Abstract:This paper describes the development of screen-printed (SPE) and carbon paste (CPE) sensors for the rapid and sensitive quantification of naphazoline hydrochloride (NPZ) in pharmaceutical formulations. This work compares the electroactivity of conventional carbon paste and screen-printed carbon paste electrodes towards potentiometric titration of NPZ. The repeatability and accuracy of measurements performed in the analysis of these pharmaceutical matrices using new screen printed sensors were evaluated. The influence of the electrode composition, conditioning time of the electrode and pH of the test solution, on the electrode performance were investigated. The drug electrode showed Nernstain responses in the concentration range from 1 × 10(-6) to 1 × 10(-2) mol L(-1) with slopes of 57.5 ± 1.3 and 55.9 ± 1.6 mV per decade for SPE and CPE, respectively, and was found to be very precise and usable within the pH range 3-8. These sensors exhibited a fast response time (about 3 s for both SPE and CPE, respectively), a low detection limit (3.5 × 10(-6) and 1.5 × 10(-6) M for SPE and CPE, respectively), a long lifetime (3 and 2 months for SPE and CPE, respectively) and good stability. The selectivity of the electrode toward a large number of inorganic cations, sugars and amino acids was tested. It was applied to potentiometric determination of NPZ in pure state and pharmaceutical preparation under batch conditions. The percentage recovery values for the assay of NPZ in tablets (relative standard deviations ≤0.3% for n = 4) were compared well with those obtained by the official method.

Abstract:In the pharmaceutical field, analytical chemistry is evolving and one area that is experiencing enthusiasm is the design and implementation of solid contact ion-selective electrodes. We have developed two potentiometric sensors for the selective assay of a widely used drug diclofenac sodium. Diclofenac sodium was targeted in one of its most recommended dosage forms (Arthrotec® tablets) in the presence of misoprostol. A cost-effective copper printed circuit board as a substrate has been coated with a PVC sensing membrane to fabricate sensor I. Hydrophobic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been modified through in situ reduction of pentafluorophenyl diazonium using sodium borohydride. An interlayer of the modified CNTs was inserted as a transducer layer between the Cu substrate and the ion-sensing membrane in sensor II to enhance its electrochemical performance and stability. The microfabricated electrodes demonstrated encouraging outcomes upon the direct assay of diclofenac sodium in combination with misoprostol and other additives without sample preparation steps. The responses presented a linear Nernstian pattern in the range of 1.0 ×10−4 to 1.0 ×10−2 mol L−1 with a slope of -58.2 and -58.4 mV/decade for sensors I and II, consequently. Finally, the sustainability of the developed technique was assured using advanced green metrics.

Abstract:A modified carbon paste sensor based on N , N ′-(((ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(2,1-phenylene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(pyridine-2-amine; BPA Schiff base as Cr(III) selective carrier was fabricated and studied in this work. The proposed sensor homogenization and mechanism of action was studied by infra-red (IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) tools. The sensor covered 1.0 × 10 −7 –1.0 × 10 –1 mol L −1 linear range and a detection limit of 7.22 × 10 –8 mol L −1 for Cr(III) with 20.17 ± 0.13 mV decade −1 Nernstian slope. 5 s was the response time of the prepared sensor and it was reproducible and stable for 3 months. The working pH range was 3.3–6.0 and it also works well to determine Cr(III) ion in presence of water miscible solvents up to 12.5% content of the methanol and 17.5% of ethanol. The electrode's selectivity was studied using separate and mixed solution methods for selectivity coefficients determination and the sensor showed good selectivity relative to a variety of metal ions (selectivity coefficients = 1.01 × 10 −5 –8.57 × 10 −3 ). In addition, the practical analysis value of the sensor was demonstrated by measurement of Cr(III) quantitatively in mineral water, supplement and also as an indicator electrode in Cr(III) against EDTA potentiometric titration with good reproducibility (RSDs of 0.91–2.15%).

Abstract:Antazoline (ANT) is a H1 histamine receptor antagonist having anticholinergic properties used to decrease nasal congestion. It is found in eye drops, usually in combination with either tetryzoline (TET) or xylometazoline (XLO). In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor based on carbon paste electrode (CPE) is developed for simple, rapid, sensitive, and selective determination of antazoline in drug substance, different pharmaceutical formulations and in presence of aqueous humor. CPE is modified with nanoparticles multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composite and further decorated with gold nanoparticles using amperometric electrodeposition technique to attain Au-NP@MWCNT/CPE for enhancing sensor sensitivity. Linearity is divided into two linear segments and found to be 2×10-7-2×10-6 (1st Linear segment) and 2×10-6-2×10-5 (2nd Linear segment) with limit of detection and quantification of 1.77×10-7 and 5.37×10-7, respectively. High sensitivity, selectivity, and reproducibility of the modified electrode towards determination of antazoline have promoted its applicability in different dosage forms and in rabbit aqueous humor. This method has noticeable potential applications in quality control, pharmacokinetic studies, and routine determination of antazoline drug in binary pharmaceutical formulations.

Abstract:Carbendazim (CBZ) as a fungicide is widely used to control fungal diseases in agriculture, veterinary medicine, and forestry. In this study, molecularly imprinted nano-size polymer was synthesized and then combined with multiwalled carbon nanotubes to be used as modifiers for carbon paste electrode to detect carbendazim in water, fruit, agricultural wastewater, and urine samples by using the square-wave technique. Some common ions and pesticides were investigated as interferences in analyte, to study the sensitivity and selectivity of the modified carbon paste electrode for carbendazim. The combination of molecular imprinted polymer and multiwalled carbon nanotubes showed a significant increase in peak current in electrocatalytic activity on electrochemical detection of the carbendazim. The linear range of 1 × 10 −10 to 5 × 10 −8 molL −1 was investigated. The lower detection limit was determined to be 0.2 × 10 −10 molL −1 , and the relative standard deviation for the target molecule analysis was 2.07%. The result reveals that the modified carbon paste sensor with Multi walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) and Molecular Imprinted Polymer (MIPs) can be used easily, without preparation steps that have high selectivity and sensitivity to determine carbendazim in water, fruit, agricultural wastewater, and urine samples.

Abstract:In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor was developed for the determination of diphenylhydramine hydrochloride (DPH). The electrochemical sensor was constructed using a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with ferrite–cobalt–silica nanocomposite coated with a new ionic liquid (triethyl- n -octylammonium hexafluorophosphate). In the first step, we synthesized the ferrite–cobalt–silica nanocomposites (Co–Fe 2 O 4 –SiO 2 ) characterized with different methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). In the second step, triethyl- n -octylammonium hexafluorophosphate ionic liquid (E 3 OAPF 6 ) was synthesized and characterized with different methods such as proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) and FT-IR. Ferrite–cobalt nanocomposites coated with ionic liquid were used as the carbon paste electrode modifier for voltammetry determination of DPH in the blood samples. This modified electrode offered considerable improvement in voltammetric sensitivity toward DPH, in comparison to the bare electrode. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) displayed a linear dynamic range from 10.0 to 700.0 pM and a detection limit of 1.8 pM for DPH.

Abstract:Synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) from natural resources not only enables green synthesis and production of environmentally friendly materials, but also provides a cost-effective probe as a fluorescence nanosensor. The proposed sensor introduces a unique one-pot hydrothermal CDs synthesis from alfalfa leaves, which is promising for sensing hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) via inner filter effect (IFE) and resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS). The as-prepared CDs had wide emission spectra, excitation-dependent emission, high solubility, high stability, and visible fluorescence light with a quantum yield of up to 11%. The absorption of HCTZ overlapped with the excitation spectra of CDs. Therefore, CDs represented excellent quenching due to IFE when HCTZ was gradually added. Furthermore, this fluorescent sensor was successfully used to quantify HCTZ in the linear ranges (0.17-2.50 μg mL-1) with the limit of detection of 0.11 μg mL-1. The sensing system was simple as no surface functionalization was required for CDs, leading to less laborious steps and more cost-effective synthesis. The reaction time was short, i.e., less than 2 min, indicating a simple approach for rapid analysis of HCTZ. By optimizing conditions, successful measurements were carried out on pharmaceutical tablets.

Abstract:Captopril (CP) is commonly used as an active enzyme inhibitor for the treatment of coronary heart disease, hypertension and angina pectoris. The development of sensitive and efficient method for CP analysis is of great importance in biomedical research. Herein, we fabricated a sensitive and robust hydrogel-assisted paper-based sensor based on fluorescence UiO-66-NH2@ZIF-8 and Co, N-doped carbon nanozymes with oxidase-mimicking activity for accurate monitoring of captopril. The hydrogel-assisted paper-based sensor appeared a visible pink signal due to the catalytic oxidation of colorless N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPD) to oxDPD by Co, N-doped carbon-based nanozymes, and resulted in the fluorescence quenching of UiO-66-NH2@ZIF-8. In the presence of captopril, the oxidation of chromogenic substrate DPD by Co, N-doped nanozymes in the hydrogel-assisted paper-based sensor was hindered and accompanied by a change in the visible color, leading to recovery of the fluorescence of UiO-66-NH2@ZIF-8, and the change in the fluorescence color could also be observed. Therefore, the quantitative detection of captopril is achieved by taking a smartphone photograph and converting the image parameters into data information using ImageJ software. The portable hydrogel-assisted paper sensor provided sensitive detection of captopril in two modes based on visible color change as well as fluorescence color change with limits of detection of 0.45 μM and 0.47 μM, respectively. This hydrogel-assisted paper-based sensor has been successfully applied to the accurate monitoring of captopril in human serum, providing a potential avenue for in situ detection of captopril.
Binder-free and efficient voltammetric sensor based on Zn-Ca2CuO3 nanoparticles for simultaneous determination of amlodipine, acetaminophen, and ascorbic acid in hypertension patients

Abstract:Amlodipine (AM) is a long active calcium channel blocker used to relax blood vessels by preventing calcium ion transport into the vascular walls and its supporting molecules acetaminophen (AP) and ascorbic acid (AA) are recommended for hypertension control and prevention. Considering their therapeutic importance and potential side effects due to over dosage, we have fabricated a sensor for individual and simultaneous determination of AA, AP, and AM in pharmaceuticals and human urine using novel Zn-doped Ca2CuO3 nanoparticles modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Optimally doped Ca2CuO3 (2.5 wt% Zn at Cu site) enhanced the detection of target molecules over much wider concentration ranges of 50 to 3130 µM for AA, 0.25 to 417 µM for AP, and 0.8 to 354 µM for AM with the corresponding lowest detection limits of 14 µM, 0.05 µM, and 0.07 µM, respectively. Furthermore, the Zn-Ca2CuO3/GCE exhibited excellent selectivity and high sensitivity even in the presence of several potential interfering agents. The usefulness of the developed electrode was tested using an amlodipine besylate tablet and urine samples of seven hypertension patients under medication. The results confirmed the presence of a significant amount of AP and AM in six patients' urine samples indicating that the personalized medication is essential and the quantum of medication need to be fixed by knowing the excess medicines excreted through urine. Thus, the Zn-Ca2CuO3/GCE with a high recovery percentage and good sensitivity shall be useful in the pharmaceutical and biomedical sectors.
A simple voltammetric method for rapid sensing of daunorubicin in the presence of dacarbazine by graphene oxide/metal–organic framework-235 nanocomposite-modified carbon paste electrode

Abstract:In the current work, a novel and simple electrochemical sensing platform was built utilizing a graphene oxide (GO)/metal–organic framework-235 (MOF-235) nanocomposite, which was successfully synthesized and used as an excellent modifier to determine the simultaneous presence of two key anticancer medications, daunorubicin (DNR), and dacarbazine (DTIC). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used to characterize the GO/MOF-235 nanocomposite. The electrocatalytic properties of the modified sensor based on MOF and GO in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) (0.1 M—pH 7.0) toward DNR redox reaction were thoroughly investigated using electrochemical methodologies including cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and chronoamperometry. This GO/MOF-235-modified CPE demonstrated a wide linear response of 0.005–400.0 μM under optimized conditions. It was determined that 0.002 μM was the detection limit. This sensor displayed two distinct oxidation peaks at 390 mV for DNR and at 750 mV for dacarbazine (DTIC) (peak potential separation = 360 mV), allowing for the simultaneous detection of the two anticancer medications. Determination of these anticancer medicines in samples (DNR injection and DTIC injection) was effectively accomplished in the final step using the GO/MOF-235/CPE sensor.

Abstract:An electrochemical sensor is described for the simultaneous determination of ortho-hydroxybenzoic acid (OHB) and para-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHB). The sensor consists of a carbon paste electrode modified with nickel titanate nanoceramics (NiTiO3/CPE). The NiTiO3 nanoceramics and the nanostructured modified CPE were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Differential pulse voltammetry indicates that the response to OHB (best measured at 0.90 V vs. Ag/AgCl) and PHB (measured at 0.80 V vs. Ag/AgCl) is significantly improved at the modified CPE compared to a bare CPE. The limits of detection (at S/N = 3) are 0.38 and 0.10 μM for OHB and PHB, respectively. The method was applied to the determination of the two isomers in peeling skin lotion and during the Kolbe-Schmitt reaction. Graphical abstract Nickel titanate nanoceramics (NiTiO3) were synthesized by a sol-gel method. Then, a carbon paste electrode modified with NiTiO3 (NiTiO3/CPE) was constructed. The modified electrode was applied to the interference-free and simultaneous determination of ortho-hydroxybenzoic acid (OHB) and para-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHB).

Abstract:Pharmaceuticals are generally designed to be nondegradable or slowly degradable to prevent chemical degradation as it is employed as therapeutics for human or animal. This results in a widespread risk when they enter, accumulate or persist in the environment. Pharmaceutical pollution is emerging as wide-reaching concern due to its ostensible consequences, by dissemination in the environment. This demands for inventing novel analytical routes to monitor and mitigate pharmaceutical pollutants. Therefore, this paper presents synthesis of Zinc molybdate nano particles embedded on functionalized carbon nanofibers to fabricate glassy carbon electrode towards sensitive detection of Sulfadiazine (SDZ). The synergistic effect produced in the composite had enabled it with improved charge transfer kinetics and benefited with more active surface area. The proposed ZnMoO 4 /f-CNF sensor shows significant static characteristics such as wide linear response ranges (0.125 to1575.2 μM), low detection limit (0.0006 μM) and selectivity, and increased stability. Also, its practicability was analyzed by SDZ detection in real samples.

Abstract:Herein we report the preparation of porous activated carbon from the biomass waste material, such as Borassus flabellifer (Asian palmyra palm) shell as a carbon precursor. The structural, morphological studies reveal the formation of the 3D-graphene like porous activated carbon nanosheet (3D-PAC) from the Borassus flabellifer . Interestingly, the 3D-PAC was self-doped with nitrogen, which was confirmed from the XPS analysis. The structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of 3D-PAC were analyzed using various physiochemical and electrochemical methods. Then for the first time, we probed the analytical behavior of 3D-PAC modified glassy carbon electrode (3D-PAC/GCE) to detect furazolidone (FZ, antibiotic drug). The effect of experimental parameters like modifier loading concentration/volume, pH, analyte accumulation time, scan rate, and sample concentration was studied based on FZ’s reduction peak current. The developed drug sensor exhibited excellent FZ detection performance, with a wide linear range from 0.5 to 290 μ M, a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.5 nM, and appreciable sensitivity of 5.05 μ A μ M −1 cm −2 . Further, the proposed sensor was also well performed in real sample (human urine) analysis with good recovery results.

Abstract:A metallomesogen based on an Zn(II) coordination complex was employed as precursor to obtain a complex matrix nanoplatform for the fabrication of a high-performance electrochemical hybrid sensor. Three representative paste electrodes, which differ by the weight ratio between Zn(II) metallomesogen and carbon nanotubes (CNT), i.e., PE_01, PE_02 and PE_03, were obtained by mixing the materials in different amounts. The composition with the largest amount of CNT with respect to Zn complex, i.e., PE_03, gives the best electrochemical signal for uric acid detection by cyclic voltammetry in an alkaline medium. The amphiphilic structure of the Zn(II) coordination complex likely induces a regular separation between the metal centers favoring the redox system through their reduction, followed by stripping, and is characterized by enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards uric acid oxidation. The comparative detection of uric acid between the PE_03 paste electrode and the commercial zinc electrode demonstrated the superiority of the former, and its great potential for the development of advanced electrochemical detection of uric acid. Advanced electrochemical techniques, such as differential-pulsed voltammetry (DPV) and square-wave voltammetry (SWV), allowed for the highly sensitive detection of uric acid in aqueous alkaline solutions. In addition, a good and fast amperometric signal for uric acid detection was achieved by multiple-pulsed amperometry, which was validated by urine analysis.

Abstract:Antibiotics are mainly used to treat infectious diseases caused by bacteria in human and animal bodies. Dimetridazole (DMZ) is a nitroimidazole class of antibiotic drug which is commonly used as an additive in poultry feed. The overuse of antibiotics in poultry production can transfer resistant bacteria to living organisms that cause serious side effects. Therefore, we have developed a two-dimensional (2D)/one-dimensional (1D) hybrid electrocatalyst to detect DMZ protozoan infections drug in food samples. A 2D nanoflakes-like structure of hydrogen ammonium zinc molybdate layered double hydroxides (denoted as AZnMo-LDHs), is a new class of 2D material, that was initially derived through the co-precipitation method; later, it was integrated with 1D vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) under ultrasonication method. This hybrid material is further characterized by different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Its electrocatalytic activity to DMZ was also examined by cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry methods. The AZnMo-LDHs@VGCF electrocatalyst exhibited an excellent electrochemical detection parameter such as a lower limit of detection (0.021 μM), sensitivity (1 μA μM−1 cm−2), and good linear range (0.25–570 μM) toward DMZ. It is due to the synergistic effect between the 2D nanoflakes of the LDHs and 1D VGCF conductive support. The proposed sensor further exhibited a good recovery to the determination of DMZ in real spiked samples such as egg, milk, and human urine.

Abstract:Diethylcarbamazine citrate on a carbon paste electrode (poly‐DCZ/MCPE) is being investigated as a sensing agent in the detection of sulfadiazine (SDZ) and uric acid (UA) via CV and DPV techniques. This study illustrates the electrode's capability for simultaneous determination of SDZ and UA, underscoring its aptness for dual analyte detection and highlighting its promise in both analytical and biosensing domains. The widespread use of antibiotics like sulfadiazine (SDZ) in various industries has raised environmental and health concerns due to their potential for bioaccumulation and the subsequent effects on human health and the environment. Diethylcarbamazine citrate (DCZ), a well‐established antifilarial drug, has yet to be explored as a sensing agent despite its extensive use. This study proposes a cost‐effective and efficient method for detecting SDZ and Uric acid (UA) using a DCZ‐modified carbon paste electrode (poly‐DCZ/MCPE). The poly‐DCZ film is synthesized via cyclic voltammetry (CV) on the carbon paste electrode surface, demonstrating excellent electrocatalytic activity for SDZ and UA detection at pH 7.4. The diffusion‐controlled electrode process is observed with a lower limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for SDZ as 3.8×10−9 M and 12.94×10−9 M respectively. For UA, LOD and LOQ were found to be 6.291×10−9 M and 20.97×10−9 M respectively at the poly‐DCZ/MCPE. Notably, the sensor exhibits simultaneous detection capabilities for SDZ and UA by CV and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) methods, addressing the need to monitor antibiotic residues in aquatic ecosystems and animal‐derived products.

Electrochemical Sensors for Berberine Hydrochloride Determination in Commercial Products and Bio-Fluids

Abstract:The present study describes the development of three electrochemical sensors conducted by the interaction of berberine hydrochloride (BRB) with phosphotungestic acid (plastic membrane), sodium tetraphenyl borate (coated wire), and ammonium reineckate (coated graphite) sensors. Under optimum experimental conditions the effect of membrane content, type of solvent mediator, soaking time, hydrogen ion concentration of the test solutions and the estimation of the analyte in the presence of foreign species were studied. The data confirmed that the developed sensors gave potential responses of 54.10 ± 0.5, 57.00 ± 0.5 and 59.00 ± 0.5 mV decade-1 at ambient temperature for (berberine–phosphotungstate, BRB-PT), (berberine–tetraphenylborate, BRB-TPB) and (berberine–reineckate, BRB-AR) sensors, respectively, over drug concentration ranges of 1.0×10-7 - 1.0×10-3, 1.0×10-8 - 1.0×10-2 and 1.0×10-7 - 1.0×10-2 mol L-1 with lower detection limits 5.0×10-8, 5.0×10-9 and 5.0×10-8 mol L-1 for the above suggested sensors, respectively. The suggested sensors provide high selectivity, precise and sensitivity for the determination of BRB within the average pH range 3-9. Validity of the method was performed for the suggested electrochemical probe following ICH guidelines. The suggested sensors were favorably exploited for the estimation of BRB in commercial products and bio-fluids.
