Abstract:This paper traces the cooperative efforts of scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to improve the calibration of operational satellite sensors for remote sensing of the Earth's land, atmosphere and oceans. It gives a chronological perspective of the NOAA satellite program and the interactions between the two agencies' scientists to address pre-launch calibration and issues of sensor performance on orbit. The drive to improve accuracy of measurements has had a new impetus in recent years because of the need for improved weather prediction and climate monitoring. The highlights of this cooperation and strategies to achieve SI-traceability and improve accuracy for optical satellite sensor data are summarized.

Abstract:The radiometric calibration equations for the thermal emissive bands (TEB) and the reflective solar bands (RSB) measurements of the earth scenes by the polar satellite sensors, (Terra and Aqua) MODIS and Suomi NPP (VIIRS), and geostationary sensors, GOES Imager and the GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) are analyzed towards calibration algorithm harmonization on the basis of SI traceability which is one of the goals of the NOAA National Calibration Center (NCC). One of the overarching goals of NCC is to provide knowledge base on the NOAA operational satellite sensors and recommend best practices for achieving SI traceability for the radiance measurements on-orbit. As such, the calibration methodologies of these satellite optical sensors are reviewed in light of the recommended practice for radiometric calibration at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The equivalence of some of the spectral bands in these sensors for their end products is presented. The operational and calibration features of the sensors for on-orbit observation of radiance are also compared in tabular form. This review is also to serve as a quick cross reference to researchers and analysts on how the observed signals from these sensors in space are converted to radiances.

Abstract:The satellite Earth observation (EO) sector is burgeoning with hundreds of commercial satellites being launched each year, delivering a rich source of data that could be exploited for societal benefit. Data streams from the growing number of commercial satellites are of variable quality, limiting the potential for their combined use in science applications that need long time-series data from multiple sources. The quality of calibration performed on optical sensors onboard many satellite systems is highly variable due to calibration methods, sensor design, mission objective, budget, or other operational constraints. A small number of currently operating well-characterised satellite systems with onboard calibration, such as Landsat-8/9 and Sentinel-2, and planned future missions, like the NASA Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity Observatory (CLARREO) Pathfinder, the European Space Agency (ESA)'s Traceable Radiometry Underpinning Terrestrial and Helio Studies (TRUTHS), and LIBRA from China, are considered benchmarks for optical data quality due to their traceability to international measurement standards. This paper describes the concept of a space-based transfer calibration radiometer called the Satellite Cross-Calibration Radiometer (SCR) that would enable the calibration parameters from satellites such as Landsat-8/9, Sentinel-2, or other benchmark systems to be transferred to a range of commercial optical EO satellite systems while in orbit. A description of the key characteristics of the SCR to successfully operate in orbit and transfer calibration from reference systems to client systems is presented. A system like the SCR in orbit could complement SI-Traceable satellites (SITSats) to improve data quality and consistency and facilitate the interoperable use of data from multiple optical sensor systems for delivering higher returns on the global investment in EO.

Abstract:The launch of VIIRS on-board the Suomi-National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) on 28 October 2011, marked the beginning of the next chapter on nighttime lights observation started by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program’s (DMSP) OLS sensor more than two decades ago. The VIIRS observes the nighttime lights on Earth through its day-night band (DNB), a panchromatic channel covering the wavelengths from 500 nm to 900 nm. Compared to its predecessors, the VIIRS DNB has a much improved spatial/temporal resolution, radiometric sensitivity and, more importantly, continuous calibration using on-board calibrators (OBCs). In this paper, we describe the current state of the NASA calibration and characterization methodology used in supporting mission data quality assurance and producing consistent mission-wide sensor data records (SDRs) through NASA’s Land Product Evaluation and Analysis Tool Element (Land PEATE). The NASA calibration method utilizes the OBCs to determine gains, offset drift and sign-to-noise ratio (SNR) over the entire mission. In gain determination, the time-dependent relative spectral response (RSR) is used to correct the optical throughput change over time. A deep space view acquired during an S-NPP pitch maneuver is used to compute the airglow free dark offset for DNB’s high gain stage. The DNB stray light is estimated each month from new-moon dark Earth surface observations to remove the excessive stray light over the day-night terminators. As the VIIRS DNB on-orbit calibration is the first of its kind, the evolution of the calibration methodology is evident when the S-NPP VIIRS’s official calibrations are compared with our latest mission-wide reprocessing. In the future, the DNB calibration methodology is likely to continue evolving, and the mission-wide reprocessing is a key to providing consistently calibrated DNB SDRs for the user community. In the meantime, the NASA Land PEATE provides an alternative source to obtain mission-wide DNB SDR products that are calibrated based on the latest NASA DNB calibration methodology.

Abstract:Calibration and validation (Cal/Val) toolkits are very critical for both satellite pre-launch end-to-end testing and post-launch real data quality check-out. In this paper, we present a AIRS-MODIS-VIIRS band mapping toolkit, which is designed for cross comparison and cross calibration of AIRS-MODIS-VIIRS thermal infrared bands based on the band-mapping approach we proposed. The main functionalities of this toolkit include spatial match-up between AIRS and MODIS foot prints, spectral simulation of VIIRS and MODIS thermal infrared bands with AIRS measurements, visual and statistical analyses among VIIRS, MODIS and AIRS thermal infrared bands for stratified scene characteristics, channels and scan angles. It also provides basic data manipulation and file format conversion capabilities. This toolkit can provide supports for VIIRS calibration and can be further enhanced into a NPOESS/NPP post-launch toolkit for real-time cross-instrument calibration and data quality check.

Abstract:Radiometric calibration of the medium-resolution satellite data is critical for monitoring and quantifying changes in the Earth's environment and resources. Many medium-resolution satellite sensors have irregular revisits and, sometimes, have a large difference in illumination viewing geometry compared with a reference sensor, posing a great challenge for routine cross-calibration practices. To overcome these issues, this study proposed a cross-calibration method to calibrate medium-resolution multispectral data. The Chinese Gaofen-4 (GF-4) panchromatic and multispectral sensor (PMS) data with large viewing angles were used as the test data, and Landsat-8 operational land imager (OLI) data were used as the reference data. A bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) correction method was proposed to eliminate the effects of differences in illumination viewing geometry between GF-4 and Landsat-8. The validation using concurrent image shows that the mean relative error (MRE) of cross calibration is less than 6.65%. Validation using ground measurements shows that our calibration results have an improvement of around 14.8% compared with the official released calibration coefficients. The time series cross calibration reveals that, without the requirements of simultaneous nadir observations (SNOs), our calibration activities can be carried out more often in practice. Gradual and continuous radiometric sensor degradation is identified with the monthly updated calibration coefficients, demonstrating the reliability and importance of the timely cross calibration. Besides, the cross-calibration approach does not rely on any specific calibration site, and the difference in illumination viewing geometry can be well considered. Thus, it can be easily adapted and applied to other optical satellite data.

The Operational Inflight Radiometric Uniform Calibration of a Directional Polarimetric Camera

Abstract:The directional polarimetric camera (DPC) on-board the GF-5A satellite is designed for atmospheric or water color detection, which requires high radiometric accuracy. Therefore, in-flight calibration is a prerequisite for its inversion application. For large field optical sensors, it is very challenging to ensure the consistency of radiation detection in the whole field of view in the space environment. Our work proposes a vicarious in-flight calibration method based on sea non-equipment sites (visible bands) and land non-equipment sites (all bands). Combined with environmental parameters and radiation transmission calculations, we evaluated the radiation detection accuracy of the 0° to 60° view zenith angle of the DPC in each band. Our calibration method is based on the single-day normalized radiance data measured by the DPC. Through data selection, enough calibration samples can be obtained in a single day (the number of desert samples is more than 5000, and the number of calibration samples of the ocean is more than 2.8×106). The measurements are compared with the simulation of 6SV VRT code or look-up tables. The massive amount of data averages the uncertainty of a single-point calculation. Although the uncertainty of a single sample is significant, the final fitting of the curve of the variation in the radiometric calibration coefficient with the observation angle can still keep the root mean squared error at approximately 2–3% or even lower, and for visible bands, the calibration results for both ocean sites and desert sites are in good agreement regarding the non-uniformity of the sensor.

[Overview of the Study for Transfer Radiometer with Spectral Standard Calibration and Transferring Technology]

Abstract:Transfer radiometer is the critical calibration facility of remote sensing instruments on satellites to achieve spectral radiometric calibration on-orbit. It’s also the core for spectral calibration with high accuracy in the laboratory on earth. This paper compares the similarities and differences between several transfer radiometers developed by various institutes covering 200～700, 700～2 000 nm spectrum bandwidth separately through describing their construction, design and operational principles and the method of transferring radiometric calibration benchmark. It shows the realizable accuracy of every transfer radiometers by introducing their central technology applied in the calibration procedures of different wavelength range. The advantages and shortcomings together with every transfer radiometer determine the application circumstance. According to the Introduction of the process of the calibration traceability based on radiance standard in international institutes of standard technology，it emphasizes the importance of transfer radiometers in the procedure. It demonstrates the significance of transfer radiometer in radiometric calibration of aeronautics and space through its application of monitoring the calibration light source for spectrometers. Finally, it presents the prospect for the development and crucial issues of transfer radiometer’s technology in the future research through describing the new transfer radiometer designed in internal institute. Simultaneously, it predicts and summarizes difficult problems required to be solved in the future as to high-accuracy calibration transferring system on-orbit against SI-traceable primary standard, which consists of cryogenic radiometers and transfer radiometers.
Design and Characterization of a Large Aperture Spectral Radiance Source Integrating Sphere for Calibration of Satellite Remote Sensors

Abstract:A large aperture uniform radiation source integrating sphere (URSIS) based on a 4m diameter internally illuminated integrating sphere with a 1.6m diameter exit port was designed and manufactured. This URSIS was used for pre-launch test and radiance calibration of large aperture imaging radiometers which fly aboard earth-borne remote satellites. Design criteria of the large aperture URSIS including sphere source radiance output, spatial radiance uniformity and radiance stability were presented. Integrating sphere internal lamp sources specifications and sphere coating selection were also concerned to suit the requirements of the multi-spectral-band imaging remote sensors.A new radiance calibration method of the URSIS based on Re-C blackbody was applied. The radiance calibration uncertainties varied from 2.8% to 3.5% with a coverage factor k=2 were achieved.The spectral radiance of the large aperture URSIS was characterized in the wavelength region from blue to near-infrared of spectrum. The spatial radiance uniformity of the large aperture URSIS was better than 99.0% and the stability was better than 0.4% over a period of 2 hours after an initial 30 minutes warm-up.

Abstract:The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is one of the key instruments on the recently launched NOAA-21 (previously known as JPSS-2) satellite. The VIIRS, like its predecessors on the SNPP and NOAA-20 satellites, provides daily global coverage in 22 spectral bands from 412 nm to 12 μm. The geometrically and radiometrically calibrated observations are the basis for many operational applications and scientific research studies. A total of 14 of the 22 bands are reflective solar bands (RSBs), covering photon wavelengths from 412 nm to 2.25 μm. The RSBs were radiometrically calibrated prelaunch and have been regularly calibrated on orbit through the onboard solar diffuser (SD) and scheduled lunar observations. The on-orbit SD's reflectance change is determined by the onboard solar diffuser stability monitor (SDSM). We review the calibration algorithms and present the early mission performance of the NASA N21 VIIRS RSBs. Using the calibration data collected at both the yaw maneuver and regular times, we derive the screen transmittance functions. The visible and near-infrared bands' radiometric gains have been stable, nearly independent of time, and so were the radiometric gains of the shortwave-infrared bands after the second mid-mission outgassing. Further, we assess the Earth-view striping observed in the immediate prior collection (Collection 2.0) and apply a previously developed algorithm to mitigate the striping. The N21 VIIRS RSB detector signal-to-noise ratios are all above the design values with large margins. Finally, the uncertainties of the retrieved Earth-view top-of-the-atmosphere spectral reflectance factors at the respective typical spectral radiance levels are estimated to be less than 1.5% for all the RSBs, except band M11 whose reflectance factor uncertainty is 2.2%.

Abstract:As an image-spectrum merging technology, the hyperspectral sensor has become an important part in remote sensing. The spectral calibration results of the hyperspectral sensor measured in the laboratory should be refined when applied to the on-board imaging spectrometer due to variations between the laboratory and actual flight environments. The larger the spectrum offset of the spectral response function (SRF), the worse the retrieval accuracy of the reflective characteristics of the targets. Therefore, an on-board spectral calibration algorithm based on standard diffuse boards with a gradient of reflectivity is proposed in this paper. By constructing the differential function of radiation transfer coefficients, the center wavelength offsets of SRF can be solved. In addition, a back-propagation neural network has been established to eliminate the effect of the atmospheric underlying surface and improve the accuracy of on-board spectral calibration. The three-sigma confidence interval of the on-board spectral precision is $ \pm 0.23\,\,{\rm nm}$±0.23nm (uncertainty $ \lt {0.05}$<0.05 spectral pixels). The algorithm can be applied to a general hyperspectral sensor.

Abstract:The radiometric capability of on-orbit sensors should be updated on time due to changes induced by space environmental factors and instrument aging. Some sensors, such as Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), have onboard calibrators, which enable real-time calibration. However, most Chinese remote sensing satellite sensors lack onboard calibrators. Their radiometric calibrations have been updated once a year based on a vicarious calibration procedure, which has affected the applications of the data. Therefore, a full evaluation of the sensors' radiometric capabilities is essential before quantitative applications can be made. In this study, a comprehensive procedure for evaluating the radiometric capability of several Chinese optical satellite sensors is proposed. In this procedure, long-term radiometric stability and radiometric accuracy are the two major indicators for radiometric evaluation. The radiometric temporal stability is analyzed by the tendency of long-term top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance variation; the radiometric accuracy is determined by comparison with the TOA reflectance from MODIS after spectrally matching. Three Chinese sensors including the Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) camera onboard Huan Jing 1 satellite (HJ-1), as well as the Visible and Infrared Radiometer (VIRR) and Medium-Resolution Spectral Imager (MERSI) onboard the Feng Yun 3 satellite (FY-3) are evaluated in reflective bands based on this procedure. The results are reasonable, and thus can provide reliable reference for the sensors' application, and as such will promote the development of Chinese satellite data.

Neurogenic inflammation in an animal model of neuropathic pain.

Abstract:Loose ligation of a rat sciatic nerve (chronic constriction injury (CCI) model) provokes signs and symptoms like those observed in reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) patients. Primary afferent nociceptive C-fibers seem to be involved in an afferent orthodromic as well as in an efferent antidromic manner. In this study we hypothesize that consequent to development of antidromic impulses in C-nociceptive afferents, neuropeptides released from peripheral endings of these fibers, increase skin blood flow (SBF), vascular permeability, and tissue accumulation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). Collectively, these phenomena have been referred to as neurogenic inflammation. To investigate the presence of neurogenic inflammation in the CCI-model, we assessed skin blood flow (SBF) as well as the level of edema and accumulation of PMNs in muscle tissue obtained from the affected hindpaw. SBF was measured, by means of laser Doppler flowmetry, before ligation as well as at day 4 after ligation. At day 4, SBF measurements were performed before and after abolition of the capability of C-fibers to mediate a vasodilator response. To this end, capsaicin was applied perineurally. Increased vascular permeability was inferred from the level of edema of muscle tissue as determined by assessment of wet/dry weight ratios of muscle biopsies. PMN accumulation was investigated by enzymatic detection of myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in muscle biopsies. Compared with preligation values, at day 4 SBF was increased more than twofold (p < 0.05). The latter response was annihilated by capsaicin application. Compared with sham operated controls, wet/dry ratios were higher in the ligated animals (1.104 vs. 1.068; p < 0.05). Likewise, when compared with sham operated controls, MPO activity was found to be increased in the ligated hindpaw (Optic Density 0.15 vs. 0.89; p < 0.001). In conclusion, the findings of this study indicate that loose ligation of a sciatic nerve induces an inflammatory response in the ipsilateral hindpaw, which most likely is mediated by release of neuropeptides from the peripheral endings of antidromically acting nociceptive C-fibres.
A General On-Orbit Absolute Radiometric Calibration Method Compatible with Multiple Imaging Conditions

Abstract:On-orbit absolute radiometric calibration is not only a prerequisite for the quantitative application of optical remote sensing satellite data but also a key step in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of satellite observation data. Due to the diversity of imaging conditions for optical remote sensing satellite sensors, on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration usually requires a large number of imaging tasks and manual labor to calibrate each imaging condition. This seriously limits the timeliness of on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration and is also an urgent problem to be solved in the context of the explosive growth of satellite numbers. Based on this, we propose a general on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration method compatible with multiple imaging conditions. Firstly, we use a large amount of laboratory radiometric calibration data to explore the mathematical relationship between imaging conditions (row transfer time, integration level and gain), radiance, and DN, and successfully build an imaging condition compatibility model. Secondly, we combine the imaging condition compatibility model with cross calibration to achieve a general on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration method. We use cross calibration to obtain the reference radiance and corresponding DN of the target satellites, which calculates the general coefficient by using row transfer time, integration level, and gain, and use the general coefficient to calibrate all imaging conditions. Finally, we use multiple imaging tasks of the JL1GF03D11 satellites to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experiments show that the average relative difference was reduced to 2.79% and the RMSE was reduced to 1.51, compared with the laboratory radiometric calibration method. In addition, we also verify the generality of the proposed method by using 10 satellites of the Jilin-1 GF03D series. The experiment shows that the goodness of fit of the general coefficient is all greater than 95%, and the average relative difference between the reference radiance and the calibrated radiance of the proposed method is 2.46%, with an RMSE of 1.67. To sum up, by using the proposed method, all imaging conditions of optical remote sensing satellite sensor can be calibrated in one imaging task, which greatly improves the timeliness and accuracy of on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration.

Abstract:The launch of the NASA Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) and the Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) satellite sensors will provide increased spectral resolution compared to existing platforms. These new sensors will require robust calibration and validation datasets, but existing field-based instrumentation is limited in its availability and potential for geographic coverage, particularly for coastal and inland waters, where optical complexity is substantially greater than in the open ocean. The minimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is an important metric for assessing the reliability of derived biogeochemical products and their subsequent use as proxies, such as for biomass, in aquatic systems. The SNR can provide insight into whether legacy sensors can be used for algorithm development as well as calibration and validation activities for next-generation platforms. We extend our previous evaluation of SNR and associated uncertainties for representative coastal and inland targets to include the imaging sensors PRISM and AVIRIS-NG, the airborne-deployed C-AIR radiometers, and the shipboard HydroRad and HyperSAS radiometers, which were not included in the original analysis. Nearly all the assessed hyperspectral sensors fail to meet proposed criteria for SNR or uncertainty in remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) for some part of the spectrum, with the most common failures (>20% uncertainty) below 400 nm, but all the sensors were below the proposed 17.5% uncertainty for derived chlorophyll-a. Instrument suites for both in-water and airborne platforms that are capable of exceeding all the proposed thresholds for SNR and Rrs uncertainty are commercially available. Thus, there is a straightforward path to obtaining calibration and validation data for current and next-generation sensors, but the availability of suitable high spectral resolution sensors is limited.

Abstract:The stability and accuracy of the on-orbit radiometric calibration of hyperspectral sensors are prerequisites for the quantitative application of satellite hyperspectral data. The Zhuhai-1 micro-nano satellite constellation is composed of eight hyperspectral satellite missions. The Orbita Hyperspectral Sensor (OHS) on board each satellite has a gradient filter spectroscopic design. When observing the Earth, eight integration stages can be set for each band according to different lighting conditions. Due to high manufacturing costs, OHSs are not equipped with on-board calibration devices. Therefore, it is very difficult to accurately calibrate OHSs for all of the integration stages. On the other hand, it is extremely important to ensure radiometric consistency between different OHSs within the Zhuhai-1 micro-nano satellite constellation. To carry out the rapid radiometric calibration of the Zhuhai-1 constellation, an on-orbit radiometric calibration model considering all of the integration stages related to hyperspectral sensors was built based on the BOA reflectance and atmosphere parameters published by the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) radiometric calibration network (RadCalNet). The RadCalNet product was used to derive the TOA radiance base in the Second Simulation of the Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum (6S) radiative transfer (RT) model. In this paper, we analyzed the radiometric stability of the same sensor and the consistency of different calibration results regarding four RadCalNet sites, and the on-orbit radiometric performance evaluation of OHSs was also carried out. The data retrieved from OHSs regarding hyperspectral surface reflectance were preliminarily validated using site-synchronous surface reflectance measurements.

Abstract:The VIIRS instrument on board the S-NPP spacecraft has successfully operated for more than four years since its launch in October, 2011. Many VIIRS environmental data records (EDR) have been continuously generated from its sensor data records (SDR) with improved quality, enabling a wide range of applications in support of users in both the operational and research communities. This paper provides a brief review of sensor on-orbit calibration methodologies for both the reflective solar bands (RSB) and the thermal emissive bands (TEB) and an overall assessment of their on-orbit radiometric performance using measurements from instrument on-board calibrators (OBC) as well as regularly scheduled lunar observations. It describes and illustrates changes made and to be made for calibration and data quality improvements. Throughout the mission, all of the OBC have continued to operate and function normally, allowing critical calibration parameters used in the data production systems to be derived and updated. The temperatures of the on-board blackbody (BB) and the cold focal plane assemblies are controlled with excellent stability. Despite large optical throughput degradation discovered shortly after launch in several near and short-wave infrared spectral bands and strong wavelength dependent solar diffuser degradation, the VIIRS overall performance has continued to meet its design requirements. Also discussed in this paper are challenging issues identified and efforts to be made to further enhance the sensor calibration and characterization, thereby maintaining or improving data quality.
Inter-Comparison of Npp/Cris Radiances with Viirs, Airs, and Iasi: A Post-Launch Calibration Assessment

Abstract:The Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) on the newly-launched Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) is a Fourier transform spectrometer that provides soundings of the atmosphere with 1305 spectral channels, over 3 wavelength ranges: LWIR (9.14 - 15.38 mu m); MWIR (5.71 - 8.26 mu m); and SWIR (3.92 - 4.64 mu m). An accurate spectral and radiometric calibration as well as geolocation is fundamental for CrIS radiance Sensor Data Records (SDRs). In this study, through inter-and intra-satellite calibration efforts, we focus on assessment of NPP/CrIS post-launch performance. First, we compare CrIS hyperspectral radiance measurements with the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) on NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) Aqua and Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) on Metop-A to examine spectral and radiometric consistence and difference among three hyperspectral IR sounders. Secondly, an accurate collocation algorithm has been developed to collocate high spatial resolution measurements from the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) within each CrIS Field of View (FOV). We compare CrIS spectrally-averaged radiances with the spatially-averaged and collocated pixels from the VIIRS IR channels. Since CrIS and VIIRS are onboard on the same satellite platform, the intra-satellite comparison will allow examining the radiometric difference between CrIS and VIIRS with scene temperatures, scan angles, and orbital position. In addition, given a high spatial resolution of VIIRS channels, the VIIRS-CrIS comparison results can access geolocation accuracy of CrIS that have relatively large FOVs (14 km at ndair) using high resolution VIIRS pixel (375m or 750m at nadir)

Abstract:Accurate spectral calibration of the in-flight sensors is crucial for processing and exploration of remotely sensed data. This paper developed a strategy to make spectral recalibration (i.e., spectral response function, central wavelength, and bandwidth) for in-flight broadband sensor using a device-responsivity-decomposition model with a priori knowledge and an optimization algorithm. Sensitivity analysis indicates that an accurate result requires the targets to be observed under a dry and clear atmospheric condition (column water vapor < 2 g/cm(2) and visibility > 23 km) and no more than 5% error is included in the measured data. The new strategy was used to retrieve the spectral parameters along with radiometric calibration coefficients for a multichannel camera onboard an unmanned aerial vehicle from simultaneously remotely sensed and ground measured data sets over 19 (15 color-scaled and four gray-scaled) man-made surface targets, and the retrieved results were validated with a similar data set over another four man-made targets. It demonstrated that the camera's spectral parameters were accurately retrieved and an error less than 3.5 W/m(2)/mu m/sr was brought to the channel radiance.
