negative effects or even some positive effects on fish survival, growth performance, nutrient utilization and flesh quality.
Biofortified Diets Containing Algae and Selenised Yeast: Effects on Growth Performance, Nutrient Utilization, and Tissue Composition of Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata)

Abstract:Efforts have been made to find natural, highly nutritious alternatives to replace fish meal (FM) and fish oil (FO), which can simultaneously promote fish health and improve the nutritional quality of filets for human consumption. This study evaluated the impact of biofortified diets containing microalgae (as replacement for FM and FO), macroalgae (as natural source of iodine) and selenised yeast (organic source of selenium) on gilthead seabream growth, nutrient utilization, tissue composition and gene expression. A control diet (CTRL) with 15% FM and 5.5% FO was compared with three experimental diets (AD1, AD2, and AD3), where a microalgae blend ( Chlorella sp., Tetraselmis sp., and DHA-rich Schizochytrium sp.) replaced 33% of FM. Diet AD1 contained 20% less FO. Diets were supplemented with Laminaria digitata (0.4% AD1 and AD2; 0.8% AD3) and selenised yeast (0.02% AD1 and AD2; 0.04% AD3). After feeding the experimental diets for 12 weeks, growth was similar in fish fed AD1, AD2, and CTRL, indicating that microalgae meal can partially replace both FM and FO in diets for seabream. But AD3 suppressed fish growth, suggesting that L. digitata and selenised yeast supplementation should be kept under 0.8 and 0.04%, respectively. Despite lower lipid intake and decreased PUFAs bioavailability in fish fed AD3, compared to CTRL, hepatic elovl5 was upregulated resulting in a significant increase of muscle EPA + DHA. Indeed, filets of fish fed AD2 and AD3 provided the highest EPA + DHA contents (0.7 g 100 g –1 ), that are well above the minimum recommended values for human consumption. Fish consuming the AD diets had a higher retention and gain of selenium, while iodine gain remained similar among diets. Upregulation of selenoproteins ( gpx1 , selk , and dio2 ) was observed in liver of fish fed AD1, but diets had limited impact on fish antioxidant status. Overall, results indicate that the tested microalgae are good sources of protein and lipids, with their LC-PUFAs being effectively accumulated in seabream muscle. Selenised yeast is a good fortification vehicle to increase selenium levels in fish, but efforts should be placed to find new strategies to fortify fish in iodine.

Abstract:Abstract Microalgae have been used as live food in aquatic species. In recent years, the interest in microalgae has considerably increased, thanks to the evolution of production techniques that have identified them as an ecologically attractive aquafeed ingredient. The present study provides the first data about the effects of dietary inclusion of a microalgae consortium grown in a high-rate algal pond system on zootechnical performance, morphometric indices, and dietary nutrient digestibility as well as morphology and functionality of the digestive system of European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax . A dietary treatment including a commercial mono-cultured microalgae ( Nannochloropsis sp.) biomass was used for comparison. Six hundred and thirty-six European sea bass juveniles (18 ± 0.28 g) were randomly allotted into 12 experimental groups and fed 4 different diets for 10 weeks: a control diet based on fish meal, fish oil, and plant protein sources; a diet including 10% of Nannochloropsis spp. biomass (100 g/kg diet); and two diets including two levels (10% and 20%) of the microalgal consortium (100 and 200 g/kg diet) . Even at the highest dietary inclusion level, the microalgal consortium (200 g/kg diet) did not affect feed palatability and fish growth performance. A significant decrease in the apparent digestibility of dry matter, protein, and energy was observed in diets including 10 and 20% of the microalgal consortium, but all fish exhibited a well-preserved intestinal histomorphology. Moreover, dietary inclusion with the microalgal consortium significantly increased the enzymatic activity of maltase, sucrase-isomaltase, and ɤ-glutamil transpeptidase in the distal intestine of the treated European sea bass. Algal consortium grown using fish farm effluents represents an attempt to enhance the utilization of natural biomasses in aquafeeds when used at 10 % as substitute of vegetable ingredients in diet for European sea bass.

Abstract:Much has been learnt about oxidative stress from studies of Escherichia coli. Key regulators of the adaptive responses in this organism are the SoxRS and OxyR transcription factors, which induce the expression of antioxidant activities in response to O2*- and H2O2 stress, respectively. Recently, a variety of biochemical assays together with the characterization of strains carrying mutations affecting the antioxidant activities and the regulators have given general insights into the sources of oxidative stress, the damage caused by oxidative stress, defenses against the oxidative stress, and the mechanisms by which the stress is perceived. These studies have also shown that the oxidative stress responses are intimately coupled to other regulatory networks in the cell.
Evaluation of Aurantiochytrium mangrovei Biomass Grown on Digestate as a Sustainable Feed Ingredient of Sea Bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, Juveniles and Larvae

Abstract:The use of microalgae as a sustainable source of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) as an alternative to fish oils from small pelagic fish (e.g., anchovy, sardine) has received growing interest in the past few years. The present study aimed to: (i) produce Aurantiochytrium mangrovei biomass by heterotrophic fermentation using a medium containing anaerobic digestion liquid effluent, and (ii) evaluate a biomass rich in n-3 LC-PUFA and good quality proteins as a feed ingredient for sea bass juveniles and larvae. Two 800 L bioreactors were used to produce Aurantiochytrium biomass in non-axenic conditions. Biomass was then filtered through a crossflow filtration system (300 Kda ceramic membrane) and freeze-dried. Sea bass juveniles (32.7 ± 4.2 g) were fed both a control diet and a diet containing 15% of freeze-dried A. mangrovei biomass for 38 days. Juvenile survival percentage was 90% on average in both dietary conditions. Similar growth was observed between fish fed with both diets, demonstrating the feasibility to replace 15% of a standard fish feed by Aurantiochytrium biomass. The liver of sea bass juveniles fed with the A. mangrovei diet contained significantly higher proportions of 22:6n-3, 22:5n-6, and 20:4n-6 than those fed with the control diet, while the proportions of 16:0, 16:1n-7, and 18:1n-9 were significantly lower. The secondary oxidation, as measured by malonylaldehyde (MDA) content, in the liver and muscle of juveniles fed with the microalgae diet tended to be higher than in fish fed the control diet, but the differences were not statistically significant. Although the larvae survival percentage was low for all the tanks after 41 days of rearing, the inclusion of 15% of hydrolyzed A. mangrovei biomass in the larvae micro-diet did not impair the development of sea bass larvae and only marginally affected their lipid composition. In the future, we have to further optimize a sustainable workflow between Aurantiochytrium cultivation and fish feed production and confirm the zootechnical and biochemical results.

Abstract:AbstractThis study analyses the effects of dietary lipid level and source on lipid absorption and metabolism in Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis). Juvenile fish were fed 4 experimental diets containing either 100 % fish oil (FO) or 25 % FO and 75 % vegetable oil (VO; rapeseed, linseed and soybean oils) at two lipid levels (~8 or ~18 %). Effects were assessed on fish performance, body proximate composition and lipid accumulation, activity of hepatic lipogenic and fatty acid oxidative enzymes and, finally, on the expression of genes related to lipid metabolism in liver and intestine, and to intestinal absorption, both pre‐ and postprandially. Increased dietary lipid level had no major effects on growth and feeding performance (FCR), although fish fed FO had marginally better growth. Nevertheless, diets induced significant changes in lipid accumulation and metabolism. Hepatic lipid deposits were higher in fish fed VO, associated to increased hepatic ATP citrate lyase activity and up‐regulated carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (cpt1) mRNA levels post‐prandially. However, lipid level had a larger effect on gene expression of metabolic (lipogenesis and β‐oxidation) genes than lipid source, mostly at fasting. High dietary lipid level down‐regulated fatty acid synthase expression in liver and intestine, and increased cpt1 mRNA in liver. Large lipid accumulations were observed in the enterocytes of fish fed high lipid diets. This was possibly a result of a poor capacity to adapt to high dietary lipid level, as most genes involved in intestinal absorption were not regulated in response to the diet.

Abstract:Single-cell ingredients (SCI) are considered promising nutrient sources which are produced using environmentally friendly biotechnological processes. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the replacement of fishmeal, plant protein sources, and fish oil with SCI in organic feeds for European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Bacterial protein, yeast protein, and microalgae were used to replace fishmeal trimmings, soya bean meal, and fish oil from trimmings. Triplicate groups (30 fish per replicate) of European sea bass (14.4 ± 2.4 g) were fed the experimental diets for 71 days. The results showed that the incorporation of SCI at all levels of inclusion significantly enhanced nutrient digestibility. Additionally, growth performance parameters were not affected by SCI inclusion, exhibiting similar or improved values. Moreover, a tendency for improved anterior and posterior gut structure was observed and a significant increase of lysozyme activity at the two highest inclusion levels of SCI was determined. Overall, the results showed that the inclusion of SCI at 15% (bacterial: yeast: algae-9.4: 4.7: 1) is possible without compromising any of the parameters evaluated. According to these findings, a higher substitution of fishmeal trimmings, plant protein sources, and fish oil from trimmings with SCI in organic diets for European sea bass (D. labrax) can be further evaluated in future studies.

Abstract:It is well known that the gut microbiome and its interaction with the host influence several important factors for fish health such as nutrition and metabolism. Diet is one of the main factors influencing the composition of the gut microbiome in reared fish. Microalgae, due to their high fatty acid content, appear to be a promising alternative for replacing fish oil in aquafeed. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of dietary microalgae blends as fish oil replacers οn the midgut bacterial microbiota of the gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). The control diet (FO) contained only fish oil as source of lipids, EPA and DHA fatty acids, while three experimental diets were used where fish oil was replaced at 67% by one of the following microalgae biomass blends: Microchloropsis gaditana and Isochrysis sp. (Tisochrysis lutea) (MI), Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Isochrysis sp. (PI) and Schizochytrium sp. and P. tricornutum (SP). The midgut bacterial community composition of the experimental diets was altered compared to the control diet. There were 11 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) which were highly abundant in FO compared to the three experimental diets (FO,MI,SP) and two OTUs that were found in high abundance in both FO and the experimental diets in all comparisons (FO-MI, FO-PI, FO-SP). Most of the highly abundant OTUs in the experimental diets were unique to each experimental diet, with two OTUs being found in common between FO-MI and FO-PI. Additional evidence from the presumptive bacterial functional metabolic pathways suggested that the microalgae-based diets resulted in one over-expressed and one under-expressed pathway. The overexpressed pathway was related to the metabolism of fucose, a major cell wall exopolysaccharide of several microalgal species. Peptidoglycan biosynthesis was the under-expressed metabolic pathway. This suggests that a new gut microbiota profile was selected due to the microalgae inclusion in the provided diet. This study showed that, with the absence of mortality in fish, the gilthead sea bream gut microbiome can smoothly adapt its function according to the metabolic capacity of the dietary microalgae combinations that were used. The MI feed seems to promote several beneficial bacteria with potential probiotic abilities in the fish gut, belonging to the Pseudoalteromonas, Pseudomonas, Bacillus and Rhodopseudomonas genera.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate appropriate water sources to improve Solea aegyptiaca aquaculture from larval to the juvenile stage using two water sources (Eastern Harbour (EH) and MaxWell (MW)). Firstly, four microalgae's nutritional value (Nannochloropsis salina, N. oculata, Chlorella salina and Tetraselmis chuii) was assessed in both water sources. MW of high nitrate content enhanced the algal biomass and biochemical composition of all species compared to EH. MW-N. salina showed the highest growth and biochemical contents among the investigated species and yielded Artemia franciscana with a considerable amount of arachidonic acid (ARA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) compared to EH. Secondly, Artemia enriched MW-N salina was used to improve S. aegyptiaca quality in both water sources from 10-48 days posthatch at a density of 15 larvae L-1. The MW-S. aegyptiaca exhibited a significant increase in morphometric parameters, albino percentages and recorded the highest ARA, EPA and DHA content (35.9, 6.1 and 15.9 mu g g(-1), respectively) compared to that reared on EH. The study reports evidence of albinism of MW-S. aegyptiaca due to high dietary and ARA content. Overall, the seawater source has a significant impact on the whole food chain quality from microalgae to S. aegyptiaca.

Abstract:Replacing dietary fish oil with DHA-rich microalgae Schizochytrium sp. and EPA-rich microalgae Nannochloropsis sp. for olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) was examined. Three experimental isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets with lipid source provided by 50% fish oil (F50S50), 50% (M50F25S25) and 100% microalgae raw material (M100) respectively were compared with a soybean oil (S100) diet as control. Triplicate groups of olive flounder juveniles (16.5 +/- 0.91 g) were fed the experimental diets, and a group was fed the control diets for 8 weeks in a recirculation system. Results showed feed efficiency and growth performance were not significantly changed when fish oil (FO) was totally substituted by soybean oil (SO) or microalgae raw material (MRM). The whole-body composition, lipid content of liver and muscle, and lipid composition of plasma were not significantly influenced by the total substitution of FO by MRM. The polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content of muscle and liver declined in fish fed S100 diet, whereas it was not significantly reduced in fish fed M50F25S25 and M100 diets. The total substitution of FO by MRM not only maintained the levels of arachidonic acid, EPA or DHA but also increased n-3/n-6 ratio. In conclusion, MRM as the sole lipid source is sufficient to obtain good feed efficiency, growth performance and human health value in olive flounder juveniles.

Abstract:Seaweed draws a lot of attention for its vital role in aquaculture as it contains beneficial biological compounds that undoubtedly might help in the development of this field. The current study sheds light on the potential efficiency of dietary supplements of Grateloupia acuminata and G. doryphore (Halymeniaceae) nanoparticles (GNS) at different levels with bionanocomposite cellulose acetate membranes (CA/bio-AgNps) on improved growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, immunity, antioxidative, resistance against infectious pathogens, and characterization of water quality treated with CA/bio-AgNps that is used in rearing Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ). Four concentrations (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 ml/L) of GNS extract were tested as potential anti-bacterial and for the efficacy of being parasitic. Fish with an average weight (24.46 ± 0. 50 g) were apportioned into six experimental groups (T0, T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5) represented as 0.0%, 0.0%, 0.1%, 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1.0% GNS in diets with CA/bio-AgNps, respectively. Injection of fish with Aeromonas hydrophila was performed at the end of the trial. Chemical and bacteriological water indices significantly showed improvement after being treated with CA/bio-AgNps than the control group. Growth, carcass composition, digestive enzyme, and hematological and biochemical indices were significantly noticed positive ( p< 0.05), especially T4 and T5, than the control group. In parallel, a significant improvement was noticed in serum lysozyme, total immunoglobulin, complement C3, antioxidative enzyme, and the relative expression of hepatic and inflammatory genes with an increased level of GNS ( p< 0.05) are upregulated than the control group. Remarkably, GNS-supplemented diets and extracts provided positive efficacy against A. hydrophila with a decreased percentage of fish mortality, besides efficacy on antibacterial strains and Cichlidogyrus tilapiae , respectively. To sum up, the seaweed extract with CA/bio-AgNps resulted in better growth performance of fish, antipathogenic effect, and health status. Furthermore, CA/bio-AgNps were vital in improving water characteristics. They should be studied and applied more in the future.

Abstract:Search for novel best-performing starter feed ingredients is one of the main challenges of modern aquaculture industry. The goal of this article is to evaluate the effect of microalgae supplementation enriched with omega-3 polyunsaturated eicosapentaenoic acid and the powerful antioxidant fucoxanthin on growth performance of Red tilapia fry ( Oreochromis mossambicus × Oreochromis niloticus ). We formulated three experimental diets, using two strains of microalgae from our culture collection – Vischeria magna SBV-108 (Eustigmatophyceae), rich in eicosapentaenoic acid and Mallomonas furtiva SBV-13 (Chrysophyceae), rich in fucoxanthin – and their combination. Vischeria magna SBV-108 is a new strain which biochemical properties and growth characteristics have not been previously studied. Coppens Supreme-15 was used as a control diet. The best growth performance was recorded in eicosapentainoic acid enriched Diet 1 (10% w/w V. magna ), that significantly (P<0.05) overperformed control feed on absolute growth, average growth, specific growth rate, feed conversion rate, protein efficiency ratio, protein productive value and energy productive value. Diet 3 (5% w/w V. magna and 5% w/w M. furtiva ) and Diet 2 (10% w/w M. furtiva ) were not significantly different from control at most parameters. Generally, supplementation of feed with microalgae rich in omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid significantly improved Red tilapia fry growth parameters and overall feed performance, while supplementation of feed with microalgae rich in antioxidant fucoxanthin was not beneficial compared to the control.

Abstract:The effect of different main dietary compositions on growth, anticipatory digestive enzyme activities, and oxidative status was studied in the proximal intestine of juvenile European sea bass. A control diet (C, 44% protein, 17.6% lipid, and 20% starch), three diets with increasing starch levels to test protein sparing (P36S36, P40S29, and P43S24), and two diets with high lipid content (L20S13 and L22S7) were tested. After 20 weeks, growth, digestive enzyme activities, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activities, and G6PDH activity were measured after a 24-h fast. Sea bass fed P43S24 and L20S13 maintained an oxidative status like C fish, up-regulated CAT activity, and adjusted anticipatory protease activity. Instead, the lipid peroxidation increased in the L22S7 group, although CAT activity increased, whereas anticipatory total protease activity was downregulated. P40S29 also triggered LPO and CAT activity, but G6PDH levels diminished significantly. Moreover, an up-regulation in digestive enzyme activities was found. Finally, P36S36 fish showed less antioxidant enzyme activity and G6PDH, although their LPO tended to increase and their lipase and α-amylase activities were upregulated. In conclusion, the inclusion of carbohydrates up to 24% or lipids up to 20% is possible for this species if protein requirements are met without negative effects on growth.

Abstract:The use of natural immunostimulants in aquaculture is intended to foster overall health and bolster resilience against diseases in farmed fish populations. It constitutes a crucial strategy that can contribute to securing the sustainability of the aquaculture industry, and it is an area that warrants ongoing exploration and development. Therefore, the aim of the present work was to evaluate the effect of dietary administration of olive pulp on growth rate, metabolic profile, serum antioxidant potential, and humoral and cellular innate immune parameters of gilthead seabream ( Sparus aurata L.). For this, fish were fed control diet or olive pulp enriched diets (50, 100, and 200 mg kg feed −1 ) for 4 weeks. Our results demonstrated that the highest inclusion level improved the growth rates and the biological antioxidant potential in the serum of fish. However, after 4 weeks of feeding, most of the assayed metabolic parameters (Ca 2+ , TP, ALB, K + , and Na + ) were increased in the serum of fish fed with a diet containing the lowest level of olive pulp (50 mg kg feed −1 ). Regarding the innate immune parameters, the IgM levels decreased in the serum of fish fed 50′s diet after 2 and 4 weeks of trial. However, the serum of fish fed with diets containing 100 and 200 showed an increase in hemolytic complement activity after 2 weeks whilst this increase was only sustained in the 200′s group after 4 weeks. After 2 weeks of feeding, the serum of the fish showed an increase in peroxidase activity due to the highest olive inclusion. Concerning cellular innate parameters, peroxidase activity, respiratory burst, and phagocytic ability were increased in head-kidney leucocytes of fish fed 100′s diet at 2 weeks compared to values from control fish. These results suggest that the administration of olive pulp-enriched diets can benefit fish growth, antioxidant, and immune status of gilthead seabream.

Abstract:Protein kinase CK2, a protein serine/threonine kinase, plays a global role in activities related to cell growth, cell death, and cell survival. CK2 has a large number of potential substrates localized in diverse locations in the cell including, for example, NF‐κB as an important downstream target of the kinase. In addition to its involvement in cell growth and proliferation it is also a potent suppressor of apoptosis, raising its key importance in cancer cell phenotype. CK2 interacts with diverse pathways which illustrates the breadth of its impact on the cellular machinery of both cell growth and cell death giving it the status of a “master regulator” in the cell. With respect to cancer, CK2 has been found to be dysregulated in all cancers examined demonstrating increased protein expression levels and nuclear localization in cancer cells compared with their normal counterparts. We originally proposed CK2 as a potentially important target for cancer therapy. Given the ubiquitous and essential for cell survival nature of the kinase, an important consideration would be to target it specifically in cancer cells while sparing normal cells. Towards that end, our design of a tenascin based sub‐50 nm (i.e., less than 50 nm size) nanocapsule in which an anti‐CK2 therapeutic agent can be packaged is highly promising because this formulation can specifically deliver the cargo intracellularly to the cancer cells in vivo. Thus, appropriate strategies to target CK2 especially by molecular approaches may lead to a highly feasible and effective approach to eradication of a given cancer.
