Abstract:Cancer has been an important theme in literature, especially since the nineteenth century. Central dimensions of the frequent literary representations and interpretations of cancer are pathophenomenology, aetiology, diagnosis and therapy, image of the physician, subjectivity of the patient, medical institutions, social reactions and symbolism. The relationship between literature and medicine is a complex and reciprocal one marked by ontological differences. The long tradition of 'medical humanities' dating from ancient to present times is essential as human and humane medicine for the benefit and dignity of the suffering, sick and dying.

Abstract:Cancer is a relatively new subject for the discipline of anthropology, but scholarship on the topic has already yielded a distinct and important body of literature. In biomedical terms, cancer can be thought of as the wide range of conditions characterized by the uncontrolled (and ultimately pathological) proliferation of cells. It is a disease that is responsible for the deaths of millions of people worldwide each year. As such, it is the focus of a vast number of discourses and practices in multiple areas, ranging from scientific research and media discussion to health insurance and government regulation, to name just a few. Anthropologists concerned with cancer typically use the methodology that is a hallmark of the discipline, long-term ethnographic fieldwork, in order to investigate these discourses and practices. This involves conducting participant observation among doctors, patients, nurses, family members, scientists, politicians, policymakers, and pharmaceutical representatives. Cancer is examined as a lived experience, revealing the numerous ways that local, regional, national, and transnational histories and politics shape the embodied realities of disease. Anthropologists also investigate the regimes of risk and statistical analysis to which bodies are subjected and the technologies around cancer, such as methods of screening or vaccination that aim to prevent it and the different ways in which these and other interventions and technologies fit into—or push uneasily against—the local words in which they are implemented. Anthropologists aim to look beyond the problem as simply one of biology and medicine, instead investigating cancer as pervasive within multiple dimensions of social, cultural, political, and economic life. Anthropological studies displace the prominent biomedical notion that cancers are the same in diverse locations and reveal the incoherence and intractability of cancer as an object. In paying close attention to this object in varied settings, anthropologists offer a critical account of discourses and practices that destabilize and decenter some of the assumptions on which global oncology is based.

Abstract:The OED lists oncologia (a Latinization of Greek ογκολογία, ὄγκος + λόγια) as a dictionary term attested from 1860. The neoclassical term is much older, however. The neo-Greek term was used in the title of two seventeenth-century medical tracts on assorted tumors, first in a 1618 medical dissertation by Balthasar Simon. "Oncology" was more definitively established in Rudolf Virchow's Die krankhaften Geschwülste, a 1862/3 lecture series and trilogy on the subject.

Abstract:In a recent article titled "Embracing Cancer Complexity: Hallmarks of Systemic Disease" published in Cell, Swaton et al. propose the idea of cancer as a guest that develops within a host. They discuss the possible causes and events of neoplastic cell dysregulations within an organism, highlighting events such as cachexia and thrombosis. However, we believe that to understand cancer-associated phenomena better, cancer cannot be considered a guest. In reality, cancer is born, develops, and spreads within its environment. It does not come from outside but instead uses the same system in which it lives to promote its death plan. Indeed, today we know that cancer not only causes local symptoms in the affected organ but also leads to systemic symptoms, which are evidence of inflammation associated with cancer. Inflammation is vital in controlling oncogenesis and neoplastic proliferation during the resistance phase, which is a critical moment for the immune system to demonstrate its effectiveness. However, if the immune system causes immunopathological damage, it may lead to necrosis and eventually to the tolerance phase, which can result in systemic symptoms. Understanding these phenomena thoroughly explains thrombophilia, anemia, sarcopenia, and iron metabolism disruption in advanced-stage neoplastic patients. The concept of the microenvironment takes on a different meaning in this context. The same cells that should oppose cancer in the tolerance phase now participate in a process that self-maintains, favoring the growth of the cancer and its death plan. The exact knowledge of these mechanisms is a more modern translational approach to treating cancer and its related symptoms.

Abstract:The unravelling of the human genome created new perceptions of the origin and evolution of diseases, and for cancer in particular, it established the notion that neoplasia has been a companion of life since its appearance on Earth. It is not surprising that neoplasms, in various forms, develop in numerous species of animals and even in plants. Unmistakable accounts of cancer with clinical features as are understood today begin in the 5th c. B.C. The principles and practice of the Hippocratic and Galenic tradition dominated cancer care virtually into the 20th century. Advanced sequencing technologies at the dawn of the 21st century generated new therapeutic opportunities with immunotherapy, oncolytic virotherapy, and gene transfer, with the latter especially being used in cases of hereditary cancer.

Abstract:Cancer is often wrongly considered to be a modern disease in many popular medical venues. Cancers have been known to humanity since ancient times. In fact, its antiquity can be identified through the application of palaeopathological methodologies. The present perspective demonstrates by means of a historical and palaeopathological analysis how oncological manifestations were present long before the emergence of anatomically modern humans and addresses the epidemiological transition from ancient times to the contemporary world. The final section of the article examines breast cancer and its identification in ancient human remains.

Abstract:Eponyms have historically been used to honor individual contributions or discoveries in the field of medicine. More recently, some eponyms have been criticized for imprecision or for being misnomers. Eponyms attributed to discoveries made by Nazi German scientists have also fallen out of favor. However, despite these criticisms, eponyms remain popular for their ease of use. Eponyms generate interest in medical history and may help humanize the study of medicine. Here, we describe several eponyms in medical oncology with a focus on basic disease pathophysiology, epidemiology, and brief background on the individuals for whom the eponym was named.

Abstract:Cancer, a pervasive and multifaceted disease, has afflicted humanity since ancient times, as evidenced by early references in the Edwin Smith Papyrus and the Ebers Papyrus. Over centuries, our understanding and treatment of cancer have evolved significantly, transitioning from rudimentary remedies to advanced modalities like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and precision medicine. Despite these advancements, cancer remains a major global health challenge. As of 2022, nearly 20 million new cancer cases and 10 million cancer-related deaths were reported worldwide. In India, the situation is particularly dire, with over 1.41 million new cases and more than 916,827 deaths in 2022, exacerbated by socioeconomic disparities, cultural stigmas, and healthcare barriers. This review traces the historical evolution of cancer treatment from ancient civilizations to modern times, highlighting key medical milestones and breakthroughs. It examines the global and Indian cancer burden, emphasizing the critical barriers to early diagnosis and effective treatment. These barriers include health system deficiencies, socioeconomic challenges, delayed diagnosis, low health literacy, and inadequate screening programs. The review was conducted through a comprehensive literature search using databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Journal Storage (JSTOR), and various other sources focusing on historical texts, epidemiological studies, and current medical research. The search aimed to gather a broad spectrum of perspectives and evidence to provide a well-rounded understanding of cancer's historical journey and current landscape.

Abstract:In the 3 decades from 1910 to 1940, more progress took place in cancer research and the diagnosis and treatment of cancers than during the prior centuries combined. The discovery of several carcinogens, precancerous conditions, and hereditary cancers adduced new thoughts about the genesis of cancers. Even though diagnostic radiology and radiation therapy became apposite specialties, surgery retained its primacy in the treatment of cancer patients. The delineation of new and distinct neoplastic entities, several precancerous lesions, and noninvasive carcinomas as well as the introduction of histopathologic grading of cancers promulgated cogent changes in therapy. Yet, with all the advances in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers, very little betterment could be demonstrated in the overall survival of patients, and by the end of the 1930s, cancer became the second most common cause of death in the United States.

Abstract:Purpose: Novels and autopathographies that employ cancer as a central theme offer a wealth of opportunities for researching the way patients with cancer make sense of their illness and its treatment. Such literatures can also inform clinical care, because they can support patients in living with their illness. The use of novels and autopathographies for research and care in persons with cancer fits within the framework of 'Health Humanities', the interdisciplinary field where medicine and social science meet. This paper presents a concise overview of novels and autopathographies that explore cancer as their theme. Methods: Literature searches were conducted using PubMed, major scientific journals of medicine and clinical oncology, and databases in the Health Humanities. Searches focused on novels and autopathographies where cancer is the central theme, which are available in English, and which can be considered to represent 'high literature'. Results: Twenty-nine books were identified. The majority of the books were written originally in English, and breast cancer and lung cancer were the most frequently discussed types of cancer. The core themes identified were giving meaning to illness; coping with medical treatment; and the psychological and social consequences of illness. Conclusion: Novels and autopathographies about cancer represent an innovative base for research on living with cancer and offer rich data on how people make sense of cancer and its medical treatment. Clinical implications of this review pertain to interventions based on bibliotherapy and expressive writing. Novels and autopathographies are just part of the Health Humanities context: a wide range of art genres may prove helpful in improving the quality of life of persons with cancer.

Abstract:Diagnosis and treatment of disease demand a sound understanding of the underlying mechanisms, determining any Achilles' heel that can be targeted in effective therapies. Throughout history, this endeavour to decipher the origin and mechanism of transformation of a normal cell into cancer has led to various theories—from cancer as a curse to an understanding at the level of single-cell heterogeneity, meaning even among a single sub-type of cancer there are myriad molecular challenges to overcome. With increasing insight into cancer genetics and biology, the disease has become ever more complex to understand. The complexity of cancer as a disease was distilled into key traits by Hanahan and Weinberg in their seminal ‘Hallmarks of Cancer' reviews. This lucid conceptualization of complex cancer biology is widely accepted and has helped advance cancer therapeutics by targeting the various hallmarks but, with the advancement in technologies, there is greater granularity in how we view cancer as a disease, and the additional understanding over the past decade requires us to revisit the hallmarks of cancer. Based on extensive study of the cancer research literature, we propose four novel hallmarks of cancer, namely, the ability of cells to regress from a specific specialized functional state, epigenetic changes that can affect gene expression, the role of microorganisms and neuronal signalling, to be included in the hallmark conceptualization along with evidence of various means to exploit them therapeutically.

Abstract:The current dogma in cancer biology contends that cancer is an identity problem: mutations in a cell's DNA cause it to "go rogue" and proliferate out of control. However, this largely ignores the role of cell-cell interaction and fails to explain phenomena such as cancer reversion, the existence of cancers without mutations, and foreign-body carcinogenesis. In this proof-of-concept paper, we draw on criminology to propose that cancer may alternatively be conceptualized as a relational problem: Although a cell's genetics is essential, the influence of its interaction with other cells is equally important in determining its phenotype. We create a simple agent-based network model of interactions among normal and cancer cells to demonstrate this idea. We find that both high mutation rates and low levels of connectivity among cells can promote oncogenesis. Viewing cancer as a breakdown in communication networks among cells in a tissue complements the gene-centric paradigm nicely and provides a novel perspective for understanding and treating cancer.

Abstract:This article presents and interprets illness narratives, told by patients treated for cancer. The aim is to discuss the meaning of cancer metaphors. The interpretation focuses on the relationships of metaphors to bodily experience and to social and cultural levels. The experience of cancer and cancer therapy obviously involve the patient's body. To comprehend what is happening is a process full of uncertainty and obscurity. Metaphors, such as cancer "eating," are widespread and persistent while the meaning of that metaphor today mirrors new scientific and lay explanations of cancer and cancer treatment. Personal newly created metaphors express threatening experiences in which fear of losing oneself and fear of death are involved. Ambivalent hope in relation to treatment and caregivers is expressed. Creating new metaphors involves imaginatively using the available concepts and metaphors. Narrative communication gives access to patients' experiences of an unwanted and painful physiologic process leading to forced embodiment of sickness. Patients want consolation and must overcome solitude by articulating experience, being listened to, and, in this way, recreating and strengthening identity.

Abstract:Identifying species with unusually low cancer prevalence can provide new insights into cancer resistance. Most studies have focused on mammals, but the genetic, physiological, and ecological diversity among vertebrates can influence cancer susceptibility. We used necropsies from over a thousand species of amphibians, birds, crocodilians, mammals, squamates, and turtles to investigate relationships between cancer prevalence, intrinsic cancer risk, body mass, and lifespan. Previous studies often relied on species averages, leading to inaccurate interpretations. Our innovative statistical approach uses raw cancer data and resampling to improve accuracy. We found remarkably low cancer prevalence in turtles, high prevalence in squamates and mammals, and lower-than-expected prevalence based on lifespan and body mass in multiple groups. Our results show lifespan influences neoplasia and malignancy transformation rates in mammals, while body mass affects neoplasia prevalence in amphibians and squamates. These data reveal a complex relationship between life history traits and cancer risk, identifying vertebrates with potential novel cancer resistance mechanisms.

Abstract:Cancer is an inevitable collateral problem inherent in the evolution of multicellular organisms, which appeared at the end of the Precambrian. Faced to this constraint, a range of diverse anticancer defenses has evolved across the animal kingdom. Today, investigating how animal organisms, especially those of large size and long lifespan, manage cancer-related issues has both fundamental and applied outcomes, as it could inspire strategies for preventing or treating human cancers. In this article, we begin by presenting the conceptual framework for understanding evolutionary theories regarding the development of anti-cancer defenses. We then present a number of examples that have been extensively studied in recent years, including naked mole rats, elephants, whales, placozoa, xenarthras (such as sloths, armadillos and anteaters) and bats. The contributions of comparative genomics to understanding evolutionary convergences are also discussed. Finally, we emphasize that natural selection has also favored anti-cancer adaptations aimed at avoiding mutagenic environments, for example by maximizing immediate reproductive efforts in the event of cancer. Exploring these adaptive solutions holds promise for identifying novel approaches to improve human health.

Abstract:The Nobel Prize originated in 1895 when Alfred Nobel signed his will, leaving a large part of his wealth to the creation of the Nobel Foundation and the establishment of this prize, with the vision that people could help improve humanity through knowledge, science, and humanism. The Nobel Prize has been awarded in areas such as physics, physiology or medicine, chemistry, literature, peace, and economics. 943 people and 25 organizations have been awarded since 1901 to this day. The history and knowledge commemorated in the Nobel Prize have allowed an integral development in the understanding, diagnosis, therapy, and scientific progress in different types of cancer, laying the foundations and being the inspiration for thousands of scientists worldwide who work hard in the area of oncology. GLOBOCAN estimates indicated that there were approximately 19 million new cancer cases globally and almost 10 million cancer deaths in 2020 alone; hence, this study reviews and brings together the main scientific discoveries awarded with the Nobel Prize in the area of physiology or medicine and chemistry, which contributed to the knowledge, diagnosis and/or treatment of cancer from 1901 to 2021.
