Abstract:Driver distraction is a well-known cause for traffic collisions worldwide. Studies have indicated that shared steering control, which actively provides haptic guidance torque on the steering wheel, effectively improves the performance of distracted drivers. Recently, adaptive shared steering control based on the physiological status of the driver has been developed, although its effect on distracted driver behavior remains unclear. To this end, a high-fidelity driving simulator experiment was conducted involving 18 participants performing double lane changes. The experimental conditions comprised two driver states: attentive and distracted. Under each condition, evaluations were performed on three types of haptic guidance: none (manual), fixed authority, and adaptive authority based on feedback from the forearm surface electromyography of the driver. Evaluation results indicated that, for both attentive and distracted drivers, haptic guidance with adaptive authority yielded lower driver workload and reduced lane departure risk than manual driving and fixed authority. Moreover, there was a tendency for distracted drivers to reduce grip strength on the steering wheel to follow the haptic guidance with fixed authority, resulting in a relatively shorter double lane change duration.

Abstract:Haptic guidance in a shared steering assistance system has drawn significant attention in intelligent vehicle fields, owing to its mutual communication ability for vehicle control. By exerting continuous torque on the steering wheel, both the driver and support system can share lateral control of the vehicle. However, current haptic guidance steering systems demonstrate some deficiencies in assisting lane changing. This study explored a new steering interaction method, including the design and evaluation of an intention-based haptic shared steering system. Such an intention-based method can support both lane keeping and lane changing assistance, by detecting a driver's lane change intention. By using a deep learning-based method to model a driver's decision timing regarding lane crossing, an adaptive gain control method was proposed for realizing a steering control system. An intention consistency method was proposed to detect whether the driver and the system were acting towards the same target trajectories and to accurately capture the driver's intention. A driving simulator experiment was conducted to test the system performance. Participants were required to perform six trials with assistive methods and one trial without assistance. The results demonstrated that the supporting system decreased the lane departure risk in the lane keeping tasks and could support a fast and stable lane changing maneuver.

Abstract:The rapid development of the automobile industry has resulted in the development of many vehicles, increased traffic, and frequent accidents. The complexity of road conditions is a major contributor to the occurrence of traffic accidents. Drivers are distracted and hence unable to fully observe all road information and make optimal and timely driving decisions. This study proposes an auxiliary steering control system with force/tactile guidance (ASCFT) and its corresponding control strategy to address this problem. We combined vehicle autonomous path planning based on road condition information and the human–machine sharing control strategy, which integrated the manipulative force of the driver and a virtual guidance force on the steering wheel. Consequently, the ASCFT eliminated the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the steering wheels in favor of a force/tactile-assisted steering structure, providing the driver with a sense of steering force based on road information. Additionally, we proposed a smooth vehicle trajectory optimization method based on the improved RRT algorithm and a path-following controller based on the forecast information to achieve auxiliary safety driving. The ASCFT's performance was confirmed through constructing a fixed-base simulator experimental platform with the ASCFT. The results revealed that at the vehicle speed of 60 km/h and a handwheel rotation of 60°, the steering wheel was instantly released and turned back in about 3.5 s. Furthermore, predictive haptic feedback warned the driver of an upcoming obstacle.

Abstract:Shared steering control has been developed to reduce driver workload while keeping the driver in the control loop. A driver could integrate visual sensory information from the road ahead and haptic sensory information from the steering wheel to achieve better driving performance. Previous studies suggest that, compared with adaptive automation authority, fixed automation authority is not always appropriate with respect to human factors. This paper focuses on designing an adaptive shared steering control system via sEMG (surface electromyography) measurement from the forearm of the driver, and evaluates the effect of the system on driver behavior during a double lane change task. The shared steering control was achieved through a haptic guidance system which provided active assistance torque on the steering wheel. Ten subjects participated in a high-fidelity driving simulator experiment. Two types of adaptive algorithms were investigated: haptic guidance decreases when driver grip strength increases (HG-Decrease), and haptic guidance increases when driver grip strength increases (HG-Increase). These two algorithms were compared to manual driving and two levels of fixed authority haptic guidance, for a total of five experimental conditions. Evaluation of the driving systems was based on two sets of dependent variables: objective measures of driver behavior and subjective measures of driver workload. The results indicate that the adaptive authority of HG-Decrease yielded lower driver workload and reduced the lane departure risk compared to manual driving and fixed authority haptic guidance.
Modeling and analysis of driver behavior under shared control through weighted visual and haptic guidance

Abstract:For the optimum design of a driver-automation shared control system, an understanding of driver behavior based on measurements and modeling is crucial early in the development process. This paper presents a driver model through a weighting process of visual guidance from the road ahead and haptic guidance from a steering system for a lane-following task. The proposed weighting process describes the interaction of a driver with the haptic guidance steering and the driver reliance on it. A driving simulator experiment is conducted to identify the model parameters for driving manually and with haptic guidance. The proposed driver model matched the driver input torque with a satisfactory goodness of fit among fourteen participants after considering the individual differences. The validation results reveal that the simulated trajectory effectively followed the driving course by matching the measured trajectory, thereby indicating that the proposed driver model is capable of predicting driver behavior during haptic guidance. Furthermore, the effect of different degrees of driver reliance on driving performance is evaluated considering various driver states and with system failure via numerical analysis. The model evaluation results reveal the potential of the proposed driver model to be applied in the design and evaluation of a haptic guidance system.

Improvement of driver active interventions during automated driving by displaying trajectory pointers-A driving simulator study

Abstract:Objective: The handover of vehicle control from automated to manual operation is a critical aspect of interaction between drivers and automated driving systems (ADS). In some cases, it is possible that the ADS may fail to detect an object. In this event, the driver must be aware of the situation and resume control of the vehicle without assistance from the system. Consequently, the driver must fulfill the following 2 main roles while driving: (1) monitor the vehicle trajectory and surrounding traffic environment and (2) actively take over vehicle control if the driver identifies a potential issue along the trajectory. An effective human-machine interface (HMI) is required that enables the driver to fulfill these roles. This article proposes an HMI that constantly indicates the future position of the vehicle. Methods: This research used the Toyota Dynamic Driving Simulator to evaluate the effect of the proposed HMI and compares the proposed HMI with an HMI that notifies the driver when the vehicle trajectory changes. A total of 48 test subjects were divided into 2 groups of 24: One group used the HMI that constantly indicated the future position of the vehicle and the other group used the HMI that provided information when the vehicle trajectory changed. The following instructions were given to the test subjects: (1) to not hold the steering wheel and to allow the vehicle to drive itself, (2) to constantly monitor the surrounding traffic environment because the functions of the ADS are limited, and (3) to take over driving if necessary. The driving simulator experiments were composed of an initial 10-min acclimatization period and a 10-min evaluation period. Approximately 10 min after the start of the evaluation period, a scenario occurred in which the ADS failed to detect an object on the vehicle trajectory, potentially resulting in a collision if the driver did not actively take over control and manually avoid the object. Results: The collision avoidance rate of the HMI that constantly indicated the future position of the vehicle was higher than that of the HMI that notified the driver of trajectory changes, χ2 = 6.38, P < .05. The steering wheel hands-on and steering override timings were also faster with the proposed HMI (t test; P < .05). Conclusions: This research confirmed that constantly indicating the position of the vehicle several seconds in the future facilitates active driver intervention when an ADS is in operation.

Abstract:The lane keeping assistance system (LKAS), a representative of the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), comprises a shared control that cooperates with the driver to achieve a common goal. The experience of the driver through the steering wheel may vary significantly depending on the steering control strategy of the system. In this study, we examine how driving experience changes according to various steering control strategies. Based on the preliminary study and typical LKAS parameters, nine control strategies (3 torque amounts (TOR) x 3 deviations to start control (DEV)) were designed as a prototype. Eighteen participants participated in evaluating each strategy in a highway environment provided by a driving simulator. Two-way repeated measure ANOVA was used to assess the effects of the system. Both the objective measures (standard deviation of lane position, steering reversal rate, and root mean square of lateral speed) and subjective measures (pleasure and arousal of emotion, trust, disturbance, and satisfaction) are analyzed. The experimental results demonstrate that all dependent measures are significant. As the TOR increased, SDLP decreased. However, no difference is observed between the 2-Nm and 3-Nm TOR in terms of trust and satisfaction. The high disturbance and negative emotion in 3 Nm appear to be the cause. In terms of the DEV, the high level of the root mean square of the lateral speed is observed at 0.8 m. Further, negative effects are found in pleasure, trust, and satisfaction. There is little difference at all dependent measures between 0.0-m and 0.4-m DEV. In the regression model analyzed from the aspect of satisfaction, the 2.32-Nm TOR and 0.27-m DEV are the optimal values. We expect our research on shared steering control with an assistance system to be applied to the experience design of a lateral semi-autonomous vehicle.

Abstract:In conditional automation, a response from the driver is expected when a take over request is issued due to unexpected events, emergencies, or reaching the operational design domain boundaries. Cooperation between the automated driving system and the driver can help to guarantee a safe and pleasant transfer if the driver is guided through a haptic guidance system that applies a slight counter-steering force to the steering wheel. We examine in this work the impact of haptic guidance systems on driving performance after a take over request was triggered to avoid sudden obstacles on the road. We studied different driver conditions that involved Non-Driving Related Tasks (NRDT). Results showed that haptic guidance systems increased road safety by reducing the lateral error, the distance and reaction time to a sudden obstacle and the number of collisions.

Skin physiological parameters confirm the therapeutic efficacy of pimecrolimus cream 1% in patients with mild‐to‐moderate atopic dermatitis

Abstract:Abstract: In this double‐blind, within‐patient vehicle‐controlled study, patients with mild‐to‐moderate atopic dermatitis (AD) were treated for 3 weeks twice daily with pimecrolimus cream 1% on one forearm and with vehicle cream on the other forearm. Efficacy of treatment was assessed clinically using the Atopic Dermatitis Severity Index (ADSI), the Investigators Global Assessment (IGA) and the pruritus visual analogue scale. In parallel, blood microcirculation in the skin was measured as an objective parameter for skin inflammation. Skin hydration and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were monitored as parameter relevant for the barrier function. Treatment with pimecrolimus cream 1% resulted in a quick and marked improvement of signs and symptoms of AD and a significant reduction of microcirculation from 33.90 to 15.55 AU (P < 0.0001). Skin hydration increased continually from 42.86 to 52.69 AU (P = 0.002) and TEWL decreased from 35.30 to 21.50 g/m2/h (P = 0.001), indicating restoration of skin barrier. At vehicle‐treated sites changes of skin physiological parameters were less pronounced and observed only initially with later plateau or even reversal. At the end of the study, there were significant differences for all measured skin physiological parameters between pimecrolimus cream 1% and vehicle: microcirculation 12.15 AU (P = 0.004), skin hydration 7.12 AU (P = 0.002), TEWL 11.38 g/m2/h (P = 0.004). Non‐invasive evaluation of microcirculation and barrier functionality thus represent a valuable tool for the objective assessment of treatment response to pimecrolimus cream 1%.

Abstract:Vibrotactile stimuli can be effective as warning signals, but their effectiveness as directional take-over requests in automated driving is yet unknown. This study aimed to investigate the correct response rate, reaction times, and eye and head orientation for static versus dynamic directional take-over requests presented via vibrating motors in the driver seat. In a driving simulator, eighteen participants performed three sessions: 1) a session involving no driving (Baseline), 2) driving a highly automated car without additional task (HAD), and 3) driving a highly automated car while performing a mentally demanding task (N-Back). Per session, participants received four directional static (in the left or right part of the seat) and four dynamic (moving from one side towards the opposite left or right of the seat) take-over requests via two 6×4 motor matrices embedded in the seat back and bottom. In the Baseline condition, participants reported whether the cue was left or right, and in the HAD and N-Back conditions participants had to change lanes to the left or to the right according to the directional cue. The correct response rate was operationalized as the accuracy of the self-reported direction (Baseline session) and the accuracy of the lane change direction (HAD & N-Back sessions). The results showed that the correct response rate ranged between 94% for static patterns in the Baseline session and 74% for dynamic patterns in the N-Back session, although these effects were not statistically significant. Steering wheel touch and steering input reaction times were approximately 200ms faster for static patterns than for dynamic ones. Eye tracking results revealed a correspondence between head/eye-gaze direction and lane change direction, and showed that head and eye-gaze movements where initiated faster for static vibrations than for dynamic ones. In conclusion, vibrotactile stimuli presented via the driver seat are effective as warnings, but their effectiveness as directional take-over requests may be limited. The present study may encourage further investigation into how to get drivers safely back into the loop.

Abstract:It remains uncertain regarding the safety of driving in autonomous vehicles that, after a long, passive control and inattention to the driving situation, how the drivers will be effectively informed to take-over the control in emergency. In particular, the active role of vehicle force feedback on the driver's risk perception on curves has not been fully explored. To investigate it, the current paper examined the driver's cognitive and visual responses to the whole-body haptic feedback during curve negotiations. The effects of force feedback on drivers' responses on curves were investigated in a high-fidelity driving simulator while measuring EEG and visual gaze over ten participants. The preliminary analyses of the first two participants revealed that pupil diameter and fixation time on the curves were significantly longer when the driver received whole-body feedback, compared to none. The findings suggest that whole-body feedback can be used as an effective "advance notification" of hazards.

Abstract:Haptic-shared steering (HSS) systems have been reported to enhance vehicle safety and reduce the workload for drivers. However, few studies have focused on modeling the lateral vehicle control behaviors of distracted drivers for HSS. The current study models this type of behavior in a series of high-fidelity driving simulator experiments with 18 participants. Two experimental conditions for a double lane change task are tested: HGT-Constant (haptic guidance torque with a constant gain) and HGT-Adaptive (haptic guidance torque with an adaptive gain). A gated recurrent unit (GRU) network is used to model lateral control behavior during driving. The effectiveness of the GRU network-based lateral control model of distracted drivers is benchmarked using a state-of-the-art long short-term memory network, a back propagation network, an extreme learning machine, and a traditional two-point visual model with neuromuscular dynamics. Experimental results indicate that the GRU network has the highest accuracy in terms of root mean square error, mean absolute error, mean absolute percentage error, and determination coefficient. In addition, a simulation model of the driver-vehicle-road closed-loop system demonstrates that the proposed model predicts driver behavior with acceptable lateral position error.

Abstract:Drivers initiate a discretionary lane change when they perceive an anticipated improvement in their own driving condition from moving to another lane. However, such a lane change can slow down other vehicles on the target lane, and even worse initiate a disturbance. In this work, we argue that the blocking effect triggered by individual lane changes results from the heterogeneity in the desired speeds of vehicles, and thus using desired speed information of vehicles when regulating lane-changing decisions can improve traffic efficiency. In doing so, our work also exemplifies the usefulness of incorporating user preferences into control decisions. The proposed lane guidance system uses an optimization-based approach to update the target range of desired speeds on each lane in real time, and accordingly recommends individual lane changes. The control system coordinates the lane-changing decisions at the link level, for which the road stretch is subdivided into multiple sections that are controlled independently. We evaluate the performance of the lane guidance system in micro-simulation, for different network demands and desired speed distributions. The results highlight that the proposed approach utilizing the desired speed preferences of drivers results in positive efficiency gains for most traffic compositions in free flow. Moreover, the highest gains are expected in medium to high demand, and when the traffic composition includes a higher proportion of vehicles desiring higher speeds. The gains also increase when the desired speeds of vehicles that want to drive fast and those that want to drive slower are more separated.

Is Improved Lane Keeping During Cognitive Load Caused by Increased Physical Arousal or Gaze Concentration Toward the Road Center?

Abstract:Driver distraction is one of the main causes of motor-vehicle accidents. However, the impact on traffic safety of tasks that impose cognitive (non-visual) distraction remains debated. One particularly intriguing finding is that cognitive load seems to improve lane keeping performance, most often quantified as reduced standard deviation of lateral position (SDLP). The main competing hypotheses, supported by current empirical evidence, suggest that cognitive load improves lane keeping via either increased physical arousal, or higher gaze concentration toward the road center, but views are mixed regarding if, and how, these possible mediators influence lane keeping performance. Hence, a simulator study was conducted, with participants driving on a straight city road section whilst completing a cognitive task at different levels of difficulty. In line with previous studies, cognitive load led to increased physical arousal, higher gaze concentration toward the road center, and higher levels of micro-steering activity, accompanied by improved lane keeping performance. More importantly, during the high cognitive task, both physical arousal and gaze concentration changed earlier in time than micro-steering activity, which in turn changed earlier than lane keeping performance. In addition, our results did not show a significant correlation between gaze concentration and physical arousal on the level of individual task recordings. Based on these findings, various multilevel models for micro-steering activity and lane keeping performance were conducted and compared, and the results suggest that all of the mechanisms proposed by existing hypotheses could be simultaneously involved. In other words, it is suggested that cognitive load leads to: (i) an increase in arousal, causing increased micro-steering activity, which in turn improves lane keeping performance, and (ii) an increase in gaze concentration, causing lane keeping improvement through both (a) further increased micro-steering activity and (b) a tendency to steer toward the gaze target.

Abstract:The thesis presents contributions made to the evaluation and design of a haptic guidance system on improving driving performance in cases of normal and degraded visual information, which are based on behavior experiments, modeling and numerical simulations. The effect of shared control on driver behavior in cases of normal and degraded visual information has been successfully evaluated experimentally and numerically. The evaluation results indicate that the proposed haptic guidance system is capable of providing reliable haptic information, and is effective on improving lane following performance in the conditions of visual occlusion from road ahead and declined visual attention under fatigue driving. Moreover, the appropriate degree of haptic guidance is highly related to the reliability of visual information perceived by the driver, which suggests that designing the haptic guidance system based on the reliability of visual information would allow for greater driver acceptance. Furthermore, the parameterized driver model, which considers the integrated feedback of visual and haptic information, is capable of predicting driver behavior under shared control, and has the potential of being used for designing and evaluating the haptic guidance system.

Abstract:An advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) is critical to driver–vehicle-interaction systems. Driving behaviour modelling and control significantly improves the global performance of ADASs. A haptic assistive system assists the driver by providing a specific torque on the steering wheel according to the driving–vehicle–road profile to improve the steering control. However, the main problem is designing a compensator dealing with the high-level uncertainties in different driving scenarios with haptic driver assistance, where different personalities and diverse perceptions of drivers are considered. These differences can lead to poor driving performance if not properly accounted for. This paper focuses on designing a data-driven model-free compensator considering various driving behaviours with a haptic feedback system. A backpropagation neural network (BPNN) models driving behaviour based on real driving data (speed, acceleration, vehicle orientation, and current steering angle). Then, the genetic algorithm (GA) optimises the integral time absolute error (ITEA) function to produce the best multiple PID compensation parameters for various driving behaviours (such as speeding/braking, lane-keeping and turning), which are then utilised by the fuzzy logic to provide different driving commands. An experiment was conducted with five participants in a driving simulator. During the second experiment, seven participants drove in the simulator to evaluate the robustness of the proposed combined GA proportional-integral-derivative (PID) offline, and the fuzzy-PID controller applied online. The third experiment was conducted to validate the proposed data-driven controller. The experiment and simulation results evaluated the ITAE of the lateral displacement and yaw angle during various driving behaviours. The results validated the proposed method by significantly enhancing the driving performance.

Abstract:The resection of the first rib with a transaxillary approach has been used in the operative treatment of this condition. This approach is though to have more advantages over the anterior (supraclavicular) or posterior (parascapular) ones. The segment resection of the middle third of clavicle would not seem to be justified in these cases. A case is reported in details, where the results support their concept.

Abstract:This study investigates the role of haptic feedback in a car-following scenario, where information about the motion of the front vehicle is provided through a virtual elastic connection with it. Using a robotic interface in a simulated driving environment, we examined the impact of varying levels of such haptic feedback on the driver's ability to follow the road while avoiding obstacles. The results of an experiment with 15 subjects indicate that haptic feedback from the front car's motion can significantly improve driving control (i.e., reduce motion jerk and deviation from the road) and reduce mental load (evaluated via questionnaire). This suggests that haptic communication, as observed between physically interacting humans, can be leveraged to improve safety and efficiency in automated driving systems, warranting further testing in real driving scenarios.
