Abstract:The photoacoustic effect in liquids, generated by metal nanoparticles excited with short laser pulses, offers high contrast imaging and promising medical treatment techniques. Understanding the role of the thermal boundary resistance (TBR) and the laser pulse duration in the generation mechanism of acoustic waves is essential to implement efficient photoacoustic nanotransducers. This work theoretically investigates, for the paradigmatic case of water-immersed gold nanocylinders, the role of the TBR and of laser pulse duration in the competition between the launching mechanisms: the thermophone and the mechanophone. In the thermophone, the nanoparticle acts as a nanoheater and the wave is launched by water thermal expansion. In the mechanophone, the nanoparticle directly acts as a nanopiston. Specifically, for a gold-water interface, the thermophone prevails under ns light pulse irradiation, while the mechanophone dominates shortening the pulse to the 10 ps regime. For a graphene-functionalized gold-water interface, instead, the mechanophone dominates over the entire range of explored laser pulse durations. Results point to high-TBR, liquid-immersed nanoparticles as potentially efficient photoacoustic nanogenerators, with the advantage of keeping the liquid environment temperature unaltered.

Abstract:Ultrafast pump-probe measurements are used to characterize various samples, such as biological cells, bulk, and thin-film structures. However, typical implementations of the pump-probe apparatus are either slow or complex and costly hindering wide deployment. Here we combine a single-cavity dual-comb laser with a simple experimental setup to obtain pump-probe measurements with ultra-high sensitivity, fast acquisition, and high timing precision over long optical delay scan ranges of 12.5 ns that would correspond to a mechanical delay of about 3.75 meters. We employ digital signal balancing to obtain shot-noise-limited detection compatible with pump-probe microscopy deployment. Here we demonstrate ultrafast photoacoustics for thin-film sample characterization. We measured a tungsten layer thickness of 700 ± 4Å with shot-noise-limited detection. Such single-cavity dual-comb lasers can be used for any pump-probe measurements and are especially well-suited for ultrafast photoacoustic studies such as involving ultrasonic echoes, Brillouin oscillations, surface acoustic waves and thermal dynamics.

Abstract:Irradiation of solid surfaces with intense ultrashort laser pulses represents a unique way of depositing energy into materials. It allows to realize states of extreme electronic excitation and/or very high temperature and pressure, and to drive materials close to and beyond fundamental stability limits. As a consequence, structural changes and phase transitions often occur along unusual pathways and under strongly non-equilibrium conditions. Due to the inherent multiscale nature - both temporally and spatially - of these irreversible processes their direct experimental observation requires techniques that combine high temporal resolution with the appropriate spatial resolution and the capability to obtain good quality data on a single pulse/event basis. In this respect fourth generation light sources, namely short wavelength, short pulse free electron lasers (FELs) are offering new and fascinating possibilities. As an example, this chapter will discuss the results of scattering experiments carried at the FLASH free electron laser at DESY (Hamburg, Germany), which allowed us to resolve laser-induced structure formation at surfaces on the nanometer to sub-micron length scale and in temporal regimes ranging from picoseconds to several nanoseconds with sub-picosecond resolution.

Abstract:Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a metal additive manufacturing technique involving complex interplays between vapor, liquid, and solid phases. Despite LPBF's advantageous capabilities compared to conventional manufacturing methods, the underlying physical phenomena can result in inter-regime instabilities followed by transitions between conduction and keyhole melting regimes - leading to defects. We investigate these issues through operando synchrotron X-ray imaging synchronized with acoustic emission recording, during the remelting processes of LPBF-produced thin walls, monitoring regime changes occurring under constant laser processing parameters. The collected data show an increment in acoustic signal amplitude when switching from conduction to keyhole regime, which we correlate to changes in laser absorptivity. Moreover, a full correlation between X-ray imaging and the acoustic signals permits the design of a simple filtering algorithm to predict the melting regimes. As a result, conduction, stable keyhole, and unstable keyhole regimes are identified with a time resolution of 100 µs, even under rapid transitions, providing a straightforward method to accurately detect undesired processing regimes without the use of artificial intelligence.

Abstract:Using a picosecond pump-probe ultrasonic technique, we study the propagation of high-amplitude, laser-generated longitudinal coherent acoustic pulses in the viscoelastic fragile glass former DC704. We observe an increase of almost 10% in acoustic pulse propagation speed at the highest optical pump fluence which is a result of the supersonic nature of nonlinear propagation in the viscous medium. From our measurement, we deduce the nonlinear acoustic parameter of the glass former in the gigahertz frequency range across the glass transition temperature.

Abstract:The formation of an electron-hole plasma during the interaction of intense femtosecond laser pulses with transparent solids lies at the heart of femtosecond laser processing. Advanced micro- and nanomachining applications require improved control over the excitation characteristics. Here, we relate the emission of low-order harmonics to the strong laser-field-induced plasma formation. Together with a measurement of the total plasma density we identify the contribution of two competing ionization mechanisms - strong-field and electron-impact ionization.

Abstract:The use of femtosecond laser pulses to impulsively excite thermal and mechanical transients in matter has led, in the last years, to the development of picosecond acoustics. Recently, the pump-probe approach has been applied to nano-engineered materials to optically generate and detect acoustic waves in the GHz-THz frequency range. In this paper, we review the latest advances on ultrafast generation and detection of thermal gradients and pseudo-surface acoustic waves in two-dimensional lattices of metallic nanostructures. Comparing the experimental findings to the numeric analysis of the full thermo-mechanical problem, these materials emerge as model systems to investigate both the mechanical and thermal energy transfer at the nanoscale. The sensitivity of the technique to the nanostructures mass and shape variations, coupled to the phononic crystal properties of the lattices opens the way to a variety of applications ranging from hypersonic waveguiding to mass sensors with femtosecond time-resolution.ens the way to a variety of applications ranging from hypersonic waveguiding to mass sensors with femtosecond time-resolution.

Abstract:We present time-resolved x-ray reflectivity measurements on laser excited coherent and incoherent surface deformations of thin metallic films. Based on a kinematical diffraction model, we derive the surface amplitude from the diffracted x-ray intensity and resolve transient surface excursions with sub-Angstrom spatial precision and 70 ps temporal resolution. The novel analysis allows for decomposition of the surface amplitude into multiple coherent acoustic modes and a substantial contribution from incoherent phonons which constitute the sample heating.

Abstract:Understanding the solid target dynamics resulting from the interaction with an ultrashort laser pulse is a challenging fundamental multi-physics problem involving atomic and solid-state physics, plasma physics, and laser physics. Knowledge of the initial interplay of the underlying processes is essential to many applications ranging from low-power laser regimes like laser-induced ablation to high-power laser regimes like laser-driven ion acceleration. Accessing the properties of the so-called pre-plasma formed as the laser pulse's rising edge ionizes the target is complicated from the theoretical and experimental point of view, and many aspects of this laser-induced transition from solid to overdense plasma over picosecond timescales are still open questions. On the one hand, laser-driven ion acceleration requires precise control of the pre-plasma because the efficiency of the acceleration process crucially depends on the target properties at the arrival of the relativistic intensity peak of the pulse. On the other hand, efficient laser ablation requires, for example, preventing the so-called "plasma shielding". By capturing the dynamics of the initial stage of the interaction, we report on a detailed visualization of the pre-plasma formation and evolution. Nanometer-thin diamond-like carbon foils are shown to transition from solid to plasma during the laser rising edge with intensities < 10 16 W/cm2. Single-shot near-infrared probe transmission measurements evidence sub-picosecond dynamics of an expanding plasma with densities above 10 23 cm −3 (about 100 times the critical plasma density). The complementarity of a solid-state interaction model and kinetic plasma description provides deep insight into the interplay of initial ionization, collisions, and expansion.

Abstract:Optoacoustics is a metrology widely used for material characterisation. In this study, a measurement setup for the selective determination of the frequency-resolved phase velocities and attenuations of longitudinal waves over a wide frequency range (3– 55MHz) is presented. The ultrasonic waves in this setup were excited by a pulsed laser within an absorption layer in the thermoelastic regime and directed through a layer of water onto a sample. The acoustic waves were detected using a self-built adaptive interferometer with a photorefractive crystal. The instrument transmits compression waves only, is low-contact, non-destructive, and has a sample-independent excitation. The limitations of the approach were studied both by simulation and experiments to determine how the frequency range and precision can be improved. It was shown that measurements are possible for all investigated materials (silicon, silicone, aluminium, and water) and that the relative error for the phase velocity is less than 0.2 .

Laser Scanning Microscopy for Tomographic Imaging of Roughness and Point Absorbers in Optical Surfaces

Abstract:High-precision laser interferometric instruments require optical surfaces with a close to perfect contour, as well as low scattering and absorption. Especially point absorbers are problematic because they heat up at high optical intensities and locally deform the otherwise flat surface, resulting in correlations between absorption and contour. Here, we present a laser scanning microscopy approach for the reconstruction of the two complementary images of an optical surface. The 'phase image' is related to the surface profile including roughness. The 'loss image' localizes point absorbers. Our experiment achieves a sensitivity of up to (3.1 $\pm$ 1.4) fm/$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ and a (5.29 $\pm$ 0.06) $\mathrm{\mu}$m lateral resolution. The two images show correlations for some features proving the particular strength of our tomographic approach, which should help further improving optical surfaces or to understand dynamic processes of surface physics.

Abstract:Time-resolved experiments demonstrate that the removal of material from the surface of metals and semiconductors following irradiation with pico- or femtosecond laser pulses occurs on a nanosecond time scale. It is shown that short-pulse laser ablation can be interpreted in terms of transient thermal processes involving states of matter with unusual thermodynamic, hydrodynamic and optical properties.

Abstract:The corrugated rolling process is a new type of metal clad plate production method, and the high-precision testing of the corrugated interface is of great significance to the improvement of product quality. This paper integrates laser ultrasonics and Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT) to characterize the corrugated interface accurately. A photoacoustic platform is developed for the non-contact automatic acquisition of laser ultrasonic signals, and these signals are filtered and gated to achieve high-quality imaging. Meanwhile the effect of signal acquisition efficiency on imaging quality is also discussed. Since the ultrasonic excitation point is separated from the detection point in this experiment, an interface profile calculation method based on the ellipses' common tangent line is developed, and the double-layer imaging of the corrugated clad plate is realized using the fitting curve of the interface profile and Fermat's principle. The results show that the image obtained by this method are consistent with the results obtained by the 3D surface profiler and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), which indicates that this method can not only provides an essential reference for the research of corrugated rolling process, but also provides new approaches for non-contact non-destructive-testing applications in the materials processing industry.

Abstract:Control over intensity, shape, direction, and phase of coherent light is essential in numerous fields, reaching from gravitational wave astronomy over quantum metrology and ultrafast sciences to semi-conductor fabrication. Modern laser optics, however, frequently demands parameter regimes where either the wavelength or the optical power restricts control due to linear absorption, light-induced damage or optical nonlinearity. The properties of solid media, upon which most photonic control schemes rely, impose these limitations. We propose to circumvent these constraints using gaseous media tailored by high-intensity ultrasound waves. We demonstrate a first implementation of this approach by deflecting ultrashort laser pulses using ultrasound waves in ambient air, entirely omitting transmissive solid media. At optical peak powers of 20 GW exceeding previous limits of solid-based acousto-optic modulation by about three orders of magnitude, we reach a deflection efficiency greater than 50% while preserving excellent beam quality. Our approach is not limited to laser pulse deflection via acousto-optic modulation: gas-phase photonic schemes controlled by sonic waves can prospectively be translated to various optical methods, e.g., lenses or waveguides, rendering them effectively invulnerable against damage and opening up new spectral regions.

Abstract:Ultra-intense lasers that ionize and accelerate electrons in solids to near the speed of light can lead to kinetic instabilities that alter the laser absorption and subsequent electron transport, isochoric heating, and ion acceleration. These instabilities can be difficult to characterize, but a novel approach using X-ray scattering at keV energies allows for their visualization with femtosecond temporal resolution on the few nanometer mesoscale. Our experiments on laser-driven flat silicon membranes show the development of structure with a dominant scale of $~60\unit{nm}$ in the plane of the laser axis and laser polarization, and $~95\unit{nm}$ in the vertical direction with a growth rate faster than $0.1/\mathrm{fs}$. Combining the XFEL experiments with simulations provides a complete picture of the structural evolution of ultra-fast laser-induced instability development, indicating the excitation of surface plasmons and the growth of a new type of filamentation instability. These findings provide new insight into the ultra-fast instability processes in solids under extreme conditions at the nanometer level with important implications for inertial confinement fusion and laboratory astrophysics.

Abstract:The combination of microfluidic technology and optical fluids characterization techniques has been recently applied to produce lab-on-a-chip systems. In the present work, bringing together the imaging technique called photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and microfluidic technology were implemented to obtain micro-scale imaging. Laser-induced ultrasound signals were measured from microdroplets produced in a simple T-junction microfluidic system. Single pulse laser images were produced as a result of the combination of the aforementioned techniques, allowing to obtain of geometrical information of the microdroplets and its spatial position.

Abstract:Abstract Intense short laser pulses are an intriguing tool for tailoring surface properties via ultra-fast melting of the surface layer of an irradiated target. Despite extensive studies on the interaction of femto-second laser interaction with matter, the initial steps of the morphological changes are not yet fully understood. Here, we reveal that substantial surface structure changes occur at energy densities far below the melting threshold. By using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy we resolve atomic-scale changes, i.e. the creation of nanosized adatom and vacancy clusters. The two cluster types have distinct non-linear fluence-dependencies. A theoretical analysis reveals their creation and motion to be non-thermal in nature. The formation of these atomistic changes, individually resolved here for the first time, recast our understanding of how surfaces respond to low-intensity ultra-short laser illumination. A visualization and control of the initial morphological changes upon laser illumination are not only of fundamental interest, but pave the way for the designing material properties through surface structuring.
