Abstract:In 2009, a low-volume gravel road in Sweden was stabilised using fly ash from a local paper mill. The objective was to examine whether fly ash could be used to enhance the stability of the road and how the nearby environment would be affected. The technical and environmental properties of the road have been monitored for two, six, and eleven years. Because the construction costs are higher for ash upgrading than for conventional upgrading, knowing for how long the improved properties will remain is relevant. Strength development was studied using a falling weight deflectometer and compressive strength tests. Environmental properties were studied by chemical analysis of road samples, soil, soil pore water, and vegetation. The results showed that the ash sections had higher stiffness than the reference sections. Leaching tests of road samples showed that the mobility of potassium, sodium, chloride, and sulfate decreased with time. Trace element concentrations in soil samples, except barium, were below the Swedish guideline values for sensitive land use. Chromium, lead, and copper were as high or even higher along the reference section than along the ash section. After 11 years, the pH closest to the ash section was slightly enhanced. Concentrations of zinc and cadmium in the soil pore water were the lowest closest to the ash road, although the total concentrations in the soil were at their highest at the same distance. No toxic levels of trace elements were found in the vegetation close to the road, although a clear difference was observed between plants from the ash section and the reference section, using multivariate data analysis. The positive effects on the geotechnical road properties from ash stabilisation remained after 11 years. The environmental impacts on nearby soil and vegetation can be considered low and acceptable. This study demonstrates that the use of biofuel fly ash in infrastructure projects can contribute to the circular economy and effective use of resources because the demand for pristine materials will be reduced.

Abstract:Achieving sustainable zero-waste and carbon neutral solutions that contribute to a circular economy is critically important for the long-term prosperity and continuity of traditional carbon-based energy industries. The Estonian oil shale (OS) sector is an example where such solutions are more than welcome. The combustion of OS generates a continuous flow of ashes destined to landfills. In this study, the technical feasibility of producing monolith building materials incorporating different OS ashes from Estonia was evaluated. Three binder systems were studied: self-cementation of the ashes, ceramic sintering in clay brick production and accelerated carbonation of OS ash (OSA) compacts. Results showed that most of the OSAs studied have low self-cementitious properties and these properties were affected by ash fineness and mineralogical composition. In case of clay bricks, OSA addition resulted in a higher porosity and improved insulation properties. The carbonated OSA compacts showed promising compressive strength. Accelerated carbonation of compacted samples was found to be the most promising way for the future utilization of OSAs as sustainable zero-waste and carbon neutral solution.

Abstract:Seepage from oil sands tailings ponds (OSTP), which contain toxic naphthenic acids (NAs), can infiltrate into groundwater. Clay sediment layer beneath is a critical barrier for reducing the infiltration of NAs into the sand sediment layer, where groundwater channels reside. Biodegradation has great potential as a strategy for NAs removal, but little is known about NAs biodegradability and potential functional microbes in these pristine sediments. This study investigated the potential for anaerobic biodegradation of NAs by microbial consortia enriched from clay and sand sediments underlying OSTP, amended with either acid extracted organics or Merichem NAs, under nitrate- and sulfate-reducing conditions. Degradation of NAs only be detected after DOC concentration reached to steady state after 163 days. Microbial community analysis shows that different electron acceptors, sediment types, and NAs sources associated with specific microbial taxa and can explain 14.8, 13.9 % and 5% of variation of microbial community structures, respectively. The DOC and methane were the most important geochemical properties for microbial community variations. This study approved the potential capability of indigenous microbial communities from the pristine sediments in NA degradation, demonstrating the barrier function of pristine clay sediments underlying OSTP in prohibiting organic contaminants from entering into groundwater.

Abstract:Oil shale ash (OSA) is proven as a self-cementitious material that consists of two parts; a cementitious part represented by its high content of CaO, and a Pozzolanic part represented by its content of Al2O3, SiO2, and Fe2O3. OSA can be used in the various applications of the construction industry and building technology to minimize environmental risks and promote sustainability. This review aims to survey the research efforts on using OSA for construction applications and map the research views from the literature through a coherent and systematic mixed reviewing methodology (bibliometric analysis and systematic review). Overall, 528 publications were collected and then screened to 38 studies. The bibliometric mapping was implemented for the keyword's occurrence and the tested properties of construction materials containing OSA. This review concluded that the utilization of OSA in construction materials has considerably interesting pathways and presents a basis for future optimization in concrete, mortar, geopolymer, building blocks, glass–ceramic, aggregate, asphalt binder, and soil stabilization agent. However, this utilization negatively affects several aspects of each type of the reviewed material. More investigations are required to provide a better understanding of the mechanical properties and durability of OSA-based concrete for its mass usage in broad applications and widespread in the construction industry. This systematic review provides a thorough understanding of gaps and existing opportunities for research and is expected to motivate researchers to be involved in this range of studies.

Abstract:With the development of the road pavement industry and increasing traffic on streets, construction materials have likewise been developed and progressively non-conventional materials have been incorporated. The main idea behind the utilization of those non-conventional materials was the shortage of natural materials and their expensive cost which have supported the inclination towards the inclusion of waste and marginal materials that has also assisted in achieving environmental sustainability in asphalt pavement design and construction. Researches have shown that there is a variety of waste materials that can be used effectively in different layers of pavement system such as oil shale ash (OSA). OSA is considered undesirable and environmentally dangerous as a byproduct of direct combustion or retorting of oil shale. However, research has recently shown that this ash has many benefits that improve the asphalt mixture. Accordingly, this paper presents a systematic review of the performance evaluation of different types of OSA modified asphalt cement and asphaltic concrete mixes, in terms of the most successful ratio to be added and the extent to which the properties of asphalt mixtures were affected by this addition. It was concluded that there is a consensus among the researchers that adding OSA to concrete mixture improved its conventional and rheological properties and reduced its potential for stripping and creep damaging, where the optimum ratio of OSA to be added was recommended to be in the range of 5–15% by the volume of binder.

Abstract:In line with sustainable development, the road sector has initiated the use of agro-wastes in road construction to preserve natural resources, which have been commonly used in conventional construction. In that sense, this study investigates the merits and demerits of incorporating eggshell ash (ESA) and rice husk ash (RHA) into geopolymer based lateritic soil stabilization for roadbase construction. Atterberg limits, modified Proctor compaction, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests were conducted on lateritic soil samples stabilized with cement or geopolymer that comprises of the combination of ESA, RHA and sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH). Results from the experimental study revealed that an increase in ESA substitution level reduced the plasticity index of lateritic soil. Maximum dry density was slightly reduced in all soil mixes stabilized with ESA, RHA and NaOH. With reference to cement stabilization, UCS showed a marginal reduction of 8.2 and 13.2% in geopolymer combinations of 3E1R1N (3% ESA + 1% RHA + 1% NaOH) and 2E2R1N (2% ESA + 2% RHA + 1% NaOH), respectively. Notably, out of all mixes, the mix combination of 3E1R1N and 2E2R1N produced the lowest cost to strength and embodied energy to strength ratio, and relatively lower CO 2 emission to strength ratio. The authors believe that the proposed geopolymer stabilization method would be a competitive alternative to cement based lateritic soil stabilization for roadbase construction.

Abstract:Air-cooled blast furnace slag (ACBFS) is often used as road construction aggregate. Several incidences of adverse environmental effects have been reported in Indiana where unbound slag has been used. The aggregates that caused issues in the field had been previously approved for use by passing State of Indiana standard slag leaching procedures. The study goal was to test several hypotheses posed to the Indiana Department of Transportation and authors by the industry about slag leaching, and to better understand water quality impacts. Ten slags from two suppliers underwent leaching procedures adopted by two U.S. states, but additional test procedures and material and leachate chemical characterization were also conducted to better interpret results. Aggregates varied in size and age (24 h to 2 years old). Like prior literature reports, the chemical composition among the slag samples was similar. However, water quality impacts observed at the bench-scale in this study differed substantially across the slags. Results were consistent with those previously reported at Indiana field sites, but not with literature reported results from standardized leaching tests (i.e., TCLP, percolation, etc.). In the present study, no relationship was found between slag age and leachate composition. Leachate pH, conductivity, and color levels exceeded thresholds of regulatory and aquatic toxicity significance. For one slag, leachate pH reached 12.9, but the effluent was colorless. During both stagnation and rinsing tests, aqueous chloride, sulfate, and zinc concentrations sometimes exceeded regulatory water quality and aquatic toxicity levels. Repeated rinsing of the slag resulted in water conductivity and sulfate concentration differences. To better understand and predict the impacts of unbound ACBFS, additional fundamental studies and field investigations are recommended. Unbound ACBFS is not recommended for use near environmentally sensitive areas, drinking water sources, habituated areas, and where it may have water contact (i.e., waterways, wetlands, reservoirs, and groundwater).

Toxicity and chemical composition of commercial road palliatives versus oil and gas produced waters

Abstract:Across the United States, road palliatives are applied to roads for maintenance operations that improve road safety. In the winter, solid rock salts and brine solutions are used to reduce the accumulation of snow and ice, while in the summer, dust suppressants are used to minimize fugitive dust emissions. Many of these products are chloride-based salts that have been linked to freshwater salinization, toxicity to aquatic organisms, and damage to infrastructure. To minimize these impacts, organic products have been gaining attention, though their widespread adoption has been limited due to their higher cost. In some states, using produced water from conventionally drilled oil and gas wells (OGPWs) on roads is permitted as a cost-effective alternative to commercial products, despite its typically elevated concentrations of heavy metals, radioactivity, and organic micropollutants. In this study, 17 road palliatives used for winter and summer road maintenance were collected and their chemical composition and potential human toxicity were characterized. Results from this study demonstrated that liquid brine solutions had elevated levels of trace metals (Zn, Cu, Sr, Li) that could pose risks to human and environmental health. The radium activity of liquid calcium chloride products was comparable to the activity of OGPWs and could be a significant source of radium to the environment. The organic fractions of evaluated OGPWs and chloride-based products posed little risk to human health. However, organic-based dust suppressants regulated toxicity pathways related to xenobiotic metabolism, lipid metabolism, endocrine disruption, and oxidative stress, indicating their use could lead to environmental harm and health risks to operators handing these products and residents living near treated roads.

Abstract:We report 2 cases of muscle metastases from primary lung cancer (an adenocarcinoma and one epidermoid carcinoma). In one patient the metastases revealed the disease. This site of metastasis seems to be exceptional since only 46 cases have been published, but its frequency is probably underestimated. A retrospective study of the last 10 years and an exhaustive review of the literature have enabled us to determine the frequency of muscle metastases from lung cancer and their physiopathological implications.
Development of Soil Substitutes for the Sustainable Land Reclamation of Coal Mine-Affected Areas

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper was to outline a novel approach for the use of industrial by-products generated in coal mines and coal-fired power plants as the components for artificial soils. Several coal combustion by-products, coal mine waste and organic waste materials were tested at laboratory scale for use in the reclamation of areas degraded by coal mining activity. The role of artificial soils was the land rehabilitation of the high acidic waste heap. The results revealed that the amounts of organic matter (14.87–25.01%) and nutrients in the soil substitutes were sufficient to support plant growth, i.e., N (0.37–0.51%), P (0.23–0.47%), K (1.78–3.17%), Ca (4.93–8.39%) and Mg (1.16–1.71%). A phytotoxicity test using white mustard (Sinapis alba) seeds under laboratory conditions showed good germination results (56–66%) for three soil substitutes that did not contain fly ash from biomass combustion, compared to the reference soil (84%). The relationships established for the aqueous leachate parameters of soil substitutes vs. the Sinapis alba germination revealed negative correlations with electrical conductivity (r = −0.88), SO42− (r = −0.91) and Cl− (r = −0.70) ions; the two latter ones were responsible for the salinity which hampered the germination process of the soil substitutes. Moreover, quite similar correlations were obtained between the germination of Sinapis alba and the trace elements of the soil substitutes: Fe (r = −0.69), Cd (r = −0.72), Cu (r = −0.80), Pb (r = −0.78) and Zn (r = −0.74). However, negative and significant correlations in aqueous leachates were shown only with Ni concentration (r = −0.73). The relevance of these results for the effect of salinity on germination and the early growth of S. alba was discussed in detail and was confirmed with the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The study proved that the physicochemical characteristic of recycled wastes exhibited their potential usefulness for the reclamation of affected areas such as mine waste heaps.

Limited access to oxygen reduces the release of harmful trace elements from submerged alum shale debris

Abstract:Construction and mining activities in acid-producing alum shale regions often produce large volumes of crushed rock. Disposal under groundwater level (e.g., a bog) may minimize oxygen access. In this study, the effect of varying oxygen access on the leaching potential of alum shale was investigated by submerging tunnel construction rock debris in synthetic rainwater under atmospheric (AOC) and low oxygen conditions (LOC) for 52 weeks. The sulphate increase and nitrate decrease in the leachates suggested that pyrite (FeS2) in the alum shale was oxidized, but carbonates originating from calcite dissolution provided sufficient buffering capacity (leachate pH ~7.7 over 52 weeks), resulting in neutral rock drainage. Less available oxygen led to significantly lower production of sulphate and acid from pyrite oxidation, reducing the release of harmful elements. Under LOC, the leaching of Mo, Co, Ni, Zn and Cd was 2-4 times lower than under AOC and the lower buffering requirement diminished the release of Ca as well as divalent cations (Mg, Sr, Mn) likely present as impurities in calcite. Contrastingly, limited pyrite oxidation led to less oversaturation with respect to BaSO4 and lower release of Fe in the LOC leachates. Thus, co-precipitation of 226Ra was inhibited and scavenging of leached V, As and Sb by newly formed Fe(OH)3 was not as dominant as in the AOC systems. Leaching of U was ~20 % higher under LOC likely due to enhanced complexation by dissolved carbonate. In general, element leaching rates were slower under low O2 levels. Characterization of water collected at the disposal site after ~1.2 years of discarding tunnel materials showed that the weathering of debris submerged in the open, water-filled pond occurred similarly to leaching under low oxygen conditions. Overall, these results highlight the importance of minimal oxygen access or anaerobic conditions when acid-producing rock waste is stored under water.
Environmental performance of reusing a contaminated soil solidified/stabilized by a low-carbon binder as roadway subgrade material

Abstract:A comprehensive field study was conducted to evaluate the environmental performance of a roadway subgrade consisting of contaminated soil solidified/stabilized with a hydroxyapatite-based binder (termed as SPC in this study). Traditional Portland cement (PC) was used as a control binder for comparison purposes. The environmental properties including soil pH, soil leachability, and chemical speciation of target contaminants including nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) were investigated at 1 d, 7 d, 28 d, and 600 d after construction of the roadway subgrade. Furthermore, the field migration distances of Ni and Zn released from the subgrade to the off-site clean soil were investigated after 600-d of exposure to the atmospheric environment. The results showed that SPC solidification/stabilization was not only effective for reducing the soil leachability but improving the chemical stability of Ni and Zn in the contaminated soil. The soil pH was slightly acidic after SPC treatment. The observed maximum distance of Ni and Zn migrated from subgrade to the off-site clean soil was approximately 5 cm at 600 d. The SPC binder exhibited superior performance to PC in terms of immobilization effectiveness of Ni and Zn, soil pH, and curing time.

Recycling of MSWI-bottom ash in paved constructions in Sweden - A risk assessment

Abstract:This paper presents results from a risk assessment of recycling pre-treated bottom ash from municipal solid waste incineration as a subbase layer in certain asphalt paved constructions in Sweden. Based on a model for assessing environmental and health risks at contaminated areas, previously developed by the Swedish EPA and by the Swedish Geotechnical Institute, target values for total content and porewater concentrations were calculated. Three different construction sizes and geometries were considered; a 1 km long road of 10 and 20 m width, respectively, and an application of 100 × 300 m. Additionally, different technical solutions of the use of bottom as in road embankments were considered. Compared to risk assessments conducted in other countries, target values are generally higher, but in the same order of magnitude. Total lead concentrations in dust potentially emitted during construction and demolition of the bottom ash is identified as a critical factor. It requires particular attention when planning for or carrying out groundwork constructions with pre-treated bottom ash. As exposure to dust and bioavailaibility of lead in bottom ash are likely to be overestimated by the underlying risk model, higher target values for lead in bottom ash should be possible for the envisaged construction purposes without affecting the general risk level. As no data is available on actual dust production and deposition by constructing and demolishing subbase layers of pre-treated bottom ash, this should be a part of future studies in order to narrow down lead target values.

Abstract:Exposed soils associated with active construction sites provide opportunities for erosion and sediment transport during storm events, introducing risks associated with excess sediment to downstream infrastructure and aquatic biota. A better understanding of the drivers of sediment transport in construction site runoff is needed to improve the design and performance of erosion and sediment control measures (ESCMs). Eleven monitoring locations on 3 active road construction sites in central Ohio were established to characterize runoff quality from points of concentrated flow during storm events. Grab samples were analyzed for total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, and particle size distribution (PSD). Median TSS concentrations and turbidity levels across all samples were 626 mg/L (range 25–28,600 mg/L) and 759 NTU (range 22–33,000 NTU), respectively. The median PSD corresponded to a silty clay loam, mirroring the soil texture of much of Ohio's subsoils. TSS concentrations and turbidity were significantly positively correlated with the rainfall intensity 10 min prior to sample collection, suggesting that higher flow rates created greater shear stress on bare soil which resulted in more erosion. Conversely, rainfall duration was negatively correlated with particle size, indicating that prolonged moisture from rainfall promoted the dispersion of soil aggregates which mobilized smaller particles. Multivariable linear regression models revealed that higher rainfall intensities corresponded to higher turbidity values, while higher TSS concentrations were associated with higher rainfall intensities, depths, and durations. Results from this study highlight the importance of reducing raindrop impact and subsequent shear stress applied by concentrated flows through the use of ESCMs to limit sediment export from construction sites.

Environmental assessment of alkali-activated materials based on agro-industrial waste as alkaline activators through leaching tests

Abstract:Global circular economy drives the development of sustainable alkali activated materials (AAM) for use as construction material from industrial by-products and wastes. The assessment of the potentially hazardous substances release of these new material combinations into the soil and groundwater over time is essential. In this study, the aim is the environmental assessment of three AAMs based on blast furnace slag (BFS), activated with almond shell biomass ash (ABA) as potassium source and three solid sources of silica from the agricultural industry, rice husk ash (RHA), spent diatomaceous earth (SDE) and bamboo leaf ash (BLA), using European horizontal leaching tests proposed for construction materials, for monolithic form, Dynamic Surface Leaching Test (DSLT) and for granular form, Up-flow Percolation Test and the Compliance leaching test, by simulating different scenarios of their entire life cycle. The leaching results of the AAM showed the effectiveness of the inertization of all the recycled materials studied, which exceeded some inert materials limits, by means of the activation process. Despite the absence of significant differences in the leaching mechanisms of the oxyanions As, Cr, Mo, Sb, Se and V between the three AAMs developed, they presented different long-term leaching behavior depending on their form, monolithic, or granular, and therefore in their different life cycle stages. Therefore, it is concluded that although the incorporation of agro-industrial waste as alternative activators in BFS based AAM according to the Dutch Soil Quality Decree (for unrestricted use of monolithic and granular materials) is an environmentally acceptable option, the design of waste derived AAMs should be assessed by means of a combination of leaching tests that cover their expected life cycle.
The Fate of Pollutants in Porous Asphalt Pavements, Laboratory Experiments to Investigate Their Potential to Impact Environmental Health

Abstract:Pervious Paving Systems (PPS) are part of a sustainable approach to drainage in which excess surface water is encouraged to infiltrate through their structure, during which potentially toxic elements, such as metals and hydrocarbons are treated by biodegradation and physical entrapment and storage. However, it is not known where in the PPS structure these contaminants accumulate, which has implications for environmental health, particularly during maintenance, as well as consequences for the recycling of material from the PPS at the end-of-life. A 1 m³ porous asphalt (PA) PPS test rig was monitored for 38 months after monthly additions of road sediment (RS) (367.5 g in total) and unused oil (430 mL in total), characteristic of urban loadings, were applied. Using a rainfall simulator, a typical UK rainfall rate of 15 mm/h was used to investigate its efficiency in dealing with contamination. Water quality of the effluent discharged from the rig was found to be suitable for discharge to most environments. On completion of the monitoring, a core was taken down through its surface, and samples of sediment and aggregate were taken. Analysis showed that most of the sediment remained in the surface course, with metal levels lower than the original RS, but higher than clean, unused aggregate or PA. However, even extrapolating these concentrations to 20 years' worth of in-service use (the projected life of PPS) did not suggest their accumulation would present an environmental pollution risk when carrying out maintenance of the pavement and also indicates that the material could be recycled at end-of-life.

Abstract:This study set out to examine the unconventional use of raw oil shale (OS) as fine aggregate in concrete instead of its traditional utilisation as a pollutant energy source aiming to hinder the depletion of natural resources. Oil shale particles have been used to replace sand in concrete with 30 wt.-% and 50 wt.-% ratios. Part of the used OS particles was treated with silane prior to their addition in concrete. The fresh, mechanical, and durability properties, along with the micro-properties and surface chemistry of mixtures, were analysed by running the slump, compressive strength, permeability, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests, respectively. Five concrete mixtures consisting of 30 samples with the size of 150 mm x 150 mm x 150 mm were prepared to serve the testing programme of the study. The results revealed the formation of a well-bonded interfacial transition zone between untreated OS particles and the cementitious matrix due to the presence of pozzolanic materials in OS. However, micro cracks and enlarged capillary pores were witnessed in treated OS mixtures along with a weak interfacial transition zone between the treated OS and the cementitious matrix. Moreover, the use of 30 wt.-% untreated OS reduced the water absorption of concrete by 9% (absorption rate of 9.5%), while other mixtures experienced an increase in their water absorption with a maximum increase of 42% when using 50 wt.-% treated OS (absorption rate of 10.7%). All mixtures attained a reduction in their compressive strength compared to control sample when employing treated and untreated OS in concrete, with a minimum reduction of 13% when using 30 wt.-% untreated OS (compressive strength of 26 MPa). The strength reduction in untreated OS mixtures is due to the formation of free CaO and free SiO2, which promote concrete expansion. The interference between silane and kerogen in OS was the main reason behind the strength reduction in treated OS mixtures. However, this reduction in mixtures’ strength is considered minimal, allowing for their potential use in different construction applications like rigid pavement.
