Abstract:Sewage sludge is an inevitable byproduct from municipal wastewater treatment processes and conversion of sewage sludge into high value-added biochar is an effective strategy for resource utilization of sewage sludge. The characterization on P speciation is important to control the practical applications and environmental behavior of the sewage sludge and its derived biochar. The mobility and bioavailability of P is closely related to its speciation, but knowledge gap in P speciation is still existed which needs to be narrowed by a systematic study including existing experimental methods and techniques as well as theoretical prediction. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of P speciation, this study conducted a series of research combining conventional fractionation of P with consideration of major concomitant elements (Al, Ca, Fe), advanced analytical techniques (solution and solid-state 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD)), and theoretical simulation with respect to solubility of major elements in different acid-base extractants. Results showed that Ca and Fe were dominantly extracted by HCl whereas P and Al were both NaOH- and HCl-soluble. Inorganic orthophosphates were detected as predominant molecular configurations of P from solution 31P NMR spectra, while the existence of calcium and aluminum orthophosphates was revealed by solid-state 31P NMR. Moreover, the poor-crystalline AlPO4 mineral was further evidenced by XRD patterns of the sewage sludge and biochar. Finally, a theoretical simulation of P-containing minerals was performed on the basis of results above, which suggested the existence of variscite/berlinite and amorphous Ca3(PO4)2 in the sludge and biochar. This study does not only explore the P speciation in the sewage sludge and its derived biochar, but also provides a methodology for further research on P speciation. Through the intensive study on the environmental behavior of P, this work might further contribute to the fundamental knowledge basis for the recycle of P during integrate waste management.

Targeting Phosphorus Transformation to Hydroxyapatite Through Sewage Sludge Pyrolysis Boosted by Quicklime Toward Phosphorus Fertilizer Alternative with Toxic Metals Compromised

Abstract:Advancing pyrolysis practice for phosphorus (P) recovery and recycling from sewage sludge arouses intensive research interests due to the forthcoming threat of global P sustainability. However, how to both in situ manipulate P targeted transformation to a designed form and accommodate downstream use while compromise adverse impacts of concomitant toxic metals (TMs) challenges the worldwide initiative of P reclamation from sewage sludge. Here, a P targeted transformation to hydroxyapatite (P2tHAP) technique to bridge the discrepancy of P recovery and subsequent use was developed. Through manipulating calcium-to-P molar ratio (Ca/P) of sludge feedstock by calcium oxide, the sludge P can be targetedly transformed to HAP during pyrolysis, a bioavailable form delivered as sewage sludge char-derived phosphorus fertilizer (SCPF). The P supply competency of the SCPF for Ca/P below or above 1.67 with a risk abatement of TMs was comparable to conventional P fertilizer, while the Ca/P = 1.67 was prone to the occurrence of sludge ash sintering, detrimental to the HAP formation. The lowered bioavailability of TMs was orchestrated by the root-secreted oxalic acid, due to the triggered phosphate starvation response. The random forest analysis indicated the driving force in the evolution of rhizobacterial communities, dominantly arising from those TMs after the SCPF soil application. Thermodynamic and kinetic calculations validated that HAP with the stable molar Gibbs energy gHAP (similar to - 7.23 x 10(3) kJ/mol) underpinned the progress of P2tHAP during sludge pyrolysis. The outcome prospects to propel the integrative design of an innovative reclamation of P-rich wastes and simultaneous compromise of concomitant contaminants.
Hydrothermal Conversion of Dewatered Sewage Sludge: Focusing on the Transformation Mechanism and Recovery of Phosphorus.

Abstract:The recovery of phosphorus from sewage sludge was critical due to the depletion of phosphate ore. The present research aims to identify the phosphorus speciation and reveal the phosphorus transformation mechanism of dewatered sewage sludge during hydrothermal conversion (HTC) process, as well as to achieve the high efficiency recovery of phosphorus. Multiple analysis of SMT method, VK diagram, XANES and NMR showed that most phosphorus (>80%) was transferred to the hydrochar and presented as inorganic phosphorus (IP) after the HTC process. A dehydration trend was observed of the HTC process with the increase of sub-critical temperature. Ca-associated phosphorus increased significantly as the temperature increased. The Pyro-P gradually transformed to Ortho-P with the increase of HTC temperature and disappeared at 320 degrees C. The addition of HCI (6.13 and 12.3 mmol/g) in the HTC process resulted in a high percentage (>80%) of phosphorus transferred to the aqueous phase, and the bioavailability of the residual phosphorus increased significantly. The recovery rate of phosphorus could achieve 98.37% at the pH of 7.52, with the struvite purity of 90.41%. The results of this study provide new insights into the selective transfer of phosphorus in dewatered sludge by HTC process, in addition to some efficient ways for the utilisation of the HTC products. Abstract:Hydrothermal treatment (HT) is an emerging technique for sustainable sewage sludge management and resource recovery. Many sludges are rich in iron (Fe) due to the common addition of Fe salts in water resource recovery facilities. To develop guidance for reaction conditions targeting nutrient recovery, this study systematically investigated the influence of HT temperature, treatment time, and sludge source on the dynamic speciation evolution of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) during HT of Fe-rich sewage sludge. Complementary chemical extraction and X-ray spectroscopy analyses were conducted to characterize the treatment products. For the sludge mixture (a blend of primary and waste activated sludges), P speciation did not change significantly within 4.5 h at 125 °C HT, while soluble and labile P was converted into insoluble P over time at 175 and 225 °C HT. Strengite (FePO4·2H2O) preferentially formed in the hydrochars with increasing treatment temperature and/or time, whereas 125 °C HT within 1.5 h favored the formation of vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O). Organic P was completely decomposed into orthophosphate when the HT temperature reached up to 175 °C. Pyrrole-N was enriched in the hydrochars. Similar reaction pathways were observed during HT of anaerobically digested sludge, though some minor differences in Fe-associated P and organic P were observed. Meanwhile, HT of the two sludges released orthophosphate and ammonia into the process waters at 175 and 225 °C, which can be recovered by a sequential process involving struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) precipitation and air stripping. Abstract:Anaerobic digestion (AD) with hydrothermal (HT) pretreatment is an emerging technology for enhanced resource recovery from sewage sludge. This study investigates the speciation of Fe, P, and S during sequential HT–AD treatment of sewage sludge using sequential chemical extraction, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Results suggest strong correlations between Fe and P species as well as Fe and S species, affecting the solubility and bioavailability of each other. For instance, much vivianite formed in the hydrochars after HT treatment at low temperature, while more strengite precipitated at higher HT temperature. During the subsequent AD process, microbial reduction of strengite and other Fe(III) species led to the formation of more vivianite, with concurrent P release into the solution and adsorption onto other minerals. HT pretreatment of sewage sludge had a weak effect on the sulfidation of Fe during the AD process. This work has important implications for understanding the nutrient speciation and availability in sludge-derived hydrochars and AD solids. Abstract:This study systematically evaluated phosphorus (P) solubilization from pyrochar and hydrochar derived from both raw sludge and iron-rich sludge. The data indicated, that an increase in thermal treatment temperature and the presence of iron promoted the accumulation of P in both pyrochar (derived at 300, 500, and 800 °C) and hydrochar (derived at 100, 200, and 280 °C). After incubating pyrochar and hydrochar with a phosphate solubilizing microorganism (PSM) (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) for 30 days, PSM significantly promoted the solubilization of P in pyrochar and hydrochar synthesized at low temperatures rather than those at high temperatures, with a 59 % increase for the pyrolysis of raw sludge at 300 °C than that pyrolyzed at 800 °C and a 62 % increase for the hydrothermal treatment of raw sludge at 100 °C than that treated at 280 °C. And the phenomena were more obvious on the char samples derived from iron-rich sludge. The mass balance of different P species in the solid and liquid phases indicated that after incubating with PSM for 30 days, NaOH-P was the main P solubilized from the solid phase of pyrochar and HCl-P was the main P solubilized from the solid phase of hydrochar. Considering P availability to plants, the preliminary economic analysis indicated that the hydrothermal treatment of iron-rich sludge at 100 °C showed the highest economic benefits for P recovery, with the net cost of 28.79 USD/ton wet sludge. This study was useful in giving novel insights into the reuse of char samples as P fertilizer, and also suggested the importance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other bacteria in sludge application, particularly in terms of P solubilization.

Abstract:Pyrolysis of sewage sludge (SS) to SS biochars (SBCs) is a promising method for maximizing the utilization of phosphorus (P) in SS. A comprehensive understanding of P distribution and transformation in SS and SBCs is fundamental for the recycling of P from these materials as a soil amendment. Most studies have focused on P itself in SS and SBCs, without examining the changes of closely related metals (e.g., Al, Ca, Fe and Mg) that are typically co-extracted with P. Thus, in this study, a series of investigations were performed in which an improved Hedley sequential extraction method of P was used together with advanced analytical techniques to determine the distribution and transformation of P in SS and SBCs. Increasing the pyrolysis temperature increased concentrations of total P and inorganic P in SS and SBCs. In addition, P and Al species in SS and SBCs were predominantly sodium hydroxide-soluble species—denoted NaOH-Al and NaOH-P—and increasing the pyrolysis temperature increased their concentrations in SBCs, especially for NaOH-Al, from 28.35 ± 2.56 mg/g to 38.18 ± 3.29 mg/g. Ca, Mg and Fe were predominantly extracted by HCl solution, showing that HCl-extracted P comprised not only Ca-P but also Fe-P, Mg-P and Al-P. Spectroscopic analyses revealed that the concentration of hydroxyapatite (HAp) in SS and SBCs increased with the pyrolysis temperature, and Al-P was the dominant species in both SS and SBCs. Thus the pyrolysis of SS affords SBCs that are a relatively stable pool of P for plants, enabling SBCs to serve as a slow-release P fertilizer in soil. These findings further contribute to fundamental knowledge on the recycling of P during integrated waste management.

Abstract:Due to the global shortage of phosphate ore, sewage sludge is an important resource for P recovery. This study aims to investigate how P was migrated and transformed during the microwave hydrothermal (MHT) process of sewage sludge. The effects of MHT and hydrothermal (HT) conversion were compared. The results reveals that there were no significant differences on the P distribution and speciation changes between the HT and MHT products, especially under high hydrothermal temperature. Ortho-P/Pyro-P was the dominant P form in the hydrothermal solid products, and high temperature promoted the transformation of C-O-P to Ortho-P/Pyro-P. The analysis of X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) shows that Ca5(PO4)3OH was formed after the hydrothermal processes. The relative abundance of Ca-P decreased first and then increased with increasing hydrothermal temperature. Moderate MHT temperature (170 °C) and holding time (30-60 min) promoted the transformation of P to the liquid products. Generally, the effect of MHT temperature was more significant than that of heating type and holding time on the variations of P distribution and speciations.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion (AD) with interstage hydrothermal treatment (HT) (i.e., AD–HT–AD) is an emerging technology for energy and nutrient recovery from sewage sludge. Yet, systematic understanding on the speciation evolution of nutrient phosphorus (P) and other redox-sensitive elements iron (Fe) and sulfur (S) during AD–HT–AD is still missing. This study investigated the coupled changes of P, Fe, and S speciation during AD–HT–AD of sewage sludge using complementary chemical extraction, microscopy, and spectroscopy analyses. Results indicated that after the first-stage AD a significant fraction of Fe was present as vivianite in the AD solids due to the microbial reduction of strengite and other Fe(III) species. During HT of the anaerobically digested solids, less vivianite but more strengite formed in the HT hydrochars with increasing HT temperature. Partial auto-oxidation of vivianite by H2O at high HT temperatures (155 and 185 °C) induced the formation of strengite. For the second-stage AD, more vivianite formed in AD solids as compared to that in their corresponding hydrochars from higher HT temperatures (155 and 185 °C). Regarding S speciation, both AD stages and HT favored the formation of iron sulfides. Results from this study suggest that the cycling of both P and S is strongly coupled with Fe chemistry. Abstract:This study investigated migration and transformation mechanism of P in waste activated sludge (WAS) during anaerobic fermentation (AF) process and the subsequent hydrothermal conversion (HTC) process. Control of pH during the AF processes was found to be significant, whereby the use of acidic (pH = 5.5) or alkaline conditions (pH = 9.5) facilitated the release of either apatite phosphorus (AP) or non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (NAIP) and organic phosphorus, respectively. At the same pH of 9.5, NaOH promoted the transfer of P into liquid phase, and P in the solid phase was mainly in the form of NAIP. In contrast, Ca(OH)2 enhanced the incorporation of P into the solid products, with the P mainly in the form of AP. The subsequent HTC process promoted the NAIP transferred to AP, and the bioavailability of P in the HTC solid products was decreased. The P K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis provided detailed information about the phosphates. It demonstrated that the conversion of Ca8H2PO4·6.5H2O to Ca5(PO4)3·OH was facilitated by HTC under the alkaline condition. This study sheds lights on transformation mechanism of P speciations during AF and HTC processes, which would provide fundamental information for effective utilization of P in bio-wastes.

Abstract:Thermal treatments of phosphorus (P)-rich sewage sludge for efficient P reclamation have recently gained much attention. Our recent research proposed a low-temperature combustion method that can simultaneously target safe waste disposal, fly ash volume reduction, heavy-metal stabilization, P recovery, and energy reuse. To further optimize treatment conditions and gain deeper insights into P speciation, this study systematically characterized P transformation during low-temperature co-combustion of sewage sludge with biowaste by combining X-ray absorption spectroscopy, sequential extraction, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy analyses. Organic P, phytic acid, and pyrophosphate in the raw feedstock transformed into orthophosphate during low-temperature combustion. With increasing mass fraction of biowaste, low-temperature co-combustion increased the relative abundance of Ca-associated P and decreased the abundance of Fe-associated P. The dominant P species in the produced bottom ash is strongly correlated to the amount and speciation of metals in the feedstock and their affinities to P. The introduction of biowaste altered the enrichment efficiency and availability of P in the ash. Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization is a promising treatment technology for wet organic solid wastes, due to its energy-efficient production of functionalized carbonaceous materials. However, the usage of sewage sludge (SS) derived hydrochar as phosphorus (P) fertilizer for agricultural soil is inhibited by the presence of heavy metals (HMs). Appropriate HM removal technology is required prior to its land application. In this study, an innovative FeCl 3 -assisted electrokinetic technique coupling with hydrothermal carbonization (FEK–HTC) is proposed to produce SS hydrochars with reduced HM content and increased P-retention. FEK–HTC treatment showed synergistic effects in terms of P retention and HM content reduction (56–64 % for Ni, Cu, and Zn). Furthermore, the toxicity of the remaining HMs was dramatically reduced, e.g., by 39.35 % in the case of Zn. Additionally, FEK–HTC transformed P species in hydrochars into highly bio-available form. Electrokinetic treatment resulted in decreased pH values of SS feedstock and promoted the solubilization and erosion of Ca-associated P, resulting in higher non-apatite inorganic phosphorus contents (12.47 to 23.19 mg·g −1 ) compared to hydrochars from untreated sludge. The P migration patterns during the FEK-HTC treatment were assessed based on the combined result of chemical extraction, 31 P NMR, X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), and diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT). DGT analysis showed that the addition of treated hydrochars greatly increased the available P content in the soil. The results provide new insights into applying FEK-HTC technique for SS management.

Abstract:Recovering phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) from biowaste is a key strategy to address the current P resources shortage and soil S deficiency. Food waste digestate (FWD) contains high contents of P and S, while its direct application is severely limited by available nutrient leaching loss and pollutant exposure. Hydrothermal treatment (HT) is an effective technique for biowaste disposal, enabling detoxification and resource recovery. The study systematically investigated the speciation transformation of P and S in FWD during HT, using chemical extraction and in-situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The results revealed that up to 98% of P in FWD was enriched in the solid product (hydrochar) after HT, with organic P and labile P being converted into stable Ca-bound forms, predominantly hydroxyapatite. This transformation reduced the risk of P leakage loss compared to untreated FWD. Interestingly, the S speciation evolution exhibited more complexity. The highest S proportion in hydrochar of 73.6% was observed at 140 °C under HT. As the temperature increased from 140 °C to 180 °C, S in the hydrochar gradually dissolved into the liquid phase, attributed to unstable aliphatic compounds (mercaptan) and the sulfides oxidizing to sulfates. Above 180 °C, intermediate oxidation states and sulfates were reduced and formed metal sulfides. These findings have important implications for understanding the viability of HT for FWD disposal and the value-added utilization of FWD.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P), as a crucial resource, has attracted more attention for its recycling. Products from hydrothermal reaction of sewage sludge (SS), represent promising sources for efficient P recovery. This work systematically summarizes reaction mechanisms of SS hydrothermal reactions and corresponding distribution, migration, and morphological transformation pathways of P during reactions. The formation of hydrochar is mainly attributed to the polymerization, aromatization, and condensation of remarkably reactive intermediates generated through the degradation of biopolymers in SS, as well as the solid-solid conversion of part of lignin and the precipitation of insoluble humic substances. P in SS is mostly concentrated in solid-phase products (hydrochar) after hydrothermal reaction. Orthophosphate is the dominant P species in hydrochar. The distribution and migration transformation pathways of P are notably influenced by reaction conditions (i.e., reaction temperature, reaction time, initial pH and additives). The reaction time had a small effect on P conversion. Wet chemical extraction is widely used to extract P from hydrochar. The P extraction efficiency of acid extraction is higher than that of alkaline extraction. However, the precipitation of heavy metals in hydrochar limits industrial application of acid leaching. Ultimately, some prospects for the optimization of the P recovery process are put forward.

Abstract:It is essential to understand the P dynamics of recycled biomaterials, like biochar derived from sewage sludge, especially with potential application as fertilizers. The objective of this study was to understand how pyrolysis affects the speciation of P in sewage sludge and thereby the effect on labile P pools and mobility of P in soil. The P speciation and lability of two sewage sludges (one biologically treated and one iron-precipitated) and their biochars (pyrolyzed at 400 °C and 600 °C) were determined by liquid state 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy, and sequential chemical extraction. These biomaterials were applied in a concentrated band to two soils, and P lability was studied in the adjacent soil at varying distances. Speciation techniques showed P was more closely associated with Ca and Fe for the iron-precipitated sludge and its biochars than the biologically treated sludge and its biochars. Instead, the P in the biologically treated biochars was found to be largely (40% or more) in polymeric forms (pyro- or poly-phosphates). The relationship between the speciation and the mobility of P in soil (as assessed by incubating biomaterials in a one-dimensional reaction system) was more evident when incubating the sewage sludges than the respective biochars. Particularly, the biologically treated sludge had a high proportion of labile P (56% water-extractable P), as determined by sequential extraction, and upon incubation, it was also the only material where water-extractable P remained significantly above the control soil level up to 3 mm from the biomaterial layer. After pyrolysis, this lability decreased significantly (up to a 25-fold decrease in water-extractable P), and this was reflected in the immobility of P in the biochars during incubation in the two soils. Differences in speciation between biochars were not reflected in the incubation experiment, as the differences in P release and mobility were not significant.

Abstract:The effect of phosphoric acid addition to the feed-water on the speciation and transformation behaviour of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) of sewage sludge was explored. Over 70% of each of the PTEs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) was in the directly bioavailable and potentially bioavailable fraction in the raw sludge, and especially Cu and Zn at 97.5 and 98.6%, respectively. Through the HTC process the directly bioavailable and potentially bioavailable fractions of PTEs in the sludge hydrochar clearly decreased, and the residual fraction in the hydrochar showed an observable increase. Further stabilisation of PTEs in hydrochar occurred during HTC with the addition of phosphoric acid solution to the feed-water. As the concentration of phosphoric acid in the feed-water increased the percentages of the residual fraction of Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn in hydrochars each exceeded 80%, but different PTEs behaved differently with increasing phosphate molar ratio in the feed-water. When the molar ratio of phosphate was 15%, the percentages of the residual fractions of Cd, Mn and Zn reached their maximum values in accordance with the changing trend in aromaticity of the hydrochar. Moreover, a large number of phosphate mineral crystals effectively occluded the PTEs in hydrochar. In conclusion, the addition of phosphoric acid to the feed-water during HTC further deactivated PTEs leading to a substantial decline in the potential environmental risk associated with the land application of the sewage sludge.

Abstract:Sewage sludge has one of the highest phosphorus (P) recovery potentials of all waste materials. Therefore, P-recycling from sewage sludge could contribute to closing the P-cycle. Recently, various thermal processes for P-recovery have been developed, but there is still a demand for information on the effect of different process parameters (e.g. additives and temperature) on P-speciation and especially on the fertilization performance. In the present study, two common methods (low-temperature conversion at 400-500°C and thermochemical treatment at 950°C) were investigated and combined to produce highly bioavailable P-fertilizers from two different types of sewage sludge based on chemical phosphorus precipitation (Chem-P) and enhanced biological phosphorus removal (Bio-P). The results of P-fractionation, X-ray diffraction analysis, and pot experiments with maize showed that Bio-P sludges attain high P-plant-availability after treatment at low temperatures (400°C). In contrast, Chem-P sludges can adequately be treated at higher temperatures under reductive conditions with sodium additives to form highly bioavailable calcium-sodium-phosphate. Additionally, also highly heavy-metal contaminated sludges can be thermochemically treated at high temperatures to achieve the legal requirements for fertilizers.

Abstract:On the basis of the carbonaceous skeleton assisted thermal hydrolysis that we proposed to achieve efficient sludge dewatering, this work further explored phosphorus (P) transformation in the process. The results showed that during independent thermal hydrolysis in the temperature range of 120-240 °C, organic-P was first decomposed into soluble-P and particulate-P in liquid, and then combined with Ca, Fe, and Al to form more apatite-P (AP) and less non-apatite inorganic-P (NAIP). When the skeleton assisted the sludge thermal hydrolysis, the turning point of the hydrolysis temperature would reduce from 180 °C to 150 °C, at which the liquid-P began to decrease and the organic-P generally decomposed. Moreover, the increment in the content of AP halved while that of NAIP doubled compared to that in the process without the carbonaceous skeleton. These effects come from the exogenous components introduced by adding the skeleton, which were different from the sludge. Compared with the P-rich compound and metal elements that tend to bond with phosphate introduced by the skeleton, hemicellulose as a main organic component played a leading role in the different P transformations of AP and NAIP. The hemicellulose slightly increased the acidity of sludge products, thereby inhibiting AP production and promoting the production of recyclable NAIP. Overall, the carbonaceous skeleton assisted thermal hydrolysis was beneficial for P recovery with a very low filtrate loss rate.
