Abstract:Examining manual lateralization (handedness) in nonhuman primates might be an interesting approach to gaining insight into the evolution of asymmetry in humans. Moreover, handedness could also reflect the effect of environmental alterations on the free-ranging animals that are forced to live with anthropogenic interferences. Despite addressing the handedness among monkeys and apes, only a few studies have focused on these free-ranging urban-adapted nonhuman primates, which could challenge our perception of habitat loss and deforestation. Here, we conducted experimental trials with two tasks, one unimanual (simple reaching) and one bimanual (tube task) to explore manual lateralization in a highly human-provisioned group of free-ranging Hanuman langurs. Experimental outcomes revealed an asymmetrical hand use distribution, with a bias towards the left hand. As bimanual tasks elicited a higher degree of lateralization, these tasks seem to be more suited to study manual laterality, and our results also highlight the significance of experimental tasks in establishing hand preference in langurs. This study also reveals that such lateralization developed with age as adults distinctly displayed their preference towards left-hand usage in contrast to juveniles and subadults which used both hands comparably. Mostly considered to be arboreal, the langurs of our study group spend a considerable amount of time with humans on the ground, thereby showing a terrestrial tendency. Postural origin theory states that terrestrial animals tend to use their right hand and arboreal ones their left. Therefore, the presence of a group level left-hand bias in the adult langurs of Dakshineswar creates a dilemma for this theory.

Abstract:Hand preference is the preferential use of one hand for a single task. Its study provides insight into the neural mechanisms underlying motor skills, perception, and cognitive functions. From a comparative perspective, it also offers a window into evolutionary history, shedding light on whether manual preferences stem from genetics, environmental influences, or a combination of both. However, there is a paucity of information on preferential hand use for several primate taxa. Here we examine hand preference for the first time in mantled howler monkeys ( Alouatta palliata ) to determine if there is preferential hand use at the individual and population level as well as sex differences in hand use. We followed 17 wild adult individuals for 10 months and used focal animal sampling (506 focal samples) to record hand use in two types of self-directed behaviors, touching (1246 events) and scratching (1115 events). According to the binomial tests, four individuals were right-hand-preferent, two were left-hand-preferent, and 11 were ambilateral during touching, whereas for scratching seven individuals were right-hand-preferent, two were left-hand-preferent, and eight were ambilateral. At the population level, there was ambilaterality in both behaviors. At the individual level, according to the HI index, hand preference in touching and scratching were not associated and did not vary between sexes. These findings concur with previous studies with howler monkeys and other taxa suggesting that population-level hand preference is not a universal trait across primates.

The evolution and biological correlates of hand preferences in anthropoid primates

Abstract:The evolution of human right-handedness has been intensively debated for decades. Manual lateralization patterns in non-human primates have the potential to elucidate evolutionary determinants of human handedness, but restricted species samples and inconsistent methodologies have so far limited comparative phylogenetic studies. By combining original data with published literature reports, we assembled data on hand preferences for standardized object manipulation in 1786 individuals from 38 species of anthropoid primates, including monkeys, apes, and humans. Based on that, we employ quantitative phylogenetic methods to test prevalent hypotheses on the roles of ecology, brain size, and tool use in primate handedness evolution. We confirm that human right-handedness represents an unparalleled extreme among anthropoids and found taxa displaying population-level handedness to be rare. Species-level direction of manual lateralization was largely uniform among non-human primates and did not strongly correlate with any of the selected biological predictors, nor with phylogeny. In contrast, we recovered highly variable patterns of hand preference strength, which show signatures of both ecology and phylogeny. In particular, terrestrial primates tend to display weaker hand preferences than arboreal species. These results challenge popular ideas on primate handedness evolution, including the postural origins hypothesis. Furthermore, they point to a potential adaptive benefit of disparate lateralization strength in primates, a measure of hand preference that has often been overlooked in the past. Finally, our data show that human lateralization patterns do not align with trends found among other anthropoids, suggesting that unique selective pressures gave rise to the unusual hand preferences of our species.
Differences in social and vocal behavior between left- and right-handed common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

Abstract:Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) show either a left- or right-hand preference for reaching to pick up food and they retain the same preference throughout adult life. We compared the behavior of 10 right-handed and 10 left-handed marmosets, matched for age and sex. They were presented with live crickets both when alone and when in their social group. The marmosets captured more crickets and the latency to capture the first cricket was shorter when they were in a group than when they were alone. This effect of social facilitation was significantly greater for right- than left-handed individuals. The number of vocalizations (tsik, crackle, very brief whistle, cough, and phee) produced by the left- and right-handed marmosets differed significantly: right-handed marmosets produced an increased number of all of these calls when the crickets were presented, whereas left-handed marmosets did not show a change from pretesting levels. The right-handed marmosets also produced more tsik (mobbing) calls than left-handed marmosets when they were presented with a fear-inducing stimulus and performed more head cocking and parallax movements than the left-handed marmosets. Hence, hand preference is associated with differences in exploratory and social behavior, the latter including vocal communication.

Performance on Inhibitory Tasks Does Not Relate to Handedness in Several Small Groups of Callitrichids

Abstract:Brain lateralization, a trait ubiquitous in vertebrates and invertebrates, refers to structural differences between the left and right sides of the brain or to the left and right sides controlling different functions or processing information in different ways. Many studies have looked into the advantages of lateralized brains and discovered that cerebral lateralization confers a fitness advantage. Enhancing cognitive ability has been proposed as one of the potential benefits of the lateralized brain, however, this has not been widely validated. In this study, we investigated the handedness of 34 subjects from four groups of Callitrichids, as well as their performance in two inhibitory control tasks (the revised A-not-B task and the cylinder task). The subjects had strong individual hand preferences, and only a few zoo-born individuals were ambidextrous. Sex and generation influence the strength of hand preference. In the cylinder task, the subjects showed differences between groups, and the performance of the second-generation was better than that of the first-generation. We found that neither the strength of hand preferences (ABS-HI) or direction of hand preferences (HI) was linked with success on the two inhibitory tasks. That is, we were unable to support the enhanced cognitive function hypothesis. We believe that individual ontogeny and the type of cognitive task have an impact on the support of this hypothesis. The advantages of lateralized brain may be reflected in tests that require multiple cognitive abilities.
Lateralization of feeding behaviour in white-fronted lemur (Eulemur albifrons) and ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) in captivity

Abstract:Introduction Functional cerebral asymmetry is reflected in the lateralization of some behavioural patterns in many vertebrate species. In primates, behavioural lateralization has been related to both life style and age and sex, and it affects behaviours such as feeding and other tasks that require precision movements. Methods We have studied feeding lateralization concerning the use of right and left hand to take the food in two species of lemurs in captivity, the mainly arboreal white-fronted lemur and the more terrestrial ring-tailed lemur, taking also account the age and the sex of the individuals. We calculated for each individual the hand preference (if it was the case) by means of z scores, and the strength of such preference using the handedness index (HI). Finally, we determined for each species the existence of right/left bias at group level with the t-Student test. Results Half of the white-fronted lemurs (7 of 14) showed lateralization in feeding, while only a few ring-tailed lemurs (3 of 19) showed it. In the first species, a light bias seems to emerge (5 individuals used mostly the right hand for taking the food, while only 2 used mainly the left hand), while in the second species no bias could really be appreciated. Conclusion Feeding lateralization was more accentuated in white-fronted lemur, in which a light bias towards the use of the right hand seems to be evidenced. No clear effect of age and sex on the presence and direction of lateralization could be evidenced. The results somehow contrast with what the postural theory of lateralization postulates about the preferential use of the right hand in terrestrial species.

Abstract:We assessed whether wild geladas, highly specialized terrestrial grass eaters, are lateralized for bimanual grass‐plucking behavior. Their manual dexterity was also evaluated. We assessed whether wild geladas, highly specialized terrestrial grass eaters, are lateralized for bimanual grass‐plucking behavior. According to the literature, we expected that complex motor movements in grass feeding would favor the emergence of a population‐level hand bias in these primates. In addition, we described geladas' manual behavior based on systematic observations of several individuals. Our study group included 28 individuals belonging to a population of free‐ranging geladas frequenting the Kundi plateau, Ethiopia. We filmed monkeys while feeding on grass, and hand preference and performance were coded. Geladas performed more plucking movements per second with their left hand (LH) compared to the right one and preferred their LH both to start and finish collection bouts. Also, the rhythmic movements of each hand had a significant tendency toward isochrony. Finally, geladas used forceful pad‐to‐pad precision grips, in‐hand movements, and compound grips to pluck and collect grass blades, considered the most advanced manual skills in primate species. The LH's leading role suggests an advantage of the right hemisphere in regulating geladas' bimanual grass‐feeding behavior. The tactile input from the hands and/or rhythmic hand movements might contribute to explaining this pattern of laterality. Our findings highlighted the importance of adopting multiple laterality measures to investigate manual laterality. Moreover, the need to speed up the execution time of manual foraging might be a further important factor in studying the evolution of manual laterality and dexterity in primates.

Abstract:Introduction: Bearded capuchins display a wide variety of manipulatory skills and make routine use of tools in both captivity and the wild. The efficient handling of objects in this genus has led several investigators to assume near-human thumb movements, despite a lack of anatomical studies. Methods: Here, we performed an anatomical analysis of muscles and bones in the capuchin hand. Sapajus morphological traits were quantitatively compared with those of humans, chimpanzees, gorillas, and baboons. Results: The comparative analysis indicated that the Sapajus hand is more similar to that of baboons and least similar to that of humans according to the muscles, bones, and three-dimensional data. Furthermore, these findings suggest that bearded capuchins lack true thumb opponency. Regarding manipulatory skills, they display rather primitive hand traits, with limited resources for precision grasping using the opponens pollicis. Discussion: These findings suggest that bearded capuchins' complex use of tools depends more heavily on their high cognitive abilities than on a versatile hand apparatus. These findings offer crucial insights into the evolution of primate cognition.

Variation in gaze-following between two Asian colobine monkeys

Abstract:Gaze-following is a basic cognitive ability found in numerous primate and nonprimate species. However, little is known about this ability and its variation in colobine monkeys. We compared gaze-following of two Asian colobines—François’ langurs ( Trachypithecus francoisi ) and golden snub-nosed monkeys ( Rhinopithecus roxellana ). Although both species live in small polygynous family units, units of the latter form multilevel societies with up to hundreds of individuals. François’ langurs ( N = 15) were less sensitive to the gaze of a human experimenter than were golden snub-nosed monkeys ( N = 12). We then tested the two species using two classic inhibitory control tasks—the cylinder test and the A-not-B test. We found no difference between species in inhibitory control, which called into question the nonsocial explanation for François’ langur’s weaker sensitivity to human gaze. These findings are consistent with the social intelligence hypothesis, which predicted that golden snub-nosed monkeys would outperform François’ langurs in gaze-following because of the greater size and complexity of their social groups. Furthermore, our results underscore the need for more comparative studies of cognition in colobines, which should provide valuable opportunities to test hypotheses of cognitive evolution.

Abstract:A modification of equilibrium dialysis in which alpha 1-acid glycoprotein and plasma compete directly for disopyramide has been used in conjunction with binding curves to measure the extent of the alpha 1-acid glycoprotein-disopyramide interaction. At concentrations in the therapeutic range, 80-90% of disopyramide was bound to alpha 1-acid glycoprotein for plasma from each of six healthy adults. Also, equilibrium dialysis data are presented, indicating that pH does not influence the binding of disopyramide within the therapeutic range.

Abstract:The dynamic dominance hypothesis of handedness suggests a distinct control strategy for the dominant and the non-dominant limb. The hypothesis demonstrated that the dominant proximal limb is tuned for optimal trajectory control while the non-dominant limb is tuned for a stable grasp. Whether the hypothesis can be extended to distal segments like fingers, especially during a five-fingered grasp, has been studied little. To examine this, an attempt was made to compare the prehensile synergies and force magnitudes of the dominant (DOM) and non-dominant hands (NDOM) during a 5-fingered prehension task. Participants traced a trapezoidal and inverse trapezoidal path with their thumbs on a sliding platform while holding a handle in static equilibrium. The DOM hand performed better only in the inverse trapezoid condition, exhibiting a reduced grip force and increased synergy index aligning with the dynamic dominance hypothesis. No differences were observed for the trapezoid condition, likely due to reduced task demands. The study also explored changes in anticipatory synergy adjustments between the DOM and NDOM hands, but the differences were non-significant. Overall, the DOM hand demonstrated better force coordination than the NDOM hand in challenging conditions. Applications of the study in the objective assessment of handedness were proposed.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with decreasing asymmetry of motor control in ageing. It discusses age-related changes in humans and reports a longitudinal study of hand preferences in common marmosets. An annual assessment of hand preference for holding food was recorded throughout the lifespan of 19 marmosets that lived for at least 9 years, and half of those lived for at least 11 years. Those with a left-hand preference showed a gradual reduction in the strength of their hand preference throughout adult life. No significant change in the strength of hand preference was found in right-handed marmosets. Hence, ageing has a specific effect on motor control by the right hemisphere.

Abstract:Biometric ratios of the relative length of the rays in the hand have been analyzed between primate species in the light of their hand function or phylogeny. However, how relative lengths among phalanges are mechanically linked to the grasping function of primates with different locomotor behaviors remains unclear. To clarify this, we calculated cross and triple-ratios, which are related to the torque distribution, and the torque generation mode at different joint angles using the lengths of the phalanges and metacarpal bones in 52 primates belonging to 25 species. The torque exerted on the finger joint and traction force of the flexor tendons necessary for a cylindrical grip and a suspensory hand posture were calculated using the moment arm of flexor tendons measured on magnetic resonance images, and were compared among Hylobates spp., Ateles sp., and Papio hamadryas. Finally, the torques calculated from the model were validated by a mechanical study detecting the force exerted on the phalanx by pulling the digital flexor muscles during suspension in these three species. Canonical discriminant analysis of cross and triple-ratios classified primates almost in accordance with their current classification based on locomotor behavior. The traction force was markedly reduced with flexion of the MCP joint parallel to the torque in brachiating primates; this was notably lower in the terrestrial quadrupedal primates than in the arboreal primates at mild flexion. Our mechanical study supported these features in the torque and traction force generation efficiencies. Our results suggest that suspensory or terrestrial quadrupedal primates have hand structures that can exert more torque at a suspensory posture, or palmigrade and digitigrade locomotion, respectively. Furthermore, our study suggests availability of the cross and triple-ratios as one of the indicators to estimate the hand function from the skeletal structure.

Abstract:We examined effects of dietary salt and cilazapril on ATP-driven Ca pump and Na/Ca exchange system in arterial smooth muscle of Dahl salt-sensitive (DS) rats. Twenty-four DS rats were assigned to 4 groups. H- and H+ rats were fed a high-salt diet. L- and L+ rats were fed a low-salt diet. H+ and L+ were administered cilazapril. Aortic rings were superfused with physiological saline, and isometric tension was measured. Relaxation rates of low-Na(+)-induced contractions were promoted by the removal of external Ca. Cilazapril significantly decreased blood pressure in both the high- and low-salt diet groups. Salt loading reduced relaxation rates in 1.2 mmol/l Na+, and enhanced the increase in relaxation rates from 1.2 mmol/l to normal Na+. A negative correlation was observed between Ca extrusion by the Ca pump and blood pressure, and a positive correlation was observed between Ca extrusion by Na/Ca exchange and blood pressure. The results suggest that the decrease of Ca2+ extrusion by the ATP-driven Ca pump resulting from a high-salt diet might lead to an elevation in the concentration of cellular Ca2+.
Long-Distance Vocal Signaling in White-Handed Gibbons (Hylobates lar)

Abstract:Few primates are characterized by strict territoriality, pair-bonding, and loud, complex vocalizations. Gibbons (Hylobatidae) are amongst them, with mated pairs of most species performing duet songs that may strengthen pair-bonds and/or defend a territory. Gibbon duets often are audible well beyond a pair's territory boundaries, suggesting that they function in intergroup signaling not just with close neighbors, but also with distant neighbors, yet no clear evidence for communication between distant neighbors has been found and direct tests of long-distance signaling are lacking. We studied vocal interactions in wild, white-handed gibbons ( Hylobates lar ) over two 10-day collection periods, from 340 recording hours on passive acoustic monitors at Khao Yai National Park, Thailand. Singing animals exhibited rapid control over vocal output (call inhibition) in response to short climax-coda components of distant pairs' songs, supporting the intergroup long-distance signaling hypothesis. These climax-coda sequences are the only occasions in the species' repertoire when phrases from both members of a pair regularly and unambiguously occur in rapid succession, suggesting a signaling of pair-bonded status to other groups, because only pair-bonded individuals sing in this way together. The call inhibition may allow distant receivers to estimate the location of a singing group's territory, to identify potential mates or rivals, and may provide information that facilitates natal dispersal of mature offspring. We also provide evidence to support the hypothesis that the great call may have evolved a lengthy onset to allow distant receivers to detect the great call sequence before its climax-coda components occur.

Dorsal Premotor Cortex Involved in Hand Gesture Preparation in Macaques

Abstract:Reaching to grasp movement is thought to rely upon two independent brain pathways. The dorsomedial one is involved in reaching while the dorsolateral one is dealing with grasping. However, some recent evidences suggested that the dorsomedial pathway might participate in grasp movement. Therefore, it is important to investigate whether PMd is involved in grasp planning, and if participating, what kind of role PMd played in grasp planning. In this study, two macaques monkeys were trained to grasp same object by instructing or freely choosing one of two grips, power grip or hook grip. A 96-channel microelectrode array was implanted to collect the population activity of PMd in each subject. Both single unit activity and population activity were analyzed. We found that nearly 21.0% and 26.8% units in PMd of two monkeys displayed grip selectivity during gesture planning in both instructing or freely choosing conditions. These units exhibit selectivity for different gestures when facing the identical visual stimuli (freely choosing condition). At the same time, similar activity patterns are displayed for the same gesture when faced with different selection strategies (freely choosing condition vs. instructing condition). These results show that some neurons of PMd are mainly involved in the hand shape preparation and have no obvious relationship with external visual stimuli and selection strategies.
String-pulling by the common marmoset

Abstract:Coordinated hand movements used to grasp and manipulate objects are crucial for many daily activities, such as tying shoelaces or opening jars. Recently, the string-pulling task - which involves cyclically reaching, grasping and pulling a string - has been used to study coordinated hand movements in rodents and humans. Here we characterize how adult common marmosets perform the string-pulling task and describe changes in performance across the lifespan. Marmosets (n=15, 7 female) performed a string-pulling task for a food reward using an instrumented apparatus attached to their home-cage. Movement kinematics were acquired using markerless video tracking and we assessed individual hand movements and bimanual coordination using standard metrics. Marmosets appeared to guide their actions with vision and readily performed the string-pulling task regardless of sex or age. The task required very little training and animals routinely engaged in multiple pulling trials per session despite not being under water or food control. All marmosets showed consistent pulling speed and similar hand movements regardless of age. Adult marmosets exhibited a clear hand effect, performing straighter and faster movements with their right hand despite showing idiosyncratic hand preference according to a traditional food retrieval assay. Hand effects were also evident for younger animals but seemed attenuated in the older animals. In terms of bimanual coordination, all adult marmosets demonstrated an alternating movement pattern for vertical hand positions. Two younger and two older marmosets exhibited idiosyncratic coordination patterns even after substantial experience. Abstract:In highly organized animal societies, behavioural heterogeneity of the members can be crucial for group success. In contrast to eusocial insects, in which task specialization is common, a clear division of labour is often absent in cooperatively breeding species. In these species, contributions to different tasks are sometimes positively correlated across individuals; this phenomenon is called helping syndrome. Previously, eusocial naked mole-rats, Heterocephalus glaber, were thought to display a helping syndrome consisting of burrowing, food carrying and nest building. However, previous studies combined different burrowing tasks in which the locomotive patterns varied widely, possibly missing substantial variation in the behavioural types of individuals. Therefore, it is necessary to reexamine the relations between task contributions among naked mole-rats in more detail. This study analysed six types of activities including four tasks in captive naked mole-rats, and partially confirmed the presence of a helping syndrome in nonbreeding individuals. Frequencies of different activities were significantly positively correlated across individuals in some combinations, but were not significantly correlated in other combinations. Also, individual behavioural types did not simply depend on activity time. Although age- or size-based polyethisms were found in different trends across task types, the results of the correlations between tasks remained mostly unchanged after controlling for the effects of age or body mass. This suggests large interindividual variation that could not be sufficiently explained by age- or size-based polyethisms. The partial support of a helping syndrome suggested that the task allocation system among these eusocial mammals may be more complex than previously assumed.

Abstract:We present studies of chiral nematic liquid crystals composed of flexible dimer molecules subject to large dc magnetic fields between 0 and 31 T. We observe that these fields lead to selective reflection of light depending on temperature and magnetic field. The band of reflected wavelengths can be tuned from ultraviolet to beyond the IR-C band. A similar effect induced by electric fields has been presented previously, and was explained by a field-induced oblique-heliconical director deformation in accordance with early theoretical predictions. The use of magnetic field here instead of electric field allows precise measurements of some material constants and holds promise for wireless tuning of selective reflection.

Abstract:Humans categorize body parts, reflecting our knowledge about bodies, and this could be useful in higher-level activities involving bodies. We tested whether humans' closest living relatives—chimpanzees—have the same ability using touchscreen tasks, focusing on the major parts: heads, torsos, arms, and legs. Six chimpanzees were trained to perform a body part matching-to-sample task using sets of pictures of chimpanzee bodies, where in each trial, the sample and choice pictures were the same. Five passed the training and received the test sessions, where three trial types were mixed: trained same-individual picture pairs; novel same-individual picture pairs; and novel different-individual picture pairs. All participants performed better than the chance level in all conditions and for all body parts. Further analyses showed differences in performance when the samples were different body parts. For example, the results revealed better performances for heads and torsos than arms and legs in "novel different-individual pairs". The study showed that chimpanzees can visually match and categorize body parts in this experiment setting, even across different chimpanzees' bodies, suggesting potential biological understanding. Different performances for body parts suggested a deviated categorization from humans. We hope this study will inspire future research on the evolution of body perception.
