Abstract:Searching for highly efficient and robust CO2 adsorbents is very important for CO2 capture, utilization, and storage. In this study, new polyethylenimine-grafted metal-organic framework (MOF)-polymer composites, abbreviated as PEI@PGD-H, were synthesized via high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) template polymerization of divinylbenzene and glycidyl methacrylate, followed by in situ generation of HKUST-type MOF in the presence of hydrophobic-modified CuO nanoparticles via the reaction of CuO with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid and then polyethylenimine (PEI) functionalization via epoxy-amine reaction and amine-metal sites interaction. The coexistence of the hierarchical interconnected porous skeleton of poly(glycidyl methacrylate-divinylbenzene) (PGD), high specific surface area of MOF, and chemical CO2 adsorption of PEI endows PEI@PGD-H with high CO2 adsorption capacity, rate, and selectivity. PEI7O@PGD-H shows a CO2/N-2 separation factor as high as 76 and CO2 adsorption capacities of 4.3, 3.0, and 1.8 mmol of CO2/g from pure CO2, simulated flue gas, and air, respectively. After 20 CO2 adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorbent still retained a high and stable CO2 capture capacity over 2.8 mmol of CO2/g for simulated flue gas. The adsorbent also displays reasonably good thermal stability, excellent water endurance, low desorption energy, and easy shaping. The desorption heat is as low as 48 kJ/mol of CO2. These features make PEI@PGD-H highly efficient, robust, and low-energy CO2 adsorbents for practical application in CO2 capture.
Polyethyleneimine-Modified UiO-66-NH2(Zr) Metal–Organic Frameworks: Preparation and Enhanced CO2 Selective Adsorption

Abstract:UiO-66-NH2, a zirconium-based functional metal–organic framework (MOF), was postsynthetically modified via Schiff base reaction between aldehyde groups in glutaraldehyde and amino groups in UiO-66-NH2 and CO2-preabsorbed polyethyleneimine (PEI). The resulting PEI-modified MOFs, abbreviated as PEIC@UiO, were characterized with 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared, powder X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis and evaluated as CO2 adsorbents. In comparison with pristine UiO-66-NH2, the PEIC@UiO adsorbents have reduced specific surface area (7–150 m2/g) but maintained the same crystal structure. Particularly, the PEIC96@UiO adsorbent exhibited significantly improved CO2/N2 adsorption selectivity (48 vs 25) and higher CO2 adsorption capacity (3.2 vs 2.7 mmol/g). The adsorbent also displayed moderate desorption energy (68 kJ/mol CO2), superior moisture endurance, and recyclability, which are very desirable for practical applications.
Carbon Dioxide Capture with Polyethylenimine-Functionalized Industrial-Grade Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Industrial grade multiwalled carbon nanotubes (IG-MWCNTs) were functionalized with polyethylenimines (PEIs) for CO2 capture from simulated flue gas. Ethylenediamine end-capped PEI (PEI-EC) impregnated IG-MWCNTs was found to exhibit a significantly higher adsorption capacity than other branched PEIs impregnated IG-MWCNTs. The PEI-EC impregnated IG-MWCNTs were characterized with various experimental methods including N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. The CO2 adsorption behavior of the PEI-EC impregnated IG-MWCNTs is influenced by PEI loading and adsorption temperature. The PEI-EC impregnated IG-MWCNTs exhibit a CO2 adsorption capacity as high as 2.538 mmol/g at 343 K, and can be completely regenerated higher than 403 K. The CO2 adsorption/desorption kinetics of the PEI-EC impregnated IG-MWCNTs was investigated with Avramis fractional order kinetic model. The activation energy of the CO2 adsorption/desorption was calculated from Arrhenius equation and used to evaluate the performance of the adsorbent.
Self-Assembled Core-Shell Structure MgO@TiO2 as a K2CO3 Support with Superior Performance for Direct Air Capture CO2

Abstract:Traditional carbon capture and storage technologies for large point sources can at best slow the rate of increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. In contrast, direct capture of CO2 from ambient air, or "direct air capture" (DAC), offers the potential to become a truly carbon-negative technology. Composite solid adsorbents fabricated by impregnating a porous matrix with K2CO3 are promising adsorbents for the adsorption capture of CO2 from ambient air. Nevertheless, the adsorbent can be rapidly deactivated during continuous adsorption/desorption cycles. In this study, MgO-supported, TiO2-stabilized MgO@TiO2 core-shell structures were prepared as supports using a novel self-assembled (SA) method and then impregnated with 50 wt % K2CO3 (K2CO3/MgO@TiO2, denoted as SA-KM@T). The adsorbent exhibits a high CO2 capture capacity of ∼126.6 mg CO2/g sorbent in direct air adsorption and maintained a performance of 20 adsorption/desorption cycles at 300 °C mid-temperature, which was much better than that of K2CO3/MgO. Analysis proved that the core-shell structure of the support effectively inhibited the reaction between the active component (K2CO3) and the main support (MgO) by the addition of TiO2, resulting in higher reactivity, thermal stability, and antiagglomeration properties. This work provides an alternative strategy for DAC applications using adsorbents.

Abstract:In this paper, protonated titanate nanotubes (PTNTs) were modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) by wet impregnation method for CO2 adsorption. Their micro-morphology and structural properties were characterized by a range of analytical techniques, including XRD, TEM, SEM, N2 adsorption etc. Experimental results revealed that the functionalized PTNTs with 50wt.% PEI loaded exhibited a high CO2 adsorption capacity of 130.8mg/g-sorbent at 100°C. Only a minor loss of its capacity was observed after five consecutive adsorption–desorption runs. The PEI was existed both in the internal and external mesoporous pores of PTNTs via chemical combination between amino group and enriched protons, which accounted for their good thermal stability at elevated temperatures. The results present herein imply that the PEI modified PTNTs could be appealing materials for capturing CO2 from power plant flue gas.
Adsorptive Removal of Carbon Dioxide Using Polyethyleneimine Supported on Propanesulfonic-Acid-Functionalized Mesoporous SBA-15

Abstract:One-step synthesized sulfonic-acid-functionalized SBA-15 (denoted as alpha SSBA-15) impregnated with polyethyleneimine (PEI) was used for CO2 capture in this study. The resulted sorbents were characterized via a range of analytical techniques, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Si-29 magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG DSC), etc. Experimental results showed that the incorporation of propanesulfonic acid groups into the inner structure of the silica support had brought dramatic improvement in CO2 adsorption capacity, of which PEI/SSSBA-15 showed the highest CO2 adsorption amount. The main reason of this increased capacity could be attributed to the enhanced CO2 diffusion into bulk networks of PEI polymers because of its better dispersion in the pores of support, where the extended propanesulfonic acid groups on the inner surface could spatially disperse the subsequent loaded PEI molecules. Furthermore, the PEI/5SSBA-15 also exhibited superior stable cyclic adsorption/desorption performance compared to PEI/SBA-15, especially after 5 cycles. This was assumed because the enhanced surface acidity of PEI/5SSBA-15 anchored the NH2/NH groups through acid-base interaction, reducing the loss of active sites.
Polyethyleneimine-Nano Silica Composites: A Low-Cost And Promising Adsorbent For Co2 Capture

Abstract:Adsorbents for CO2 captured with nano silica as support were synthesized by impregnating polyethyleneimine (PEI) into nano silica. For impregnation of PEI into nano silica, the 2-40 nm pore of silica support plays an important role in the synthesis process of adsorbents. The PEI loading content, adsorption temperature and CO2 partial pressure influenced CO2 adsorption capacity and PEI utilization efficiency. At 105 degrees C and under 1 atm CO2 partial pressure, the adsorbent with 60% PEI loading content obtained a CO2 adsorption capacity of 186 mg g(-1) adsorbent and a PEI utilization efficiency of 304 mg g(-1) PEI. The CO2 cycling adsorption-desorption was tested under the condition as follows: adsorption at 90 or 105 degrees C under pure CO(2)and desorption at 120 degrees C under pure N-2 showed relatively good adsorption-desorption stability, and no evident deactivation of amines was observed under this condition. However, for adsorption at 90 or 105 degrees C under pure CO2 and desorption at 135 or 150 degrees C under pure CO2, evident deactivation of amines occurred, and the formation of linear or cyclic urea is one reason which led to the decrease of CO2 adsorption capacity.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional (3-D) interconnected elastic scaffold with high thermal conductivity was prepared from hydroxylated graphene (HG) and hydroxylated carbon nanotubes (HCNTs). Then, polyethyleneimine (PEI) was uniformly covalently grafted to the surfaces of the scaffold, to give a HG-HCNTs-PEI nanocomposite as a superior CO2 adsorbent. The resulting nanocomposites possess high amine loading (9.46 mmol N g-1) and high adsorption capacity in simulated flue gas (up to 4.43 mmol CO2 g-1). Due to the excellent thermal conductivity (5.1 W/mK), the adsorbents exhibit superior cyclic stability even in harsh desorption temperature (135 ºC), Thus, these carbonaceous materials-supported adsorbents make the CO2 capture process practical and promising.

Abstract:Hybrid macroporous adsorbent was synthesized for CO2 capture, where polyethylenimine (PEI)-enveloped titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO2) as well as Span 80 act as a co-emulsifier in the preparation of styrene/divinylbenzene high internal phase emulsion (HIPE). By means of interfacial control in one-step polymerization, the terminals of most PEI chains were embedded into the polymer matrix, and the PEIenveloped nano-TiO2 particles were uniformly dispersed on the surface of macropores to form a nanoscale roughness. Compared with the conventionally impregnated PEI in PolyHIPE, more amine groups in the hybrid polyHIPE are exposed to CO2 molecules, and the leaching and volatilization of PEI have been effectively prevented through the embedding technology, resulting in high adsorption capacity, rapid adsorption/desorption rates, and long-cycle stability in a wide temperature range. On the other hand, the particleformulated inorganic framework fascinates stress-strain strength and thermal conductivity to accomplish two important prerequisites for industrial application.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional carbide MXenes (Ti 3 C 2 T x and V 2 CT x ) were prepared by exfoliating MAX phases (Ti 3 AlC 2 and V 2 AlC) powders in the solution of sodium fluoride (NaF) and hydrochloric acid (HCl). The specific surface area (SSA) of as-prepared Ti 3 C 2 T x was 21 m 2 /g, and that of V 2 CT x was 9 m 2 /g. After intercalation with dimethylsulfoxide, the SSA of Ti 3 C 2 T x was increased to 66 m 2 /g; that of V 2 CT x was increased to 19 m 2 /g. Their adsorption properties on carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) were investigated under 0–4 MPa at room temperature (298 K). Intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x had the adsorption capacity of 5.79 mmol/g, which is close to the capacity of many common sorbents. The theoretical capacity of Ti 3 C 2 T x with the SSA of 496 m 2 /g was up to 44.2 mmol/g. Additionally, due to high pack density, MXenes had very high volume-uptake capacity. The capacity of intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x measured in this paper was 502 V·v –1 . This value is already higher than volume capacity of most known sorbents. These results suggest that MXenes have some advantage features to be researched as novel CO 2 capture materials.

Abstract:Polyethylenimine (PEI) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO2) functionalized poly- HIPE beads were synthesized by suspension polymerization of styrene/divinylbenzene high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) containing PEI and nano-TiO2 particles in inner phase. The products are uniform and spherical beads with average diameter of 1 mm. Characterization results showed good thermal stability and desired mechanical strength. CO2 adsorption tests were performed with CO2/H2O/N2 (1 : 1 : 8) gas mixture. Nano-TiO2 particles distinctly improved the CO2 adsorption performance of the polyHIPE beads, resulting in enhanced CO2 adsorption capacity and fast adsorption/desorption kinetics. Besides, the functionalized polyHIPE beads exhibited remarkable cycle stability.

Abstract:Covalently tethered CO2 adsorbents are synthesized by acid catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of aziridine on the basal planes of three-dimensional hydroxylated graphene (HG). The resulting materials possess high surface areas, strong covalent bonds between polyethyleneimine (PEI) and graphene, and high thermal conductivity. The HG-PEI nanocomposites exhibit high amine loading (more than 10.03 mmol N g(-1)), high adsorption capacity (up to 4.13 mmol CO2 g(-1) in simulated ambient air under 1 atm of dry CO2) as well as good stability both at low (100 degrees C) and high desorption temperatures (135 degrees C), which allows the overall CO2 capture process to be promising and sustainable.
Tailoring Amine-Functionalized Ti-MOFs via a Mixed Ligands Strategy for High-Efficiency CO2 Capture

Abstract:Amine-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising strategy for the high-efficiency capture and separation of CO2. In this work, by tuning the ratio of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) to 5-aminoisophthalic acid (5-NH2-H2IPA), we designed and synthesized a series of amine-functionalized highly stable Ti-based MOFs (named MIP-207-NH2-n, in which n represents 15%, 25%, 50%, 60%, and 100%). The structural analysis shows that the original framework of MIP-207 in the MIP-207-NH2-n (n = 15%, 25%, and 50%) MOFs remains intact when the mole ratio of ligand H3BTC to 5-NH2-H2IPA is less than 1 to 1 in the resulting MOFs. By the introduction of amino groups, MIP-207-NH2-25% demonstrates outstanding CO2 capture performance up to 3.96 and 2.91 mmol g−1, 20.7% and 43.3% higher than those of unmodified MIP-207 at 0 and 25 °C, respectively. Furthermore, the breakthrough experiment indicates that the dynamic CO2 adsorption capacity and CO2/N2 separation factors of MIP-207-NH2-25% are increased by about 25% and 15%, respectively. This work provides an additional strategy to construct amine-functionalized MOFs with the maintenance of the original MOF structure and high performance of CO2 capture and separation.

Atom-level interaction design between amines and support for achieving efficient and stable CO2 capture

Abstract:Amine-functionalized adsorbents offer substantial potential for CO2 capture owing to their selectivity and diverse application scenarios. However, their effectiveness is hindered by low efficiency and unstable cyclic performance. Here we introduce an amine-support system designed to achieve efficient and stable CO2 capture. Through atom-level design, each polyethyleneimine (PEI) molecule is precisely impregnated into the cage-like pore of MIL-101(Cr), forming stable composites via strong coordination with unsaturated Cr acid sites within the crystal lattice. The resulting adsorbent demonstrates a low regeneration energy (39.6 kJ/molCO2), excellent cyclic stability (0.18% decay per cycle under dry CO2 regeneration), high CO2 adsorption capacity (4.0 mmol/g), and rapid adsorption kinetics (15 min for saturation at 30 °C). These properties stem from the unique electron-level interaction between the amine and the support, effectively preventing carbamate products' dehydration. This work presents a feasible and promising cost-effective and sustainable CO2 capture strategy.
Amine-impregnated natural inorganic nanotubes via layer-by-layer electrostatically self-assembly approach for efficient CO 2 adsorption

Abstract:Developing cost-effective and high-performance solid amine adsorbents has considered as an important way to alleviate the greenhouse effect. How to precisely regulate its pore structure and surface interface characteristics, and how to cooperate to optimize the dynamic mass transfer and adsorption–desorption behavior of gas in the adsorbent are still challenging work. Herein, we demonstrated a facile and efficient approach to construct polyethyleneimine (PEI) impregnated halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) as an emerging nanocomposite for CO 2 capture. Based on the natural electrostatic differences of inner and outer walls for HNTs, the hollow tubular structures of adsorbents were constructed by selective surface modification and layer-by-layer electrostatic self-assembly technology to improve the CO 2 uptake capacity and cyclic stability, in which poly(sodium- p -styrene sulfonate) (PSS) and PEI were used as polyanionic and polycationic layer, respectively, to coat the inner walls of HNTs. The loading capacity of PSS-PEI composite ionic layers in HNTs and the influence of PSS polyanionic layer on PEI dispersion were specifically discussed according to the CO 2 uptake capacity, adsorption heat, thermodynamics and kinetics of the adsorbents. The optimal PEI20-0.5PHNTs adsorbent exhibited a higher CO 2 uptake of 0.87 mmol/g at 80 °C in the flow of 40 vol% N 2 /60 vol% CO 2 than that of PEI20-HNTs, owing to the high amine efficiency due to the uniform dispersion of PEI in the electrostatic composite ionic layers. Furthermore, PEI20-0.5PHNTs reached 75 % of the maximum adsorption capacity at the 5th min of the adsorption process and released the most heat during adsorption at − 18.28 kJ/mol due to the presence of electrostatic composite ionic layers. PEI20-0.5PHNTs showed excellent cyclic stability with a slight loss of 7.4 %. The electrostatic self-assembled adsorbent obtained by layer-by-layer loading of PSS and PEI based on the unique surface charge characteristics of HNTs is an inspiration for the synthesis of cost-effective solid amine adsorbents for practical CO 2 capture and separation.

Abstract:Titanium-based adsorbents for CO2 capture were prepared through impregnating the as-synthesized TiO2 nanotubes (TiNT) with four kinds of amines, namely monoethanolamine (MEA), ethylenediamine (EDA), triethylenetetramine (TETA) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA). The resultant samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, low-temperature N2 adsorption as well as transmission electron microscopy. The absorption of CO2 was carried out in a dynamic packed column. The sample impregnated with TEPA showed a better adsorption capacity due to its higher amino groups content. In addition, CO2 adsorption capacity increases as the amount of amine loaded increases. Therefore, TiNT-TEPA-69 showed the highest CO2 adsorption capacity among the three samples impregnated with TETA; approximately 4.10 mmol/g at 30 degrees C. In addition, the dynamic adsorption/desorption performance was investigated. The adsorption capacity of TiNT-TEPA-69 dropped slightly (about 2%) during a total of five cycles. The TiNT-TEPA-69 adsorbent exhibited excellent CO2 adsorption/desorption performance.
Highly efficient, selective and reversible capture of sulfur dioxide by methylated-polyethylenimine supported on graphitic carbon nitride

Abstract:Supported polytertiary amine compounds have shown promising application in the capture of SO2 from industrial tail gas. In this work, we proposed to use graphic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as the support of methylated polyethylenimine (mPEI) for SO2 capture. g-C3N4 can not only be facilely synthesized from cheap reactants, but also accommodate large amount of mPEI owing to the presence of abundant flexible nanopores. A series of mPEI@g-C3N4 samples were thus prepared, characterized and investigated for SO2 capture performance. It is found that the SO2 capacities of mPEI@g-C3N4 samples are very impressive, with the values of 11.82 ~ 15.88 mmol/g at 25 °C and 1 bar, and 4.03 ~ 5.67 mmol/g at 25 °C and 0.002 bar. mPEI@g-C3N4 samples also have excellent ability for selective adsorption of SO2 from CO2 and N2, based on pure and mixed gas adsorption experiments. In addition, mPEI@g-C3N4 samples have good reversibility for SO2 adsorption, according to the repeated mixed gas adsorption experiments.

Abstract:Solid amine adsorbents are showing promise as effective adsorbents for the capture of CO 2 from various gas mixtures, including biogas and flue exhaust gas. In this study, we introduced a co-grafting strategy using 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE) on the surface of P(DVB-D). This approach aimed to exploit the reaction involving the opening of epoxy groups with amine groups, forming covalent bonds between polyethyleneimine (PEI) and mesoporous organic polymers, along with the introduction of hydroxy groups to enhance adsorbent long-term stability and antioxidation ability. After an extensive assessment, P(DVB-D)@B-41.2 %PEI exhibited a maximum CO 2 capture capacity of 4.53 mmol/g at 50 °C and 50 % RH. Notably, its remarkable CO 2 adsorption performance persisted across a diverse temperature spectrum (30–90 °C) and an extensive concentration span (5–30 % vol.). In contrast to conventional adsorbents prepared solely through impregnation methods, P(DVB-D)@B-41.2 %PEI exhibited impressive long-term stability throughout 50 successive cycles and excellent resistance to oxidative degradation. These findings underscore the considerable potential of P(DVB-D)@B-41.2 %PEI in the realm of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology.

M2C-type MXenes: Promising catalysts for CO2 capture and reduction

Abstract:Novel catalysts for carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction into specific energy-rich products with great activity and selectivity is highly desired, which is closely related to the adsorption ability of substrate with specific intermediates and/or products. In this work, via first principles calculations we have extensively studied the properties of two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes) for efficient CO2 capture and reduction. Our results suggest that all the investigated MXenes exhibit excellent CO2 capture abilities, which are demonstrated to be originated from the surface lone pair electrons of MXenes and can be described via the effective charge numbers of their transition metal atoms. Then we highlight that the activated CO2 can be selectively reduced to methane (CH4) with a moderate limiting step, where the Mo2C MXene exhibit higher catalytic efficiency than the other MXenes. Further analysis on transition states confirms that the largest energy demand during CO2 reduction happens on the surface regeneration of Mo2C MXene, which is critical to realize sustainable catalytic activity. The stability of Mo2C MXene has been confirmed via phonon dispersion and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Our findings pave the way of MXenes for CO2 capture and pioneer the application of Mo2C MXene as novel CO2 reduction catalyst.
