Abstract:Most patients with COPD have a combination of abdominal distension, which has been shown to adversely affect pulmonary symptoms, frequency of acute exacerbations, and quality of life in patients with COPD. Warm acupuncture and moxibustion have been shown to be effective in relieving symptoms in patients with COPD combined with abdominal distention. Warm acupuncture and moxibustion are highly effective, easy to perform, and inexpensive forms of traditional Chinese medicine treatments. The standardized practice of warm acupuncture and moxibustion is very important for the treatment of COPD combined with abdominal distension. The specific steps include selecting the appropriate acupoints for needling through syndrome differentiation treatment and selecting moxa sticks of appropriate length for moxibustion for about 30 min after the De-qi. The course of treatment lasts for one week. The following indicators are specifically assessed: the score of the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) and the abdominal distension visual analog scale (VAS). This article will clearly illustrate how to standardize the manipulation of warm acupuncture and moxibustion to relieve COPD combined with abdominal distention.

Abstract:Si and Ge films can be prepared under ultrahigh vacuum conditions by chemical vapor deposition using disilane and digermane as source gases. These gases offer a high sticking probability, and are suitable for atomic layer epitaxy. Using synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, we have examined the surface processes associated with the heteroepitaxial growth of Ge/Si. The measured surface-induced shifts and chemical shifts of the Si 2p and Ge 3d core levels allow us to identify the surface species and to determine the surface chemical composition, and this information is correlated with the atomic features observed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Abstract:Prof.Xu Feng has unique understanding in the treatment of insomnia and has accumula ted rich clinical experiences.Prof.Xu believes that insomnia is divided into two categories,the deficiency and the excess.The deficiency pattern may be transformed into the excess one,or the mixture of both happens.The treatment of insomnia should focus on regulating and consolidating the spleen and the stomach functions.The four diagnostic methods and differentiation should be considered accordingly in the cases of blood stagnation,heat accumulation and damp involved.The modified herbal formulas are used to removing stasis,clearing heat and reducing damp so as to eliminate the pathogens and strengthen the spleen and stomach.As a result,the qi and blood circulation is regulated and the function of spleen and stomach in transformation and transportation is benefited.Additionally,the advice on the proper diet and regulate food intake should be given to cultivate the function of spleen for strengthening the functions of zangfu organs,supplementing qi and blood and harmonizing yin and yang.Consequently,insomnia is prevented.

Abstract:Professor QIU Mao-Iiang is a famous Chinese physician of acupuncture and Chinese medicine in modern time and is one of representative figure of Chengijang acupuncture schools. The theory of "three benefits" of acupuncture for diseases of disgestive system is established according to pathogenesis. He holds that acupuncture is favorable in removing the stagnated liver qi, reinforcing the functions of the spleen and the stomach in treatment of gastroduodenal ulcer. For problems due to spleen deficiency, reinforcing method should be given to the main points, Back-shu points and Yuan-primary points, while reducing method should be given to Front-mu points. Deficiency type of chronic gastritis is much more seen than excessive type. Therefore, the treating principle of acupuncture shoujd be tonifying the spleen and dispeling the cold. Removing the liver qi and regulating qi circulation can be applied in phases. And for special cases, method of tonifying the stomach yin should be used. For gastroptosis, reinforcing qi in the middle jiao should be applied generally. For those with qi stagnation, qi in middle jiao should be regulated. For retention of food and dampness, treatment should focus on removing phlegm and dampness. And the following points can be selected to lift the stomach by long needle, Juque (CV 14), Liangmen (ST 21) and the acupoints around stomach. For treatment of diarrhea, toward the three pathological factors of dampness, heat and cold, treatment of removing dampness, clearing heat and dispelling cold, especially the first one should be applied, and others are selected by differentiation of syndromes. And for gallstone, treating principle should be established according to the theory of qi stagnation, disharmony between the gallbladder and the sto-mach as well as obstruction by substantial pathogens. And regulation of qi, relieving pain, regulating the functions of the gallbladder and the stomach should be applied so as to removing calculus. Professor QIU Mao-Iiang 's theory of "three benefits" of acupuncture for diseases of digestive system is formed on the analysis of the primary and secondary pathologies, the degree of symptoms, progress of the diseases, characteristics of the acupuncture techniques and aims of the treatment. Thus, his theory has great significance in the clinic.

Abstract:Sheng's acupuncture manipulation at bone-nearby acupoints is a set of needling manipulation of the chief physician of TCM, SHENG Xie-sun, summarized through his over 50 years clinical experiences and on the basis of Internal Classic. Regarding this manipulation, on the premise of acupoint selection based on syndrome differentiation, the acupoints close to bone are possibly selected and punctured, with the needle tip toward bone edge, and followed by the technique to achieve reducing purpose. Clinically, the significant immediate analgesia can be achieved in pain disorders such as headache and toothache. Professor Sheng thought, corresponding to the location of needle insertion and needling depth, the tissue layers of needle tip passing through should be considered specially. The site of needle insertion should be changeable so as to ensure the needle tip reaching the bone. This manipulation for analgesia provides a certain guide for acupuncture study, especially for the mechanism study on acupuncture analgesia.

Abstract:Professor XIANG Xian-de's clinical experience of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine on functional dyspepsia is introduced. Inview of the treatment based on syndrome differentiation, professor XIANG uses acupuncture with Chinese herbal medicine, psychological counseling and regular diet, etc. to treat functional dyspepsia comprehensively. In terms of syndrome differentiation, six-meridian and visceral syndrome differentiation are selected;methods such as soothing liver and regulating qi, invigorating spleen and stomach are adopted as the treatment principle; meridians are mainly the conception vessel, stomach meridian of foot-yangming and spleen meridian of foot-taiyin; acupoints are mainly selected with "new ten needles" and both internal and external treatment are advocated; needling method is fast twisting needle insertion; manipulation is adopted with directional supplementation and draining method; and the combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbs is adopted on the treatment. Regular diet, standardized work and rest, five elements music therapy for psychological intervention, give patients positive psychological hints, to achieve the effect of both body and mind.

Abstract:The frequency and amplitude of gastric peristaltic wave were significantly changed in 15 subjects when Sibai (ST 2) and Neiting (ST 44) acupoints of the Stomach Channel of Foot-Yangming were punctured. The results demonstrate that these acupoints are effective for treatment of stomach diseases, providing an experimental basis for the theory of channels and collaterals.
Observations on the Effect of Spleen and Stomach Theory-based Treatment on Cervical Spondylotic Radiculopathy

Abstract:Objective To investigate the feasibility and efficacy of spleen and stomach theory-based treatment for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy(accompanied with spleen deficiency syndrome) and to inherit and validate the classical theory.Methods Sixty-nine patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy accompanied with spleen deficiency syndrome were enrolled and randomly allocated to a treatment group of 36 cases and a control group of 30 cases.The treatment group received acupuncture at points selected according to spleen and stomach theory-based treatment and the control group,conventional acupuncture at points selected along the meridian.The symptoms,signs,pain severity and numbness severity were scored using the Assessment Scale for Cervical Spondylosis and the Visual Analog Scale(VAS) before treatment and after 5 and 10 sessions of treatment in the two groups.The scores and the clinical therapeutic effects were compared between the two groups.Results There were statistically significant post-treatment differences in the VAS,symptom and sign scores between the two groups(P0.05).There was a statistically significant post-treatment difference in the numbness grading score between the two groups(P0.01).There was no statistically significant difference in the total efficacy rate between the two groups(P0.05),but the cure rate and the marked efficacy rate were significantly higher in the treatment group than in the control group and there were statistically significant differences between the two groups(P0.01).Conclusion The symptoms of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy accompanied with spleen deficiency can be relieved in both treatment and control groups,but the method of selecting points according to spleen and stomach theory-based treatment is superior to the routine method of selecting points along the meridian and can more rapidly relieve pain and numbness in the patients.

Abstract:The principle of acupoint stimulation efficacy is based on traditional meridian theory. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of acupoints in treating diseases remain unclear in modern scientific understanding. In this study, we selected the ST36 acupoint for investigation and summarized all relevant literature from the PubMed database over the past 10 years. The results indicate that stimulation of ST36 single acupoints has therapeutic effects mainly in models of respiratory, neurological, digestive, endocrine and immune system diseases. And it can affect the inflammatory state, oxidative stress, respiratory mucus secretion, intestinal flora, immune cell function, neurotransmitter transmission, hormone secretion, the network of Interstitial Cells of Cajal (ICC) and glucose metabolism of the organism in these pathological states. Among them, acupuncture at the ST36 single point has the most prominent function in regulating the inflammatory state, which can mainly affect the activation of MAPK signaling pathway and drive the "molecular-cellular" mode involving macrophages, T-lymphocytes, mast cells (MCs) and neuroglial cells as the core to trigger the molecular level changes of the acupuncture point locally or in the target organ tissues, thereby establishing a multi-system, multi-target, multi-level molecular regulating mechanism. This article provides a comprehensive summary and discussion of the molecular mechanisms and effects of acupuncture at the ST36 acupoint, laying the groundwork for future in-depth research on acupuncture point theory.

Abstract:The active role of "Shen" (mind) in the process of disease treatment has always been valued by scholars of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). "Tiaoshen" (mind-regulating) is regarded as the fundamental component of TCM therapy. "Mind-regulating" acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, as a treatment method for both body and mind, is consistent with the present bio-psycho-social medical model. In recent years, a large number of clinical studies have confirmed the exact efficacy of "mind-regulating" acupuncture and moxibustion therapy. This article reviewed the clinical applications of that in psychosomatic diseases, neurological diseases, and digestive diseases over the last decade. This article also summarized the research progress of various "mind-regulating" acupuncture and moxibustion methods, investigated the theoretical connotations of "Tongdu Tiaoshen" (dredging Governor Vessel and regulating mind) acupuncture, "Shugan Tiaoshen" (soothing liver and regulating mind) acupuncture, and the "Tiaoshen needling technique" (mind-regulating needling technique), and generalized the main acupoint selection rules. Lastly, future development directions were provided for the theoretical basis of clinical application of "mind-regulating" acupuncture and moxibustion therapy for further improvement.

Abstract:The "spleen and stomach" theory of the spleen and stomach includes multiple visceral functions in the process of reception, transportation, and transmission. The "Neijing" clearly points out that "the spleen and stomach are the foundation of the five organs", mainly because they are the source of qi and blood biochemistry, which can transform and disperse qi, blood, and body fluids for use in the human body; The second is the hub for the lifting and lowering of the Qi machine, which can regulate and maintain the normal movement of the human body's Qi machine; The three abilities nourish other organs to maintain the acquired health of the human body, hence it is called the "foundation of acquired life". Abstract:Professor ZHUANG Li-xing's diagnosis and treatment method and manipulation key points of mind-regulation acupuncture for psychosomatic disorders are summarized. Professor ZHUANG proposes that psychosomatic disorders can be subdivided into "mind-body disorder" and "body-mind disorder". The former requires treatment aimed at regulating the mind. The main acupoints are Sishenzhen, Shenting (GV 24), Yintang (GV 24+), Shenmen (HT 7) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6). The additional acupoints are Suliao (GV 25), Shuigou (GV 26), Shenmai (BL 62), Zhaohai (KI 6), Hegu (LI 4) and Taichong (LR 3), etc. The latter requires treatment aimed at improving the original diseases, supplemented by regulating the mind (row acupuncture on the governor vessel). Acupoint selection is based on the theories of brain-mind, and the emphasis is placed on the governor vessel; in the meanwhile, regulating zangfu and qi-blood should be valued. After the arrival of qi, the Daoqi Tongjing method (the specific technique for directing qi and preserving essence) is applied, combined with auricular point sticking and fire needling at affected part to enhance the curative effect.

Abstract:The paper introduces professor WU Zhongchao's clinical experience in treatment of allergic rhinitis by acupuncture and moxibustion. Allergic rhinitis is closely associated with the dysfunction of lung, spleen and kidney. Based on the theory of "band-like function zone of back-shu points", the main acupoints related to the affected zangfu organs are selected to enhance the conductivity, regulate zangfu function and strengthen the antipathogenic qi specially; and the supplementary points are combined in terms of syndrome/pattern differentiation so that both symptoms and root causes of the disease can be treated simultaneously, the symptoms of allergic rhinitis be attenuated and the recurrence be prevented.

Abstract:Chronic atrophic gastritis is a kind of digestive disease which is easy to recur and difficult to be cured. Damp-heat syndrome of spleen and stomach is one of the main syndromes of chronic atrophic gastritis, and the intractability of this disease determines the importance of its prevention and treatment. In this paper, we analyze the prevention and treatment of chronic atrophic gastritis of the damp-heat spleen and stomach type from three aspects of the theory of "treating the disease before it gets worse", and elaborate the etiology of chronic atrophic gastritis of the damp-heat spleen and stomach type in Chinese medicine as well as the prevention and treatment strategy of chronic atrophic gastritis of the "treating the disease before it gets worse" theory. It also describes in detail how the theory of "treating the future disease" guides its prevention and treatment strategies. The prospect of the theory of "treating the disease before it is diagnosed" in the treatment of CAG with damp-heat spleen and stomach is also discussed, which will provide new ideas and methods for the clinical treatment of spleen-stomach-damp-heat chronic atrophic gastritis.
