Abstract:Strong wastewater from the animal breeding industry threatens the environmental and human health, while the widely used anaerobic digestion treatment is insufficient. To achieve the reclamation and reuse of the effluent containing an excessively high amount of nutrients (N, P and K) and a certain extent of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), an original CO2-enhanced natural treatment system was put forward, which was composed of trickling filter and soil-plant units installed inside an elaborate greenhouse with an elevated CO2 concentration. On the basis of previous feasibility studies, an investigation on the system's limitations and potential were carried out for further optimisation, in which red ball earth-Kentucky bluegrass column tests were conducted at the recommended CO2 concentration of 1,400 ppm for two specific scenarios, i.e. high BOD concentration and increasing hydraulic and nutrient loading rates. N is the most critical factor determining the effect and efficiency of the system, and results confirmed that, to establish a satisfactory nitrification function in the soil for N removal, adequate BOD reduction prior to land application was indispensable. Optimal operational strategies and parameters, as well as design information for scale-up, are also discussed. By means of nutrient balance approximation, the system's significant capabilities of removing and recovering waterborne nutrients are further presented, specifically complete removal of both N and P, and 8%, 18% and 18% recovery rates for N, P and K, respectively. Meanwhile, carbon balance analysis reveals its potential for substantially reducing greenhouse gas emission, as 9% of the input waterborne C is sequestrated for establishing plant biomass and maintaining greenhouse CO2 concentration at the designated level. More importantly, the above are realised in a highly profitable manner, as the value of the high-quality turf product can be an order of magnitude higher than the cost for system operation and maintenance. This original system provides an innovative way for rural communities worldwide to achieve sustainable development via wastewater reclamation and reuse.

Abstract:In order to improve nitrogen removal for rural wastewater, a novel two-stage hybrid system, consisting of a vertical flow trickling filter (VFTF) and a horizontal flow multi-soil-layering (HFMSL) bioreactor was developed. The performance of the apparatus was observed under various carbon-nitrogen ratios and water spraying frequencies separately. The maximum removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN) for the hybrid system was 92.8% while the removal rates of CODCr, ammonium (NH4(+)-N), and total phosphorus (TP) were 94.1%, 96.1%, 92.0% respectively, and the corresponding effluent concentrations were 3.61, 21.20, 1.91, and 0.33 mg L(-1). The horizontal flow mode for MSL led the system to denitrifying satisfactorily as it ensured relatively long hydraulic retention time (HRT), ideal anoxic condition and adequate organic substrates supply. Also, higher water spraying frequency benefited intermittent feeding system for pollutants removal. Shock loading test indicated that the hybrid system could operate well even at hydraulic shock loadings.

Abstract:Wastewaters from farm and composting operations are often rich in select nutrients that potentially can be reutilized in crop production. Liners of silverleaf dogwood (Cornus alba L. 'Argenteo-marginata'), common ninebark [Physocarpus opulifolius (L.) Maxim.], and Anthony Waterer spirea (Spiraeaxbumalda Burvénich 'Anthony Waterer') were grown in 6L containers filled with a bark-based commercial mix. Plants were fertigated daily via a computer-controlled multi-fertilizer injector with three recirculated fertilizer treatments: (1) a stock (control) solution with complete macro- and micro-nutrients, electrical conductivity (EC) 2.2 dS m(-1); (2) wastewater from a mushroom farm; and (3) process wastewater from anaerobic digestion of municipal solid waste. The wastewaters used in both treatments 2 and 3 were diluted with tap water, and the computer was programmed to amend, dispense and recirculate nutrients based on the same target EC as in treatment 1. For comparison, there was a traditional controlled-release fertilizer treatment [Nutryon 17-5-12 (17N-2P-10K) plus micro-nutrients topdressed at a rate of 39 g/plant, nutrients not recirculated]. All three species responded similarly to the three recirculated fertilizer treatments. Growth with the recirculated treatments was similar and significantly higher than that obtained with controlled-release fertilizer. Throughout the study, the EC measured in wastewater-derived nutrient solutions, and also in the container substrate, were similar or close to those of the control treatment, although there were small to large differences among individual major nutrients. There was no sign of nutrient deficiency or toxicity symptoms to the plants. Small to moderate excesses in concentrations of SO(4), Na, and/or Cl were physiologically tolerable to the species.
Performance of Integrated Ecological Treatment System for Decentralized Rural Wastewater and Significance of Plant Harvest Management

Abstract:A full-scale integrated ecological treatment system (IETS) comprising, in series from inlet to outlet: two biofilters, one surface flow wetland (SFW), and two stabilization ponds, was constructed to treat rural decentralized domestic sewage and swine wastewater. The results showed the IETS had high removal efficiencies for ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) with average values of 95.7%, 93.0%, 94.6%, and 82.0%, respectively. Incorporation in the IETS of the SFW, vegetated with Myriophyllum aquaticum, was found essential in enhancing the wastewater treatment. The abundances of the amoA gene of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) within the SFW sediment ranged from 1.69 x 10(8) to 2.46 x 10(9) copies g(-1) and from 2.63 x 10(7) to 6.90 x 10(7) copies g(-1) dry sediment, respectively. The greatest AOA and AOB abundances, which were observed at the outlet of the SFW, were found to be related to the decreasing NH4+-N concentrations along the water flow path. The abundance of the narG gene was approximately two orders of magnitude greater than that of nosZ. Multiple harvests of M. aquaticum contributed to 23.7-33.7% of TN removal and 34.2-49.5% of TP removal in the SFW. A plant management practice with a harvesting frequency of once every 20 days yielded the largest amounts of plant biomass and nutrient uptakes. These findings indicated that the vegetation of fast-growing macrophytes such as M. aquaticum in IETS was demonstrated to be an effective way for increasing plant uptake of N and P and enhancing microbial nitrogen-transforming activities, which contributed to improve IETS performance in decentralized rural wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this study, an integrated treatment system was proposed and applied in situ, including detention tank, multistage constructed wetlands (CWs) and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), preventing nutrients flowing into Dianchi Lake, in which the treatment performance of multistage CWs were evaluated principally. Results skillfully realized the bypass purification of upstream river at dry reasons, as well as the effective management and treatment of the collected diffuse pollution at rainy reasons. The purified water flowing into water bodies could satisfy the Grade III of environmental quality standards for surface water in China with the average effluent concentrations of COD, NH4+-N, TN and TP decreased to 10 (51.2-72.7%), 0.5 (67.2-83.0%), 1.0 (71.2-79.6%) and 0.15 (72.3-89.4%) mg L-1, respectively. High-throughput sequencing results indicated that the application of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-cohyroxyvelate-sawdust (PS) blends could enrich norank_f_Anaerolineaceae (7.95%) and Bradyrhizobium (10.2%), which were distinct from the dominant genera of Pleurocapsa (13.0%) in gravel-based CWs. Functional genes and metabolism analysis uncovered that the heterotrophic denitrification was the main pathway of nitrogen removal with the abundance of genes encoding TCA cycle, glycolysis and denitrification process up-regulated. In addition, molecular ecological network (MEN) analysis suggested the denitrification genes were positively correlated with the predominant microbes in PS-based CWs, favorable for denitrifiers to transfer and utilize electron donors during denitrification process. This study proved that the developed PS blends as carbon supplies in CWs and the proposed integrated treatment system are effective methods for watershed management, providing valuable reference to low-pollution wastewater treatment in practical engineering projects.

Abstract:In this work, two deep subsurface wastewater infiltration systems (SWISs) were constructed and fed with domestic sewage (control system, S1) and mixed wastewater consisting of old landfill leachate and domestic sewage (experimental system, S2). S1 and S2 exhibited favorable removal efficiencies, with TP (98.8%, 98.7%), COD (87.6%, 86.9%), NH4+-N (99.8%, 99.9%) and TN (99.2%, 98.9%). Even when increasing the pollutant load in S2 by adding old landfill leachate, the almost complete removal performance could be maintained in terms of low effluent concentrations and even increased in terms of load removal capabilities, which included COD (19.4, 25.9 g·m-2·d-1), NH4+-N (8.2, 19.9 g·m-2·d-1), TN (8.9, 20.6 g·m-2·d-1). To investigate the transformation of dissolved organic matter along depth, Three-Dimensional Excitation Emission Matrix fluorescence spectroscopy combined with Fluorescence Regional Integration analysis was applied. The results showed that PI,n and PII,n (the proportions of biodegradable fractions) increased gradually from 6.59% and 21.8% at S2_20 to 10.8% and 27.7% at S2_110, but PIII,n and PV,n (the proportions of refractory organics) declined from 23.1% and 27.8% at S2_20 to 21.1% and 16.4% at S2_110, respectively. In addition, high-throughput sequencing technology was employed to observe the bacterial community at different depths, and the predicted functional potential of the bacterial community was analyzed by PICRUSt. The results showed that the genera Flavobacterium, Pseudomonas, Vogesella, Acinetobacter and Aquabacterium might be responsible for refractory organic degradation and that their products might serve as the carbon source for denitrifiers to achieve simultaneous nitrate and refractory organic removal. PICRUSt further demonstrated that there was a mutual response between refractory organic degradation and denitrification. Overall, the combined treatment of domestic sewage and old leachate in rural areas by SWIS is a promising approach to achieve comprehensive treatment.

Abstract:Decentralized treatment of wastewater in rural areas usually has several challenges, which include large fluctuations in pollutant concentration and water quantity, complicated operation and maintenance of conventional biochemical treatment equipment, resulting in poor stability and a low compliance rate of the wastewater treatment process. In order to solve the above problems, a new integration reactor is designed, which uses gravity and aeration tail gas self-reflux technology to realize the reflux of sludge and the nitrification liquid, respectively. The feasibility and operation characteristics of its application for decentralized wastewater treatment in rural areas are explored. The results demonstrated that, under constant influent, the device showed strong tolerance to the shock of pollutant load. The chemical oxygen demand, NH4+-N, total nitrogen and total phosphorus fluctuated in the ranges of 95-715 mg/L, 7.6-38.5 mg/L, 9.32-40.3 mg/L and 0.84-4.9 mg/L, respectively. The corresponding effluent compliance rates were 82.1%, 92.8%, 96.4% and 96.3%, respectively. When the wastewater discharge was non-constant and the maximum single-day Qmax/Qmin reached 5, all indicators of the effluent met the relevant discharge standard. The integrated device also demonstrated high phosphorus enrichment levels in its anaerobic zone; the concentration of phosphorus reached a maximum of 26.9 mg/L, which created a good environment for phosphorus removal. The microbial community analysis showed that sludge digestion, denitrification, and phosphorus-accumulating bacteria all played an important role in pollutant treatment.

Abstract:A two-stage multi-soil-layering system with blended carbon sources (MSL–BCS) was constructed at pilot scale for treatment of rural non-point source wastewater. Results showed the MSL–BCS system had effective removal efficiencies with 64% of TN and 60% of TP, respectively. The addition of BCS could result in higher (1.6–3.1 fold) denitrification gene abundances (nirS and nosZ) for enhancing denitrification. High-throughput sequencing approach revealed that the higher abundance (>50%) of Epsilonbacteraeotra (Genus: Sulfuricurvum, Family: Thiovulaceae, Class: Campylobacteria, Phylum: Epsilonbacteraeota) enriched in the surface of BCS, which suggested that Epsilonbacteraeotra are the keystone species in achieving nitrogen removal through enhancing denitrification at oligotrophic level. KEGG analysis indicated that BCS might release some signaling molecules for enhancing the energy metabolism process, as well as stimulate the enzyme activities of histidine kinase, glycogen phosphorylase and ATPase, and thereby the denitrification processes were strengthened in MSL-BCS system. Consequently, this study could provide some valuable information on the removal performance and mechanism of engineering MSL systems packed with BCS to govern the rural wastewater treatment.
An anoxic-aerobic system combined with integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland to highly enhance simultaneous organics and nutrients removal in rural China

Abstract:The biggest problem in the treatment of rural domestic sewage is that the existing treatment projects require the big investment and the high operation and maintenance costs. To overcome this problem, cost-effective, low-consuming, resource-recovering and easy-maintenance technologies are urgently demanded. To this end, a novel anoxic-aerobic system combined with integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland (IVFCW) with source separation was proposed for treating rural sewage in this study. The anoxic-aerobic system contained the anoxic filter (ANF), two-stage waterwheel driving rotating biological contactors (ts-WDRBCs). Key parameters of ts-WDRBCs were identified to be 0.6 m drop height and 4 r/min rotational speed found on oxygenated clean water experiments. Then, the optimal operating parameters were determined to be 200% reflux ratio and 3 h hydraulic retention time of ts-WDRBCs. During the 80-day operation, 91.58 ± 1.86% COD, 96.17 ± 0.92% NH4+-N, 82.71 ± 3.92% TN and 92.28 ± 2.78% TP were removed under the optimal operating parameters. Compared with other treatment technologies, this combined bio-ecological system could achieve the higher simultaneous organics and nutrients removal. The effluent NO3--N/NH4+-N concentration ratio of ts-WDRBCs was 2.15 ± 0.54, which was proved to be beneficial for plants growth. The microbial communities coexisted in each section ensured the desired removal performance of combined bio-ecological system. Summarily, high performance together with low investment costs and cheap operation costs are characteristics that make this system a promising and competitive alternative for rural sewage treatment.
Development of an Advanced Biological Treatment System Using Bioaugmentation Technology for the Treatment of Eutrophic Drinking Water Resources

Abstract:Drinking water supplies around the world are increasingly at risk from eutrophication. However, many of the technologies developed in the laboratory to control water eutrophication have not been successfully applied in situ. To explore an in situ water treatment strategy for treating eutrophic drinking water resources, a laboratory system simulating a real river way was designed and used to treat raw eutrophic drinking water. The system included several removable modules and bioaugmentation technology to ensure the formation and maintenance of the biofilm, and enhance treatment efficiency. During operation of the system, the biofilm was successfully formed and maintained under a continuous hydraulic shock loading up to 14.4 m(3) m(-2) d(-1), and the average removal rates of chlorophyll a, TN, and TP were 83.85, 53.44 and 70.78%, respectively. The biofilm had a high phosphorus storage capacity, even when phosphorus loading increased to 15-20 mg/L, the removal was constant at around 10 mg/L. Moreover, PCR-DGGE analysis demonstrated that the bioaugmented bacteria, including Flavobacterium and Pseudomonas, successfully colonized the biofilm inside the system. Furthermore, the original community of microorganisms from the raw drinking water was maintained, which is an important aspect of the in situ treatment process. In conclusion, this strategy successfully treated raw eutrophic drinking water in the simulated river way. Its efficacy, low operation cost and application to water safety make this system a promising prospect for controlling eutrophication of drinking water resources.
Treatment of decentralized low-strength livestock wastewater using microcurrent-assisted multi-soil-layering systems: performance assessment and microbial analysis

Abstract:Discharge of decentralized livestock wastewater without effective treatment has become a common problem in rural areas, threatening the regional water environment. A new microcurrent-assisted multi-soil-layering (MSL) system was developed for treating rural decentralized livestock wastewater. The results showed the highest removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total phosphorus (TP) in MSL systems reached 95.45% and 92.0%, respectively. The removal rate of total nitrogen (TN) in MSL systems ranged from 60 to 75%. The bacterial diversity changes among MSL systems showed that high-level height of bottom submergence had a positive effect on the abundance of denitrifying bacteria, while low-level height of bottom submergence had a positive impact on the abundance of nitrifying bacteria. The effect of low-level external voltage on bacterial abundance was better than that of high-level external voltage. Both high- and low-level influent C/N ratios had no significant effect on bacterial abundance. The metabolism and activity of microorganisms were promoted with microcurrent stimulation from the perspective of increased bacterial abundance in MSL systems with improved treatment performance.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants play a crucial role in water security and sanitation, ensuring ecosystems balance and avoiding significant negative effects on humans and environment. However, they determine also negative pressures, including greenhouse gas and odourous emissions, which should be minimized to mitigate climate changes besides avoiding complaints. The research has been focused on the validation of an innovative integrated biological system for the sustainable treatment of complex gaseous emissions from wastewater treatment plants. The proposed system consists of a moving bed biofilm reactor coupled with an algal photobioreactor, with the dual objective of: i) reducing the inlet concentration of the odourous contaminants (in this case, hydrogen sulphide, toluene and p-xylene); ii) capturing and converting the carbon dioxide emissions produced by the degradation process into exploitable algal biomass. The first reactor promoted the degradation of chemical compounds up to 99.57% for an inlet load (IL) of 22.97 g m −3 d −1 while the second allowed the capture of the CO2 resulting from the degradation of gaseous compounds, with biofixation rate up to 81.55%. The absorbed CO2 was converted in valuable feedstocks, with a maximum algal biomass productivity in aPBR of 0.22 g L −1 d −1 . Dairy wastewater has been used as alternative nutrient source for both reactors, with a view of reusing wastewater while cultivating biomass, framing the proposed technology in a context of a biorefinery within a circular economy perspective. The biomass produced in the algal photobioreactor was indeed characterized by a high lipid content, with a maximum percentage of lipids per dry weight biomass of 35%. The biomass can therefore be exploited for the production of alternative and clean energy carrier. The proposed biotechnology represents an effective tool for shifiting the conventional plants in carbon neutral platform for implementing principles of ecological transition while achieving high levels of environmental protection.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to find a feasible method for the treatment of solid waste generated in the remote rural, where the transportation costs are prohibitive and the resources to construct and maintain conventional treatment plants are not available. This process, consisted of two types of simulated bioreactor landfill (one was recirculated bioreactor landfill, and the other was comprised of fresh and aged refuse reactor) and a soil infiltration system, was operated in ambient temperature for 180days all together. After treated by the system of fresh and aged refuse reactor, the refuse and leachate reached a strongly degraded and stable state. The remaining leachate can be treated by the soil infiltration system, and 87.5±2.1%, 98.6±1.0% and 95.7±1.7% were achieved by 60cm soil depths for organic matter, ammonium nitrogen and total nitrogen removal, respectively.
Nitrogen removal efficiency and mechanisms of an improved anaerobic-anoxic-oxic system for decentralized sewage treatment

Abstract:The unstable operation and poor effluent quality often associated with decentralized sewage treatment systems due to fluctuating water flows have garnered significant attention. In this study, a novel integrated process combining anoxic denitrification and simultaneous nitrification and denitrification was developed to address these challenges. The improved anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic system achieved average effluent concentrations of 20.83 mg/L and 4.63 mg/L for chemical oxygen demand and NH4+-N, with average removal rates of 91 % and 68 %, respectively. Moreover, the aerobic zone demonstrated an impressive efficiency of 40.8 % for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. The key bacteria groups driving the system's performance were heterotrophic and aerobic nitrifying bacteria, which dominated the microbial populations. Overall, the system optimizes the traditional anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic process, providing an effective solution for fluctuating wastewater flows. A Field Study of Advanced Municipal Wastewater Treatment Technology for Artificial Groundwater Recharge

Abstract:Field studies were conducted to investigate the advanced treatment of the municipal secondary effluent and a subsequent artificial groundwater recharge at Gaobeidian Wastewater Treatment Plant, Beijing. To improve the secondary effluent quality, the combined process of powdered activated carbon adsorption, flocculation and rapid sand filtration was applied, which could remove about 40% dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and 70% adsorbable organic halogens. The results of liquid size exclusion chromatography indicate that in the adsorption unit the removed organic fraction was mainly low molecular weight compounds. The fractions removed by the flocculation unit were polysaccharides and high molecular weight compounds. The retention of water in summer in the open recharge basins resulted in a growth of algae. Consequently, DOC increased in the polysaccharide and high molecular weight humic substances fraction. The majority of the DOC removal during soil passage took place in the unsaturated area. A limited reduction of DOC was observed in the aquifer zone.

Abstract:The management of domestic wastewater in rural areas has always been challenging due to characteristics such as the wide distribution and dispersion of rural households. There are numerous domestic sewage discharge methods used in rural areas, and it is difficult to treat the sewage. To address this problem, decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DWTSs) have been installed around the globe to reuse and recycle wastewater for non-potable uses such as firefighting, toilet flushing, and landscape irrigation. This study compares the currently implemented treatment processes by investigating them from the point of view of their performance and their advantages and disadvantages to provide new ideas for the development of rural wastewater treatment technologies. According to conventional treatment technologies including activated sludge (OD, A/O, A/A/O, SBR), biofilm (biofilter, MBBR, biological contact oxidation, biofluidized bed) and biogas digesters, natural biological treatment technologies including artificial wetlands (surface flow, vertical flow, horizontal submerged flow artificial wetlands), soil percolation systems (slow, fast, subsurface percolation and surface diffusion) and stabilization pond technology and combined treatment technologies are categorized and further described.

Abstract:In southern China, the inflow of water to wastewater treatment plants has a lower concentration of organic matter. This causes treatment plants to face issues in the denitrification and phosphorus removal processes such as deficient carbon sources, high energy consumption, and unstable nitrogen removal. To resolve these issues, we propose the reconstruction of the internal reflux port, improvement of the internal reflux ratio to 200%, the addition of carbon source to anoxic zone, and the addition of phosphorus removal agents in secondary settling tank. The results of study show significantly improved efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus removal, which ensures the stability of subsequent supply of reused water.

Study into a land infiltration system for treating night soil sewage

Abstract:In this study, a land infiltration system with an area of 570 m 2 and a treatment ability of 15 m 3/d was constructed near a public lavatory, with the objective of treating the night soil sewage and to enhance the TN (Total Nitrogen) removal with biological denitrification. It was observed that the land infiltration system is efficient and economic in treating the night soil sewage. The oxidative condition of the medium was enough for ammonia removal, which is favorable for the biological nitrification process; and the high influent COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) concentration in the present treatment is favorable for biological denitrification process. The average COD, SS(Suspended solids), NH 3-N (Ammonium nitrate) and TP (Total Phosphate) of the influent were 530.0 mg/L, 94.5 mg/L, 136.1 mg/L and 8.10 mg/L, respectively. After the treatment, the average COD, SS, NH 3-N and TP of the effluent reduced to 49.7 mg/L, 8.0 mg/L, 16.4 mg/L and 0.39 mg/L, respectively, which meets the standard for urban miscellaneous water consumption in China. The energy consumption was 0.03 USD/m3, which is relatively low and the system is easy to operate and maintain. After sterilization, the effluent was reused in washing toilets. Sludge generated in the septic tank and anaerobic tank were applied to farmland as fertilizer, and grass cut from the land were fed to the fishes in the pond nearby. Therefore, it is an eco-system in which no wastes are discharged and all substances are recycled. © IJIB, All rights reserved.

Abstract:Abstract Wastewater ecological soil infiltration system (WESIS) is a land treatment technology for decentralized wastewater treatment that has been applied all over the world. In this study, the pollutant removal, emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and functional gene abundances with different influent C/N ratios were evaluated in WESISs with/without intermittent aeration. Intermittent aeration and influent C/N ratio affect pollutant removal and GHG emission. Increased influent C/N ratio led to high total nitrogen (TN) removal, low CH4 and N2O emission in the aerated WESIS, which was different from the non-aerated WESIS. High average removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) (94.8%), NH4+-N (95.1%), TN (91.2%), total phosphorus (TP) (91.1%) and low emission rates for CH4 (27.2 mg/(m2 d)) and N2O (10.5 mg/(m2 d)) were achieved with an influent C/N ratio of 12:1 in the aerated WESIS. Intermittent aeration enhanced the abundances of bacterial 16S rRNA, amoA, nxrA, narG, napA, nirK, nirS, qnorB, nosZ genes and decreased the abundances of the mcrA gene, which are involved in pollutant removal and GHG emission. Intermittent aeration would be an effective alternative to achieving high pollutant removal and low CH4 and N2O emission in high influent C/N ratio wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Abstract Coal preparation solid waste, which is a major environmental issue for coal-producing areas in China, may be microbiologically digested and transformed into a product suitable as a soil amendment to increase soil organic matter content and prevent and enhance plant/crop growth. Coal preparation waste collected from a coal sorting plant in Inner Mongolia, China was digested in bioreactors inoculated with microbial enrichments prepared from activated sludge and cow manure. The effluent solids from the coal preparation waste bioreactors were analyzed for their suitability as organic soil amendments, which complied with China standards. Plant growth tests were conducted in sandy soil from a semi-arid region in Colorado, which was amended with the effluent solids. Kentucky bluegrass ( Poa pratensis L.) and chives ( Allium schoenoprasum ) were used as the representative plants for the growth tests, where results indicated substantially higher yields of Kentucky bluegrass and chives for the sandy soils amended with the effluent solids when compared to a commercial organic fertilizer. The number and average length of Kentucky bluegrass shoots were 10 and 5.1 times higher, respectively, in soils amended with the effluent solids. Similarly, the number and average length of chives shoots were 10 and 1.7 times higher, respectively, in soils amended with the effluent solids. Overall, the microbial digestion of coal preparation waste for application as an organic soil amendment is a viable alternative and beneficial use of coal preparation solid waste.
