Abstract:MXenes are gaining attention due to their unique 2D layered structures, but face limitations like restacking. Transition metal sulfides (TMS) are promising for energy applications, yet suffer from poor conductivity and volume changes during ion processes, leading to capacity fading. Therefore, we borrowed the structure of ZIF-L with a large specific surface area to synthesize TMS. Constructing heterostructures with metallic conductive MXenes and electrochemically active TMSs emerges as a promising strategy to enhance electrochemical performance and address these challenges. In the present paper, Ti 3 C 2 T X Mxene is successfully combined with TMS by a facile in-situ reaction. Based on the electrochemical analysis, Mxene/CoS/NF heterostructure electrode presents an area capacitance of 0.91 mAh/cm 2 , which is 9.78 times of that of pure MXene at a current density of 2 mA/cm 2 . Impressively, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor retains a commendable 85.21 % of its original capacity even after 10,000 cycles. The power density of the assembled supercapacitor is 49.15 mW cm -3 , and the energy density is 1.42 mWh cm -3 . This underscores a practical and effective avenue for advancing research on Mxene-based electrodes.

Abstract:In 2011, a new family of two-dimensional, 2D, transition metal carbides and carbonitrides called MXenes were produced for the first time by etching atomically thin metal layers from ternary layered materials called MAX phases. The latter have a composition of Mn+1AXn, where M stands for early transition metal, A is a metal that belongs to groups 13 and 14 in the periodic table, X is carbon/nitrogen, and n = 1, 2, or 3. So far, nine different MXenes were reported MXenes were reported, viz., Ti3C2, Ti2C, Nb2C, V2C, (Ti0.5,Nb0.5)2C, (V0.5,Cr0.5)3C2, Ti3CN, Ta4C3, and Nb4C3. In addition, many more are predicted to be stable. Since the synthesize process of MXenes is carried in F-contained aqueous systems, the surfaces of the as synthesized material are terminated with a mixture of moieties including O, OH, and F. Bare MXenes are predicted to be metallic conductors while terminated ones are predicted to be semiconductors with relatively small band gaps. Titanium carbonitride is predicted to be an exception since it is predicted to metallic even after termination. In this work we used a simple mixing approach to prepare Ti3CN/nano S composite with a high sulfur content of ~75 wt.%, and high mass loading. Analysis for their performance in Li-S batteries and the effect of mass loading in addition to the composite material characterization will be presented.
Ambient-Stable Two-Dimensional Titanium Carbide (MXene) Enabled by Iodine Etching

Abstract:MXene (e.g., Ti3 C2 ) represents an important class of two-dimensional (2D) materials owing to its unique metallic conductivity and tunable surface chemistry. However, the mainstream synthetic methods rely on the chemical etching of MAX powders (e.g., Ti3 AlC2 ) using hazardous HF or alike, leading to MXene sheets with fluorine termination and poor ambient stability in colloidal dispersions. Here, we demonstrate a fluoride-free, iodine (I2 ) assisted etching route for preparing 2D MXene (Ti3 C2 Tx , T=O, OH) with oxygen-rich terminal groups and intact lattice structure. More than 71 % of sheets are thinner than 5 nm with an average size of 1.8 μm. They present excellent thin-film conductivity of 1250 S cm-1 and great ambient stability in water for at least 2 weeks. 2D MXene sheets with abundant oxygen surface groups are excellent electrode materials for supercapacitors, delivering a high gravimetric capacitance of 293 F g-1 at a scan rate of 1 mV s-1 , superior to those made from fluoride-based etchants (<290 F g-1 at 1 mV s-1 ). Our strategy provides a promising pathway for the facile and sustainable production of highly stable MXene materials.
First-principles study on the adsorption and lithium storage capacities of Hf3C2 and Hf3C2T2(T = O, F, S) MXenes

Abstract:Based on the theoretical framework of the first principle, the adsorption and theoretical lithium storage capacities of Hf3C2 and surface functionalized Hf3C2T2(T = O, F, S) MXenes were studied. The structural stability of the system and the influence of electrical properties on energy storage properties are analyzed when different functional groups are located in different positions. The formation energy results suggest that the three functional Hf3C2T2(T = O, F, S) structures are energetically stable, and the CCP site is the most stable among the possible sites of HCP, TOP and CCP. By calculating the energy bands and density of states, it is proved that F-functionalized Hf3C2F2 is not conducive to adsorption. During the adsorption process, the lithium intercalation process is carried out in the way of surface adsorption of atoms, in which the HCP site of bare Hf3C2 and the CCP site of functionalized Hf3C2T2 are the most favorable adsorption sites. The storage capacities of bare Hf3C2, Hf3C2O2, and Hf3C2S2 are 287.51 mAhg−1, 271.95 mAhg−1 and 258.00 mAhg−1, respectively. The Hf3C2O2 has a higher lithium storage capacity than Hf3C2S2, so both oxygen functionalized Hf3C2O2 and bare Hf3C2 are promising battery materials.

Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) materials are highly demandable for the high charge rate in batteries. In Li-ion batteries, the 2D graphene materials are mostly well-studied. For metallic material, the physical/chemical properties can be tuned because the MXenes surface has a dangling bond according to their functional group, which provides MXenes are novel materials for batter electrochemical performance. The optimization and stability of the Hf3C2F2 monolayer are given ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) by the density functional theory approach. Here, the monolayer of Hf¬3C2F2 has a stable structure, metallic nature, and low diffusion energy barrier shows a metal anode material for the rechargeable storage device.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metals carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides, regarded as MXenes, holds great promise into an extensive scope of applications such as efficient catalysis and energy conversion and storage materials. Up to now, various strategies of synthesizing MXenes have been explored, typically including F-containing aqueous etching process and molten salt etching method, etc. In this work, for the first time, we design a novel solid-phase etching approach to synthesize two-dimensional titanium carbide (MXenes) sheets with assistance of supercritical CO2 (SC CO2), and the solid-phase etching mechanism behind the efficient fabrication process has also been revealed from a series of characterizations. It is demonstrated that SC CO2-coated FeF3•3H2O can be successfully help to realize the delamination of multilayer MXenes into single-layer or few-layers MXenes, and at the same time, the as-prepared MXenes sheets are demonstrated to have large-area size, high quality and rich fluorine termination groups, which is efficient for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

The unique properties of 2D MXene such as excellent mechanical properties, hydrophilic surfaces and metallic conductivity made it interesting for application in electrodes of rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, photocatalysts, catalysts, transparent conducting films, and flexible high-strength composites. The MXene can be synthesized through a selective etching process by using either in-situ HF (hydrofluoric acid) or direct HF methods. This study reports on the effect of the in-situ HF and direct HF etching procedures on the morphology of the synthesis Ti2C3 MXene using titanium aluminum carbide (Ti2AlC3) as precursor. The morphology and elements presence were evaluated by using variable pressure field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and energy dispersion X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy analyses, respectively. The analysis shows that the MXene synthesized through the direct HF method was successfully delaminated compared to the in-situ HF procedures.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, known as MXenes, hold potential in electrocatalytic applications. Tungsten (W) based-MXenes are of particular interest as they are predicted to have low overpotentials in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, incorporating W into the MXene structure has proven difficult due to the calculated instability of its hypothetical MAX precursors. In this study, we present a theory-guided synthesis of a W-containing MXene, W2TiC2Tx, derived from a non-MAX nanolaminated ternary carbide (W,Ti)4C4-y precursor by selective etching of one of the covalently bonded tungsten layers. Our results indicate the importance of W and Ti ordering and the presence of vacancy defects for the successful selective etching of the precursor. We confirm the atomistic out-of-plane ordering of W and Ti using density functional theory, Rietveld refinement, and electron microscopy methods. Additionally, the W-rich basal plane endows W2TiC2Tx MXene with a remarkable HER overpotential (~144 mV at 10 mA/cm2). This study adds a tungsten-containing MXene made from a covalently bonded non-MAX phase opening more ways to synthesize novel 2D materials.

The fabrication of Ti3C2 and Ti3CN MXenes by electrochemical etching

Abstract:2D MXenes are well-known for their outstanding performance in electrochemical energy storage and many other applications owing to their high conductivity and specific surface area. An obstacle to the wider synthesis of MXenes for research and industrial applications is the use of hazardous hydrofluoric acid (HF) during their synthesis. Herein, we developed the electrochemical etching process for the synthesis of Ti3C2 and Ti3CN MXenes by using aqueous tetrafluoroboric acid as the electrolyte, thus only involving a very low concentration of HF. The effect of electrical potential and temperature on the etching rate is studied and compared to chemical etching with HBF4. A mechanism based on the selective anodic dissolution of aluminium from the Ti3AlC2 and Ti3AlCN with the tetrafluoroborate ion is proposed. The MXene formation was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The MXene flakes from the electrochemical etching process have larger lateral dimensions compared to chemically etched MXene flakes as a result of the suppression of the HF decomposition and rapid etching rate. The electrodes of lithium-ion supercapacitors made from electrochemically etched Ti3C2 and Ti3CN exhibited cyclic performance and rate capabilities comparable to HF-etched MXenes.

Abstract:MXene-Ti3C2Tx is a promising material for next-generation energy storage for sodium-ion capacitors (SICs). However, the attraction between active functional groups and hydrogen bonds on the surface of Ti3C2Tx make the interlayer agglomerate obviously. Herein, we introduce 2D ZnCo bimetallic hydroxide (ZnCo-LDH) to adsorb on Ti3C2Tx nanosheets (Ti3C2Tx/ZnCo-LDH) and form the 3D interlaced porous frameworks, which could stabilize the complex structure and provide flexible ion diffusion channels. The ZnCo-LDH could not only increase the active sites for adsorbing the charges, but also prevent Ti3C2Tx from agglomerating and promote the electron transport kinetics. Benefited from this novel stable structure, Ti3C2Tx/ZnCo-LDH possess a wonderful specific capacitance (644.9 F g-1 at 2 mV s-1) and outstanding rate performance that combine with pseudocapacitance and low resistance. Particularly, the Ti3C2Tx/ZnCo-LDH electrode exhibit an excellent cyclic stability with 95.5% of the initial capacitance after 10000 cycles at 5 A g-1. More significantly, the SICs fabricated with 3D porous Ti3C2Tx/ZnCo-LDH display maximized energy density of 27.2 Wh kg- 1 and power density of 7987.5 W kg- 1, and an outstanding cycle stability of 95.8% after 10000 cycles. This work could provide an effective strategy for the preparation of MXene and LDH composites as electrode materials for sodium ion capacitors.

Abstract:High-entropy materials (HEMs) have great potential for energy storage and conversion due to their diverse compositions, and unexpected physical and chemical features. However, high-entropy atomic layers with fully exposed active sites are difficult to synthesize since their phases are easily segregated. Here, it is demonstrated that high-entropy atomic layers of transition-metal carbide (HE-MXene) can be produced via the selective etching of novel high-entropy MAX (also termed Mn+1AXn (n = 1, 2, 3), where M represents an early transition-metal element, A is an element mainly from groups 13–16, and X stands for C and/or N) phase (HE-MAX) (Ti1/5V1/5Zr1/5Nb1/5Ta1/5)2AlC, in which the five transition-metal species are homogeneously dispersed into one MX slab due to their solid-solution feature, giving rise to a stable transition-metal carbide in the atomic layers owing to the high molar configurational entropy and correspondingly low Gibbs free energy. Additionally, the resultant high-entropy MXene with distinct lattice distortions leads to high mechanical strain into the atomic layers. Moreover, the mechanical strain can efficiently guide the nucleation and uniform growth of dendrite-free lithium on HE-MXene, achieving a long cycling stability of up to 1200 h and good deep stripping–plating levels of up to 20 mAh cm−2.

Fluoride‐Free Synthesis of Two‐Dimensional Titanium Carbide (MXene) Using A Binary Aqueous System

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide (Ti3 C2 ) is emerging as an important member of the MXene family. However, fluoride-based synthetic procedures remain an impediment to the practical applications of this promising class of materials. Here we demonstrate an efficient fluoride-free etching method based on the anodic corrosion of titanium aluminium carbide (Ti3 AlC2 ) in a binary aqueous electrolyte. The dissolution of aluminium followed by in situ intercalation of ammonium hydroxide results in the extraction of carbide flakes (Ti3 C2 Tx , T=O, OH) with sizes up to 18.6 μm and high yield (over 90 %) of mono- and bilayers. All-solid-state supercapacitor based on exfoliated sheets exhibits high areal and volumetric capacitances of 220 mF cm-2 and 439 F cm-3 , respectively, at a scan rate of 10 mV s-1 , superior to those of LiF/HCl-etched MXenes. Our strategy paves a safe way to the scalable synthesis and application of MXene materials.

Abstract:Abstract The effects of nanoconfined water and charge storage mechanism are crucial in achieving ultrahigh electrochemical performance of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (MXenes). We propose a facile method to manipulate the nanoconfined water through surface chemistry modification. By introducing oxygen and nitrogen surface groups, more active sites were created for Ti3C2 MXene, also with the interlayer spacing significantly increased by accommodating three-layer nanoconfined water. Exceptionally high capacitance of 550 F g–1 (2000 F cm–3) was obtained with outstanding high-rate performance. The atomic scale elucidation of layer-dependent properties of nanoconfined water and pseudocapacitive charge storage was deeply probed through a combination of ‘computational and experimental microscopy’. We believe the understanding and manipulation strategy of nanoconfined water will shed light on pushing MXene and other 2D materials to better electrochemical performance.

Controllable Etching of Ti3SiC2 to Produce Fluorine‐Enriched, Hydrophobic 2D Titanium Carbide for Ultrastable Zinc Ion Batteries

Abstract:Fluorine‐enriched MXene Ti3C2Fx is synthesized via selectively etching Ti3SiC2 in sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas, in which SF6 enables the selective removal of Si by forming volatile SiF4 and reacts with Ti3C2 slabs, affording Ti3C2Fx MXene with a high content of 87 at.% for ‐F terminations, shows unique hydrophobicity and good electrochemical properties in zinc ion batteries. MXenes are mainly produced via selectively etching MAX phases in aqueous F‐containing solutions, commonly showing a highly hydrophilic character due to their plentiful ‐O and ‐OH terminations. However, the hydrophilic nature of MXenes may deteriorate their durability and stability as employed in humid and aqueous environments. Here, this work demonstrates a new etching approach to produce fluorine‐enriched MXene Ti3C2Fx via selective etching of Si from Ti3SiC2 in sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas. During the etching process, SF6 enables the selective removal of Si species with the formation of volatile SiF4 and efficiently reacts with the exposed surface of Ti3C2 slabs, affording Ti3C2Fx MXene with a fraction of ‐F termination up to 87 at.% and good hydrophobicity. Such hydrophobic Ti3C2Fx MXene is beneficial to suppress water‐induced side reactions and decrease the Zn nucleation energy barrier, delivering a long cyclic lifespan of 1200 h and superior rate performance up to 6.4 mA cm−2 in Ti3C2Fx/Zn symmetric cells. Coupled with nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) as a cathode, the zinc full cell with Ti3C2Fx/Zn anode exhibits good rate capabilities (58 mAh g−1, 3.2 A g−1) and long cycling stability up to 1000 cycles at 3.2 A g−1.

Abstract:2D transition metal carbides (2D TMCs and MXenes) are promising candidates for applications of energy storage and catalysis. However, producing high-quality, large 2D flakes of Mo2C MXene has been challenging. Here, a new salt-assisted templating approach is reported that enables the direct synthesis of 2D Mo2 C with low defect concentrations. KCl acts as a template to form an intermediate 2D product, facilitating Mo2 C formation without coarsening upon melting. The thickness of the flakes produced can range from monolayer (0.36 nm) to 10 layers (4.55 nm), and the electrocatalytical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of 2D Mo2 C is inversely proportional to its thickness. The monolayer Mo2 C shows remarkable HER performance with a current density of ≈6800 mA cm- 2 at 470 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode and an ultrahigh turnover frequency of ≈17 500 s- 1 . This salt-assisted synthesis approach can also produce WC and V8 C7 nanosheets, expanding the family of 2D carbides. The new pathway eliminates the need for layered ceramic precursors, making it a versatile approach to direct synthesis of MXene-like 2D carbides.

Abstract:A family of 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides known as MXenes has received increasing attention since the discovery of Ti 3 C 2 in 2011. To date, about 30 different MXenes with well‐defined structures and properties have been synthesized, and many more are theoretically predicted to exist. Due to the numerous assets including excellent mechanical properties, metallic conductivity, unique in‐plane anisotropic structure, tunable band gap, and so on, MXenes rapidly positioned themselves at the forefront of the 2D materials world and have found numerous promising applications. Particular interest is devoted to applications in electrochemical energy storage, whereby 2D MXenes work either as electrodes, additives, separators, or hosts. This review summarizes recent advances in the synthesis, fundamental properties and composites of MXene and highlights the state‐of‐the‐art electrochemical performance of MXene‐based electrodes/devices. The progresses in the field of supercapacitors and Li‐ion batteries, Li‐S batteries, Na‐ and other alkali metal ion batteries are reviewed, and current challenges and new opportunities for MXenes in this surging energy storage field are presented. In the focus of interest is the possibility to boost device‐level performance, particularly that of rechargeable batteries, which are of utmost importance in future energy technologies. Very recently, the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to the inventors of the Li‐ion battery. For sure, this will provide an additional stimulation to study fundamental aspects of electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:The assembly of three‐dimensional (3D) structured materials from two‐dimensional (2D) units paves up a royal road for building thick and dense electrodes, which is the long pursuit for a practical energy storage device. 2D transitional metal carbides (MXene) make promises for this due to their capabilities of solution‐based assembly and intrinsic high density, yet facing huge challenges in yielding high areal capacitance electrodes owing to the absence of porous ion transport paths. Here, a gelation‐densification process initiated by hydroiodide acids (HI) is proposed, where the protons break the electrostatic balance of MXene nanosheets to trigger the gelation, while HI serves as the spacers to prevent nanosheets from restacking during the capillary shrinkage. More promising, the controlled evaporation of reductive HI leaves superiorly shrinking yet porous network for ion transport, and the produced monoliths exhibit a high density of 2.74 g cm−3 and an unprecedented areal capacitance of 18.6 F cm−2. A simple approach to synthesis Cr2CTx MXene for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:Two-dimensional chromium carbide-based MXenes are predicted as an efficient catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the lack of an effective approach to fabricate this promising material remains an impediment to practical applications. Herein, a simple strategy is proposed to synthesis Cr2CTx ultrathin structures from Cr2AlC MAX. The high-resolution analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) corroborated with X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy demonstrates that the Al atomic layers have been detached from the pristine MAX structure. Further atomic-resolution STEM confirms that the ultrathin Cr2CTx sheets with fluoride-free surface, nanostructured Cr2CO2, and Al2O3 phases are originated as by-products. The electrochemical test shows that the fabricated Cr2CTx composite with minimal Al2O3 have a good performance for hydrogen evolution reaction and exceed even that of Pt sheet catalyst at high current density. Moreover, high stability of more than 160 h without attenuation was observed to be better than the other MXenes catalytic performer to date. This work paves a gentle route to fabricate Cr2CTx MXene and demonstrates the potential application for HER.

A Facile Etching Route for Preparing Ti 3 C 2 MXene with Enhanced Electrochemical Performance in Silver Nitrate Solution

Abstract:Two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 MXene is a promising electrode material for high-capacity supercapacitor, which is normally prepared by selective etching of the Al layer from ternary carbide Ti 3 AlC 2 MAX phase using HF acid solution. Here a distinct etching method using a little HF acid is reported. Ti 3 C 2 MXene decorated with Ag nanoparticles are synthesized via a chemical replacement reaction with AgNO 3 solution at room temperature and then evaluated as working electrodes. Due to the synergistic effect between Ag and Ti 3 C 2 matrix, the resulting composite of the 10 wt% AgNO 3 treated sample (Ag-10) exhibits higher specific capacitance of 779.5 F g −1 at the scan rate of 5 mV s −1 in 6 M KOH electrolyte solution and shows good cycling stability with capacitance retaining 95% after 5000-cycles. This work also shows the possibility of using other metallic cations with higher redox potential to prepare high performance MXenes for supercapacitor materials.
