Abstract:The resonance radiation trapping in alkaline-earth metal atomic lasers were investigated according to Holstein's theory. The threshold temperature, ground-state density and resonant level effective lifetime of the resonance radiation trapping were calculated for Ca, Sr, and Ba atomic vapor lasers with different tube radii. The calculated threshold temperature is found to be in good agreement with the experimental laser-starting temperature, which indicates the resonance radiation trapping is a significant factor in establishing the population inversion of the resonance to metastable transition lasers.

Abstract:An effective and novel design strategy for ultrafast laser-initiating materials has been established on the basis of coordination chemistry for the first time in the present work. In view of the positive effect of Ag ion and perchlorate on laser sensitivity, silver perchlorate as a representative of oxidizing inorganic metal salts was used to construct energetic cationic coordination polymers (ECCPs), which solved the inconvenient situation caused by the difficulty in applying these salts directly in energetic materials because of the unavoidable hygroscopicity and the inhomogeneity of physical mixtures of oxidants and reductants. With the nonenergetic nitrogen-rich ligand 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-carbohydrazide (ATCA), one new laser-sensitive Ag(I)-based ECCP [Ag(ATCA)ClO4]n (1) was successfully synthesized with a compact helical structure proved by X-ray single-diffraction crystal data. The physicochemical property evaluation revealed that this Ag-ECCP was not only completely devoid of the undesirable properties of the silver perchlorate and displayed excellent tolerance to moisture and noncorrosive properties to metal shells, but was also endowed with good thermal stability and excellent safety for mechanical stimulation. Moreover, theoretical calculations based on the standard molar enthalpy of formation and the lead plate explosive test as the actual damage experiment have proved that the compound has a superior detonation performance (up to 6800 m s-1 and 0.511 kcal g-1) compared to the traditional primary explosives. More importantly, the laser-initiation-experiment-based femtosecond laser-testing system and high-speed photography demonstrated that this ECCP was an energetic material with great potential for application in the safety detonator as an ultrafast photosensitive initiating material for laser direct initiation, whose initiation delay time is as low as 73 ms using only 200 mJ initiation energy.

Abstract:By time-resolved measurement of charge in ablation target and collector the emission characters of electron and ion produced by pulsed Nd:YAG laser ablation of metal Al and its change with ablation gas pressure were investigated. The results show that when the metal is ablated by laser electron and ion are formed in ablation target and electron is emitted first. With a rise in pressure, the charge in ablation target and collector produced by laser ablation is decreased rapidly.

Abstract:Energetic metal-organic complexes have been involved in nanothermites as novel oxidants. However, the existing preparation methods often lead to mixing inhomogeneity and small contact area of ingredients, the reactivity and functionality of the novel energetic nanocomposites are still limited. In this work, spray crystallization (SC) method was used to prepare novel energetic nanocomposites, the high-energy metal-organic complex [Ni(CHZ)3](ClO4)2 (CHZ = 1,3-diaminourea) was composited with nano-aluminum (n-Al). Results showed that n-Al/[Ni(CHZ)3](ClO4)2 energetic nanocomposites prepared by SC method increased heat release to 2977.6 J/g and peak pressure to 3.91 MPa with higher pressurization rate (1324.06 MPa/s), decreased sensitivity thresholds (>100 mJ) to electrostatic discharge (ESD) and enhanced detonation ability compared with [Ni(CHZ)3](ClO4)2 alone and physically mixed (PM) n-Al/[Ni(CHZ)3](ClO4)2. These results proved that it is significant to introduce energetic metal-organic complexes with inherent high energy in new-concept n-Al/energetic metal-organic complexes nanocomposites through SC method for a better performance of its application.

Abstract:Laser ignition technology has garnered significant attention for energetic materials in recent years, offering advantages over traditional electrical initiation methods, notably in mitigating issues related to stray currents and electromagnetic interference. Moreover, it can facilitate multi-point synchronous ignition. However, the persistent challenges of high ignition thresholds and delays in energetic materials necessitate effective resolutions. In this study, we address these challenges by converting the inert Al 2 O 3 layer on the surface of aluminum powder into the active compound Aluminum Iodate Hexahydrate ([Al(H 2 O) 6 ](IO 3 ) 3 (HIO 3 ) 2 , AIH) to prepare an Al@AIH@PVDF energetic composite film (ECF) with the aim of reducing the laser ignition threshold and delay of Al@PVDF ECF. The Al@AIH@PVDF ECF was synthesized through a simple wet chemistry method and a rapid evaporation process suing a simple, environmental-friendly, and cost-effective way. Differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetric analysis (DSC-TG) results demonstrate a lower exothermic reaction temperature (161 °C) and higher heat release (2900 J g −1 ) for Al@AIH@PVDF ECF. Laser ignition tests reveal a reduced laser ignition delay (11 ms) and threshold (1.59 J cm −2 ) for Al@AIH@PVDF ECF. Combustion experiments showcase elevated combustion flame temperature (3090 K), burning rate (4.11 cm s −1 ), and smaller condensed combustion products, while effectively igniting CL-20. Pressure tests indicate higher maximum combustion pressure (3.24 MPa) and pressure rise rate (4.05 GPa s −1 ) for Al@AIH@PVDF ECF. Finally, the reaction process and mechanism of Al@AIH@PVDF ECF was also investigated and proposed.

Abstract:A sensitized laser ignition strategy is developed by Yu Dai, Zhi jian Yang, and co‐workers, article number 2201392. This low energy input induced ignition is achieved by self‐assembled Cu1.8S microsuperlattcies on the surface of energetic materials. Due to synergy of catalysis and enhanced photothermia derived from plasmonic coupling of Cu1.8S building blocks, AP can be ignited at energy density of 186.67 mJ cm–2 with delay of 5 ms.

Abstract:Laser ignition has been widely studied, and is regarded as a potential initiation technique in pyrotechnics owing to its simple ignition sequence, good safety, high ignition consistency, and strong anti-electromagnetic interference ability. One of the most important requirements for the practical application of laser ignition is the reduction of ignition energy, which requires both good light absorption and good photothermal properties of energetic materials or additives in energetic materials. Therefore, in this review, the recent progress of different photothermal materials and their laser-induced performances have been summarized. First, an overview of optical ignition, especially laser ignition, including the main categories, mechanisms, advantages, and applications, was introduced. Then, different photothermal materials, including carbon-based materials, composite materials, explosives, and gaseous mixtures, were summarized, and their photothermal performances were listed and compared. Finally, the strategies and challenges of designing photothermal materials with optimized performance were discussed, which can provide suggestions for the choice of photothermal energetic materials and can provide primary guidance for the design and fabrication of the same for laser ignition applications.In this review, we focus on typical photothermal materials, such as metallic oxides and metal nanoparticles, carbon nanoparticles, composite nanomaterials, explosives, and gaseous fluid, which can absorb and utilize light efficiently; the aim of this review was to demonstrate the advantages of utilizing these unique materials, especially energetic materials for laser ignition, and provide primary guidance for the design and fabrication of photothermal energetic materials for laser ignition applications.Download : Download high-res image (280KB)Download : Download full-size image
Constructing hotspots through star-shaped gold-copper alloy nanocrystals for laser initiation of explosives

Abstract:Laser initiation technology is an effective way to detonate high energy materials safely and reliably, which has broad application prospect in military blasting. However, there are many obstacles in high-power laser propagating through optical fiber, which directly affect the initiation of high-energy explosives under low-power conditions. Photosensitizer is a necessary substance for initiating low energy and low sensitivity explosives. Herein we developed gold-copper alloys nanocrystals as free-standing laser energy converter material to reduce the laser initiation threshold and delay time. By controlling the nanocrystals morphology, more hotspots were created in the nanocrystals and the ultraviolet–visible-near infrared (UV–VIS-NIR) absorption peak of nanocrystals was regulated to around 808 nm. The laser irradiation result showed that the temperature of the gold-copper alloys nanocrystals was close to 280 ℃ within 10 s (808 nm, 1 W·cm−2). In the practical applications, the cyclotrimethy lenetrinitramine (RDX) initiation threshold can be reduced by 83.47% and B/KNO3 delay time by 43.95% by using gold-copper alloy nanocrystals as laser energy absorber. This result indicates that the gold-copper alloy as an independent laser absorbing material can effectively initiate low-sensitive explosives under low-power conditions.

Abstract:Donoracceptor π‐conjugated energetic catalysts, denoted as D‐n, are developed, and nonmetallic hybrid energetic composites are prepared by assembling the as‐synthesized catalysts into multiscale ammonium perchlorate (AP), which can be ignited without the involvement of metals. At the voltage of 1 kV, the laser‐ignition delay time of D‐2/AP decreases from 56 to 35 ms because D‐2 exhibits organic semiconductor‐like properties. Photosensitive materials, such as energetic complexes, usually have high sensitivity and cause heavy‐metal pollution, whereas others, like carbon black and dye, do not contain energy, which affects energy output and mechanical properties. In this work, donor–acceptor π‐conjugated energetic catalysts, denoted as D‐n, are designed and synthesized. Nonmetallic hybrid energetic composites are prepared by assembling the as‐synthesized catalysts into multiscale ammonium perchlorate (AP). Composites containing catalysts and APs can be successfully ignited without the involvement of metals. The new ignition mechanism is further analyzed using experimental and theoretical analyses such as UV–vis‐near‐infrared (NIR) spectra, electron‐spin resonance spectroscopy, and energy‐gap analysis. The shortest ignition delay time is 56 ms under the experimental condition of a NIR wavelength of 1064 nm and a laser power of 10 W. At the voltage of 1 kV and the electric field of 500 V mm−1, the laser‐ignition delay time of D‐2/AP hybrid composite decreases from 56 to 35 ms because D‐2 also exhibits organic semiconductor‐like properties. D‐2/AP and D‐12/AP can also be used to successfully laser ignite other common energetic materials. This study can guide the development of advanced metal‐free laser‐ignitable energetic composites to address challenges in the field of aerospace engineering.

Abstract:The silver acetylene silver nitrate loading technology of the light initiated high explosive, as one of important means to simulate the structural response of powerful pulsed X-ray, adopts the pulse laser initiation. It has advantages of improvement of practical control, heterogenous loading realization and simultaneous loading timeliness. In this paper, the physical and mathematical models of hot spot initiation and photochemical initiation of energetic materials under the action of laser are firstly established, and then the laser initiation mechanism of the light initiated high explosive is specifically analyzed, and the laser initiation experiment is conducted based on the optical adsorption property of the light initiated high explosive. From this study, the laser initiation thresholds of 193 nm, 266 nm, 532 nm, 1064 nm wavelengths are given, and they are 5.07 mJ/mm2, 6.77 mJ/mm2, 7.21 mJ/mm2 and 10.61 mJ/mm2, respectively, and the complete detonation process is verified by detonation velocity. This work technically supports the study of pulse laser initiation process, mechanism and explosion loading rule as well as the loading technology of the light initiated high explosive to simulate the structural response of X ray.

Formation of Hypermetallic Molecule LiZnO+ from Laser Plasma

Abstract:By 355 nm laser ablating a composite target prepared from metallic lithium and ZnO in high vaccum, a new hypermetallic oxide LiZnO+ ion, which consists of two heterometal atoms and oxygen atom, was observed by using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer for the first time, The time-of-flight positive ion mass spectra at different delay time between the accelerated electric field and laser pulse are investigated. It shows that the formation of LiOZn+ depends on the delay time, and the hypervalent ion LiOZn+ is observed obviously at the delay time from 7.5 to 17.5 mus. These results suggest that the ion-molecular reaction between the ablated Lif ions and ZnO in the laser plasma should be responsible for the formation of hypermetallic LiZnO+.

Abstract:We report the first laser emission from flash ignition of Zr/Al nanoparticles with the addition of strong oxidizer KClO4 using Nd: YAG as a laser medium. The mixture Zr/Al/Kp-45 (mass ratio = 33%Zr: 33%Al: 34%KClO4) has the highest brightness temperature Tb = 4615 K and the adiabatic flame temperature Tf = 4194 K with the duration of 20 ms. At 1064 nm we measured a maximum output energy of 702.5 mJ with the duration of nearly 10 ms by using only 100 mg mixture with an output coupler (transmission T = 10%). Further optimizing the concentration cavity and increasing the mixture content will yield much higher efficiency and output energy.

Abstract:Interactions between energetic materials and laser beams of specific frequency are of both scientific and engineering importance for understanding and manipulating the laser-induced ignition of energetic crystals. In this work, we investigate the effects of laser irradiation of variable energy densities from ultraviolet (355 nm) to near-infrared (1064 nm) on the ignition properties of a well-treated cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) crystal slice (9.3 mm x 9.1 mm x 2.9 mm). The laser-induced damage and initiation dynamics were characterized in detail by using optical microscopy as well as an ultrafast pump-probe imaging technique at nanoseconds. It discloses that both ignition probabilities (p) of 355 and 1064 nm change exponentially with increasing laser fluence (H, J/cm(2)): p(355) =1 - e(-1.72)*((H-3.981)), p(1064) = 1 - e(-0.74)*((H-7.898)). RDX crystals can be more easily ignited under ultraviolet laser irradiation than by near infrared one due to its different absorptions (alpha(355)= 1.6306 cm(-1), and alpha(1064)= 0.5313 cm(-1)) and the effects of photochemical initiation mechanism. The damage induced by either 355 nm or 1064 nm laser exhibits three typical morphologies varied with laser exposure. In addition, damage generated by ultraviolet laser appears on the incident surface of the crystal slice, while it is mainly located on the exit surface when being ignited by near-infrared laser. Our work sheds light on the dedicated interaction mechanism between energetic crystals and laser beams of various frequency and energy density. (C) 2017 The Combustion Institute. Abstract:A fundamental theoretical investigation of laser ignition is reported. Ignition is happened in an explosion bomb which equipped with visualization windows and all aspects of the phenomenon such as plasmas, shock waves, ignition kernels, and propagating flames are observed by high-speed schlieren photography. Abstract:Optical and thermal ignition are two common pathways to initiate the explosion of primary explosives, where laser ignition is a more reliable and safer initiation method. Caused by the current-applied laser igniter with the wavelength of 1064 or 915 nm, the energetic complexes with strong absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) region are possibly applied as laser-ignited explosives. Recently, [Cu(NO3)2(1-AT)3] complex has been synthesized with excellent NIR absorption properties, where 1-amino-5H-tetrazole (1-AT) has been proved to be a promising laser-ignited energetic ligand. To confirm the structure-thermal/optical explosive characteristics, based on the structure of synthesized [Cu(NO3)2(1-AT)3], the commonly used transition-metal cations (M2+ = Cr2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+) have been selected to construct the series of complexes of M(NO3)2(1-AT)x (x = 2 or 3) theoretically. Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) method has been applied to unveil the role of center metals in the initiation and growth pathways. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) method is used to explore their charge-transfer (CT) characteristics. The optical characteristic of the metal complex is mainly determined by the behaviors of the 3d electrons of center metals in excitation, where the activity of β-d electrons is an important factor to affect the NIR characteristic of complexes.
Constructing interparticle hotspots through cracking silver nanoplates for laser initiation of explosives

Abstract:As a safe, reliable, and strongly electromagnetic resistant initiation method, laser initiation shows great promise in military blasting applications. Many obstacles exist when delivering a high-energy laser through optical fibers, directly influencing the energetic explosives under low-initiation conditions. Herein, we developed silver nanoplates as a laser energy absorber to reduce the laser initiation threshold and delay time. During the growth process of the silver seed nanoplates, mechanical disturbance was applied to provoke the nanoplates to develop more internal hotspots. Meanwhile, in ultraviolet visible near-infrared (UV–VIS-NIR) testing, the absorption peak was regulated to 808 nm by tailoring the size of the nanoplates. Results showed that the maximum temperature of the cracking nanoplates could reach 100 °C within 10 s, under the irradiation of an 808 nm diode laser at a power density of 1 W·cm−2. Through their use as a laser energy absorber, the silver nanoplates can effectively reduce the initiation threshold of cyclotrimethy lenetrinitramine (RDX) by 58.33% and reduce the delay time of B/KNO3 by 51.00%. This result provides potential applications for initiation energetic explosives at low laser energy.

Abstract:In recent years, development of new energetic compounds and formulations, suitable for ignition with relatively low-power lasers, is a highly active and competitive field of research. The main goal of these efforts is focused on achieving and providing much safer solutions for various detonator and initiator systems. In this work, we prepared, characterized, and studied thermal and ignition properties of a new laser-ignitable compound, based on the 5,6-bis(ethylnitroamino)-N'2,N'3-dihydroxypyrazine-2,3-bis(carboximidamide) (DS3) proligand. This new energetic proligand was prepared in three steps, starting with 5,6-bis(ethylamino)-pyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitrile. Crystallography studies of the DS3-derived Cu(II) complex (DS4) revealed a unique stacked antenna-type structure of the latter compound. DS4 has an exothermal temperature of 154.5 °C and was calculated to exhibit a velocity of detonation of 6.36 km·s-1 and a detonation pressure of 15.21 GPa. DS4 showed properties of a secondary explosive, having sensitivity to impact, friction, and electrostatic discharge of 8 J, 360 N, and 12 mJ, respectively. In order to study the mechanism of ignition by a laser (using a diode laser, 915 nm), we conducted a set of experiments that enabled us to characterize a photothermal ignition mechanism. Furthermore, we found that a single pulse, with a time duration of 1 ms and with a total energy of 4.6 mJ, was sufficient for achieving a consistent and full ignition of DS4. Dual-pulse experiments, with variable time intervals between the laser pulses, showed that DS4 undergoes ignition via a photothermal mechanism. Finally, calculating the chemical mechanism of the formation of the complex DS4 and modeling its anhydrous and hydrated crystal structures (density functional theory calculations using Gaussian and HASEM software) allowed us to pinpoint a more precise location of water molecules in experimental crystallographic data. These results suggest that DS4 has potential for further development to a higher technology readiness level and for integration into small-size safe detonator systems as for many civil, aerospace, and defense applications.

Abstract:Laser or flash excitation is an attractive ignition option for many energetic systems because of increased safety and control. Commonly used electrical ignition systems are more likely to cause accidental ignition due to stray currents. Upgrading to laser or flash ignition mitigates this problem as well as allowing the ignition at multiple sites more easily for improved control of the energy release. Carbon nanotubes and nanoscale aluminum have been shown to be flash ignitable in loose powders or very porous low-density materials; however, these previous low-density formulations may not be as useful in practical energetic systems. In this study, nano aluminum particles are combined with a polyvinylidene fluoride binder/oxidizer in order to create a full-density photosensitive material. Using a low energy broadband flash source and an Nd:YAG laser at 1064 and 532 nm, films of nano aluminum and polyvinylidene fluoride were successfully ignited experimentally and ignition response was quantified. Solids loading was found to be the dominating factor controlling minimum ignition energies, with the lowest energies observed at 20 to 25 wt.% nAl. Simulations of the wave and particle interactions were modeled with COMSOL Multiphysics® for both the flash and laser-induced heating. The results show that optimal energy absorption occurs at nAl particle fractions of 20–25 wt.%, consistent with the experimental observation. Additionally, the results show the effect of plasmonic resonant enhancement of the heating, specifically at lower wavelengths near 250 nm.

Abstract:Al/PTFE reactive material has potential applications in defense and military due to its good thermodynamic properties and strong stability. To clarify its microscopic reaction process, the initial response and combustion behavior from microsecond up to several milliseconds are fully exhibited via laser-induced plasma spectroscopy and high-speed schlieren photographs while varying the ignition energy. Totally different plasma chemistry and combustion behavior of microscale Al/PTFE (mole ratio of 4:3) from those of pure Al are recorded. The fading of AlO and CN emissions and enhancement of C 2 emission from the composite plasma with increase of laser energy prove that Al-F exothermic combination dominate the initial response since the decomposed gases of PTFE keep most Al away from air to be oxidized. The acceleration of laser-induced shockwave by a local high temperature reaction zone at the expanding plume front along the direction of laser beam is illustrated. As the plasma quenched and transformed to combustion at later stage, an ellipsoidal flame generally occurs above the surface for PTFE composite due to the upward move of Al vapor with PTFE decomposition gas while the combustion from pure Al exhibits a horizontal expansion along the surface. Self-sustained combustion of micro-Al/PTFE lasts around 1 ms is observed at extreme high energy of 1100 mJ. Inside flame plume, the transmission of decomposition matter and energy between different flame parts are clarified. Finally, a qualitative reaction model is built to successfully describe the response and combustion behavior after nanosecond laser ignition in detail. This study provides the support for the application of these insensitive reactive materials in laser ignition.
