Abstract:Lead (Pb) pollution is a growing environment problem that continuously threatens the productivity of crops. To understand the molecular mechanisms of plant adaptation to Pb toxicity, we examined proteome changes in Arabidopsis seedlings following Pb treatment by SWATH-MS, a label-free quantitative proteomic platform. We identified and quantified the expression of 1719 proteins in water- and Pb-treated plants. Among them, 231 proteins showed significant abundance changes (151 elevated and 80 reduced) upon Pb exposure. Functional categorization revealed that most of the Pb-responsive proteins are involved in different metabolic processes. For example, down-regulation of photosynthesis and biosynthesis of isoprenoids and tetrapyrroles in chloroplasts were observed. On the contrary, pathways leading to glutathione, jasmonic acid (JA), glucosinolate (GSL), and phenylpropanoid production are up-regulated. Experimental characterizations demonstrated a rapid elevation of endogenic JA production in Pb-treated Arabidopsis seedlings, while a JA-deficient mutant and a JA-insensitive mutant showed hypersensitivity to root inhibition by Pb, implicating an essential role of JA during Pb responses. Consistently, methyl jasmonate supplementation alleviated Pb toxicity in the wild-type and JA-deficient mutant. Furthermore, GSL levels were substantially enhanced following Pb treatment, while such induction was not detected in the JA mutant, suggesting that the Pb-induced GSL accumulation is JA-dependent. Overall, our work represents the first SWATH-MS analysis in Arabidopsis and highlights a potential mediating role of JA during Pb stress.

Abstract:Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was used as a bioprobe to estimation chlorophyll, total sugar, proline, and metallothionein (MT) response to Pb 2+ (0, 1, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, and 20 mg/l) in Cladophora rupestris . Spectra between 3775.94 and 12315.19 cm −1 were analysed using a partial least-squares regression (PLS). Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed by evaluating the distance between the C. rupestris samples treated with different concentrations of Pb 2+ . Results showed that 4000–7500 cm −1 of raw NIR spectra from C. rupestris was linked to carbohydrates and stretching of N–H, and the O–H overtone was associated with proline and MT. NIR spectroscopy technique coupled with PLS quantitative analysis model has high potential Multiplicative scatter correction and standard normal variate combining first-order derivative with S-G smoothing filter are superior to the other models. The root mean square error of cross of chlorophyll, total sugar, proline, and MT was 0–1, indicating the accuracy of the model is high. The R c 2 values of chlorophyll, total soluble sugar, proline, and MT between measured and predicted values were higher than 0.99. PCA analysis indicate clear boundaries in the spatial distributions of seven Pb 2+ concentrations, indicating that NIR spectroscopy has high potential as a tool assisting bioprobes for estimating metabolites' responses to Pb 2+ in Cladophora rupestris .

Effects of Pb(Ⅱ) exposure on Chlorella protothecoides and Chlorella vulgaris growth, malondialdehyde, and photosynthesis-related gene transcription

Abstract:Greater exposure to Pb(Ⅱ) increases the likelihood of harmful effects in the environment. In this study, the aquatic unicellular alga Chlorella protothecoides (C. protothecoides) and Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) were chosen to assess the acute and chronic toxicity of Pb(Ⅱ) exposure. Results of the observations show dose-response relationships could be clearly observed between Pb(Ⅱ) concentration and percentage inhibition (PI). Exposure to Pb(Ⅱ) increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content by up to 4.22 times compared with the control, suggesting that there was some oxidative damage. ANOVA analysis shows that Pb(Ⅱ) decreased chlorophyll (chl) content, indicating marked concentration-dependent relationships, and the lowest levels of chl a, chl b, and total-chl were 14.53, 18.80, and 17.95% of the controls, respectively. A real-time PCR assay suggests the changes in transcript abundances of three photosynthetic-related genes. After 120 h exposure Pb(Ⅱ) reduced the transcript abundance of rbcL, psaB, and psbC, and the relative abundances of the three genes of C. protothecoides and C. vulgaris in response to Pb(Ⅱ) were 54.66-98.59, 51.68-95.59, 37.89-95.48, 36.04-94.94, 41.19-91.20, and 58.75-96.80% of those of the controls, respectively. As for 28 d treatments, the three genes displayed similar inhibitory trend. This research provides a basic understanding of Pb(Ⅱ) toxicity to aquatic organisms.

Abstract:In aquatic ecosystems, dissolved organic matter (DOM) enhances the adsorption of heavy metals onto microalgae by participating in the formation of algae–heavy metal–DOM ternary complexes, thereby increasing environmental risks. The functional groups in the DOM play a crucial role. However, a quantitative description based on these groups is lacking. This study investigates the effects of amino acids (AAs) with varying functional group ratios on the accumulation of lead (Pb) in Chlorella pyrenoidosa ( C. pyrenoidosa ) using batch experiments. Isotherm model fitting, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) are employed for characterisation. Results indicate that the addition of AAs facilitated Pb enrichment in microalgae. In particular, incorporating lysine (Lys) led to maximum accumulation, reaching 1.45 mmol g −1 . The adsorption rate decreased after AA addition, particularly with Lys, dropping form 0.0032 g mg −1 min −1 to 0.0009 g mg −1 min −1 . The reaction sequence showed carboxyl groups taking precedence over amino groups. The model developed from the data on Pb adsorption by C. pyrenoidosa following AA addition, demonstrated reliability with an R 2 of 0.91 and an F -value of 157.6. Notably this study employed two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D–COS), offering novel insights into the key roles of functional groups and their distinct contributions. These valuable insights contribute to intensive research on the ternary complex of algae − heavy metal − DOM and elucidating their ecological risks.

Abstract:In our study, the feasibility of using visible/near infrared hyperspectral imaging technology to detect the changes of the internal components of Chlorella pyrenoidosa so as to determine the varieties of pesticides (such as butachlor, atrazine and glyphosate) at three concentrations (0.6 mg/L, 3 mg/L, 15 mg/L) was investigated. Three models (partial least squares discriminant analysis combined with full wavelengths, FW-PLSDA; partial least squares discriminant analysis combined with competitive adaptive reweighted sampling algorithm, CARS-PLSDA; linear discrimination analysis combined with regression coefficients, RC-LDA) were built by the hyperspectral data of Chlorella pyrenoidosa to find which model can produce the most optimal result. The RC-LDA model, which achieved an average correct classification rate of 97.0% was more superior than FW-PLSDA (72.2%) and CARS-PLSDA (84.0%), and it proved that visible/near infrared hyperspectral imaging could be a rapid and reliable technique to identify pesticide varieties. It also proved that microalgae can be a very promising medium to indicate characteristics of pesticides.

Abstract:Tea plants that have a large leaf area mainly suffer from heavy metal accumulation in the above-ground parts through foliar uptake. With the world rapid industrialization, this pollution in tea is considered a crucial challenge due to its potential health risks. The present study proposes an innovative approach based on visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics for the characterization of tea chemical indicators under airborne lead stress, which can be performed fast and in situ. The effects of lead stress on chemical indicators and accumulation in leaves of the two tea varieties at different time intervals and levels of treatment were investigated. In addition, changes in cell structure and leaf stomata were monitored during foliar uptake of aerosol particles by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The spectral variation was able to classify the tea samples into the Pb treatment groups through the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) model. Two machine learning techniques, namely, partial least squares (PLS) and radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), were evaluated and compared for building the quantitative determination models. The RBFNN models combined with correlation-based feature selection (CFS) and PLS data compression methods were used to optimize the prediction performance. The results demonstrated that the PLS-RBFNN as a non-linear model outperformed the PLS model and provided the R-value of 0.944, 0.952, 0.881, 0.937, and 0.930 for prediction of MDA, starch, sucrose, fructose, glucose, respectively. It can be concluded that the proposed approach has strong application potential in monitoring the quality and safety of plants under airborne heavy metal stress.

Increased Steady-State Mutant Huntingtin mRNA in Huntington's Disease Brain.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Huntington's disease is caused by expansion of CAG trinucleotide repeats in the first exon of the huntingtin gene, which is essential for both development and neurogenesis. Huntington's disease is autosomal dominant. The normal allele contains 6 to 35 CAG triplets (average, 18) and the mutant, disease-causing allele contains >36 CAG triplets (average, 42). OBJECTIVE We examined 279 postmortem brain samples, including 148 HD and 131 non-HD controls. A total of 108 samples from 87 HD patients that are heterozygous at SNP rs362307, with a normal allele (18 to 27 CAG repeats) and a mutant allele (39 to 73 CAG repeats) were used to measure relative abundance of mutant and wild-type huntingtin mRNA. METHODS We used allele-specific, quantitative RT-PCR based on SNP heterozygosity to estimate the relative amount of mutant versus normal huntingtin mRNA in postmortem brain samples from patients with Huntington's disease. RESULTS In the cortex and striatum, the amount of mRNA from the mutant allele exceeds that from the normal allele in 75% of patients. In the cerebellum, no significant difference between the two alleles was evident. Brain tissues from non-HD controls show no significant difference between two alleles of huntingtin mRNAs. Allelic differences were more pronounced at early neuropathological grades (grades 1 and 2) than at late grades (grades 3 and 4). CONCLUSION More mutant HTT than normal could arise from increased transcription of mutant HTT allele, or decreased clearance of mutant HTT mRNA, or both. An implication is that equimolar silencing of both alleles would increase the mutant HTT to normal HTT ratio.
Interrogating Cadmium and Lead Biosorption Mechanisms by Simplicillium Chinense Via Infrared Spectroscopy.

Abstract:Fungi-associated phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly and cost-efficient approach to remove potential toxic elements (PTEs) from contaminated soils. Many fungal strains have been reported to possess PTE-biosorption behaviour which benefits phytoremediation performance. Nevertheless, most studies are limited in rich or defined medium, far away from the real-world scenarios where nutrients are deficient. Understanding fungal PTE-biosorption performance and influential factors in soil environment can expand their application potential and is urgently needed. This study applied attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) coupled with phenotypic microarrays to study the biospectral alterations of a fungal strain Simplicillium chinense QD10 and explore the mechanisms of Cd and Pb biosorption. Both Cd and Pb were efficiently adsorbed by S. chinense QD10 cultivated with 48 different carbon sources and the biosorption efficiency achieved >90%. As the first study using spectroscopic tools to analyse PTE-biosorption by fungal cells in a high-throughput manner, our results indicated that spectral biomarkers associated with phosphor-lipids and proteins (1745 cm(-1), 1456 cm(-1) and 1396 cm(-1)) were significantly correlated with Cd biosorption, suggesting the cell wall components of S. chinense QD10 as the primary interactive targets. In contrast, there was no any spectral biomarker associated with Pb biosorption. Addtionally, adsorption isotherms evidenced a Langmuir model for Cd biosorption but a Freundlich model for Pb biosorption. Accordingly, Pb and Cd biosorption by S. chinense QD10 followed discriminating mechanisms, specific adsorption on cell membrane for Cd and unspecific extracellular precipitation for Pb. This work lends new insights into the mechanisms of PTE-biosorption via IR spectrochemical tools, which provide more comprehensive clues for biosorption behaviour with a nondestructive and high-throughput manner solving the traditional technical barrier regarding the real-world scenarios. Abstract:Microalgae single-cell electrochemical characteristics are playing an important key role in its industrial application and functionality. This study conducted a single-cell electrochemical study to explain the influence mechanism of intracellular phenolic and flavonoid contents of microalgae on its surface electric charge. In the method, four microalgae species, Arthrospira platensis (AP), Chlorella vulgaris (CV), Phaeodactylum tricornutum (PT), and Scenedesmus obliquus (SO), were studied through single-cell electrochemical current (SCC), single-cell micro-Raman spectrometry (SCMR), and other physicochemical methods. Also, they were correlated with the chemical analytical methods. In the results, PT and AP phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant activities were significantly high compared to CV and SO. On the other hand, SO had the highest SCC compared to AP and PT. Also, SCMR at 1514 cm(-1) was negatively correlated with antioxidant activity by nitric oxide (r(2) =-0.80). In conclusion, single-cell current measurement by gold microelectrode can verify the antioxidant activity of the different microalgae species. Besides, this work provides a simple micro-level study of the single-cell phytochemicals to better explain their exact functional impacts compared to the methods of macro-analyses that use millions of cells, which reduces their sensitivity. In which, it can be applied in the real-time functionality evaluation during microalgae cultivation.
Multilayer adsorption of lead (Pb) and fulvic acid by Chlorella pyrenoidosa: Mechanism and impact of environmental factors

Abstract:When the multilayer adsorption of lead (Pb) and fulvic acid (FA) occurs on algal surface, the adsorption capacity of Pb on the algae will increase dramatically, thus increasing the environmental risk of Pb. However, the corresponding mechanism and the influence of environmental factors on the multilayer adsorption remain unclear. Here, microscopic observation methods and batch adsorption experiments were exactly designed to investigate the adsorption behavior of multilayer adsorption of Pb and FA on algal surface. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that carboxyl groups were the major functional groups responsible for the binding of Pb ions in multilayer adsorption, and its number was more than that in monolayer adsorption. The solution pH, with an optimal pH of 7, was a critical factor influencing the occurrence of multilayer adsorption because it influences the protonation of the involved functional groups and determines the concentration of Pb2+ and Pb-FA in the solution. Increasing the temperature was beneficial for multilayer adsorption, with ΔH for Pb and FA varied from +17.12 to +47.68 kJ/mol and +16.19 to +57.74 kJ/mol, respectively. The multilayer adsorption of Pb and FA onto algal surface also followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model, but was extremely slower than the monolayer adsorption of Pb and FA by 30 times and 15 orders of magnitude, respectively. Therefore, the adsorption of Pb and FA in the ternary system had a different adsorption behavior than that in the binary system, which verified the presence of multilayer adsorption of Pb and FA and further support the multilayer adsorption mechanism. This work is important to provide data support for water ecological risk prevention and control of heavy metals.
Improving Determination of Pigment Contents in Microalgae Suspension with Absorption Spectroscopy: Light Scattering Effect and Bouguer-Lambert-Beer Law

Abstract:The Bouguer-Lambert-Beer (BLB) law serves as the fundamental basis for the spectrophotometric determination of pigment content in microalgae. Although it has been observed that the applicability of the BLB law is compromised by the light scattering effect in microalgae suspensions, in-depth research concerning the relationship between the light scattering effect and the accuracy of spectrophotometric pigment determination remains scarce. We hypothesized that (1) the precision of spectrophotometric pigment content determination using the BLB law would diminish with increasing nonlinearity of absorbance, and (2) employing the modified version of the BLB (mBLB) law would yield superior performance. To assess our hypotheses, we cultivated Phaeodactylum tricornutum under varying illumination conditions and nitrogen supplies in controlled indoor experiments, resulting in suspensions with diverse pigment contents. Subsequently, P. tricornutum samples were diluted into subsamples, and spectral measurements were conducted using different combinations of biomass concentrations and path lengths. This was carried out to assess the applicability of the BLB law and the nonlinearity of absorbance. The chlorophyll a and fucoxanthin contents in the samples were analyzed via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and subsequently used in our modeling. Our findings confirm our hypotheses, showing that the modified BLB law outperforms the original BLB law in terms of the normalized root mean square error (NRMSE): 6.3% for chlorophyll a and 5.8% for fucoxanthin, compared to 8.5% and 7.9%, respectively.
Transcriptional Profiling of Arabidopsis Seedlings in Response to Heavy Metal Lead (Pb)

Abstract:Lead (Pb) is one of the main sources of pollution in the environment, and is severely toxic to plants and animals. Using a DNA microarray, the transcriptional profiles of Arabidopsis thaliana genes in response to Pb treatment were investigated under different concentrations of Pb(NO3)2 solution from low (1μM, 10μM) to high (100μM) during the early stages of toxicity (3h and 24h). At each time point, Pb content was measured to confirm that the extensive heavy metal accumulation in Arabidopsis seedlings was caused by Pb treatment. Furthermore, eighteen selected genes with either moderate or high differential expression values from the microarray analysis were independently analyzed by quantitative real-time RT-PCR to confirm the reliability of the data. In our microarray analysis, the expressions of over 1310 genes were identified in response to Pb treatment. Extensive hierarchical clustering analysis of these responses indicated that the major consistently activated genes were also involved in common stress-induced responses. Especially, those that have been previously reported to be heavy metal inducible genes were significantly induced by lead treatment. Moreover, some important genes encoding enzymes or proteins involved in sulfur assimilation, GSH metabolism, indole-3-acedic acid (IAA) and jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis were activated, and these pathways were linked, directly or indirectly through signaling pathways, to biosynthesis of metal transports and detoxification molecules. Taken together, our results provided a new insight into the molecular mechanism of lead detoxification in Arabidopsis, and facilitated an understanding of the general lead/heavy metal-adaptive mechanism undertaken by plants.

Abstract:AimsTo determine the varieties and concentrations of pesticides by detecting the changes of microalgae components using Raman microspectroscopy technology.Methods and ResultsRaman microspectroscopy technology was used to detect the internal elements and characteristics of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. Partial least squares (PLS) was used to build the model between Raman signals of C.pyrenoidosa and different varieties or concentrations of pesticides. The PLS models were built with different preprocessing methods and the most optimized preprocessing method was found. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was also used to build the models to identify different pesticide varieties or concentrations. Sensitive wavelengths (SWs) corresponding to pigments of microalgae were selected, and the SWs-LDA models were built with the classification accuracy rate up to 967 and 90% respectively for pesticide varieties and concentrations identification.ConclusionsMeasuring changes of microalgae components by Raman microspectroscopy techniques could be used to identify the varieties and concentrations of pesticides in water.Significance and Impact of the StudyAlthough the low concentration level of pesticides does not have significant impact on the overall water environment, water would become worse due to the pollution accumulation in long-term. The method disclosed in this study can be used as a good example for pesticide detection with the help of microalgae. Raman microspectroscopy technology is a convenient and rapid tool to detect the characteristics of microalgae and contribute for pesticide detection.

Abstract:Individual differences in working memory (WM) predict principled variation in tasks of reasoning, response time, memory, and other abilities. Theoretically, a central function of WM is keeping task-relevant information easily accessible while suppressing irrelevant information. The present experiment was a novel study of mental control, using performance in the game Taboo as a measure. We tested effects of WM capacity on several indices, including perseveration errors (repeating previous guesses or clues) and taboo errors (saying at least part of a taboo or target word). By most measures, high-span participants were superior to low-span participants: High-spans were better at guessing answers, better at encouraging correct guesses from teammates, and less likely to either repeat themselves or produce taboo clues. Differences in taboo errors occurred only in an easy control condition. The results suggest that WM capacity predicts behavior in tasks requiring mental control, extending this finding to an interactive group setting.

Abstract:Oxidative stress of aquatic microorganisms under heavy metal stress is closely reflected by metabolite changes in cells but it is very difficult to study due to the fast metabolism process and severe in-situ measurements hurdle. Herein, the oxidative stress of cadmium on Euglena gracilis was systematically studied through multi-combined techniques. In particular, for the first time electrochemical approach was associated with Raman spectroscopy imaging to vividly to investigate temporal-spatially varied oxidative stress and its effects on cells metabolism, in which former real-time measured a volcanic relation of extracellular hydrogen peroxide versus the increase of cadmium stress, while the latter shows the corresponding metabolic changes by Raman imaging of single cells. This work builds a bridge to unravel the mechanism of cellular oxidative stress under harsh conditions in a more systematic and holistic approach, while holding a great promise to construct heavy metal biosensors precisely monitoring high heavy metal tolerance strains for environmental modification.

Abstract:The problem of excessive lead content in tea has become more and more serious with the development of society and industry. This paper investigated the ability of visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy to evaluate foliar lead uptake by tea plants through simulating real air pollution. Lead content of tea leaves in different treatment groups during stress time was measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). It was determined that stomata can be a channel for lead particles in the air and most of the lead entering through the stomata accumulates in the leaves. The spectral variation of treated samples was measured, and it was found that a combination of partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and spectral responses can perfectly classify the tea samples under different lead concentrations stress with an overall accuracy of 0.979. Then the Vis-NIR spectra were used for fast monitoring physiological and biochemical indicators in tea leaves under atmospheric deposition. Relevant spectra pretreatment methods and characteristic wavelength selection approaches were evaluated for quantitative analysis and then optimal prediction models to instantly detect quality indicators in tea samples were built. Among predictive models, PLS had the best results (RMSE = 0.139 mg/g, 0.663 mmol/g, and 1.494 μmol/g) for the prediction of chlorophyll a (Chl-a), ascorbic acid (ASA), and glutathione (GSH), respectively. Also, principal component regression (PCR) gave the best results (RMSE = 0.053 mg/g, 0.024 mg/g, and 0.011%) for prediction of chlorophyll b (Chl-b), carotenoid (Car) and moisture content (MC), respectively. Results of this study can be applied for developing an effective and reliable approach for monitoring atmospheric deposition in plants.

Abstract:Agents arising from engineering or pharmaceutical industries may have significant environmental impacts. Particularly, antimicrobials not only act as efficient eliminators of certain microbes but also facilitate the propagation of organisms with antimicrobial resistance, giving rise to critical health issues, e. g., the bloom of multidrug-resistant bacteria. Although many investigations have examined microbial responses to antimicrobials and characterized relevant mechanisms, they have focused mainly on high-level and short-term exposures, instead of simulating real-world scenarios in which the antimicrobial exposure is at a low-level for long periods. Herein, we developed a spectrochemical tool, attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, as a high-throughput and nondestructive approach to interrogate the long-term effects of low-level antimicrobial exposure in bacterial cells. Post-exposure to nanoparticulate silver (AgNP), tetracycline or their mixtures for 12 days, Gram-positive (Mycobacterium vanbaalenii PYR-1) and Gram-negative (Pseudomonas fluorescens) bacteria exhibited distinct IR spectral alterations. Multivariate analysis coupled with multivariate regression trees (MRT) indicates nutrient depletion and exposure time as the primary factors in bacterial behaviour, followed by exposure category and bacterial type. Nutrient depletion and starvation during long-term exposure drives bacterial cells into a dormant state or to exhibit additional cellular components (e. g., fatty acids) in response to antimicrobials, consequently causing a broader range of spectral alterations compared to short-term exposure. This work is the first report highlighting the more important roles of exposure duration and nutrient depletion, instead of treatment regimens of antimicrobials, in microbial responses to low-level and prolonged environmental exposures.
Prediction of bioaccessible lead in urban and suburban soils with Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy

Abstract:The successful use of visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) reflectance spectroscopy analysis requires selecting an optimal procedure of data acquisition and an accurate modeling approach. In this study, Vis-NIR with 350-2500 nm wavelengths were applied to detect different forms of lead (Pb) through the spectrally active soil constituents combining principal component regression (PCR) and Partial least-square regression (PLSR) for the Vis-NIR model calibration. Three clouds with different soil spectral properties were divided by the Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) in categories of Pb contamination risks: "low," "health," "ecological," ranging from 200 to 750 mg kg-1. Farm soils were used for calibration (n = 26), and more polluted garden soils (n = 36) from New York City were used for validation. Total and bioaccessible Pb concentrations were examined with PLSR models and compared with Support Vector Machine (SVM) Regression and Boosting Regression Tree (BRT) models. Performances of all models' predictions were qualitatively evaluated by the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Residual Prediction Deviation (RPD), and coefficient of determination (R2). For total Pb, the best predictive models were obtained with BRT (R2 = 0.82 and RMSE 341.80 mg kg-1) followed by SVM (validation, R2 = 0.77 and RMSE 337.96 mg kg-1), and lastly by PLSR (validation, R2 = 0.74 and RMSE 499.04 mg kg-1). The PLSR technique is the most accurate calibration model for bioaccessible Pb with an R2 value of 0.91 and RMSE of 68.27 mg kg-1. The regression analysis indicated that bioaccessible Pb is strongly influenced by organic content, and to a lesser extent, by Fe concentrations. Although PLSR obtained lower accuracy, the model selected many characteristic bands and, thus, provided accurate approach for Pb pollution monitoring.
