Abstract:A silicon ultracold neutron (UCN) detector with an area of 45 cm(2) and with a (6)LiF converter is developed at St. Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute (PNPI). The spectral efficiency of the silicon UCN detector was measured by means of a gravitational spectrometer at Institut Max von Laue - Paul Langevin (ILL). The sandwich-type detector from two silicon plates with a (6)LiF converter placed between them was also studied. Using this type of technology the UCN detector with analysis of polarization was developed and tested. The analyzing power of this detector assembly reaches up 75 % for the main part of UCN spectrum. This UCN detector with analysis of UCN polarization can be used in the new electric dipole moment (EDM) spectrometer.

Abstract:The neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) is a sensitive probe for currently undiscovered sources of charge-parity symmetry violation. As part of the TRIUMF Ultracold Advanced Neutron (TUCAN) collaboration, we are developing spin analyzers for ultracold neutrons (UCNs) to be used for a next-generation experiment to measure the neutron EDM with unprecedented precision. Spin-state analysis of UCNs constitutes an essential part of the neutron EDM measurement sequence. Magnetized iron films used as spin filters of UCNs are crucial experimental components, whose performance directly influences the statistical sensitivity of the measurement. To test such iron film spin filters, we propose the use of polarized cold-neutron reflectometry, in addition to conventional UCN transmission experiments. The new method provides information on iron film samples complementary to the UCN tests and accelerates the development cycles. We developed a collaborative effort to produce iron film spin filters and test them with cold and ultracold neutrons available at JRR-3/MINE2 and J-PARC/MLF BL05. In this article, we review the methods of neutron EDM measurements, discuss the complementarity of this new approach to test UCN spin filters, provide an overview of our related activities, and present the first results of polarized cold-neutron reflectometry recently conducted at the MINE2 beamline.

Abstract:The design and performance of the new Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer (CNCS) at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge are described. CNCS is a direct geometry inelastic time-of-flight spectrometer, designed to cover essentially the same energy and momentum transfer ranges as IN5 at ILL, LET at ISIS, DCS at NIST, TOFTOF at FRM2, AMATERAS at J-PARC, PHAROS at LANSCE and NEAT at HZB, at similar energy resolution. Measured values of key figures such as neutron flux at sample position and energy resolution are compared between measurements and ray tracing Monte Carlo simulations, and good agreement (better than 20% of absolute numbers) has been achieved. The instrument performs very well in the cold and thermal neutron energy ranges, and promises to become a workhorse for the neutron scattering community for quasielastic and inelastic scattering experiments.

Abstract:A cryogenic apparatus is described that enables a new experiment, nEDM@SNS, with a major improvement in sensitivity compared to the existing limit in the search for a neutron Electric Dipole Moment (EDM). It uses superfluid $^4$He to produce a high density of Ultra-Cold Neutrons (UCN) which are contained in a suitably coated pair of measurement cells. The experiment, to be operated at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, uses polarized $^3$He from an Atomic Beam Source injected into the superfluid $^4$He and transported to the measurement cells as a co-magnetometer. The superfluid $^4$He is also used as an insulating medium allowing significantly higher electric fields, compared to previous experiments, to be maintained across the measurement cells. These features provide an ultimate statistical uncertainty for the EDM of $2-3\times 10^{-28}$ e-cm, with anticipated systematic uncertainties below this level.

Abstract:We present a first experimental demonstration of a new method to extract a well-collimated beam of ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) from a storage vessel. Neutrons with too large divergence are not removed from the beam by an absorbing collimation, but a diffuse or semidiffuse channel with high Fermi potential reflects them back into the vessel. This avoids unnecessary losses and keeps the storage time high, which may be beneficial when the vessel is part of a UCN source with long buildup time of a high UCN density.

Abstract:Novel experimental techniques are required to make the next big leap in neutron electric dipole moment experimental sensitivity, both in terms of statistics and systematic error control. The nEDM experiment at the Spallation Neutron Source (nEDM@SNS) will implement the scheme of Golub & Lamoreaux [Phys. Rep., 237, 1 (1994)]. The unique properties of combining polarized ultracold neutrons, polarized $^3$He, and superfluid $^4$He will be exploited to provide a sensitivity to $\sim 10^{-28}\,e{\rm \,\cdot\, cm}$. Our cryogenic apparatus will deploy two small ($3\,{\rm L}$) measurement cells with a high density of ultracold neutrons produced and spin analyzed in situ. The electric field strength, precession time, magnetic shielding, and detected UCN number will all be enhanced compared to previous room temperature Ramsey measurements. Our $^3$He co-magnetometer offers unique control of systematic effects, in particular the Bloch-Siegert induced false EDM. Furthermore, there will be two distinct measurement modes: free precession and dressed spin. This will provide an important self-check of our results. Following five years of "critical component demonstration," our collaboration transitioned to a "large scale integration" phase in 2018. An overview of our measurement techniques, experimental design, and brief updates are described in these proceedings.

Abstract:The ultracold neutron (UCN) source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) provides high intensities of storable neutrons for fundamental physics experiments. The neutron velocity spectrum parallel to the beamline axis was determined by time-of-flight spectroscopy using a neutron chopper. In particular, the temporal evolution of the spectrum during neutron production and UCN storage in the source storage volume was investigated and compared to Monte Carlo simulation results. A softening of the measured spectrum from a mean velocity of 7.7(1) m s$^{-1}$ to 5.1(1) m s$^{-1}$ occurred within the first 30 s after the proton beam pulse had impinged on the spallation target. A spectral hardening was observed over longer time scales of one measurement day, consistent with the effect of surface degradation of the solid deuterium moderator.

Abstract:Ultracold neutron (UCN) storage measurements were made in a trap constructed from a 1.3-T Halbach octupole permanent (HOPE) magnet array aligned vertically, using the TES port of the PF2 source at the Institut Laue-Langevin. A mechanical UCN valve at the bottom of the trap was used for filling and emptying. This valve was covered with Fomblin grease to induce nonspecular reflections and was used in combination with a movable polyethylene UCN remover inserted from the top for cleaning of above-threshold UCNs. Loss from UCN depolarization was suppressed with a minimum 2-mT bias field. Without using the UCN remover, a total storage time constant of (712±19)s was observed; with the remover inserted for 80 s and used at either 80 cm or 65 cm from the bottom of the trap, time constants of (824±32)s and (835±36)s were observed. Combining the latter two values, a neutron lifetime of τn=(887±39)s is extracted after primarily correcting for losses at the UCN valve. The time constants of the UCN population during cleaning were observed and compared to calculations based on kinetic theory as well as Monte Carlo studies. These calculations are used to predict above-threshold populations of ∼5%,∼0.5%, and ∼10−12% remaining after cleaning in the no-remover, 80-cm remover, and 65-cm remover measurements. Thus, by using a nonspecular reflector covering the entire bottom of the trap and a remover at the top of the trap, we have established an effective cleaning procedure for removing a major systematic effect in high-precision τn experiments with magnetically stored UCNs.

Abstract:This paper describes a new magnetic trap for ultra-cold neutrons (UCNs) made from a 1.2 m long Halbach-octupole array of permanent magnets with an inner bore radius of 47 mm combined with an assembly of superconducting end coils and bias field solenoid. The use of the trap in a vertical, magneto-gravitational and a horizontal setup are compared in terms of the effective volume and ability to control key systematic effects that need to be addressed in high precision neutron lifetime measurements.

Abstract:A study of the dead layer thickness and quenching factor of a plastic scintillator for use in ultracold neutron (UCN) experiments is described. Alpha spectroscopy was used to determine the thickness of a thin surface dead layer to be 630 ± 110 nm. The relative light outputs from the decay of 241Am and Compton scattering of electrons were used to extract Birks’ law coefficient, yielding a kB value of 0.087 ± 0.003 mm/MeV, consistent with some previous reports for other polystyrene-based scintillators. The results from these measurements are incorporated into the simulation to show that an energy threshold of (∼9 keV) can be achieved for the UCNProBe experiment. This low threshold enables high beta particle detection efficiency and the indirect measurement of UCN. The ability to make the scintillator deuterated, accompanied by its relatively thin dead layer, gives rise to unique applications in a wide range of UCN experiments, where it can be used to trap UCN and detect charged particles in situ.

Abstract:The crude extract of the house dust mite, Dermatophagoides farinae, was subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis by the use of trypsin and pronase. The hydrolysate was fractionated by gel-filtration and ion-exchange chromatographies. Allergenic activities of the fractions were measured by Prausnitz-Küstner type skin test on guinea pig skin with homocytotropic antibodies. Major allergenic component passed through anion and cation Dowex resins but its yield was not large. On gel-filtration, the mite digest showed two major peaks of absorbance and the allergenic activity was found in the first one. This active peak was resolved into two active fractions when it was chromatographed on DEAE-Sephadex.

Abstract:Ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) are neutrons with energies so low they can be stored in material bottles and magnetic traps. They have been used to provide the currently most accurate experiments on the neutron life time and electric dipole moment. UCN can be produced in superfluid Helium at significantly higher densities than by other methods. The predominant production process is usually by one phonon emission which can only occur at a single incident neutron energy because of momentum and energy conservation. However UCN can also be produced by multiphonon processes. It is the purpose of this work to examine this multiphonon production of UCN. We look at several different incident neutron spectra, including cases where the multiphonon production is significant, and see how the relative importance of multiphonon production is influenced by the incident spectrum.

Abstract:In the UCN{\tau} experiment, ultracold neutrons (UCN) are confined by magnetic fields and the Earth's gravitational field. Field-trapping mitigates the problem of UCN loss on material surfaces, which caused the largest correction in prior neutron experiments using material bottles. However, the neutron dynamics in field traps differ qualitatively from those in material bottles. In the latter case, neutrons bounce off material surfaces with significant diffusivity and the population quickly reaches a static spatial distribution with a density gradient induced by the gravitational potential. In contrast, the field-confined UCN -- whose dynamics can be described by Hamiltonian mechanics -- do not exhibit the stochastic behaviors typical of an ideal gas model as observed in material bottles. In this report, we will describe our efforts to simulate UCN trapping in the UCN{\tau} magneto-gravitational trap. We compare the simulation output to the experimental results to determine the parameters of the neutron detector and the input neutron distribution. The tuned model is then used to understand the phase space evolution of neutrons observed in the UCN{\tau} experiment. We will discuss the implications of chaotic dynamics on controlling the systematic effects, such as spectral cleaning and microphonic heating, for a successful UCN lifetime experiment to reach a 0.01% level of precision.
Observing Altermagnetism using Polarized Neutrons

Abstract:Altermagnets are colinear compensated magnets whose magnetic symmetries at zero spin-orbit coupling break spin degeneracy leading to spin-split electronic and magnonic bands that reflect an underlying multipolar order. When there is an approximate $U(1)$ symmetry the magnons in altermagnets are split into equal and opposite chiral pairs. We show that in altermagnets polarized neutrons provide a means to detect the population of time-reversed domains and allow direct measurement of the magnon chirality anisotropy in momentum space -- the central signature of the altermagnetic phase. We demonstrate this response to polarized neutrons in two candidate materials MnF$_2$ and MnTe and show that the presence of these chiralities is stable to small perturbations that break spin-rotation symmetry. This provides a magnonic analogue of spin polarized ARPES that has been used to discern altermagnetism in the electronic band structures of various candidate materials.

Abstract:We report experiments on the production of ultracold neutrons (UCN) in a converter of superfluid helium coated with fluorinated grease. We employed our technique of window-free extraction of accumulated UCN from the helium, in which they were produced by downscattering neutrons of a cold beam from the Munich research reactor. The time constant for UCN passage through the same extraction aperture as in a previous experiment was a factor two shorter, despite a lower mean velocity of the accumulated UCN in the present experiments. A time-of-flight measurement of the cold neutron spectrum incident on the converter allowed us to estimate the multi-phonon contribution to the UCN production. The UCN production rate inferred from two methods agrees with the theoretical expectation.

Abstract:The neutron's permanent electric dipole moment $d_n$ is constrained to below $3\times10^{-26} e~\text{cm}$ (90% C.L.) [ <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-ex/0602020" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-ex/0602020">arXiv:hep-ex/0602020</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1509.04411" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1509.04411">arXiv:1509.04411</a> ], by experiments using ultracold neutrons (UCN). We plan to improve this limit by an order of magnitude or more with PanEDM, the first experiment exploiting the ILL's new UCN source SuperSUN. SuperSUN is expected to provide a high density of UCN with energies below 80 neV, implying extended statistical reach with respect to existing sources, for experiments that rely on long storage or spin-precession times. Systematic errors in PanEDM are strongly suppressed by passive magnetic shielding, with magnetic field and gradient drifts at the single fT level. A holding-field homogeneity on the order of $10^{-4}$ is achieved in low residual fields, via a high static damping factor and built-in coil system. No comagnetometer is needed for the first order-of-magnitude improvement in $d_n$, thanks to high magnetic stability and an assortment of sensors outside the UCN storage volumes. PanEDM will be commissioned and upgraded in parallel with SuperSUN, to take full advantage of the source's output in each phase. Commissioning is ongoing in 2019, and a new limit in the mid $10^{-27} e~\text{cm}$ range should be possible with two full reactor cycles of data in the commissioned apparatus.

Abstract:Anisotropy of atomic states is characterized by population differences and coherences between Zeeman sublevels. It can be efficiently created and probed via resonant interactions with light, the technique which is at the heart of modern atomic clocks and magnetometers. Recently, nonlinear magneto-optical techniques have been developed for selective production and detection of higher polarization moments, hexadecapole and hexacontatetrapole, in the ground states of the alkali atoms. Extension of these techniques into the range of geomagnetic fields is important for practical applications. This is because hexadecapole polarization corresponding to the $\Delta M=4$ Zeeman coherence, with maximum possible $\Delta M$ for electronic angular momentum $J=1/2$ and nuclear spin $I=3/2$, is insensitive to the nonlinear Zeeman effect (NLZ). This is of particular interest because NLZ normally leads to resonance splitting and systematic errors in atomic magnetometers. However, optical signals due to the hexadecapole moment decline sharply as a function of magnetic field. We report a novel method that allows selective creation of a macroscopic long-lived ground-state hexadecapole polarization. The immunity of the hexadecapole signal to NLZ is demonstrated with F=2 $^{87}$Rb atoms at Earth's field.

Characterization of Nuclear Magnetism at Ultralow and Zero Field using SQUIDs

Abstract:Nuclear magnetism underpins areas such as medicine in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Hyperpolarization of nuclei enhances the quantity and quality of information that can be determined from these techniques by increasing their signal to noise ratios by orders of magnitude. However, some of these hyperpolarization techniques rely on the use of low to ultralow magnetic fields (ULF) (nTs-mTs), where empirical data on how nuclear magnetism behaves is lacking. The broadband character and ultrasensitive field sensitivity of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID) allow for probing nuclear magnetism at these fields, where other magnetometers, such as Faraday coils and flux gates do not. To this end, we designed a hyperpolarization reactor to hyperpolarize [1-$^{13}$C]pyruvate with the technique, signal amplification by reversible exchange in shield enables alignment transfer to heteronuclei (SABRE-SHEATH). Afterwards, we were able to characterize the field sensitivity of our setup by simulating the filled reactor in relation to its placement in our ultralow noise, ULF MRI setup. Using the results of the simulations, we determined that our hyperpolarization setup results in a $^{13}$C polarization of 0.4%, a signal enhancement of ~100 000 000 versus the predicted thermal equilibrium signal at earth field (~50 $\mu$T). This results in a $^{13}$C signal of 7.44$\pm$0.91 pT, which with our ultralow noise setup, opens the possibility for the first direct detection of nuclear magnetism without system perturbation.

Abstract:Design considerations and initial results are presented for a new type of time-of-flight photoelectron spectrometer which is particularly suited to the study of cold metal and semiconductor cluster anions prepared in a supersonic molecular beam. The desired cluster is extracted from the molecular beam, mass-selected after an initial time-of-flight, and decelerated as it enters the photoelectron spectrometer. Photoelectrons ejected from the cluster by an ArF excimer laser are collected with >98% efficiency in an intense pulsed magnetic field of carefully controlled divergence. This divergent field parallelizes the photoelectron trajectories and maps smoothly onto a low, uniform magnetic field which guides the electrons along a 234-cm flight tube leading to a microchannel-plate detector. The strong magnetic fields and simple, open design provide excellent rejection of stray photoelectrons in a clean, ultrahigh-vacuum environment. The UPS spectrum of Si20− is given as an example.
Minimal Acquisition Time Polarized Neutron Imaging of Current Induced Magnetic Fields in Superconducting Multifilamentary YBCO Tape

Abstract:In this paper we showcase the strengths of polarized neutron imaging as a magnetic imaging technique through a case study on field-cooled multifilamentary YBCO tape carrying a transport current while containing a trapped magnetic field. The measurements were done at J-PARC's RADEN beamline, measuring a radiograph of a single polarization component, to showcase the analysis potential with minimal acquisition time. Regions of internal damage are easily and accurately identified as the technique probes the internal magnetic field of the sample, thereby avoiding surface-smearing effects. Quantitative measurements of the integrated field strength in various regions are acquired using time-of-flight information. Finally, we estimate the strength of the screening currents in the superconductor during the experiment by simulating an experiment with a model sample and comparing it to the experimental data. With this, we show that polarized neutron imaging is not only a useful tool for investigating magnetic structures but also for investigating samples carrying currents.
