Abstract:Green roofs are increasingly being used as a source control measure for urban storm water management as they have considerable potential to delay and reduce the storm runoff at source. Simplified infiltration equations (e.g. Horton's, Green Ampt equation) have been widely used in simulation of green roof runoff. However, these equations cannot represent the movement of water in unsaturated soils and result in inaccuracy in the simulation, particularly in the long-term and continuous simulations. In this paper, the hydrological performance of green roofs was simulated based on a HYDRUS-1D model, which can numerically solve the Richards infiltration equation for one-dimensional saturated-unsaturated water flow. The HYDRUS-1D model was calibrated and then applied to evaluate the effects of green roof designs on runoff control under different rainfall conditions. The effects are measured by the rainfall retention amount during a storm event compared to the conventional roof design. A range of storm events with different rainfall amounts, durations and intervals are considered for holistic assessment of green roof. The results obtained indicate that a green roof has varied rainfall retention effects under different rainfall conditions: the ratio of rainfall retention to rainfall amount decreases significantly as the rainfall amount increases; rainwater retention effect of a green roof has little change as the rainfall duration increases; and a green roof can perform better in two continuous storms with interval greater than 48h in this study. The results provide better understanding of the effects of green roofs on runoff control under different rainfall conditions.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This study examined associations between stepfather–stepchild relationship quality, stepfathers’ depressive symptoms, and two aspects of marriage: marital quality and positive marital interactions. Marital quality was assessed in terms of commitment, trust, passionate and friendship-based love, and happiness. Marital interactions were assessed in terms of intimacy, shared activities, and verbal communication. Using data collected from 149 recently married African American stepfathers, structural equation modeling revealed that when stepfathers reported more positive relationships with their stepchildren, they also reported more positive marital quality and a higher frequency of positive marital interactions (relationship-solidifying activities), and that, in turn, was associated with stepfathers experiencing fewer depressive symptoms.

Abstract:In this paper, the tracking of a slowly varying scalar Wiener process based on quantized noisy measurements is studied. An adaptive algorithm using a quantizer with adjustable input gain and bias is presented as a low complexity solution. The mean and asymptotic mean squared error of the algorithm are derived. Simulations under Cauchy and Gaussian noise are presented to validate the results and a comparison with the optimal estimator in the Gaussian and real-valued measurement case shows that the loss of performance due to quantization is negligible using 4 or 5 bits of resolution.
Evaluating the stormwater reduction of a green roof under different rainfall events and antecedent water contents with a modified hydrological model

Abstract:This study simplifies the recession process, includes the hourly evapotranspiration, and modifies the surface layer of the green-roof hydrological model based on the Green-Ampt (G-A) method and Curve Number (CN) method. The existing G-A and CN methods are usually applied for event-total runoff. The results show that the proposed model improves the predicting accuracy of the outflow, and the model performs well for rainfall events with different intensities, duration, and hyetograph. the CN method performs as prominent as the G-A method but is more efficient. Based on observation, the retained volume and peak reduction are close to 50 % on average with a 1-to-2-hour peak delay. The results of the three-year simulation show that the retained volume and peak reduction reach 50 % for 75 % of the events when the antecedent water content is 30 %. Almost all rainfall is retained for events with rainfall amounts smaller than 20 mm when the antecedent water content is smaller than 30 %. On the other hand, 50 % (60 %) rainfall (peak) is retained (reduced) for events larger than 20 mm when the antecedent water content is smaller than 20 %. With the model verified using various rainfall events, the study generalizes an equation to estimate the rainwater retained by green roofs. Moreover, the stormwater-detention performance of a green roof in general is concluded quantitatively under different antecedent water content to assist the decision-making of irrigation concerning the goal of stormwater detention.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization displaces green spaces with impermeable surfaces, harming the urban water cycle. Also, urban areas are challenged by climate change with more frequent and intense precipitation events that oppose with drought periods. Combination of these two factors, with the development of urban areas, makes it impossible for the traditional urban drainage systems to manage precipitation-generated surface water, straining the city's pluvial drainage systems. Green Roofs are a biotechnological engineering option that contributes to minimize drainage systems stress, due to their retention and detention capacity. This study tested the hydrological efficiency of an extensive pilot green roof (GR), containing LECA ® (lightweight expanded clay aggregates) on its composition, assessing system's capacity to retain and detain rainwater, runoff coefficient, and downstream drainage system impact. The extensive GR reached a mean peak reduction of 96.8%, with 14 min of peak delay and a runoff delay between 3.70 and 6.21 min (with precipitation simulations of 15 min maximum duration). The water retention percentage ranged between 10.1% (5 min precipitation) and 39.8% (15 min precipitation), corresponding to 108.0 mm/h and 39.56 mm/h, respectively, over the whole period. The experimental work also showed that the LECA-based GR system allows lowest diameters for the drainage system downstream when compared to other roof types, leading to a potential decrease in the costs associated with the drainage network installation.

Abstract:<p>Green roofs have been treated as practical low impact development (LID) strategies to retain stormwater runoff and alleviate the rainfall-induced flooding risks in urban regions. The purpose of this study was to analyze the hydrological effects of the spatial location of green roofs in urbanized catchments. In the built-up region of Beijing, 12 urbanized catchments with various architectural patterns were chosen as the study areas. To distinguish the spatial characteristics of roof surfaces, we defined the effective roof surfaces to distinguish from other types of roofs, which have more convenient or direct hydrological connections to drainage systems. A hydrological model was then used to simulate the stormwater mitigation performance of green roofs for the study catchments, which were assigned to different rainfall conditions. The simulation results confirmed the benefits of implementing green roofs for urban stormwater regulation. However, the spatial variability of green roofs showed inherent influences on the runoff mitigation capacity in urbanized catchments. Greening on effective roof surfaces would provide more effective stormwater regulation benefits, for reductions in both runoff volume and peak flow. In addition, the spatial arrangement characteristics of roof surfaces also influenced the hydrological efficiency of green roofs. The effect of the spatial location of green roofs on runoff mitigation was rainfall-dependent. These findings provide insights into the hydrological role of green roofs, and suggest that proper siting of LID facilities should be a consideration for urban stormwater management in order to fulfill the hydrological efficiency and cost-effectiveness planning target.</p>

Abstract:Green roof rainwater retention, peak runoff reduction, and runoff time delay are considered important hydrological performance indicators for assessing management of urban stormwater. In this study, simulated rainfall experiments were conducted on three green roof models with different water storage layer depths. The numerical model was established using Hydrus-1D program, and the sensitivity of main parameters, the hydrological response of green roofs with a water storage layer, and water storage on the soil surface were analyzed. In addition to the saturated water content of the soil, the depth of the green roof water storage layer is the most sensitive parameter to rainwater retention and initial drainage time. During the simulated rainfall experiment, the 25-mm-deep water storage layer (WSL-25) increased the rainwater retention capacity (RRC) by 46%. For a 20-year return period corresponding to South China region, the RRC of green roofs with WSL-25 increased by 31% compared with that without a water storage layer. The initial drainage time was delayed by 50 min, and the peak drainage rate was reduced by 89%. In this case, a 100-mm soil layer, a 50-mm water storage layer, and a 50 mm maximum surface water storage depth were considered the optimal structural configurations of green roofs. This shows that water storage on the soil surface and bottom water storage layer were equally important for improving RRC, reducing peak drainage and delaying drainage time of green roofs.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization transforms permeable land into developed areas with predominantly impervious surfaces, significantly increasing stormwater runoff and exacerbating the risk of pluvial flooding. Green roofs provide an attractive strategy for increasing surface permeability by mimicking pre-development hydrologic functions and mitigating flood risks in compact cities. However, the potential of this strategy has not been rigorously assessed, despite advances in global stormwater management. This is mainly due to insufficient scientific knowledge of hydrologic performance and a lack of experimental studies of rainwater-harvesting capacity under specific climatic conditions. This study evaluated the hydrologic performance of a real-scale extensive green roof (EGR) constructed in a subtropical monsoon climate in Nanjing, China. Overall, the EGR showed considerable ability to retain rainfall (mean retention ~ 60%, accumulated retention ~ 30%), although retention performance varied from 11% to 100% depending on the rainfall event considered, and decreased with increasing rainfall. Event-based rainfall–runoff comparisons demonstrated that the EGR retained rainwater efficiently during the early stages of a rainfall event and significantly attenuated peak runoff flows compared to bare roofs. Statistical analysis showed that total rainfall depth, rainfall duration, and substrate layer moisture influenced the overall retention most strongly, but also the percentage retention and runoff depth, highlighting the impact of substrate properties in addition to rainfall characteristics on EGR hydrologic performance. These findings provide new knowledge of and important insights into the hydrological performance of green roofs in subtropical monsoon climates, which could be used to guide EGR construction to increase landscape permeability, mitigate the risk of pluvial flooding, and enhance the climatic resilience of urban regions.

Abstract:Nature-based solutions have appeared as relevant solutions to mitigate urban heat islands. To improve our knowledge of the assessment of this ecosystem service and the related physical processes (evapotranspiration), monitoring campaigns are required. This was the objective of several experiments carried out on the Blue Green Wave, a large green roof located in Champs-sur-Marne (France). Three different protocols were implemented and tested to assess the evapotranspiration flux at different scales: the first one was based on the surface energy balance (large scale); the second one was carried out using an evapotranspiration chamber (small scale); and the third one was based on the water balance evaluated during dry periods (point scale). In addition to these evapotranspiration estimates, several hydrometeorological variables (especially temperature) were measured. Related data and Python programs providing preliminary elements of the analysis and graphical representation have been made available. They illustrate the space–time variability in the studied processes regarding their observation scale. The dataset is available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8064053 (Versini et al., 2023).

Abstract:As "the fifth facade" of city,the building roof is an important aspect for the cubist urban afforesting and greening.The rainwater retention and storage capacity of vegetation and soil layer on green roofs,to some extent,can reduce the urban stormwater runoff,delay the runoff generation,and improve the microclimate condition as well.In this study,an artificial raining experiment was carried out on green roof to analyze its rainwater storage capacity by measuring the rainfall and runoff.Then,a HYDRUS-1D model was established based on the greened roof structure.After model calibration and validation,it was used to simulate and analyze the influences of some key factors,including the rainfall,soil depth and soil characteristics.According to the experimental and calculated results,the green roof has good rainwater retention and storage capacity.For the green roofs with 10cm soil layer in this study,it varies from 16.1mm to 21.6mm according to different rainfall frequency.The capacity has an increase trend with the increase of soil depth.For the water storage effectiveness,loam is more suitable for roof greening than sandy soil and silt clay.These results can supply helpful information for the widespread implementation of green roofs in urban area.

Abstract:Green infrastructure has potential to alleviate the environmental impact of rapidly growing cities. This potential has inspired laws in Toronto that require the inclusion of rooftops with large vegetation beds, called green roofs, into sufficiently sized construction projects. We study the problem of reusing stormwater to irrigate a green roof in Toronto, where potable water is the current irrigation source. The vision is that widespread reuse of stormwater runoff for irrigation of green roofs and other purposes can reduce sewer overflow volumes without over-building (with the added benefit of conserving potable water). Towards this vision, our goal is to develop and evaluate two pump controllers for transporting stormwater to the green roof of interest in simulation. A key contribution is our development of a site-specific non-linear model for stormwater flow using smoothing techniques that permits linearization and a standard model predictive controller (MPC). We compare the efficacy of the MPC, which anticipates the weather, and an on/off controller, which is reactive rather than anticipative, for the site in simulation. With further study, we are hopeful that this research will advance control systems technology to improve the performance of green and stormwater infrastructure in growing urban areas.

Abstract:Urban flooding is increasing due to climate change and the expansion of impervious land surfaces. Green roofs have recently been identified as effective solutions for mitigating urban stormwater. However, discharge routes that involve receiving catchments of stormwater runoff from roofs to mitigate high flows have been limited. Thus, a hydrological model was constructed to investigate the effects of changing discharge routes on stormwater flow. Three hypothetical scenarios were assessed using various combinations of discharge routes and roof types. The reduction effects on outflow and overflow were identified and evaluated across six return periods of designed rainstorms in the Tai Hung Tulip House community in Beijing. The results showed that green roofs, together with the discharge routes connecting to pervious catchments, were effective in reducing peak flow (13.9%–17.3%), outflow volume (16.3%–27.3%), drainage overflow frequency, and flood duration. Although mitigation can be improved by considering discharge routes, it is limited compared to that achieved by the effects of green roofs. However, integrating green roofs and discharge routes can improve community resilience to rainstorms with longer return periods. These results provide useful information for effective design of future stormwater mitigation and management strategies in small-scale urban areas.

Abstract:A model is presented for the gravity-driven flow of rainwater descending through the soil layer of a green roof, treated as a porous medium on a flat permeable surface representing an efficient drainage layer. A fully saturated zone is shown to occur. It is typically a thin layer, relative to the total soil thickness, and lies at the bottom of the soil layer. This provides a bottom boundary condition for the partially saturated upper zone. It is shown that after the onset of rainfall, well-defined fronts of water can descend through the soil layer. Also the rainwater flow is relatively quick compared with the moisture uptake by the roots of the plants in the roof. In separate models the exchanges of water are described between the (smaller-scale) porous granules of soil, the roots and the rainwater in the inter-granule pores.

Abstract:Reduction in runoff and increase in actual evapotranspiration (AET) are two well-known benefits of green roofs. However, few studies have been carried out to investigate how green roofs affect runoff and AET when there is interaction between them. Such interaction is most prominent when green roofs have an additional storage layer. In this study, a modified hydrological model for green roofs is proposed to explicitly describe water retention and release in different layers and during wet/dry periods, which can reflect the interaction between runoff and AET under alternating dry and wet conditions. After calibration and validation with experimental data, the model was used to evaluate the combined effects of runoff reduction and increase in AET for green roofs under moist sub-tropical weather condition (such as Shenzhen, China). The results indicate that the daily AET and event runoff of green roofs decrease with increasing antecedent dry period (ADP); an additional storage layer can increase the ability of green roofs in reducing runoff and increasing AET. Generally, the effect is more pronounce under weather conditions with higher temperature, more rainfall amount and longer ADP. Such results provide hydrologists and engineers with a new and effective tool to simulate and understand the performance of green roofs by considering water retention and release in the layers.
Assessment of the long-term hydrological performance of a green roof system in stormwater control

Abstract:Green roof systems (GRs) are effective tools for urban stormwater management. However, there is limited documentation of the long-term hydrological performance of GRs to support decision-making. This study evaluated long-term field monitoring records (7 years) from a 12-year-old GR, situated in a Moist Subtropical Mid-Latitude Climate, to analyze seasonality in and evolution of hydrological performance. The monitoring system was built within a pan lysimeter buried under substrate layers matching the surrounding GR. The monitoring results highlight the efficacy of this GR in long-term stormwater runoff control. The GR can retain 87% of the annual precipitation and return 54% of the precipitation to the atmosphere through evapotranspiration (ET) and sustain long-term event-based mean runoff volume reductions, peak flow reductions, and flow delays of 82%, 93%, and 4.3 h, respectively. The initial moisture content prior to events was highly correlated with hydrological performance, with a seasonal mean Spearman correlation coefficient of 0.47, suggesting the potential of enhancing ET from the GR to improve performance. Substrate water holding capacity increased over time, but no obvious changes in water retention performance were observed. These monitoring results from the aging GR demonstrate the effectiveness of GR systems for long-term stormwater management.

Abstract:Shallow urban groundwater interacts with surface water and underground infrastructures. Low-impact development in urban water management by at-source infiltration should consider shallow urban groundwater in a holistic manner. Traditional hydrological models, however, rarely detail groundwater flows and their interaction with urban runoff and the water budget. In the present study, a new approach is proposed, using the integration of a flow module WTI for the saturated zone in a distributed urban hydrological model URBS-MO. This integration is carried out by paying attention to retaining the initial waterflow subsurface parameterization. The performance of the integrated model is evaluated by piezometric and runoff data in an experimental urban catchment, through a sensitivity analysis and a manual calibration of the main model parameters, as well as a validation step. The new module shows its capacity to improve groundwater flow simulation by assessing more realistic water table variations, along with a very small improvement of flowrate simulation. The bias on the average groundwater level was reduced from +14 to +7% for the one-year validation period. The modelling results show the importance of parameter calibration for distributed physically-based hydrological models. Difficulties in the calibration of parameter values due to spatial heterogeneities are also revealed, as the use of piezometric data for the calibration of a hydrological model is rather innovative.

Abstract:In this study, the Princeton ROof Model (PROM) is developed, validated and used to simulate the hygrothermal dynamics of green roof systems. PROM is embedded within the framework of the Princeton Urban Canopy Model, with a multi-layer spatially-analytical heat transfer scheme and an improved hydrological module. The model is validated by comparing simulated surface temperature and soil moisture to the measurements at two experimental sites, one in Beijing, China and the other in New Jersey, USA. The results demonstrate that PROM is able to capture the diurnal cycle of roof temperatures and the soil moisture dynamics of green roofs with high accuracy. Driven by a 30-day summertime meteorological forcing from July 2001, PROM is used to investigate the green roof thermal improvement to the urban indoor and outdoor environments, compared to conventional roofs. The impact of green roofs is significant in reducing surface temperatures, and outdoor and indoor heat fluxes during this summer period. To quantify this thermal improvement, three indices related to surface temperature, outdoor heat flux and indoor heat flux, are introduced; and the dependence of these indices on hydrological and meteorological conditions is investigated. The results indicate that incoming solar radiation and medium layer moisture are the main determinants of the green roof performance.

Abstract:Nature-based solutions (NBSs) and urban greening are well-established strategies used in various planning and policy instruments to promote the sustainability of cities and mitigate the effects of climate changes. Within this context, green roofs are emerging as an effective NBS in urban areas where space is often limited. The estimation of green roof benefits is essential for their effective implementation and engineering design. In this contribution, we present a daily time-step model to estimate the surface temperature, vegetation cover growth and the hydrological behaviour of a green roof. The model is tested using twenty time series of real and independent European green roofs. Results show that, in the absence of calibration, the model can reproduce daily surface temperature with high accuracy. The vegetation growing period is also reproduced well. The hydrological variables can be estimated with moderate accuracy, and higher accuracy can be achieved when the model is calibrated. Abstract:Green roofs (GRs), as compared to conventional roofs, can retain a considerable amount of water in the soil layer and hence have been used in many urban areas to mitigate urban flooding. However, a simple yet physical model for describing the rainfall (P)-runoff (R) relationship over GRs is still lacking. In this study, a physically-based P–R relationship, which utilizes soil moisture measurements that are often available in field experiments, is proposed based on the water balance equation over flat and horizontally homogenous GRs and evaluated against field measurements. First, the two different runoff generation mechanisms on GRs, namely, saturation-excess (runoff is generated when the soil becomes saturated) and infiltration-excess (runoff is generated when the rainfall intensity is larger than the infiltration rate), are discussed. A water balance analysis is then performed to obtain a physically-based P–R relationship over flat and horizontally homogenous GRs, which is validated using measurements from a field experiment conducted over a GR site in Beijing, China. Results show that our P–R relationship is able to estimate the runoff generated on our GR site. The proposed P–R relationship is also tested against other observational data and empirical models in the literature and shows broad consistency with these previous studies. To further quantify the relative importance of saturation-excess runoff and infiltration-excess runoff, numerical simulations are carried out using HYDRUS-1D. The simulation results indicate that runoff at our GR site is generated by both saturation-excess and infiltration-excess. Nonetheless, the infiltration-excess runoff accounts for a small portion of the total runoff, which suggests that the saturation-excess mechanism is more important for generating runoff over GRs.
