Abstract:The two-dimensional superconductor formed at the interface between the complex oxides, lanthanum aluminate (LAO) and strontium titanate (STO) has several intriguing properties that set it apart from conventional superconductors. Most notably, an electric field can be used to tune its critical temperature (T$_c$), revealing a dome-shaped phase diagram reminiscent of high T$_c$ superconductors. So far, experiments with oxide interfaces have measured quantities which probe only the magnitude of the superconducting order parameter and are not sensitive to its phase. Here, we perform phase-sensitive measurements by realizing the first superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) at the LAO/STO interface. Furthermore, we develop a new paradigm for the creation of superconducting circuit elements, where local gates enable in-situ creation and control of Josephson junctions. These gate-defined SQUIDs are unique in that the entire device is made from a single superconductor with purely electrostatic interfaces between the superconducting reservoir and the weak link. We complement our experiments with numerical simulations and show that the low superfluid density of this interfacial superconductor results in a large, gate-controllable kinetic inductance of the SQUID. Our observation of robust quantum interference opens up a new pathway to understand the nature of superconductivity at oxide interfaces.

Abstract:We report on an extraordinary field effect of the superconducting LaAlO3/KTaO3(111) interface with Tc ~2 K. By applying a gate voltage (VG) across KTaO3, the interface can be continuously tuned from superconducting into insulating states, yielding a dome-shaped Tc-VG dependence. The electric gating has only a minor effect on carrier density as evidenced in the Hall-effect measurement, while it changes spatial profile of the carriers in the interface, hence the carrier's disorder level significantly. As temperature is decreased, the resistance saturates at lowest temperature in both superconducting and insulating sides, despite an initial dramatic dropping or increasing, which suggests an emergence of quantum metallic state associated with failed superconductor and/or fragile insulator. A VG-modulation of the magnetic-field-driven superconductor to insulator quantum phase transition reveals a non-universal criticality.

Abstract:Quantum ground states which arise at atomically controlled oxide interfaces provide an opportunity to address key questions in condensed matter physics, including the nature of two-dimensional (2D) metallic behaviour often observed adjacent to superconductivity. At the superconducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface, a metallic ground state emerges upon the collapse of superconductivity with field-effect gating. Strikingly, such metallicity is accompanied with a pseudogap. Here, we utilize independent control of carrier density and disorder of the interfacial superconductor using dual electrostatic gates, which enables the comprehensive examination of the electronic phase diagram approaching zero temperature. We find that the pseudogap corresponds to precursor pairing, and the onset of long-range phase coherence forms a 2D superconducting dome as a function of the dual gate voltages. The gate-tuned superconductor-metal transitions are driven by macroscopic phase fluctuations of Josephson coupled superconducting puddles.

Abstract: The emergent superconductivity at the LaAlO3/KTaO3 interfaces exhibits a mysterious dependence on the KTaO3 crystallographic orientations. Here we show, by soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, that the interfacial superconductivity is contributed by mobile electrons with unexpected quasi-three-dimensional character, beyond the "two-dimensional electron gas" scenario in describing oxide interfaces. At differently-oriented interfaces, the quasi-three-dimensional electron gas ubiquitously exists and spatially overlaps with the small q Fuchs-Kliewer surface phonons. Intriguingly, electrons and the Fuchs-Kliewer phonons couple with different strengths depending on the interfacial orientations, and the stronger coupling correlates with the higher superconducting transition temperature. Our results provide a natural explanation for the orientation-dependent superconductivity, and the first evidence that interfacial orientations can affect electron-phonon coupling strength over several nanometers, which may have profound implications for the applications of oxide interfaces in general.

Abstract:The ability to control materials properties through interface engineering is demonstrated by the appearance of conductivity at the interface of certain insulators, most famously the {001} interface of the band insulators LaAlO3 and TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 (STO; refs 1, 2). Transport and other measurements in this system show a plethora of diverse physical phenomena. To better understand the interface conductivity, we used scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy to image the magnetic field locally generated by current in an interface. At low temperature, we found that the current flowed in conductive narrow paths oriented along the crystallographic axes, embedded in a less conductive background. The configuration of these paths changed on thermal cycling above the STO cubic-to-tetragonal structural transition temperature, implying that the local conductivity is strongly modified by the STO tetragonal domain structure. The interplay between substrate domains and the interface provides an additional mechanism for understanding and controlling the behaviour of heterostructures.

Abstract:The oxide interface between LaAlO3 and KTaO3(111) can harbor a superconducting state. We report that by applying a gate voltage (V-G) across KTaO3, the interface can be continuously tuned from superconducting into insulating states, yielding a dome-shaped T-c-V-G dependence, where T-c is the transition temperature. Abstract:The discovery of two-dimensional superconductivity in LaAlO3/KTaO3 (111) and (110) interfaces has raised significant interest in this system. In this manuscript we report the first successful fabrication of a superconducting quantum interference device (DC-SQUID) in the KTO system. The key device elements, superconducting weak links, are created by conductive atomic force microscope (c-AFM) lithography which can reversibly control the conductivity at the LAO/KTO(110) interface with nanoscale resolution. The periodic modulation of the SQUID critical current, Ic(B), with magnetic field corresponds well with our theoretical modeling, which reveals a large kinetic inductance of the superconducting two-dimensional electron gas in KTO. The kinetic inductance of the SQUID is tunable by electrical gating from the back, due to the large dielectric constant of KTO. The demonstration of weak links and SQUIDs in KTO broadens the scope for exploring the underlying physics of KTO superconductivity, including the role of spin-orbit-coupling, pairing symmetry, and inhomogeneity. It also promotes KTO as a versatile platform for a growing family of quantum devices, which could be applicable in the realm of quantum computing and information.

Abstract:The Josephson junction, a key component of superconducting quantum circuits, is much less mature, especially for the high-transition (high-Tc) temperature cuprate superconductors. Herein, we report on the realization of high-Tc Josephson junction based on nanoslits on a SrTiO3 substrate. We demonstrate the ability to manipulate the current–voltage characteristics of YBa2Cu3O7−x bridges continuously from superconducting current-dominated to Josephson junction behavior by changing the irradiation parameters of the focused Ga+ ion beam on a single-crystal SrTiO3 substrate. The periodic critical current that depends on the magnetic flux coupled into the superconducting quantum interference devices was observed, which exactly reflects the effects of quantum tunneling and flux quantization. To some extent, this weak link within the framework of the semiconductor manufacturing process shows the potential to provide a cost-effective, highly efficient, and reliable pathway for scaling up quantum mechanical superconducting circuits, which is promising for the fabrication process.

Abstract:The oxide interface between LaAlO3 and KTaO3(111) can host an electron gas that condenses into superconductivity at low temperatures. In this work, we demonstrate a local and nonvolatile control of this electron gas using a biased conducting atomic force microscope tip. By scanning the tip, charges can be accumulated on the surface of LaAlO3, which subsequently tune the conduction of the buried LaAlO3/KTaO3(111) interface largely, varying from conducting (superconducting) to insulating states. The tuning effects are stable for >20 h at room temperature. The maximum modulation of carrier density is >8 ?? 1013/cm2. This result suggests a model system in which rewritable superconducting, normal, and insulating states can be flexibly defined in the same material on demand.

Abstract:The recent observation of superconductivity at the interfaces between KTaO3 and EuO (or LaAlO3) offers a new example of emergent phenomena at oxide interfaces. This superconductivity exhibits an unusual strong dependence on the crystalline orientation of KTaO3 and its superconducting transition temperature Tc is nearly one order of magnitude higher than that of the seminal LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. To understand its mechanism, it is crucial to address if the formation of oxide interfaces is indispensable for the presence of superconductivity. Here, by exploiting ionic liquid (IL) gating, we obtain superconductivity at KTaO3 (111) and (110) surfaces with Tc up to 2.0 K and 1.0 K, respectively. This oxide-interface-free superconductivity gives a clear experimental evidence that the essential physics of KTaO3 interface superconductivity lies in the KTaO3 surfaces doped with electrons. Moreover, the ability to control superconductivity at surfaces with IL provides a simple way to study the intrinsic superconductivity in KTaO3.

Abstract:Diverse phenomena emerge at the interface between band insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism, showing an opportunity for potential applications as well as contributing to fundamental research interests. Here, we report the superconductor-metal transition driven by a perpendicular magnetic field in superconducting two-dimensional electron gas formed at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) interface, which offers an appealing platform for quantum phase transition from a superconductor to a weakly localized metal. Interestingly, when approaching the quantum critical point, the dynamic critical exponent is not a constant but a diverging value, which is direct evidence of a quantum Griffiths singularity arising from quenched disorder at ultralow temperatures. Furthermore, the hysteretic property of magnetoresistance is observed at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) interface, which suggests the potential coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism.
Normal state quantum geometry and superconducting domes in (111) oxide interfaces

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the influence of the normal state quantum geometry on the superconducting phase in (111) oriented oxide interfaces and discuss some of the implications for the $\text{LaAlO}_3/\text{SrTiO}_3$ (LAO/STO) heterostructure. From a tight-binding modeling of the interface, we derive a two-band low-energy model, allowing us to analytically compute the quantum geometry and giving us access to the superfluid weight, as well as to showcase the role of two particular relevant energy scales. One is given by the trigonal crystal field which stems from the local trigonal symmetry at the interface, and the other one is due to orbital mixing at the interface. Our calculations indicate that the variation of the superfluid weight with the chemical potential $\mu$ is controlled by the quantum geometry in the low-$\mu$ limit where it presents a dome. At higher values of $\mu$ the conventional contribution dominates. In order to make quantitative comparisons between our results and experimental findings, we rely on an experimentally observed global reduction of the superfluid weight that we apply to both the conventional and geometric contributions. Furthermore, an experimentally measured non-monotonic variation of $\mu$ with the gate voltage $V_g$ is taken into account and yields a two-dome scenario for the superconducting critical temperature as a function of $V_g$. The observed dome in the low-$V_g$ regime is explained by the non-monotonic evolution of a dominant conventional part of the superfluid density. In contrast, the expected second dome at larger values of $V_g$ limit would be due to a dominant quantum-geometric contribution.

Abstract:Ferromagnetism and superconductivity are two key ingredients to create non-Abelian quasiparticle excitations that are expected as building blocks to construct topological quantum computers. Adversely, ferromagnetism and superconductivity are typically also two hostile orderings competing to align spins in different configurations, making the material design and experimental implementation extremely challenging. Recently, iron-based superconductor Fe(Te,Se) has emerged as a connate topological superconductor (TSC), which differentiates itself from other hybrid TSCs by self-proximitizing its Dirac surface states with bulk superconductivity. So far, the efforts to search for Majorana states in this material are prevalently focused on spectroscopy techniques. In this paper, we present the global transport signature of interfacial magnetism coexisting with superconductivity. Time-reversal symmetry breaking superconducting states are confirmed through device level transport measurements for the first time in a van der Waals (vdW) Josephson junction structure. Magnetic hysteresis is observed in this device scheme, which only appears below the superconducting critical temperature, leading to potential Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superconducting pairing mechanisms. The 0-{\pi} phase mixing in the Fraunhofer patterns pinpoints the ferromagnetic state dwelling on the surface. Furthermore, a stochastic field-free superconducting diode effect also confirms the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking which reflects the behavior of the ferromagnetism. Our work paves a new way to explore topological superconductivity in iron-based superconductors for future high Tc fault-tolerant qubit implementations from a device perspective.

Abstract:We study the superconducting critical fields of two-dimensional electron systems at (111)$\mathrm{LaAlO_3/KTaO_3}$ interfaces as a function of electrostatic back-gating. Our work reveals inplane critical fields of unprecedented magnitudes at oxide interfaces. By comparing the critical fields in-plane and out-of-plane we discover an extremely anisotropic superconductor with an effective thickness below 1 nm and a 12-fold violation of the Chandrasekhar-Clogston paramagnetic limit. The analysis of magneto-transport indicates that the enhancement of the critical fields is due to an exceptionally thin superconducting layer and to a paramagnetic susceptibility suppressed by spin-orbit scattering.

Quantum interference in superposed lattices

Abstract:Charge transport in solids at low temperature reveals a material's mesoscopic properties and structure. Under a magnetic field, Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations inform complex quantum transport phenomena that are not limited by the ground state characteristics. Here, in elemental metal Cr with two incommensurately superposed lattices of ions and a spin-density-wave ground state, we reveal that the phases of several low-frequency SdH oscillations in sigma_xx (rho_xx) and sigma_yy (rho_yy) are opposite, contrast with oscillations from normal cyclotron orbits that maintain identical phases. We trace the origin of the low frequency SdH oscillations to quantum interference effects arising from the incommensurate orbits of Cr's superposed reciprocal lattices, and explain the observed pi-phase shift by the reconnection of anisotropic joint open and closed orbits.

Abstract:Interfacial superconductors have the potential to revolutionize electronics, quantum computing, and fundamental physics due to their enhanced superconducting properties and ability to create new types of superconductors. The emergence of superconductivity at the interface of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$/La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ (LSCO/LCO), with a T$_c$ enhancement of $\sim$ 10 K compared to the La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ bulk single crystals, provides an exciting opportunity to study quantum phenomena in reduced dimensions. To investigate the carrier distribution and excitations in interfacial superconductors, we combine O K-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and atomic-resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements to study La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$/La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ superlattices (x=0.15, 0.45) and bulk La$_{1.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$CuO$_{4}$ films. We find direct evidence of charge redistribution, charge order and plasmon in LSCO/LCO superlattices. Notably, the observed behaviors of charge order and plasmon deviate from the anticipated properties of individual constituents or the average doping level of the superlattice. Instead, they conform harmoniously to the effective doping, a critical parameter governed by the T$_c$ of interfacial superconductors.

Abstract:On-off superconductivityIt has been a long-standing goal in applied physics to construct devices in which superconductivity can be switched on and off with an electric field. In the past few years, a promising candidate has emerged; interfaces between complex oxides, in which a variety of electronic phases can be obtained. It was recently shown that the conducting interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 (both in bulk form are insulators) can become superconducting. Caviglia et al. now use the electric field effect, which tunes the charge carrier density, to explore the phase diagram of the system. A remarkable feature is that superconductivity can be switched on and off, driving a quantum phase transition between a two-dimensional superconducting and insulating state.

Abstract:Ferromagnetism and superconductivity are two key ingredients for topological superconductors, which can serve as building blocks of fault-tolerant quantum computers. Adversely, ferromagnetism and superconductivity are typically also two hostile orderings competing to align spins in different configurations, and thus making the material design and experimental implementation extremely challenging. A single material platform with concurrent ferromagnetism and superconductivity is actively pursued. In this paper, we fabricate van der Waals Josephson junctions made with iron-based superconductor Fe(Te,Se), and report the global device-level transport signatures of interfacial ferromagnetism emerging with superconducting states for the first time. Magnetic hysteresis in the junction resistance is observed only below the superconducting critical temperature, suggesting an inherent correlation between ferromagnetic and superconducting order parameters. The 0-π phase mixing in the Fraunhofer patterns pinpoints the ferromagnetism on the junction interface. More importantly, a stochastic field-free superconducting diode effect was observed in Josephson junction devices, with a significant diode efficiency up to 10%, which unambiguously confirms the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. Our work demonstrates a new way to search for topological superconductivity in iron-based superconductors for future high T c fault-tolerant qubit implementations from a device perspective.
