Abstract:The germination, seedling vigor, crop establishment and yield of agronomically important crops is negatively affected by soil salinity. The current study aimed to investigate the ability of exogenous fertigation by sodium nitroprusside (SNP) to induce salt tolerance in four high yielding wheat cultivars (Sahar-06, Punjab-11, Millat-11 and Galaxy-13) that differ in their response to salt stress in terms of biomass production, oxidative defense mechanisms and grain yield. Three levels of SNP (0, 0.1 and 0.2 mM) were used for seed soaking. During soaking the seeds were kept in the dark. After soaking for 12 h the seeds were air-dried for 5 h before sowing. Salinity caused a significant reduction in biomass and grain yield, while it increased proline (Pro), ascorbic acid (AsA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents. Cultivar Sahar-06 and Galaxy-13 were found more tolerant to salinity based on shoot length root fresh and dry wights, 100 grain weight, decreased MDA and H2O2 accumulation, phenolic and ascorbic acid (AsA) contents, accumulation of proline, activities of SOD, POD and CAT as compared to the other cultivars. Seed priming with SNP was effective in reducing the adverse effects of salt stress induced oxidative stress on plant biomass and grain yield in all the studied wheat cultivars, but maximum amelioration of salt stress tolerance by SNP treatment was found in cv. Sahar-06. The increased salt tolerance in wheat plants by SNP seed priming might be due to the role of NO in improving seed vigor and germination and early establishment of seedlings with better growth. 0.1 mM SNP was found the most effective in improving salt tolerance, as compared to other SNP concentations. Exogenous SNP fertigation increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) and the contents of AsA, Pro and total phenolics content (TPC) in the salt stressed wheat plants. Our data indicate that SNP-priming induced salt tolerance by up-regulating the antioxidative defense mechanisms resulting in better biomass production and grain yield.

Abstract:Wheat is a widely grown cereal crop that provides >20% daily protein intake and calories worldwide. Drought stress drastically affects the crucial physiological (relative water content; RWC), biochemical (proline content), and molecular attributes in wheat plants from germination to maturity stage and ultimately reduces the yield and quality traits. Given this, the present work was conducted to know the effect of salt seed priming on wheat crop. For this, we have used two wheat variety HUW-468 (V1), and HUW-510 (V2) primed with water (T2), Mg(NO3)2 (T3), ZnSO4 (T4), and combinations of Mg(NO3)2 and ZnSO4 salt (T5) with non-primed seed (T1) under water stress (W1) and control (W0) conditions. We have observed significant differences in plant height (84 to 90 cm), leaf number, total leaf area (431.82 to 505.46 cm2 plant−1), relative water content, chlorophyll content (4.78 to 5.86 mg g−1fresh weight), membrane stability index (MSI) (56.25 to 61.42%), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity (133.47 to 150.10), MDA content, proline content (101.64 to 100.46), nitrate reductase activity (NRA), and nutrient (N, Zn, and Fe) contents under control and stress conditions. These results concluded that seed priming with a combination of Mg(NO3)2 and ZnSO4 salt is best for improved wheat crop traits under drought stress compared to individual salt and non-priming treatments. Overall, this analysis elucidated that seed priming strengthens the antioxidant capacity under drought conditions by enhancing antioxidant enzymes and alleviating oxidative stress.
Combined Proteomic and Metabolomic Analysis of the Molecular Mechanism Underlying the Response to Salt Stress during Seed Germination in Barley

Abstract:Salt stress is a major abiotic stress factor affecting crop production, and understanding of the response mechanisms of seed germination to salt stress can help to improve crop tolerance and yield. The differences in regulatory pathways during germination in different salt-tolerant barley seeds are not clear. Therefore, this study investigated the responses of different salt-tolerant barley seeds during germination to salt stress at the proteomic and metabolic levels. To do so, the proteomics and metabolomics of two barley seeds with different salt tolerances were comprehensively examined. Through comparative proteomic analysis, 778 differentially expressed proteins were identified, of which 335 were upregulated and 443 were downregulated. These proteins, were mainly involved in signal transduction, propanoate metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, plant hormones and cell wall stress. In addition, a total of 187 salt-regulated metabolites were identified in this research, which were mainly related to ABC transporters, amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and lipid metabolism; 72 were increased and 112 were decreased. Compared with salt-sensitive materials, salt-tolerant materials responded more positively to salt stress at the protein and metabolic levels. Taken together, these results suggest that salt-tolerant germplasm may enhance resilience by repairing intracellular structures, promoting lipid metabolism and increasing osmotic metabolites. These data not only provide new ideas for how seeds respond to salt stress but also provide new directions for studying the molecular mechanisms and the metabolic homeostasis of seeds in the early stages of germination under abiotic stresses.

Abstract:To mitigate the deleterious effects of abiotic stresses signaling molecules play a significant role. The present study was aimed to assess the responses of two differentially salt-tolerant wheat genotypes (Fsd-2008 and S-24) to exogenously applied sodium nitroprusside (SNP) (donor of nitric oxide), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as well as their combined application as seed priming under saline stress. Before sowing seeds were primed with each treatment as soaking for 16 h. Salinity markedly decreased the growth, nutrient uptake and yield, while enhanced the H2O2, malondialdehyde, osmolytes accumulation, antioxidative defense mechanism and Na+ uptake in both wheat cultivars. Comparatively less increase in Na+ uptake was recorded in genotype S-24 in comparison with genotype Fsd-2008. Seed priming with H2O2 and SNP improved the growth and yield, in association with increment in leaf photosynthetic pigments, water relations as well as accumulation of osmolytes. The content of non-enzymatic antioxidant components as well as activities of antioxidant enzymes were also further increased by the seed priming with signaling molecules in both wheat genotypes. Improvement in K+/Na+ ratio due to seed priming was also found in both wheat genotypes but more improvement was in genotype S-24. In conclusion, SNP and H2O2 applied salt tolerance was associated with improved photosynthetic pigments, water relations, osmolytes accumulation, antioxidative defense mechanism, and improved Na+ discrimination.

Abstract:Global warming and salinization are inducing adverse effects on crop yield. Drought priming has been proved to improve drought tolerance of plants at later growth stages, however, whether and how drought priming at early growth stage alleviating salinity stress at later growth stage and improving water use efficiency (WUE) of plants remains unknown. Therefore, two wheat cultivars were subjected to drought priming at the 4th and 6th leaf stage and subsequent moderate salinity stress at 100 mmol NaCl applied at the later jointing growth stage. The growth, physiological responses, ABA signaling and WUE were investigated to unravel the regulating mechanisms of drought priming on subsequent salinity stress. The results showed that drought priming imposed at the early growth stage improved the leaf and root water potential while attenuated the ABA concentration in the leaves ([ABA]leaf) for the primed plants, which increased the stomatal conductance (gs) and photosynthesis (Pn). Consequently, the biomass under the salinity stress was significantly increased due to earlier drought priming. Moreover, drought priming improved the specific leaf N content due to the facilitated root growth and morphology, and this could benefit high leaf photosynthetic capacity during the salinity stress period, improving the Pn and water uptake for the primed plants. Drought priming significantly improved plant level WUE (WUEp) due to considerably enhanced dry biomass compared with non-primed plants under subsequent salinity stress. The significantly increased leaf δ13C under drought priming further demonstrated that the improved leaf δ13C and WUEp was mainly ascribed to the improvement of Pn. Drought primed plants significantly improved K+ concentration and maintained the K+/Na+ ratio compared with non-primed plants under subsequent salinity stress, which could mitigate the adverse effects of excess Na+ and minimize salt-induced ionic toxicity by improving salt tolerance for primed plants. Therefore, drought priming at early growth stage could be considered as a promising strategy for salt-prone areas to optimize agricultural sustainability and food security under changing climatic conditions.

Abstract:BACKGROUND This paper has two objectives. The first is to examine the consistency of the main nutritional studies carried out in Spain over the last fifty years. The second is to use these studies to describe the changes in the Spanish diet over this period and to characterize the present dietary pattern. MATERIAL AND METHODS We have used three types of studies. First, food balance sheets elaborated by Barbancho, FAO, OECD and the Department of Agriculture. Second, surveys on the foods purchased by population groups, in particular the household budget surveys, and the "panel de consumo alimentario" from the Department of Agriculture. Third, food consumption surveys from Catalonia, Vasque Country, Murcia, Madrid, and Reus. RESULTS Protein, lipid and total caloric intake have increased over the last fifty years. Carbohydrate intake has been stable. Caloric intake from lipids has increased, caloric intake from protein has been stable and that from carbohydrates has decreased. All studies are consistent in that, from 1980 onwards, caloric intake from protein has been 12.5-16.7%, caloric intake from carbohydrates has been 39.3-48.1%, and that from lipids has been 36.6-46.0%. The monounsaturated/saturated ratio has been 1.2-1.7 and the polyunsaturated/saturated ratio 0.4-0.7. All data sources show a high consumption of foods typical of the Mediterranean diet, in particular fruit, vegetables, fish and vegetable oil, rich in unsaturated fats. Consistency among data sources is higher when data are expressed as percentage of total caloric intake than when they are expelled in absolute quantities. CONCLUSIONS All data sources suggest that the Spanish diet has changed with the economic development, but it still keeps most of the characteristics of the Mediterranean diet.

Wheat is a major cereal crop in the world and salinity drastically reduces the wheat seedling growth and yield. Therefore, the present study was conducted to explore the potentiality of different signaling molecules such as salicylic acid (SA) and H2O2 to alleviate the salinity-induced growth inhibition of wheat. Place and Duration of the Study: The study was conducted in the Department of Seed Science and Technology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, from September-October, 2021. Methodology: The wheat (cv. BARI-Gom 24) seeds were soaked in normal tap water (hydro-priming), 1 mM SA, 2 mM SA, 0.1 mM H2O2, and 0.15 mM H2O2 solutions for 30 minutes. The untreated seeds were used as control. Eventually, primed seeds were exposed to 150 mM NaCl in Petri dishes during germination. Primed and non-primed seedlings were grown for 15 days under 150 mM NaCl stress condition. Results: The result revealed that salt stress significantly reduced germination percentage (GP), germination index (GI), seed vigor index (SVI), shoot and root length. The results also exhibited that photosynthetic pigments, total chlorophyll, carotenoids, lycopene, and beta-carotene contents were significantly reduced by salt stress. Seed priming with SA and H2O2 and hydro-priming promoted the germination percentage, seedling growth (including shoot and root length), SVI, and photosynthetic pigments. Conclusion: Pretreatment with 1 mM SA and 0.1 mM H2O2 was observed to be relatively more efficient in conferring salinity tolerance of wheat compared with other treating conditions. Abstract:Abstract Combined oral contraceptive (COC) use is a risk factor for venous thrombosis (VT) and related to the specific type of progestin used. VT is accompanied by inflammation and pathophysiological clot formation, that includes aberrant erythrocytes and fibrin(ogen) interactions. In this paper, we aim to determine the influence of progesterone and different synthetic progestins found in COCs on the viscoelasticity of whole blood clots, as well as erythrocyte morphology and membrane ultrastructure, in an in vitro laboratory study. Thromboelastography (TEG), light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were our chosen methods. Our results point out that progestins influence the rate of whole blood clot formation. Alterations to erythrocyte morphology and membrane ultrastructure suggest the presence of eryptosis. We also note increased rouleaux formation, erythrocyte aggregation, and spontaneous fibrin formation in whole blood which may explain the increased risk of VT associated with COC use. Although not all COC users will experience a thrombotic event, individuals with a thrombotic predisposition, due to inflammatory or hematological illness, should be closely monitored to prevent pathological thrombosis.
Enhancing Wheat Growth and Yield through Salicylic Acid-Mediated Regulation of Gas Exchange, Antioxidant Defense, and Osmoprotection under Salt Stress

Abstract:Salinity is a major challenge for agricultural productivity, adversely affecting crop growth and yield. In recent years, various techniques have been developed to increase crop tolerance to salinity, including seed priming. This study was carried out to assess the effects of salicylic acid (SA) priming (0-, 10- and 20-mM) in comparison with hydropriming on growth, physio-biochemical activities, and yield of two wheat varieties (AARI-11 and Ujala-15) under 0- and 170-mM sodium chloride (NaCl) toxicity. The exposure of wheat plants to NaCl led to a significant reduction in various growth factors, including fresh weight (40%), total chlorophyll (39%), stomatal conductance (42%), shoot Ca2+ (39%), and 1000-grain weight (34%). In contrast, salt stress triggered the activities of POD, SOD, CAT, glycine-betaine, phenolics, and proline. The application of 20 mM SA through seed priming was found to greatly improve the fresh root weight, chlorophyll b, POD activities, shoot Ca2+, and overall yield (up to 71, 66, 35, 57, and 44%, respectively) under salt stress. While hydropriming also enhanced wheat tolerance to salinity.
The Efficiency of Seed Priming with Dead Sea Water for Improving Germination and Early Seedling Growth of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under Salinity

Abstract:Salinity is considered the most critical environmental factor which negatively affects the germination and growth of plants. In this study, the potential of using Dead Sea water (DS) as a seed priming agent for the mitigation of the adverse effects of salinity on seed germination and growth performance of wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) was investigated. Germination of wheat seeds primed with different doses of DS; 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% were evaluated under different saline conditions (0, 100, 200, and 300 mM NaCl). High salinity (300 mM NaCl) remarkably inhibited germination attributes and reduced seedling length. However, seeds primed with DS exhibited improved germination parameters and seedling growth. Among the different DS concentrations used, the 10% DS priming achieved the highest increase in final germination percentage tolerance, germination index, relative germination salt tolerance, and seedling length. The increased tolerance to salinity was associated with improved water imbibition, α-amylase activity, antioxidant capacity and osmotic homeostasis correlated with high proline and soluble sugar levels. In addition, DS priming increased the membrane stability index, and reduced malondialdehyde content and K + leakage besides lowering Na + /K + ratio. Overall, priming with DS could be a promising strategy for minimizing the damaging effects of salinity in wheat.

Abstract:This 2-year field study investigates the potential of seed priming to mitigate losses caused by drought stress at different phenophases of wheat. Wheat seeds were soaked either in distilled water or in aerated solution of CaCl2 (ψs −1.25 MPa) for 18 h to accomplish hydropriming and osmopriming, respectively. The soil moisture was maintained at 90–100% field capacity (well-watered) or 45–50% field capacity at vegetative (vegetative drought) and reproductive (terminal drought) phases. Allometric traits leaf area index, leaf area duration, and crop growth rate were initially more affected by vegetative drought; however, terminal drought was more severe at later stages. Drought at both phenophases, especially terminal drought, impaired the entire yield-related traits of wheat; however, osmopriming compensated the drought-induced losses up to a certain extent. Osmopriming improved the wheat grain yield, economic benefits, and allometric traits under vegetative and terminal drought as well as well-watered conditions. It is recommended that the physiological, biochemical, and genetic mechanisms of osmopriming must be explored to find more valuable insights for improving wheat productivity.

Parental salt priming improves the low temperature tolerance in wheat offspring via modulating the seed proteome

Abstract:Low temperature is one of the main abiotic stresses that inhibit wheat growth and development. To understand the physiological mechanism of salt priming induced low temperature tolerance and its transgenerational effects, the chlorophyl b-deficient mutant (ANK) and its wild type (WT) wheat were subjected to low temperature stress after parental salt priming. Salt priming significantly decreased the levels of superoxide anions, hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde in both parental and offspring plants under low temperature. The catalase activity in parental wheat and activities of dehydroascorbate reductase and glutathione reductase in the offspring were significantly increased by salt priming under low temperature. Meanwhile, salt priming contributed to mantaining the integrity of chloroplast structure and relatively higher net photosynthetic rate (Pn) in both generations under low temperature. Salt priming also improved the carbohydrate metabolism enzyme activities of parental and offspring plants, such as phosphoglucomutase, fructokinase and sucrose synthase. In addition, ANK plants had significantly higher carbohydrate metabolism enzyme activities than WT plants. The differential expressed proteins (DEP) in seeds of two genotypes under salt priming were mainly related to homeostasis, electron transfer activity, photosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism. Correlation network analysis showed that the expression of DEP under salt priming was significantly correlated to sucrose concentration and cytoplasmic peroxidase (POX) activity in WT, while that was correlated to various carbohydrate metabolism enzyme activities in ANK plants. These results indicated that the parental salt priming induced modulations of seed proteome regulated the ROS metabolism, photosynthetic carbon assimilation and carbohydrate metabolism, hence enhancing the low temperature tolerance in offspring wheat.

The highest salt (500 mM) tolerant fungal colonies were selected and purified. Paecilomyces at 61.3 × 10-6 conidia/ml and Trichoderma at about 64.9 × 10-3 conidia/ml of colony forming unit (CFU) were used for priming wheat and mung bean seeds. Twenty- days-old primed and unprimed seedlings of wheat and mung bean were subjected to NaCl treatments at 100 and 200 mM. Results indicate that both endophytes sustain salt resistance in crops, however T. hamatum significantly increased the growth (141 to 209%) and chlorophyll content (81 to 189%), over unprimed control under extreme salinity. Moreover, the reduced levels (22 to 58%) of oxidative stress markers (H2O2 and MDA) corresponded with the increased antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities (141 and 110%). Photochemical attributes like quantum yield (FV/FM) (14 to 32%) and performance index (PI) (73 to 94%) were also enhanced in bio-primed plants in comparison to control under stress. In addition, the energy loss (DIO/RC) was considerably less (31 to 46%), corresponding with lower damage at PS II level in primed plants. Also, the increase in I and P steps of OJIP curve in T. hamatum and P. lilacinus primed plants showed the availability of more active reaction centers (RC) at PS II under salt stress in comparison to unprimed control plants. Infrared thermographic images also showed that bio-primed plants were resistant to salt stress. Hence, it is concluded that the use of bio-priming with salt tolerant endophytes specifically T. hamatum can be an effective approach to mitigate the salt stress cosnequences and develop a potential salt resistance in crop plants.
Parental Drought-Priming Enhances Tolerance to Post-anthesis Drought in Offspring of Wheat.

Abstract:Drought is the major abiotic stress that decreases plant water status, inhibits photosynthesis, induces oxidative stress, restricts growth and finally lead to the reduction of wheat yield. It has been proven that drought priming during vegetative growth stage could enhance tolerance to drought stress at grain filling in wheat. However, whether drought priming imposed at grain filling in parental plants could induce drought tolerance in the offspring is not known. In this study, drought priming was successively applied in the first, the second and the third generation of wheat to obtain the plants of T1 (primed for one generation), T2 (primed for two generations), T3 (primed for three generations). The differently primed plants were then subjected to drought stress during grain filling in the fourth generation. Under drought stress, the parentally primed (T1D, T2D, T3D) plants, disregarding the number of generations, showed higher grain yield, leaf photosynthetic rate and antioxidant capacity as well as lower O-2(center dot-) release rate and contents of H2O2 and MDA than the non-primed (TOD) plants, suggesting that drought priming induced the transgenerational stress tolerance to drought stress. Moreover, the parentally primed plants showed higher leaf water status, which may result from the higher contents of proline and glycine betaine, and higher activities of Delta 1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase (P5CS) and betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH), compared with the non-primed plants under drought stress. In addition, there was no significant difference among three generations under drought, and the drought priming in parental generations did not affect the grain yield of the offspring plants under control condition. Collectively, the enhanced accumulation of proline and glycine betaine in the parentally primed plants could have played critical roles in parental priming induced tolerance to drought stress. This research provided a potential approach to improve drought tolerance of offspring plants by priming parental plants.
Sand Priming in Relation to Physiological Changes in Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Waxy Maize under High-Salt Stress

Abstract:Seeds of three waxy maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars, cv. Suyunuo 1, Huyunuo 1 and Zhenuoyu 1, were used to investigate the effects of sand priming on germination and physiological changes under a high-salt concentration (1% NaCl) stress. Waxy maize seeds were mixed with sand containing 4% (v/w) water, sealed in plastic box, and then were primed at 15 degrees C for 48 h. While sand priming significantly affected the speed of germination in two cultivars, and contributed to shorten mean germination time for the three cultivars studied. It also significantly enhanced shoot height, seedling fresh and dry weight in the three cultivars compared to unprimed control. Sand priming also increased the content of soluble sugar and the activities of peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT). At the same time, the malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline (Pro) accumulation decreased under a high-salt stress condition. Thus, it indicated that sand priming could improve speed of germination and seedling growth, suggesting beneficial effects on salt tolerance of waxy maize seedlings.
Induction of Osmotic Stress Resistance by Seed Osmo-Priming in Winter Wheat (triticum Aestivum L.) During Post-Germinative Stages

Abstract:The potential of wheat (Triticum aestivum) seed osmo-priming for post-germinative osmo-stress resistance was evaluated. Further, for comparative evaluation of seed osmo-priming and plant stress-acclimation, a set of plants was stress-acclimated prior to osmo-stress treatment. Under osmo-stress at the post-germination stage, plants from osmo-primed seeds produced 2.3% higher root biomass, 21.6% longer roots, accumulated 15.1% higher soluble sugar content and respectively, 10.4 and 12.8% higher activity of SOD and POD in the roots compared with plants from unprimed seeds. At the post-seedling establishment stage, seed-osmo-primed plants produced 29.9% higher root biomass, 15.2% longer roots, accumulated 32.7% higher soluble sugar content and 31.2% higher proline content in the roots, while the activity of SOD and POD was respectively, 19.6 and 13.1% higher than the unprimed plants. Plant stress-acclimation induced osmo-stress tolerance was exemplified by 6.9% higher root biomass, 4.6% longer roots, 52.7% higher soluble sugar content in roots, 23.9% higher proline content in the roots and 27.0% higher activity of SOD in the roots under osmo-stress when compared with the unprimed plants. The data of seedling morphology and physiological activity under control conditions showed adverse effects of stress acclimation whereas seed osmo-priming-induced stress resistance resulted in advanced germination and higher osmolyte accumulation.

Abstract:Drought is a severe environmental challenge of climate change instigating huge losses to forage production and quality. The biochemical and physiological responses of exogenous chitosan (Ct) to confer drought tolerance in alfalfa, is still unclear. Ct seed priming effects on underlying mechanisms were investigated in alfalfa to improve its forage yield and quality under drought stress. Initially, new promising exotic alfalfa genotypes (44) were tested under drought stress (80%, 60%, and 40% FC, field capacity) for their drought tolerance potential. Various Ct doses (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2%) as seed priming were evaluated in second experiment under drought stress of 80% and 40% FC in terms of improved biomass. The identified PI502452 (drought-tolerant) and PI172982 (drought-sensitive) genotypes including Sgd. Lucerne (local variety) were primed to optimized Ct dose (0.6%), and further tested under same drought levels to understand the mechanisms of drought tolerance. Drought exposure remarkably inhibited the chlorophyll pigments and water status, thereby, reduced the biomass production of all tested alfalfas. Nevertheless, drought ameliorative effects of Ct seed priming were more evident in PI502452 and Sgd. Lucerne than PI172982 genotypes in terms of enhanced chlorophyll pigments, water relations, and upregulated antioxidative capacity. A marked effect of Ct seed priming was also exhibited on improved quality traits viz. crude protein, ether extract, ash, and nitrogen free extract of drought-stressed alfalfas. Ct seed priming is considered effective to modulate the physiological and biochemical processes for improving forage yield and quality of alfalfa.

Abstract:Saline stress is one of the most critical abiotic stress factors that can lessen crops' productivity. However, emerging nanotechnology, nano-fertilizers, and developing knowledge of phytochromes can potentially mitigate the negative effects of saline stress on seed germination. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of seed priming either with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs; 50 and 100 mg L−1) or 24-epibrassinolide (EBL; 0.2 and 0.4 μM) and their combinations on maize (Zea mays L.) grains sown in salt-stressed soil (50 and 100 mM NaCl). Saline stress treatments significantly affected all germination traits and chemical analysis of seeds as well as α-amylase activity. Compared to un-primed seeds, seed priming with ZnO-NPs or EBL and their combinations significantly increased the cumulative germination percentage, germination energy, imbibition rate, increase in grain weight, K+ content, and α-amylase activity, and significantly reduced germination time, days to 50% emergence, Na+ uptake, and Na+/K+ ratio of maize sown in salt-stressed-soil (50 or 100 mM NaCl). The combination of 100 mg ZnO-NPs L−1 + 0.2 μM EBL resulted in the highest improvements for most of the studied traits of maize seeds sown in salt-stressed soil in comparison to all other individual and combined treatments.
