Abstract:The type-II clathrates of Cs8Na16Ga6Ge130, Cs8Na16Si22.0(3)Ge114.0(3) and Rb8Na16Si13.7(4)Ge122.3(4) have been synthesized from elements. The structures were refined from the powder X-ray diffraction data using the WinCSD program. Cs8Na16Ga6Ge130, Cs8Na16Si22.0(3)Ge114.0(3) and Rb8Na16Si13.7(4)Ge122.3(4) crystallized in the space group Fd3m with the lattice parameters of a = 15.48499 (3) angstrom, 15.44642(6) angstrom and 15.47489(5) angstrom, respectively. The theoretical calculation indicates the metallic features for Cs8Na16Ga6Ge130, Cs8Na16Si22.0(3)Ge114.0(3) and Rb8Na16Si13.7(4)Ge122.3(4. The heat capacity measurement shows a large electron contribution and a strong Einstein mode in Cs8Na16Ga6Ge130. The magnetic measurement evidences a diamagnetic behaviour for Cs8Na16Si22.0(3)Ge114.0(3) in the temperature range of 1.8-300 K.

Abstract:Periodic density functional calculations using pseudopotentials and a local basis set were performed on the type I clathrates A(8)Ga(16)Ge(30) (A=Sr, Ba). Both are known to show promising thermoelectric properties. Ab initio wave functions were analyzed within the framework of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules. This enabled us to analyze both the charge transfer and bonding properties of the clathrate from a rigorous quantum mechanical viewpoint. The Ba and Sr centers were found to be largely ionic (charge: ca. +1.7 e) both in the smaller 20-atom and in the larger 24-atom cages, consistent with a Zintl-phase view of these type I clathrates. The assertion that the Sr atoms in the different cages have similar oxidation states is shown to be consistent with multiwavelength diffraction experiments on Sr(8)Ga(16)Ge(30); while the assertion of ionicity of the Sr center is supported by the observation that the adsorption edge lies close to that previously found in the Sr K-edge XANES spectra of Sr(OH)(2).8 H(2)O. As such, this work contradicts previous experimental and theoretical studies that claim that the guest atoms are neutral. We show that the discrepancy is related to the definitions used for electron transfer. Definitions based on electron displacement (rearrangement) in space, as in previous works, do not account for the variation in shape and volume of the atomic catchment regions upon change in the number and average locations of the particles in the system. Eventually, such definitions lead to underestimation of charge transfer. The large binding energy found in earlier work for Ba and Sr in these materials is found to be consistent with a simple picture of charge transfer from the guest to the frame. Preliminary investigations on a clathrate of perfect stoichiometry appear to rule out any important relationship between the observed increase in the thermoelectric figure of merit with increasing external pressure and host-guest charge transfer.

Abstract:The structural parameters, thermal properties, and transport properties of three type I clathrates, namely Sr8Zn8Ge38, Sr8Ga16Ge30, and Ba8Ga16Si30, have been determined at or below room temperature. The structural parameters of these clathrates were determined by powder neutron diffraction. Their lattice thermal expansion is two to four times greater than that of the diamond phases of silicon and germanium, consistent with more anharmonic lattice vibrations. From the temperature dependence of the isotropic atomic displacement parameters, the estimated rattling frequencies of guests in the large cages of these clathrates are in the range 50-60 cm(-1). The heat capacities of these three clathrate materials increase smoothly with increasing temperatures and approach the Dulong-Petit value around room temperature. The Gruneisen parameter of these materials is constant between 100 and 300 K but increases below 100 K, due to the dominance of the low-frequency guest-rattling modes. The room-temperature electrical resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient show that these materials are metallic. The temperature profile of the thermal conductivities and calculated phonon mean free paths of these materials show glasslike behavior, although they are crystalline materials, indicating strong resonant scattering of heat-carrying acoustic phonons via the rattling of the guests in the clathrate cages.
Structure and stability of Ba-Cu-Ge type-I clathrates

Abstract:We have prepared samples of nominal type Ba(8)Cu(x)Ge(46-x) by induction melting and solid state reaction. Analysis shows that these materials form type-I clathrates, with copper content between x = 4.9 and 5.3, nearly independent of the starting composition. We used x-ray powder diffraction and single-crystal electron diffraction to confirm the cubic type-I clathrate structure, while electron microprobe measurements confirmed the stability of the x = 5 composition. This result differs from the corresponding Ag and Au clathrates, and was not known previously due perhaps to the similar Cu and Ge form factors in x-ray diffraction. The observed composition adheres very tightly to a valence-counting scheme, in agreement with a Zintl-type stability mechanism. This implies a gap in the electronic density of states, also in contrast to the metallic behavior of the Au and Ag analogs. Magnetization measurements showed a large diamagnetic response in the Ba-Cu-Ge clathrate. This behavior is consistent with semiconducting or semimetallic behavior, and is similar to that of a number of intermetallic semiconductors.

Computational Investigation of the Structural, Elastic, Electronic, and Thermodynamic Properties of Chloroperovskites GaXCl3 (X = Be, Ca, or Sr) Using DFT Framework

Abstract:In this study, we employed the pseudopotential plane wave approach to examine the influence of the X atom (X = Be, Ca, or Sr) on the physical properties of isostructural chloroperovskites GaXCl3. The GGA-PBEsol and LDA functionals were employed to simulate the exchange-correlation interactions. The computed equilibrium lattice parameters exhibit a high level of concordance with the existing theoretical findings. The cohesion energy and enthalpy of formation were computed to verify the energetic stability of the materials under consideration. The determined values of the single-crystal elastic constants (Cij) indicate that GaBeCl3 remains mechanically stable up to a hydrostatic pressure of 18 GPa. Similarly, GaCaCl3 preserves its stability up to 5 GPa, while GaSrCl3 remains mechanically stable up to 1.25 GPa. The projected Cij values were used to estimate several elastic moduli and related properties, including the shear and bulk moduli, sound wave speeds, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and Debye temperature. The quasiharmonic Debye approach was employed to examine various thermal parameters, including the temperature dependence of the unit cell volume, bulk modulus, expansion coefficient, Debye temperature, isochoric and isobar heat capacities, Grüneisen parameter, and entropy function. It has been shown that GaBeCl3 demonstrates a lower thermal expansion coefficient and a higher Debye temperature in comparison to GaCaCl3 and GaSrCl3.

Nanostructuring of Ba8Ga16Ge30 clathrates

Abstract:First thermoelectric properties measurements on bulk nanostructured Ba8Ga16Ge30 clathrate-I are presented. A sol-gel-calcination route was developed for preparing amorphous nanosized precursor oxides. The further reduction of the oxides led to quantitative yield of crystalline nanosized Ba8Ga16Ge30 clathrate-I. TEM investigations show the clathrate nanoparticles retain the size and morphology of the precursor oxides. The clathrate nanoparticles contain mainly thin plates (approx. 300 nm x 300 nm x 50 nm) and a small amount of nanospheres (diameter ~ 10 nm). SAED patterns confirm the clathrate-I structure type for both morphologies. The powders were compacted via Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) to obtain a bulk nano-structured material. The Seebeck coefficient S, measured on low-density samples (53% of {\delta}x-ray), reaches -145 {\mu}V/k at 375 °C. The ZT values are quite low (0.02) due to the high resistivity of the sample (two orders of magnitude larger than bulk materials) and the low sample density. The trend of the temperature dependence of S is in agreement with the values obtained from electronic structure calculations and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory within the constant scattering approximation. The total thermal conductivity (1.61 W/mK), measured on high density samples (93% of {\delta}x-ray), shows a reduction of 20-25% in relation to the bulk materials (2.1 W/mK). A further shaping of the sample for the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity measurements was not possible due to the presence of cracks. An improvement on the design of the pressing tools, loading of the sample and profile of the applied pressure will enhance the mechanical stability of the samples. These investigations are now in progress.

Abstract:Semiconducting clathrates have attracted considerable interest in the field of thermoelectric materials. We report here a computational study on the crystal structure, the enthalpy of formation, and the physical properties of the following type-I clathrates: (a) experimentally studied Cs8Sn44 and hypothetical Cs8Sn46 and (b) hypothetical (NH4)8Sn46−x (x = 0 or 2). The ab initio VASP calculations for the nominal stoichiometries include the geometry optimization of the initial structural models, enthalpies of formation, and the electronic and phonon density of states. Comparison of the chemical bonding of the structural models is performed via the electron localization function. The results show that the presence and distribution of defects in the Sn framework for both Cs8Sn46−x and (NH4)8Sn46−x systems significantly alters the formation energy and its electrical properties, ranging from metallic to semiconducting behavior. In particular, one defect per six-membered Sn ring in a 3D spiro-network is the thermodynamically preferred configuration that results in the Cs8Sn44 and (NH4)8Sn44 stoichiometries with narrow-band gap semiconducting behavior. Moreover, the rotation of the ammonium cation in the polyhedral cavities is an interesting feature that may promote the use of ammonium or other small molecular cations as guests in clathrates for thermoelectric applications; this is due to the decrease in the lattice thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Tl-doped type-II clathrate Cs8Na16-xTlxGe136 was synthesized from its elements. The structure was characterised by single crystal and powder diffraction. Cs8Na16-xTlxGe136 crystallized in the space group Fd (3) over barm. The melting point decreased with increasing Tl content at 925.0 degrees C, 922.8 degrees C and 915.7 degrees C for Cs8Na14.76(3)Tl1.24(2)Ge136, Cs8Na9.94(2)Tl6.06(2)Ge136 and Cs8Na8.36(2)Tl7.64(2)Ge136 in Ar atmosphere, respectively. Cs8Na9.94(2)Tl6.06(2)Ge136 exhibited diamagnetism with chi = -3.11 x 10(-3) emu mol(-1) at 1.8 K. The heat capacity of Cs8Na9.94(2)Tl6.06(2)Ge136 presented an Einstein peak at 10 K. The fitted parameters for Cs8Na9.94(2)Tl6.06(2)Ge136 were chi = 0.115(4) J mol(-1) K-2, beta = 0.0289(2) J mol(-1) K-4, N-E = 7.94(4), theta(E) = 56.9(1) K, N-D = 152.06(4) and theta(D) = 217(1) K using the equation C-p = C-e + C-D + C-E from 1.8 K to 10 K. The thermoelectric measurement showed metallic resistivity and a negative Seebeck coefficient, indicating electron-type charge carriers. The electronic structure calculation for Cs8Na10Tl6Ge136 confirmed the nature of the metallic transport behavior with conducting electrons, mainly from the Ge p orbitals.

Abstract:Local structure of Cu in a type-I Ba8Cu4Si42 clathrate has been investigated by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, Cu K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) and theoretical calculation. It is found that XANES spectra cannot be explained by the substitution of Cu atoms at Si16i, and Si24k positions. Our calculations show that the binding energies of the Si atom in Si16i, Si24k and Si6c positions are 9.000, 9.495 and 8.911eV, respectively. Both experimental and theoretical results support that Cu atoms in the type-I Ba8Cu4Si42 clathrate, as a doped element, prefer to occupy the least-binding Si, i.e., the Si6c sites. No structural change between 112 and 300K was observed and the (100)-faceted cubic crystal has negligible distortion/ordering according to transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:Type-I clathrates of K7.69(2)Cu2.94(6)Ge43.06(6) and Rb8Ag2.79(4)Ge43.21(4) are synthesized directly from the corresponding elements. The structures are resolved by powder XRD data by means of a least-squares technique using WinCSD program. The refined lattice parameters are a = 10.70783(3) = angstrom and a = 10.84493(3) angstrom for K7.69(2)Cu2.94(6)Ge43.06(6) and Rb8Ag2.79(4)Ge43.21(4), respectively. The electronic band structure and density of states indicate K8Cu3Ge43 and Rb8Ag3Ge43 are p-type semiconductors with narrow indirect band gaps of 0.33 and 0.24 eV. In addition, K7.69(2)Cu2.94(6)Ge43.06(6) displays a diamagnetism with chi = -1.102(1) x 10(-3) emu mol(-1) in the field of 7 T at 400 K and has a strong Einstein model with theta(E) = 56.3(1) K and theta(D) = 297(3) K.
Pressure induced amorphization and collapse of magnetic order in type-I clathrate Eu8Ga16Ge30

Abstract:We investigate the low temperature structural and electronic properties of the type-I clathrate Eu8Ga16Ge30 under pressure using x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques. The XRD measurements reveal a transition to an amorphous phase above 18 GPa. Unlike previous reports on other clathrate compounds, no volume-collapse is observed prior to the crystalline-amorphous phase transition which takes place when the unit cell volume is reduced to 81% of its ambient pressure value. Fits of the pressure-dependent relative volume to a Murnaghan equation of state (EOS) yield a bulk modulus B0 = 65+-3 GPa and a pressure derivative B'0 = 3.3+-0.5. The Eu L2-edge XMCD data shows quenching of the magnetic order at the crystalline-amorphous phase transition. The XANES spectra indicate the persistence of Eu2+ valency state up to 22 GPa, therefore the suppression of XMCD intensity is due to the loss of magnetic order as a result of frustrated exchange interactions in the amorphous phase, and not due to quenching of local moments. When compared with other clathrates, the results point to the importance of guest ion-cage interactions in determining the mechanical stability of the framework structure and the critical pressure for amorphization. Finally, the crystalline structure is not found to recover after pressure release, resulting in a novel amorphous material that is at least metastable at ambient pressure and temperature.

Clathrate formation in the systems Sr-Cu-Ge and {Ba,Sr}-Cu-Ge

Abstract:In the ternary system Sr-Cu-Ge, a clathrate type-I phase, Sr8Cu5.3Ge40.7 (a = 1.06311(3), exists close to the Zintl limit in a small temperature interval. Sr8Cu5.3Ge40.7 decomposes eutectoidally on cooling at 730°C into (Ge), SrGe2 and tau1-SrCu2-xGe2+x. Phase equilibria at 700°C have been established for the Ge rich part and are characterized by the appearance of only one ternary compound, tau1-SrCu2-xGe2+x, which crystallizes with the ThCr2Si2 structure type and forms a homogeneity range up to x=0.4 (a = 0.42850(4), c = 1.0370(1) nm). Additionally, the extent of the clathrate type-I solid solution Ba8-xSrxCuyGe46-y (5.2 < y < 5.4) has been studied at various temperatures. The clathrate type-I crystal structure (space group ) has been proven by X-ray single crystal diffraction on two single crystals with composition Sr8Cu5.3Ge40.7 (a = 1.06368(2) nm) and Ba4.9Sr3.1Cu5.3Ge40.7 (a = 1.06748(2) nm) measured at 300, 200 and 100 K. From the temperature dependency of the lattice parameters and the atomic displacement parameters, the thermal expansion coefficients, the Debye- and Einstein-temperatures and the speed of sound have been determined. From heat capacity measurements of Sr8Cu5.3Ge40.7 at low temperatures, the Sommerfeld coefficient and the Debye temperature have been extracted, whereas from a detailed analysis of these data at higher temperatures, Einstein branches of the phonon dispersion relation have been derived and compared with those obtained from the atomic displacement parameters. Electrical resistivity measurements of Sr8Cu5.3Ge40.7 reveal a rather metallic behaviour in the low temperature range (< 300 K).

Abstract:We discuss physical properties of two metallic clathrate compounds with low carrier concentration: Eu8Ga16Ge30, the first clathrate known to date, for which the ‘guest’ sites are fully occupied by ‘rattling’ lanthanide ions, and Ba6Ge25. Eu8Ga16Ge30 exists in two modifications which both contain divalent Eu ions and order ferromagnetically at low temperatures (TC=10.5K and 36K, respectively). In Ba6Ge25 some of the ‘rattling’ Ba atoms lock, perhaps randomly, into split positions near 200K. A BCS-like superconducting phase transition takes place at Tc=0.14K. Tc increases almost 20-fold, as the structural distortion is suppressed under hydrostatic pressure.

Abstract:Single crystals of a new germanium clathrate, Ba24Ge100, were synthesized by the Czochralsky pulling method using a tetra-arc furnace under an Ar atmosphere. The crystal structure was studied by X-ray single-crystal analysis. The clathrate crystallized in the cubic space group P4132 with a=14.5635(7) Å, V=3088.9(2) Å3. The final refinement using 903 unique reflections converged at R=0.032 and Rw=0.036. In the structure, germanium atoms are linked by sp3σ-bonds to form a three-dimensional network, in which barium atoms are enclosed. There are three sites for the barium atoms having different coordination environments. One site is in a Ge20 dodecahedron and the others are coordinated with 20 Ge atoms and 8 Ge atoms, respectively.

Theoretical exploration of novel boron–carbon clathrate in Sr(B,C)10 at high pressure

Abstract:The discovery of clathrate SrB 3 C 3 under high pressure has inspired the exploration of new B–C clathrates. Here, we studied the structural evolution of a B–C framework over B and C contents in Sr(B,C) 10 at a pressure of 0–20 GPa using an unbiased structure search method in combination with first principles calculations. Analysis of the formation enthalpies and lattice dynamics suggest that a clathrate SrB 8 C 2 and two 'tubular-like' SrB 7 C 3 and SrB 9 C may be synthesized at 20 GPa and quenched to ambient pressure. All compounds have excellent mechanical properties with Vickers hardness reaching 23.6–32.1 GPa. The 'tubular-like' SrB 7 C 3 and SrB 9 C are metals with their Fermi level crossing the bonding and antibonding states of B-p orbitals, respectively. However, unexpectedly, the clathrate SrB 8 C 2 is a semiconductor with a direct bandgap of 0.3 eV and is fundamentally different from metallic SrB 3 C 3 . The calculated thermoelectric figure of merit ZT of SrB 8 C 2 is 0.47, indicating that it is a potential thermoelectric material. The findings highlight the diversity of structures and physical properties of this new family of ternary B–C compounds.

Abstract:Intermetallic clathrates are materials characterized by a large cage structure where guest atoms can move anharmonically, providing these materials exotic thermoelectric properties. Unfortunately, the dynamical and atomic nature of the rattling phonons, and their interactions with the electronic structure, are not fully understood. Here, we report that a germanium isotope effect can trigger an inherent guest rattling and cage distortion in clathrate Ba8Ga16Ge30 (BGG). Raman-scattering spectroscopy and advanced electron microscopy demonstrate that the atomic germanium isotope effect induces an off-centre rattling at the 6d sites as well as a tetrakaidecahedron deformation which is anisotropic for n-type BGG but isotropic for p-type BGG. The present findings indicate that the large n-type germanium isotope effect arises from the strong electron-phonon coupling, which opens up a novel avenue for manipulating dynamical motions of phonons via atomic isotope engineering.
Ab-initio Study on the Structural and Spectral Properties of Ce3+ in Strontium Silicates Phosphors

Abstract:The structural properties and the 4f→5d transitions of Ce3+ in strontium silicates (Sr3SiO5 and Sr2SiO4) were investigated using the density functional theory (DFT) with the supercell models and the wavefunction-based CASSCF/CASPT2 embedded cluster methods. The calculated 4f→5d transition energies are associated with two types of Ce3+ sites and show good consistency with the experimental spectra available. Moreover, the crystal-field parameters and the anisotropic g-tensors as well as the signs of the product of the principal g-values (gxgygz) for Ce3+ sites were obtained based on the calculated energies and wavefunctions.

Abstract:The clathrate compound Ba6Ge25 and its relatives consist of a rigid germanium skeleton, into which barium or other metal atoms are coordinated. These guest atoms can "rattle" freely at high temperatures, but in Ba6Ge25 some of them lock randomly into split positions below T-S similar to 200 K, The resulting bad metal undergoes a BCS-like superconducting transition at T-c similar or equal to 0.24 K. T-c increases more than 16-fold, as Ts is suppressed by hydrostatic pressure p, but changes only slightly with p from T-c similar or equal to 0.84 K in the undistorted sister compound Ba4Na2Ge25. The large enhancement of T-c in Ba6Ge25 may be attributed mainly to the pressure tuning of strong disorder caused by the random displacement of Ba atoms at T-S.

Abstract:Intermetallic clathrates are the representative of nano-cage structured material. A dimorphic clathrate Ba8Ga16Sn30$$\mathrm{Ba}_{8} \mathrm{Ga}_{16} \mathrm{Sn}_{30}$$ possesses type-I and type-VIII structures. The type-I compound displays the glasslike thermal conductivity with a plateau at 4–12 K, which is ascribed to the strong interaction of acoustic phonons with the low-energy off-center rattling mode. In the type-VIII compound, the Ba guest is vibrating nearly on center of the distorted dodecahedron. Nevertheless, the thermal conductivity is as low as 0.7 W/Km for T>$$T>$$ 300 K. The carrier type and its density in single crystals can be tuned by controlling the initial amount of flux, Ga or Sn. Further optimization of carrier density by alloying has led to high ZT of 1.0 and 1.45 for p- and n-type, respectively, at around 500 K, where the conventional materials based on Bi-Te and Pb-Te had a valley in ZT. By assembling p- and n-type legs made of Ba8Ga16Sn30$$\mathrm{Ba}_{8} \mathrm{Ga}_{16} \mathrm{Sn}_{30}$$, a module was prepared with the segments of Bi-Te legs. The conversion efficiency reached 7.5 % at the temperature difference of 390 K.

Abstract:We have mostly performed vibrational studies of Type-II silicon-germanium clathrate alloys, namely, Si136-xGex (0 < x ≤ 128), using periodic density functional theory (DFT). Our computed lattice constant for various stoichiometric amount, namely, x, of Ge agrees to some extent with the observed X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, along with monotonically increasing dependence on x. According to our bandgap energy calculation via Vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP), Si128Ge8 has a "nearly-direct" bandgap of approximately 1.27 eV, which agrees well with the previously calculated result (~1.23 eV), which was obtained using the Cambridge sequential simulation total energy package (CASTEP). Most of our first-principles calculations focus on exploring the low-energy transverse acoustic (TA) phonons that contribute dominantly to the induction of negative thermal expansion (NTE) behavior. Moreover, our work has predicted that the Si104Ge32 framework exhibits NTE in the temperature range of 3-80 K, compared to the temperature regime (10-140 K) of NTE observed in such pure Si136. It is posited that the increased number of Ge-Ge bonds may weaken the NTE effect substantially, as the composition, which is denoted as x, in Si136-xGex is elevated from 32 (or 40) to 96 (or 104).
