Abstract:Spider silk has been an attractive biopolymer since ancient times. Learning from both its excellent properties and spinning process, silk provides people with inspiration to develop functional fibers. Recently, inspired by shiny water droplets on a spider's web, we revealed that the capture silk of the cribellate spider would deform to have a special periodic spindle‐knots structure and hence displayed unique wettability, making it efficient at directional water‐collecting. This provides insights in designing functional fibers with unique wettability, by either creating special structures on the fiber surface, or modifying it with responsive molecules. These bioinspired functional fibers may find applications in many fields, such as water collection, smart catalysis, filtration, and sensing.

Abstract:Inspired by the geometric structure of ecribellate spider capture silk and its spinning characteristics, we propose a one-step electrohydrodynamic method to fabricate bead-on-string heterostructured fibers (BSHFs). By combining electrospinning and electrospraying strategies using a sprayable outer fluid with low viscosity and a spinnable inner fluid with high viscosity in a coaxial jetting process, hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) beads are successfully imprinted on a hydrophobic polystyrene string. It is demonstrated that the BSHFs are capable of intelligently responding to environmental change. With a change in relative humidity, the fibers show a segmented swelling and shrinking behavior in the "bead" parts whereas the "string" parts remain the same. The elastic BSHFs with alternating hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface characteristics represent a type of mesoscale analogues that block copolymers and may bring about new properties and applications. Moreover, the combined electrohydrodynamic approach developed herein should open new routes to multifunctional one-dimensional heterostructured materials.

Abstract:Owing to their exquisite geometric structures and excellent mechanical properties, spider orb webs possess an outstanding ability to capture flying prey. In this work, we report a mechanism that enhances the energy absorption ability of spider webs. Through systematic measurements of the mechanical properties of both spiral and radial silks, we find that the spiral silks feature a distinct gradient variation in the diameter and tensile stiffness along the radial direction of the web, while the radial silks have a much higher but approximately uniform stiffness. A mechanical model is proposed to reveal the functional gradient effects on the energy absorption of the web. The results show that due to the gradient variation in the mechanical properties of spiral silks, the web exhibits a nearly uniform energy absorption ability regardless of the position where a flying prey impacts the web. This optimal structural feature of the web greatly enhances its efficiency and robustness in prey capture. This work not only helps understand the optimal mechanisms of spider webs but also provides clues for designing anti-impact structures.

Abstract:Scalable computational modelling tools are required to guide the rational design of complex hierarchical materials with predictable functions. Here, we utilize mesoscopic modelling, integrated with genetic block copolymer synthesis and bioinspired spinning process, to demonstrate de novo materials design that incorporates chemistry, processing and material characterization. We find that intermediate hydrophobic/hydrophilic block ratios observed in natural spider silks and longer chain lengths lead to outstanding silk fibre formation. This design by nature is based on the optimal combination of protein solubility, self-assembled aggregate size and polymer network topology. The original homogeneous network structure becomes heterogeneous after spinning, enhancing the anisotropic network connectivity along the shear flow direction. Extending beyond the classical polymer theory, with insights from the percolation network model, we illustrate the direct proportionality between network conductance and fibre Young's modulus. This integrated approach provides a general path towards de novo functional network materials with enhanced mechanical properties and beyond (optical, electrical or thermal) as we have experimentally verified.

Abstract:The illustration of the energy‐absorption and force perception capabilities of the 3D‐printed spider web‐inspired sensor. Nature has evolved a myriad of dedicate‐designed structures that assist in prey capture. Spiders employ their web structures for vibrational sensing and prey capture, analogous to a component of a neurosensory system. Here, we propose a spider web‐inspired sensor with integrated energy‐absorption and force perception capabilities by 3D printing. The conductive carbon black/TPU composite made from TPU granules and carbon black particles are employed for 3D printing. We analyze the underlying sensing mechanism of conductive CB/TPU composites stemming from the enhanced dispersion of the CB particles. Through 3D printing method, we are allowed to regulate the structure's form, filling density, arrangement, and printing path to tailor the static mechanical properties, initial resistance, and force sensitivity of the spider‐web inspired structure. The static mechanical model for single silk of the spider‐web inspired structure is constructed. We explore the energy absorption capability of spider‐web inspired structures with different structural parameters, and demonstrate its impact perceiving characteristics at different falling height. Additionally, we assembled a circuit to visually reflect the falling height of the impacting ball through the brightness of the LED light. This study provides insights to endowing structural materials with intelligent characteristics, contributing to their practical applications in the fields of biomedical, soft robotics, and artificial skin, etc. Highlights A spider web‐inspired sensor is 3D printed with CB/TPU composites. The sensor has integrated force perception and energy‐absorption capabilities. The sensitivity capabilities can be regulated by parameter design. The mechanical model of the bioinspired structure is constructed. Its impact perceiving characteristics are demonstrated by two applications.

Abstract:One of the main problems in controlling the shape of active structures (AS) is to determine the actuations that drive the structure from the current state to the target state. Model-based methods such as stochastic search require a known type of load and relatively long computational time, which limits the practical use of AS in civil engineering. Moreover, additive errors may be produced because of the discrepancy between analytic models and real structures. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents a compound system called WAS, which combines AS with a wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN). A bio-inspired control framework imitating the activity of the nervous systems of animals is proposed for WAS. A typical example is tested for verification. In the example, a triangular tensegrity prism that aims to maintain its original height is integrated with a WSAN that consists of a central controller, three actuators, and three sensors. The result demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed concept and control framework in cases of unknown loads that include different types, distributions, magnitudes, and directions. The proposed control framework can also act as a supplementary means to improve the efficiency and accuracy of control frameworks based on a common stochastic search.

Abstract:Spider silk is a remarkable example of bio-material with superior mechanical characteristics. Its multilevel structural organization of dragline and viscid silk leads to unusual and tunable properties, extensively studied from a quasi-static point of view. In this study, inspired by the Nephila spider orb web architecture, we propose a novel design for mechanical metamaterials based on its periodic repetition. We demonstrate that spider-web metamaterial structure plays an important role in the dynamic response and wave attenuation mechanisms. The capability of the resulting structure to inhibit elastic wave propagation in sub-wavelength frequency ranges is assessed and parametric studies are performed to derive optimal configurations and constituent mechanical properties. The results show promise for the design of innovative lightweight structures for tunable vibration damping and impact protection, or the protection of large scale infrastructure such as suspended bridges.

Abstract:In this study, a novel adaptive beam string structure (ABSS) designed to cope with external loading through sensing and mechanical actuation was developed. Unlike traditional beam string structures, ABSS further contains the monitoring and controlling systems, which allows it to sense and react to loading in real-time. The active control method for ABSS based on internal force minimization was established by using the strategy search algorithm (SSA) and strategy prediction network (SPN). SSA is a global search algorithm proposed through combining the strengths of genetic algorithm and gradient descent, and SPN is an artificial neural network established by applying the backpropagation learning algorithm. The downscaled model and test scheme of ABSS were designed and deployed to clarify its effectiveness. The numerical simulation and field experiments were conducted, and simulation results agree well with measurements. Through comparative analysis of simulation and test results, the adaption of ABSS to loading and validity of control method were verified, and ABSS possesses good control capability on internal forces, which is reflected in two ways: 1) reducing the beam stress responses; and 2) improving the beam stress distribution. The research methods and conclusions of this paper can provide valuable references for the design, fabrication, and control of adaptive structures.

Abstract:To mitigate the issue of vibration transfer from rotating mechanical components on satellites in orbit to essential systems, which can compromise their functionality. This study introduces a novel vibration-damping structure inspired by the energy dissipation mechanism observed in spiderwebs during prey capture. To investigate the distribution law and transfer properties of steady-state vibration energy propagated by longitudinal, shear, and bending waves on a spiderweb vibration-damped structure subjected to simple harmonic excitation, the structural acoustic intensity technique has been developed in a matrix format for potential utilization in the aerospace industry. This paper presents a developed model of a spiderweb vibration-damping structure subjected to simple harmonic excitation. The outcomes of finite element analyses are further analyzed using a compiled software tool to evaluate the efficiency of vibration energy transfer and power flow capacity of a spiderweb damping structure in comparison to a traditional plate. This analysis includes an examination of the impact of various factors such as coupling angle, damping coefficient, elastic modulus, and density on the vibration transfer characteristics of the spiderweb damping structure. Additionally, the study involves the visualization of the overall structural acoustic intensity distribution of the spiderweb damping structure in a steady-state condition when subjected to a simple harmonic excitation, as well as the structural acoustic intensity patterns of different types of vibration waves. Furthermore, the inherent physical connection between the structural sound intensity and the structural vibration properties is determined and examined using the equations of motion. The findings indicate that the spiderweb vibration-damping structure exhibits superior energy dissipation compared to the conventional plate structure; The spiderweb vibration-damping structure experiences various types of vibration wave conversion phenomena during the transmission process. Controlling structural vibration essentially involves managing the flow of vibration energy; Selecting the appropriate coupling angle and material characteristics can aid in minimizing the power transmission within the structure.

Abstract:To improve the energy absorption properties of honeycomb structures based on the underlying mechanism of uniform stress dispersion and to effectively increase the strength of a spiderweb, a corner-enhanced spiderweb hierarchical honeycomb structure was proposed herein. This study involved a quasistatic compression test and simulation of a corner-enhanced spiderweb hierarchical structure complemented by 3D printing. The deformation pattern of the common spiderweb honeycomb (CSH) was //-shaped. However, the deformation pattern of the honeycomb after corner enhancement tended to be monolithic, forming an X shape. The deformation characteristics of both the CSH and the first-order local cellular elements were analyzed. The corner-enhanced honeycomb cellular elements dispersed the load onto the inner wall to achieve a common load-bearing effect. Further numerical simulation analysis was carried out in conjunction with the experiments, and local destruction analysis was performed for single-cell elements. Corner enhancement could increase the plastic hinge energy absorption of the structure, with a first-order corner-enhanced spiderweb honeycomb (CESH-F) exhibiting a 46.3 % improvement in specific energy absorption compared to that of a conventional CSH. The layers were reinforced to compress the load uniformly, and a third-order corner-enhanced spiderweb honeycomb (CESH-T) had a 25.7 % improvement in specific energy absorption compared to that of the CESH-F. In addition, optimization was performed for corner-enhanced spiderweb honeycomb (CESH) according to different helix radii. The effect of the radial line thickness on honeycomb-specific energy absorption was explored, and the radial line thickness was positively proportional to honeycomb-specific energy absorption. These findings offered valuable insights into the design of lightweight and high-energy-absorbing biomimetic structures.

Abstract:In soft robotics, bio-inspiration ranges from hard- to software. Orb web spiders provide excellent examples for both. Adapted sensors on their legs may use morphological computing to fine-tune feedback loops that supervise the handling and accurate placement of silk threads. The spider's webs embody the decision rules of a complex behaviour that relies on navigation and piloting laid down in silk by behaviour charting inherited rules. Analytical studies of real spiders allow the modelling of path-finding construction rules optimized in evolutionary algorithms. We propose that deconstructing spiders and unravelling webs may lead to adaptable robots able to invent and construct complex novel structures using relatively simple rules of thumb.

Abstract:Spiders use adhesive, stretchable, and translucent webs to capture their prey. However, sustaining the capturing capability of these webs can be challenging because the webs inevitably invite contamination, thus reducing its adhesion force. To overcome these challenges, spiders have developed strategies of using webs to sense prey and clean contaminants. Here, we emulate the capturing strategies of a spider with a single pair of ionic threads based on electrostatics. Our ionic spiderwebs completed consecutive missions of cleaning contamination on itself, sensing approaching targets, capturing those targets, and releasing them. The ionic spiderwebs demonstrate the importance of learning from nature and push the boundaries of soft robotics in an attempt to combine mutually complementary functions into a single unit with a simple structure.

Abstract:Spider orb web is a sophisticated structure that needs to fulfil multiple roles, such as trapping prey and transmitting web-borne signals. When building their web, heavier spiders tend to increase the pretension on the web, which seems counterintuitive since a tighter web would decrease the chances of stopping and retaining prey. In this article, we claim that heavier orb-weaving spiders increase tension on the web in order to reduce the attenuation of the vibratory signal coming from the bottom part of the web. We support our claim by first building a detailed spider web model, which is tuned by a tension-adjusting algorithm to fit the experimentally observed profiles. Then, the effects of the spider weight and the web tension on the signal transmittance properties are investigated using state-of-the-art finite element analysis tools.

Abstract:The development of structures that can adapt spontaneously to achieve desired functions in complex environments is crucial for new unmanned countermeasures, such as prey capture or net-recovery. Conventional structural optimization methods based on a singular net-like configuration may lead to functional limitations and fail to achieve specific objectives. In this study, we utilized an evolutionary algorithm that incorporated mechanical features and biological corrections to construct spider threads with advanced properties capable of efficient and reliable trapping behavior in arbitrary boundary conditions. We employed distinct thread types in different components, which achieved distinguished stiffness and strength that could not be accomplished by a single kind of thread. By assembling prestress reinforcement threads, we developed an orb-web-like trap that demonstrated effective trapping performance in experiments. The adaptive evolutionary method could be applied to design intelligent intercepting devices suited to particular functions and extreme environments, with wide application prospects in net-recovery system of UAV. Abstract:A novel bioinspired synthetic strategy for constructing heterogeneous supramolecular networks from one macromolecule is developed, providing a neat solution to designing advanced smart materials with diverse mechanical and structural adaptability. The self‐assembled network exhibits spider‐silk‐like all‐round adaptability with strain‐stiffening, high damping, and supercontraction capabilities under bio‐benign conditions, offering unique advantages for emerging bionic soft robotics and biomedical applications. Natural materials are adaptive with intriguing mechanical properties such as strain‐stiffening, high damping, and stimuli‐responsive actuation under ambient conditions, which are evolutionarily derived to adapt to variable environments. Such adaptabilities are highly desirable for advanced smart materials in soft robots and bionic applications yet rarely achieved all in one synthetic material. Inspired by the molecular chemistry and structure of spider silk, a structurally heterogeneous supramolecular network with all‐round adaptabilities is developed by evaporation‐induced self‐assembly of hydrogen‐bonded macromolecules. The supramolecular network consists of both hard (crystallites) and soft (amorphous) phases with dynamic hydrogen bonds, exhibiting strong strain, time, and hydration dependency with adaptive mechanical and structural responses to varying strain, deformation rate as well as moisture. Through multifunctional crosslinking, the network exhibits silk‐like attributes with an extensibility of >130%, intense strain‐stiffening (sixfold modulus enhancement), high damping capacity (>80%) over a wide range of strain rate, and moisture‐triggered large supercontraction (contraction ratio of >50%). Artificial materials with such combined adaptiveness under bio‐benign conditions are promising for applications in biomimetic and biomedical fields.
