Abstract:This work aims to synthesize, characterize and determine the catalytic performance of MgO-KOH based catalysts using the glycerol acetylation reaction as a test. Acetylation of glycerol yields acetin compounds, which are considered high-value products with applications ranging from solvents in medicine to additives in gasoline. The catalysts were prepared by the co-precipitation method from the magnesium nitrate mixture as MgO precursor using KOH solutions at three different concentrations (1, 2, and 3 molar). Once obtained, the catalysts were characterized by Infrared and Raman spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption. The basic properties were determined using the thermal programmed CO2 desorption technique (TPD-CO2). The catalytic activity was evaluated in a glycerol/acetic acid esterification reaction carried out in a batch reactor at 70 °C, using a glycerol to acetic acid ratio of 1:3, 2 g of catalyst and for 110 min as the reaction conditions. The results show that catalysts have a high basicity with moderate strength and that they were highly active and stable. The catalyst with the highest amount of KOH was the most active, giving 95% glycerol conversion and 60% selectivity to higher acetin such as triacetate (TAGLY). The selectivity towards triacetin formation increased with increasing reaction time. In contrast, DAGLY formation decreased continuously as a function of time and glycerol monoacetate (MAGLY) formation remained almost constant throughout the reaction time.Graphical Abstract
