Abstract:Objective Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are an efficacious support for some but not all people wishing to stop using tobacco. While advice and practical support have been identified as increasing quit success, little research has explored the role of changes in smoking and EC‐related social identities. Methods A prospective study following 573 people attempting to quit smoking with EC support. Self‐report measures of identification with being a smoker, non‐smoker, vaper and dual user (people using ECs and tobacco products) were taken prior to the quit attempt and at a 12‐week follow‐up. Results Baseline identifications with being a smoker, non‐smoker or dual user were not associated with smoking outcomes. Baseline vaper identity baseline was linked to more frequent tobacco abstinence at follow‐up and lower levels of cigarette smoking. Levels of social identification at follow‐up were consistently linked with outcomes, with vaper identity and non‐smoking identities being protective and dual user identity being related to lower abstinence rates but decreased tobacco usage. Changes in identity over time were the most consistent predictor of outcomes. Conclusions Findings have implications for smoking cessation practice, informing how and when identity‐based interventions may be effective and our understanding of how identity transitions occur.

Correlates of stages of change of smoking among inhabitants of deprived neighbourhoods

Abstract:Background: This study examines the prevalence and correlates of stages of change of smoking, in terms of psychosocial, structural and sociodemographic factors, among inhabitants of deprived neighbourhoods. Methods: Cross-sectional data were obtained from a survey on health related behaviour. Subjects were 2009 current and former smokers, aged 20-46, living in deprived neighbourhoods in Rotterdam, the second largest city in the Netherlands. Three groups of smokers were formed according to the stages of change-definitions of the Transtheoretical Model: smokers not planning to quit (precontemplators), smokers planning to quit (contemplators/preparators) and former smokers (actors/maintainers). Smokers planning to quit and smokers not planning to quit were compared regarding psychosocial factors (attitude, social norm, self-efficacy), structural factors (neighbourhood problems, material deprivation, financial problems, employment status) and sociodemographic factors (age, gender, marital status, cultural background, educational level). Former smokers were compared with smokers planning to quit regarding structural and sociodemographic factors. Logistic regression was used to assess correlates of stages of change. Results: Smokers planning to quit (prevalence = 19%) reported a more positive attitude, stronger social norms and higher self-efficacy expectations in quitting smoking than smokers not planning to quit (prevalence = 57%). Smokers planning to quit less often were Dutch-born, more often had attended higher vocational schooling or university and more often reported experiencing two or more neighbourhood problems compared to smokers not planning to quit. Former smokers (prevalence = 24%) were older, more often Dutch-born, married, employed and higher educated, compared to smokers planning to quit. Furthermore, former smokers less often reported material deprivation and financial problems than smokers planning to quit. Conclusion: Among people living in deprived neighbourhoods, different factors correlate with different stages of change of smoking. Implications for health promotion are discussed.
Effects of smoking and smoking cessation on human serum metabolite profile: results from the KORA cohort study

Abstract:Background Metabolomics helps to identify links between environmental exposures and intermediate biomarkers of disturbed pathways. We previously reported variations in phosphatidylcholines in male smokers compared with non-smokers in a cross-sectional pilot study with a small sample size, but knowledge of the reversibility of smoking effects on metabolite profiles is limited. Here, we extend our metabolomics study with a large prospective study including female smokers and quitters. Methods Using targeted metabolomics approach, we quantified 140 metabolite concentrations for 1,241 fasting serum samples in the population-based Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg (KORA) human cohort at two time points: baseline survey conducted between 1999 and 2001 and follow-up after seven years. Metabolite profiles were compared among groups of current smokers, former smokers and never smokers, and were further assessed for their reversibility after smoking cessation. Changes in metabolite concentrations from baseline to the follow-up were investigated in a longitudinal analysis comparing current smokers, never smokers and smoking quitters, who were current smokers at baseline but former smokers by the time of follow-up. In addition, we constructed protein-metabolite networks with smoking-related genes and metabolites. Results We identified 21 smoking-related metabolites in the baseline investigation (18 in men and six in women, with three overlaps) enriched in amino acid and lipid pathways, which were significantly different between current smokers and never smokers. Moreover, 19 out of the 21 metabolites were found to be reversible in former smokers. In the follow-up study, 13 reversible metabolites in men were measured, of which 10 were confirmed to be reversible in male quitters. Protein-metabolite networks are proposed to explain the consistent reversibility of smoking effects on metabolites. Conclusions We showed that smoking-related changes in human serum metabolites are reversible after smoking cessation, consistent with the known cardiovascular risk reduction. The metabolites identified may serve as potential biomarkers to evaluate the status of smoking cessation and characterize smoking-related diseases.

Abstract:Abstract Groups of 50 female Swiss mice were fed for 18 months on a standard diet containing sucrose (10%), sodium cyclamate (5%) or saccharin (5%), while 100 control mice were fed on the standard diet alone. The survival times were comparable in all groups and no acute toxic effects were encountered. No local tumours in the gastro-intestinal tract, nor excess incidence of distant tumours, were found in animals fed on the various sweeteners. The mice fed on the diet containing 10% sucrose gained more weight than animals in the other groups, but did not show an increased incidence of neoplasms. Comparable groups of mice were given a single intragastric instillation of 50 μ g benzo[ a ]pyrene in 0·2 ml polyethylene glycol 400, 7 days before the start of feeding of the different test diets. Some mice in all these groups developed, as expected, benign and malignant neoplasms of the forestomach epithelium, but treatment with the sweetening agents had no obvious effect on the incidence, number or histological type of these or of any other type of neoplasm. No neoplasms of the urinary bladder were seen on careful macroscopic examination of mice at necropsy; the bladders were not examined microscopically. It is concluded that, under the experimental conditions described, the three sweeteners examined showed no carcinogenic or tumour-promoting activity.
The effects of σ(C-Se)-π hyperconjugation in 1-methoxy- and 1-nitro-4-[(phenylselanyl)methyl]benzene.

Abstract:The structures of 1-methoxy-4-[(phenylselanyl)methyl]benzene, C14H14OSe, (1), and 1-nitro-4-[(phenylselanyl)methyl]benzene, C13H11NO2Se, (2), were determined at 130 K. The two structures, which differ in that (1) contains an electron-rich aromatic ring and (2) contains an electron-deficient aromatic ring, both adopt conformations which allow for σ(C-Se)-π hyperconjugation. However, although there are significant differences in the (77)Se chemical shifts for these two compounds, they do not display significantly different H2C-Se or H2C-C(ar) bond lengths, suggesting that the effects of σ(C-Se)-π hyperconjugation in (1) and (2) are not strong enough to be manifested in measurable differences in the structural parameters.

Abstract:The decision to initiate, maintain, or quit cigarette smoking is structured by both social networks and health beliefs. Self-exempting beliefs affect people's decisions in favor of a behavior even when they recognize the harm associated with it. This study incorporated the literatures on social networks and self-exempting beliefs to study the problem of daily smoking by exploring their mediatory relationships and the mechanisms of how smoking behavior is developed and maintained. Specifically, this article hypothesizes that social networks affect daily smoking directly as well as indirectly by facilitating the formation of self-exempting beliefs. The sample comes from urban male residents in Hangzhou, China randomly selected and interviewed through multistage sampling in 2011. Using binary mediation analysis with logistic regression to test the hypotheses, the authors found that (a) daily smoking is associated with having smokers in several social network arenas and (b) self-exempting beliefs about smoking mediate the association between coworker network and daily smoking, but not for family network and friend network. The role of social network at work place in the creation and maintenance of self-exempting beliefs should be considered by policymakers, prevention experts, and interventionists.
“Boy, what are we all doing? We are crazy, really crazy”: a qualitative study of psychosocial processes around an atypical one-time smoking cessation course

Abstract:Abstract Background Smoking prevalence is still high, which requires effective interventions that help many people who smoke at once in addition to time-consuming individual interventions. ‘I Quit’ is a large-scale smoking cessation course in The Netherlands. This qualitative study explored I Quit participants’ experiences during and after the course, and perceptions of whether and how the course may have altered their smoking behavior. Methods We performed individual semi-structured interviews with course participants ( N = 21) who had either quit successfully, attempted to quit but relapsed, or had continued to smoke after ‘I Quit’. Shortly after qualitative data collection was completed, Foundation I Quit was accused in the media of a number of misbehaviors. Although unplanned, this provided a unique opportunity to explore participants’ views on alleged fraud in a second round of interviews ( N = 16). Data were collected from 2016 to 2018. Results Qualitative findings showed two psychosocial processes that may explain smoking cessation after course attendance. First, the confrontation with a large group of people who smoke, of whom some had already developed smoking-related complaints, triggered identity processes both towards and away from quitting smoking. Unorthodox methods used in the course appeared to trigger identity processes. Second, social support after the course from participants’ own social network facilitated maintenance of successful quitting. The study also found that interview participants’ opinions on I Quit did not change much after allegations of fraud in the media. Conclusions Findings suggest that a one-time course might initiate psychosocial processes that could help certain smokers to gain motivation to quit, requiring a minimum of resources. Identity processes triggered by the course seem tricky as people have different ways of dealing with identity threat, some of which can be counterproductive and even result in more difficulty quitting. More research is needed to examine who can benefit from a one-time course, and who needs more support in order to quit successfully.
Longitudinal patterns of smoking behaviours in adolescence and early adulthood and their association with modifiable and sociodemographic risk factors

Abstract:Introduction Smoking contributes a huge burden on public health; thus, identifying risk factors for smoking remains an important area of research. This study adds to the wealth of existing literature by utilising repeated smoking measures collected in a UK sample of young adults to (a) examine differences between longitudinal smoking behaviours, (b) investigate their association with many risk factors, and c) consider how these associations may change over time. Methods This study uses longitudinal latent class analysis and 12 repeated measures to derive patterns of smoking in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. The association of these patterns with 402 risk factor measures collected from 0-28 years is then investigated. The selected risk factors include familial and peer factors, lifestyle and sociodemographic factors, mental health, parenthood, adverse childhood experiences and trauma. Results Five different latent classes of smoking were derived and referred to as non-smoking, short-term smoking, occasional smoking, early-onset smoking, and late-onset smoking. These showed differences in age of onset, frequency, and cessation. Other substance use, and parental and peer substance use, showed the strongest association with smoking patterns. More risk factors were associated with early-onset than late-onset smoking. Many risk factors of regular smoking did not show the same associations with occasional smoking. Fewer measures differentiated late-onset from short-term smoking. Some associations varied depending on the time of measurement or smoking pattern in question. Conclusions Findings from this study may be used to identify groups of people most vulnerable to more harmful smoking patterns despite being exposed to strong tobacco prevention efforts. This could also help better tailor smoking interventions and improve tobacco control policies.
Examining the impact of perceived psychological distances of quitting and continuing tobacco smoking on antismoking intention: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:To date, little research has been conducted to understand the role of psychological distances on smoking behaviour. Construal Level Theory posits that individuals mentally construe events, objects, or ideas based on their perceived distance in terms of spatial, temporal, social, and hypothetical dimensions, influencing their judgments and decision-making processes. The aim of the current study was (1) to provide a comprehensive exploration of psychological distances of costs and benefits of tobacco smoking and antismoking intention and (2) to examine whether smoking can be attributed to rational behaviour based on the psychological distance weighted balance of perceived costs and benefits of quitting and continuing smoking. Mediation models delineating the relationships among temporal and hypothetical psychological distances, personal relevance and antismoking intention were tested on cross-sectional survey data of 1486 smokers (880 men, Mage = 39.9 years, SD = 13.36). Psychological distances were shown to be important factors in the cognitive evaluation process of smoking behaviour. Perceived temporal distance to smoking continuation/cessation was related to personal importance and hypothetical psychological distances, which were associated with anti-smoking intention. Furthermore, antismoking intention was related to the psychological distance-weighted gain-cost balance of quitting and continuing smoking. The current findings enhance our knowledge of the cognitive evaluation of the outcomes of smoking, indicating that the choice of not quitting smoking may be partially based on a biased rational decision-making process.
Social network tie functions of social support and social influence and adult smoking abstinence

Abstract:Adults’ social network ties serve multiple functions and play prominently in quitting smoking. We examined three types of adults’ egocentric social networks, including family, friends, and friends online to investigate how two network characteristics with major relevance to health behavior, network size and tie closeness, related to the emotional and confidant support and to pro- and anti-smoking social influence these ties may transmit. We also examine whether the social support and social influence constructs related to smoking abstinence. We utilized baseline and 7-day abstinence survey data from 123 adult current smokers attempting to quit prior to the start of a randomized controlled quit-smoking trial of a social support intervention for quitting smoking on Twitter. To examine study relationships, we estimated Negative Binomial Regression models and Logistic Regression models. For all networks, network size and tie closeness related positively to most of the social support and social influence constructs, with tie closeness related most strongly, especially for online friends. Family pro-smoking social influence related negatively to smoking abstinence, and there were marginally negative relationships for family emotional support and family confidant support. Online friend emotional support had a marginally positive relationship with smoking abstinence. Overall, our findings indicated the importance of the social support and social influence functions of each type of network tie, with larger networks and closer ties related to higher levels of social support and social influence. Moreover, family network pro-smoking social influence may compromise abstinence while emotional support from online friend network ties may reinforce it.

Changing Behaviour: Blindness to Risk and a Critique of Tobacco Control Policy in China-A Qualitative Study

Abstract:(1) Background: It is well recognised that a focus on changing behaviour remains a dominant and often appealing approach to develop health policies. This study provides a sociological insight into young adults' knowledge of the health effects of smoking cigarettes. We also examine the challenges in tobacco control and criticize the implementation policies in Chinese context. (2) Methods: The study applies both a micro-sociological and a macro-sociological approach using semi-structured interviews and documents as the primary research methodology. Fieldwork was conducted from July to September 2016 and December 2016 to March 2017. The qualitative study involved 45 semi-structured interviews with young adults aged 16-24 years (15 females and 30 males) in Tianjin, China. A grounded theory approach was used for a thematic analysis. (3) Results: The participants knew cigarettes are harmful, although they lacked a comprehensive understanding of the health risks of smoking. Because the health consequences usually emerge after a long period of smoking, young smokers decide to take the health risk. All participants have a general understanding of China's tobacco control policies and think that the implementation is ineffective. (4) Conclusions: Changing in smoking is a process embedded in complex social environments and cultures. Smoking behaviour is not only a personal choice, but also related to personal connections with peers and identity in Chinese society. The Chinese government has made significant achievements in tobacco control since joining the WHO framework convention on tobacco control in 2005. However, implementation needs to be stricter in order to achieve international levels of control, especially in taxes on tobacco product and the price of cigarettes. There is an urgent need for the regulation of e-cigarettes in China.
Study on Situations of Leading to Smoking Quitting Relapse

Abstract:Objective: To explore situations inducing smoking qnitting relapse.Methods:Married male smokers in Hangzhou were surveyed about their smoking cessation behaviors using a house hold interviewing. Families inculding were selected using multiple-stratified randomized sampling. Within each selected family, one member was randomly chosen to be interviewed. The survey content included current smoking status,demographic characteristics of the smoker, age starting smoking, and situations related to relapse. The situations inducing relapse were ranked according to frequency of the responses.Results:1922 eligible questionnaires were obtained from 1976 family members. We identified 904 smokers among them, the smoking prevalence was 47.03%. Of this group, 201(22.23%) had previously quit smoking at least once. The situations related to relapse, in order of frequency, included social contact(34.33%), positive emotion(13.43%),negative emotion(13.43%), loneliness(8.46%)and after a meal(7.46%).Conclusion:Smoking is a serious problem in Chinese male, the results of this study may serve as a basis for development of future smoking cessation programs in China.

Abstract:The effectiveness of mutual help groups (MHGs) in promoting addiction recovery has been widely acknowledged. However, the psychological mechanisms underlying the impact of MHGs remain somewhat uncertain. Drawing on a social identity perspective, this study investigated a sequential mediation model in which social support is posited as a driving factor that enhances abstinence maintenance through group identification, recovery identity, and self‐efficacy. A sample of 820 smokers, participating in a 6‐month collective smoking cessation programme which included access to an online help group, completed measures of social support, group identification, smoker/ex‐smoker identity, and self‐efficacy at the programme's outset. Smoking abstinence was assessed 6 and 9 months later. The findings supported the proposed model, indicating that social support was positively associated with MHG identification, which, in turn, was related to a stronger recovery identity. Subsequently, recovery identity was associated with increased self‐efficacy, and indirectly, with smoking abstinence at both measurement times. Additional analyses testing alternative mediation models further supported the validity of the proposed model. These findings suggest that social identity factors play significant roles in accounting for the effectiveness of MHGs for addiction recovery.

Translating the Link Between Social Identity and Health Behavior Into Effective Health Communication Strategies: An Experimental Application Using Antismoking Advertisements

Abstract:Social identity is a construct that has been linked to health behavior. Yet, limited research has attempted to translate this relationship into health communication strategies. The current study addresses this gap by examining the efficacy of social identity targeting (constructing ads so that they target a specific group with which an individual identifies) to increase anti-cigarette smoking beliefs among adolescents. Two hundred and fifty one adolescents aged 12-15, randomly selected from a nationally representative sample, completed an online survey. Participants indicated which of 11 peer groups (determined in pre-testing) they most identified with. Each participant was then randomly assigned to view an ad that either did or did not target that group. One week later participants reported level of agreement with two key antismoking beliefs presented in the ad. Multiple regression analyses indicated that if an individual identified with the group targeted by the ad, antismoking beliefs were more strongly endorsed. Based on these findings, we conclude that social identity targeting has the potential to increase the effectiveness of antismoking messages and should be considered when designing antismoking campaigns.

Abstract:This study uses protection motivation theory (PMT) to examine the quitting intentions and behaviours of smokers who have varying levels of nicotine dependence. Our goals are to identify the psychological factors that influence smoking cessation and to provide valuable evidence to promote theory-guided interventions. This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted from July to August 2020. Participants were randomly selected on the streets of 26 provinces on mainland China. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews. Our analysis was conducted in three steps. First, we employed descriptive statistics to present the overall characteristics of our sample. Second, we analysed the association between PMT constructs and quitting intentions stratified by nicotine dependence. Third, we tested how quitting intentions were associated with quitting behaviours in each subgroup using logistic regression models. For intention, almost all the PMT constructs were significantly associated with quitting intention in the low-dependence group. For the moderate- and high-dependence groups, only perceived vulnerability (coefficient = 0.35, P = 0.04) was positively associated with quitting intention. For behaviour, we found a stronger association between quitting intention and behaviour in the low-dependence group (Coef. = 1.67, P = 0.00) than for the other groups. We found a significant association between e-cigarette use and quitting behaviour only in the low-dependence group (Coef. = 1.34, P = 0.00). Coefficients for the moderate- and high-dependence groups were not statistically significant. Smokers at various levels of nicotine dependence have different psychological factors that influence their intentions to stop smoking. Quitting intention was more significantly associated with quitting behaviour for the low nicotine-dependence group than for the other groups. More convincing research is necessary to determine how e-cigarette use affects quitting behaviour in the long term.
Inhibition of bacterial transport by uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation. Effects of pentachlorophenol and analogues in Bacillus subtilis.

Abstract:Analogues of the potent uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation pentachlorophenol were tested as inhibitors of proline and glycine transport by Bacillus subtilis. These analogues included less highly substituted chlorophenols and pentachlorothiophenol. Like pentachlorophenol, they are non-competitive inhibitors of proline transport and uncompetitive inhibitors of glycine transport. However, the less highly substituted chlorophenols are weaker acids than pentachlorophenol and also weaker inhibitors. Analysis indicated that the anionic form of the uncouplers is the inhibiting species. Pentachlorothiophenol, a water-insoluble anion, is also a potent inhibitor. These results support previous studies that concluded that uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation inhibit amino acid transport by binding at specific sites on proteins, the free energy of interaction stabilizing 'unproductive' conformations. Such specific interactions of uncoupler with protein are probably commonplace.
Trajectories of motivation and self-efficacy during a smoking quit attempt: An ecological momentary assessment study.

Abstract:Objective: Conceptual models of addiction highlight self-efficacy and motivation as key variables important during a smoking quit attempt; however, recent research has primarily focused on self-efficacy. Given the importance of motivation in these models, a clearer understanding of the effects of motivation during a smoking quit attempt is needed. Method: This study utilized ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to investigate the dynamic effects of motivation and self-efficacy early in a quit attempt. Participants were 356 smokers (45% male; 34% African American, 33% non-Hispanic White, 33% Latino). Participants completed EMAs of motivation, self-efficacy, and smoking for 4 days prequit through 1 week postquit, and returned for a follow-up assessment at 4 weeks postquit. Trajectory parameters of motivation and self-efficacy (mean, slope, and volatility) were analyzed in separate and combined regression models to predict smoking outcomes. Results: Prequit results showed that parameters of motivation and self-efficacy were not associated with smoking on quit day. Postquit analyses revealed that participants with lower mean levels of motivation and self-efficacy were more likely to smoke at the end of Week 1. Moreover, individuals with decreasing levels of motivation over the first week of their quit attempt were more likely to be smoking at the end of Week 4. Conclusions: These findings highlight the need to incorporate dynamic measures of motivation in smoking research. Furthermore, the results underscore the value of utilizing EMA methods and trajectory parameters to gain a more nuanced understanding of the dynamic effects that key mechanisms have on smoking during a quit attempt. Abstract:Nanoparticles of high refractive index materials can possess strong magnetic polarizabilities and give rise to artificial magnetism in the optical spectral range. While the response of individual dielectric or metal spherical particles can be described analytically via multipole decomposition in the Mie series, the influence of substrates, in many cases present in experimental observations, requires different approaches. Here, the comprehensive numerical studies of the influence of a substrate on the spectral response of high-index dielectric nanoparticles were performed. In particular, glass, perfect electric conductor, gold, and hyperbolic metamaterial substrates were investigated. Optical properties of nanoparticles were characterized via scattering cross-section spectra, electric field profiles, and induced electric and magnetic moments. The presence of substrates was shown to have significant impact on particle's magnetic resonances and resonant scattering cross-sections. Variation of substrate material provides an additional degree of freedom in tailoring optical properties of magnetic multipoles, important in many applications.
Self-efficacy, decisional balance and the stages of change for smoking cessation in a German sample

Abstract:The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) has been shown to be a powerful basis for describing and explaining behavior change and designing effective interventions. Previous research has documented its usefulness in the context of smoking cessation as well as other areas but predominantly in US samples. The goal of this study was to provide further data on the applicability of the TTM and the relationship of some of its core constructs (stage of change, self-efficacy, decisional balance) in a German sample of smokers and ex-smokers. Participants (N = 401) were ever-smokers (age M = 47 years, range 35-65, 62% male) who participated in a health check-up for cardiovascular risk factors at their general practitioner's office. For current smokers, significant differences in the number of quit attempts across the stages of change supported the criterion validity of the staging algorithm; differences in number of cigarettes per day were non-significant. Self-efficacy for non-smoking behavior showed an almost linear increase across the stages of change, with significant differences between pre-action and action stages. The pros for smoking cessation also increased significantly across the stages, mainly due to a significantly lower perception of pros by participants in the Precontemplation stage. As expected, the cons for smoking cessation decreased significantly, being lower in Action and Maintenance than in earlier stages. Although the generalizability of the results for the stage distribution is limited by the selectivity of the sample, the results underline the applicability and replicability of these TTM core constructs for smoking cessation with newly developed instruments in a German sample.
