Abstract:Waste Management &Research, Ahead of Print. The pyrolysis of spent coffee grounds (SCG) and polymers was examined as a waste treatment option for energy recovery and carbon sequestration. Rice straw–derived biochar was used as control biochar to evaluate the sorption capacity and energy production capability of SCG-derived biochar. SCG are characterised by high levels of volatile matter, rendering them suitable as an energy source. SCG were converted to biochar, bio-oil, and syngas via pyrolysis, with yields of 22%, 33%, and 45%, respectively. The high heating value (HHV) of the biochar and bio-oil was 20.6 and 22.9 MJ kg−1, respectively, indicating that they could be used as supplementary fuels. Co-pyrolysis with polymers (20 v v%−1) increased the HHV of biochar. Accordingly, the maximum production of CH4 and H2 increased from 0.3 and 0.04 mmol g−1 to 3.4−6.3 and 0.8−1.3 mmol g−1, respectively. Polystyrene most strongly enhanced the yields of CH4 and H2, followed by polypropylene and polyethylene; this order was likely to be in accordance with the number of carbon and hydrogen atoms present in the monomers. Similar to rice straw–derived biochar, the biochar produced from SCG demonstrated a high sorption capacity for 2,4-dinitrotoluene and chromate due to its high carbon content and anion exchange capacity, respectively. Laboratory pot tests revealed that the coffee grounds–derived biochar was able to increase the growth of young radish. Our results suggest that the pyrolysis of SCG and polymer may be a promising option for waste treatment, energy production, and carbon sequestration.

Eco-friendly, Stable, and High-Performance Biochar Prepared by a Twice-Modification Scheme: Saccharification of Raw Materials & Thermal Air Oxidation of Biochar

Abstract:Organic pollutants, such as phenolic compounds, pose significant risks to both the environment and human health. While biochar is an effective adsorbent for removing these pollutants, its dissolved solid (DS) components can lead to the loss of functional groups, structural disintegration, unstable performance, and environmental issues. This study introduces a twice-modification scheme designed to produce a biochar (BC-M) that combines high stability with superior performance. The process begins with the preparation of a stable biochar from cellulase-treated lignocellulose. This precursor biochar is then subjected to thermal air oxidation to enhance its oxygen-containing functional groups, thereby improving its adsorption capabilities. A mathematical model was developed to explore the relationship between different thermal air oxidation conditions and the properties of BC-M, aiming to optimize both adsorption capacity and DS. The model's multi-objective optimization indicated the optimal modification conditions. Compared to unmodified biochar (BC-O), BC-M showed significant improvements: its specific surface area increased by 63.6%, pore volume by 139%, and functional groups by 50%–1271%. Notably, the DS of BC-M was reduced to just 1.08 mg/L, representing a 97.5% reduction from BC-O, with a minimal mass loss of only 0.78 ± 0.45% during modification. BC-M also demonstrated a remarkable enhancement in the adsorption of phenolic compounds, with a capacity 21%–2408% higher than BC-O. Furthermore, calculations indicated that BC-M could reduce carbon emissions by 0.70 t CO2/yr/t, outperforming activated carbon in this regard. This study offers valuable insights into biochar modification, providing a low-cost, high-stability, and high-efficiency alternative for environmental cleanup.

Abstract:The observed strong sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) to biochar presents potential implications for HOCs bioavailability and bioaccessibility in sediments, while biochar could impact sediment microbial ecology. However, the comprehensive study on the effects of biochar on HOC biodegradation coupled with bioavailability and microbial ecology are rarely documented. In this paper, the effects of biochar on the biodegradation of nonylphenol (NP) were investigated using 3 different NP concentrations (20, 50 and 500 mg/Kg) in sediments amended with different percentage of rice straw biochar (RC). Results showed that the influence of RC on NP biodegradation varied with different NP concentrations. At low NP concentrations, RC suppressed NP biodegradation by reducing NP bioavailability, while at high NP concentrations, moderate RC addition promoted biodegradation by reducing toxicity of NP to microbes. The effects of NP on microbial community structures were significant (P < 0.01), but those of RC were not significant (P > 0.05). The RC affected microorganisms through altering NP toxicity, microbial quantity and activity, but not microbial community structures. This study indicated that there could be an optimal biochar percentage in biochar-sediment systems at different HOC concentrations, which strengthened HOC biodegradation process and accelerated biodegradation rate, forming adsorption-biodegradation coupled bioremediation.

Abstract:Co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge (SS) and biomass is expected to improve the biochar quality. Lignin as a major component of biomass was selected for co-pyrolysis with SS. The characteristics and kinetics of co-pyrolysis were studied by thermogravimetric analyzer/differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC) and Coats-Redfern method; the effects of pyrolysis temperature and mixing proportion on the biochar yield were investigated via muffle furnace experiment, and the porosity and methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity of the obtained co-pyrolysis biochar were evaluated. The results showed that co-pyrolysis promoted the decomposition of mixture and reduced the reaction temperature. The reaction order model was the primary mechanism model for co-pyrolysis, and both promotion and inhibition effects were observed based on the obtained activation energy. At 400 °C and 600 °C, the co-pyrolysis synergetic effect on biochar yield was weak, and synergy effect of inhibition on the porosity of biochar was caused by tar and ash adhesion. When temperature was elevated to 800 °C, catalytic effect of alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEMs) dominated the synergetic effect, promoted char decomposition, meanwhile, pores were dramatically developed. Co-pyrolysis of SS and lignin improved MB adsorption capacity of SS biochar from 14.04 mg g −1 to 180.36 mg g −1 , indicating it to be a prospective method for waste to valuable biochar production.

Abstract:To investigate the feasibility of using biochar to control organic pollutants in sediments, we extracted biochar from rice-straw combustion residues (RBC) and studied its adsorption ability and effect on seed germination ecotoxicity of pentachlorophenol (PCP). The results showed that the Freundlich and dual-mode models could describe all the sorption isotherm data well, and the log KOC values increased with increasing RBC content. With 50mgkg−1 PCP in the sediment, a significant seed growth inhibition (P<0.01) was observed. The addition of 2.0% RBC lowered the PCP concentration in the extraction liquid from 4.53 to 0.17mgL−1 and increased the germination rate and root length significantly. Furthermore, it was found that the addition of RBC had no toxic but stimulative effect on root elongation. Consequently, RBC could serve as a potential supersorbent for the remediation of organic pollution in situ.

Abstract:Sorption of organic contaminants by biochar greatly affects their bioavailability and fate in soils. Nevertheless, very little information is available regarding the effects of biochar on sorption and desorption of organic contaminants in different soil particle-size fractions. In this study, di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), a prevalent organic contaminant in agricultural soils, was taken as a model contaminant. The effects of biochar on DBP sorption and desorption in six particle-size fractions (i.e., coarse sand, fine sand, coarse silt, fine silt, clay, and humic acid fractions) of paddy soil were investigated using batch sorption-desorption experiments. A straw-derived biochar with high specific surface area (116 m(2)/g) and high content of organic matter (OM) rich in aromatic carbon (67%) was prepared. Addition of this biochar (1% and 5%) significantly promoted the sorption and retention of DBP in all the paddy soil particle-size fractions at environmentally relevant DBP concentrations (2-12 mg/L) with 1.2-132-fold increase of the K-d values. With increasing addition rates of biochar, DBP retention by the biochar enhanced. The biochar's effectiveness was remarkably influenced by the physicochemical properties of the soil particle-size fractions, especially, the OM contents and pore size showed the most striking effects. A parameter (r(kd)) reflecting the biochar's effectiveness showed negative and positive correlations with OM contents and pore size of the soil particle-size fractions, respectively. Accordingly, strong effect of the biochar was found in the soil fractions with low OM contents and high pore size. The findings of this study gave insight into the effects and influencing factors of biochar on sorption and desorption of organic contaminants in soils at scale of various particle-size factions. Abstract:Excessive amounts of sodium cations (Na+) in water is an important limiting factor to reuse poor quality water in agriculture or industry, and recently, much attention has been paid to developing cost-effective and easily available water desalination technology that is not limited to natural resources. Biochar seems to be a promising solution for reducing high loads of inorganic contaminant from water and soil solution, and due to the high availability of biomass in agriculture and forestry, its production for these purposes may become beneficial. In the present research, wheat straw, sunflower husk, and pine-chip biochars produced at 250, 450 and 550 °C under simple torrefaction/pyrolysis conditions were chemically modified with ethanol or HCl to determine the effect of these activations on Na sorption capacity from aqueous solution. Biochar sorption property measurements, such as specific surface area, cation exchange capacity, content of base cations in exchangeable forms, and structural changes of biochar surface, were performed by FTIR and EPR spectrometry to study the effect of material chemical activation. The sorption capacity of biochars and activated carbons was investigated by performing batch sorption experiments, and adsorption isotherms were tested with Langmuir’s and Freundlich’s models. The results showed that biochar activation had significant effects on the sorption characteristics of Na+, increasing its capacity (even 10-folds) and inducing the mechanism of ion exchange between biochar and saline solution, especially when ethanol activation was applied. The findings of this study show that biochar produced through torrefaction with ethanol activation requires lower energy demand and carbon footprint and, therefore, is a promising method for studying material applications for environmental and industrial purposes.

N-doped biochar mediated peroxydisulfate activation for selective degradation of bisphenol A: The key role of potential difference-driven electron transfer mechanism

Abstract:N-doped biochar has emerged as a promising material for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation to degrade organic pollutants; however, its reaction mechanism remains elusive. In this study, we synthesized N-doped piggery biogas residue biochar (NBRBC) and investigated an NBRBC-mediated PDS activation system for contaminants degradation. The experimental results show that the NBRBC/PDS system exhibits superior activity for selective degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) via an electron transfer pathway (ETP) but does not work for the degradation of bisphenol S (BPS) and hexafluorobisphenol A (BPAF). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the removal efficiencies of contaminants are highly related to the potential difference (E PD ) between the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) of contaminants and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the NBRBC/PDS system (R 2 = 0.9568). Contaminants with low E PD (e.g., BPA) were more easily degraded via ETP, while the oxidation of high E PD contaminants (e.g., BPS, BPAF) was inert to ETP. In addition, N-doping process endowed NBRBC with superior PDS activation activity by lowering the E HOMO −E LUMO gap of the NBRBC/PDS system, thereby accelerating electron transfer. Graphitic carbon, pyridinic N and graphitic N are regarded as the predominant active sites. Our NBRBC/PDS system also possessed resistance to the interference of water matrix and efficient mineralization capacity during BPA degradation. This work further clarified the in-depth mechanism of PDS activation over N-doped biochar catalysts, unraveled the mysterious selective degradation behavior of the NBRBC/PDS system toward BPA, and provides a novel perspective for developing a "fit-for-purpose" strategy for organic wastewater purification.

Abstract:Biochar is an inexpensive alternative to activated carbon for adsorption of phenolic pollutants. Dissolved solids released from biochar, including organic and inorganic compounds, may affect the stable adsorption efficiency of biochar as an adsorbent. Using saccharification residue of rice straw to prepare biochar (biochar-SR) can improve the stability of biochar and reduce its cost. Biochar-SR and biochar prepared directly from rice straw (biochar-O) contained basically the same types of surface functional groups but the numbers of lactone, phenolic, and carbonyl groups in biochar-SR were 55.56%, 50.57%, and 311.56% higher than those in biochar-O, respectively. The total volume and diameter of pores and specific surface area of biochar-SR were 38%, 51%, and 167% higher than those of biochar-O, respectively. The adsorption data of biochar-SR fit better to a Freundlich model, indicating non-uniform multilayer adsorption. Compared with biochar-O, the equilibrium adsorption capacity of biochar-SR was 41.63% higher, and it had significantly better stability and reusability. These results demonstrated that the preparation method of biochar-SR could significantly improve the adsorption capacity, stability, and environmental and economic benefits of biochar as an adsorbent.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The effect of oxalic acid on phenanthrene sorption was varied from that on pyrene sorption. 1.0 mg L-1 of oxalic acid inhibited phenanthrene sorption, whereas 20, 50 and 100 mg L-1 of oxalic acid enhanced the sorption. However, pyrene sorption onto biochar was all inhibited among different concentrations of oxalic acid. New functional groups and increased polarity were observed in the biochar coexisted with oxalic acid, moreover, a high concentration of oxalic acid led to an increased specific surface area of the biochar. These changed factors contributed to biochar sorption to phenanthrene, which was dominated by surface adsorption. Weakened aromaticity and increased release of dissolved organic carbon from biochar may have been the main reason for inhibited pyrene sorption onto biochar by oxalic acid. Therefore, this study suggested that root exudates could greatly influence the sorption behavior of biochar towards PAHs in soil rhizosphere, which deserves attention in agricultural systems.

Abstract:Iron (Fe)/iron oxide-modified biochar has practicable adsorption capability for phosphorus (P), but it is expensive. In this study, we synthesized novel low-cost and eco-friendly adsorbents co-pyrolyzed biochars using Fe-rich red mud (RM) and peanut shell (PS) wastes via a one-step pyrolysis process for removing P from pickling wastewater. The preparation conditions (heating rate, pyrolysis temperature, and feedstock ratio) and P adsorption behaviors were systematically investigated. In addition, a series of characterization and approximate site energy distribution (ASED) analyses were conducted to understand the P adsorption mechanisms. The magnetic biochar (BR7P3) with m (RM):m (PS) of 7:3 prepared at 900°C and 10 °C/min had a high surface area (164.43 m 2 /g) and different abundant ions (including Fe 3+ , and Al 3+ ). In addition, BR7P3 exhibited the best P removal capability (142.6 mg/g). The Fe 2 O 3 from RM was successfully reduced to Fe 0 , which was easily oxidized as Fe 3+ to precipitate with H 2 PO 4 − . The electrostatic effect, Fe–O–P bonding, and surface precipitation were the main mechanisms of P removal. ASED analyses revealed that high distribution frequency and solution temperature led to a high P adsorption rate of the adsorbent. Therefore, this study provides new insight into the waste-to-wealth strategy by transforming PS and RM into mineral-biomass biochar with excellent P adsorption capability and environmental adaptability.

Abstract:Biochar obtained from a biomass pyrolytic polygeneration technology exhibits great potential as an adsorbent, because of its renewability, porosity and desirable surface chemical properties. Pyrolysis temperature and feed are important elements in the preparation of biochar. Thus, the effects of these factors on the physicochemical properties of biochar were investigated in this study. The adsorption of biochar was evaluated using water, CO2, phenol, and methylene blue (MB) as adsorbates. The correlation between adsorption capacity and physicochemical properties was determined using the Pearson correlation. Results indicated that temperature could significantly affect the structure of biochar. The effects of biomass species were also noticeable as well. The number of macropores and their contribution to the total surface area for cotton stalk, bamboo, and rapeseed stalk increased with an increase in temperatures, meanwhile, the number of micropores decreased at high temperatures. At the same temperature, the macropore, mesopore, and micropore components of biochar produced by different species were markedly different. The water adsorption and CO2 adsorption of biochar were close to those of commercial activated carbon (AC), whereas the adsorption capacity of untreated biochar on phenol and MB was less than that of AC. Porosity exerted more significant effects on the adsorption capacity of biochar, compared with functional groups. The surface area of the micropores exhibited a significant positive correlation with the adsorption of CO2, phenol, and MB. The hydroxyl group was positively correlated with water adsorption.

Abstract:Bio-chars with high adsorption capacity derived from rice-husks and corncobs were prepared at different retention times (RTs) in a pyrolysis reactor. At a fixed pyrolysis temperature, the pyrolysis RT is a key factor influencing the surface areas and functional group contents of the bin-chars, and further influencing their adsorption capacities. The results indicate that the bio-char prepared at RT of 1.6 s exhibits a higher phenol adsorption capacity (589 mg g(-1)) than other bio-chars and many activated carbons reported in the literature. An adsorption mechanism based on acid-base interaction and hydrogen binding between phenol and the functional groups was proposed to elucidate the adsorption process. Abstract:It is unclear how the properties of biochar control its ability to sorb metals. In this work, physicochemical properties of a variety of biochars, made from four types of feedstock at three pyrolysis temperatures (300, 450 and 600°C) were compared to their ability to sorb arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in aqueous solutions. Experimental results showed that both feedstock types and pyrolysis temperature affected biochar's production rate, i.e., ratio of mass of biochar and biomass, thermal stability, elemental composition, non-combustible component (NCC) content, pH values, surface areas and thus their sorption ability to the two metals in aqueous solution. In general, the high temperature biochars had low O/C and H/C ratios, were more carbonized with larger surface area, and were more concentrated with alkaline cations. In addition, biochars made from woody feedstocks had larger surface area, but lower NCC contents than that made from grasses under the same conditions. Although all the tested biochars removed both As and Pb from aqueous solutions, they showed different sorption abilities because of the variations in properties. Statistical analyses suggested that feedstock type affected the sorption ability of the biochars to both As and Pb significantly (p<0.001). Pyrolysis temperature, however, showed little influence on biochar sorption of Pb in aqueous solutions. Statistical analyses also showed that electrostatic interaction played an important role in controlling the sorption of both As(V) and Pb(II) onto the biochar. Other mechanisms, such as precipitation and surface complexation, could also control the sorption of Pb(II) onto the biochars.

Abstract:Biochar enriched with metals has an increased potential for sorption of organic and inorganic pollutants. The aim of the research was to identify the possibility of using biochar composites produced on the basis of waste plant biomass and waste FFH (ferryferrohydrosol) containing iron atoms, after CO2 capture. The composites were produced in a one-stage or two-stage pyrolysis process. Their selected properties were determined as follows: pH, ash content, C, H, N, O, specific surface area, microstructure and the presence of surface functional groups. The produced biochar and composites had different properties resulting from the production method and the additive used. The results of experiments on the removal of methylene blue (MB) from solutions allowed us to rank the adsorbents used according to the maximum dye removal value achieved as follows: BC1 (94.99%), B (84.61%), BC2 (84.09%), BC3 (83.23%) and BC4 (83.23%). In terms of maximum amoxicillin removal efficiency, the ranking is as follows: BC1 (55.49%), BC3 (23.51%), BC2 (18.13%), B (13.50%) and BC4 (5.98%). The maximum efficiency of diclofenac removal was demonstrated by adsorbents BC1 (98.71), BC3 (87.08%), BC4 (74.20%), B (36.70%) and BC2 (30.40%). The most effective removal of metals Zn, Pb and Cd from the solution was demonstrated by BC1 and BC3 composites. The final concentration of the tested metals after sorption using these composites was less than 1% of the initial concentration. The highest increase in biomass on prepared substrates was recorded for the BC5 composite. It was higher by 90% and 54% (for doses of 30 g and 15 g, respectively) in relation to the biomass growth in the soil without additives. The BC1 composite can be used in pollutant sorption processes. However, BC5 has great potential as a soil additive in crop yield and plant growth.

Composition and sorption properties of rice-straw derived biochars

Abstract:A series of biochars was prepared by pyrolyzing rice straw,an agricultural wastes,at various temperatures(100～700 ℃) under an oxygen-limited condition.The compositions of biochars were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis(TG-DTG),elemental composition(CHNO),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) and BET-N2 specific surface area analysis.Sorption properties of biochars with nitrobenzene,p-nitrotoluene,naphthalene and phenanthrene were investigated.Sorption mechanisms and influential factors were discussed.The result shows that rice straw derived biochars are rich in organic and inorganic fractions.With the increase of the pyrolytic temperature,the organic fraction is progressively pyrolyzed while the inorganic fraction is remained.When the pyrolytic temperature increases from 100 ℃ to 700 ℃,the organic content and polarity of biochar decrease,whereas the aromaticity dramatically increases.The micropores of biochars are suddenly developed and surface area is sharply enlarged(0.16→110 m2 · g-1) when the pyrolyzing temperature rises from 300 ℃ to 400 ℃,which are consistent with the structural alteration derived from FTIR and TG-DTG data.Sorption isotherms fit well with the Freundlich equation,and the Freundlich regression parameters(i.e.,N and logKf) are linearly related to the biochars' aromaticity indices(the H/C atomic ratio).Sorption of biochar is mainly governed by the organic fraction.Contributions of adsorption and partition to total sorption of biochars are quantified.Sorption isotherms of biochars were evolved from linear at relative low pyrolytic temperature to nonlinear at relative high pyrolytic temperature.Correspondingly,the sorption mechanisms were transformed from partition-dominated to combination of partition and adsorption and then to adsorption-dominated.Partition fractions were positively correlated with octanol-water partition coefficients(logKow) of organic pollutants,while adsorption was controlled by chemicals' hydrophobicity,dimension and polarity compatibilities between organic molecules and biochars.These observations will provide a theoretical basis to design a cost-effective and high-efficient sorbent based on agricultural biomass waste.
Enhanced sorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by soil amended with biochar

Abstract:Purpose Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) are ubiquitous pollutants in agricultural soils in China. Biochar is the charred product of biomass pyrolysis, which is widely applied to soils to sequestrate atmospheric carbon dioxide and guarantees a long-term benefit for soil fertility. Knowledge about the impacts of various biochars on soil sorption affinity remains obscure. In this study, we evaluated the effects of various biochars on PAHs sorption to biochar-amended agricultural soil. Materials and methods Biochar of pine needle were produced under different pyrolytic temperatures (100°C, 300°C, 400°C, and 700°C, referred as P100-P700) and inputted into a paddy soil with various content. A batch equilibration method was used to determine sorption of PAHs (naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene) in biochar amendment treated and untreated soil. The effects of biochar on PAHs sorption in biochar-amended soil were discussed. Results and discussion Biochars impose different effects on PAHs sorption by biochar-amended soil. P100 added to soil increased the linearity of sorption isotherm due to the linear-type isotherm of P100. While the nonlinearity of sorption isotherm for P300, P400, and P700 amended soil were increased with the increase of biochar content in soil. Biochar produced under high pyrolytic temperature demonstrated high efficiency in improving the sorption affinity of biochar-amended soil, and the total sorption were largely controlled by biochar when P300 content was larger than 0.5%, and P400 and P700 content above 0.1%. The predicted sorption of soil amended with P100 and P300 was consistent with their experimental values. However, for P400 and P700 amended soil, the actual sorption was lower than the predicted. Conclusions The results shown that added biochar into soil may enhance the sorption of PAHs to soil, thus provide a theoretical reference to apply biochar to mitigating the PAHs-contaminated soils through transferring PAHs from soil to biochar.

Abstract:Advanced clay sorbents have attracted widespread attentions for applications in environment remediation and pollution control. Here, a facile and environmentally-friendly approach to synthesizing a porous Na-bentonite/ hickory-biochar composite sorbent from hickory waste biomass using hand-milling and carbon-bed pyrolysis was investigated. The sorbents, made using a range of clay/biomass ratios and at a range of temperatures, were characterized and examined for their ability to remove Eriochrome blue black R (EBBR) anionic organic dyes from aqueous solution. The composite sorbents showed increased microporosity and O-containing functional groups over the pyrolyzed bentonite control. The composite prepared with 10% biomass by weight, and at 600 degrees C had the greatest EBBR adsorption, and was best fit to Freundlich isotherm and intraparticle diffusion kinetics models. The modeled maximum EBBR sorption capacity of this composite (2020.5 mg g-1, R2 adj = 0.92), which was attributed to the dispersion of bentonite particles over the biochar surface. These results show the bentonite/ biochar composite to have great potential for use in environmental remediation applications.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous biochar has aroused great interest in energy storage and adsorption applications. In this study, nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous biochar was prepared from corn stalks by in situ pyrolysis with urea as the nitrogen source and NaHCO3 as the green activation agent. The liquid adsorption behavior of biochar was evaluated using phenol as a pollutant probe. The results showed that urea had a synergistic effect on the pore structure development of biochar in the presence of an activation agent. The addition of urea especially promoted the formation of micropores. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that nitrogen atoms were successfully introduced into the skeleton of biochar in the form of different nitrogen species, which promote the adsorption of phenol. The phenol adsorption was dominated by micropore filling, and the adsorption capacity was positively correlated with the content of graphitic N. The nitrogen-doped biochar obtained at 700 degrees C with a moderate surface area and a high content of graphite type N exhibited the highest adsorption capacity of phenol. The kinetic analysis also indicates the existence of chemical interactions in the adsorption process.

Abstract:With the goal of fostering the circular economy, the present work was devised to minimize and manage agricultural waste by transforming it into biochar; a versatile dye removal adsorbent. Waterways across the globe are frequently fouled and contaminated with organic materials, especially via unregulated industrial effluents, producing toxic water supplies. Rhodamine B (RhB) and Methylene blue (MB) dyes were used as model organic pollutants in water. The contaminants were then readily extracted from environmental samples using sustainable wheat straw derived biochars. These materials were utilized in an effort to link the circular economy directly to environmental protection, reducing organic contamination by using a low carbon solution. Herein, two methods were adopted to refine a low temperature carbonized material, dependent on initial pre-treatment; leaching followed by milling (method-I) and milling followed by leaching (method-II). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), nitrogen physisorption, proximate and ultimate analysis and Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) were used to examine the properties of the synthesized materials. It was found that by altering the process of initial waste pre-treatment, an increase in available surface area (6.284 m 2 g −1 –20.754 m 2 g −1 ) and pore structure can be found post feedstock pyrolysis. Additionally, FTIR of the biochar post extraction supported the adsorption process of both dyes, demonstrating a change in dye-adsorbent bonding, depending on the initial waste pre-treatment for the biochar. In batch mode, several operating parameters including pH, concentration, duration, and dose were optimized. Kinetics and adsorption isotherm studies for biochar synthesized by method-II pre-treatment (BC-II) revealed that the system follows Pseudo-first-order kinetics and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model with the relative R 2 of 0.9989 and 0.9880 for RhB, comparing with 0.9933 and 0.9932 for MB. The optimal produced biochar, BC-II effectively removed 91.06% of RhB from solution at pH 4 and 92.43% for MB at pH 8. This study brings forth a solution to enhance waste management by creating a circular scenario and alleviate environmental contamination by utilizing wheat straw as a biochar adsorbent, produced under controlled and low temperature conditions.
