Abstract:Lake geoengineering with phosphorus (P)-inactivating materials to reduce sediment P loading is often used for eutrophication control. The redistribution of materials in sediment, especially those induced by resuspension, is reportedly a common phenomenon during practical applications, which may interfere with the pollution control. Notably, a recent study by the authors initially found that the heterogeneous properties of materials and sediments varied the P immobilization in different sized sediments which exhibited diverse movement characteristics. Therefore, this study hypothesizes a particle size-related vertical redistribution of materials in the sediment profile induced by resuspension, which shapes sediment P immobilization at different depths. Based on two differently sized materials, lanthanum (La)-modified bentonite clay (Phoslock) and drinking water treatment residue (DWTR), this study found a weakened reduction of mobile P and bioavailable P pool by both DWTR and Phoslock in surface sediment after resuspension. As the depth decreased from >12 to surface 0-1 cm, the remaining mobile P increased from 7.11%-10.8% to 11.0%-17.8% of the total P in the sediment with Phoslock and from 1.66%-4.73% to 9.70%-20.7% of the total P in the sediment with DWTR; meanwhile, bioavailable P pool reduction proportions decreased from 48.6%-72.3% to 3.23%-45.1% for Phoslock and from 51.5%-71.4% to 4.94%-25.2% for DWTR. Further analysis verified the hypothesis of this study; importantly, the redistributions of the potential target P (including mobile and bioavailable P) for immobilization were regulated by relatively small sediments (e.g., <8 μm fraction), which tended to become enriched in surface sediment after resuspension, while relatively large materials (e.g., >63 μm fraction) regulated their redistributions and were more likely to be buried at the bottom of the sediments. Accordingly, to design appropriate strategies for lake geoengineering, relatively small materials (e.g., <8 μm) targeting to immobilize both mobile and bioavailable P are typically recommended to be developed for restoration of lakes with frequent sediment resuspension.

Abstract:The classical lake internal phosphorus (P) pollution control using P-inactivating materials is typically carried out by reducing the release of soluble P from sediments to overlying water; however, particulate P loading through sediment resuspension could also cause internal P pollution for algae breeding. Therefore, based on lanthanum modified bentonite clay (Phoslock®) and drinking water treatment residues (DWTR), the effect of P inactivating materials on sediment resuspension and settlement were comprehensively investigated to assess the variations in particulate P pollution from sediment. Results showed that both materials could effectively control soluble P pollution from sediment, while both had limited effect on the supplement of particulate P to overlying water. The reason may be that hydrodynamic disturbance was the key factor regulating sediment resuspension and settlement. The disturbance induced the resuspension of different sized sediments, especially <8 μm fractions, while increasing disturbing intensities promoted resuspension of relatively larger sized sediments (e.g., <63 μm). Further analysis suggested that after resuspension and settlement, the efficiencies of reducing bioavailable P by Phoslock® in relatively large sized sediment fraction (e.g., <63 μm) were substantially less than those in relatively small sized sediment (<8 μm). Although the reducing efficacies of DWTR had limited changes in different sized sediments, the remaining bioavailable P were clearly higher in smaller sized sediments with DWTR. The different performances on bioavailable P reduction mainly resulted from the distributions of materials and original P in different sized sediments. These findings indicated the potential supplement of particulate P for algal growth during resuspension and settlement of sediments amended by P inactivating materials. Overall, understanding the sediment P bioavailability and hydraulic properties at different sizes and the lake hydrodynamic conditions is essential to develop appropriate methods to control lake internal P pollution.

Abstract:Excessive nutrient loading and changing hydrological regimes can significantly impact the ecological function of wetland ecosystems. Three wetland sediment samples collected from West Lake, Xiazhuhu Wetland and Baoyang River in the Taihu Lake Watershed, China, were compared to understand the P retention properties responding to hydrological regimes by using static column and steady-flow flume laboratory-scale experiments. Sediment in Xiazhuhu Wetland currently function as a P sink with equilibrium P concentration (EPC0) values of 0.010mgL−1, while sediments from West Lake and Baoyang River, have EPC0 values of 0.050mgL−1 and 0.023mgL−1, respectively, and serve as an internal P source. The P retention by sediments ranged from 17.20 to 22.61mgm−2d−1 under 35-d static conditions, while sediment beds continuously fed by the simulated inflow water containing 2mgL−1 P ranged from 59.20 to 171.93mgm−2d−1. The P removal capacities by sediments were higher during the rainy season than the dry season when wetlands were subjected to excessive P input. Since the majority of external P stored in sediment is in the form of Al-P (e.g., for Xiazhuhu wetland), the application of alum to water column could potentially increase the P retention capacity of sediment.
Phosphorus migration from sediment to phosphorus-inactivating material: A key process neglected by common phosphorus immobilization assessments for lake geoengineering

Abstract:Various phosphorus (P)-inactivating materials with a strong capability of immobilizing P in sediment have been developed for lake geoengineering purposes to control internal P pollution. However, unsatisfactory applications have raised concerns about the reliability of the method. This study hypothesized that P migration from sediment to material is a key process regulating the immobilization, which is often neglected by common assessment procedures that assume that the material is closely in contact with sediment (e.g., as mixtures). To verify this hypothesis, 90-day incubation tests were conducted using drinking water treatment residue (DWTR). The results showed that the soluble P in the overlying water of sediment-DWTR mixtures and the mobile P in the mixtures were substantially reduced from the initial period and remained low during the whole incubation tests. However, assessment based on separated samples indicated a gradual P migration from sediment to DWTR for immobilization. Even after 90 days of incubation, mobile P still accounted for ∼5.33% of total P in the separated sediment. Further analysis suggested that using mixtures of sediment with DWTR accelerated P migration during the assessment, leading to a faster P immobilization assessment. Considering the relatively low levels of mobile P in the separated DWTR during incubation, the gradual decrease in mobile P in the separated sediment indicates that sediment P release regulates P immobilization efficiency. Therefore, designing a proper strategy to ensure sufficient time for the material to remain in close contact with the target sediment is critical to reducing uncertainties in lake geoengineering.
Use of Lanthanum/aluminum Co-Modified Granulated Attapulgite Clay As a Novel Phosphorus (P) Sorbent to Immobilize P and Stabilize Surface Sediment in Shallow Eutrophic Lakes

Abstract:It is crucial to develop a phosphorus (P) sorbent to immobilize sediment mobile P from shallow eutrophic lakes with frequent sediment resuspension and high pH values. In this study, lanthanum (La) and aluminum (Al) were co-incorporated into granulated thermally treated calcium-rich attapulgite (TCAP) to prepare a novel P sorbent to overcome these problems in eutrophic lake management. The maximum P sorption capacity of the La/Al comodified TCAP (LA@TCAP) is 10.6 mg/g, and the granulated P sorbent performs well in a wide range of pH values during sorption from solution. A total of 124 days of sediment incubation study (34 days of aerobic incubation and 90 days of anaerobic incubation) indicated that more than 50% of the soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in overlying water can be reduced with the theoretical dosage in comparison with the control treatment. More than 40% of P flux across the sediment-water can be reduced with a theoretical dosage, and 60% of the mobile fraction of P in surface sediment can be reduced and transformed into stable inert P fractions such as NaOH-rP (Al-P) and HCl-P (Ca-P) during the whole period of incubation. Results also indicated that the granule LA@TCAP can stabilize surface sediment and thus reduce suspended solids, SRP, and TP in a water column in simulated frequent sediment resuspension when compared with traditional P sorbent (aluminium sulfate). Furthermore, the inactivated P forms in sediment remained relatively stable under elevated pH values. XPS analysis indicated that P sorbed by LA@TCAP mainly formed by inner-sphere complexation with Al and La. All results of this study indicate that LA@TCAP has the potential for sediment P remediation from shallow eutrophic lakes.
Effects of different chemical agents on changes in sediment phosphorus composition and the response of sediment microbial community

Abstract:Controlling the release of sediment phosphorus (P) using chemical agents is a promising method for controlling internal P in eutrophic lakes. However, mineral P formation and changes in the organic P composition after sediment amendment with P-inactivation agents remain poorly understood. Furthermore, little is known about the changes in the sediment microbial community composition after remediation. Here, various ratios of poly aluminum chloride (PAC) and lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) were added to nutrient-rich sediments and incubated. Sequential P extraction, solution/solid-state 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and microbial analyses were periodically performed on the inactivated sediments. The results indicate that PAC and LMB effectively reduced sediment iron-bound P and organic P, respectively, markedly increasing the content of aluminum- and calcium-bound P in the sediment, respectively. Solid-state 31 P NMR results confirmed the formation of rhabdophane (LaPO 4 . nH 2 O) in the LMB-amended sediment. Solution 31 P NMR results showed that PAC preferentially reduced the organic P fractions of pyrophosphate, whereas LMB efficiently reduced the organic P fractions of orthophosphate, monoesters, and diesters in the sediment. Compared with the control sediment, PAC addition can cause short-term negative effects on sediment microbes at high doses, whereas LMB addition can increase bacterial diversity or richness in the sediment. These results provide a deeper understanding of the differences between PAC and LMB in internal sediment P control.

Abstract:The importance of controlling internal phosphorus (P) pollution in lakes has been recognized by scientists, and the application of P-inactivating materials to immobilize sediment P is often considered. However, sediment resuspension, a typical physical process occurring in lakes, has been demonstrated to increase the uncertainty of immobilization. In this study, we explored the characteristics of P immobilization in the horizontal direction under the effects of resuspension using annular flume tests based on drinking water treatment residuals (DWTR). The results showed that resuspension caused the mobile P and bioavailable P to be heterogeneously distributed in sediment planes after DWTR addition, resulting in varying P immobilization efficiencies at different depths. In particular, the coefficient of variation was 14.2–24.5% for mobile P horizontally distributed in the planes, resulting in a range of mobile P decreasing efficiencies at 24.0–47.8%. Further analysis indicated that variations in horizontal distribution were typically due to the varied migration of particles of different sizes. Specifically, P immobilization in sediment planes at different depths was regulated by promoting the migration of 63 μm DWTR (to the bottom) with the mixing of <8 μm DWTR in the sediment plane at different depths. The varying horizontal distributions of total P, resulting from the migration of 16–32 μm sediment, could enhance the heterogeneities of the P immobilization. Thus, the particle size of materials and lake background conditions, for example, the hydrodynamic characteristics and P distributions in differently sized sediments, should be used as key bases to select or develop P-inactivating materials to design proper remediation strategies for controlling internal P pollution in lakes.

Abstract:Developing a long-term method for controlling sediment N and P release is important for enabling lake restoration. In this study, inactivation methods using lanthanum-modified clay, modified zeolite, or planting aquatic vegetation and their combinations were used in the control internal sediment loading (pore water N and P concentrations and their fluxes), and the efficacies of the methods were analyzed. The results indicated that compared to the control sediment, the addition of P sorbent, which was La and Al co-modified attapulgite (ACLA), and N sorbent, which was NaCl-modified zeolite (modified zeolite), planting of aquatic vegetation Vallisneria spiralis ( V. spiralis ), and a combination of sorbents and plants effectively reduced the porewater nutrient content and its fluxes across the sediment-water interface. However, the reduction in pore water nutrients and flux were superior when using a combination of clay inactivation and aquatic planting. The poorest sediment N and P control was achieved by planting V. spiralis alone. The addition of La and Al co-modified attapulgite (ACLA) and modified zeolite efficiently reduced N and P in the sediment, but the N and P sorbents did not achieve long-lasting nutrient release control. The high efficiency obtained by the combination of modified clay-based inactivation and V. spiralis was likely due to the strong chemical sorption capacity of clay and oxygenation by the rhizosphere of aquatic vegetation. These results show that a combination of chemical and ecological methods would be the most effective approach to remediate polluted sediments in the long term.

Abstract:Sediment phosphorus (P) diagenesis and release in polymictic systems are poorly understood. Here, we determine the mechanistic controls on the processes that drive P release from the sediments in Lake of the Woods (LOW). The vertical distributions of the relevant diagenetic parameters—including oxygen, pH, redox potential, dissolved P, iron (Fe) and other metals in the porewater—were measured, and the fluxes of dissolved oxygen and P across the sediment-water interface (SWI) at the four locations in LOW were quantified. We characterized solid P speciation and analyzed the iron and corresponding metal contents in five sediment P binding forms. Short-term diffusive fluxes of P ranged between 0.3 and 7.8 mg m−2d−1, controlled by the mineralization of freshly deposited organic matter and the redox-sensitive iron cycle. Long-term net P release rates were between 0.21 and 9.96 mg m−2d−1, controlled by the diagenetic remineralization of P binding pools, which regulates long-term sediment P releases. Hypoxia may have led to the release of previously stored FeP in the sediments, which has likely increased internal P loading for a timescale that is longer than seasonal. While Fe-sorbed phosphorus is the major barrier for P release in the surface sediments, P is immobilized in deep sediments via the formation of calcium (Ca)-P, aluminum (Al)-P, and possibly vivianite. Our study demonstrates the importance of sediments as sources of the productivity-limiting nutrient phosphorus; reveals the geochemical controls on sediment P release; and helps further the understanding of how sediments regulate water quality and affect eutrophication and the possibility of algal blooms.

Abstract:Sustained eutrophication of the aquatic environment by the remobilization of legacy phosphorus (P) stored in soils and sediments is a prevailing issue worldwide. Fluxes of P from the sediments to the water column, referred to as internal P loading, often delays the recovery of water quality following a reduction in external P loads. Here, we report on the vertical distribution and geochemistry of P, lanthanum (La), iron (Fe) and carbon (C) in the culturally eutrophied Lake Bromont. This lake underwent remediation treatment using La- modified bentonite (LMB) commercially available as Phoslock TM . We investigated the effectiveness of LMB in decreasing soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) availability in sediments and in reducing dissolved fluxes of P across the sediment-water interface. Sediment cores were retrieved before and after LMB treatment at three sites representing bottom sediment, littoral sediment influenced by the lake inflow, and finally sediment influenced by lakeside housing. Sequential extractions were used to assess changes in P speciation. Depth profiles of dissolved porewater concentrations were obtained after LMB treatment at each site. Results indicate that SRP extracted from the sediments decreased at all sites, while total extracted P (PTOT) bound to redox-sensitive metal oxides increased. 31 P NMR data on P extract reveals that 20-43% of total solid-phase P is in the form of organic P susceptible to be released via microbial degradation. Geochemical modelling of porewater data provides evidence that LaPO 4(s) mineral phases, such as rhabdophane and/or monazite, are likely forming. However, results also suggest that La 3+ binding by dissolved organic carbon (DOC) hinders La-phosphate precipitation. We rely on thermodynamic modelling to suggest that high Fe 2+ would bind to DOC instead of La 3+ , therefore promoting P sequestrations by LMB under anoxic conditions.
Synthesis of Lanthanum-Modified Attapulgite and Its Phosphorus-Fixing Mechanism for Urban Eutrophic Lake

Abstract:Metal-salt-modified clay minerals are widely used for endogenous phosphorus control in eutrophic lakes because of its high efficiency of P adsorption, but changes in water quality due to material dosing limit their practical remediation performance. In this study, lanthanum was embedded in thermally-treated calcium-rich attapulgite (TCAP) to strengthen its P uptake ability, and a novel and efficient phosphorus fixation material lanthanum-modified attapulgite (La-TCAP) was synthesized. Batch adsorption experiment indicated that the maximum P sorption capacity of La-TCAP can reach as high as 9.777 mg P/g, which was more than twice that of TCAP. The P removal rate of La-TCAP was maintained between 55.62% and 68% at 4–10 pH. La-TCAP exhibits strong resistance to interfering ions including SO 4 2− , NO 3 − , Cl − , and HCO 3 − during phosphorus adsorption. The characterization analysis of La-TCAP showed that the adsorption of phosphate on La-TCAP was mainly based on the surface complexation reaction. Sediment P immobilization studies demonstrated that the coverage of La-TCAP contributed the P recession of 30% to 58.8% in overlying water during the aerobic and anaerobic incubation. Meanwhile, other water quality indicators in the overlying water had hardly changed. The content of Mobile-P in the surface sediments (0–4 cm) was drastically reduced, while the content of Al-P and Ca-P was greatly increased. The results of this study suggest that La-TCAP is a promising P immobilization material for sediment P control in urban eutrophic lake.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR AGILE SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT METHODS GOVERNANCE

Abstract:After introducing Agile approach in 2001, several Agile methods were founded over the last decade. Agile values such as customer collaboration, embracing changes,iteration and frequent delivery, continuous integration, etc. motivate all software stakeholders to use these methods in their projects. Moving to Agile methods needs a huge change in organization and involved people. This change is a fundamental and critical mutation. The main issue is that Agile transition and governance action plan needs to consider different aspects of change related issues. Conduction a Grounded Theory study with participation of 37 Agile experts from 13 countries showed that software companies should consider three main factors before inception of transformation action plan: Adoption styles, Method selection and Awareness of challenges and constraints. These fundamental considerations encompass many critical items for Agile movement and adoption process. However these items may lead to different results in different companies, but they should be studied in deep before any transition action plan.
Assessing the impacts of phosphorus inactive clay on phosphorus release control and phytoplankton community structure in eutrophic lakes

Abstract:Addressing the challenge that phosphorus is the key factor and cause for eutrophication, we evaluated the phosphorus release control performance of a new phosphorus inactive clay (PIC) and compared with Phoslock®. Meanwhile, the impacts of PIC and Phoslock® on phytoplankton abundance and community structure in eutrophic water were also discussed. With the dosage of 40 mg/L, PIC effectively removed 97.7% of total phosphorus (TP) and 98.3% of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in eutrophic waters. In sediments, Fe/Al-phosphorus and organic phosphorus remained stable whereas Ca-phosphorus had a significant increase of 13.1%. The results indicated that PIC may form the active overlay at water-sediment interface and decrease the bioavailability of phosphorus. The phytoplankton abundance was significantly reduced by PIC and decreased from (1.0-2.4) × 107 cells/L to (1.3-4.3) × 106 cells/L after 15 d simultaneous experiment. The phytoplankton community structure was also altered, where Cyanobacteria and Bacillariophyceae were the most inhibited and less dominant due to their sensitivity to phosphorus. After PIC treatment, the residual lanthanum concentration in water was 1.44-3.79 μg/L, and the residual aluminium concentration was low as 101.26-103.72 μg/L, which was much less than the recommended concentration of 200 μg/L. This study suggests that PIC is an appropriate material for phosphorus inactivation and algal bloom control, meaning its huge potential application in eutrophication restoration and management.
The combined effects of macrophytes (Vallisneria denseserrulata) and a lanthanum-modified bentonite on water quality of shallow eutrophic lakes: A mesocosm study

Abstract:Establishment of submerged macrophyte beds and application of chemical phosphorus inactivation are common lake restoration methods for reducing internal phosphorus loading. The two methods operate via different mechanisms and may potentially supplement each other, especially when internal phosphorous loading is continuously high. However, their combined effects have so far not been elucidated. Here, we investigated the combined impact of the submerged macrophyte Vallisneria denseserrulata and a lanthanum-modified bentonite (Phoslock®) on water quality in a 12-week mesocosm experiment. The combined treatment led to stronger improvement of water quality and a more pronounced reduction of porewater soluble reactive phosphorus than each of the two measures. In the combined treatment, total porewater soluble reactive phosphorus in the top 10 cm sediment layers decreased by 78% compared with the control group without Phoslock® and submerged macrophytes. Besides, in the upper 0-1 cm sediment layer, mobile phosphorus was transformed into recalcitrant forms (e.g. the proportion of HCl-P increased to 64%), while in the deeper layers, (hydr)oxides-bound phosphorus species increased 17-28%. Phoslock®, however, reduced the clonal growth of V. denseserrulata by 35% of biomass (dry weight) and 27% of plant density. Our study indicated that Phoslock® and submerged macrophytes may complement each other in the early stage of lake restoration following external nutrient loading reduction in eutrophic lakes, potentially accelerating the restoration process, especially in those lakes where the internal phosphorus loading is high.

Effects of nFe3O4 capping on phosphorus release from sediments in a eutrophic lake

Abstract:This study applied the techniques of high-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) to explore the effects and the behind mechanism for inhibition phosphorus (P) releasing from sediments by nFe3O4 capping. The highest decreasing rates of SRP and labile P (i.e., 49% and 47%, respectively) and the decreased flux of SRP showed that nFe3O4 capping can successfully control sediment internal P release. Adsorption by Fe(III) hydroxides with the oxidation of Fe(II) was one of the reasons for the decrease of P concentrations in nFe3O4 capping sediments. This was supported by the increase of Eh and significant negative correlation between Eh with Fe(II) (soluble and labile Fe(II)) and P (SRP and labile P) and significant positive correlation between Fe(II) and P in sediments by nFe3O4 capping. An outer-sphere complex between positively charged nFe3O4 surface groups and P formation was the other reason to decrease the concentrations of P in the nFe3O4 capping sediments. This was supported by the decrease of pH value in sediments by the capping of nFe3O4. This study shows that nFe3O4, when used as capping agent, can effectively control the sediment internal P release, which is expected to be used as a potential material for repairing lake eutrophication.

Abstract:Wind-driven sediment resuspension exerts significant effects on the P behavior in shallow lake ecosystems. In this study, a comprehensive dynamic phosphorus (P) model that integrates hydrodynamic, wind wave and sediment transport is proposed to assess the importance of internal P cycling due to sediment resuspension on water column P levels. The primary contribution of the model is detailed modeling and rigorous coupling of sediment and P dynamics. The proposed model is applied to predict the P behavior in the shallow Taihu Lake, which is the third largest lake in China, and quantitatively estimate the effects of wind waves and lake currents on P release and distribution. Both the prevailing southeast winds in summer and northwest winds in winter are applied for the simulation, and different wind speeds of 5 m/s and 10 m/s are also considered. Results show that sediment resuspension and the resulting P release have a dominant effect on P levels in Taihu Lake, and likely similar shallow lakes. Wind-driven waves at higher wind speeds significantly enhance sediment resuspension and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). Total P concentration in the water column is also increased but not in proportion to the SSC. The different lake circulations resulting from the different prevailing wind directions also affect the distribution of suspended sediment and P around the lake ultimately influencing where eutrophication is likely to occur. The proposed model demonstrates that internal cycling in the lake is a dominant factor in the lake P and must be considered when trying to manage water quality in this and similar lakes. The model is used to demonstrate the potential effectiveness of remediation of an area where historical releases have led to P accumulation on overall lake quality.
Synergistic control of internal phosphorus loading from eutrophic lake sediment using MMF coupled with submerged macrophytes

Abstract:Sediment phosphorus is the main source of endogenous phosphorus for lake eutrophication. An in-situ combined technology for determination the removal effect of sediment phosphorus (P) in all fractions was first developed using the novel modified maifanite (MMF) and submerged macrophytes in this study. MMF was synthesized using an acidification process (2.5 mol/L H2SO4) and then a calcination (400 °C) method. The morphology and structure of MMF were characterized by XRD, SEM, XPS, and BET. We tested the removal effects of sediment P by MMF and submerged macrophytes in combination and separately. The results demonstrated that the synergistic removal capacity of sediment P using MMF coupled with submerged macrophytes was higher than the sum of them applied separately. MMF could promote the submerged macrophytes growth and enhance the adsorption of extra P on MMF through root oxygenation and nutrient allocation. The microcosm experiment results showed that sediment from fMMF+V. spiralis exhibited the most microbial diversity and abundance among the sediment. The combination of MMF and submerged macrophytes increased the Firmicutes abundance and decreased the Bacteroidetes. These results indicated that adsorption-biological technology can be regarded as a novel and competitive technology to the endogenous pollution control in eutrophic shallow lakes.

Abstract:The effectiveness and mechanism of hydrous zirconium oxide/magnesium hydroxide composite (MZ) to control sedimentary phosphorus (P) liberation were explored. The impacts of MZ on the microbial communities in sediment were examined. MZ displayed good phosphate adsorption performance. At pH 7, the greatest monolayer adsorption amount of phosphate onto MZ in the simultaneous presence of common ions was 67.7 mg/g, which was evidently larger than that onto hydrous zirconium oxide (39.8 mg/g). MZ addition and capping both can effectively mitigate the internal P loading from sediment to the overlying water (OW), and MZ is more suitable for use as an amendment to control internal P release to OW than magnesium hydroxide. In our study, MZ amendment and capping resulted in 94.3%-97.8% and 96.6%-99.2% reduction of soluble reactive P (SRP) in OW, respectively. The passivation of SRP, diffusion gradient in thin-film unstable P and mobile P in the upper sediment played a pivotal role in the interception of endogenous P liberation to OW by MZ. Most of P inactivated by MZ is difficult to be released in common pH and reductive environment. Although MZ addition and capping can reshape the structure of microbial communities in the surface sediment, the microbial communities in the MZ-amended and capped sediments still can exert good ecological functions related to carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and iron cycles predicted by the Functional Annotation of Prokaryotic Taxa (FAPROTAX) analysis. Our findings suggest that MZ is promising amendment and capping materials for mitigating P release from sediment in freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract:The release of phosphorus from sediment and the high concentration of phosphorus in the water environment make the water body continuously eutrophic, so it is very important to develop new phosphorus removal materials to reverse the eutrophication of river and lake. In this study, the effect and mechanism of magnetic lanthanum carbonate modified attapulgite (MT-LCMT) prepared by co-precipitation in fixed water and prime phosphorus were studied. The results showed that MT-LCMT had excellent magnetic hysteresis performance and its maximum model adsorption of phosphate could reach 51.69 mg/g. The phosphate adsorption process mainly followed the co-kinetics of intraparticle diffusion and membrane diffusion and conformed to the Redlich-Peterson model and Sips model. After five adsorption-desorption cycle experiments, MT-LCMT exhibited stable adsorption and regeneration properties, which may also be used for the removal of phosphate from actual water bodies. The experiment of exploring the factors affecting the adsorption of phosphate by MT-LCMT shows that the adsorption capacity of phosphate is the highest when the pH is between 3 and 8, and the existence of HCO 3 - , CO 3 2- and humic acid reduce the adsorption capacity of phosphate. The binding mechanism of MT-LCMT to orthophosphate involves coordination exchange, precipitation and electrostatic attraction. MT-LCMT capping can significantly reduce the risk of sediment releasing mobile phosphorus (Mobile-P), bioavailable phosphorus (BAP), overlying water dissolve reactive phosphorus (DRP) and available phosphorus with medium diffusion gradient in thin film (DGT-P) to the overlying water, and the unstable phosphorus (NH 4 Cl-P and BD-P) of surface sediment are converted into stable phosphorus (HCl-P and NaOH 85 -P). The above results indicated that MT-LCMT had a high potential to be used as an active capping material for managing phosphorus loads inside surface water bodies and substrates.

Abstract:Aquatic environment factors often influence and regulate the direction of phosphorus (P) flow at the sediment-water interface (SWI). High pH and low DO, common in eutrophic lakes, would induce large releases of P from sediment, and thus cause the negative effect on the efficiency of some P-passivators. Hence, the development of P passivators that could function over a wide range of pH condition and redox state in the overlaying water with reduced undesirable side effects is critical for the eutrophic lake remediation. In the present study, a calcium (Ca)/aluminum (Al) composite (CA) and a lanthanum (La)/Ca/Al composite (LCA) were prepared for P immobilization in lake sediments, using calcium and lanthanum coprecipitated with aluminum. CA and LCA were shown to have good P sorption performance at pH 4–11, particularly at pH 8–11. Furthermore, CA and LCA have an ability to correct the pH of water that deviates from neutral. The maximum P adsorption (Q max ) of sediment amended by 4 % CA and 4 % LCA increased by 83 % and 103 %, and their equilibrium P concentration (EPC 0 ) decreased by 76 % and 88 %, respectively. Under various pH and DO conditions, the P concentration in overlying water was significantly decreased by CA and LCA amendment, and their addition could effectively counteract the P release from sediments induced by high pH and low DO. The mechanisms of P immobilization in amended sediments under various pH and DO levels are primarily the conversion of reactive P to stable P. The P immobilization performance of CA and LCA could cope with a wide range of pH and redox conditions in eutrophic lakes, and they would help to correct extreme pH values, thus they are expected to be a new generation of commercial P-passivators.
