Abstract:Metasurface antennas (MAs) have been proposed as innovative alternatives to conventional bulky configurations for satellite applications because of their low profile, low cost, and high gain. The general method of surface impedance modulation for designing MAs is complicated, and achieving broad operation bandwidth remains a challenge because of its high dispersion response. We propose a novel and easy technique to control cylindrical surface waves radiated by a phase-tuning metasurface. Simultaneously, this technique exhibits a considerably wide working bandwidth. A detailed analysis of the radiation mechanism is discussed. A left-hand circularly polarized (LHCP) antenna and a right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) antenna that are based on the phase-tuning metasurface are simulated and measured. The measured fractional 3-dB gain bandwidth and gain are higher than 17% and 15.57 dBi, respectively, which are consistent with the simulated results. Moreover, 30% 3-dB axial ratio is achieved for the LHCP and RHCP antennas. To the best knowledge of the authors, it is for the first time to realize a circularly polarized broadband MA by using the phase-tuning mechanism. The approach can be regarded as a new starting point for antenna design, thereby paving the way for the development of broadband and low-profile antennas for future satellite communication.
Efficient Coupling of Evanescent Waves in Rectangular Waveguides Based on Ultrathin Planar Capacitive Metasurfaces

Abstract:This work proposes an approach to enable efficient coupling of evanescent waves below the cutoff frequency of a standard rectangular waveguide(RWG) system based on ultrathin planar capacitive metasurfaces(CMSs). It is demonstrated that the CMS at the RWG’s cross-section can couple the evanescent wave from one port to the other, and thus enable an efficient frequency-selective transmission below the cutoff frequency. Theoretical formulas, together with the equivalent circuit, are presented to quantitatively illustrate the operational mechanism of the proposed approach. The performance characteristics, including out-of-band suppression, Q-factor, transmission loss, and coupling bandwidth, are studied in a comprehensive manner. Three CMS samples with different surface impedance values are designed, fabricated, and measured.The measurement results show good agreement with the numerical values, validating their highly efficient evanescent wave coupling performance characteristic at selected frequencies below the cutoff frequency, with approximately 100% transmission efficiency. Benefiting from the admirable low-frequency coupling performance,this approach has potential applications in many miniaturized and high-performance transmission components, such as compact evanescent wave resonators, filters, and antennas.

Abstract:The metasurface concept has emerged as an advantageous reconfigurable antenna architecture for beam forming and wave-front shaping, with applications that include satellite and terrestrial communications, radar, imaging, and wireless power transfer. The metasurface antenna consists of an array of metamaterial elements distributed over an electrically large structure, each subwavelength in dimension and with subwavelength separation between elements. In the antenna configuration we consider, the metasurface is excited by the fields from an attached waveguide. Each metamaterial element can be modeled as a polarizable dipole that couples the waveguide mode to radiation modes. Distinct from the phased array and electronically-scanned-antenna architectures, a dynamic metasurface antenna does not require active phase shifters and amplifiers but rather achieves reconfigurability by shifting the resonance frequency of each individual metamaterial element. We derive the basic properties of a one-dimensional waveguide-fed metasurface antenna in the approximation in which the metamaterial elements do not perturb the waveguide mode and are noninteracting. We derive analytical approximations for the array factors of the one-dimensional antenna, including the effective polarizabilities needed for amplitude-only, phase-only, and binary constraints. Using full-wave numerical simulations, we confirm the analysis, modeling waveguides with slots or complementary metamaterial elements patterned into one of the surfaces.

Abstract:Metamaterial is an artificial material with unique material properties that cannot be found in a naturally existing one, and hence it is able to perform functions that a conventional material cannot do. Consequently, it has shown great potential in various engineering applications such as resonance coupled mid-range wireless power transmission (R-WPT) systems. However, the analysis and design of an application-oriented metamaterial include both the unit cells and their combinations, and thus are very complex. Moreover, the performance of a metamaterial is very sensitive to uncertainties in both manufacturing and operating conditions. In this regard, a two-phase methodology for robust design optimizations of metamaterial slabs in R-WPT applications is proposed and applied to the design optimization of a prototype R-WPT system with promising results.
Full-space Dual-Helicity Decoupled Metasurface for a High-Efficiency Multi-Folded Reflective Antenna.

Abstract:The independent tailoring of electromagnetic waves with different circular-polarized (CP) wavefront in both reflection and transmission channels is of broad scientific and technical interest, offering ultimate degrees of freedom in designing advanced devices with the merits of functionality integration and spatial exploitation. However, most metasurfaces only provide dependent wavefront control of dual-helicity in a single channel, restricting their applications to limited practical scenarios. Herein, we propose a full-space dual-helicity decoupled metasurface and apply it to assemble a multi-folded reflective antenna (MFRA) in the microwave regime. A multilayered chiral meta-atom is designed and optimized to reflect a particular helical wave while allowing the orthogonal helical wave to penetrate through, with simultaneous full span of phase modulations in both channels. When a uniform reflection and a hyperbolic transmission phase profile is imposed simultaneously on the metasurface in a polarization-selective manner, it can be engineered to conduct specular reflection for one helical wave and convergent transmission of the other helical wave. Combining the proposed metasurface with a metallic plate as a bottom reflector and an integrated microstrip patch antenna in the center of metasurface as a feed, a MFRA is realized with a low profile, high efficiency, and high polarization purity in a broad frequency band. The proposed design method of the dual-helicity decoupled metasurface and its antenna application provide opportunities for high-performance functional devices, promising more potential in future communication and detection systems.
Equivalence of Polarizability and Circuit Models for Waveguide-Fed Metamaterial Elements

Abstract:A common variant of a metasurface antenna consists of an array of metamaterial elements coupled to a waveguide feed. The guided wave excites the metamaterial elements, coupling energy from the waveguide mode to radiation. Under appropriate conditions, each sub-wavelength metamaterial element can be modeled as a polarizable dipole, with the polarizability determined by an extraction procedure from the computed or measured waveguide scattering parameters. Here we establish the equivalence of this polarizability description of a metamaterial element with an equivalent circuit model, providing an additional tool for metasurface design that offers significant insight and a path towards efficiently modeling very large apertures. With this equivalence established, more complicated external circuits that include lumped elements and devices such as diodes and transistors can be integrated into the metamaterial element, which can then be transformed into an equivalent polarizability for modeling in the coupled dipole framework. We derive appropriate circuit models for several basic metamaterial elements, which provide direct relationships between the equivalent circuit parameters of an element and its effective polarizability. These expressions are confirmed using scattering parameters for several example structures obtained via full-wave simulations.

Abstract:The metasurface has the ability to regulate electromagnetic waves, which is widely used for polarization state control, impedance bandwidth expansion, vortex beam generation, and high-directional antennas. Research shows that the substrate of the metasurface has a significant impact on the performance of the antenna. The equivalent dielectric constant of composite dielectric materials is investigated by using the characteristic mode analysis (CMA). A novel metasurface with composite dielectric substrate is proposed. The composite dielectric material consists of a substrate with a dielectric constant of 3.55 and an air gap. The calculation results of the effective dielectric constant of composite dielectric materials are basically consistent with the simulation results. Based on this composite dielectric material, a metasurface antenna is designed. S 11 is less than-10dB in the frequency range of 5.22-7.87 GHz. The peak boresight gain is 10.44 dBi at 6.5 GHz.

Abstract:This article introduces a novel, single‐layer, low‐profile, circularly polarized metasurface antenna. Through characteristic mode analysis, the optimization of a 3× 3 rectangular metasurface structure was performed. Two orthogonal modes were selected as the operating modes, and improvements to the metasurface structure were made to achieve a 90∘ phase difference between these modes. The adoption of a coplanar waveguide structure enables the excitation of the metasurface, facilitating circularly polarized radiation performance for the two selected modes. The antenna's dimensions are 40 mm × 40 mm × 3 mm, featuring a −10 dB impedance bandwidth of 27.8% (4.49–5.94 GHz). Abstract:A reactance-loaded polarization conversion metasurface (PCMS) is presented and exploited to realize a metasurface antenna (MTA) with both low radar cross section (RCS) and broadband radiation. Distinct from the conventional low-RCS PCMS, a metallic surface with etched open and closed slits is integrated into a PCMS consisting of double L-shaped particle pairs. Due to the edge capacitance induced by open slits and the surface inductance imposed by closed slits, the PCMS is endowed with reactance features that act as a perturbation to modulate the near-field interactions, thereby expanding the polarization conversion bandwidth. Besides, the reactance-loaded metallic surface, which has the same period as L-shaped particle pairs, combined with the grounded substrate, constitutes a broadband metasurface radiator. With the help of characteristic mode analysis, a linearly polarized aperture-coupled PCMS antenna is proposed, which effectively stimulates two resonant modes with broadside radiation to help bring about a broad operating bandwidth of 45.52%. Subsequently, the checkerboard-layout PCMS array is coupled to a sequentially feeding network through apertures on the ground plane, implementing a circularly polarized MTA with a broad 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 20.11%. Relying on phase cancellation and outstanding polarization conversion behaviors, an ultrawideband RCS reduction bandwidth of 7–39 GHz (139.13%) is also available.

Abstract:We develop a fast, accurate, and robust technique to model the electromagnetic response of a two-dimensional (2D) waveguide-fed metasurface aperture. The geometry under consideration consists of a parallel-plate waveguide with an array of subwavelength, complementary metamaterial elements patterned into one of the conducting surfaces. To determine the radiated field, we model each radiating element as a polarizable dipole, and account for mutual interactions among elements via guided and radiated fields by applying a coupled dipole framework. Using full-wave simulations of parallel-plate waveguides with two types of metamaterial elements, we confirm the validity of the proposed coupled dipole model and demonstrate the ability to predict radiation patterns corresponding to arbitrarily arranged elements. We explore the importance of including the mutual coupling among metamaterial elements to arrive at accurate field predictions. The coupled dipole modeling framework presented is scalable to extremely large apertures and can form the foundation for a general, efficient, yet simple aperture analysis and synthesis tool.
Equivalent Energy Level Hybridization Approach for High-Performance Metamaterials Design

Abstract:Metamaterials have microscopic physical properties highly analogous to real materials, since their characteristic frequencies behave as equivalent energy levels, providing an efficient route to deal with stacked meta-atoms with strong interactions. Based on the hybridization of equivalent energy levels theory, in this paper, we designed transmissive multilayer metasurfaces to convert the handedness of a circularly polarized wave with high efficiency in a broad bandwidth. In stacked metasurfaces, the equivalent energy levels gradually split with an increasing layer number (i.e. meta-atoms). Their hybridization introduces trapped modes with near-unity transmission, contributes to a near-π transmission phase difference and promotes the split modes overlapping to form a broad bandwidth. Through theoretical calculations, numerical simulations and experimental measurements, a four-layer metasurface was shown to exhibit a high transmission conversion coefficient (80–98%) of a circularly polarized wave covering the whole X-band. Furthermore, a multifunctional meta-lens with broad bandwidth was designed and fabricated based on the Pancharatnam-Berry phase to converge or diverge incident Gaussian beams with different handedness at a high efficiency rate.
A Metamaterial Surface Avoiding Loss from the Radome for a Millimeter-Wave Signal-Sensing Array Antenna

Abstract:Radar systems are a type of sensor that detects radio signals reflected from objects located a long distance from transmitters. For covering a longer range and a higher resolution in the operation of a radar, a high-frequency band and an array antenna are measures to take. Given a limited size to the antenna aperture in the front end of the radar, the choice of a millimeter-wave band leads to a denser layout for the array antenna and a higher antenna gain. Millimeter-wave signals tend to become attenuated faster by a larger loss of the covering material like the radome, implying this disadvantage offsets the advantage of high antenna directivity, compared to the C-band and X-band ones. As the radome is essential to the radar system to protect the array antenna from rain and dust, a metamaterial surface in the layer is suggested to meet multiple objectives. Firstly, the proposed electromagnetic structure is the protection layer for the source of radiation. Secondly, the metasurface does not disturb the millimeter-wave signal and makes its way through the cover layer to the air. This electromagnetically transparent surface transforms the phase distribution of the incident wave into the equal phase in the transmitted wave, resulting in an increased antenna gain. This is fabricated and assembled with the array antenna held in a 3D-printed jig with harnessing accessories. It is examined in view of S21 as the transfer coefficient between two ports of the VNA, having the antenna alone and with the metasurface. Additionally, the far-field test comes next to check the validity of the suggested structure and design. The bench test shows around a 7 dB increase in the transfer coefficient, and the anechoic chamber field test gives about a 5 dB improvement in antenna gain for a 24-band GHz array antenna.

Abstract:A programmable metasurface antenna based on electrically tunable elements operating in 5G millimeter‐wave band, which has the features of low cost, easy manufacturing, low profile, easy integration with planar circuits is proposed in this paper. The prototype consists of a 128‐element metasurface array, an 8‐channel beamforming chip as equal amplitude power divider networks and a control network. Elements mounted with varactors to realize different states are controlled by DC bias signal from the back of a printed circuit board (PCB). By assigning different voltage values, array coding can be dynamically changed thereby realizing beam steering. Both element dimensions and its location along SIW are optimized to better antenna performance. Experiment results show that the proposed metasurface can achieve not only the scanning range of ±70o for unidirectional beam in azimuth and ±40o in elevation but also ±50o for dual‐beam in azimuth. The whole prototype is fabricated based on PCB technologies, and good agreements among simulated and measured results are obtained. The proposed electrically tunable metasurface array is a good alternative to the traditional expensive phased array and has a great potential application prospect in radar and communication systems. Abstract:In this paper, we present the application of a resonant electric based metamaterial element and its two-dimensional metasurface implementation for a variety of emerging wireless applications. Metasurface apertures developed in this work are synthesized using sub-wavelength sampled resonant electric-based unit-cell structures and can achieve electromagnetic wave manipulation at microwave frequencies. The presented surfaces are implemented in a variety of forms, from absorption surfaces for energy harvesting and wireless power transfer to wave-chaotic surfaces for compressive sensing based single-pixel direction of arrival estimation and reflecting surfaces. It is shown that the resonant electric-synthesized metasurface concept offers a significant potential for these applications with high fidelity absorption, transmission and reflection characteristics within the microwave frequency spectrum.

High efficiency and ultra-wideband polarization converter based on an L-shaped metasurface

Abstract:An ultra-wideband and efficient single layer polarization converting metasurface based on an L-shaped resonator is presented. The metasurface is based on an F4B dielectric substrate with relative permittivity of 2.65 and a loss tangent of 0.002. The size of the unit cell is 0.132λo × 0.132λo and the thickness of the metasurface is 0.05λo, where λo is the largest wavelength (corresponding to the lower frequency) in the operation band of interest. The proposed structure effectively transforms the linearly or circularly polarized incident wave to its orthogonal equivalent, which is justified by both simulated and measured results where the polarization conversion ratio (PCR) is greater than 90% in the frequency range from 8.6 GHz to 22 GHz with a fractional bandwidth of 88%. The polarization transformation process is illustrated in depth by the surface current distribution. Simulation results reveal that ultra-wideband is achieved because of strong electric and magnetic dipole resonances on the upper and the lower layer of the metasurface. Furthermore, the bandwidth and central frequency can be efficiently adjusted over a wide spectrum by changing the geometric aspects of the unit cell, thereby retaining high transformation proficiency. The designed converter can be used in applications such as antenna design, radar invisibility, imaging, microwave communications, and remote sensing.

Abstract:A novel low-profile wideband dual-circularly polarized metasurface antenna based on a traveling-wave sequential feeding mechanism is proposed. It consists of 4 × 4 rectangle metasurface cells and is excited by a simple two-port traveling-wave feeding network, which includes four rotated Z-shaped slots etched on the ground and a ring feeding line, to provide stable sequential phases of 0°, 90°, 180°, 270° for realizing dual-circular polarizations. By changing the width of four Z-shaped slots, the equal amplitude of two orthogonal electric fields can be achieved and good right- and left-handed circular polarization (RHCP, LHCP) can be realized accordingly in a wideband. Moreover, a metasurface is utilized as a radiator to improve the impedance bandwidth (IMBW) as well as radiation performance. For demonstration, one prototype with an overall size of 0.88λ0 × 0.88λ0 × 0.06λ0 centered at 5.3 GHz is fabricated and measured. The measured results show that the proposed low-profile antenna realizes a large 10-dB IMBW of 38.4% (4.33–6.39 GHz) and 46.6% (6.17–6.70 GHz), 3-dB axial-ratio bandwidth of 38.4% and 39.3%, respectively, for RHCP and LHCP states. In addition, the polarization isolation is over 12 dB in the entire band of interest.

Abstract:In this paper, the design and experimental validation of a novel miniaturized dual-band dual-circularly polarized (CP) metasurface (MS) antenna is reported. The proposed antenna is enabled by an engineered MS-based artificial ground that supports simultaneous dual-band functionality and dual-CP unidirectional radiation. The artificial ground is a highly truncated dual-layer MS containing an array of <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$2 \times 2$ </tex-math></inline-formula> unit cells. Each unit cell is comprised by a patch and a complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) printed on the top and bottom surfaces of the substrate, respectively. A printed feeding monopole antenna is integrated with the MS to form a low-profile dual-band dual-CP antenna with a thickness of <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$0.04{\lambda }_{0}$ </tex-math></inline-formula>, where <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">${\lambda }_{0}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> is the free-space wavelength at the first operational band. A dispersion analysis of the unit cell is carried out both analytically and numerically to illustrate the working principle of the proposed antenna. This reveals that the bianisotropic response and the orientation of the CSRRs jointly provide distinct dispersion behavior along two orthogonal directions of the dual-layer MS, enabling the desired dual-band dual-CP radiation. Moreover, the CSRRs also facilitate antenna miniaturization, yielding an overall footprint of only <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$0.33 \lambda _{0}\times 0.33\lambda _{0}$ </tex-math></inline-formula>. In order to verify the antenna design, a prototype is fabricated and tested, and strong agreement between simulated and measured results is observed, experimentally achieving a 50 MHz bandwidth, and a peak gain of 3.95 and 5.29 dBi at the two targeted bands with opposite handedness for the radiated waves.

Abstract:A parallel-plate Luneburg lens (LL) based on all-metal metamaterial is presented in this article. To achieve the required refractive index distribution of the LL, an all-metal unit cell with a separated cuboid is proposed, whose height is related to its refractive index. This inserted cuboid is attached to neither the top plate nor the bottom plate of the parallel plate. Compared with traditional bed of nail design, the proposed metamaterial unit cell exhibits a wider bandwidth. The operation principle of such a unit cell is investigated using the transverse resonance technique. To construct the all-metal metamaterial LL into one body, a cruciform cuboid is added to each unit cell, such that adjacent unit cells can connect to each other. Based on the designed metamaterial LL, a multibeam antenna is developed by providing seven inputs, which can generate seven predefined beams. Several parts of the prototype are separately fabricated and assembled, and good agreement is observed between simulation and measurement. The designed LL-based multibeam antenna has several advantages, including wide bandwidth, high aperture efficiency, and high radiation efficiency.

Abstract:This paper presents an end-to-end design method for the synthesis of dielectric metasurfaces with modulated thickness that are able to realize desired radiation patterns in the far field with high precision. The method relies on integral equations and the method of moments to calculate the induced surface and volumetric current densities throughout the metasurface upon a given incident illumination. By avoiding homogenization of the dielectric layer and calculating directly the scattered fields through the method of moments, the near-field and far-field response of the metasurface can be accurately predicted and optimized. In particular, a design example of a modulated dielectric metasurface, fed by a single embedded line source, is presented for the realization of a Chebyshev array pattern with −20 - dB sidelobe level. Moreover, an externally fed dielectric metasurface performing beam splitting of a normally incident plane wave is designed, three-dimensionally printed and measured, showing two reflected beams at ±30∘ , high suppression of specular reflections ( >14dB ), and satisfactory agreement with the simulated and desired radiation patterns. The proposed design method for beamforming with dielectric metasurfaces can find application in higher frequencies where the use of copper may be problematic due to higher Ohmic losses and fabrication challenges. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.19.044033 © 2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:This paper presents an innovative beam-scanning leaky-wave antenna (LWA), which enables scanning over a wide-angle from - 35° to + 345° between 57 and 62 GHz, with broadside radiation centred at 60 GHz The proposed LWA design is based on a metasurface thin compact unit cell The LWA structure consists of a typical coaxially fed patch antenna merged, for the first time, with a metasurface absorber acting as an artificial ground A ray optic methodology for the unit-cell design of the metasurface is proposed followed by structure analysis, which makes it possible to transform a unit cell with highly reflective characteristics to a perfect absorber for normal incident waves The three-layer antenna structure includes a matrix of 4x4 square slots that is printed on top of the dielectric substrate and printed on the bottom ground plane The X-shaped slots enhance the impedance bandwidth and radiation properties of the antenna The proposed antenna structure exhibits metamaterial property with a Gain (43-10 dBi) and radiation efficiency variation of 554-842% with an overall height of 253mm.
