Abstract:We investigate the quantum phase transitions of the transverse-field quantum Ising model on the triangular lattice and Sierpiński fractal lattices by employing the multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence along with the quantum renormalization group method. It is shown that the quantum criticalities of these high-dimensional models closely relate to the behaviors of the multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence. As the thermodynamic limit is approached, the first derivatives of the multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence exhibit singular behaviors, and the consistent finite-size scaling behaviors for each lattice are also obtained from the first derivatives. The multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence are demonstrated to be good indicators for detecting the quantum phase transitions in the triangular lattice and Sierpiński fractal lattices. Furthermore, the dimensions determine the relations between the critical exponents and the correlation length exponents for these lattices.
Remarks on discrete Dirac operators and their continuum limits

Abstract:We discuss possible definitions of discrete Dirac operators, and discuss their continuum limits. It is well-known in the lattice field theory that the straightforward discretization of the Dirac operator introduces unwanted spectral subspaces, and it is known as the fermion doubling. In oder to overcome this difficulty, two methods were proposed. The first one is to introduce a new term, called the Wilson term, and the second one is the KS-fermion model or the staggered fermion model. We discuss mathematical formulations of these, and study their continuum limits.

$2+1$ dimensional Floquet systems and lattice fermions: Exact bulk spectral equivalence

Abstract:A connection has recently been proposed between periodically driven systems known as Floquet insulators in continuous time and static fermion theories in discrete time. This connection has been established in a $(1+1)$-dimensional free theory, where an explicit mapping between the spectra of a Floquet insulator and a discrete-time Dirac fermion theory has been formulated. Here we investigate the potential of static discrete-time theories to capture Floquet physics in higher dimensions, where so-called anomalous Floquet topological insulators can emerge that feature chiral edge states despite having bulk bands with zero Chern number. Starting from a particular model of an anomalous Floquet system, we provide an example of a static discrete-time theory whose bulk spectrum is an exact analytic match for the Floquet spectrum. The spectra with open boundary conditions in a particular strip geometry also match up to finite-size corrections. However, the models differ in several important respects. The discrete-time theory is spatially anisotropic, so that the spectra do not agree for all lattice terminations, e.g. other strip geometries or on half spaces. This difference can be attributed to the fact that the static discrete-time model is quasi-one-dimensional in nature and therefore has a different bulk-boundary correspondence than the Floquet model.

Abstract:We introduce a small change in the definition of the Fourier series so that we can guarantee the coincidence with the given function at the endpoints of the interval even if the function does not assume the same value at the endpoints. This definition of the Fourier series also eliminates the Gibbs phenomenom at the endpoints of the interval and proves useful in the resolution of antiperiodic and mixed boundary value problems with linear partial differential equations.

Strong-weak Coupling Lattice Duality in Non-Local QFT with Application to Phase Transitions

Abstract:This paper investigates the method of obtaining strong coupling regime expansions for a set of Euclidean Quantum Field Theories on a general lattice, illustrated through a self-interacting scalar field $g^4 \phi^4 / 4!$ on a cubic lattice of arbitrary dimensions. A duality is established between the strong coupling regime of this theory and the weak coupling regime of a corresponding dual theory. For Ising model, it corresponds to other choice of field-theoretical description of the same spin partition function. While the original theory is local, its dual counterpart is non-local. Using Feynman diagrammatic techniques for the dual theory, expansions for the two-point correlator and the free energy per site in the region of large and medium coupling constants $g$ are derived. These expansions appear to be regular as $g \rightarrow 0$ and they require no cumbersome calculations for derivation. Furthermore, they demonstrate sufficiently rapid numerical convergence in the regions of large and medium coupling values. Numerical analysis in dimensions $d=2$ and $d=3$ shows agreement with analytical results from Monte Carlo simulations. Moreover, the strong coupling regime expansions are consistent with traditional weak coupling expansions. Unfortunately, this duality does not trivially extend to continuous theories, hence they are not considered in this work.

Abstract:The standard perturbative weak-coupling expansions in lattice models are asymptotic. The reason for this is hidden in the incorrect interchange of the summation and integration. However, substituting the Gaussian initial approximation of the perturbative expansions by a certain interacting model or regularizing original lattice integrals, one can construct desired convergent series. In this paper we develop methods, which are based on the joint and separate utilization of the regularization and new initial approximation. We prove, that the convergent series exist and can be expressed as re-summed standard perturbation theory for any model on the finite lattice with the polynomial interaction of even degree. We discuss properties of such series and study their applicability to practical computations on the example of the lattice ϕ4-model. We calculate 〈ϕn2〉 expectation value using the convergent series, the comparison of the results with the Borel re-summation and Monte Carlo simulations shows a good agreement between all these methods.

Landau ordering phase transitions beyond the Landau paradigm

Abstract:Continuous phase transitions associated with the onset of a spontaneously broken symmetry are thought to be successfully described by the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson-Fisher theory of fluctuating order parameters. In this work we show that such transitions can admit new universality classes which cannot be understood in terms of a theory of order parameter fluctuations. We explicitly demonstrate continuous time reversal symmetry breaking quantum phase transitions of $3+1$-D bosonic systems described by critical theories expressed in terms of a deconfined gauge theory with massless Dirac fermions instead of the fluctuating Ising order parameter. We dub such phase transitions "Landau transitions beyond Landau description" (LBL). A key feature of our examples is that the stability of the LBL fixed points requires a crucial global symmetry, which is non-anomalous, unbroken, and renders no symmetry protected topological phase throughout the phase diagram. Despite this, there are elementary critical fluctuations of the phase transition that transform projectively under this symmetry group. We also construct examples of other novel quantum critical phenomena, notably a continuous Landau-forbidden deconfined critical point between two Landau-allowed phases in $3+1$-D.

Structural transitions in interacting lattice systems

Abstract:We consider two-dimensional systems of point particles located on rectangular lattices and interacting via pairwise potentials. The goal of this paper is to investigate the phase transitions (and their nature) at fixed density for the minimal energy of such systems. The 2D rectangle lattices we consider have an elementary cell of sides $a$ and $b$, the aspect ratio is defined as $\Delta=b/a$ and the inverse particle density $A = a b$; therefore, the "symmetric'' state with $\Delta=1$ corresponds to the square lattice and the "non-symmetric'' state to the rectangular lattice with $\Delta\ne 1$. For certain types of the interaction potential, by changing continuously the particle density, such lattice systems undertake at a specific value of the (inverse) particle density $A^*$ a structural transition from the symmetric to the non-symmetric state. The structural transition can be either of first order ($\Delta$ unstick from its symmetric value $\Delta=1$ discontinuously) or of second order ($\Delta$ unstick from $\Delta=1$ continuously); the first and second-order phase transitions are separated by the so-called tricritical point. We develop a general theory on how to determine the exact values of the transition densities and the location of the tricritical point. The general theory is applied to the double Yukawa and Yukawa-Coulomb potentials.

Continuum Limit Of Mean-Field Partition Functions

Abstract:In physics, the continuum limit consists of transforming discretely-spaced degrees of freedom on a lattice into smoothly-varying fields on a continuous domain. In these transformations, the degrees of freedom are typically dynamical variables like position or probability. However, in statistical physics, partition functions themselves can be seen as existing on a discrete lattice whose individual sites are identified by the number of degrees of freedom in the system. In this work, we pursue this interpretation and show that the continuum limit of a certain class of mean-field theory partition functions yields a partial differential equation whose solution provides large N approximations to the partition function of the original system. The equation is obtained by promoting the number of degrees of freedom itself to a continuous variable and then re-interpreting (as finite differences in a continuous space) the recursive relation that defines the partition function. For some example systems, we show that solutions to this equation yield transition temperatures with the same parameter-scaling behavior as those of the original system. We conclude by discussing how this formalism can motivate "diffusion in degree-of-freedom space" interpretations of how interacting partition functions vary with temperature.

Classical origins of Landau-incompatible transitions

Abstract:Continuous phase transitions where symmetry is spontaneously broken are ubiquitous in physics and often found between `Landau-compatible' phases where residual symmetries of one phase are a subset of the other. However, continuous `deconfined quantum critical' transitions between Landau-incompatible symmetry-breaking phases are known to exist in certain quantum systems, often with anomalous microscopic symmetries. In this paper, we investigate the need for such special conditions. We show that Landau-incompatible transitions can be found in a family of well-known classical statistical mechanical models with anomaly-free on-site microscopic symmetries, introduced by José, Kadanoff, Kirkpatick and Nelson (Phys. Rev. B 16, 1217). The models are labeled by a positive integer $Q$ and constructed by a deformation of the 2d classical XY model, defined on any lattice, with an on-site potential that preserves a discrete $Q$-fold spin rotation and reflection symmetry. For a range of temperatures, even $Q$ models exhibit two Landau-incompatible partial symmetry-breaking phases and a direct transition between them for $Q \ge 4$. Characteristic features of Landau-incompatible transitions are easily seen, such as enhanced symmetries and melting of charged defects. For odd $Q$, and corresponding temperature ranges, two regions of a single partial symmetry-breaking phase are obtained, split by a stable `unnecessary critical' line. We present quantum models with anomaly-free symmetries that also exhibit similar phase diagrams.

Abstract:We discuss a large class of classical field theories with continuous translation symmetry. In the quantum theory, a new anomaly explicitly breaks this translation symmetry to a discrete symmetry. Furthermore, this discrete translation symmetry is extended by a $d-2$-form global symmetry. All these theories can be described as $U(1)$ gauge theories where Gauss law states that the system has nonzero charge density. Special cases of such systems can be phrased as theories with a compact phase space. Examples are ferromagnets and lattices in the lowest Landau level. In some cases, the broken continuous translation symmetry can be resurrected as a noninvertible symmetry. We clarify the relation between the discrete translation symmetry of the continuum theory and the discrete translation symmetry of an underlying lattice model. Our treatment unifies, clarifies, and extends earlier works on the same subject.

Abstract:The standard perturbation theory in QFT and lattice models leads to asymptotic expansions. However, an appropriate regularization of the path or lattice integrals allows one to construct convergent series with an infinite radius of the convergence. In the earlier studies this approach was applied to the purely bosonic systems. Here, using bosonization, we develop the convergent perturbation theory for a toy lattice model with interacting fermionic and bosonic fields.

Abstract:Resummation methods using continued functions are implemented to converge divergent series appearing in perturbation problems related to continuous phase transitions in field theories. In some cases, better convergence properties are obtained using continued functions than diagonal Pade approximants, which are extensively used in literature. We check the reliability of critical exponent estimates derived previously in universality classes of O(n)-symmetric models (classical phase transitions) and Gross-Neveu-Yukawa models (quantum phase transitions) using new methods.

Abstract:We develop a resummed high-temperature expansion for lattice spin systems with long range interactions, in models where the free energy is not, in general, analytic. We establish uniqueness of the Gibbs state and exponential decay of the correlation functions. Then, we apply this expansion to the Perron-Frobenius operator of weakly coupled map lattices.

Abstract:Many frustrated spin models on three-dimensional (3D) lattices are currently being investigated, both experimentally and theoretically, and develop new types of long-range orders in their respective phase diagrams. They present finite-temperature phase transitions, most likely in the Heisenberg 3D universality class. However, the combination between the 3D character and frustration makes them hard to study. We present here several methods derived from high-temperature series expansions (HTSEs), which give exact coefficients directly in the thermodynamic limit up to a certain order; for several 3D lattices, supplementary orders than in previous literature are reported for the HTSEs. We introduce an interpolation method able to describe thermodynamic quantities at $T > T_c$, which we use here to reconstruct the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat and to extract universal and non-universal quantities (for example critical exponents, temperature, energy, entropy, and other parameters related to the phase transition). While the susceptibility associated with the order parameter is not usually known for more exotic long-range orders, the specific heat is indicative of a phase transition for any kind of symmetry breaking. We present examples of applications on ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic models on various 3D lattices and benchmark our results whenever possible.

Abstract:Dirac point plays a crucial role in regulating electronic properties of topological semimetals. In two dimensions, the manipulation of Dirac points can spur a transition from Dirac semimetal through semi-Dirac phase to a gapped phase. Across such a so-called Lifshitz transition, we find that the quantum interference corrections to the conductivity δσxx and δσyy are always negative, giving rise to a weak localization behavior. The ratio δσxx/δσyy undergoes a transition from linear to parabolic dependence on the merging parameter across the Lifshitz transition, which leads to a crossover of the temperature dependence of the inverse inelastic scattering time 1/τɛ from ∼T to ∼Tln(T0/T). This fingerprint behavior can be readily tested experimentally through merging Dirac points in two-dimensional lattices. This work presents an alternative perspective to understand weak localization through Lifshitz transition.

Abstract:We study an integrable Floquet quantum system related to lattice statistical systems in the universality class of dense polymers. These systems are described by a particular non-unitary representation of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. We find a simple Lie algebra structure for the elements of Temperley-Lieb algebra which are invariant under shift by two lattice sites, and show how the local Floquet conserved charges and the Floquet Hamiltonian are expressed in terms of this algebra. The system has a phase transition between local and non-local phases of the Floquet Hamiltonian. We provide a strong indication that in the scaling limit this non-equilibrium system is described by the logarithmic conformal field theory.

Continuous order-to-order quantum phase transitions from fixed-point annihilation

Abstract:A central concept in the theory of phase transitions beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm is fractionalization: the formation of new quasiparticles that interact via emergent gauge fields. This concept has been extensively explored in the context of continuous quantum phase transitions between distinct orders that break different symmetries. We propose a mechanism for continuous order-to-order quantum phase transitions that operates independently of fractionalization. This mechanism is based on the collision and annihilation of two renormalization group fixed points: a quantum critical fixed point and an infrared stable fixed point. The annihilation of these fixed points rearranges the flow topology, eliminating the disordered phase associated with the infrared stable fixed point and promoting a second critical fixed point, unaffected by the collision, to a quantum critical point between distinct orders. We argue that this mechanism is relevant to a broad spectrum of physical systems. In particular, it can manifest in Luttinger fermion systems in three spatial dimensions, leading to a continuous quantum phase transition between an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal state, which breaks time-reversal symmetry, and a nematic topological insulator, characterized by broken lattice rotational symmetry. This continuous antiferromagnetic-Weyl-to-nematic-insulator transition might be observed in rare-earth pyrochlore iridates $R_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Other possible realizations include kagome quantum magnets, quantum impurity models, and quantum chromodynamics with supplemental four-fermion interactions.
