Abstract:This chapter briefly reviews the background for, and recent developments in, photochemistry and photo-applications of Cu(I) diimine complexes. The advantages of Cu(I) diimine complexes for a plethora of light-driven applications lie in intense absorption of visible light (due to the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transition), the absence of deactivating d-d excited states in a d 10 -complex, and the Earth-abundance of copper. Their disadvantages include kinetic instability, and, the curse of the 1st row transition metal complexes, structural changes in the electronic excited state caused by the change from d 10 to d 9 configuration of the Cu center upon light absorption. This change in electronic structure brings about a so-called "pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion" in the excited state, which provides a fast channel for non-radiative deactivation, reducing excited state lifetimes and precluding its employment in applications. An important research question therefore is "Could light be absorbed, and an MLCT state formed, but the ensuing structural distortion be suppressed?" To answer this question, one needs to resolve excited state dynamics down to sub-40 fs, with atomic resolution, and, in the future, transfer the knowledge gained and the methods developed to in-operando studies. It has recently become possible to interrogate excited state structural dynamics on such short timescales, and in more detail than ever before, thanks to the recent advances in femtosecond optical spectroscopies and femtosecond X-ray spectroscopic and scattering techniques. This chapter will focus on the fascinating interplay between structural distortion in the excited state, solvent interactions, and intersystem crossing which determine the excited state landscape, with the use of the above methods. The two most distinct applications of copper complexes - as photosensitizers in water purification and as components in lighting devices operating via thermally-activated delayed fluorescence – will also be discussed.
