Abstract:We present a novel compact dual-comb source based on a monolithic optical crystalline MgF$_2$ multi-resonator stack. The coherent soliton combs generated in two microresonators of the stack with the repetition rate of 12.1 GHz and difference of 1.62 MHz provided after heterodyning a 300 MHz wide radio-frequency comb. Analogous system can be used for dual-comb spectroscopy, coherent LIDAR applications and massively parallel optical communications.

Abstract:Photonic crystals, material structures in which the dielectric function varies periodically in one, two, or three dimensions, can provide exquisite control over the propagation and confinement of light. By tailoring their band structure, exceptional optical effects can be achieved, such as slow light propagation or, through the creation of photonic bandgaps, optical cavities with both a high quality factor and a small mode volume. Photonic crystal cavities have been used to realize compact nano-lasers and achieve strong coupling to quantum emitters, such as semiconductor quantum dots, color centers, or cold atoms. A useful attribute of photonic crystals is the ability to create chirped mirrors. Chirping has underpinned advances in ultra-fast lasers based on bulk mirrors, but has yet to be fully exploited in integrated photonics, where it could provide a means to engineer otherwise unattainable dispersion profiles for a range of nonlinear optical applications, including soliton frequency comb generation. The vast majority of integrated resonators for frequency combs make use of microring geometries, where only waveguide width and height are varied to engineer dispersion. Generation of frequency combs has been demonstrated with one-dimensional photonic crystal cavities made of silicon nitride, but the low index contrast prevents formation of broad soliton combs. We overcome these challenges by using a photonic-crystal Fabry-Pérot resonator made of gallium phosphide, a material with a high refractive index and a Kerr nonlinearity 200 times larger than that of silicon nitride. We employ chirped photonic crystal mirrors to provide anomalous dispersion. With subharmonic pulsed pumping at an average power of 23.6 mW, we are able to access stable dissipative Kerr frequency combs. We demonstrate soliton formation with a 3-dB bandwidth of 3.0 THz, corresponding to a pulse duration of 60 fs.

Abstract:Soliton microcombs have shown great potential in a variety of applications ranging from chip scale frequency metrology to optical communications and photonic data center, in which light coupling among cavity transverse modes, termed as intermode interactions, are long-existing and usually give rise to localized impacts on the soliton state. Of particular interest are whispering gallery mode based crystalline resonators, which with dense mode families, potentially feature interactions of all kind. While effects of narrow-band interactions such as spectral power spikes have been well recognized in crystalline resonators, that of broadband interactions remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate microcombs with broadband and dispersive intermode interactions, in home-developed magnesium fluoride microresonators with an intrinsic $\mathbf{Q}$-factor approaching 10 <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://billion.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> addition to conventional soliton comb generation in the single mode pumping scheme, comb states with broadband spectral tailoring effect have been observed, via an intermode pumping <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://scheme.Remarkably" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, footprints of both constructive and destructive interference on the comb spectrum have been observed, which as confirmed by simulations, are connected to the dispersive effects of the coupled mode <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://family.Our" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> results not only contribute to the understanding of dissipative soliton dynamics in multi-mode or coupled resonator systems, but also extend the access to stable soliton combs in crystalline microresonators where mode control and dispersion engineering are usually challenging.

Abstract:We report on the experimental demonstration of a tunable monolithic optical frequency comb generator. The device is based on the four-wave mixing in a crystalline calcium fluoride whispering gallery mode resonator. The frequency spacing of the comb is given by an integer number of the free spectral range of the resonator. We select the desired number by tuning the pumping laser frequency with respect to the corresponding resonator mode. We also observe interacting optical combs and high-frequency hyperparametric oscillation, depending on the experimental conditions. A potential application of the comb for generating narrowband frequency microwave signals is demonstrated.

Abstract:Solitons in microresonators have spurred intriguing nonlinear optical physics and photonic applications. Here, by combining Kerr and Brillouin nonlinearities in an over-modal microcavity, we demonstrate spatial multiplexing of soliton microcombs under a single external laser pumping operation. This demonstration offers an ideal scheme to realize highly coherent dual-comb sources in a compact, low-cost and energy-efficient manner, with uniquely low beating noise. Moreover, by selecting the dual-comb modes, the repetition rate difference of a dual-comb pair could be flexibly switched, ranging from 8.5 to 212 MHz. Beyond dual-comb, the high-density mode geometry allows the cascaded Brillouin lasers, driving the co-generation of up to 5 space-multiplexing frequency combs in distinct mode families. Abstract:The mid-infrared spectral range (2 to 20 \mu m) is of particular importance for chemistry, biology and physics as many molecules exhibit strong ro-vibrational fingerprints. Frequency combs - broad spectral bandwidth coherent light sources consisting of equally spaced sharp lines - are creating new opportunities for advanced spectroscopy. Mid-infrared frequency comb sources have recently emerged but are still facing technological challenges, like achieving high power per comb line and tens of GHz line spacing as required for e.g. direct comb spectroscopy. Here we demonstrate a novel approach to create such a frequency comb via four-wave mixing in a continuous-wave pumped ultra-high Q crystalline microresonator made of magnesium fluoride. Careful choice of the resonator material and design made it possible to generate a broad comb of narrow lines in the mid-infrared: a vast cascade of about 100 lines spaced by 100 GHz spanning 200 nm (~10 THz) at \lambda=2.5 \mu m. With its distinguishing features of compactness, efficient conversion, large mode spacing and high power per comb line, this novel frequency comb source holds promise for new approaches to molecular spectroscopy even deeper in the mid-infrared.

Abstract:Frequency combs are having a broad impact on science and technology because they provide a way to coherently link radio/microwave-rate electrical signals with optical-rate signals derived from lasers and atomic transitions. Integrating these systems on a photonic chip would revolutionize instrumentation, time keeping, spectroscopy, navigation, and potentially create new mass-market applications. A key element of such a system-on-a-chip will be a mode-locked comb that can be self-referenced. The recent demonstration of soliton mode locking in crystalline and silicon nitride microresonators has provided a way to both mode lock and generate femtosecond time-scale pulses. Here, soliton mode locking is demonstrated in high-Q silica resonators. The resonators produce low-phase-noise soliton pulse trains at readily detectable pulse rates—two essential properties for the operation of frequency combs. A method for the long-term stabilization of the solitons is also demonstrated, and is used to test the theoretical dependence of the comb power, efficiency, and soliton existence power on the pulse width. The influence of the Raman process on the soliton existence power and efficiency is also observed. The resonators are microfabricated on silicon chips and feature reproducible modal properties required for soliton formation. A low-noise and detectable pulse rate soliton frequency comb on a chip is a significant step towards a fully integrated frequency comb system.

Abstract:Microresonator frequency combs and their design versatility have revolutionized research areas from data communication to exoplanet searches. While microcombs in the 1550 nm band are well documented, there is interest in using microcombs in other bands. Here, we demonstrate the formation and spectral control of normal-dispersion dark soliton microcombs at 1064 nm. We generate 200 GHz repetition rate microcombs by inducing a photonic bandgap of the microresonator mode for the pump laser with a photonic crystal. We perform the experiments with normal-dispersion microresonators made from Ta2O5 and explore unique soliton pulse shapes and operating behaviors. By adjusting the resonator dispersion through its nanostructured geometry, we demonstrate control over the spectral bandwidth of these combs, and we employ numerical modeling to understand their existence range. Our results highlight how photonic design enables microcomb spectra tailoring across wide wavelength ranges, offering potential in bioimaging, spectroscopy, and photonic-atomic quantum technologies.

Abstract:Dissipative Kerr solitons from optical microresonators, commonly referred to as soliton microcombs, have been developed for a broad range of applications, including precision measurement, optical frequency synthesis, and ultra-stable microwave and millimeter wave generation, all on a chip. An important goal for microcombs is self-referencing, which requires octave-spanning bandwidths to detect and stabilize the comb carrier envelope offset frequency. Further, detection and locking of the comb spacings are often achieved using frequency division by electro-optic modulation. The thin-film lithium niobate photonic platform, with its low loss, strong second- and third-order nonlinearities, as well as large Pockels effect, is ideally suited for these tasks. However, octave-spanning soliton microcombs are challenging to demonstrate on this platform, largely complicated by strong Raman effects hindering reliable fabrication of soliton devices. Here, we demonstrate entirely connected and octave-spanning soliton microcombs on thin-film lithium niobate. With appropriate control over microresonator free spectral range and dissipation spectrum, we show that soliton-inhibiting Raman effects are suppressed, and soliton devices are fabricated with near-unity yield. Our work offers an unambiguous method for soliton generation on strongly Raman-active materials. Further, it anticipates monolithically integrated, self-referenced frequency standards in conjunction with established technologies, such as periodically poled waveguides and electro-optic modulators, on thin-film lithium niobate.

Abstract:Microcombs -- optical frequency combs generated in coherently-driven nonlinear microresonators -- have attracted significant attention over the last decade. The ability to generate two such combs in a single resonator device has in particular enabled a host of applications from spectroscopy to imaging. Concurrently, novel comb generation techniques such as synchronous pulsed driving have been developed to enhance the efficiency and flexibility of microcomb generation. Here we report on the first experimental demonstration of dual-microcomb generation via synchronous pulsed pumping of a single microresonator. Specifically, we use two electro-optically generated pulse trains derived from a common continuous wave laser to simultaneously drive two orthogonal polarization modes of an integrated silica ring resonator, observing the generation of coherent dissipative Kerr cavity soliton combs on both polarization axes. Thanks to the resonator birefringence, the two soliton combs are associated with different repetition rates, thus realizing a dual-microcomb source. To illustrate the source's application potential, we demonstrate proof-of-concept spectroscopic measurements.

Spectral Extension and Synchronisation of Microcombs in a Single Microresonator

Abstract:We demonstrate that the optical spectrum of a soliton microcomb generated in a microresonator can be coherently extended by using bichromatic pumping: one pump with a frequency in the anomalous dispersion regime of the microresonator is used to generate a bright soliton microcomb while a second pump in the normal dispersion regime both compensates the thermal effect of the microresonator and generates a second frequency comb via cross-phase modulation with the bright soliton, thus extending the spectrum of the microcomb. Experimental results for different microresonators show that the mode spacings of the two combs are synchronised, even when the combs are generated in different mode families. Numerical simulations agree well with experimental results and reveal that a bright optical pulse from the second pump is passively formed in the normal dispersion regime and trapped by the bright soliton. We believe the demonstrated technique provides an alternative way to generate broadband microcombs and multi-coloured frequency combs that can be useful for frequency metrology and spectroscopy. In addition, this method enables the selective enhancement of available optical power in specific parts of the comb spectrum.
Foundry manufacturing of octave-spanning microcombs

Abstract:Soliton microcombs provide a chip-based, octave-spanning source for self-referencing and optical metrology. We explore use of a silicon-nitride integrated photonics foundry to manufacture octave-spanning microcombs. By group-velocity dispersion engineering with the waveguide cross-section, we shape the soliton spectrum for dispersive-wave spectral enhancements at the frequencies for f-2f self-referencing. With the optimized waveguide geometry, we control the carrier-envelope offset frequency by adjusting the resonator radius. Moreover, we demonstrate the other considerations for octave microcombs, including models for soliton spectrum design, ultra-broadband resonator external coupling, low-loss edge couplers, and the nonlinear self-interactions of few-cycle solitons. This design process permits highly repeatable creation of soliton microcombs optimized for pump operation less than 100 mW, an electronically detectable offset frequency, and high comb mode power for f-2f detection. However, these design aspects must also be made compatible with the foundry fabrication tolerance of octave microcomb devices. Our experiments highlight the potential to manufacture a single-chip solution for an octave-spanning microcomb, which is the central component of a compact microsystem for optical metrology.

Abstract:Frequency combs based on nonlinear-optical phenomena in integrated photonics are a versatile light source that can explore new applications, including frequency metrology, optical communications, and sensing. We demonstrate robust frequency-control strategies for near-infrared, octave-bandwidth soliton frequency combs, created with nanofabricated silicon-nitride ring resonators. Group-velocity-dispersion engineering allows operation with a 1064 nm pump laser and generation of dual-dispersive-wave frequency combs linking wavelengths between approximately 767 nm and 1556 nm. To tune the mode frequencies of the comb, which are spaced by 1 THz, we design a photonic chip containing 75 ring resonators with systematically varying dimensions and we use 50 $^\circ$C of thermo-optic tuning. This single-chip frequency comb source provides access to every wavelength including those critical for near-infrared atomic spectroscopy of rubidium, potassium, and cesium. To make this possible, solitons are generated consistently from device-to-device across a single chip, using rapid pump frequency sweeps that are provided by an optical modulator.

Abstract:Microresonator based dual frequency combs offer an integrated photonic solution to a wide range of technological challenges, including spectroscopy, range finding, material characterization and hyperspectral imaging. These applications require a high level of mutual coherence between combs, but achieving such stability can be demanding. Here we experimentally demonstrate that comb generation exploiting the rich structure of the nonlinear electro-optic tensor in lithium niobate can generate ultra-stable dual combs, with the two combs naturally having orthogonal polarizations. We theoretically explore the application of our technique to dual frequency comb generation from the far infrared (IR) to the ultraviolet (UV). Our combs have relative linewidths as low as ~400 μHz, and require no stabilization or post-processing methods.

Rhythmic soliton interactions for integrated dual-microcomb spectroscopy

Abstract:Rotation symmetry of microresonators supports the generation of phase-locked counter-propagating (CP) solitons that can potentially miniaturize dual-comb systems. Realization of these dual-comb compatible solitons in photonic integrated circuits remains a challenge. Here, we synthesized such CP solitons in an integrated silicon nitride microresonator and observed forced soliton oscillation due to rhythmic, time-varying soliton interactions. The interactions result in seconds mutual-coherence passively. Temporal motion in the soliton streams is discerned by measuring a quadratic-scaling frequency noise peaks and an inverse quadratic-scaling microcomb sidebands. By generating a CP soliton trimer to have two synchronized solitons in one of the orbiting directions, we resolve the incapability of measuring two unsynchronized CP soliton dimer pulses by optical cross-correlation, and show CP solitons undergo complex motion trajectory. We further prove that precise dual-comb spectroscopy with an acquisition time as short as 0.6 $\mu$s is feasible using these solitons, although the temporal motion limits the dynamic range. Besides revealing soliton interactions with different group velocities, our work propels the realization of photonic integrated dual-comb spectrometers with high passive coherence.

Abstract:Soliton microcombs are helping to advance the miniaturization of a range of comb systems. These combs mode lock through the formation of short temporal pulses in anomalous dispersion resonators. Here, a new microcomb is demonstrated that mode locks through the formation of pulse pairs in coupled normal dispersion resonators. Unlike conventional microcombs, pulses in this system cannot exist alone, and instead phase lock in pairs wherein pulses in each pair feature different optical spectra. The pairwise mode-locking modality extends to multiple pulse pairs and beyond two rings, and it greatly constrains mode-locking states. Two- (bipartite) and three-ring (tripartite) states containing many pulse pairs are demonstrated, including crystal states. Pulse pairs can also form at recurring spectral windows. We obtained the results using an ultra-low-loss Si 3 N 4 platform that has not previously produced bright solitons on account of its inherent normal dispersion. The ability to generate multicolour pulse pairs over multiple rings is an important new feature for microcombs. It can extend the concept of all-optical soliton buffers and memories to multiple storage rings that multiplex pulses with respect to soliton colour and that are spatially addressable. The results also suggest a new platform for the study of topological photonics and quantum combs.

Abstract:Micro-optical frequency combs are miniaturized coherent light sources exhibiting a tremendous influence on precision spectroscopy, optical clocks, and high-speed optical communications. The rare-earth-doped lithium niobate (LN) is a promising platform to integrate the lasers and comb sources on the same chip of single material. However, microcombs generated in rare-earth-doped LN thin film (LNTF) have not yet been fully explored. To explore the protocols of generating optical combs in ytterbium-doped LNTF, the comb-like laser is studied in the 1060 nm band, and the dissipative Kerr soliton is experimentally demonstrated in the telecom band in a Z-cut wafer. The over-coupled fundamental transverse electric mode with anomalous dispersion is excited at an on-chip pump power of 75.7 mW to generate the robust bright soliton. The broadband spectrum of the Kerr soliton ranges from 1480 to 1660 nm with 110 comb lines, whose repetition rate is 197.8 GHz. The mode-locking of the soliton can be achieved as a result of the photorefractive effect of ytterbium-doped LNTF instead of complex feedback schemes. Numerical simulations are highly accordant with the experimental results. This work expands the microcomb-generating platform and increases the potential for integrated on-chip applications including precision ranging and frequency division.
