Abstract:In the Origin of Species (1859), Darwin argued that his revolutionary theory of evolution by natural selection represented a significant breakthrough in the understanding of instinctive behaviour. However, many aspects in the development of his thinking on behavioural phenomena indicate that the explanation of this particular organic feature was by no means an easy one, but that it posed an authentic challenge – something that Darwin himself always recognized. This paper explores Darwin's treatment of instincts within his theory of natural selection. Particular attention is given to elucidate how he tackled the difficulties of explaining instincts as evolving mental features. He had to explain and demonstrate its inheritance, variation, and gradual accumulation within populations. The historical and philosophical aspects of his theory are highlighted, as well as his study of the case in which the explanation of instincts represented a ‘special difficulty’; that is, the sterile castes of social insects.

Abstract:In 1861 the physiologist Ernst Brücke (1819-1892) published "The Elementary Organisms," calling for a major reform of the definition of the animal cell. An English translation of Brücke's essay is presented here for the first time. In this translation the numbered footnotes 1-9 are Brücke's own; alphabetical endnotes A-HH are my own annotations, with additional references to works cited by Brücke. Figures referenced by Brücke but not included in his original essay are also provided. Abstract:Rudolf Leuckart’s 1851 pamphlet Ueber den Polymorphismus der Individuen (On the polymorphism of individuals) stood at the heart of naturalists’ discussions on biological individuals, parts and wholes in mid-nineteenth-century Britain and Europe. Our analysis, which accompanies the first translation of this pamphlet into English, situates Leuckart’s contribution to these discussions in two ways. First, we present it as part of a complex conceptual knot involving not only individuality and the understanding of compound organisms, but also the alternation of generations, the division of labor in nature, and the possibility of finding general laws of the organic world. Leuckart’s pamphlet is important as a novel attempt to give order to the strands of this knot. It also solved a set of key biological problems in a way that avoided some of the drawbacks of an earlier teleological tradition. Second, we situate the pamphlet within a longer trajectory of inquiry into part-whole relations in biology from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. We argue that biological individuality, along with the problem-complexes with which it engaged, was as central a problem to naturalists before 1859 as evolution, and that Leuckart’s contributions to it left a long legacy that persisted well into the twentieth century. As biologists’ interests in part-whole relations are once again on the upswing, the longue durée of this problem merits renewed consideration.

Leopold Auerbach's heritage in the field of morphology and embryology with special emphasis on gametogenesis of invertebrates

Abstract:Plexus myentericus Auerbachi and Friedreich-Auerbach disease are widely used eponyms that are associated with eminent morphologist Leopold Auerbach (1828-1897), whose life is relatively little known due to limited access to his German-written XIX century biographies and lack of English biographical papers about him in world literature. Hereby we focused on hardly known achievements of Leopold Auerbach in the field of gametogenesis and embryology of invertebrates. Auerbach did not only confirm unicellularity of amoebas, which was previously discovered. He described cleavage of fertilized eggs of Ascaris nigrovenosa and Strongylus auricularis. Moreover, his accurate descriptions on germination of Paracentrotus lividus inspired a recognized German zoologist Oscar Hertwig (1849-1922). Auerbach also profoundly studied an encystation of Oxytricha pellionella on morphological grounds. His descriptions referred to karyokinesis as well as oogenesis and spermatogenesis to discover conjugations of spermatozoa in pairs in the epididymis of a beetle, Dytiscus marginalis. He also distinguished two types of spermatozoa of Paludina vivipara: the hairlike-shaped (German: haarförmigen) and the worm-shaped (wurmförmigen) ones of these fresh water (river) snails. His studies on germination (including cell division during cleavage of nematodes) inspired the others, e.g., Oscar Hertwig, and following generations to conclude that "Auerbach deserves the credit for having provided the first scientific foundation for modern teaching on fertilization" according to professor of anatomy Gustav Born (1851-1900) at Breslau University.

Abstract:A SCHOLARLY and thoughtful book like this makes one feel how much is lost to students of biology by lack of attention to the historical development of the science. Not only is the human interest missed, but also the educativeness of tracing the history of fundamental ideas. Moreover, for lack of historical discipline, the same mistakes. are made over and over again, and sound generalisations which have ceased to be prominent are unconsciously restated as new, it may be in a form far inferior to that given them by Cuvier, E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, von Baer, or some other outstanding thinker of older days. We welcome, therefore, Mr. Russell's contribution to the history of morphology, for it is based on many years of first-hand study of the documents and is illumined by insight. It is true history, not chronicle; it displays the continuous endeavour from Aristotle until to-day to understand the forms of animals, both in their original establishment and in their individual reproduction in every life-cycle.

"How nationality influences Opinion": Darwinism and palaeontology in France (1859-1914)

Abstract:This paper discusses the "non-reception" of Darwin's works and concepts in French palaeontology and palaeoanthropology between 1859 and 1914. Indeed, this integration was difficult, biased and belated, for ideological, intellectual and epistemological reasons: Clémence Royer's biased 1862 translation of Darwin's Origin of Species pulled its ideas toward "social darwinism", making them less attractive to the natural sciences. - French nationalism and the authority of religion, which imposed Cuvier's thinking until late into the century - the dominance of Lamarckian and neo-Lamarckian transformism in France, both in biology and in paleontology, which proposed the notion of orthogenetic laws and environmental determinations, and refused darwinian evolutionary mechanisms - obstacles inherent to the application of Darwin's concepts to palaeontology, namely the impossibility to identify evolutionary mechanisms through the fossil record, which was stressed by Darwin himself and underlined in turn by 19th century French palaeontologists. However, as I argue, in the course of the examined period, French palaeontology grew from refusal to a better understanding and evaluation of Darwin's thinking. The quest for intermediary forms, the construction of branching evolutionary trees and the attempts to reconstruct human biological and cultural evolution were important efforts toward an integration of some aspects of Darwinian views and practices into French palaeontology and plaeoanthropology. The 1947 Paris conference which brought together American Neo-darwinists and French paleontologists made Darwinian concepts better understood and triggered a revival of French palaeontology from the 1960s.
The sociobiology of genes: the gene’s eye view as a unifying behavioural-ecological framework for biological evolution

Abstract:Although classical evolutionary theory, i.e., population genetics and the Modern Synthesis, was already implicitly ‘gene-centred’, the organism was, in practice, still generally regarded as the individual unit of which a population is composed. The gene-centred approach to evolution only reached a logical conclusion with the advent of the gene-selectionist or gene’s eye view in the 1960s and 1970s. Whereas classical evolutionary theory can only work with (genotypically represented) fitness differences between individual organisms, gene-selectionism is capable of working with fitness differences among genes within the same organism and genome. Here, we explore the explanatory potential of ‘intra-organismic’ and ‘intra-genomic’ gene-selectionism, i.e., of a behavioural-ecological ‘gene’s eye view’ on genetic, genomic and organismal evolution. First, we give a general outline of the framework and how it complements the—to some extent—still ‘organism-centred’ approach of classical evolutionary theory. Secondly, we give a more in-depth assessment of its explanatory potential for biological evolution, i.e., for Darwin’s ‘common descent with modification’ or, more specifically, for ‘historical continuity or homology with modular evolutionary change’ as it has been studied by evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) during the last few decades. In contrast with classical evolutionary theory, evo-devo focuses on ‘within-organism’ developmental processes. Given the capacity of gene-selectionism to adopt an intra-organismal gene’s eye view, we outline the relevance of the latter model for evo-devo. Overall, we aim for the conceptual integration between the gene’s eye view on the one hand, and more organism-centred evolutionary models (both classical evolutionary theory and evo-devo) on the other.

A fascination with tailless mice: a scientific historical review of studies of the T/t complex

Abstract:The T/t complex of the mouse attracted many of the major figures of mouse genetics to perform genetic, cytogenetic, physiological, biochemical and molecular biological studies of it. These studies started with the discovery of short tailed mutants ( T s) and recessive lethal developmental mutations ( t s) which mapped to the same "locus" in the early 1920s in France. However, due to the non-receptivity of French scientists to genetics, they continued to be studied in mostly Anglophone countries to be joined by a wider international community in the 1970s. These discoveries led to developmental studies of the lethal mutants which provided the origin of mammalian developmental genetics. The fascinating property of transmission ratio distortion (non-50/50 segregation of alleles in offspring of males) elicited tremendous interest. There were false leads (that the region consisted of unusual DNA, that the alleles controlled cell surface antigens on embryonic cells and spermatozoa) and exciting discoveries. This historical review provides a review of this extensive area of research and some of the individuals involved in it.

The relationship between Rose Anna Shedlock (c1850-1878) and Emile Roux (1853-1933)

Abstract:The famous French scientist, Emile Roux, was previously discovered to have been secretly married to an English woman, Rose Anna Shedlock, one of the first women medical school students in Britain and Europe. Emile and Rose most likely met while in medical school in Paris, although for very different reasons, neither graduated. It was previously suggested that Rose left medical school after only a few years, although we present new evidence that that she was still a medical student four years later when she would have been near completion. Regardless, Rose moved back to England prior to taking her qualifying exams, where we found she lived at a girl's boarding school where one of her sisters was head mistress. In the following year, Emile travelled to London where he and Rose were married in a quiet civil ceremony. Soon after the wedding, Emile returned to Paris where he began working as an assistant to Louis Pasteur. In a tragic twist of fate, Rose died a year later in Madeira, which we have now noted was within days of when Emile performed his breakthrough experiments that led to the creation of vaccines in the laboratory.
Evolutionary dynamics of nascent multicellular lineages

Abstract:The evolution of multicellular organisms involves the emergence of cellular collectives that eventually become units of selection in their own right. The process can be facilitated by ecological conditions that impose heritable variance in fitness on nascent collectives with long-term persistence depending on capacity of competing lineages to transition reliably between soma- and germ-like stages of proto-life cycles. Prior work with experimental bacterial populations showed rapid increases in collective-level fitness with capacity to switch between life cycle phases being a particular focus of selection. Here we report experiments in which the most successful lineage from the earlier study was further propagated for 10 life cycle generations under regimes that required different investment in the soma-like phase. To explore the adaptive significance of switching, a control was included in which reliable transitioning between life cycle phases was abolished. The switch proved central to maintenance of fitness. Moreover, in a non-switch treatment, where solutions to producing a robust and enduring soma-phase were required, evolution of mutL-dependent switching emerged de novo. A newly developed computational pipeline (colgen) was used to display the moment-by-moment evolutionary dynamics of lineages providing rare visual evidence of the roles of chance, history and selection. Colgen, underpinned by a Bayesian model, was further used to propagate hundreds of mutations back through temporal genealogical series, predict lineages and time points corresponding to changes of likely adaptive significance, and in one instance, via a combination of targeted sequencing, genetics and analyses of fitness consequences, adaptive significance of a single mutation was demonstrated. Overall, our results shed light on the mechanisms by which collectives adapt to new selective challenges and demonstrate the value of genealogy-centered approaches for investigating the dynamics of lineage-level selection.

Abstract:The peace of the world is challenged by societal confrontations that can often be labeled "racial" or "ethnic." Emblematic of this is discrimination based on skin colour. William Bateson's background suggests sympathy with the black emancipation movement. Yet the movement's success is attributed more to battles between political figures than between scientists with contending views on the biology of racial differences. However, in the long term, Bateson's contributions to slavery and eugenic issues may be seen as no less important than those of politicians. Mendel's discovery of what we now know as "genes" languished until seized upon by Bateson in 1900. For six exhausting years he struggled to win scientific acceptance of these biological character-determining units. Later, he pressed the Mendelian message home to the general public, opposing simplistic applications of Mendelian principles to human affairs, and arguing that minor genic differences that distinguished "races" – e.g. skin colour – do not initiate new species. Bateson praised the "physiological selection" speciation hypothesis of Darwin's young research associate, George Romanes. This enthusiasm was rekindled by Robert Lock and formulated in modern terms with C. R. Crowther. Thus, the spark that initiates a divergence into two species can be non-genic. This normal form of hybrid sterility, based on genome-wide DNA sequence differences, operates on, but has not succeeded in dividing, the human species. It should not be labeled "idiopathic," and be clearly distinguished both from pathological sterility and undiagnosed sterilities that may prove to be pathological. We are one reproductively isolated population, the human species.

The Schema and Organization of the Cell: An Introduction to Ernst Brücke's Die Elementarorganismen (1861)

Abstract:Ernst Brücke's 1861 essay Die Elementarorganismen has often been cited as a watershed in the history of physiology as well as in the history of cell theory. In its time it was widely read as a reform of animal cell theory, shifting the concept of the cell away from Schleiden and Schwann's original cell schema of a membranous vesicle with a nucleus, and towards the protoplasm theory that had developed in botany, centered on the cell's living contents. It was also notorious for its arguments against the necessity of both the nucleus and the cell membrane. An English translation of "The Elementary Organisms" is presented for the first time in this journal issue, with annotations and illustrations, https://doi.org/10.1007/s10739-024-09773-9 . Brücke's essay was not only an intervention into cell theory: historians can read it as a continuation of debates on the nature of the organism and theories of organization, and as an epistemological meditation on the microscope. In addition, although Brücke was known as a founder of the Berlin school of organic physics, "The Elementary Organisms" shows how he combined an avant-garde physicalist physiology with a much older tradition of comparative anatomy and physiology. The following introductory essay will provide a scientific biography of Ernst Brücke up to 1863, with background on debates on biological organization, cell theory, and muscle histology.

Abstract:IN the number of NATURE for Sept. 3, a letter from Mr. William Field appears with the title “Hereditary Deformities,” commenting on certain alleged facts quoted in an ethnological article in Cassell's Popular Educator, from Dr. Theodor Waitz's “Introduction to Anthropology,” translated by Mr. Collingwood. Mr. Field justly remarks that facts of such a character, “if substantiated, would introduce Accidental Distortion as a co-worker with Natural Selection in the modification of species.” But he puts the question— “Do these stories rest on a good foundation?” Personally, I do not know. All I can say is, that Dr. Waitz, whose scientific authority is unimpeachable, published them without expressing any doubts of their accuracy. They may be found with some alleged facts of analogous character, at pp. 83 to 85 of his first volume, as translated by Mr. Collingwood. Speaking of animals, he says:—

Abstract:AT a time when the accumulation of the facts of animal and plant structure threatened to prevent a clear conception of their true value, this famous memoir by a distinguished pupil of Johannes Müller converted histology into a rational branch of science. Schwann, who effected this profound change, based his method on development. He pointed out that “there is a common principle of development for all the elementary parts of the organism,” and in so doing founded (with Schleiden) the cell-theory upon which modern physiology and pathology are based. The cellular nature of animals and plants had already been demonstrated, but there was no general hypothesis to “colligate” the facts. This Schwann supplied. He not only confirmed facts of cellular structure, but, in a refreshingly broad way, and moving with the ease of genius amongst a multiplicity of data that would have bewildered a lesser mind, he brought forward the evidence for the origin of the tissues and enunciated clearly his views on the nature of life.

Contrasting selected reproductive challenges of today with those of antiquity--the past is prologue

Abstract:Viewing human history through a medical lens provides a renewed appreciation for today's vexing reproductive challenges, as some modern dilemmas are actually continuations of similar challenges experienced long ago. Certainly there are many examples of assisted fertility therapy that were entirely theoretical only a generation ago, but have become commonplace in modern practice and society. In particular posthumous birth and infertility have, over time, been the focus of compelling social interest, occasionally even impacting national security and dynastic succession. While the concepts have remained static, the tools available to extend and improve reproductive success have changed radically. Appropriately regarded as confidential and private, an individual's reproductive details are typically impervious to formal study. Yet, archival sources including ancient literature and formal court records can occasionally provide evidence of otherwise deeply personal concerns of a different era. Our assessment finds the issues, worries, and desires of patients of antiquity to align closely with contemporary reproductive challenges. Because children and family have always been central to the human experience, the consequences of reproduction (or the lack thereof) can make substantial imprints upon the cultural, economic, and political landscape-irrespective of civilization or century. In this article, selected motifs are described in a broad historical context to illustrate how challenges of human reproduction have remained essentially unchanged, despite a vast accumulation of knowledge made possible by gains in reproductive science and technology. Abstract:Until the mid-nineteenth century, "physiology" was a comprehensive theory of life, expounded and shaped by Johannes P. Müller (1801–1858). Biologists and medical doctors still refer to him today. In the summer term of 1851, Müller gave a lecture on the Comparative Anatomy of animals. This lecture was attended and recorded by Ernst Zeller (1830–1902), a future physician and zoologist, and has recently been published together with a German transcript. In this paper, we situate Johannes Müller within the intellectual history of his time. Through his "empirical idealism," we show how he opposed the speculative tendencies of the romantic understanding of nature, the emerging evolutionism, and the growing splits in the natural sciences. Müller focused on recognizing living nature as a whole and realizing ideal "phenomena" through his empirical research. He considered the notion of the soul of the world. Müller's lecture transcript serves as a poignant testament to German scientific culture in the mid-nineteenth century, a few years before the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species. It also provides valuable insights into the self-contained epistemological foundations of morphology.

Abstract:Understanding how natural selection drives diversification in nature has been at the forefront of biological research for over a century. The main idea is simple: natural selection favours individuals best suited to pass on their genes. However, the journey from birth to reproduction is complex as organisms experience multiple developmental stages, each influenced by genetic and environmental factors (Orr, 2009). These complexities compound even further as each stage of development might be governed by a unique underlying set of alleles and genes. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Goebl et al. (2022) examine the role of natural selection in driving ecotypic divergence across different life history stages of the prairie sunflower Helianthus petiolaris . The authors used reciprocal transplant experiments, demographic models, and genomic sequencing to explore fitness variation across developmental stages. They show how natural selection impacts population divergence across multiple life history stages and evaluate the resulting allele frequency changes. Goebl et al. link these results to the role of chromosomal inversions, thus furthering our understanding of how ecological divergence proceeds in the face of gene flow. Below, we explore these results in detail and complement their interpretation by considering the evolution of genetic correlations amongst traits governing fitness.

Abstract:Humans have moved domestic animals around the globe for thousands of years. These have occasionally established feral populations in nature, often with devastating ecological consequences. To understand how natural selection shapes re-adaptation into the wild, we investigated one of the most successful colonizers in history, the European rabbit. By sequencing the genomes of 297 rabbits across three continents, we show that introduced populations exhibit a mixed wild–domestic ancestry. We show that alleles that increased in frequency during domestication were preferentially selected against in novel natural environments. Interestingly, causative mutations for common domestication traits sometimes segregate at considerable frequencies if associated with less drastic phenotypes (for example, coat colour dilution), whereas mutations that are probably strongly maladaptive in nature are absent. Whereas natural selection largely targeted different genomic regions in each introduced population, some of the strongest signals of parallelism overlap genes associated with neuronal or brain function. This limited parallelism is probably explained by extensive standing genetic variation resulting from domestication together with the complex mixed ancestry of introduced populations. Our findings shed light on the selective and molecular mechanisms that enable domestic animals to re-adapt to the wild and provide important insights for the mitigation and management of invasive populations.

Theoretical virtues in eighteenth-century debates on animal cognition

Abstract:Abstract Within eighteenth-century debates on animal cognition we can distinguish at least three main theoretical positions: (i) Buffon’s mechanism, (ii) Reimarus’ theory of instincts, and (iii) the sensationalism of Condillac and Leroy. In this paper, I adopt a philosophical perspective on this debate and argue that in order to fully understand the justification Buffon, Reimarus, Condillac, and Leroy gave for their respective theories, we must pay special attention to the theoretical virtues these naturalists alluded to while justifying their position. These theoretical virtues have received little to no attention in the literature on eighteenth-century animal cognition, but figure prominently in the justification of the mechanist, instinctive, and sensationalist theories of animal behavior. Through my philosophical study of the role of theoretical virtues in eighteenth-century debates on animal cognition, we obtain a deeper understanding of how theoretical virtues were conceptualized in eighteenth-century science and how they influenced the justification of theories of animal cognition.
