Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nano-rod thin film was successfully synthesized via hydrothermal method on fluorine doped tinoxide (FTO) coated transparent conductive glass substrate. Then, three donor-acceptor polymers based on 2, 1, 3-benzothiadiazole or perylenediimide have been electropolymerized on TiO2 nano-film to form organic-inorganic hybrid films. XRD, FTIR and SEM characterizations confirm the coupling of polymer and TiO2 nano-film, and the hybrid films present loose and porous morphology. After investigating the electrochromic properties of these hybrid films, the results indicate that the composite films display similar optical absorption with the pure polymer films, while improved switching response and stability of these hybrid films have been achieved. These improved electrochromic properties can be attributed to the formation of the donor-acceptor system, and loose, porous morphology of the nanocomposite, which will induce fast ion diffusion and provide large surface area for charge–transfer reactions.

Abstract:In this article, we report the facile synthesis of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonic acid)/titanium dioxide (PEDOT:PSS/TiO2) nanocomposite film by sol–gel assisted electropolymerization. The structure, morphology and composition of the films were investigated by different techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The PEDOT:PSS/TiO2 nanocomposite film was applied for electrochromic application. The results indicate that the PEDOT:PSS/TiO2 nanocomposite film exhibits a higher optical contrast and a much better stability as compared to PEDOT:PSS film. The significant performance enhancement can be attributed to the nanoscale particle size and uniform size distribution of PEDOT:PSS/TiO2 and the synergistic effect between the inorganic nano-TiO2 and organic PEDOT:PSS material.

Abstract:The TiO2@PANI core/shell nanorod array is prepared by the combination of hydrothermal and electro-polymerization methods. A significant optical modulation (57.6% at 700 nm), high coloration efficiency (37.1 cm2 C–1), and good cycling performance (62.1% after 1000 cycles) are achieved for the TiO2@PANI core/shell nanorod array. The improved electrochromic properties are mainly attributed to the core/shell structure, formation of the donor–acceptor system, and the porous space among the nanorods, which can reduce the oxidation potential, make the ion diffusion easier and provide larger surface area for charge-transfer reactions. The data indicate great promise for the TiO2@PANI core/shell nanorod array as a potential multicolor electrochromic material.
In‐situ preparation and electrochromic properties of TiO 2 / PTPA‐HTAN core‐shell nanocomposite film

Abstract:Abstract A new star‐shaped structure conjugated microporous polymers, poly (2,8,14‐tri[4‐diphenyl‐benzene]‐hexaazatrinaphthylene) (PTPA‐HATN), was designed and in‐situ electrochemically polymerized on the surfaces of FTO electrodes with a directional alignment TiO 2 nanorod array to obtain TiO 2 /PTPA‐HATN core‐shell nanocomposite films. Compared with the PTPA‐HATN film, the TiO 2 /PTPA‐HATN composite film exhibits higher optical contrast and faster response time, with contrast of 57% at 783 nm, coloring time of 3.62 s and discoloring time of 2.55 s (43%, 4.63 s and 4.77 s for PTPA‐HATN film, respectively). After 400 cycles, the contrast of nanocomposite film decreased by 28%, while the PTPA‐HATN film basically lost its electrochromic properties. A simple three‐layer EC prototype device based on TiO 2 /PTPA‐HATN nanocomposite film constructed with hydrogel electrolyte clearly shows color changes at different voltages. On the one hand, the formation of core‐shell porous nanostructure of TiO 2 /PTPA‐HATN composite film provides a larger ion doping/de‐doping interface, shortening the average diffusion length of ions. On the other hand, the large indented polymer‐nanorods contact interface makes it difficult for the polymer to detach from the electrode, thus significantly improving the cyclic stability of the composite film.

Preparation of Multicolor Electrochromic Polymer Composite Film with Laminated Structure

Abstract:Two electrochromic polymers , poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) ( PEDOT) and poly { 4 , 4' , 4 "-tris [4-(2-bithienyl) pheny ] amine } ( PTBTPA) with different neutral absorption spectra and the complementary colors were synthesized via electrochemical polymerization method , respectively. Then the composite film with the laminated structure was controllably prepared by adjusting the electrochemical polymerization parameters. FTIR spectra and SEM images indicate that the laminated composite film is obtained. UV-Vis spectra and electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the composite film exhibits a noticeable electrochromism with reversible color changes from orange , blue to dark green, and maintains good electrochemical activity and optical contrast compared to those of the pristine PTBTPA film and PEDOT film. This work is to provide a simple and efficient method to build the laminated composite structure for achieving multicolor or even full-color electrochromic materials , which is also suitable for other electrochromic polymer systems.
In Situ Preparation and Determination of Electrochemical and Electrochromic Properties of Copper Phthalocyanine-Polyaniline Nanocomposite Films

Abstract:Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) films with different morphologies were electrodeposited on the surfaces of ITO electrodes. Then, in each case, a polyaniline (PANI) film was electrochemically polymerized in situ on the surface of the copper phthalocyanine film to form a CuPc-PANI composite film. The electrochemical properties of the CuPc-PANI composite film were observed to be much better than those of the film without CuPc. With the modification involving the CuPc nanowires, the composite film formed a finer particle surface and an increased interface area between the PANI and the electrolyte. Compared to the single-component PANI film, the CuPc-PANI composite film exhibited better performance with a higher optical contrast (58% at 730 nm), a faster response speed (coloring time of 1.02 s, discoloring time of 1.96 s), and better cycling stability (68.71% of the initial electrochemical activity after 500 cycles, in contrast to only about 48.02% for PANI). Moreover, the CuPc-PANI film shows a new feature that can be used as a supercapacitor (specifically a capacitance value of about 5.4 mF cm(-2) at typical currents). Our results demonstrate that the prepared CuPc-PANI composite film is one of the best candidates for multiple potential applications such as high-performance polymer electrochromic materials and supercapacitors.

Abstract:As an electrochromic material, NiO has a distinct color conversion, but its single color variation limits its application. In this study, NiO-based multi-color electrochromic films were prepared by using simple hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. The composite electrochromic film can achieve a variety of color changes in yellow, green, blue and dark brown. NiO provides the substrate for organic copolymers, bringing large contact areas and ion channels, while the copolymerization and recombination of aniline-o-toluidine copolymers achieve a series of rich color changes. The results show that five color changes from colorless to dark brown can be achieved between −1 and 1.5 V. By controlling the applied voltage and the transition between the redox states of the film, the composite film is yellow at 0.2 V, green at 0.5 V, blue at 0.8 V, and dark brown at 1.5 V. The composite film has unprecedented stability. The improvement of cyclic stability is attributed to the uniform and dense coating of nickel oxide on the surface after being combined with copolymer. This encapsulation form will affect the ions entering the deep layer of NiO, reduce the erosion of NiO, and improve the cycling stability of NiO to a certain extent. This is fully demonstrated by the cyclic stability test. After 1000 cycles, the composite film can still show excellent optical modulation range. This study provides reference for the development of NiO multi-color electrochromic materials.

Abstract:Electrochromic processes are mostly characterized by colour change arising from the energy of a chemical reaction involving electron transfer. Transition metal oxides of tungsten, molybdenum, iridium, and nickel show the most intense Electrochromic colour changes and photochemical stability of about 100 cycles compared to organic electrochromes which are susceptible to photochemical degradation. The prospect of conjugated polymers (comprising of metal oxides and polymers) has opened a new dimension on improving the Electrochromic performance of the transition metal oxides. In this work, solution growth methods were employed in preparing a MoO3/PEDOT: PSS composite layer by adding PEDOT: PSS into MoO3 aqueous dispersion resulting in an electrostatic interaction between MoO3 and PEDOT: PSS for electrochromic application. This composite has shown a long-term stability up to more than 550 cycles which shows higher potential specific capacitance than WO3/PEDOT: PSS. This approach has significantly improved the stability issue of MoO3 and enhances the potential of MoO3-based materials for electrochromic applications. The semi crystalline nature of MoO3-300 °C was further proved by FE-SEM observation of the MoO3 nanoparticles. The particle size shown in the images corresponds with FE-SEM result and polycrystalline structure was observed under high magnification. The polycrystalline nature of the MoO3 particles favors their electrochemical stability, while their small size facilitates their effective interactions with PEDOT: PSS. The electrochemical properties of MoO3, PEDOT: PSS and composite were further studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) from -1 V to +1 V. MoO3 has a broad oxidation peak at -0.43 V and no obvious reduction peak in this range. PEDOT: PSS has an oxidation peak at -0.02 V and a reduction peak at -0.55 V. In the composite, the peak at -0.43 V becomes a shoulder and a new pair of redox peaks appear at -0.18 V/-0.09 V.

Abstract:Functional Materials Letters, Ahead of Print. Fabrication of electrochromic films with micro/nanostructures is one of the most feasible ways to improve their properties for high-performance electrochromic devices (ECDs). In this work, mesoporous TiO2 and NiO electrochromic films are prepared by sol-gel technique with an auxiliary solvent of F108 (PEO[math]PPO[math]PEO[math]). By adjusting the content of F108 and heat treatment temperature, the transparent and uniform mesoporous films are successfully prepared. The TiO2 and NiO films are composed of inter-connected nanoparticles with a size of about 20 nm. The thicknesses of the films are about 300 nm and the mesoporous sizes are about 13 nm. The films have a short response time during the electrochromic process. When supplied with positive/negative voltages for 50 s, the coloring/bleaching times of TiO2 and NiO mesoporous films are 15/13 and 17/12 s, respectively. The ECD fabricated with TiO2 and NiO mesoporous films shows good electrochromic properties: short response time (14/19 s, for bleaching/coloring time), wide transmittance modulation range ([math]37.21% at 540 nm), high coloration efficiency (CE) (100.6 cm2/C at 540 nm) and outstanding cycle stability (800 cycles). These are attributed to the mesoporous channels of films, which can increase reaction activity site, shorten ions transport path, and thus improve electrochromic reaction.

Synthesis and Electrochemical Properties of a Novel Poly(ether Sulfone) with Oligoaniline Pendants

Abstract:A novel poly(ether sulfone) with oligoaniline pendants(PESOP) was prepared by K 2 CO 3 -mediated nucleophilic polycondensation and characterized with Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry(FTIR), 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance( 1 H NMR) and gel permeation chromatography(GPC). The cyclic voltammetry(CV) curve of PESOP reveals the reversible electroactivity. In the electrochromism study, PESOP film exhibited good electrochromic properties with a high contrast value, moderate switching time and acceptable coloration efficiency. After running 1000 cycles, the PESOP/indium-tin oxide(ITO) electrochromic device remained unchanged except for the drifting of base line, which certified its good electro-photo stability of the fabricated electrochromic device. Moreover, the polarization technique and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) were used to study the anticorrosion performance of PESOP coatings on the cold rolled steel(CRS) in a 5%(mass fraction) NaCl solution. All the results indicate that the obtained PESOP is a competitive candidate as anticorrosion material.
Enhanced Electrochromic Properties of TiO2 Nanoporous Film Prepared Based on an Assistance of Polyethylene Glycol

Abstract:Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was employed as pore-forming agent to prepare TiO2 nanoporous film based on spin-coating a TiO2 nanoparticle mixed paste on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) glass. The electrochromic and optical properties of the obtained TiO2 film were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA) and UV–Vis spectrophotometer. The results show that the PEG in the mixed paste endows the TiO2 film with well-developed porous structure and improves the uniformity of the TiO2 film, which are helpful for the rapid intercalation and extraction of lithium ions within the TiO2 film and the strengthening of the diffuse reflection of visible light in the TiO2 film. As a result, the TiO2 film derived from the mixed paste with PEG displays higher electrochemical activity and more excellent electrochromic performances compared with the TiO2 film derived from the mixed paste without PEG. The switching times of coloration/bleaching are respectively 10.16/5.65 and 12.77/6.13 s for the TiO2 films with PEG and without PEG. The maximum value of the optical contrast of the TiO2 film with PEG is 21.2% while that of the optical contrast of the TiO2 film without PEG is 14.9%. Furthermore, the TiO2 film with PEG has better stability of the colored state than the TiO2 film without PEG.

Abstract:An electrochromic copolymer based on pyrrole and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) are electrodeposited on ITO electrode in aqueous micellar solution. The copolymer show blue grey in neutral state (-0.8V) and light blue in oxidized state(0.8V). The λmax of the copolymer in neutral state is 530nm and the onset energy for π-π* transition (Eg) is calculated to be 1.68eV by the onset wavelength. And successive cycle voltammagrams indicate that the incorporation of EDOT units into the Ppy improves the electrochemical stability of the copolymer films, which retains 89% of electroactivity after 500 cycles, the copolymer could be as a promising candidate material for electrochromic devices.

Abstract:Composite thin films of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-enwrapped functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been synthesized over multiple length scales by electropolymerization of the monomer without the use of any other supporting electrolyte. The functionalized MWCNTs are incorporated into the positively charged polymer deposit as counterions during oxidative electropolymerization. The morphology, electrochemistry, and electrochromism of the PEDOT-MWCNT films have been compared with those of control PEDOT films doped by triflate ions. Such a comparison enabled us to demonstrate the profound effect of MWCNTs as counterions, realized in terms of better electropolymerization rate, higher conductivity, faster color-bleach kinetics, higher charge storage capacity, and substantially amplified coloration efficiency (eta = 414 cm(2) C(-1), lambda(max) = 575 nm, E = -1.5 V) in comparison to the values of eta reported to date for PEDOT. The strong interaction between the polymer and MWCNTs, the interconnected nanotubular structures, and the porous framework of the film allow facile charge transport and larger ion uptake during redox switching. Electrochemical investigations on devices based on PEDOT-MWCNT and control PEDOT films established the practical utility of PEDOT-MWCNT films as they show lower charge-transfer resistance, higher diffusional capacitance, and a much smaller amplitude of impedance as compared to control PEDOT films.

Abstract:The electrochromic characteristics of titanium oxide films prepared by reactive thermal evaporation and ion-assisted deposition have been investigated. It is found that their properties depend on the deposition and post-annealing process, and there is slight conflict between charge capacity and cyclic stability. With a compromise, a TiO2 film with above 7.6 mC cm(-2) Li+ ion capacity and above 10(6) color/bleach cycles is gained. The film is deposited at 50 similar to 80 degrees C substrate temperature and 250 similar to 260 degrees C post-annealing in an oxidizing atmosphere. With the post-annealed TiO2 film as the counter electrode, durable electrochromic devices, glass/ITO/TiO2/PPG-PMMA-LiClO4/WOx/ITO, are obtained. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
Nanocomposites of Fe(II)-Based Metallo-Supramolecular Polymer and a Layered Inorganic-Organic Hybrid for Improved Electrochromic Materials

Abstract:Fe-based metallo-supramolecular polymer (polyFe), composed of Fe(II) ions and bis(terpyridyl)benzene, is known as a good electrochromic (EC) material. For the first time, to improve the EC properties, we prepared nanocomposites comprising polyFe and a layered inorganic-imidazoline covalently bonded hybrid (LIIm) by simply mixing them in methanol and then examined the effect of the nanocomposition on EC properties. The obtained blue/purple-colored composites (polyFe/LIIm composites) were demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to comprise a structure of LIIm nanoparticles coated with amorphous polyFe. Interestingly, X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements suggested that there was no intercalation of polyFe in the interlayer space of LIIm. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy measurements demonstrated that light absorption close to 600 nm was attributed to metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) from the Fe(II) ion to the bisterpyridine ligand and was influenced by LIIm in the composites. The composites exhibited a pair of redox waves, assigned to the redox between Fe(II) and Fe(III), in the cyclic voltammograms; moreover, the composites were estimated to be diffusion controlled. Thin composite films demonstrated reversible EC changes, triggered by the redox reaction of the metal. Furthermore, the results show that the nano-scale composition of the metallo-supramolecular polymers with LIIm can effectively improve the memory properties without reducing the contrast in transmittance (ΔT) of 70-76% in EC changes after applying 1.2 V vs. Ag/Ag+. The EC properties varied with varying ratios (3/0.1, 0.5, 1, and 5) of the polyFe/LIIm, and the ratio of 3/1 exhibited the longest memory and largest MLCT absorption peak among composites. The results show that the polyFe/LIIm composites are useful EC materials for dimming glass applications, such as smart windows.
Electrochemical Polymerization and Electrochromic Properties of Poly(3-methoxythiophene)/NiO Composite Films

Abstract:Poly(3-methoxythiophene)/NiO (PMOT/NiO) composite films were electrochemically synthesized on a ITO surface in the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-metyllimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM]PF6) by a potentiodynamic polymerization method. The PMOT/NiO composite films were characterized by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis(EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemistry properties of the prepared film was characterized by cyclic voltammetry. Spectroelectrochemistry and electrochromic properties of the PMOT/NiO composite were characterized using various experiment techniques in [BMIM]PF6.

The influences of the electrolyte ions, film morphologies and counter electrode on the electrochromism of the devices are explored by UV–Vis transmittance spectra and cyclic voltammetry tests. With the aim to enhance the contrast optical transmittance, we develop the binary composite electrolytes of LiClO4 and N(C4H9)4ClO4 solution which can promote intercalation/deintercalation process. Besides that, we use polyethylene oxide as pore-forming agent on the polythiophene–WO3 films, so that it will be easier for electrolyte ions to diffuse in the porous film. A NiO layer also has a complementary effect on the cathodic coloration films and increases the contrast optical transmittance remarkably. Equipped with the binary electrolyte and the NiO layer as the counter electrode, the film device exhibits high performance with the contrast optical transmittance (ΔT) of 62 % and the coloration efficiency of 212.6 cm2/C.

Abstract:A highly porous NiO/polyaniline (PANI) composite film was prepared on ITO glass by combining the chemical bath deposition and electro-polymerization methods, successively. The porous NiO film acts as a template for the preferential growth of PANI along NiO flakes, and the NiO/PANI composite film has an intercrossing net-like morphology. The electrochromic performance of the NiO/PANI composite film was investigated in 1 M LiClO4 + 1 mM HClO4/propylene carbonate ( PC) by means of transmittance, cyclic voltammetry ( CV) and chronoamperometry ( CA) measurements. The NiO/PANI thin film exhibits a noticeable electrochromism with reversible color changes from transparent yellow to purple and presents quite good transmittance modulation with a variation of transmittance up to 56% at 550 nm. The porous NiO/polyaniline ( PANI) composite film also shows good reaction kinetics with fast switching speed, and the response time for oxidation and reduction is 90 and 110 ms, respectively.

Abstract:We report a nanoporous NiO/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) composite film using a highly porous NiO film as a template by the combination of chemical bath deposition and electro-polymerization methods. The as-prepared NiO/PEDOT composite film has an interconnecting reticular morphology with nanometer sized pores ranging from 20–150nm. The NiO/PEDOT composite film exhibits multicolor electrochromism with reversible color changes from purple to light blue brown and presents a transmittance variation of 31% at 600nm. Fast switching speed is achieved in this composite film, and the response time for oxidation and reduction is 500 and 600ms, respectively.
