Abstract:Monohydric alcohols have been used as promising phase change materials (PCMs) for low-temperature latent heat storage. However, the heat storage/retrieval rates are limited due to the low thermal conductivity of such alcohols. In this work, nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations were performed to study the microscopic heat conduction in example monohydric alcohols, i.e., 1-dodecanol (C12H26O), 1-tetradecanol (C14H30O), and 1-hexadecanol (C16H34O). A simplified ideal crystal model was proposed to exploit the potential for improving the thermal conductivity of monohydric alcohols. The effect of ideal crystalline structures, especially the contribution of the hydroxyl group, on the microscopic heat conduction process was analyzed. The thermal conductivity of the ideal crystals of the various monohydric alcohols was predicted to be more than twice as compared to that of their respective solids. The major thermal resistance in the ideal crystals was found around the molecular interfaces, as a result of the excellent heat conduction performance along the linear molecular chains. The calculated vibrational density of states (VDOS) and interfacial heat transfer were then investigated. When the interfaces are surrounded by hydroxyl groups as walls, strong hydrogen bond (HB) interactions were observed. The interfacial heat transfer coefficient of the ideal crystalline structures of 1-tetradecanol was found to reach up to similar to 735.6MW/m(2) W. It was elucidated that the high interfacial heat transfer rate is clearly related to the stronger intermolecular interactions.

Abstract:Ice clouds in the upper troposphere are crucial for regulating Earth's climate by affecting stratospheric humidity and the global radiative balance. A key aspect of cloud formation is heterogeneous ice nucleation, influenced by the surface properties of aerosol particles, particularly those with chemical groups capable of hydrogen bonding with water. Short-chained alcohols, such as 1-pentanol and 3-hexanol, which readily accumulate at the liquid-vapor interface, are of particular interest due to their potential impact on ice nucleation, despite their role in freezing processes being underexplored. To address this gap, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations combined with topological graph analysis (GT) were used to investigate the onset of water-alcohol surface freezing at temperatures ranging from 283 K to 192 K. Both macroscopic properties, like surface tension and solubility, and microscopic properties, including the incorporation of alcohols within the 2D-film of surface water, were analyzed. The results indicate that adsorbed films of 1-pentanol and 3-hexanol significantly influence the onset of surface freezing, with 1-pentanol forming more organized and efficiently packed surface layers compared to 3-hexanol, thus reducing surface tension more effectively. The novel application of topological graph analysis revealed the insertion of alcohol molecules into the collective hydrogenbonded 2D network at the water surface, promoting the enhanced formation of six-membered Hbonded rings at lower temperatures. This effect was particularly pronounced with 1-pentanol, which proved more efficient than 3-hexanol in facilitating the creation of ice-like structures—a critical precursor to ice formation. These findings offer valuable insights into the processes governing cloud formation and ice nucleation, with significant implications for understanding climate science and cloud dynamics.

Effect of Aluminum Nanoparticles Addition on the Evaporation of a Monodisperse Ethanol Droplet Stream

Abstract:Evaporation behavior of nanofluid droplets within a fuel cloud plays an important role in most appli-cations. Reported here is an experimental study on the evaporation characteristics of a monodisperse droplet stream of pure ethanol containing aluminum nanoparticles with varying concentrations (up to 0.3 wt.%) at different environmental temperatures (296-743 K). The recently developed phase rainbow refractometry (PRR) is used to simultaneously measure droplet temperature, size, and size variation of nanoscale. The results show that droplet evaporation under the experimental conditions still follows the classical D-2-law. Furthermore, the addition of aluminum nanoparticles gradually decreases the evapora-tion rate. And a 16.2% reduction in the evaporation rate constant is observed when n-Al concentration increases to 0.3 wt.%. The effect of interactions between droplets on evaporation is quantified by com-bining with isolated droplet evaporation constant predicted by the theoretical model. And the quantified interaction effect is compared with the proposed empirical correlation, indicating that the interaction effect on the evaporation is similar for the studied range of n-Al concentration. Freezing of Nanofluid Droplets on Superhydrophobic Surfaces

Abstract:Droplet freezing on cold superhydrophobic surfaces has been studied extensively in recent years. However, previous works are mainly focused on studying water droplet freezing behavior; little work has been conducted to investigate the freezing dynamics of nanofluid droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces. In this work, freezing morphologies of water and nanofluid droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces with different roughnesses were compared and studied. The nanofluid droplets underwent a shape transition from spherical to flat plateau morphology, different from the frozen water droplets that exhibit a sharp cusp. The size of the flat plateau for the frozen nanofluid droplet increases with increasing nanoparticle concentration. The underlying mechanism of the morphology change during the freezing process was elucidated using COMSOL Multiphysics. Compared to the frozen water droplets, more air bubbles are trapped inside the frozen nanofluid droplets, which might be ascribed to the fast freezing speed of the nanofluid droplets. These results can provide important insights for many applications that require freezing of nanofluid droplets, such as material solidification, three-dimensional (3D) printing, as well as phase change enhancement.
Water nanodroplet thermodynamics: quasi-solid phase-boundary dispersivity.

Abstract:It has long been puzzling that water nanodroplets undergo simultaneously &quot;supercooling&quot; at freezing and &quot;superheating&quot; at melting. Recent progress (Sun et al. J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2013, 4, 2565, 3238) enables us to resolve this anomaly from the perspective of hydrogen bond (O:H-O) specific heat disparity. A superposition of the specific heat ηx(T) curves for the H-O bond (x = H) and the O:H nonbond (x = L) defines two intersecting temperatures that form the ice/quasi-solid/liquid phase boundaries. Molecular undercoordination (with fewer than four nearest neighbors in the bulk) stretches the ηH(T) curve by raising the Debye temperature ΘDH through H-O bond shortening and phonon stiffening. The ηH(T) stretching is coupled with the ηL(T) depressing because of the Coulomb repulsion between electron pairs on oxygen ions. The extent of dispersion varies with the size of a droplet that prefers a core-shell structure configuration-the bulk interior and the skin. Understandings may open an effective way of dealing with the thermodynamic behavior of water droplets and bubbles from the perspective of O:H-O bond cooperativity.

Abstract:Infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG) has been used to obtain the surface vibrational spectra of CH stretches for liquid n-eicosane and a monolayer film of 1-dodecanol in equilibrium with an excess drop on water. The SFG data for surface freezing of eicosane represent a unique study of ordering among nonpolar surface molecules and are consistent with the formation of a solid monolayer of nearly vertical, all-trans molecules at the free liquid surface. For the dodecanol film, the result indicates that the alcohol molecules are nearly all-trans and erect both before and after surface crystallization.
Ice Formation via Deposition Mode Nucleation on Bare and Alcohol-covered Graphite Surfaces

Abstract:Deposition of water on aerosol particles contributes to ice cloud formation in the atmosphere with implications for the water cycle and climate on Earth. The heterogeneous ice nucleation process is influenced by physico-chemical properties of the substrate, but the mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Here, we report on ice formation on bare and alcohol-covered graphite at temperatures from 175 to 213 K, probed by elastic helium and light scattering. Water has a low wettability on bare and butanol-covered graphite resulting in the growth of rough ice surfaces. In contrast, pre-adsorbed methanol provides hydrophilic surface sites and results in the formation of smooth crystalline ice; an effect that is pronounced also for sub-monolayer methanol coverages. The alcohols primarily reside at the ice surface and at the ice-graphite interface with a minor fraction being incorporated into the growing ice structures. Methanol has no observable effect on gas/solid water vapor exchange whereas butanol acts as a transport barrier for water resulting in a reduction in ice evaporation rate at 185 K. Implications for the description of deposition mode freezing are discussed.

Marangoni-driven freezing dynamics of supercooled binary droplets

Abstract:Solidification of droplets is of great importance to various technological applications, drawing considerable attention from scientists aiming to unravel the fundamental physical mechanisms. In the case of multicomponent droplets undergoing solidification, the emergence of concentration gradients may trigger significant interfacial flows that dominate the freezing dynamics. Here, we experimentally investigate the fascinating snow-globe freezing dynamics of supercooled ethanol-water droplets. We reveal that these unique freezing dynamics are driven by solidification-induced solutal Marangoni flow within the droplets. We quantitatively characterize the concentration-dependent migration and growth dynamics of ice particles, tightly connecting them to the solutal Marangoni effect and the associated convective heat transfer. Moreover, we show that the final wrapping state of droplets can be modulated by the concentration of ethanol. Our findings may pave the way for novel insights into the physicochemical hydrodynamics of multicomponent liquids undergoing phase transitions.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out for glycerol–water–sodium chloride ternary solution due to its important role in cryopreservation engineering. The radial distribution functions for atom pairs potentially related to C–H ··· O and O–H ··· O hydrogen bonds were calculated. The radial distribution functions for the H (connected to C)–O atom pair do not exhibit peaks between 2 and 3 Å, whereas the radial distribution functions for the C–O atom pair exhibit distinct peaks between 3 and 4 Å. The reason for this is because most C–H ··· O geometries are bent and deviate from linearity. The ratios of acceptor to donor numbers for water and glycerol molecules decrease as the solute concentration increases. A characteristic concentration has been found that divides solutions with different mechanisms. Below the characteristic concentration, the melting temperature is linearly related to the ratio of acceptor to donor number for water molecules, whereas above the characteristic concentration, the melting temperature is linearly related to the ratio of acceptor to donor number for glycerol molecules. Further studies indicate that the relations are independent of hydrogen bonding criteria and temperature.
Deactivation of Microbubble Nucleation Sites by Alcohol-Water Exchange.

Abstract:The ethanol-water exchange process is one of the standard methods of generating nanobubbles at a solid-water interface. In this work, we examine whether the nanobubbles formed by the solvent exchange can initiate microbubble formation as the temperature increases, thus acting as nuclei. This, however, is not the case: the nanobubbles are stable and do not facilitate microbubble formation. Instead, the process of solvent exchange, which aids the formation of nanobubbles and even microbubbles on some hydrophobic substrates under ambient conditions, suppresses microbubble nucleation on graphite and hydrophilic micropit-decorated substrates at high temperature (i.e., deactivates the nucleation sites for microbubble formation). We ascribe this behavior to the prewetting of the surface by the alcohol and the stability of the nanobubbles to the temperature increase. The findings in this study have implications for the prevention of bubble formation for a range of applications.

Abstract:This paper presents a study on the impact of the wettability between the nanofluids and the metallic surface on the ice nucleation. The nanofluids consist of a basic liquid and the additive nanoparticles. Pure water is used as the basic fluid, and the nanoparticles, such as α-Al2O3, γ-Al2O3 and SiO2, are used as the additives. Three stainless steel vessels, in which the cooling surface has the roughness of 0.149μm, 0.433μm, and 0.729μm, respectively, were used to achieve different wettablities. Based on the relationship between the contact angle (θ) and the critical nucleation radius (r∗), the nucleation mechanism on the metallic surface has been improved. When the cooling surface of the vessel is hydrophilic, the change of the contact angle (θ) would impose a greater influence on the critical nucleation radius (r∗) compared with when the surface is hydrophobic, resulting in a great change of the temperature at rupture of supercooling (TRSC). And through adding different nanoparticles into the pure water, the different effects on decreasing the supercooling degree (ΔTSC) were observed, which strongly lies on the wettability and the crystal structure similarity between the ice and the additives.

Abstract:Droplet impacting and freezing on solid surfaces are ubiquitous in nature and crucial to many industrial applications, while the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon remains elusive. In this paper, the effect of surface wettability on dynamic behaviors and freezing mechanism of a water droplet impacting on a solid substrate at a fixed Weber number of 200 has been experimentally investigated at various surface temperatures from −35.2 to −10 °C. With the decrease in temperature of the superhydrophobic surface, the complete rebound behavior moves to partial rebound and ultimately to full adhesion, mainly due to the competition between the fluid dynamics and heat transfer processes. An intense prompt splashing is achieved by altering the surface wettability toward superhydrophobicity. Raising the water repellency enhances the lift of the lamella rim during the initial droplet spreading. The receding velocity on superhydrophobic surfaces is about ten times larger than that on hydrophobic surfaces, while it is barely affected by the surface and droplet temperatures. Three distinct freezing shapes are observed in the experiments, namely, spherical ice, irregular ice, and central cap ice, and those can be explained through the analysis of the differences between the time for the onset of freezing and receding time. Some cases of droplet freezing after full receding, also known as spherical ice, include two freezing stages. First, the liquid–gas interface freezes within a short period. Next, the remaining liquid freezes upward because the evaporation through the liquid–gas interface leads to the temperature of this interface being lower than the liquid–surface interface temperature. A phase diagram described by the final equilibrium contact factor and the surface temperature reveals the conditions to form different freezing processes or to remain a liquid state.

Fast-freezing kinetics inside a droplet impacting on a cold surface

Abstract:Freezing or solidification of impacting droplets is omnipresent in nature and technology, be it a rain droplet falling on a supercooled surface, be it in inkjet printing where often molten wax is used, be it in added manufacturing or in metal production processes or in extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) for the chip production where molten tin is used to generate the EUV radiation. For many of these industrial applications, a detailed understanding of the solidification process is essential. Here, by adopting a totally new optical technique in the context of freezing, namely TIR (Total-Internal-Reflection), we elucidate the freezing kinetics during the solidification of a droplet while it impacts on an undercooled surface. We show for the first time that at sufficiently high undercooling a peculiar freezing morphology exists that involves sequential advection of frozen fronts from the centre of the droplet to its boundaries. This phenomenon is examined by combining elements of classical nucleation theory to the large scale hydrodynamics on the droplet scale, bringing together two subfields which traditionally have been quite separated. Furthermore, we report a peculiar self-peeling phenomenon of a frozen splat that is driven by the existence of a transient crystalline state during solidification.

Role of Nanoscale Interfacial Proximity in Contact Freezing in Water

Abstract:Contact freezing is a mode of atmospheric ice nucleation in which a collision between a dry ice nucleating particle (INP) and a water droplet results in considerably faster heterogeneous nucleation. The molecular mechanism of such enhancement is, however, still a mystery. While earlier studies had attributed it to collision-induced transient perturbations, recent experiments point to the pivotal role of nanoscale proximity of the INP and the free interface. By simulating heterogeneous nucleation of ice within INP-supported nanofilms of two model water-like tetrahedral liquids, we demonstrate that such nanoscale proximity is sufficient for inducing rate increases commensurate with those observed in contact freezing experiments, but only if the free interface has a tendency to enhance homogeneous nucleation. Water is suspected of possessing this latter property, known as surface freezing propensity. Our findings therefore establish a connection between surface freezing propensity and kinetic enhancement during contact nucleation. We also observe that faster nucleation proceeds through a mechanism markedly distinct from classical heterogeneous nucleation, involving the formation of hourglass-shaped crystalline nuclei that conceive at either interface, and that have a lower free energy of formation due to the nanoscale proximity of the interfaces and the modulation of the free interfacial structure by the INP. In addition to providing valuable insights into the physics of contact nucleation, our findings can assist in improving the accuracy of heterogeneous nucleation rate measurements in experiments, and in advancing our understanding of ice nucleation on nonuniform surfaces such as organic, polymeric and biological materials.

Abstract:Interfacial phenomena linked to the behavior of bound water, organic solvents (co‐sorbates, dispersion media), hydrogen, methane, acids/bases, and salts bound to various silicas, polymers, and carbon materials were analyzed vs. temperature and concentrations using 1H NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and other methods. The material characteristics were studied using microscopy, infrared spectroscopy (IR), small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), and nitrogen adsorption. Confined space effects (CSE) result in enhanced freezing point depression (FPD) and stronger diminution of solvent activity and colligative properties of liquid mixtures in narrower pores. Short hydrophobic functionalities (Si‐CH3, Si(CH3)2) at a silica surface and the presence of nanopores result in differentiation of bound water into weakly (WAW, δH=0.2‐2.0 ppm) and strongly (SAW, δH=4‐6 ppm) associated waters of smaller solvent activity in smaller clusters located in narrower pores and unfrozen below a bulk freezing point. These effects are enhanced in hydrophobic dispersion media. Hydrophobic liquids could displace bound water into narrower pores inaccessible for their molecules larger than water and/or into broader pores to reduce contact area between immiscible liquids. The observed phenomena depend on sorbent/sorbate kinds and play an important role on practical applications of various sorbents.

Abstract:Surface icing affects the safety and performance of numerous processes in technology. Previous studies mostly investigated freezing of individual droplets. The interaction among multiple droplets during freezing is investigated less, especially on nanotextured icephobic surfaces, despite its practical importance as water droplets never appear in isolation, but in groups. Here we show that freezing of a supercooled droplet leads to spontaneous self-heating and induces strong vaporization. The resulting, rapidly propagating vapor front causes immediate cascading freezing of neighboring supercooled droplets upon reaching them. We put forth the explanation that, as the vapor approaches cold neighboring droplets, it can lead to local supersaturation and formation of airborne microscopic ice crystals, which act as freezing nucleation sites. The sequential triggering and propagation of this mechanism results in the rapid freezing of an entire droplet ensemble resulting in ice coverage of the nanotextured surface. Although cascade freezing is observed in a low-pressure environment, it introduces an unexpected pathway of freezing propagation that can be crucial for the performance of rationally designed icephobic surfaces.
Desublimation Frosting on Nanoengineered Surfaces

Abstract:Ice nucleation from vapor presents a variety of challenges across a wide range of industries and applications including refrigeration, transportation, and energy generation. However, a rational comprehensive approach to fabricating intrinsically icephobic surfaces for frost formation-both from water condensation (followed by freezing) and in particular from desublimation (direct growth of ice crystals from vapor)-remains elusive. Here, guided by nucleation physics, we investigate the effect of material composition and surface texturing (atomically smooth to nanorough) on the nucleation and growth mechanism of frost for a range of conditions within the sublimation domain (0 C to -55C; partial water vapor pressures 6 to 0.02 mbar). Surprisingly, we observe that on silicon at very cold temperatures-below the homogeneous ice solidification nucleation limit (< -46 C)-desublimation does not become the favorable pathway to frosting. Furthermore we show that surface nanoroughness makes frost formation on silicon more probable. We experimentally demonstrate at temperatures between -48 C and -55 C that nanotexture with radii of curvature within one order of magnitude of the critical radius of nucleation favors frost growth, facilitated by capillary condensation, consistent with Kelvin's Equation. Our findings show that such nanoscale surface morphology imposed by design to impart desired functionalities-such as superhydrophobicity-or from defects, can be highly detrimental for frost icephobicity at low temperatures and water vapor partial pressures (< 0.05 mbar). Our work contributes to the fundamental understanding of heterogeneous phase transitions well within the equilibrium sublimation domain and has implications for applications such as travel, power generation, and refrigeration.

Three distinct icing paradigms are found, namely the widely observed Central-Pointy Icing paradigm (C P I), the annular paradigm with Exterior Freezing front First ( E FF), and the annular paradigm with Interior Freezing front First ( I FF). High impact velocities and low surface temperatures are beneficial to the I FF icing paradigm. Upon decreasing the impact velocity and/or increasing the surface temperature, the I FF paradigm transits to E FF and ultimately to C P I. The interior freezing front occurring prior to the exterior one is mainly attributed to the small difference of the thickness between the central and peripheral liquid, and the large temperature difference between the droplet and liquid-substrate interface. Raising the impact velocity and surface wettability enhances droplet spreading, resulting in a small thickness difference. The liquid-substrate interface temperature is collectively determined by surface temperature, density, thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity of the solid surface. A freezing paradigm map described by the dimensionless temperature and the maximum spreading diameter is proposed to evaluate the conditions under which one of the three distinct freezing paradigms appears. A large spreading area and a low liquid-substrate interface temperature are prerequisites for the emergence of I FF paradigm.

Abstract:We investigate the ice-templating behaviour of alumina suspensions by in-situ X-rays radiography and tomography. We focus here on the formation and structure of the transitional zone, which takes place during the initials instants of freezing. For many applications, this part is undesirable since the resulting porosity is heterogeneous, in size, morphology and orientation. We investigate the influence of the composition of alumina suspensions on the formation of the transitional zone. Alumina particles are dispersed by three different dispersants, in various quantities, or by chlorhydric acid. We show that the height and the morphology of the transitional zone are determined by the growth of large dendritic ice-crystals growing in a supercooled state, and growing much faster than the cellular freezing front. When the freezing temperature decreases, the degree of supercooling increases. This results in a faster freezing front velocity and increases the dimensions of the transitional zone. It is therefore possible to adjust the dimensions of the transitional zone by changing the composition of alumina suspensions. The counter-ion Na+ has the most dramatic influence on the freezing temperature of suspensions, yielding a predominance of cellular ice crystals instead of the usual lamellar crystals.

Abstract:The phenomenon of droplet freezing at low temperatures poses significant challenges in multiple domains, such as power transmission, communications, and aerospace. Impurities in the atmosphere have a complex impact on the process itself. The process of directly monitoring the production of crystal nuclei during the solidification of water poses substantial challenges, primarily attributed to factors such as the transparent nature of ice crystals and constraints inherent in experimental techniques. This study presents the development of a complete simulation system comprising substrates, nano-droplets, and impurities through the utilization of the molecular dynamics simulation method and LAMMPS simulation software. The process of icing is analyzed from microcosmic viewpoint for greater clarity. The process through which liquid droplets undergo ice formation is elucidated. A two-dimensional density curve was used to fit the contact angle of the nano-droplets. For droplets containing different quantity and distribution state of impurity, the beginning and the total freezing times are recorded. The findings indicate that the presence of impurity clusters have a substantial impact on the wettability of water droplets and the transition from the liquid to the solid phase. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that dispersed impurity clusters have excellent icing retardation properties. This study reveals a microscopic mechanism that may have implications for the use of impurity particles to directly achieve anti-icing functions in the atmosphere.
