Abstract:This research has demonstrated that the more hydrophobic the oil (e.g., the higher its molecular weight), the more hydrophobic the surfactant system must be to achieve desirable phase behavior. The oil hydrophobicity can be characterized by its equivalent alkane carbon number (EACN). A new approach is presented for estimating the EACN of multi-component hydrophobic nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs), which can be used to help guide surfactant selection. Results demonstrate that achieving middle phase microemulsions is more complicated for high EACN oils (e.g. hexadecane with an EACN of 16). An Aerosol-OT (AOT)/ Tween 80 system was identified in batch studies and evaluated in column studies. In less than five injected pore volumes, this surfactant system removed greater than 99% of residual hexadecane from a vertical glass bead column by both mobilization and supersolubilization mechanisms. Counter-flow liquid-liquid extraction conducted in porous hollow fiber membranes was shown to effectively separate hydrophobic oils from surfactant solutions, thereby regenerating the surfactant for reuse. This research thus demonstrates that surfactant enhanced remediation of hydrophobic oils is a viable technology, worthy of further development.
Capillary Flow of Oil in a Single Foam Microchannel

Abstract:When using appropriate surfactants, oil and aqueous foam can be intimately mixed without the foam being destroyed. In this Letter, we show that a foam, initially free of oil, can draw an oil drop under the action of capillary forces and stretch it through the aqueous network. We focus on the suction of oil by a single horizontal foam channel, known as a Plateau border. In such confined channels, imbibition dynamics are governed by a balance between capillarity and viscosity. Yet, the scaling law for our system differs from that of classical imbibition in porous media such as aqueous foam. This is due to the particular geometry of the liquid channels: Plateau borders filled with foaming solution are always concave whereas they can be convex or flat when filled with oil. Finally, the oil slug, confined in the Plateau border, fragments into droplets following a film breakup.

Stable oil-laden foams: Formation and evolution

Abstract:The interaction between oil and foam has been the subject of various studies. Indeed, oil can be an efficient defoaming agent, which can be highly valuable in various industrial applications where undesired foaming may occur, as seen in jet-dyeing processes or waste water treatment plant. However, oil and foam can also constructively interact as observed in detergency, fire-fighting, food and petroleum industries, where oil can be in the foam structure or put into contact with the foam without observing a catastrophic break-up of the foam. Under specific physico-chemistry conditions, the oil phase can even be trapped inside the aqueous network of the foam, thus providing interesting complex materials made of three different fluid phases that we name oil-laden foam (OLF). In this review, we focus on such systems, with a special emphasis on dry OLF, i.e. with a total liquid volume fraction, $\varepsilon$ smaller than 5%. We first try to clarify the physical and chemical conditions for these systems to appear, we review the different techniques of the literature to obtain them. Then we discuss their structure and identify two different OLF morphologies, named foamed emulsion, in which small oil globules are comprised within the network of the aqueous foam and biliquid foams, where the oil also comprised in the aqueous foam network is continuous at the scale of several bubbles. Last, we review the state of the art of their evolution in particular concerning topological changes, coalescence, coarsening and drainage.
Surfactant-free oil-in-water nanoemulsions with nanopore membrane and ultrasound

Abstract:Hypothesis Phase separation of heterogeneous liquids can occur in the presence of sufficient shear force between a solid interface and a liquid. We hypothesize that a continuous flow of oil through nanopores into water in combination with a given ultrasound energy can generate stable free standing oil emulsions in water in the absence of surfactants. Experiment An oil solution was pumped through a membrane with 100 nm pores at a controlled flow rate and introduced into an aqueous solution while being subjected to sonication. The resulting emulsion samples were collected at specific time intervals and characterized by dynamic light scattering and nanoparticle tracking analysis techniques. We evaluated the storage stability of the emulsions with and without surfactant at room temperature or 4 °C storage. Results Introducing oil into an aqueous phase using our Nanopore system in conjunction with ultrasound gave rise to surfactant-free milky oil nanodroplet solutions. Dynamic light scattering and nanoparticle tracking analysis showed that the produced surfactant-free oil nanodroplets were monodispersed in water at sizes less than 200 nm. Control experiments without the use of nanopores did not result in phase mixing. Nanoemulsions were also generated in a surfactant containing solution resulting in a similar size range of nanodroplets. This work demonstrates that our Nanopore system can generate stable nanoemulsions in the absence of a surfactant, persisting in phase separation for several days up to two weeks at room temperature and 4 °C storage. This work suggests that nanopores are effective in producing surfactant-free nanoemulsions, which offer a wide range of valuable applications varying from drug delivery and food engineering, to paints and pesticide development.

Abstract:The need to extract oil from wells where it is embedded on the surfaces of rocks has led to the development of new and improved enhanced oil recovery techniques. One of those is the injection of surfactants with water vapor, which promotes desorption of oil that can then be extracted using pumps, as the surfactants encapsulate the oil in foams. However, the mechanisms that lead to the optimal desorption of oil and the best type of surfactants to carry out desorption are not well known yet, which warrants the need to carry out basic research on this topic. In this work, we report non equilibrium dissipative particle dynamics simulations of model surfactants and oil molecules adsorbed on surfaces, with the purpose of studying the efficiency of the surfactants to desorb hydrocarbon chains, that are found adsorbed over flat surfaces. The model surfactants studied correspond to nonionic and cationic surfactants, and the hydrocarbon desorption is studied as a function of surfactant concentration under increasing Poiseuille flow. We obtain various hydrocarbon desorption isotherms for every model of surfactant proposed, under flow. Nonionic surfactants are found to be the most effective to desorb oil and the mechanisms that lead to this phenomenon are presented and discussed.

Insights into Molecular Dynamics and Oil Extraction Behavior of the Polymeric Surfactant in a Multilayered Heterogeneous Reservoir

Abstract:Interlayer heterogeneity, an inevitable and complex challenge during water flooding, seriously constrains the spread of the sweep region and oil recovery enhancement in multilayered heterogeneous reservoirs. To overcome this challenge, a novel polymeric surfactant, having an excellent performance in the reduction of interfacial tension (IFT) and the increase of viscosity of displacing fluid, is applied for enlarging the sweep resonance and increasing the oil washing efficiency. Through the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, the molecular distributing mechanisms of the polymeric surfactant at the oil-water interface are analyzed to provide the theoretical basis for explaining the microscopic mechanism of oil extraction. To directly reflect the microscopic behavior of oil extraction, multiple transparent sand-packed models are designed to investigate the flowing behavior of different fluids and the extracted mechanisms of the remaining oil in both pore and macroscales. The multilayered heterogeneous reservoirs consisting of high-, moderate-, and low-permeability layers are fabricated to represent a heterogeneous characteristic. The recognition from the visual experiment and MD simulation can study the performance control, the extracting performance of the remaining oil, and the expression of the displacing front from different perspectives. The results from MD simulation demonstrate that the polymeric surfactant can promote the disintegration of the remaining oil and enhance its mobility. The experimental results indicate that the sweep efficiency is restricted by viscous fingering and tongue advance. Through the analysis of mathematical models, the rising mobility ratio and the location of the displacing front have a strong positive relationship with viscous fingering and tongue advance, which can reasonably explain the plugging performance of the polymeric surfactant, greatly improving the sweeping effect of the whole reservoir. Moreover, the Marangoni effect generated by the IFT gradient can induce the transformation of interfacial energy to displacement kinetic energy by the emulsification of the oil-water interface so that the remaining oil in the blind-end pore can be effectively extracted. However, by comparing data from image quantification techniques and production dynamic performance, the sweep efficiency (484%) was significantly greater than that of oil recovery (300%), demonstrating that the expanded sweep effect still plays a dominant role in the extraction of remaining oil after polymeric surfactant flooding. This study provides a novel plugging and effective washing agent that is expected to be an excellent and comprehensive method for solving the problem of low oil recovery in multilayered heterogeneous reservoirs.
Dynamic Contact Angle Reformulates Pore-Scale Fluid-Fluid Displacement at Ultralow Interfacial Tension

Abstract:Summary Surfactant flooding is an effective enhanced oil recovery method in which the oil/water interfacial tension (IFT) is reduced to ultralow values (<0.01 mN/m). The microscopic fluid-fluid displacement has been extensively studied at high IFT (>10 mN/m). However, the microscopic displacement dynamics can be significantly different when the IFT is ultralow because the dynamic contact angle increases with the increase of the capillary number. In this study, surfactant flooding was performed and visualized in micromodels to investigate the dynamics of multiphase displacement at ultralow IFT. Although the micromodels used were strongly water-wet, the displacements of oil by surfactant solutions at ultralow IFT appeared as drainage. Furthermore, a macroscopic oil film was left behind on the surface, which indicates that a contact line instability occurred during displacements. The shape of the oil/water meniscus was determined by the balance between viscous forces and capillary forces. The meniscus can be significantly distorted by viscous forces at ultralow IFT. Therefore, the water-wet micromodel exhibits an oil-wet behavior at ultralow IFT, and the displacements of oil by surfactant solutions at ultralow IFT manifested as drainage rather than imbibition. The flow behavior is further complicated by the spontaneous formation of microemulsion during displacement. The microemulsion is mainly formed from the residual oil. The formation of a microemulsion bank made the surfactant solution discontinuous, with transport in the form of droplets in the microemulsion bank and displacement front. The novelty of this work is to reveal the effects of dynamic contact angle on the ultralow IFT displacement.

Abstract:Surfactant injection is a promising method for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) due to its effective micro‐displacement mechanisms. However, understanding the interaction of a surfactant solution with heavy oil in porous media is neither straightforward nor well understood, particularly in heterogeneous systems. By enabling in‐situ real‐time monitoring of flow transport, microfluidic studies have provided novel insights into the underlying multiphase physics of flow at the pore scale. This paper examines the two‐phase displacement efficiency of a new surfactant in layered–fractured porous microfluidic patterns, a topic seldom discussed in the literature. To evaluate the performance of the proposed surfactant, we considered several heterogeneous media with varying layer and fracture geometrical characteristics, quantifying displacement efficiency for each case. Based on the analysis of pore‐scale snapshots, it was inferred that the primary mechanisms responsible for EOR during surfactant flooding into heavy oil include pore wall transportation, emulsifications, the deformation of residual oil, inter‐pore or intra‐pore bridging, and wettability alteration. Macroscopic displacement experiments revealed that the width of the swept area from surfactant injection significantly exceeded that of water injection, resulting in a substantially higher oil recovery. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the direction of fluid flow in relation to fracture orientation plays a critical role in the dynamics of surfactant solution movement and, consequently, the ultimate oil production.

Abstract:Separating petroleum hydrocarbons from water is an important problem to address in order to mitigate the disastrous effects of hydrocarbons on aquatic ecosystems. A rational approach to address the problem of marine oil water separation is to disperse the oil with the aid of surfactants in order to minimize the formation of large slicks at the water surface and to maximize the oil-water interfacial area. Here we investigate the fundamental wetting and transport behavior of such surfactant-stabilized droplets and the flow conditions necessary to perform sieving and separation of these stabilized emulsions. We show that, for water soluble surfactants, such droplets are completely repelled by a range of materials (intrinsically underwater superoleophobic) due to the detergency effect; therefore, there is no need for surface micro/nanotexturing or chemical treatment to repel the oil and prevent fouling of the filter. We then simulate and experimentally investigate the effect of emulsion flow rate on the transport and impact behavior of such droplets on rigid meshes to identify the minimum pore opening (w) necessary to filter a droplet with a given diameter (d) in order to minimize the pressure drop across the mesh and therefore maximize the filtering efficiency, which is strongly dependent on w. We define a range of flow conditions and droplet sizes where minimum droplet deformation is to be expected and therefore find that the condition of is sufficient for efficient separation. With this new understanding, we demonstrate the use of a commercially available filter--without any additional surface engineering or functionalization--to separate oil droplets from a surfactant stabilized emulsion with a flux of 11,000 L m$^{-2}$ hr$^{-1}$ bar$^{-1}$. We believe these findings can inform the design of future oil separation materials.

Abstract:This fluid dynamics video shows how an oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by an ionic surfactant spreads on the free surface of a layer of pure water. The spreading shows two intriguing features: a transparent area surrounding the source of oil droplets, and a fast retraction of the layer of oil droplets on itself once the source has emptied. We show that the dynamics of spreading are strongly connected to the interfacial/bulk properties of the surfactant.
Interfacial engineering of clear emulsions: Surfactant hydrophobicity and the hidden role of chain structure

Abstract:The large surface area requires using high concentration of surfactants to produce emulsions with small droplets, which poses challenges for industries with respect to safety issues and the potential to introduce unpleasant flavors. In this work, we investigated the factors of interfacial engineering to improve oil loading capacity and reduce surfactant concentration in emulsions while still keeping high optical clarity. The interface was systematically modulated using a fixed concentration (0.05 w/w %) of sorbitan-based surfactants with different hydrophobicity, chain length, and linearity. Particle size and turbidity were evaluated using dynamic light scattering and spectrophotometry. Hydrophilic surfactants were found to produce small droplets when the oil fraction was limited but were less effective for creating a higher oil fraction load. However, blending in hydrophobic surfactants produced smaller uniform droplets, lower turbidities and higher loading capacity owing to the change in the optimum curvature. The results revealed that surfactant-to-oil ratios (SORs) played an important role in emulsion formation at different hydrophobic-lipophobic balance (HLB). In addition, with identical HLB values, surfactants with shorter chains exhibited higher loading capacity than those with longer chains. Further, surfactants with similar backbone linearity were observed to favor emulsifying oils that have similar degrees of saturation. We found that emulsification is influenced by factors beyond hydrophobicity, such as surfactant chain length and linearity, which have been usually overlooked. From the view of interfacial curvature, we report evidence that interfacial engineering can be used to achieve more efficient emulsification, which helps to reduce surfactant content from beverages. This study provides a framework for tailored emulsion systems that bridges the current gaps in knowledge regarding factors hidden behind HLB, including SORs and chain structures. This work has potential application in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract:The surfactant solution is crucial in facilitating the spontaneous imbibition process for the recovery of oil in tight reservoirs. Further investigation is required to examine the fluid flow in porous mediums and the process of crude oil stripping by a surfactant solution during spontaneous imbibition. Hence, this study aims to determine the free motion properties of oil and water in porous mediums using the finite-element approach to solve the multiphase flow differential equation, taking into account the capillary pressure. An investigation was conducted to examine the impact of oil viscosity and interfacial tension on the mean liquid flow rate and oil volume fraction. An experimental study was conducted to investigate the impact of surface tension, interfacial tension, and wetting angle on crude-oil-stripping efficiency. The findings indicate that the stripped crude oil migrated through porous mediums as individual oil droplets, exhibiting a degree of stochasticity in its motion. When the interfacial tension is reduced, the average velocity of the fluid in the system decreases. The crude oil exhibited a low viscosity, high flow capacity, and a high average flow rate within the system. Once the concentration of the surfactant solution surpasses a specific threshold, it binds with the oil to create colloidal aggregates, resulting in the formation of micelles and influencing the efficiency of the stripping process. As the temperature rises, the oil-stripping efficiency also increases. Simultaneously, an optimal range of wetting angle, surface tension, and interfacial tension could enhance the effectiveness of removing oil using surfactant solutions. The research results of this paper enrich the enhanced oil recovery mechanism of surfactant and are of great significance to the development of tight reservoirs.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Hypothesis</h3><p>Displacement of oil droplets receding from solid surfaces in aqueous solutions plays a critical role in many household activities and industrial operations. Surfactants are often involved in these activities to control the displacement process. We hypothesize that the influence of surfactants on the displacement process of oil is highly dependent on the type and dosage of surfactants, with the mechanisms being elucidated by the analysis using appropriate dynamic wetting models.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Experiments</h3><p>We systematically investigated the spontaneous displacement of a high viscosity oil on curved hydrophilic glass surfaces in aqueous solutions of anionic sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, cationic hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, and nonionic Triton<sup>TM</sup> X-100 over a wide range of concentrations.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Findings</h3><p>The rather different oil displacement behaviors were observed with different surfactant additions. The displacement dynamics of the receding oil droplet was found to be inhibited by surfactant additions and followed two distinct models quantitatively: the power-law model describing the temporal evolution of early-stage displacement, and the molecular kinetic model describing the dependence of the three-phase contact line displacement velocity on the dynamic contact angle at the late stage of oil displacement. The model-based data analysis provided insights on the role of surfactants in controlling the oil displacement dynamics.</p>

Lubricant-Infused Surfaces for Low-Surface-Tension Fluids: The Extent of Lubricant Miscibility

Abstract:Lubricant-infused surfaces (LISs) and slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have shown remarkable success in repelling low-surface-tension fluids. The atomically smooth, defect-free slippery surface leads to reduced droplet pinning and omniphobicity. However, the presence of a lubricant introduces liquid–liquid interactions with the working fluid. The commonly utilized lubricants for LISs and SLIPSs, although immiscible with water, show various degrees of miscibility with organic polar and nonpolar working fluids. Here, we rigorously investigate the extent of miscibility by considering a wide range of liquid–vapor surface tensions (12–73 mN/m) and different categories of lubricants having a range of viscosities (5–2700 cSt). Using high-fidelity analytical chemistry techniques including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analysis, and two-dimensional gas chromatography, we quantify lubricant miscibility to parts per billion accuracy. Furthermore, we quantify lubricant concentrations in the collected condensate obtained from prolonged condensation experiments with ethanol and hexane to delineate mixing and shear-based lubricant drainage mechanisms and to predict the lifetime of LISs and SLIPSs. Our work not only elucidates the effect of lubricant properties on miscibility with various fluids but also develops guidelines for developing stable and robust LISs and SLIPSs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Insights Into The Oil Adsorption And Cyclodextrin Extraction Process On Rough Silica Surface By Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulation was performed to investigate the adsorption and aqueous extraction of oil contaminants on silica surface with various roughness. The oil dispersion and immersion were characterized by molecular configuration, adsorption energy, and contact angle, while the oil detachment in water and cyclodextrin solution was evaluated by the overall extractability, extractability from the individual groove, and free energy analysis. Results demonstrated that the main resistance for oil release from the relatively shallow grooves was the strong intermolecular interactions among the oil molecules orderly stacked inside the grooves. It highlighted the role of cyclodextrin in-breaking through the energy barrier for pulling out one oil molecule from the tightly stacked oil structure, which resulted in the fast release of the remaining oil. Previous studies attributed the oil extraction to the sequestration of oil into the hydrophobic cavity of cyclodextrin, while our results demonstrated that such an inclusion process was critical in initially destroying the stable structure of the oil compacted inside the grooves but contributed little afterward. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first molecular-level study on the cyclodextrin-aided oil detachment from a mineral surface, which improves our understanding of the oil cleanup mechanisms during aqueous extraction.

Abstract:Four cases of rapid cycling bipolar affective disorder are described; the diagnosis being made by DSM(III) criteria. All are children, aged between 11 and 12 at the onset of the illness and all are of low intelligence. The follow-up has ranged from three to five years. The clinical symptoms and their response to treatment are described and the implications of this unusual presentation are discussed.

Abstract:This article presents a versatile method for stabilizing the water‐oil interface by inducing morphological changes in surfactant aggregates using oleic acid. This approach enables liquid‐in‐liquid 3D printing of complex structures with features such as self‐healing, perfusion, and porosity. Morphological transitions as the underlying mechanism were confirmed and characterized by small‐angle X‐ray scattering, rheometry, and microscopy, along with simulations. Stabilizing liquid–liquid interfaces, whether between miscible or immiscible liquids, is crucial for a wide range of applications, including energy storage, microreactors, and biomimetic structures. In this study, a versatile approach for stabilizing the water‐oil interface is presented using the morphological transitions that occur during the self‐assembly of anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants mixed with fatty acid oils. The morphological transitions underlying this approach are characterized and extensively studied through small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), rheometry, and microscopy techniques. Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) as a simulation tool is adopted to investigate these morphological transitions both in the equilibrium ternary system as well as in the dynamic condition of the water‐oil interface. Such a versatile strategy holds promise for enhancing applications such as liquid‐in‐liquid 3D printing. Moreover, it has the potential to revolutionize a wide range of fields where stabilizing liquid–liquid interfaces not only offers unprecedented opportunities for fine‐tuning nanostructural morphologies but also imparts interesting practical features to the resulting liquid shapes. These features include perfusion capabilities, self‐healing, and porosity, which could have significant implications for various industries.

Abstract:This study examines discrepancies in oil displacement mechanisms at equivalent interfacial tensions, focusing on the distinct contributions of surfactants and nanoparticles. It was hypothesized that similar interfacial activities would result in consistent displacement outcomes, while differences would reflect unique interfacial behaviors. Micromodel experiments revealed that at high interfacial tension (~20 mN/m), surfactants outperformed nanofluids in efficiency and ultimate oil recovery by reinforcing capillary forces. Conversely, nanofluids showed limited ability to modify interfacial forces. At lower interfacial tensions (6.5 mN/m for surfactants, 15.6 mN/m for nanofluids), both systems displayed similar displacement efficiencies and fingering patterns, driven by distinct mechanisms: capillary instability for surfactants and expansive layer flow for nanofluids. These findings challenge the assumption that nanofluids rely primarily on interfacial tension reduction for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and highlight the need to refine our understanding of nanoparticle interfacial activities. Future studies should extend these insights to core-scale experiments for a more comprehensive evaluation of two-phase flow dynamics.
