Abstract:When a microbubble is subject to ultrasound, non-spherical oscillation or surface modes can be generated after many acoustic cycles. This phenomenon has wide applications, including ultrasonic cleaning, sonochemistry, and biomedical ultrasonics. Yet, the nonlinear development of the bubble shape modes over dozens of cycles is not well understood. Here, we describe a grid-free and robust model to simulate the phenomenon. A viscous pressure correction is introduced to compensate the non-zero tangential stress at the free surface in the potential flow model, based on conservation of energy. Consequently, the phenomenon is modeled using the boundary integral method, in which the compressible and viscous effects are incorporated into the model through the boundary conditions. The computations have been carried out for axisymmetric cases; however, the numerical model can be extended for three-dimensional cases in a straightforward manner. The numerical results are shown to be in good agreement for many cycles with some independent viscous and compressible theories for axisymmetric bubbles and experiments for microbubbles undergoing shape oscillation subject to ultrasound. The development of the shape oscillation of a bubble after a dozen cycles, the formation of a reentry jet and its penetration through the bubble, and the topological transformation of the bubble are simulated and analyzed in terms of the amplitude and frequency of the ultrasound. The computations and physical analysis are carried out for the development of shape modes due to a resonant volume oscillation, strong pressure wave, or the matching of the acoustic wave frequency with the shape mode frequency.

Abstract:Theoretical studies on the multi-bubble interaction are crucial for the in-depth understanding of the mechanism behind the applications of ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) in clinics. A two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric finite element model (FEM) is developed here to investigate the bubble-bubble interactions for UCAs in a fluidic environment. The effect of the driving frequency and the bubble size on the bubble interaction tendency (viz., bubbles' attraction and repulsion), as well as the influences of bubble shell mechanical parameters (viz., surface tension coefficient and viscosity coefficient) are discussed. Based on FEM simulations, the temporal evolution of the bubbles' radii, the bubble-bubble distance, and the distribution of the velocity field in the surrounding fluid are investigated in detail. The results suggest that for the interacting bubble-bubble couple, the overall translational tendency should be determined by the relationship between the driving frequency and their resonance frequencies. When the driving frequency falls between the resonance frequencies of two bubbles with different sizes, they will repel each other, otherwise they will attract each other. For constant acoustic driving parameters used in this paper, the changing rate of the bubble radius decreases as the viscosity coefficient increases, and increases first then decreases as the bubble shell surface tension coefficient increases, which means that the strength of bubble-bubble interaction could be adjusted by changing the bubble shell visco-elasticity coefficients. The current work should provide a powerful explanation for the accumulation observations in an experiment, and provide a fundamental theoretical support for the applications of UCAs in clinics.
Numerical Analysis of Single Pulsating Bubble Interaction with a Free Surface in a Viscous Compressible Liquid

Abstract:Liquid viscosity has a potential effect on bubble dynamics. This paper is concerned with bubble dynamics in a compressible viscous liquid near the free surface. The liquid-gas flow is modeled using the Eulerian finite element method coupled with the volume of fluid method. The numerical results have been shown to be in excellent agreement with those from the spherical bubble theory and experiment. Parametric studies are carried out regarding the Reynolds number Re and the stand-off parameter ?(d). It clearly demonstrated that the liquid viscosity inhibits bubble pulsation, jet flow, free surface jet, and bubble splitting. Quantitatively, as Reynolds number Re decreases, the maximum bubble volume, jet tip velocity, free surface spike, and crown height decrease, and the toroidal bubble splitting weakens. As the stand-off parameter ?(d) increases, the maximum bubble volume, jet velocity, and bubble average pressure peak increase while the height of the free surface spike decreases. Close observation reveals that the free surface crown tends to disappear at small Re or large ?(d), further indicating the complex mechanism behind the crown spike evolution.
Microbubble oscillating in a microvessel filled with viscous fluid: A finite element modeling study

Abstract:Understanding the dynamics of coated-microbubble oscillating in an elastic microvessel is important for effective and safe applications of ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) in imaging and therapy. Numerical simulations are performed based on a two-dimensional (2D) asymmetric finite element model to investigate the influences of both acoustic driving parameters (e.g., pressure and frequency) and material properties (vessel size, microbubble shell visco-elastic parameters and fluid viscosity) on the dynamic interactions in the bubble-blood-vessel system. The results show that, the constrained effect of the blood vessel along the radial direction will induce the asymmetric bubble oscillation and vessel deformation, as well as shifting the bubble resonance frequency toward the higher frequency range. For a bubble (1.5-μm radius) activated by 1-MHz ultrasound pulses in a microvessel with a radius varying between 2 and 6.5 μm, up to 26.95 kPa shear stress could be generated on the vessel wall at a driving pressure of 0.2 MPa, which should be high enough to damage the vascular endothelial cells. The asymmetrical oscillation ratio of the bubble can be aggravated from 0.12% to 79.94% with the increasing acoustic driving pressure and blood viscosity, or the decreasing vessel size and microbubble shell visco-elastic properties. The maximum compression velocity on the bubble shell will be enhanced from 0.19 to 22.79 m/s by the increasing vessel size and acoustic pressure, or the decreasing microbubble shell visco-elasticity and blood viscosity. As the results, the peak values of microstreaming-induced shear stress on the vessel wall increases from 0.003 to 26.95 kPa and the deformation degree of vessel is raised from 1.01 to 1.49, due to the enhanced acoustic amplitude, or the decreasing vessel size, blood viscosity and microbubble shell visco-elasticity. Moreover, it also suggests that, among above impact parameters, microbubble resonance frequency and UCA shell elasticity might play more dominant roles in dynamic interactions of the bubble-blood-vessel system.

Abstract:Acoustic cavitation is a very important hydrodynamic phenomenon, and is often implicated in a myriad of industrial, medical, and daily living applications. In these applications, the effect mechanism of liquid surface tension on improving the efficiency of acoustic cavitation is a crucial concern for researchers. In this study, the effects of liquid surface tension on the dynamics of an ultrasonic driven bubble near a rigid wall, which could be the main mechanism of efficiency improvement in the applications of acoustic cavitation, were investigated at the microscale level. A synchronous high-speed microscopic imaging method was used to clearly record the temporary evolution of single acoustic cavitation bubble in the liquids with different surface tension. Meanwhile, the bubble dynamic characteristics, such as the position and time of bubble collapse, the size and stability of the bubbles, the speed of bubble boundaries and the micro-jets, were analyzed and compared. In the case of the single bubbles near a rigid wall, it was found that low surface tension reduces the stability of the bubbles in the liquid medium. Meanwhile, the bubbles collapse earlier and farther from the rigid wall in the liquids with lower surface tension. In addition, the surface tension has no significant influence on the speed of the first micro-jet, but it can substantially increase the speed of second and the third micro-jets after the first collapse of the bubble. These effects of liquid surface tension on the bubble dynamics can explain the mechanism of surfactants in numerous fields of acoustic cavitation for facilitating its optimization and application.

Effect of low-frequency ultrasonic field at different power on the dynamics of a single bubble near a rigid wall

Abstract:Various bubble dynamics near the boundary in an acoustic field play a significantly important role in destructive erosion which has been associated with applications in industry cleaning, chemical engineering and biomedicine. But the effect mechanism of the high pressure on the boundary induce by single acoustic cavitation bubble has not been fully elucidated, which is vital for further application. The objective of this paper is to investigate the behaviors of a gas bubble near a rigid wall in a low frequency ultrasonic field. The temporal evolution of the bubble was recorded by means of synchronous high-speed recordings. Meanwhile, the time of bubble collapse, velocity of the bubble margin and the characteristics of the liquid jet were analyzed. In addition, the bubble dynamics were simulated based on potential flow theory coupled with the boundary integral method (BIM). Results are presented for a single bubble generated near the rigid wall with the normalized standoff distance γ = 1.85 under a wide range of ultrasonic power. The results show that the dynamics of the bubble can be divided into four phases: oscillation, movement, collapse and rebound. And when the applied ultrasonic power increases, the time of bubble collapse has a clear trend to decrease and the maximum velocity of the bubble margin increases apparently. Furthermore, the bubble behaviors after its first collapse, such as the number and the velocity of the effective jets, also vary evidently as the increase of the ultrasonic power. These results about bubble dynamics in ultrasonic field may be significant to determine or correct the main mechanisms of acoustic cavitation.

Abstract:In this paper, the volume of fluid (VOF) model in conjunction with continuum surface force (CSF) model is applied to numerically investigate the single bubble formation process in the bubble columns. Meanwhile, the hybrid method (large-eddy simulation (LES) and acoustic analogy method) is used for bubble acoustic prediction. Experimental results provide a reliable validation of the numerical results. Adaptive filtering technique and time-frequency analyses are adapted for the numerical acoustic data at the gas velocity of 0.1 m/s. The spectrum and spectrogram approaches indicate that the numerical acoustic data covers two principal frequency components, in which, one is the bubble generation rate and the other is the natural frequency of volumetric bubble oscillation. By combining the studies of flow field and acoustic signals, volumetric bubble oscillation is found to be excited by an axial water jet up into the bubble, immediately following the bubble detachment. The results of this study lead to the proposition that numerical simulation method could be applied to well understanding of the physics behind the passive acoustic emission. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Dynamic behaviour of a two-microbubble system under ultrasonic wave excitation

Abstract:Acoustic bubbles have wide and important applications in ultrasonic cleaning, sonochemistry and medical ultrasonics. A two-microbubble system (TMS) under ultrasonic wave excitation is explored in the present study, by using the boundary element method (BEM) based on the potential flow theory. A parametric study of the behaviour of a TMS has been carried out in terms of the amplitude and direction of ultrasound as well as the sizes and separation distance of the two bubbles. Three regimes of the dynamic behaviour of the TMS have been identified in terms of the pressure amplitude of the ultrasonic wave. When subject to a strong wave with the pressure amplitude of 1 atm or larger, the two microbubbles become non-spherical during the first cycle of oscillation, with two counter liquid jets formed. When subject to a weak wave with the pressure amplitude of less than 0.5 atm, two microbubbles may be attracted, repelled, or translate along the wave direction with periodic stable separation distance, depending on their size ratio. However, for the TMS under moderate waves, bubbles undergo both non-spherical oscillation and translation as well as liquid jet rebounding.
Numerical Simulations of Bubble Formation and Acoustic Characteristics from a Submerged Orifice: the Effects of Nozzle Wall Configurations

Abstract:The detachment of bubbles from an underwater nozzle inevitably generates distinct acoustic signals. This work proposes numerical simulation models to investigate the effect of different nozzle wall configurations on bubble formation and acoustic characteristics. A combination of large eddy simulation (LES) model and Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings (FW-H) equation is successfully applied to predict bubble acoustic pressures. The adaptive filtering techniques of signal processing are utilized in bubble acoustic analyses. In particular, transient spectrum based on time–frequency analyses can not only precisely count the bubbling period but also effectively measure the bubble sizes. The numerical results for bubble size are in good agreement with the theoretical data (less than 10% deviation). The main results of this research show that the structure of the nozzle wall plays a guiding role in vortex motion around bubbles. The bubble size also increases with the increase in exit-lip thickness, whereas the bubbling rate decreases.

Abstract:Understanding the ultrasound pressure-driven dynamics of microbubbles confined in viscoelastic materials is relevant for multiple biomedical applications, ranging from contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging to ultrasound-assisted drug delivery. The volumetric oscillations of spherical bubbles are analyzed using the Rayleigh-Plesset equation, which describes the conservation of mass and momentum in the surrounding medium. Several studies have considered an extension of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation for bubbles embedded into viscoelastic media, but these are restricted to a particular choice of constitutive model and/or to small deformations. Here, we derive a unifying equation applicable to bubbles in viscoelastic media with arbitrary complex moduli and that can account for large bubble deformations. To derive this equation, we borrow concepts from finite-strain theory. We validate our approach by comparing the result of our model to previously published results and extend it to show how microbubbles behave in arbitrary viscoelastic materials. In particular, we use our viscoelastic Rayleigh-Plesset model to compute the bubble dynamics in benchmarked viscoelastic liquids and solids.

Abstract:Free oscillations of a bubble in soft tissue is of relevance to a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound applications. Heat and mass transfer effects have been explored in the context of bubble oscillations in water; however, the extent to which they influence bubble oscillations in soft materials is presently unknown. Our objective is to use numerical modeling to predict bubble oscillations in viscoelastic, tissue-like media, while accounting for heat and mass transfer. We numerically solve the Keller-Miksis equation to compute the Rayleigh collapse of a spherical bubble in a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic medium with finite-strain elasticity. The energy equation is solved inside and outside the bubble, and a mass conservation equation is solved for the vapor inside the bubble; equilibrium phase change is assumed. Using linear, small-amplitude perturbation theory, we investigate the bubble response. We show how the damping and oscillatory behavior depends on the eigenvalues of the full system; in particular, the time constant does not follow a monotonic relationship with respect to shear modulus. We also identify regimes in which solving the fully partial differential equations for energy and vapor concentration is not necessary. Finally, we interpret our results in the context of ultrasound applications.

Acoustic microstreaming around an isolated encapsulated microbubble.

Abstract:An analytical theory has been developed to calculate microstreaming velocity inside and outside an encapsulated microbubble (EMB) in a viscous liquid produced by its oscillations driven by an ultrasound field, taking account of two predominant modes of the EMB's motion: a monopole (pulsation) and a dipole (translational harmonic vibrations). Analytical expressions of radial as well as tangential stresses are derived near the shell of the EMB. Numerical calculations in parameter regimes applicable to sonoporation are presented. For the calculation the following parameters unless specified otherwise are used: f=1 MHz, r(0)=2 mu m, kappa=1.4, rho(L)=1000 kg/m(3), rho(s)=1100 kg/m(3), P-0=100 kPa, mu(s)=0.05 Pa s, mu(L)=0.001 Pa s, sigma(1)=0.04 N/m, sigma(2)=0.005 N/m, and G(s)=15 MPa. The calculated results show that the streaming velocity and stresses near an EMB are functions of the mechanical properties of shell and gas. Overall, the streaming velocity and stresses for an EMB are found to be greater than those for a similar size free bubble under the same ultrasound excitation. This finding is consistent with the existing theory of acoustic streaming of an oscillating bubble near a boundary given by Nyborg (1958) [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 30, 329-339].

Abstract:The cavitation dynamics of an air-vapor mixture bubble with ultrasonic excitation can be greatly affected by the equation of state (EOS) for the interior gases. To simulate the cavitation dynamics, the Gilmore-Akulichev equation was coupled with the Peng–Robinson (PR) EOS or the Van der Waals (vdW) EOS. In this study, the thermodynamic properties of air and water vapor predicted by the PR and vdW EOS were first compared, and the results showed that the PR EOS gives a more accurate estimation of the gases within the bubble due to the less deviation from the experimental values. Moreover, the acoustic cavitation characteristics predicted by the Gilmore-PR model were compared to the Gilmore-vdW model, including the bubble collapse strength, the temperature, pressure and number of water molecules within the bubble. The results indicated that a stronger bubble collapse was predicted by the Gilmore-PR model rather than the Gilmore-vdW model, with higher temperature and pressure, as well as more water molecules within the collapsing bubble. More importantly, it was found that the differences between both models increase at higher ultrasound amplitudes or lower ultrasound frequencies while decreasing as the initial bubble radius and the liquid parameters ( e.g. , surface tension, viscosity and temperature of the surrounding liquid) increase. This study might offer important insights into the effects of the EOS for interior gases on the cavitation bubble dynamics and the resultant acoustic cavitation-associated effects, contributing to further optimization of its applications in sonochemistry and biomedicine.

Modeling stable cavitation of coated microbubbles: A framework integrating smoothed dissipative particle dynamics and the Rayleigh-Plesset equation

Abstract:Coated microbubbles are widely used in medical applications, particularly in enhanced drug and gene delivery. One of the mechanisms underlying these applications involves the shear stress exerted on the cell membrane by acoustic microstreaming generated through cavitation bubbles. In this study, we develop a novel simulation approach that combines the smooth dissipative particle dynamics (SDPD) simulation method with numerical modeling of the Rayleigh-Plesset-like equation in an ad hoc manner to simulate stable cavitation of microbubbles at microsecond and micrometer scales. Specifically, the SDPD method is utilized to model fluid dynamics, while the Rayleigh-Plesset-like equation is employed to describe bubble dynamics. Adopting a 1.5 μm coated microbubble driven by ultrasound with a frequency of 2 MHz and a pressure of 500 kPa as a representative example, we observe a high-velocity microstreaming pattern emerging around the bubble on a very small scale of a few micrometers after only a few microseconds. These spatiotemporal scales may pose challenges for experimental observation. The formation of this microstreaming arises from the opposing motion of the fluid layer next to the bubble and the fluid layers further away. Furthermore, our simulations reveal high shear stress levels of thousands of Pascals exerted on a wall located a few micrometers from the bubble. This contrasts with the shear stress values of a few Pascals calculated from theoretical models in the literature, which do not incorporate radial streaming into their theories. The implications of our results for bubble cavitation-induced pore formation on the cell membrane are discussed in some details.

Abstract:Bubble behaviors near a boundary in an ultrasonic field are the fundamental forms of acoustic cavitation and of substantial importance in various applications, such as industry cleaning, chemical engineering and food processing. The effects of two important factors that strongly affect the dynamics of a single acoustic cavitation bubble, namely, the initial bubble radius and the standoff distance, were investigated in this work. The temporal evolution of the bubble was recorded using high speed microphotography. Meanwhile, the time of bubble collapse and the characteristics of the liquid jets were analyzed. The results demonstrate that the intensity of the acoustic cavitation, which is characterized by the time of bubble collapse and the liquid jet speed, reaches the optimum level under suitable values of the initial bubble radius and the normalized standoff distance. As the initial bubble radius and the normalized standoff distance increase or decrease from the optimal values, the time of the bubble collapse increases, and the first liquid jet's speed decreases substantially, whereas the speeds of the second and third liquid jets exhibit no substantial changes. These results on bubble dynamics in an ultrasonic field are important for identifying or correcting the mechanisms of acoustic cavitation and for facilitating its optimization and application.

Abstract:In this paper we study the bubble dynamics driven by an aspherical acoustic field, based on the theory of hydrodynamics. Evolution equations for an aspherical bubble are derived under the aspherical acoustic driving. The numerical calculations show that the aspherical bubble can oscillate stably and periodically under suitable conditions, which is out of the explanation of spherical perturbation theory. Furthermore, under some controlling parameters, the aspherical distortion can either grow rapidly, leading to the bubble's breakdown, or decay gradually making the bubble spherical, which is similar to the result of the perturbation theory driven by a spherical ultrasound.
The history force on bubbles translational motion in an acoustic field

Abstract:In this study, the translational trajectory of bubble in an ultrasonic standing wave at 22.4 kHz was observed using an imaging system with a high-speed video camera. This allowed the velocities of bubble be measured when the acoustic pressure at 20kPa, 40kPa and 60kPa, which applied to indirectly measured the history force by using the acoustic and hydrodynamic forces balance model. It shown that bubbles driven at low acoustic pressure, the history force close to zero, and with the pressure increase the history force change to large, the ratio of <math>FH</math>/<math>FQS</math> from 0.33 at 40kPa to 1.73 at 60kPa, the result is different with prior research when the Reynolds numbers is large, and useful in the understanding of bubble moments in an acoustic field.

One of the mechanisms underlying these applications involves the shear stress exerted on the cell membrane by acoustic microstreaming generated through cavitation bubbles. In this study, we develop a novel simulation approach that combines the smooth dissipative particle dynamics (SDPD) simulation method with numerical modeling of the Rayleigh–Plesset-like equation in an ad hoc manner to simulate stable cavitation of microbubbles at microsecond and micrometer scales. Specifically, the SDPD method is utilized to model fluid dynamics, while the Rayleigh–Plesset-like equation is employed to describe bubble dynamics. Adopting a 1.5 μm coated microbubble driven by ultrasound with a frequency of 2 MHz and a pressure of 500 kPa as a representative example, we observe a high-velocity microstreaming pattern emerging around the bubble on a very small scale of a few micrometers after only a few microseconds. These spatiotemporal scales may pose challenges for experimental observation. The formation of this microstreaming arises from the opposing motion of the fluid layer next to the bubble and the fluid layers further away. Furthermore, our simulations reveal high shear stress levels of thousands of Pascals exerted on a wall located a few micrometers from the bubble. This contrasts with the shear stress values of a few Pascals calculated from theoretical models in the literature, which do not incorporate radial streaming into their theories. The implications of our results for bubble cavitation-induced pore formation on the cell membrane are discussed in some details.

Abstract:This paper delves into the dynamics of surface-active bubbles under low-frequency acoustic waves, with a focus on the stability effect and basic principle of rupture. The Rayleigh-Plesset equation is extended and modified based on real biological data, resulting in a model of surface-active bubbles with nonlinear surface tension. Using the Runge-Kutta method for numerical calculations, it is observed that larger acoustic wave amplitudes lead to larger bubble amplitudes. The acoustic wave frequency only affects the bubble vibration frequency in the low-frequency range, but at the resonance frequency, the bubble oscillations are violent. To further explain bubble rupture, the stress-strain relationship of the surface active layer of the bubble is studied, with the stress on the wall increasing sharply with the bubble radius. The stability of the non-spherical interface of the surface-active bubbles reveals a critical radius value, with bubbles in a stable state when the radius is smaller than this value. Through simulation, it is observed that bubbles vibrate in a steady state under stable conditions, but when the radius exceeds the critical value, a non-spherical interface appears ultimately resulting in inward depression and rupture.
