Abstract:This study investigated human-machine cooperation when driving with different degrees of a shared control system. By means of a direct intervention on the steering wheel, shared control systems partially correct the vehicle's trajectory and, at the same time, provide continuous haptic guidance to the driver. A crucial point is to determine the optimal level of steering assistance for effective cooperation between the two agents. Five system settings were compared with a condition in which no assistance was present. In addition, road visibility was manipulated by means of additional fog or self-controlled visual occlusions. Several performance indicators and subjective assessments were analyzed. The results show that the best repartition of control in terms of cooperation between human and machine can be identified through an analysis of the steering wheel reversal rate, the steering effort and the mean lateral position of the vehicle. The best cooperation was achieved with systems of relatively low-level haptic authority, although more intervention may be preferable in poor visibility conditions. Increasing haptic authority did not yield higher benefits in terms of steering behavior, visual demand or subjective feeling.

Abstract:Accident analyses repeatedly reported the considerable contribution of run-off-road incidents to fatalities in road traffic, and despite considerable advances in assistive technologies to mitigate devastating consequences, little insight into the drivers' brain response during such accident scenarios has been gained. While various literature documents neural correlates to steering motion, the driver's mental state, and the impact of distraction and fatigue on driving performance, the cortical substrate of continuous deviations of a car from the road – i.e., how the brain represents a varying discrepancy between the intended and observed car position and subsequently assigns customized levels of corrective measures – remains unclear. Furthermore, the superposition of multiple subprocesses, such as visual and erroneous feedback processing, performance monitoring, or motor control, complicates a clear interpretation of engaged brain regions within car driving tasks. In the present study, we thus attempted to disentangle these subprocesses, employing passive and active steering conditions within both error-free and error-prone vehicle operation conditions. We recorded EEG signals of 26 participants in 13 sessions, simultaneously measuring pairs of Executors (actively steering) and Observers (strictly observing) during a car driving task. We observed common brain patterns in the Executors regardless of error-free or error-prone vehicle operation, albeit with a shift in spectral activity from motor beta to occipital alpha oscillations within erroneous conditions. Further, significant frontocentral differences between Observers and Executors, tracing back to the caudal anterior cingulate cortex, arose during active steering conditions, indicating increased levels of motor-behavioral cognitive control. Finally, we present regression results of both the steering signal and the car position, indicating that a regression of continuous deviations from the road utilizing the EEG might be feasible.

Comparing spatially static and dynamic vibrotactile take-over requests in the driver seat

Abstract:Vibrotactile stimuli can be effective as warning signals, but their effectiveness as directional take-over requests in automated driving is yet unknown. This study aimed to investigate the correct response rate, reaction times, and eye and head orientation for static versus dynamic directional take-over requests presented via vibrating motors in the driver seat. In a driving simulator, eighteen participants performed three sessions: 1) a session involving no driving (Baseline), 2) driving a highly automated car without additional task (HAD), and 3) driving a highly automated car while performing a mentally demanding task (N-Back). Per session, participants received four directional static (in the left or right part of the seat) and four dynamic (moving from one side towards the opposite left or right of the seat) take-over requests via two 6×4 motor matrices embedded in the seat back and bottom. In the Baseline condition, participants reported whether the cue was left or right, and in the HAD and N-Back conditions participants had to change lanes to the left or to the right according to the directional cue. The correct response rate was operationalized as the accuracy of the self-reported direction (Baseline session) and the accuracy of the lane change direction (HAD & N-Back sessions). The results showed that the correct response rate ranged between 94% for static patterns in the Baseline session and 74% for dynamic patterns in the N-Back session, although these effects were not statistically significant. Steering wheel touch and steering input reaction times were approximately 200ms faster for static patterns than for dynamic ones. Eye tracking results revealed a correspondence between head/eye-gaze direction and lane change direction, and showed that head and eye-gaze movements where initiated faster for static vibrations than for dynamic ones. In conclusion, vibrotactile stimuli presented via the driver seat are effective as warnings, but their effectiveness as directional take-over requests may be limited. The present study may encourage further investigation into how to get drivers safely back into the loop.
Modeling the Effect of Driving Experience on Lane Keeping Performance Using ACT-R Cognitive Architecture

Abstract:ACT-R (adaptive control of thought-rational) is a computational cognitive architecture that consists of multiple modules for perception and attention (e.g., a visual module), response making (e.g., a motor module), and mental information processing (e.g., a goal module, declarative memory module, and procedural memory module). The output of an ACT-R model is a time course that shows the coordination of the activation of these modules in solving a cognitive task. The research reported in this paper used a driver performance model developed in ACT-R to examine the effect of driving experience on driversperformance of vehicle lateral position control. First, we compared the lane keeping performance between novice and experienced drivers in a simulated driving experiment with different road, speed, and driving conditions. Behavioral data collected from both groups of drivers were then modeled in the ACT-R driving model to analyze the cognitive mechanisms of the behaviors. The modeling results were similar to the human results. There were two main findings. (1) Novice drivers had poor lateral control skills evidenced by significantly greater lateral deviation compared with experienced drivers. The lack of control was more evident on curved roads than on straight roads. On curved roads, the novice driversdriving paths significantly shifted to the outside of the curve, whereas there was no such shift for experienced drivers. (2) The cognitive-architecture-based modeling in ACT-R revealed the mental processes including parallel processing between modules and serial processing between sub-tasks. One of the factors responsible for the difference in curved-road driving paths between the two groups of drivers may be the location of visual attention focus. Our model showed that the behavioral difference in curved-road driving paths can be modeled by assigning a visual attention focus point to the novice-driver model that is closer than that assigned to the experienced-driver model. The method and results of this study can be used to provide cognitive-psychological bases for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of driver training courses and developing intelligent driving assistance systems. This research also provides an application example and a successful experience of computational cognitive modeling using cognitive architectures such as ACT-R.
Effect of Driving Experience on Collision Avoidance Braking: an Experimental Investigation and Computational Modelling

Abstract:Information technologies have been developed to facilitate driving performance and improve safety. However, there is a lack of computational methods that can take into account drivers' adaptation to driving. That is, how behaviour changes with experience. Modelling the effect of driving experience on driver behaviour is important to the development of in-vehicle information technologies, because drivers at different skill levels may need different types or levels of assistance. Cognitive-architecture-based human performance modelling is a valuable method that can integrate different cognitive aspects underlying human behaviour such as skill levels and support quantitative simulation of behaviour. The study reported in this paper tested and examined computational models built in ACT-R (Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational) to account for the effect of driving experience on collision avoidance braking behaviour. The modelling results were compared with human data collected from a simulated driving experiment. The models produced braking behavioural results similar to the human results. Moreover, model predictions of three other emergent-braking scenarios were generally similar to and in the same order with the empirical results reported in previous studies. Future research can further integrate the method and results into intelligent driver assistance systems such as collision warning systems to better adjust the systems to the need of different drivers with different skill levels.

Abstract:While driving on highways, every driver tries to be aware of the behavior of surrounding vehicles, including possible emergency braking, evasive maneuvers trying to avoid obstacles, unexpected lane changes, or other emergencies that could lead to an accident. In this paper, human's ability to predict lane changes in highway scenarios is analyzed through the use of video sequences extracted from the PREVENTION dataset, a database focused on the development of research on vehicle intention and trajectory prediction. Thus, users had to indicate the moment at which they considered that a lane change maneuver was taking place in a target vehicle, subsequently indicating its direction: left or right. The results retrieved have been carefully analyzed and compared to ground truth labels, evaluating statistical models to understand whether humans can actually predict. The study has revealed that most participants are unable to anticipate lane-change maneuvers, detecting them after they have started. These results might serve as a baseline for AI's prediction ability evaluation, grading if those systems can outperform human skills by analyzing hidden cues that seem unnoticed, improving the detection time, and even anticipating maneuvers in some cases.

Abstract:Since December 2001, we have been conducting a project to isolate and determine entire sequences of mouse KIAA cDNA clones, which encode polypeptides corresponding to human KIAA proteins. The ultimate goal of this project has been elucidation of the functions of KIAA proteins. To address this issue, we have been generating 'libraries' of antibodies against mKIAA proteins. We have, to date, already generated >800 antibodies. Using our 'libraries' of antibodies, we are now identifying endogenous mKIAA protein-protein interactions. In the present study, novel interactions were identified by MS/MS analysis following immunoprecipitation with anti-mKIAA antibodies. The interactions with biologically known molecules should enable us to predict the function of mKIAA/KIAA proteins, including hypothetical proteins identified in our cDNA project. These interactions are subsequently used for construction of an intracellular pathway related to the mKIAA protein, and the pathway is distributed through the InCeP (IntraCellular Pathway based on mKIAA protein-protein interactions) database. Users can freely access the InCeP through the internet and download the graphical display as well as the curated information.
The effect of information from dash-based human-machine interfaces on drivers' gaze patterns and lane-change manoeuvres after conditionally automated driving

Abstract:The goal of this paper was to measure the effect of Human-Machine Interface (HMI) information and guidance on drivers' gaze and takeover behaviour during transitions of control from automation. The motivation for this study came from a gap in the literature, where previous research reports improved performance of drivers' takeover based on HMI information, without considering its effect on drivers' visual attention distribution, and how drivers also use the information available in the environment to guide their response. This driving simulator study investigated drivers' lane-changing behaviour after resumption of control from automation. Different levels of information were provided on a dash-based HMI, prior to each lane change, to investigate how drivers distribute their attention between the surrounding environment and the HMI. The difficulty of the lane change was also manipulated by controlling the position of approaching vehicles in drivers' offside lane. Results indicated that drivers' decision-making time was sensitive to the presence of nearby vehicles in the offside lane, but not directly influenced by the information on the HMI. In terms of gaze behaviour, the closer the position of vehicles in the offside lane, the longer drivers looked in that direction. Drivers looked more at the HMI, and less towards the road centre, when the HMI presented information about automation status, and included an advisory message indicating it was safe to change lane. Machine learning techniques showed a strong relationship between drivers' gaze to the information presented on the HMI, and decision-making time (DMT). These results contribute to our understanding of HMI design for automated vehicles, by demonstrating the attentional costs of an overly-informative HMI, and that drivers still rely on environmental information to perform a lane-change, even when the same information can be acquired by the HMI of the vehicle.
A Study on Shared Steering Control in Driving Experience Perspective: How Strong and How Soon Should Intervention Be?

Abstract:The lane keeping assistance system (LKAS), a representative of the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), comprises a shared control that cooperates with the driver to achieve a common goal. The experience of the driver through the steering wheel may vary significantly depending on the steering control strategy of the system. In this study, we examine how driving experience changes according to various steering control strategies. Based on the preliminary study and typical LKAS parameters, nine control strategies (3 torque amounts (TOR) x 3 deviations to start control (DEV)) were designed as a prototype. Eighteen participants participated in evaluating each strategy in a highway environment provided by a driving simulator. Two-way repeated measure ANOVA was used to assess the effects of the system. Both the objective measures (standard deviation of lane position, steering reversal rate, and root mean square of lateral speed) and subjective measures (pleasure and arousal of emotion, trust, disturbance, and satisfaction) are analyzed. The experimental results demonstrate that all dependent measures are significant. As the TOR increased, SDLP decreased. However, no difference is observed between the 2-Nm and 3-Nm TOR in terms of trust and satisfaction. The high disturbance and negative emotion in 3 Nm appear to be the cause. In terms of the DEV, the high level of the root mean square of the lateral speed is observed at 0.8 m. Further, negative effects are found in pleasure, trust, and satisfaction. There is little difference at all dependent measures between 0.0-m and 0.4-m DEV. In the regression model analyzed from the aspect of satisfaction, the 2.32-Nm TOR and 0.27-m DEV are the optimal values. We expect our research on shared steering control with an assistance system to be applied to the experience design of a lateral semi-autonomous vehicle.

Abstract:Haptic guidance in a shared steering assistance system has drawn significant attention in intelligent vehicle fields, owing to its mutual communication ability for vehicle control. By exerting continuous torque on the steering wheel, both the driver and support system can share lateral control of the vehicle. However, current haptic guidance steering systems demonstrate some deficiencies in assisting lane changing. This study explored a new steering interaction method, including the design and evaluation of an intention-based haptic shared steering system. Such an intention-based method can support both lane keeping and lane changing assistance, by detecting a driver's lane change intention. By using a deep learning-based method to model a driver's decision timing regarding lane crossing, an adaptive gain control method was proposed for realizing a steering control system. An intention consistency method was proposed to detect whether the driver and the system were acting towards the same target trajectories and to accurately capture the driver's intention. A driving simulator experiment was conducted to test the system performance. Participants were required to perform six trials with assistive methods and one trial without assistance. The results demonstrated that the supporting system decreased the lane departure risk in the lane keeping tasks and could support a fast and stable lane changing maneuver.
Effects of Cognitive Distraction on Lane-keeping: Performance Loss or Improvement?

Abstract:Cognitive distraction while driving often reduces the variability of lane position. However, data do not make clear whether this effect should be interpreted as a performance loss, indicating driver rigidity or unresponsiveness to external stimuli, or a performance improvement, indicating better vehicle control. To distinguish these possibilities, the present study assessed drivers’ responsiveness to heavy lateral winds under varying levels of working memory load. Cognitive load reduced the variability of lane position, increased drivers’ steering reversal rate, and increased the coherence between steering wheel position and lateral wind velocity. Results suggest that cognitive distraction improved lateral lane keeping, rather than inducing rigidified steering manipulation.

Abstract:Driver distraction is one of the main causes of motor-vehicle accidents. However, the impact on traffic safety of tasks that impose cognitive (non-visual) distraction remains debated. One particularly intriguing finding is that cognitive load seems to improve lane keeping performance, most often quantified as reduced standard deviation of lateral position (SDLP). The main competing hypotheses, supported by current empirical evidence, suggest that cognitive load improves lane keeping via either increased physical arousal, or higher gaze concentration toward the road center, but views are mixed regarding if, and how, these possible mediators influence lane keeping performance. Hence, a simulator study was conducted, with participants driving on a straight city road section whilst completing a cognitive task at different levels of difficulty. In line with previous studies, cognitive load led to increased physical arousal, higher gaze concentration toward the road center, and higher levels of micro-steering activity, accompanied by improved lane keeping performance. More importantly, during the high cognitive task, both physical arousal and gaze concentration changed earlier in time than micro-steering activity, which in turn changed earlier than lane keeping performance. In addition, our results did not show a significant correlation between gaze concentration and physical arousal on the level of individual task recordings. Based on these findings, various multilevel models for micro-steering activity and lane keeping performance were conducted and compared, and the results suggest that all of the mechanisms proposed by existing hypotheses could be simultaneously involved. In other words, it is suggested that cognitive load leads to: (i) an increase in arousal, causing increased micro-steering activity, which in turn improves lane keeping performance, and (ii) an increase in gaze concentration, causing lane keeping improvement through both (a) further increased micro-steering activity and (b) a tendency to steer toward the gaze target.

Abstract:It remains uncertain regarding the safety of driving in autonomous vehicles that, after a long, passive control and inattention to the driving situation, how the drivers will be effectively informed to take-over the control in emergency. In particular, the active role of vehicle force feedback on the driver's risk perception on curves has not been fully explored. To investigate it, the current paper examined the driver's cognitive and visual responses to the whole-body haptic feedback during curve negotiations. The effects of force feedback on drivers' responses on curves were investigated in a high-fidelity driving simulator while measuring EEG and visual gaze over ten participants. The preliminary analyses of the first two participants revealed that pupil diameter and fixation time on the curves were significantly longer when the driver received whole-body feedback, compared to none. The findings suggest that whole-body feedback can be used as an effective "advance notification" of hazards.

Abstract:Autonomous navigation becomes complex when it is performed in an environment that lacks road signs and includes a variety of users, including vulnerable pedestrians. This article deals with the perception of collision risk from the viewpoint of a passenger sitting in the driver's seat who has delegated the total control of their vehicle to an autonomous system. The proposed study is based on an experiment that used a fixed-base driving simulator. The study was conducted using a group of 20 volunteer participants. Scenarios were developed to simulate avoidance manoeuvres that involved pedestrians walking at 4.5 kph and an autonomous vehicle that was otherwise driving in a straight line at 30 kph. The main objective was to compare two systems of risk perception: These included subjective risk assessments obtained with an analogue handset provided to the participants and electrodermal activity (EDA) that was measured using skin conductance sensors. The relationship between these two types of measures, which possibly relates to the two systems of risk perception, is not unequivocally described in the literature. This experiment addresses this relationship by manipulating two factors: The time-to-collision (TTC) at the initiation of a pedestrian avoidance manoeuvre and the lateral offset left between a vehicle and a pedestrian. These manipulations of vehicle dynamics made it possible to simulate different safety margins regarding pedestrians during avoidance manoeuvres. The conditional dependencies between the two systems and the manipulated factors were studied using hybrid Bayesian networks. This relationship was inferred by selecting the best Bayesian network structure based on the Bayesian information criterion. The results demonstrate that the reduction of safety margins increases risk perception according to both types of indicators. However, the increase in subjective risk is more pronounced than the physiological response. While the indicators cannot be considered redundant, data modeling suggests that the two risk perception systems are not independent.

Abstract:A pair of simulated driving experiments studied the effects of cognitive load on drivers' lane-keeping performance.Cognitive load while driving often reduces the variability of lane position. However, there is no agreement as to whether this effect should be interpreted as a performance loss, consistent with other effects of distraction on driving, or as an anomalous performance gain.Participants in a high-fidelity driving simulator performed a lane-keeping task in lateral wind,with instructions to keep a steady lane position. Under high load conditions, participants performed a concurrent working memory task with auditory stimuli. Cross-spectral analysis measured the relationship between wind force and steering inputs.Cognitive load reduced the variability of lane position and increased the coupling between steering wheel position and crosswind strength.Although cognitive load disrupts driver performance in a variety of ways, it produces a performance gain in lane keeping.This effect appears to reflect drivers' efforts to protect lateral control against the risk of distraction, at the apparent neglect of other elements of driving performance.Results may inform educational efforts to help drivers understand the risks of distraction and the inadequacies of compensatory driving strategies.
Reward and expectancy effects on neural signals of motor preparation and execution

Abstract:Abstract The prospect of rewards can have strong modulatory effects on response preparation. Importantly, selection and execution of movements in real life happens under an environment characterized by uncertainty and dynamic changes. The current study investigated how the brain’s motor system adapts to the dynamic changes in the environment in pursuit of rewards. In addition, we studied how the prefrontal cognitive control system contributes in this adaptive control of motor behavior. To this end, we tested the effect of rewards and expectancy on the hallmark neural signals that reflect activity in motor and prefrontal systems, the lateralized readiness potential (LRP) and the mediofrontal (mPFC) theta oscillations, while participants performed an expected and unexpected action to retrieve rewards. To better capture the dynamic changes in neural processes represented in the LRP waveform, we decomposed the LRP into the preparation (LRP prep ) and execution (LRP exec ) components. The overall pattern of LRP prep and LRP exec confirmed that they each reflect motor preparation based on the expectancy and motor execution when making a response that is either or not in line with the expectations. In the comparison of LRP magnitude across task conditions, we found a greater LRP prep when large rewards were more likely, reflecting a greater motor preparation to obtain larger rewards. We also found a greater LRP exec when large rewards were presented unexpectedly, suggesting a greater motor effort placed for executing a correct movement when presented with large rewards. In the analysis of mPFC theta, we found a greater theta power prior to performing an unexpected than expected response, indicating its contribution in response conflict resolution. Collectively, these results demonstrate an optimized motor control to maximize rewards under the dynamic changes of real-life environment.

Translating methods from human-robot interaction (HRI) studies to the interaction between humans and other highly complex machines (e.g. semi-autonomous vehicles) could help advance the use of those machines in scenarios requiring human interaction. One method involves understanding human intentions and decision-making to estimate the human's present and near-future actions whilst interacting with a robot. This idea originates from the psychological concept of Theory of Mind, which has been broadly explored for robotics and recently for autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles. In this work, we explored how to predict human intentions before an action is performed by combining data from human-motion, vehicle-state and human inputs (e.g. steering wheel, pedals). A data-driven approach based on Recurrent Neural Network models was used to classify the current driving manoeuvre and to predict the future manoeuvre to be performed. A state-transition model was used with a fixed set of manoeuvres to label data recorded during the trials for real-time applications. Models were trained and tested using drivers of different seat preferences, driving expertise and arm-length; precision and recall metrics over 95% for manoeuvre identification and 86% for manoeuvre prediction were achieved, with prediction time-windows of up to 1 second for both known and unknown test subjects. Compared to our previous results, performance improved and manoeuvre prediction was possible for unknown test subjects without knowing the current manoeuvre.

Abstract:Two experiments addressed the relation between postural stability, perceptual sensitivity, and stability of driving performance. A vehicle was fitted with differential GPS for measuring position and speed, position sensors for measuring brake and accelerator depression, force transducers for measuring door, console and footrest bracing forces, and an accelerometer for measuring the 3D accelerations of the vehicle. In Experiment 1, we investigated whether the initiation of deceleration and the control of braking might be due to sensitivity to the perceptual variable tau, which specifies time-to-contact (TTC), and in particular, whether its first derivative, tau-dot, is used to maintain a constant deceleration profile. Using both untrained experienced drivers (EDs) and trained driving instructors from the Holden Performance Driving Centre (HPDC), results confirmed that, regardless of skill level, tau-dot was maintained at a value close to 0.5 and, as predicted by Lee [Perception 5 (1976) 437], braking was initiated when TTC approximately 5 s. In Experiment 2, we wished to quantify the purported differences in driving behaviour between EDs and HPDC instructors during a variety of everyday manoeuvres. Results indicated that instructors utilised a different cornering trajectory, a different emergency braking strategy, and were able to perform a high-speed swerve and recovery task more effectively than the EDs. In general, the instructors applied greater bracing forces using the door and console compared with EDs. The instructors also applied greater footrest forces during emergency braking than did the EDs. The greater use of bracing by instructor drivers to resist g-forces represents a strategy of active stabilisation that enhances both postural stability, as well as overall stability and consistency of driving performance. Results are discussed with regard to the dynamics of perceptual-motor coordination, and how increased stability might improve sensitivity to relevant perceptual information. We conclude that driver-training programmes that focus on increasing driver stability (as a pre-requisite for increased control) show great promise as a means to improving one's attention during driving, and hence have the potential to dramatically improve road safety in general.
