Abstract:In this work, a double-end diffusion bonded Nd:YVO4 self-Raman laser was designed to drive an intracavity, noncritically-phase-matched KTiOAsO4 (KTA) optical parametric oscillator (OPO). Both conversion efficiency and output power at 1.7 µm (the wavelength of the OPO signal field) were improved by effectively reducing the thermal lens effect and increasing the effective length of self-Raman medium. At an incident pump power of 15.4 W, the output power for 1742 nm output laser reached 2.16 W with a conversion efficiency of 14%, and the output having a pulse width of 10.5 ns and a pulse repetition frequency of 90 kHz. The competition between the OPO and cascaded Raman laser was observed when the incident pump power was above 12.4 W. The results highlight that in order to improve output power at 1742 nm, it is critical that both the cascaded, second-Stokes field at 1313 nm and the signal field generated at 1534 nm from the 1064 nm field driving the KTA-OPO be minimized, if not completely suppressed. This laser system combining the processes of stimulated Raman scattering and optical parametric oscillation for the generation of laser emission at 1742 nm may find significant application across a broad range of fields including biological engineering, laser therapy, optical coherence tomography and for the generation of mid-infrared laser wavelengths.

Abstract:A non-critically phase-matched KTiOPO4 optical parametric oscillator (OPO) intracavity pumped by a laser diode end-pumped acousto-optically Q-switchedNd:YAG laser is experimentally demonstrated. The highest average power is obtained at the pulse repetition rate (PRR) of around 15 kHz, which is different from the widely reported Nd:YVO4 laser pumped OPO in which the highest average power is obtained at a very high PRR, e.g. 80 kHz. With an incident laser diode power of 6.93 W and a pulse repetition rate of 15 kHz, an average signal power of 0.72 W is obtained with a peak power of 7.7 kW and an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 10.4%.

Abstract:A 1.8 mu m optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on a noncritically phase-matched KTiOPO4 crystal is demonstrated. OPO and stimulated Raman scattering techniques are successfully combined in an acousto-optically Q-switched Nd:YAG/SrWO4 Raman laser. The device efficiently realizes three steps of conversion: from a laser diode wavelength of 808 nm to the fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm; next, to the Stokes wavelength of 1180 nm; and finally to the OPO signal wavelength of 1810 nm. With an incident diode power of 7.2 W and a pulse repetition rate of 15 kHz, an average signal power of 485 mW is obtained with a diode-to-signal conversion efficiency of 6.75%. The beam quality factors (M-2) of the signal wave in both horizontal and vertical directions are measured to be 1.7 +/- 0.2. The numerical output power results of the system, the thermal lensing, and the stability parameter of the cavity are also discussed. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A novel nonlinear frequency conversion process was demonstrated to realize the synchronized dual-wavelength emissions at 1534 and 1572 nm by the mixed optical parametric oscillation (OPO) conversion in gray-tracking-resistance KTP (GTR-KTP) and KTA crystals. Both the two crystals were inserted into the diode-pumped Nd:YAG/Cr4+:YAG fundamental resonator, with their Y axes perpendicular to each other. This could eliminate the competition of the two OPO processes in fundamental radiation. Furthermore, the ratio between the length of GTR-KTP and KTA has also been specially designed to satisfy the same OPO thresholds. The synchronized dual-wavelength lasing with the power ratio of 1: 1 between 1534 and 1572 nm was successfully realized. At an incident LD pump power of 7 W, the maximum total output power of 460 mW was achieved, with the corresponding pulse width and repetition rate measured to be 3.9 ns and 5.5 kHz, respectively. Abstract:Non-critical phase-matching KTP OPO pumped by single-cell-SBS and dual-cell SBS phase-conjugation beam, which is generated by backward stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) on Nd:YAG laser as pumping source, is presented together with the maximum output energy 21 .6mJ and the corresponding conversion efficiency 32%. And it has obtained tunable pulse-width ranging from less than ins to 6ns and comparatively high conversion efficiency with a low-power pumping laser. The output character of this OPO is also analyzed with experiment results according to characteristics of long-pulse pumping OPO.

Abstract:This paper reports on a high-repetition-rate dual signal-wave (DSW) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating at the 1.5μm band with tunable wavelength intervals from 2.5nm to 69.1nm. Two periodically poled crystals, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with multiple gratings and a single grating MgO-doped PPLN (PPMgOLN), are cascaded in the same OPO cavity to generate dual signal-waves by using quasi-phase-matched (QPM) technique. The pump source was a Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 50kHz. At an incident pump power of 3W, an average output power of 169.6mW at 1489.2nm and 1558.3nm has been achieved.

Abstract:We report a nanosecond singly resonant intracavity optical parametric oscillator (OPO) emitting at 1535 nm. This OPO is based on a type II non-critically phase-matched KTiOAsO4 (KTA) crystal. A diode-side-pumped acousto-optically Q-switched Nd : YAG laser is used as the pumping source. With a laser diode power of 96.3 W and a pulse repetition rate of 10 kHz, we obtain a signal power of 2.54 W, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 2.6%. This is the highest efficiency reported for intracavity KTA OPOs with diode-side-pumping configurations. The pulse width is 5.01 ns and the peak power is 50.7 kW. The stability of the signal power is measured to be better than 3% during 2 h operation.

Abstract:A KTiOAsO4 (KTA) intracavity optical parametric oscillator (IOPO) is achieved within a diode end-pumped acousto-optically Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. With a 25-mm-long X-cut KTA crystal, efficient parametric conversions to signal (1535 nm) and idler (3467 nm) waves are realized. At an incident diode power of 14.9 W, the highest output power of 1.83 W including 1.37 W of signal and 0.46 W of idler radiations are obtained at a repetition rate of 40 kHz, corresponding to a total optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 12.3%. Rate equations model are used to simulate this system, and the theoretical results agree with the experimental ones.

Abstract:A high efficiency KTiOAsO4(KTA) intracavity optical parametric oscillator (IOPO) is demonstrated within a diode-side-pumped acousto-optically (AO) Q-switched two-rod Nd:YAG laser. With a 25-mm-long X-cut KTA crystal, efficient parametric conversions to signal (1.54 μm) and idler (3.47 μm) waves are realized. The highest output power of 15.8 W including 12.7 W signal and 3.1 W idler power is obtained at a repetition rate of 7.5 kHz and a pump power of 208 W, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of up to 7.6%. The signal pulse duration is 32 ns with a peak power of 53 kW. At a repetition rate of 12.5 kHz and the pump power of 208 W, the highest idler power of 3.4 W is obtained with a peak power of 14 kW and a pulse duration of 19 ns. And the beam quality factors (M 2) of the signal and idler waves are determined to be around 2 and 20, respectively.

Abstract:An efficient intracavity KTA optical parametric oscillator (OPO) driven by diode-end-pumped acousto-optical Q-switched Nd:YVO(4) laser is demonstrated. The mode mismatch between fundamental cavity and OPO cavity caused by the thermal lens effect in Nd:YVO(4) crystal as the pump power increased was studied. To lessen mode mismatch, a thermal lens-like cavity mirror made of plane BK7 glass induced by idler absorption was introduced into the OPO cavity. Under a diode pump power of 20 W, a maximum 1535nm light output power of 3.6 W was achieved at the pulse repetition rate of 60 kHz, corresponding to a diode-to-signal conversion efficiency of 18%. This is the highest efficiency reported for eye-safe laser based on intracavity OPO.

Abstract:An efficient intracavity single-resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) at 1.571-micron eye-safe range using a non-critically phase-matched KTP crystal is reported. The OPO is excited by a diode side-pumped electro-optic Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1.064 microns. Signal pulse of 97 mJ and 3.56 ns is obtained under the input electric energy of 2.3 J, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 4.2%, and a repetition rate range of 1-30 Hz.

Abstract:Mid-infrared self-cascaded noncritically-phase-matched (NCPM) KTP optical parametric oscillator (OPO) was developed, generating multiple wavelengths at 2.95, 3.29 and 3.37 μm. The polarization state of 2.95 μm is orthogonal to that of the other two wavelengths. Under 1064 nm intracavity pumping, the first NCPM KTP-OPO can generate signal and idler waves at 1.57 and 3.29 μm, respectively. Then the 1.57 μm is further used as pump light for the second NCPM OPO in the same KTP, generating signal and idler waves at 2.95 and 3.37 μm. Broadband spectral feedback condition is established between the OPO cavity mirrors, enabling the two NCPM OPOs to operate simultaneously in the same KTP and OPO resonator. With regard to 2.95 μm, the achieved maximum average output power and minimum pulse width are respectively 1.18 W and 5 ns, corresponding to a pulse peak power of 56.9 kW with 4.2 kHz repetition rate. As for the dual-wavelength at 3.29 and 3.37 μm, the maximum total average output power is 0.22 W. Our work provides an effective scheme to obtain multiple wavelength laser output in 3 μm region with orthogonal polarization state.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high efficiency mid-infrared laser source based on optical parametric oscillator (OPO) assisted by an intracavity optical parametric amplification (OPA). The OPA-assisted-OPO scheme was realized in one piece of commensurable dual-periodic superlattice in which the signal light generated from the OPO process serves as the pump light for the OPA process. A maximum output power of 508 mW at 3.92 μm was achieved under a pump power of 2.85 W at 1.064 μm. The pump-to-idler conversion efficiency is 17.8% and the slope efficiency is 23.8%, and the enhancements of them are 58.9% and 67.6%, respectively, comparing with the standard OPO scheme.

Abstract:A 1.8 μm optical parametric oscillator pumped by a diode end-pumped acousto-optically Q-switched Nd:YAG is demonstrated. A 30-mm-long KTiOPO4 crystal cut with an angle of θ = 59.4°, φ = 0° is employed as the OPO crystal. 685 mW signal laser at 1.8 μm is obtained at the diode pump power of 13 W and the pulse repetition rate of 25 kHz. Simultaneously, 265 mW idler emission at 2.6 μm is obtained. The corresponded diode-to-OPO conversion efficiency is 7.3%. The pulse width of the signal and idler wave are measured to be 4.5 and 2.5 ns, respectively. This gives a peak power of 6.1 and 4.2 kW, respectively.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a compact fiber laser-pumped multichannel PPMgLN-based optical parametric oscillator (OPO) generating total OPO output power of 15.8, 15.2, 14.2, 12.9, and 8.8 W with idler output power of 4.7, 4.3, 4.1, 3.3, and 2.1 W at the wavelength of 3.43, 3.63, 3.72, 3.83, and 3.99 μm, respectively. The OPO was pumped by a fully fiberized polarization maintaining (PM) ytterbium-doped pulsed fiber master oscillation power amplifier (MOPA) operating at 1064 nm at a repetition rate of 65 kHz with effective pump power of 28.7 W. The MOPA system was constructed with an acousto-optic Q-switched fiber laser seed and only one stage PM fiber amplifier without any free space components, which makes the pump system compact and stable in the long-term. Comparisons on efficiencies and signal wavelength shifts between different channels showed that the idler absorption was the main factor preventing high average-power OPO operation with long idler wavelength.

Abstract:An efficient singly resonant intracavity optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is demonstrated based on a type II non-critically phase-matched KTiOAsO 4 (KTA) crystal. A diode-end-pumped acousto-optically (AO) Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is used as the pumping source. Under a LD power of 7.43 W and a pulse repetition rate of 15 kHz, we obtain a signal power of 0.93 W, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 12.5%. This is the highest efficiency reported for the intracavity KTA OPOs. Theoretical analysis on the power characteristics of the OPO is performed. It is proved from the theoretical results that the reflectivity of 63% at the signal wavelength (1535 nm) is a good selection for high average power and high conversion efficiency.

Abstract:The experimental results of singly resonant KTP optical parametric oscillator pumped by second harmonic GCR-190Nd:YAG laser system are reported. The KTP OPO was tunable in the eye-safe wavelengths range of 1.53 - 1.84 μm or 0.75 - 0.82 μm in the near-infrared region. In this experiment, the largest energy of 130 mJ and the highest energy conversion efficiency of 16.9% with repetition rate of 10 Hz were achieved, while the pump laser was introduced into the oscillator along the direction vertical to cavity axis. At the same time, the beam quality and linewidth of KTP OPO were measured.

Abstract:Coexistent optical parametric oscillation (OPO) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) are demonstrated in an X-cut KTiOAsO(4) (KTA) crystal. The 30-mm-long KTA crystal is placed within a diode-end-pumped acousto-optically (AO) Q-switched Nd:YAG laser cavity to construct an intracavity optical parametric oscillator. Coexistent Raman conversion of the fundamental wave is observed from the KTA crystal. With a diode power of 7.43 W and a pulse repetition rate (PRR) of 20 kHz, a signal (1535.0 nm) power of 0.92 W is obtained, corresponding to a diode-tosignal conversion efficiency of 12.4%. A first-Stokes (1091.4 nm) power of 0.17 W is obtained.

Abstract:A PPMgLN-based optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by a double end pumped Nd:YVO 4 laser for high power laser output at 3.83 μm was reported. With two fiber pigtailed laser diodes for double end pumping, the Nd:YVO 4 laser delivered a linearly polarized pulsed emission output at 1064 nm with an average power of 23.5 W at a repetition rate of 25 kHz. With the Nd:YVO 4 laser as the pump source, a PPMgLN-based OPO was developed and a mid-infrared laser output of 3.54 W at 3.83 μm was obtained. The total slope efficiency was 65.2%, and the slope efficiency from the 1.064 μm to 3.83 μm conversion was 18.1%. This system features a tight structure, relatively low cost and strong practicability. It can work stably with a power variation less than 4% within 4 hours.
