Abstract:How language began is one of the oldest questions in science, but theories remain speculative due to a lack of direct evidence. Here, we report two experiments that generate empirical evidence to inform gesture-first and vocal-first theories of language origin; in each, we tested modern humans' ability to communicate a range of meanings (995 distinct words) using either gesture or non-linguistic vocalization. Experiment 1 is a cross-cultural study, with signal Producers sampled from Australia ( n = 30, M age = 32.63, s.d. = 12.42) and Vanuatu ( n = 30, M age = 32.40, s.d. = 11.76). Experiment 2 is a cross-experiential study in which Producers were either sighted ( n = 10, M age = 39.60, s.d. = 11.18) or severely vision-impaired ( n = 10, M age = 39.40, s.d. = 10.37). A group of undergraduate student Interpreters guessed the meaning of the signals created by the Producers ( n = 140). Communication success was substantially higher in the gesture modality than the vocal modality (twice as high overall; 61.17% versus 29.04% success). This was true within cultures, across cultures and even for the signals produced by severely vision-impaired participants. The success of gesture is attributed in part to its greater universality (i.e. similarity in form across different Producers). Our results support the hypothesis that gesture is the primary modality for language creation.

Abstract:Background: Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are lifelong challenges, dramatically impairing communicative abilities with long term impacts on outcomes. Children with DLD and/or ASD benefit from interventions to improve language skills, but those are hard to reach in rural areas. Caregiver hand gestures can improve comprehension of content words in DLD/ASD via multimodal processing. However, little is known about how gestures affect comprehension of grammatical determiners (e.g., “ the” or “ an”). Methods: We investigate whether combining determiner phrases (e.g., “ the apple” or “ another apple”) with specific gestures (signs for [same] or [different] from American Sign Language) can improve language comprehension in hearing children with DLD/ASD, compared to TD controls. Operating Gazepoint or Tobii eye tracking at participants’ homes or a university space, we use a constrained act-out task presented via a custom-made interactive computer game with pre-recorded video prompts, or a toy and paper version, using a pretest-training-test-posttest protocol. Results: After evaluating 35 participants with ASD, DLD, and TD, ages 2-31, we identified three subgroups (across diagnoses) based on their knowledge of determiners at pretest. 51% of participants showed good (adult-like) knowledge across determiners and tests. 26% of participants were unable to complete our interactive game. However, 23% of participants showed initial poor knowledge of “ the”, followed by improvements in the comprehension of “ the” with gestures in the test, which were mostly retained in the posttest. Eye tracking demonstrated consistency between children’s attention to gestures and answers and their behavioral responses. Conclusion: Hand gestures can improve language comprehension in some children with DLD/ASD and TD. Our findings may lead to designing an inclusive intervention, for both children and their caregivers, to improve communication using multiple modalities – both speech and simple gestures which emphasize the main points of the spoken message, thereby supporting rural & underserved families.
American Sign Language Handshapes Reflect Pressures for Communicative Efficiency

Abstract:Communicative efficiency is a key topic in linguistics and cognitive psychology, with many studies demonstrating how the pressure to communicate with minimal effort guides the form of natural language. However, this phenomenon is rarely explored in signed languages. This paper shows how handshapes in American Sign Language (ASL) reflect these efficiency pressures and provides new evidence of communicative efficiency in the visual-gestural modality. We focus on hand configurations in native ASL signs and signs borrowed from English to compare efficiency pressures from both ASL and English usage. First, we develop new methodologies to quantify the articulatory effort needed to produce handshapes and the perceptual effort required to recognize them. Then, we analyze correlations between communicative effort and usage statistics in ASL or English. Our findings reveal that frequent ASL handshapes are easier to produce and that pressures for communicative efficiency mostly come from ASL usage, rather than from English lexical borrowing.

Abstract:Understanding why speakers modify their co-speech hand gestures when speaking to interlocutors provides valuable insight into how these gestures contribute to interpersonal communication in face-to-face and virtual contexts. The current protocols manipulate the visibility of speakers and their interlocutors in tandem in a face-to-face context to examine the impact of visibility on gesture production when communication is challenging. In these protocols, speakers complete tasks such as teaching words from an unfamiliar second language or recounting the events of cartoon vignettes to an interlocutor who is either another participant or a confederate. When performing these tasks, speakers are visible or non-visible to their interlocutor, and the speaker is visible or non-visible to the participant. In the word learning task, speakers and interlocutors visible to one another produce more representational gestures, which convey meaning via handshape and motion, and deictic (pointing) gestures than speakers and interlocutors who are not visible to one another. In the narrative retelling protocol, adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) produced more gestures when speaking to visible interlocutors than non-visible interlocutors. A major strength of the current protocol is its flexibility in terms of the tasks, populations, and gestures examined, and the current protocol can be implemented in videoconferencing as well as face-to-face contexts. Thus, the current protocol has the potential to advance the understanding of gesture production by elucidating its role in interpersonal communication in populations with communication challenges.

Abstract:Blind adults display language‐specificity in their packaging and ordering of events in speech. These differences affect the representation of events in co‐speech gesture––gesturing with speech––but not in silent gesture––gesturing without speech. Here we examine when in development blind children begin to show adult‐like patterns in co‐speech and silent gesture. We studied speech and gestures produced by 30 blind and 30 sighted children learning Turkish, equally divided into 3 age groups: 5–6, 7–8, 9–10 years. The children were asked to describe three‐dimensional spatial event scenes (e.g., running out of a house) first with speech, and then without speech using only their hands. We focused on physical motion events, which, in blind adults, elicit cross‐linguistic differences in speech and co‐speech gesture, but cross‐linguistic similarities in silent gesture. Our results showed an effect of language on gesture when it was accompanied by speech (co‐speech gesture), but not when it was used without speech (silent gesture) across both blind and sighted learners. The language‐specific co‐speech gesture pattern for both packaging and ordering semantic elements was present at the earliest ages we tested the blind and sighted children. The silent gesture pattern appeared later for blind children than sighted children for both packaging and ordering. Our findings highlight gesture as a robust and integral aspect of the language acquisition process at the early ages and provide insight into when language does and does not have an effect on gesture, even in blind children who lack visual access to gesture. Research Highlights Gestures, when produced with speech (i.e., co‐speech gesture), follow language‐specific patterns in event representation in both blind and sighted children. Gestures, when produced without speech (i.e., silent gesture), do not follow the language‐specific patterns in event representation in both blind and sighted children. Language‐specific patterns in speech and co‐speech gestures are observable at the same time in blind and sighted children. The cross‐linguistic similarities in silent gestures begin slightly later in blind children than in sighted children.

Abstract:Through providing an external support to speech, gesture observation may benefit a student's learning in a variety of areas, including narrative comprehension. Across two studies, we investigated factors that could moderate when gestures are most beneficial to narrative comprehension, including gesture type, task difficulty, and age, in order to help determine when gestures benefit narrative comprehension most. Crucially, observing typical gestures significantly benefited narrative comprehension (measured by specific questions relating to gesture points) compared with atypical or no gestures, which did not differ significantly. When measured through free recall and specific questions, these effects were not moderated by total task difficulty or age. This finding suggests that how beneficial a gesture is for narrative comprehension may depend more on the kind of gesture observed rather than on age or the difficulty of the task. It may be that typical gestures benefit narrative comprehension more than atypical gestures due to the typical gestures being more semantically related to accompanying speech. In a second study, typical gestures were rated as more semantically related to the speech than were atypical gestures. We argue that educators' use of typical, frequently produced iconic gestures that are adequately semantically related to speech may enhance student understanding.

Abstract:For young children, gesture is found to precede and predict language development. However, we are still building a knowledge base about the specific nature of the relationship between gesture and speech. While much of the research on this topic has been conducted with neurotypical children, there is a growing body of work with children who have or are at increased likelihood of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Here, we summarize the literature on relations between gesture and speech, including the role of child gesture production as well as that of gesture exposure (caregiver gesture). We include literature on both neurotypical children and children with or at likelihood of ASD, highlight the similarities and differences across populations, and offer implications for research as well as early identification and intervention.

Abstract:Gestures-hand movements that accompany speech and express ideas-can help children learn how to solve problems, flexibly generalize learning to novel problem-solving contexts, and retain what they have learned. But does it matter who is doing the gesturing? We know that producing gesture leads to better comprehension of a message than watching someone else produce gesture. But we do not know how producing versus observing gesture impacts deeper learning outcomes such as generalization and retention across time. Moreover, not all children benefit equally from gesture instruction, suggesting that there are individual differences that may play a role in who learns from gesture. Here, we consider two factors that might impact whether gesture leads to learning, generalization, and retention after mathematical instruction: (1) whether children see gesture or do gesture and (2) whether a child spontaneously gestures before instruction when explaining their problem-solving reasoning. For children who spontaneously gestured before instruction, both doing and seeing gesture led to better generalization and retention of the knowledge gained than a comparison manipulative action. For children who did not spontaneously gesture before instruction, doing gesture was less effective than the comparison action for learning, generalization, and retention. Importantly, this learning deficit was specific to gesture, as these children did benefit from doing the comparison manipulative action. Our findings are the first evidence that a child's use of a particular representational format for communication (gesture) directly predicts that child's propensity to learn from using the same representational format.

Abstract:Language is produced by bodies that evolved to fulfill a variety of functions, most of them non-communicative. Vestigial influences of adaptation for quadrupedal locomotion are still affecting bimanual actions, and have consequences on manual communication systems such as sign languages of the deaf. We discuss how central pattern generators (CPGs), networks of nerve cells in the spinal cord that drive locomotion, influence bimanual actions with alternating movements to be produced with repeated motion. We demonstrate this influence with data from three unrelated sign languages, American Sign Language, British Sign Language, and Hong Kong Sign Language: in all three sign languages two-handed balanced signs produced with alternating movements have a tendency to be repeated, whereas other types of two-handed balanced signs show the opposite tendency for single movements. These tendencies cannot be fully explained by factors such as iconicity. We propose a motoric account for these results: as alternating bimanual movements are influenced by locomotor patterns, they favor repeated movements.
Analysis of the visual spatiotemporal properties of American Sign Language

Abstract:Careful measurements of the temporal dynamics of speech have provided important insights into phonetic properties of spoken languages, which are important for understanding auditory perception. By contrast, analytic quantification of the visual properties of signed languages is still largely uncharted. Exposure to sign language is a unique experience that could shape and modify low-level visual processing for those who use it regularly (i.e., what we refer to as the Enhanced Exposure Hypothesis). The purpose of the current study was to characterize the visual spatiotemporal properties of American Sign Language (ASL) so that future studies can test the enhanced exposure hypothesis in signers, with the prediction that altered vision should be observed within, more so than outside, the range of properties found in ASL. Using an ultrasonic motion tracking system, we recorded the hand position in 3-dimensional space over time during sign language production of signs, sentences, and narratives. From these data, we calculated several metrics: hand position and eccentricity in space and hand motion speed. For individual signs, we also measured total distance travelled by the dominant hand and total duration of each sign. These metrics were found to fall within a selective range, suggesting that exposure to signs is a specific and unique visual experience, which might alter visual perceptual abilities in signers for visual information within the experienced range, even for non-language stimuli.
Challenges for Linguistically-Driven Computer-Based Sign Recognition from Continuous Signing for American Sign Language

Abstract:There have been recent advances in computer-based recognition of isolated, citation-form signs from video. There are many challenges for such a task, not least the naturally occurring inter- and intra- signer synchronic variation in sign production, including sociolinguistic variation in the realization of certain signs. However, there are several significant factors that make recognition of signs from continuous signing an even more difficult problem. This article presents an overview of such challenges, based in part on findings from a large corpus of linguistically annotated video data for American Sign Language (ASL). Some linguistic regularities in the structure of signs that can boost handshape and sign recognition are also discussed.

Benefits of Enacting and Observing Gestures on Foreign Language Vocabulary Learning: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:The integration of physical movements, such as gestures, into learning holds potential for enhancing foreign language (L2) education. Uncovering whether actively performing gestures during L2 learning is more, or equally, effective compared to simply observing such movements is central to deepening our understanding of the efficacy of movement-based learning strategies. Here, we present a meta-analysis of seven studies containing 309 participants that compares the effects of gesture self-enactment and observation on L2 vocabulary learning. The results showed that gesture observation was just as effective for L2 learning as gesture enactment, based on free recall, cued L2 recognition, and cued native language recognition performance, with a large dispersion of true effect across studies. Gesture observation may be sufficient for inducing embodied L2 learning benefits, in support of theories positing shared mechanisms underlying enactment and observation. Future studies should examine the effects of gesture-based learning over longer time periods with larger sample sizes and more diverse word classes.

Abstract:The impact of adverse listening conditions on spoken language perception is well established, but the role of suboptimal viewing conditions on signed language processing is less clear. Viewing angle, i.e. the physical orientation of a perceiver relative to a signer, varies in many everyday deaf community settings for L1 signers and may impact comprehension. Further, processing from various viewing angles may be more difficult for late L2 learners of a signed language, with less variation in sign input while learning. Using a semantic decision task in a distance priming paradigm, we show that British Sign Language signers are slower and less accurate to comprehend signs shown from side viewing angles, with L2 learners in particular making disproportionately more errors when viewing signs from side angles. We also investigated how individual differences in mental rotation ability modulate processing signs from different angles. Speed and accuracy on the BSL task correlated with mental rotation ability, suggesting that signers may mentally represent signs from a frontal view, and use mental rotation to process signs from other viewing angles. Our results extend the literature on viewpoint specificity in visual recognition to linguistic stimuli. The data suggests that L2 signed language learners should maximise their exposure to diverse signed language input, both in terms of viewing angle and other difficult viewing conditions to maximise comprehension.

Abstract:Languages are neither designed in classrooms nor drawn from dictionaries—they are products of human minds and human interactions. However, it is challenging to understand how structure grows in these circumstances because generations of use and transmission shape and reshape the structure of the languages themselves. Laboratory studies on language emergence investigate the origins of language structure by requiring participants, prevented from using their own natural language(s), to create a novel communication system and then transmit it to others. Because the participants in these lab studies are already speakers of a language, it is easy to question the relevance of lab‐based findings to the creation of natural language systems. Here, we take the findings from a lab‐based language emergence paradigm and test whether the same pattern is also found in a new natural language: Nicaraguan Sign Language. We find evidence that signers of Nicaraguan Sign Language may show the same biases seen in lab‐based language emergence studies: (1) they appear to condition word order based on the semantic dimension of intensionality and extensionality, and (2) they adjust this conditioning to satisfy language‐internal order constraints. Our study adds to the small, but growing literature testing the relevance of lab‐based studies to natural language birth, and provides convincing evidence that the biases seen in the lab play a role in shaping a brand new language.

Beyond words: evidence for automatic language-gesture integration of symbolic gestures but not dynamic landscapes

Abstract:Understanding actions based on either language or action observation is presumed to involve the motor system, reflecting the engagement of an embodied conceptual network. We examined how linguistic and gestural information were integrated in a series of cross-domain priming studies. We varied the task demands across three experiments in which symbolic gestures served as primes for verbal targets. Primes were clips of symbolic gestures taken from a rich set of emblems. Participants responded by making a lexical decision to the target (Experiment 1), naming the target (Experiment 2), or performing a semantic relatedness judgment (Experiment 3). The magnitude of semantic priming was larger in the relatedness judgment and lexical decision tasks compared to the naming task. Priming was also observed in a control task in which the primes were pictures of landscapes with conceptually related verbal targets. However, for these stimuli, the amount of priming was similar across the three tasks. We propose that action observation triggers an automatic, pre-lexical spread of activation, consistent with the idea that language-gesture integration occurs in an obligatory and automatic fashion.
Assessment and treatment of gesture in neurogenic communication disorders: An international survey of practice

Abstract:Background Gesture and speech collaborate in conveying meaning, and gesture is often leveraged by people with neurogenic communication disorders, such as aphasia, cognitive‐communicative impairments and primary progressive aphasia, when words fail them. Because gesture is imagistic, transitory and holistic, there are inherent challenges when assessing and treating it. Aims The survey had three primary research questions: (1) what gesture assessment practices, and (2) what gesture treatment practices, are employed by speech and language therapists (SLTs) internationally; and (3) what are the factors that influence these practices? Methods and Procedures An online survey of practice using Qualtrics was piloted and then disseminated to practising SLTs working with people with neurogenic communication disorders. In addition to descriptive statistics summarising across the three research questions, statistical comparisons were made for two independent groups: primary work setting (research versus clinical), and primary work setting considering years of experience specific to neurogenic communication disorders (research, high; research, low; clinical, high; and clinical, low). Outcomes and Results A total of 130 international SLTs completed the first two parts of the survey. A total of 107 completed all four sections of the survey. Fifty percent of respondents reported assessing gesture sometimes/for some clients, with only 5% reporting that they never assessed gesture. Nearly 70% of respondents reported never using a published test to evaluate gesture, with qualitative results suggesting a lack of formal assessments. This was further highlighted by the most prominent barrier being a lack of published tests (50% of respondents said this). The primary reason for evaluating gesture was to assess nonverbal communication. There was no significant difference in gesture assessment practices across comparison groups. The research group, and those within the research group with most years of experience, tended to target gestures during treatment and write treatment goals containing gesture more than other respondents. The most common facilitator to assessing or treating gesture was that the family or individual prioritised gesture for enhancing communication (53.1% of respondents). No group differences were identified for barriers/facilitators. Conclusions and Implications Findings indicate that whilst gesture is a critical nonverbal communicative behaviour, there is an unmet need for empirical and standardised methods for assessing gesture in speech and language clinical practice and there is a lack of gesture‐specific treatment resources. SLTs working in research settings may feel more able, or have more resources, to include gesture during treatment. Essential next steps include creating empirical and standardised methods for assessing gesture in speech and language clinical practice. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS What is already known on the subject Gesture is a complex and crucial aspect of communication. It is a key part of the role of speech and language therapists (SLTs), as described in clinical guidelines, to assess people with aphasia's use of gesture and consider whether it could be enhanced through treatment. What this study adds to existing knowledge This is the first international survey of practice focusing on gesture assessment and treatment. It highlights the variety of methods used by SLTs to assess and treat gesture, the importance they attach to this area and the need for standardised assessment tools and treatment resources. What are the clinical implications of this work? This study provides a comprehensive overview of practices for assessing and treating gesture in neurogenic communication disorders, as well as a list of gesture resources being actively used by clinicians and researchers. These may be useful for clinicians looking to expand their understanding of approaches and resources for assessment and treatment in this domain. The study also reports on the reasons clinicians assess gesture and the barriers and facilitators they encounter which may inform clinical practice in this area.

Abstract:The purpose of this investigation was to assess the effect of American Sign Language (ASL) instruction on typical hearing kindergarten children's literacy in four specific areas: receptive English vocabulary, expressive English vocabulary, ASL ability, and English emergent reading level. The research was specifically modeled after a 1997 United Kingdom, Sign in Education, project in which a deaf teacher delivered instruction to hearing students using British Sign Language (BSL). The findings from the current United States study indicate hearing kindergarten students receiving ASL instruction made statistically significant gains in their receptive English vocabulary, maintained an age appropriate use of expressive English vocabulary, acquired a sufficient level of ASL phonology and morphology to begin to communicate in the visual‐gestural language, and tested higher than similar students on Marie M. Clay's (1993) reading placement measures.

Abstract:Abstract The purpose of the present study was to investigate the mediational role of gesture and body movement/positioning between a teacher and an English language learner in a second-grade classroom. Responding to Thibault’s (2011) call for understanding language through whole-body sense making, aspects of gesture and body positioning were analyzed for their role as mediational tools for meaning making during a math assignment. Analysis of the teacher-student dyad provides insight as to how they moved from simply exchanging answers to using positions and gestures to embody meaning and feelings, thus establishing strategic ways to solve communication problems in the future. A shift to embodying the communication task provided new meanings not previously afforded while sitting at a desk. Combining a Gibsonian (1979) ecological perspective with Vygotskian (1978, 1986) sociocultural theory provides a way to view the role of embodiment in the social practice of second language learning (van Lier, 2004). Findings provide evidence that gesture along with bodily positions and [inter]actions play a central role in this dyadic meaning- making experience. The data demonstrate the interactive nature of the semiotic resources of the activity (i.e., speech, gesture/hands, math graph, whiteboard), with their materialized bodily/speech-voiced acts coinciding with Thibault’s (2004, 2011) explanation of human meaning-making activity as a hybrid phenomenon that includes a cross-coupled relationship between semiotic affordances and physical-material body activity. This perspective embraces Vygotsky’s (1978, 1997a) view of dialectical development including the importance of psychological and materialized-physical tools such as gesture in dealing with language learning processes (McNeill, 2012).
