Abstract:The methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation is the most promising research direction in the utilization of CO2 ,in which the research of catalysts is the key point.This review focuses on the copper-based catalysts and summarizes the effect factors including copper dispersion,copper particle diameter and the interaction between metal copper and support on the activity,methanol selectivity and stability of copper-based catalyst.The preparation methods have huge influences on the copper dispersion,copper particle diameter and the interaction between metal copper and support which could then affect the catalytic performance.Developments based on the co-precipitation are the research trend of catalysts preparation in nowadays.Improving copper dispersion,decreasing copper particle diameter and increasing interaction between metal copper and support have different effects on the catalytic performance of this reaction.This review of the researches above provides the references for the development of high activity, high methanol selectivity and good stability new catalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogenation reactions play a critical role in the synthesis of value‐added products within the chemical industry. Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) using water as the hydrogen source has emerged as an alternative to conventional thermocatalytic processes for sustainable and decentralized chemical synthesis under mild conditions. Among various ECH catalysts, copper‐based (Cu‐based) nanomaterials are promising candidates due to their earth‐abundance, unique electronic structure, versatility, and high activity/selectivity. Herein, recent advances in the application of Cu‐based catalysts in ECH reactions for the upgrading of valuable chemicals are systematically analyzed. The unique properties of Cu‐based catalysts in ECH are initially introduced, followed by the design strategies to enhance their activity and selectivity. Then, typical ECH reactions on Cu‐based catalysts are presented in detail, including carbon dioxide reduction for multicarbon generation, alkyne‐to‐alkene conversion, selective aldehyde conversion, ammonia production from nitrogen‐containing substances, and amine production from organic nitrogen compounds. In these catalysts, we focus on the role of catalyst composition and nanostructures toward different products. The co‐hydrogenation of two substrates (e.g., CO2 and NOxn, CO2 and SO32–, etc.) via C–N, C–S, and C–C cross‐coupling reactions are also highlighted. Finally, the critical issues and future perspectives of Cu‐catalyzed ECH are proposed to accelerate the rational development of next‐generation catalysts. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:A novel and practical strategy of preparing mixed oxides/monolithic catalysts for exhaust gas purification is presented in this work. Highly active nano-CuCe catalyst dispersion liquid is synthesized through solvothermal method, and then various CuCe monolithic catalysts are prepared just by a simple spraying method. The as-prepared catalysts showed excellent activity and stability for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) destruction, which can be attributed to the good structural and chemical properties of the well-dispersed CuCe active species on the carrier surface. This strategy provides a very facile and flexible way for preparation of monolithic catalysts with versatile shapes to accommodate VOCs combustion facilities. It shows great potential in practical applications.

Abstract:The present invention provides a micro-nano structure copper-based catalyst and a preparation method and application thereof, and the micro-nano structure copper-based catalyst comprises the following components by weight: 5%-40% of CuO, 2.5%-20 % of ZnO and 40%-92.5% of Al2O3. The micro-nano structure copper-based catalyst has the advantages of uniform particle size distribution, large specific surface area, strong mechanical properties, smaller copper particle size, high active ingredient copper content and high dispersion, high activity in CO2 hydrogenation operation, good stability, low cost, simple preparation, easy industrial expanding, and the like.

Abstract:The ever-increasing demand for efficient and sustainable catalytic systems has prompted a surge in the exploration of transition metal nanoparticles as catalysts for various chemical reactions. Among these, copper-based nanoparticles have emerged as promising contenders, offering a viable alternative to the traditionally employed palladium catalysts. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the catalytic application of copper-based nanoparticles in coupling reactions, with a focus on their synthesis methods, structural characterization, and catalytic performance. The synthesis of copper-based nanoparticles is discussed in detail, encompassing a range of techniques including wet chemical technique, reverse micelle, biosynthesis, microwave and solgel methods. Emphasis is placed on tailoring the size, shape, and surface properties of these synthesized nanoparticles. Furthermore, the catalytic activity is detailed and summarized by focusing on the coupling reactions. The comprehensive insights provided herein serve as a valuable resource for researchers engaged in the development of efficient and eco-friendly catalytic processes.

Abstract:One-step spray flame synthesis,on the basis stagnation swirl burner,is developed to synthesize low-cost Cu-based catalysts.When preparing the solution,copper nitrate trihydrate and ethyl alcohol are used as precursor and solvent,respectively.BET and XRD analyses are adopted to characterize the catalysts,and then the catalytic activity of methane oxidation is determined by a lab-scale fixed-bed micro-reactor.The TEM results indicate that the copper oxide nanoparticles prepared with the ethyl alcohol solvent exhibit ultrafine diameter and good crystallinity,which are more suitable for the catalytic oxidation.Finally,10 nm CuO particles show good catalytic performance for methane,however the catalytic performance decreases after doping with alumina.It can be explained that the effective ratio of copper oxide declines because of the shingling effects caused by alumina.

Abstract:Syngas conversion serves as a gas-to-liquid technology to produce liquid fuels and valuable chemicals from coal, natural gas, or biomass. During syngas conversion, sintering is known to deactivate the catalyst owing to the loss of active surface area. However, the growth of nanoparticles might induce the formation of new active sites such as grain boundaries (GBs) which perform differently from the original nanoparticles. Herein, we reported a unique Cu-based catalyst, Cu nanoparticles with in-situ generated GBs confined in zeolite Y (denoted as activated Cu/Y), which exhibited a high selectivity for C5+ hydrocarbons (65.3 C%) during syngas conversion. Such high selectivity for long-chain products distinguished activated Cu/Y from typical copper-based catalysts which mainly catalyze methanol synthesis. This unique performance was attributed to the GBs, while the zeolite assisted the stabilization through spatial confinement. Specifically, the GBs enabled H-assisted dissociation of CO and subsequent hydrogenation into CHx*. CHx* species not only serve as the initiator but also directly polymerize on Cu GBs, known as the carbide mechanism. Meanwhile, the synergy of GBs and their vicinal low-index facets led to the CO insertion where non-dissociative adsorbed CO on low-index facets migrated to GBs and inserted into the metal-alkyl bond for the chain growth.

Abstract:The metal–support interactions between Cu single atoms and different carriers and their contribution to the catalytic process are briefly discussed. Thereafter, the effects of some modification methods on the structure and properties of copper single‐atom catalysts (Cu SACs) are highlighted. Finally, the applications of Cu SACs in energy conversion and environmental purification are also emphasized. Future renewable energy supply and green, sustainable environmental development rely on various types of catalytic reactions. Copper single‐atom catalysts (Cu SACs) are attractive due to their distinctive electronic structure (3d orbitals are not filled with valence electrons), high atomic utilization, and excellent catalytic performance and selectivity. Despite numerous optimization studies are conducted on Cu SACs in terms of energy conversion and environmental purification, the coupling among Cu atoms–support interactions, active sites, and catalytic performance remains unclear, and a systematic review of Cu SACs is lacking. To this end, this work summarizes the recent advances of Cu SACs. The synthesis strategies of Cu SACs, metal–support interactions between Cu single atoms and different supports, modification methods including modification for carriers, coordination environment regulating, site distance effect utilizing, and dual metal active center catalysts constructing, as well as their applications in energy conversion and environmental purification are emphatically introduced. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for the future Cu SACs development are discussed. This review aims to provide insight into Cu SACs and a reference for their optimal design and wide application.

Abstract:Developing highly active and durable platinum-based catalysts is crucial for electrochemical renewable energy conversion technologies but the limited supply and high cost of platinum have hindered their widespread implementation. The incorporation of non-noble metals, particularly copper, into Pt catalysts has been demonstrated as an effective solution to reduce Pt consumption while further promoting their performance, making them promising for various electrocatalytic reactions. This review summarizes the latest advances in PtCu-based alloy catalysts over the past several years from both synthetic and applied perspectives. In the synthesis section, the selection of support and reagents, synthesis routes, as well as post-treatment methods at high temperatures are reviewed. The application section focuses not only on newly proposed electrochemical reactions such as nitrogen-related reactions and O2 reduction but also extends to device-level applications. The discussion in this review aims to provide further insights and guidance for the development of PtCu electrocatalysts for practical applications.

Abstract:Copper catalysis plays a crucial role in organic synthesis providing a wide spectrum of important transformations over decades. Success in homogeneous copper catalysis has often relied on the appropriate modulation of coordinating ligands, whereas the development of the corresponding heterogeneous variant has relatively gained less attentions. In this review, we aim to deliver a comprehensive summary of a number of seminal heterogenized Cu-catalyzed homogenous catalysis reported over the last decade. The scope of this review is classified by the type of transformations in which the catalyst’s preparation and activity including the relationship between structure and activity are underscored. In this way, this review highlights the potential and synthetic perspectives of heterogeneous copper catalysis in both academic and industry.

Abstract:In recent decades, catalytic reduction of CO2 is a hot topic in the research field of electrocatalysis. Copper is the only metal catalyst capable of producing multiple carbon (C2+) products in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (ECR), however, there are still many challenges such as low selectivity, serious hydrogen evolution (HER) and poor stability. So far, various synthesis methods have been developed for Cu-based catalysts. Compared with ordinary chemical synthesis, electrochemical method has the advantages of simple process, controllable conditions, good safety and eco-friendly. In this review, the recent progress in synthesizing different types of Cu-based catalysts by means of the electrochemical method are comprehensively reviewed. The engineering strategies and the effects of the key preparation conditions on the catalytic performance of CO2 electroreduction for C2+ products are discussed in details. Besides, copper-based catalysts synthesized by electrochemical methods combined with the ordinary methods (wet chemical methods, plasma activated methods and other methods) were also outlined. Finally, the development potential of electrochemical synthesis for Cu-based catalysts are recommended, which provides a direction for the future development of Cu-based catalysts with low cost and high ECR performance.

Abstract:Copper-based catalysts exhibit high activity in electrochemical CO2 conversion to value-added chemicals. However, achieving precise control over catalysts design to generate narrowly distributed products remains challenging. Herein, a gallium (Ga) liquid metal-based approach is employed to synthesize hierarchical nanoporous copper (HNP Cu) catalysts with tailored ligament/pore and crystallite sizes. The nanoporosity and polycrystallinity are generated by dealloying intermetallic CuGa2 formed after immersing pristine Cu foil in liquid Ga in a basic or acidic solution. The liquid metal-based approach allows for the transformation of monocrystalline Cu to the polycrystalline HNP Cu with enhanced CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) performance. The dealloyed HNP Cu catalyst with suitable crystallite size (22.8 nm) and nanoporous structure (ligament/pore size of 45 nm) exhibits a high Faradaic efficiency of 91% toward formate production under an applied potential as low as -0.3 VRHE. The superior CO2RR performance can be ascribed to the enlarged electrochemical catalytic surface area, the generation of preferred Cu facets, and the rich grain boundaries by polycrystallinity. This work demonstrates the potential of liquid metal-based synthesis for improving catalysts performance based on structural design, without increasing compositional complexity.

Abstract:The development of new catalyst materials for energy-efficient chemical synthesis is critical as over 80% of industrial processes rely on catalysts, with many of the most energy-intensive processes specifically using heterogeneous catalysis. Catalytic performance is a complex interplay of phenomena involving temperature, pressure, gas composition, surface composition, and structure over multiple length and time scales. In response to this complexity, the integrated approach to heterogeneous dilute alloy catalysis reviewed here brings together materials synthesis, mechanistic surface chemistry, reaction kinetics, in situ and operando characterization, and theoretical calculations in a coordinated effort to develop design principles to predict and improve catalytic selectivity. Dilute alloy catalysts-in which isolated atoms or small ensembles of the minority metal on the host metal lead to enhanced reactivity while retaining selectivity-are particularly promising as selective catalysts. Several dilute alloy materials using Au, Ag, and Cu as the majority host element, including more recently introduced support-free nanoporous metals and oxide-supported nanoparticle "raspberry colloid templated (RCT)" materials, are reviewed for selective oxidation and hydrogenation reactions. Progress in understanding how such dilute alloy catalysts can be used to enhance selectivity of key synthetic reactions is reviewed, including quantitative scaling from model studies to catalytic conditions. The dynamic evolution of catalyst structure and composition studied in surface science and catalytic conditions and their relationship to catalytic function are also discussed, followed by advanced characterization and theoretical modeling that have been developed to determine the distribution of minority metal atoms at or near the surface. The integrated approach demonstrates the success of bridging the divide between fundamental knowledge and design of catalytic processes in complex catalytic systems, which can accelerate the development of new and efficient catalytic processes.

Abstract:Nonprecious transition metal copper-based catalysts have attracted immense research interest for several applications due to their cost-effectiveness. However, deactivation by agglomeration in high-temperature environments remains a pervasive challenge and limits their uses. Here, we show the controllable dispersion of ultrafine copper nanocomposites among the linear polyimide by a strong CuOx/WOx (WCuOx) heterostructure coupling. The strong interaction triggered by coupling-confinement confines the mobility of Cu species, preventing the agglomeration or the formation of large metal particles. Abundantly exposed catalytic sites with unique electronic structures optimized the adsorption activation of H2O and the reaction energy barrier. This study provides a novel and significant insight into the surface-confinement strategy and lays the foundation for the design of Cu-based catalyst site distribution.

Abstract:High active ligand usually plays an important role during catalysis and organic synthesis area. Unsymmetrical tridentate pyrazoly-pyridinyl-triazole ligand bridged copper composite supported on the ordered mesoporous material was synthesized from the designed ligand, simple copper salt and commercially available SBA-15. The resulting copper composite was fully characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy and X-ray power diffraction. Compared to traditional noble Ir, Ru, Rh and Pd complexes, this economical and stable heterogeneous copper revealed high catalytic selectivity for the reaction of hydronaphthalenones and alcohols with good recyclability. Mechanism explorations disclosed that oxidation, condensation and hydrogenation processes were all involved during this process and this provided an efficient method to the synthesis of 2-benzyl-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1( 2H )-onederivatives with good recyclability through the green borrowing hydrogen strategy.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction is a promising energy storage technology with a wide range of applications. During the CO2 reduction, it is important to modulate the adsorption energies for different intermediates on catalysts. To date, it’s still a challenge to precisely and effectively modulate this adsorption energy for achieving efficient CO2 reduction performance. Copper is the only metal catalyst that can convert CO2 into high-value and high-energy C2+ product among all catalysts. In this review, we summarize the development of copper-based catalysts in recent years, including introducing the CO2 electroreduction mechanism, and outlining the reaction pathways of different C2 products. Subsequently, we propose approaches for the preparation of catalysts capable of efficiently producing C2 products to achieve the required catalytic performance from the perspective of copper-based catalyst synthesis. Then, we deeply analyze changes for the catalyst in CO2RR by in situ monitoring tools. Finally, we present the challenges of copper-based catalysts and our views on the development of copper-based catalysts in the future.

By immobilizing copper onto cysteine-modified, polydopamine-coated magnetite particles, this advanced catalytic platform exhibits exceptional stability and catalytic activity. Chemical modification of the polydopamine (PDA) surface with cysteine enhances copper salt immobilization, leading to the formation of the Fe3O4@PDA-Cys@Cu platform. This system was evaluated in palladium-free, copper-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling reactions, effectively catalyzing the coupling of terminal acetylenes with aryl halides. Additionally, the Fe3O4@PDA-Cys@Cu platform was employed in click reactions, confirming the enhanced catalytic efficiency due to increased copper content. The reusability of the platform was further investigated, demonstrating improved performance, especially in recyclability tests in click reaction, making it a promising candidate for sustainable heterogeneous catalysis.
