Abstract:Abstract Despite outstanding accomplishments in catalyst discovery, finding new, more efficient, environmentally neutral, and noble metal-free catalysts remains challenging and unsolved. Recently, complex solid solutions consisting of at least five different elements and often named as high-entropy alloys have emerged as a new class of electrocatalysts for a variety of reactions. The multicomponent combinations of elements facilitate tuning of active sites and catalytic properties. Predicting optimal catalyst composition remains difficult, making testing of a very high number of them indispensable. We present the high-throughput screening of the electrochemical activity of thin film material libraries prepared by combinatorial co-sputtering of metals which are commonly used in catalysis (Pd, Cu, Ni) combined with metals which are not commonly used in catalysis (Ti, Hf, Zr). Introducing unusual elements in the search space allows discovery of catalytic activity for hitherto unknown compositions. Material libraries with very similar composition spreads can show different activities vs. composition trends for different reactions. In order to address the inherent challenge of the huge combinatorial material space and the inability to predict active electrocatalyst compositions, we developed a high-throughput process based on co-sputtered material libraries, and performed high-throughput characterization using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning transmission electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and conductivity measurements followed by electrochemical screening by means of a scanning droplet cell. The results show surprising material compositions with increased activity for the oxygen reduction reaction and the hydrogen evolution reaction. Such data are important input data for future data-driven materials prediction.

Abstract:The last decade has seen a remarkable interest in Deep Eutectic Solvents ( DESs ), usually obtained from biorenewable, cheap and non-toxic precursors, as effective environmentally responsible reaction media for transition-metal-catalyzed organic transformations. One of the main advantages associated with the use of these neoteric solvents is the ease of recyclability of both the catalytic system under study and the eutectic mixture, which paves the way for their implementation in heterogeneous catalysis. In this Current Opinion , a discussion is offered to highlight recent studies published, in particular since 2018, in which transition-metal-based nanoparticles have been efficiently coupled with DESs in the following synthetic protocols: i ) C–C and C–X (X = N, O, S) coupling reactions; ii ) oxidation/reduction processes; iii ) synthesis of heterocycles/cycloisomerizations; and iv ) polymerization reactions.

Abstract:Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here, we report that metal nanoparticles can be prepared and used in a surface-exposed state that renders them inherently catalytically active. This strategy is realised by spatial confinement and electronic stabilisation with a dual-module mesoporous and microporous three-dimensional π-network in which surface-exposed nanoparticles are crystallised upon in situ reduction. The uncovered palladium nanoparticles serve as heterogeneous catalysts that are exceptionally active in water, catalyse unreactive aryl chlorides for straightforward carbon-carbon bond formation and are stable for repeated use in various types of cross couplings. Therefore, our results open new perspectives in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:This perspective article is based on a plenary lecture delivered by the author at Europacat 2023 in Prague on 29th August in recognition of the Boudart Award of EFCATS in 2021. The article charts the journey taken by the author in the discovery and application of gold catalysts over the preceding 40 years of research. Five topics are discussed. The first three parts describe three facets of monometallic gold catalysts. (1) CO oxidation and the hierarchy of activity of gold species supported on a reducible oxide Fe2O3; (2) acetylene hydrochlorination for the manufacture of vinyl chloride monomer using highly dispersed gold cations supported on carbon; (3) methane oxidation using molecular oxygen with gold nanoparticles dispersed on the zeolite H-ZSM-5. These first three parts emphasise that the active species of a gold catalyst is dependent on the reaction being catalysed and it is not a one size fits all for this catalysis. The final two parts concern gold palladium bimetallic catalysts. (4) alcohol oxidation and the new Cooperative Redox Enhancement effect (CORE); and (5) the use of in situ generation of hydrogen peroxide to enable new oxidative cascade processes. These examples demonstrate the rich tapestry that catalysis by gold can provide to the catalysis community globally, both from an academic and an industrial perspective as well as the societal impact that has been achieved by the commercialisation of gold catalysts.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials of diverse architecture are ubiquitous in industrial catalysis. They offer exciting prospects to tackle various sustainability challenges faced by society. Since the introduction of the concept a century ago, researchers aspire to control the chemical identity, local environment and electronic properties of active sites on catalytic surfaces to optimize their reactivity in given applications. Nowadays, numerous strategies exist to tailor these characteristics with varying levels of atomic precision. Making headway relies upon the existence of analytical approaches able to resolve relevant structural features and remains challenging due to the inherent complexity even of the simplest heterogeneous catalysts, and to dynamic effects often occurring under reaction conditions. Computational methods play a complementary and ever-increasing role in pushing forward the design. Here, we examine how nanoscale engineering can enhance the selectivity and stability of catalysts. We highlight breakthroughs towards their commercialization and identify directions to guide future research and innovation.

Abstract:<span>The large and vivid field of intermetallic compounds in catalysis is reviewed to identify necessities, strategies and new developments making use of the advantageous catalytic properties of intermetallic compounds. Since recent reviews summarizing contributions in heterogeneous catalysis as well as electrocatalysis are available, this contribution is not aiming at a comprehensive literature review.To introduce the field, first the interesting nature of intermetallic compounds is elaborated – including possibilities as well as requirements to address catalytic questions. Subsequently, this review focuses on exciting developments and example success stories of intermetallic compounds in catalysis. Since many of these are based on recent advances in synthesis, a short overview of synthesis and characterisation is included. Thus, this contribution aims to be an introduction to the newcomer as well as being helpful to the experienced researcher by summarising the different approaches. Selected examples from literature are chosen to illustrate the versatility of intermetallic compounds in heterogeneous catalysis where the emphasis is on developments since the last comprehensive review in the field.The vivid field of intermetallic compounds is regarded from a birds-eye perspective – including addressing catalytic challenges, high-performance materials and synthesis.</span>

Abstract:Noble metals, which form a significant proportion of catalysts at present, are not sustainable, which necessitates the need for non-noble metal alternatives. This report contains a thorough analysis of data obtained from the CAS Content CollectionTM, pertaining to the recent development of non-noble metal catalysts, their usage, and applications. We herein identify the research trends since 2012 in four subfields: electrocatalysts, homogeneous catalysts, photocatalysts, and biocatalysts. Within the subfields, we present: the most reported catalysts; emerging catalyst substances; significant reactions, and applications; map of the cooccurrence of catalyst substances with their reactions and applications. With this article, we aim to provide a data driven overview of the complex publication landscape and unique scientific insights for a deeper understanding of the field.

Abstract:Understanding the behaviour of active catalyst sites at the atomic level is crucial for optimizing catalytic performance. Here, the evolution of Pt and Cu dopants in Au 25 clusters on CeO 2 supports is investigated in the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction, using operando XAFS and DRIFTS. Different behaviour is observed for the Cu and Pt dopants during the pretreatment and reaction. The Cu migrates and builds clusters on the support, whereas the Pt creates single-atom active sites on the surface of the cluster, leading to better performance. Doping with both metals induces strong interactions and pretreatment and reaction conditions lead to the growth of the Au clusters, thereby affecting their catalytic behaviour. This highlights importance of understanding the behaviour of atoms at different stages of catalyst evolution. These insights into the atomic dynamics at the different stages are crucial for the precise optimisation of catalysts, which ultimately enables improved catalytic performance.

Abstract:This volume discusses the great potential of metal nanoparticle catalysts for complicated molecular synthesis and reviews the current progress of this field. The development of highly active and stable heterogeneous catalysts is a crucial subject in modern science. However, development of heterogeneous catalysts for fine chemical synthesis has lagged far behind those for bulk chemical process. In recent years metal nanoparticle catalysts have been of great interest in this area due to their unique activity, ease of heterogenization, and robustness. Therefore, metal nanoparticle catalysts are an excellent candidate for the above-mentioned active and robust heterogeneous catalysts and this book provides an overview of this area. The present volume summarizes recent progress on nanoparticle catalysis for various organic transformations from simple redox reactions to complex asymmetric C–C bond forming reactions and also presents seminal studies on new technologies. It comprehensively summarizes advances in metal nanoparticle catalysis across several aspects including reaction manners, mechanistic investigations and new synthetic methodologies to encourage the use of metal nanoparticle catalysts for future organic synthesis. Abstract:Fundamental investigations of catalyst nanoparticles Heterogeneous catalysis, the conversion of chemicals by the use of a suitable solid state catalyst, is a very important technology in modern society and it is involved in the production of up to 90% of all chemicals. Catalysis has in this way played a significant role in the technological and economic development in the 20th century. There is however a downside to this development and we are seeing significant pollution and pressure on resources. Catalysis therefore has an increasingly important role in limiting pollution and optimizing the use of resources. This development will depend on our fundamental understanding of catalytic processes and our ability to make use of that understanding. This thesis presents fundamental studies of catalyst nanoparticles with particular focus on dynamic processes. Such studies often require atomic-scale characterization, because the catalytic conversion takes place on the molecular and atomic level. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has the ability to image nanostructures with atomic resolution and reveal the atomic configuration of the important nanoparticle surfaces. In the present work, TEM has been used to study nanoparticles in situ at elevated temperature and with gas present in the microscope in order to recreate the conditions found in a chemical reactor. This is very important because we know that particles may change shape as their surfaces respond to a changing gas atmosphere. To obtain quantitative and credible information in situ, it is very important that we only study intrinsic structures and phenomena and not those that may be induced by the high energy electrons used to image the specimen. This requires careful consideration of the influence of the electron beam in order to understand, control and minimize that influence. I present four different topics, each related to different aspects of nanoparticle dynamics and catalysis. The first topic is the reduction of a homogeneous solid state precursor to form the catalytically active phase which is metal nanoparticles on an inert support. Here, we have reduced Cu phyllosilicate to Cu on silica and imaged the process in situ. The data obtained established the foundation for modeling work which revealed that the reduction proceeded by an autocatalytic route. Here, the initial nucleation of Cu is slow and the subsequent growth in size is fast because the Cu particles themselves catalyze further reduction. The second topic treated the active state of a methanol synthesis catalyst. This work was performed by a parallel approach, where we investigated identically created nanoparticles both with TEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The methanol synthesis catalyst is a complex high surface area Cu=ZnO=Al2O3 structure that is difficult to study by TEM. We therefore created size-selected CuZn alloy nanoparticles that were transformed by oxidation and reduction into Cu nanoparticles decorated with ZnO. This represents a simplified model system for the high surface area catalyst. The interplay between Cu and ZnO and the exact role of ZnO as a promoter for catalytic activity is not yet fully understood. Our work revealed that the surface of the reduced catalyst consists mainly of Cu decorated with well defined ZnO crystals. It was demonstrated by XPS that a fraction of the ZnO is reduced simultaneously with the Cu under H2 atmosphere, presumably forming a surface alloy in the Cu. The third topic studied the sintering of Cu nanoparticles supported on silica. Sintering is the main deactivation mechanism for the methanol synthesis catalyst and so this topic is of great interest to the development of better catalysts. It was found that sintering proceeded via Ostwald ripening, i. e. the migration of atomic species between particles, with a net flow from small to larger particles resulting in an overall growth in particle size. The presence of CO increased the rate of sintering significantly and the presence of H2O slowed it down. The fourth topic investigated the oxidation of CO on a Pt catalyst in the special case where the reaction displays temporal rate oscillations under fixed conditions. This is a well-known phenomenon, but the mechanism driving the oscillations on nanoparticles has hitherto been unknown. We used nanoreactor technology which allows for simultaneous TEM imaging and activity measurement, also referred to as an Operando experiment. With this we revealed that the shape of the Pt nanoparticles changed in phase with changes in global reaction rate. By the use of reactor modeling it was possible to show that the oscillations were possible due to the coupling between the self-poisoning nature of the CO oxidation reaction on Pt and gas flow and diffusion in the reactor. Our work showed that shape changes can drive global rate oscillations.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) powered by renewable energy is an attractive sustainable approach to mitigate CO2 emissions and to produce fuels or value-added chemicals. In order to tackle the challenges related to selectivity, activity, overpotential and durability, transition metal-based catalysts have been widely investigated in the last decades. In an effort to bridge the gap between the fields of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, this review aims to survey the main strategies explored for the rational design of a wide variety of different metal catalysts, ranging from molecular systems to single-atom and nanostructured catalysts. Transition metal complexes containing heme and non-heme ligands have been selected to discuss the recent advances in the understanding of the structure-function relationship in molecular homogeneous catalysis as well as to summarize the main approaches proposed for the heterogenization or confinement of molecular catalysts on conductive surfaces. The main strategies to minimize catalyst cost are also presented, leading to atomically dispersed molecular-like M-Nx moieties embedded on 2D conducting materials. The superior performances of single-atom catalysts (SACs) and the structural similarity with their molecular analogs, suggest that transition metal catalysts containing well-defined sites may be intrinsically more active and selective towards CO2 conversion than the bulk heterogeneous materials. Finally, design approaches for metal nanoparticles (NPs) based on size, shape, and support tuning are summarized and compared to novel strategies based on the interaction with surface-bonded organic molecules. The studies herein presented show that the basic principles in molecular catalysis and organometallic chemistry can be effectively used to design new efficient and selective heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 reduction.
