Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Recent researches have shown that, in principle, computer-assisted design, computer-assisted manufacture and rapid prototype technologies (CAD/CAM/RP) can be successfully applied to the fabrication of removable partial denture (RPD) alloy frameworks and replace laboratory crafting techniques. The CAD/CAM techniques have been widely used for a long time to manufacture dental prostheses. Selective laser sintering (SLS), as an additive manufacturing (AM) method, is a new rapid prototyping technology which can be applied in the manufacturing of dental prosthesis based on layer-wise material addition.OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical efficiency of cobalt–chromium removable partial denture framework fabricated using CAD/Selective Laser Sintering technology clinically and cytologically.MATERIALS AND METHODS: To carry out this study, six maxillary partially edentulous patients (class III modification 1. According to Kennedy classification) were selected from those attending the prosthodontics department, faculty of dentistry, Alexandria University. For each patient a cobalt chromium removable partial denture framework was fabricated using CAD/SLS technique then it was tried in and teeth were added, casted and inserted. Plaque index, gingival index, peridontal probing depth and clinical attachment level were evaluated and recorded for all patients at time of insertion, after 3 months and 6 months of follow up periods.RESULTS: all removable partial dentures showed minimum plaque accumulation, no signs of gingival tissue inflammation, and no significance changes of periodontal probing depth and no significance of attachment loss of the peridontium.CONCLUSION: all patients were satisfied with their dentures which fabricated by the computer aided design-computer aided manufacturing -rapid prototyping laser sintering technique (CAD/CAM/SLS) showing good oral environment response.
Clinical Evaluation of a One-Piece Polyetheretherketone Removable Partial Denture Fabricated Using a Novel Digital Workflow: A Self-Controlled Clinical Trial.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To explore the clinical application of one-piece polyetheretherketone (PEEK) removable partial dentures (RPDs) fabricated using a novel digital workflow and to evaluate their weights and fits in vivo and patient satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS:Fifteen cases with posterior partially edentulous situations were selected, and each patient received two types of RPDs, including a novel digital workflow (test group) and a conventional workflow (control group). For the test group, one-piece RPDs were designed through three-dimensional (3D) methods by scanning stone casts and fabricated by milling PEEK discs. Each RPD was weighed. The gaps between the oral tissue and RPDs in each group were duplicated using a polyvinylsiloxane (PVS) replica and measured by 3D analysis. A visual analog scale (VAS) was used to evaluate the patient's satisfaction. Paired t-tests were used to compare the differences in the weight, the gaps of each RPD, and VAS values between the two groups. One-way analysis of variance tests was used to compare the differences in the gap among different components in each group. RESULTS:The RPD in the test group weighed less than that in the control group (p < 0.01). No statistically significant differences in the gaps of denture bases and rests (p > 0.05) were found between the two groups, but the gaps of major connectors in the test group were significantly smaller than in the control group (p < 0.05). The VAS scores for comfortableness and masticatory efficiency were not significantly different between the two groups (p > 0.05) but the scores for the aesthetic appearance of the clasps in the test group were significantly higher than that in the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS:One-piece PEEK RPDs manufactured using a novel digital workflow weighed less than conventional RPDs and exhibited a clinically acceptable internal fit. Although the aesthetic appearance of the PEEK clasps was superior to the control, there is still room for improvement.

Abstract:Statement of problem: Implant-assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs) have been used to treat partially edentulous patients, yet limited information is available on the relationship between prosthetic complications and patient satisfaction as compared with conventional removable partial dentures (RPDs). Purpose: The purpose of this randomized controlled clinical trial was to measure the satisfaction of patients who received either conventional or RPDs assisted by short implants and to assess and compare the incidence and type of prosthetic complications after a mean observational period of 34 months. Material and methods: Thirty-one healthy and bilaterally edentulous (Kennedy Class I) individuals who were seeking treatment and were candidates for posterior implant placement, were randomly allocated to either the conventional removable partial denture (CRPD) or the short implant-assisted removable partial denture (IARPD) groups. CRPDs following the same fabrication procedures were delivered to all participants irrespective of the group assignment,. One month after delivery, each participant from the IARPD group received 2 short implants. Upon osseointegration, the existing prostheses were converted to IARPDs with the use of LOCATOR attachments. The chi-squared test, log-rank test, and Mann-Whitney U test were used for statistical analysis (α=.05). Results: Data were collected from 31 participants: 18 in the CRPD and 13 in the IARPD group. The results showed that prosthetic complications occurred in both CRPD and IARPD groups. The chi-squared test showed no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups with regard to the incidence of prosthetic complications (P=.474). The log-rank test used for survival rate and complications showed no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups (P=.903). The Mann-Whitney U test showed no statistically significant difference in patient satisfaction between the 2 groups (P=.938). Conclusions: No statistically significant difference in the incidence and type of prosthetic complications was observed between conventional and RPDs assisted by short implants after a mean observation period of 34 months.

Polyoxymethylene (POM) also known as acetal resin has been used as an alternative tooth- colored denture base and denture clasps material since 1986 and was promoted primarily for superior esthetic. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate clinically the use of Polyoxymethylene partial dentures designed and fabricated by using CAD/CAM technology compared to conventional cobalt chromium partial denture through both the masticatory efficiency and patient satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This clinical trial was conducted on twenty mandibular partially edentulous patients (Kennedy class I) who received two types of RPD. Type I was Polyoxymethylene partial denture designed and fabricated by using CAD/CAM Technology and Type II was cobalt chromium partial denture fabricated using the conventional technique .At time of denture insertion, the masticatory efficiency of both types of dentures was evaluated for each patient .After 3 months of denture use, each patient was clinically evaluated through both the masticatory efficiency and patient satisfaction. RESULTS: Type I RPD showed better masticatory efficiency than Type II RPD but without statistical significant values at different follow up periods. Patients showed more satisfaction with type I RPD than with type II RPD with a significant value. CONCLUSIONS: Polyoxymethylene partial denture designed and fabricated by using CAD/CAM Technology is a favorable treatment for partially edentulous patients showing improvement of masticatory efficiency and favorable patient satisfaction.
Race as a Predictor of Palliative Care Referral Time, Hospice Utilization, and Hospital Length of Stay: A Retrospective Noncomparative Analysis

Abstract:Background: Palliative care is associated with significant benefits, including reduced pain and suffering, an increased likelihood of patients dying in their preferred location, and decreased health-care expenditures. Racial and ethnic disparities are well-documented in hospice use and referral patterns; however, it is unclear whether these disparities apply to inpatient palliative care services. Objective: To determine if race is a significant predictor of time to inpatient palliative care consult, patient enrollment in hospice, and patients’ overall hospital length of stay among patients of an inpatient palliative care service. Design: Retrospective noncomparative analysis. Setting: Urban academic medical center in the United States. Patients: 3207 patients referred to an inpatient palliative care service between March 2006 and April 2015. Measurements: Time to palliative care consult, disposition of hospice/not hospice (excluding patients who died), and hospital length of stay among patients by racial (Asian, black, Native American/Eskimo, Hispanic, white, Unknown) and ethnic (Hispanic/Latino, non-Hispanic, Unknown) background. Results: Race was not a significant predictor of time to inpatient palliative care consult, discharge to hospice, or hospital length of stay. Similarly, black/white, Hispanic/white, and Asian/white variables were not significant predictors of hospice enrollment (Ps > .05). Limitations: Study was conducted at 1 urban academic medical center, limiting generalizability; hospital race and ethnicity categorizations may also limit interpretation of results. Conclusions: In this urban hospital, race was not a predictor of time to inpatient palliative care service consult, discharge to hospice, or hospital length of stay. Confirmatory studies of inpatient palliative care services in other institutions are needed.

Abstract:Statement of problem Three-dimensional (3D) printing of cobalt chromium (Co-Cr) removable partial dentures (RPDs)by selective laser melting (SLM) has been claimed to be less challenging than by conventional casting and provides significant improvements. However, the adaptation and fit of the SLM framework and the optimum build orientation are still unclear. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro and clinical study was to evaluate the effect of different build orientations on the adaptation of removable partial denture frameworks fabricated by SLM technology in vitro and to compare the adaptation of the SLM and conventional RPD frameworks clinically. Material and methods A master model simulating a maxillary arch of Kennedy class III modification 1 was scanned and duplicated to create a virtual 3D cast and reference cast. Four groups (n=40) of Co-Cr RPD frameworks were fabricated. For the SLM groups, the Co-Cr framework was virtually designed and exported for SLM printing. The SLM printing was done in 3 different build orientations: 0-degree (n=10), 45-degree (n=10), and 90-degree (n=10) groups. Other Co-Cr frameworks were conventionally cast (n=10). All Co-Cr frameworks were scanned and virtually superimposed with the master model using a surface-matching software program. The gap under 9 selected points in the palatal major connectors was analyzed and calculated. A smaller gap indicates more surface adaptation and close contact between the palatal major connector and the master model. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunnett T3 tests (α=.05). Three patients with a partially dentate maxillary arch were enrolled in the clinical part based on inclusion criteria. Two RPD frameworks were provided for each patient (conventional casting and SLM printing). The adaptation of each framework was assessed by measuring the gap between the palatal major connector of the framework and the palate with light-body silicone. The differences in adaptation between the conventional and SLM frameworks were compared by using independent t tests (α=.05). Results The in vitro study identified significant differences in the adaptation of the palatal major connector among the 4 groups ( P <.001), except for conventional and 0-degree SLM printing ( P =.999). The conventional and 0-degree SLM frameworks exhibited the best adaptation, with the lowest gap underneath the palatal major connector of the RPD framework (0.01 ±0.02 mm and 0.01 ±0.01 mm, respectively). In the clinical part of the study, no significant difference was found between the adaptation of SLM and the conventional framework ( P =.430) Conclusions The adaptation of SLM printing can be maximized with less gap under the palatal major connector of the RPD framework when using the 0-degree build orientation. Co-Cr frameworks produced with SLM printing technology were comparable with conventionally produced frameworks; hence, SLM printed frameworks can be an alternative for clinical applications when optimum SLM parameters are applied.

A comparison of two digital techniques for the fabrication of complete removable dental prostheses: A pilot clinical study

Abstract:Statement of problem: The introduction of digital techniques might improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of treatment with complete removable dental prostheses (CDs). Purpose: The purpose of this pilot clinical trial was to study and compare the clinical feasibility, complications during fabrication, and quality of 2 types of digitally designed CDs. Material and methods: Five participants were recruited into this preliminary clinical trial. For each participant, 2 pairs of digital CDs were designed. Prosthesis bases were fabricated by using identical data, either by milling from polymethyl methacrylate blanks or by injection molding. The treatment involved 4 clinical appointments. Polyvinyl siloxane impressions were made with custom trays and were subsequently digitalized. After evaluating esthetics and function with trial dentures, the CD bases were fabricated. To evaluate the workflow and quality of the prostheses, the clinical outcome was measured on 6-point scales ranging from poor (grade 6) to excellent (grade 1). For both prosthesis types, the following aspects were examined: fit, retention, esthetics, phonetics, maxillomandibular relation, and occlusion. Results: Both types of digital CDs could be fabricated without major complications. Only a few minor complications occurred during the fabrication process, predominantly esthetic issues. No pronounced difference was found between the prostheses concerning functional aspects. The definitive esthetic outcome was rated as very good. Conclusions: The CDs fabricated using digital technology met the clinical requirements. However, more research is needed to confirm the results of this investigation.
Patient-reported outcome measures compared to professional dental assessments of monolithic ZrO2 implant fixed dental prostheses in complete digital workflows: A double-blind crossover randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Purpose: This double-blind randomized controlled trial analyzed patient-reported outcome measures in terms of subjective patient satisfaction compared to objective dental evaluation of prosthetic treatment with 3-unit monolithic zirconium dioxide implant fixed dental prostheses (iFDPs) in 3 digital workflows. Material and methods: Twenty patients were restored with 3 iFDPs each on Straumann TL-implants with 2 completely digital workflows using different intraoral optical scanning systems with model-free fabrication of the restoration (Trios 3/3Shape [Test-1]; Virtuo Vivo/Straumann [Test-2]), and mixed analog-digital workflow with conventional impressions and digitized gypsum casts (Impregum/3M Espe [Control]). The order of impression-taking and the prosthetic try-in were randomly allocated. Sixty iFDPs were compared for patient satisfaction and dental evaluation using ANOVA. Results: For iFDP evaluation, patients generally provided more favorable ratings than dental experts, regardless of the workflow. ANOVA revealed no significant difference for overall satisfaction when comparing Test-1, Test-2, or Control, either for patients (f-ratio: 0.13; p = 0.876) or dentist (f-ratio: 1.55: p = 0.221). Secondary, patients clearly favored the digital impression workflows over the conventional approach (f-ratio: 14.57; p < 0.001). Overall, the 3Shape workflow (Test-1) received the highest scores for all analyses. Conclusions: The different digital workflows demonstrated minor influence on the subjective and objective evaluation of the monolithic zirconium dioxide iFDPs in nonesthetic regions; however, the dentist may significantly increase patient satisfaction by choosing intraoral scanning instead of conventional impressions. The dentist has to consider individual patients' needs to fulfill their expectations for a personalized solution.
Two-Year Clinical Trial Of Resin-Bonded Fixed Partial Dentures Incorporating Novel Attachments

Abstract:Purpose: This controlled clinical trial evaluated the clinical performance of a new resin-bonded fixed partial denture (FPD) system and compared the clinical performance with that of conventional FPDs. Materials and Methods: Resin-bonded FPDs replaced 12 single anterior and 9 premolar missing teeth in 20 healthy patients. Conventional three-unit FPDs (metal-ceramic crowns or complete cast-metal crowns) replaced 10 single anterior and 10 single posterior missing teeth in 20 age-matched controls. Retention, marginal integrity, periodontal condition of the FPDs, esthetics and hygiene of pontics, and secondary caries were clinically evaluated immediately, 1 month, and 2 years after cementation. Results: After 2 years, no failure was observed in the resin-bonded or conventional FPDs because of debonding from the abutment teeth. All clinical results evaluated for both groups were satisfactory or acceptable. No secondary caries was found in either group. Fisher's exact test and/or continuity-corrected chi-square test showed no significant differences of satisfactory rates between the resin-bonded and conventional FPDs for all variables evaluated. Conclusion: Short-term clinical results indicate that resin-bonded FPDs may be used as fixed prostheses to replace lost single anterior or premolar teeth with minimum preparation of abutment teeth. This restoration did not adversely influence pulpal or periodontal health. However, a 2-year clinical trial for a new FPD can only provide preliminary data, and longer term observations are clearly necessary.

Abstract:Statement of problem The use of a scannable healing abutment is a convenient option for fabricating implant-supported restorations (ISRs) with a digital workflow; however, clinical studies evaluating prosthetic efficacy are lacking. Purpose The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to investigate the prosthetic efficacy of definitive posterior single ISRs fabricated after scanning using a scannable healing abutment-scan peg (SHA-SP) in comparison with a conventional scan body (CSB). The time for data acquisition, quality of proximal and occlusal contacts, and relative occlusal force of ISRs were measured. Material and methods Twenty-four participants eligible for single ISRs to replace the mandibular first molar with adjacent and antagonist teeth present were randomly allocated to either a study group (n=12) receiving ISRs after intraoral scanning using an SHA-SP or a control group (n=12) receiving ISRs after intraoral scanning using CSB. During the surgical procedure, a prefabricated contoured scannable healing abutment was screwed to the implant in the SHA-SP group, while a custom-made healing abutment was used in the CSB group. After a healing period of 3 months, an intraoral scan was made, and the duration of data acquisition was recorded. The ISRs were milled from zirconia and evaluated for the quality of proximal and occlusal contacts using dental floss and shim stock, respectively. The relative occlusal forces of the ISRs and their contralateral natural teeth were measured using a digital occlusal analyzer. Statistical analysis was done using an independent sample t test for quantitative variables and a Pearson chi-squared test for qualitative variables between the tested groups (α=.05). Results The direct digital workflow using SHA-SP was statistically less time consuming than the CSB ( P <.001). The 2 groups were statistically similar regarding the quality of the proximal contacts ( P =.281) or occlusal contacts ( P =.307) and the relative occlusal forces of ISRs ( P= .315). The relative occlusal forces of the ISRs in both groups were significantly lower than those of their contralateral natural teeth ( P <.001). Conclusions Direct digital workflow using SHA-SP was more rapid, saving clinical chairside time, and produced proximal and occlusal contacts of comparable quality with those obtained with CSB. The relative occlusal forces of ISRs in both workflows were lower than their contralateral natural teeth.

Abstract:PURPOSE The aim of this study was to explore the application of computer-aided design and rapid prototyping (CAD/RP) for removable partial denture (RPD) frameworks and evaluate the fitness of the technique for clinical application. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three-dimensional (3D) images of dentition defects were obtained using a lab scanner. The RPD frameworks were designed using commercial dental software and manufactured using selective laser melting (SLM). A total of 15 cases of RPD prostheses were selected, wherein each patient received two types of RPD frameworks, prepared by CAD/RP and investment casting. Primary evaluation of the CAD/RP framework was performed by visual inspection. The gap between the occlusal rest and the relevant rest seat was then replaced using silicone, and the specimens were observed and measured. Paired t test was used to compare the average thickness and distributed thickness between the CAD/RP and investment casting frameworks. Analysis of variance test was used to compare the difference in thickness among different zones. RESULTS The RPD framework was designed and directly manufactured using the SLM technique. CAD/RP frameworks may meet the clinical requirements with satisfactory retention and stability and no undesired rotation. Although the average gap between the occlusal rest and the corresponding rest seat of the CAD/RP frameworks was slightly larger than that of the investment casting frameworks (P < .05), it was acceptable for clinical application. CONCLUSION RPD frameworks can be designed and fabricated directly using digital techniques with acceptable results in clinical application.
Patient and Clinical Evaluation of Traditional Metal and Polyamide Removable Partial Dentures in an Elderly Cohort

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate several clinical and functional parameters by administration of specific questionnaires to an elderly patient's cohort wearing three different types of removable partial denture (RPD): VALPLAST-RPD (Polyamide VALPLAST), CoCr-RPD (cobalt-chromium alloy), and PMMA-RPD (heat polymerized polymethyl methacrylate). Materials and methods: One hundred twenty patients (mean age 73 years) were included in this study. All patients were treated with a removable partial denture for the maxillary arch. After 1 year of use, patients and clinicians were asked to compile specific questionnaire on patient satisfaction, including aesthetic, functional, and clinical outcomes. It was also evaluated whether the localization of the missing teeth according to Kennedy classification may affect these parameters. Categorical data obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed by chi-squared test. Results: VALPLAST-RPD was the most satisfactory aesthetically. Nevertheless, patients of VALPLAST-RPD group reported increased difficulty in cleaning the prosthesis, roughness perceived by the tongue, and increased retention loss (p < 0.001). Patients with PMMA-RPD claimed a higher level of encumbrance (p < 0.001) and increased speech difficulties (p = 0.002). Clinically, patients of VALPLAST-RPD and PMMA-RPD groups displayed redness of the mucosa area around abutment teeth (p < 0.001). Patients of VALPLAST-RPD group had four cases of artificial teeth loss and two cases of discoloration. The position of missing teeth did not significantly influence any parameter. Conclusions: Each RPD material utilized may present advantages and disadvantages in an elderly population. VALPLAST-RPD may be recommended to older patients with non-extensive edentulous areas supported by anterior and posterior teeth, and not subjected to strong chewing loads. The main advantages are aesthetic satisfaction and easiness to insert and remove it.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of finishing and polishing techniques on the fit accuracy, metal loss, and surface roughness of conventional versus CAD‐CAM removable partial denture (RPD) frameworks. Materials and Methods A 3D‐printed maxillary Kennedy class III modification I model served as the master cast. Forty impressions (20 conventional and 20 digital) were divided into four groups: lost‐wax technique (Group I: LWT), CAD‐printed (Group II: CAD‐RP), CAD‐printed from a stone cast (Group III: CAD‐RPS), and lost‐wax technique from resin‐printed models (Group IV: LWTR). Various finishing and polishing techniques were applied, followed by digital scanning for fit accuracy assessment using surface matching software. Metal thickness loss and surface roughness were evaluated pre‐ and post‐finishing and polishing. The Kruskal‐Wallis test followed by the Scheffe post‐hoc test were conducted to evaluate the fit accuracy between groups (α = 0.05). Results Color mapping revealed significant differences (p < 0.001) between conventionally casted RPD frameworks and 3D‐printed groups post‐finishing and polishing. The most significant gap was observed with the guide plates from printed RPD frameworks. The D‐Lyte technique resulted in less metal loss compared to the conventional finishing and polishing technique (p < 0.001). Conclusion Within the limitations of this study, conventionally processed RPD groups exhibited better overall fit accuracy post‐finishing and polishing. Both conventional cast and 3D‐printed RPD frameworks showed clinically acceptable fit accuracy. The D‐Lyte technique presented less metal loss and smoother surfaces compared to other groups, suggesting it as a viable alternative.

Randomized trial investigating zirconia electroplated telescopic retainers: quality of life outcomes

Abstract:Objectives: The study aims to evaluate the effect of electroplated telescopic removable dental prostheses (E-RDPs) with zirconia primary crowns on oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Materials and methods: For E-RDPs, electroplating is used to produce precisely fitting gold copings on telescopic primary crowns. These copings are bonded intra-orally to the denture framework. Fifty-six participants in need of 60 removable restorations were randomly allocated one of two materials for the primary crowns: cobalt-chromium alloy or zirconia. OHRQoL was assessed by use of the 49-item Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-49) and by additional patient self-rating at baseline before treatment, and after 6 and 12 months. Statistical analysis was performed by use of one- and two-sample t-tests and analysis of covariance. Results: Mean OHIP sum score at baseline was 53.4 (SD 37.4, 95 % CI 41.3-62). At follow-ups, it decreased significantly (after 6 months: mean 20, SD 26, 95 % CI 13-27.1; after 12 months: mean 16.4, SD 17.9, 95 % CI 11.6-21.2). The mean reduction in OHIP sum score after 12 months was 25 (SD 31.2, 95 % CI 13.1-36.9) for cobalt-chromium alloy and 44.4 (SD 32.3, 95 % CI 31.1-57.8) for zirconia. However, no statistically significant difference of the two materials on OHIP change or patient self-rating was detected. Conclusions: Although OHRQoL was improved by using both cobalt-chromium alloy and zirconia primary crowns for E-RDPs, post-treatment differences between the groups were not statistically significant. Clinical relevance: Zirconia E-RDPs enhance OHRQoL. However, zirconia primary crowns do not outperform cobalt-chromium alloy crowns regarding patient satisfaction-despite their tooth-like color.

Retrospective clinical evaluation of implant-assisted removable partial dentures combined with implant surveyed prostheses

Abstract:Statement of problem: Implant-assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs) have been proposed as a treatment option for partially edentulous patients. However, evidence regarding the outcome of implant-assisted removable partial dentures with implant surveyed prostheses is limited. Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to evaluate the clinical status and complications of IARPDs combined with implant surveyed prostheses in terms of clinical tissue condition, marginal bone resorption, and prosthetic complications. Material and methods: Patients treated with IARPDs combined with implant surveyed prostheses who had worn an IARPD for at least 12 months were included. Twenty-four participants (25 prostheses, 12 maxillary, and 13 mandibular) were evaluated, with 80 implants used as abutments for IARPDs. The average follow-up period was 27.6 months, and the maximum follow-up was 78 months. Implant cumulative survival rate, marginal bone resorption, probing depth, peri-implant inflammation, bleeding, plaque, calculus, and complications were evaluated. Results: No implant failure occurred, and all implants functioned without clinical mobility. Mean marginal bone resorption of implants at 1 year after loading was 0.77 ±0.63 mm, and mean probing depth was 3.4 ±0.1 mm. No patient developed peri-implantitis, and no implant failed. Two clasp fractures, 1 rest fracture, 1 decementation, and 1 fracture of porcelain on an implant surveyed prosthesis were detected at 12 months after loading. Conclusions: Well-planned IARPDs using implant surveyed prostheses were clinically successful. Longitudinal and systematic clinical studies are necessary to confirm these results.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare implant-supported removable partial dentures (ISRPDs) with distal extension removable partial dentures (DERPDs) in terms of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs: patients' quality of life and satisfaction) and to determine mechanical and biological complications associated with ISRPDs.MATERIAL AND METHODS: An electronic search was performed on four databases to identify studies treating Kennedy class I or II edentulous patients and which compared ISRPDs with DERPDs in terms of PROMS and studies, which evaluated mechanical and biological complications associated ISRPDs. Two authors independently extracted data on quality of life, patient satisfaction, and biomechanical complications from these studies. The risk of bias was assessed for each study, and for PROMs, the authors performed a meta-analysis by using a random-effects model.RESULTS: Thirteen articles were included based on the selection criteria. The difference in mean scores for quality of life (30.5 ± 1.8; 95% confidence interval [CI], 24.9-36.1) and patient satisfaction (-20.8 ± 0.2; 95% CI, -23.7 to -17.8) between treatments with conventional and implant-supported removable dentures was statistically significant (p < .05). Implant-supported removable dentures improved patients' overall quality of life and satisfaction. Some mechanical and biological complications, such as clasp adjustment, abutment or implant loosening, marginal bone resorption, and peri-implant mucositis, were noted in ISRPDs during patient follow-up. Studies assessing PROMs were very heterogeneous (I<sup>2</sup> = 65%, p = .85; I<sup>2</sup> = 75%, p = .88).CONCLUSIONS: ISRPDs significantly improved quality of life and patient satisfaction. Some mechanical and biological complications have been associated with ISRPDs treatment, requiring regular monitoring of patients to avoid the occurrence of these complications.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To investigate a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) process for producing one-piece removable partial dentures (RPDs) and to evaluate their fits in vitro.MATERIALS AND METHODS:A total of 15 one-piece RPDs were designed using dental CAD and reverse engineering software and then fabricated with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) using CAM. The gaps between RPDs and casts were measured and compared with traditional cast framework RPDs.RESULTS:Gaps were lower for one-piece PEEK RPDs compared to traditional RPDs.CONCLUSION:One-piece RPDs can be manufactured by CAD/CAM, and their fits were better than those of traditional RPDs.

Abstract:A general prescription to solve the Dirac equation in the presence of CP-violating electroweak bubble wall is presented. The profile of the bubble wall is not specified except that the wall height is $m_0$ and zero deep in the broken- and the symmetric-phase regions, respectively, where $m_0$ is a fermion mass given by the Higgs-vacuum-expectation value and the Yukawa coupling. The CP-violating effects are evaluated by regarding CP-violating part of the bubble wall as a perturbation to CP-conserving solutions. The basic quantity, $R_{R\rightarrow L}-\bar R_{R\rightarrow L}$, which would contribute to the cosmological baryon asymmetry, is estimated for some typical profiles of the wall, where $R_{R\rightarrow L}$($\bar R_{R\rightarrow L}$) is the reflection coefficient of right-handed chiral fermion (anti-fermion).
