Abstract:A novel nonlinear frequency conversion process was demonstrated to realize the synchronized dual-wavelength emissions at 1534 and 1572 nm by the mixed optical parametric oscillation (OPO) conversion in gray-tracking-resistance KTP (GTR-KTP) and KTA crystals. Both the two crystals were inserted into the diode-pumped Nd:YAG/Cr4+:YAG fundamental resonator, with their Y axes perpendicular to each other. This could eliminate the competition of the two OPO processes in fundamental radiation. Furthermore, the ratio between the length of GTR-KTP and KTA has also been specially designed to satisfy the same OPO thresholds. The synchronized dual-wavelength lasing with the power ratio of 1: 1 between 1534 and 1572 nm was successfully realized. At an incident LD pump power of 7 W, the maximum total output power of 460 mW was achieved, with the corresponding pulse width and repetition rate measured to be 3.9 ns and 5.5 kHz, respectively. Abstract:A high-power single-frequency 1178 nm continuous-wave laser is generated in a two-stage stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-suppressed all-polarization-maintaining Raman fiber amplifier pumped by 1120 nm fiber lasers. A polarization-extinction-ratio of 30 dB is achieved due to the all-polarization-maintaining configuration and the polarization dependence gain of Raman scattering. Single-pass frequency doubling with a homemade periodically poled near-stoichiometric LiT alpha O-3 crystal (PPSLT) produces an up to 7 W narrow-linewidth laser at 589 nm. The thermally induced dephasing effect is found to be the key issue for improving second-harmonic efficiency. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this work, a double-end diffusion bonded Nd:YVO4 self-Raman laser was designed to drive an intracavity, noncritically-phase-matched KTiOAsO4 (KTA) optical parametric oscillator (OPO). Both conversion efficiency and output power at 1.7 µm (the wavelength of the OPO signal field) were improved by effectively reducing the thermal lens effect and increasing the effective length of self-Raman medium. At an incident pump power of 15.4 W, the output power for 1742 nm output laser reached 2.16 W with a conversion efficiency of 14%, and the output having a pulse width of 10.5 ns and a pulse repetition frequency of 90 kHz. The competition between the OPO and cascaded Raman laser was observed when the incident pump power was above 12.4 W. The results highlight that in order to improve output power at 1742 nm, it is critical that both the cascaded, second-Stokes field at 1313 nm and the signal field generated at 1534 nm from the 1064 nm field driving the KTA-OPO be minimized, if not completely suppressed. This laser system combining the processes of stimulated Raman scattering and optical parametric oscillation for the generation of laser emission at 1742 nm may find significant application across a broad range of fields including biological engineering, laser therapy, optical coherence tomography and for the generation of mid-infrared laser wavelengths.

Abstract:The methods to generate terahertz(THz)waves can be divided into electronics and photonics.We use nonlinear optical difference frequency generation to obtain THz waves which belongs to photonics method.It is portable and run at room temperature,with high power and low cost.A simultaneous dual-wavelength quasi-continuous wave(CW)laser-diode-end-pumped Nd∶YAG laser polarized operating at 1319 nm and 1338 nm has been demonstrated and the laser at 1064 nm is suppressed successfully.A total polarized quasi-CW output power of 2.22 W is obtained at a pump power of 20 W with a pulse repetition rate of 50 kHz,and the slope efficiency is 12.72%.The corresponding pulse width is 71.91 ns.The beam quality factor M2 is as low as 1.165 and the instability of the output power is less than 0.487% at the polarized wave output power of 2.17 W.Using the simultaneous dual-wavelength laser,the highly coherent THz wave radiation of 3.23 THz will be generated by nonlinear optical difference frequency method in DAST(4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate)crystal.The ideal output peak power is 4.71 mW.The simultaneous dual-wavelength laser provides theoretically basis for generating highly coherent terahertz wave radiation by nonlinear optical difference frequency method.

Abstract:Mid-infrared self-cascaded noncritically-phase-matched (NCPM) KTP optical parametric oscillator (OPO) was developed, generating multiple wavelengths at 2.95, 3.29 and 3.37 μm. The polarization state of 2.95 μm is orthogonal to that of the other two wavelengths. Under 1064 nm intracavity pumping, the first NCPM KTP-OPO can generate signal and idler waves at 1.57 and 3.29 μm, respectively. Then the 1.57 μm is further used as pump light for the second NCPM OPO in the same KTP, generating signal and idler waves at 2.95 and 3.37 μm. Broadband spectral feedback condition is established between the OPO cavity mirrors, enabling the two NCPM OPOs to operate simultaneously in the same KTP and OPO resonator. With regard to 2.95 μm, the achieved maximum average output power and minimum pulse width are respectively 1.18 W and 5 ns, corresponding to a pulse peak power of 56.9 kW with 4.2 kHz repetition rate. As for the dual-wavelength at 3.29 and 3.37 μm, the maximum total average output power is 0.22 W. Our work provides an effective scheme to obtain multiple wavelength laser output in 3 μm region with orthogonal polarization state.

Abstract:We demonstrated a high-peak-power orthogonally polarized multi-wavelength laser at 1.6-1.7 µm based on the intracavity cascaded nonlinear optical frequency conversion (CNOFC). This CNOFC can be characterized by a configuration of "series-parallel optical circuit", where the OPO pumped Raman conversion operates in the "series-mode" and orthogonally-polarized waves are simultaneously converted in the "parallel-mode". The fundamental wave at 1064 nm was first simultaneously converted to orthogonally-polarized 1534 and 1572 nm by the x-cut KTA and KTP optical parametric oscillation (OPO), respectively. Then the x-cut KTA and KTP acted as the Raman crystal to each other with the X(ZZ)X Raman configuration, converting the OPO signals to multi-order Raman emissions with the wavelengths at 1601, 1632, 1673, 1697, 1752 and 1767nm. A maximum total average output power of 1.2 W and a minimum pulse width of 10.5 ns were achieved from this CNOFC-based laser, corresponding to a pulse peak power of 28.5 kW and a pulse energy of 0.3 mJ.

Abstract:A diode-end-pumped Nd:YAG dual-wavelength laser operating at 1319 and 1338 nm is demonstrated. The maximum average output power of the quasi-continuous wave linearly polarized dual-wavelength laser is obtained to be 2.1 W at a repetition rate of 50 kHz with an output power instability of less than 0.38% and beam quality factor M(2) of 1.45. Using the two lines, the highly coherent and narrow linewidth terahertz radiation of 3.23 THz can be generated in an organic 4-N, N-dimethylamino-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) crystal. Meanwhile, the multi-wavelength red laser at 659.5, 664 and 669 nm is generated by frequency doubling and sum frequency processes in a lithium triborate (LBO) crystal. The average red laser output power is enhanced up to 1.625 W at a repetition rate of 15 kHz with an output power instability of better than 0.53% and beam quality factor M(2) of 6.05. Using the three lines, it is possible to generate the multi-wavelength THz radiation of 3.3, 3.43 and 6.73 THz in an appropriate difference frequency crystal.

Abstract:Coexistent optical parametric oscillation (OPO) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) are demonstrated in an X-cut KTiOAsO(4) (KTA) crystal. The 30-mm-long KTA crystal is placed within a diode-end-pumped acousto-optically (AO) Q-switched Nd:YAG laser cavity to construct an intracavity optical parametric oscillator. Coexistent Raman conversion of the fundamental wave is observed from the KTA crystal. With a diode power of 7.43 W and a pulse repetition rate (PRR) of 20 kHz, a signal (1535.0 nm) power of 0.92 W is obtained, corresponding to a diode-tosignal conversion efficiency of 12.4%. A first-Stokes (1091.4 nm) power of 0.17 W is obtained.

Abstract:We demonstrate a tunable dual-wavelength laser with two Stokes cavities by combining two stimulated polariton scattering (SPS) effects. The 1064 nm laser is initially generated through diode-side-pumping a Nd:YAG laser crystal. Subsequently, the first Stokes wave is obtained using a MgO:LiNbO 3 crystal, and its wavelength can be continuously tunable. Once the first Stokes wave within the cavity reaches a sufficient strength, it can further interact with MgO:LiNbO 3 to produce cascaded SPS. The second Stokes wave is also continuously tunable by adjusting the angle between two Stokes cavities. This dual-wavelength laser offers flexible tunability as two Stokes waves oscillate in separate cavities. The optimal wavelengths of this dual-wavelength laser were 1073.7 nm and 1083.1 nm, with maximum output power of 560 mW and 610 mW respectively at a pump power of 52 W. The cascaded SPS offers a promising approach to extend the laser spectrum through the utilization of diverse laser crystals and nonlinear crystals.

Abstract:The electro-optic characteristics of the KTP crystal are analyzed in detail and Q-switched operation of a diode-laser-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser is reported using an intracavity KTP crystal. The KTP crystal was used as both an electro-optic Q-switcher and a frequency-doubling crystal in type II phase matching for generating pulsed green beams. Compared with the conventional frequency-doubling and Q-switching configuration where a Q-switcher and a frequency-doubling crystal was needed, low loss and high efficiency characteristics were realized by only using KTP crystal in our experimental setup. With the new type of KTP crystal doped particular element, the great green pulsed output was obtained continuously for a long time with no sign of electrochromic damage. In this paper, we demonstrasted a relatively new and compact intracavity frequency-doubled and Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser. The short-cavity laser was longitudinally pumped with a diode laser.

Abstract:The interrelation between the phase matching condition for second harmonic generation (SHG) and the electro-optic Q-switching in KTP was numerically analyzed. A diode-pumped Q-switched Nd:YVO4/KTP green laser was reported, where the KTP crystal was simultaneously used as both an electro-optic Q-switcher and a frequency-doubling crystal in type II phase matching. Compared with the conventional frequency-doubling and Q-switching configuration, low loss and high efficiency characteristics were realized by using a single KTP crystal. The Q-switched green laser pulse with a peak power of 762 W and a pulse width of 12 ns was obtained with 1 W pump power.

Abstract:We report an actively Q-switched Nd:YVO4/YVO4 intracavity Raman laser at second-Stokes wavelength of 1313.6 nm, which is capable of operating efficiently under pulse repetition frequency higher than 80 kHz. A folded coupled cavity is adopted to optimize the fundamental and the Stokes resonators individually and make full use of the high pump intensity on the Raman crystal. With relatively high output coupling of 82% at 1313 nm, the average output power of 5.16 W at 1313 nm is achieved under the incident pump power of 36.7 W. The cascaded Raman emission at both the first- and second-Stokes wavelength of 1176 and 1313 nm is investigated to discuss the optimization of the second-Stokes generation. Abstract:A novel scheme was developed for a diode-pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YVO4/KGW Raman laser at 589 nm with a diode-to-orange conversion efficiency reaching 11.4%. The compact near-concentric cavity was designed to achieve the criterion of good passive Q-switching and to contain a coupled resonator for intracavity stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and second harmonic generation (SHG). The dependence of the output performance on the initial transmission of the saturable absorber was explored in detail. Furthermore, the output performance was studied by considering the influence of the pump-to-mode size ratio. By using an initial transmission of 50%, the highest pulse energy and peak power were 110 μJ and 118 kW, respectively, at a pump duration of 40 μs and a pump frequency of 10 kHz.

Abstract:We report on a diode-pumped, Q-switched intracavity-Raman-shifted Nd-doped yttrium-aluminum-perovskite (Nd:YAP) laser using potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) or potassium titanyl arsenate (KTA) nonlinear crystals to produce eye-safe radiation. In both cases, we obtained simultaneous laser emission at two wavelengths corresponding to distinct Raman gain peaks and different Stokes orders for the nonlinear crystal used. From the Nd:YAP/KTP laser source, we obtained 3 ns pulses of combined 21 kW peak power at 1478 and 1503 nm. From the Nd:YAP/KTA laser source, we obtained up to 220 mW total average output power, equally split between 1474 and 1480 nm emission lines.

Abstract:In this paper, a picosecond synchronously pumped solid-state Raman laser with KGW crystal is theoretically studied and numerically simulated. The output pulse waveforms and Raman output characteristics are compared when pumping wavelengths are 532 nm and 1064 nm, respectively. The transient nonlinear coupling equations of stimulated Raman scattering are adopted, and solved numerically. The effects of Raman cavity length detuning, output mirror reflectivity, pumping power, Raman crystal length and pumping pulse width on the conversion of the 1st Stokes pulse are investigated. The simulation results show that the performance of 532 nm synchronously pumped solid-state Raman laser is much better than that of 1064 nm in terms of optical conversion efficiency, pulse width compression, output power and so on, due to higher Raman gain and dispersion at 532 nm. The principle of transient stimulated Raman scattering can be better understood by numerical simulation, and the results can help design and optimize picosecond synchronously pumped solid-state Raman laser.

Abstract:In this work, we experimentally demonstrate an efficient cw second harmonic generation (SHG) at 780nm wavelength with a first-order type-I phase matching periodically poled KTP (PPKTP) crystal in a ring cavity, the wavelength corresponds to the D2 line of Rb atom transition. The fundamental laser used is a grating-stabilized external cavity diode laser and its frequency is precisely locked to Rb atom transition frequency using the saturated absorption technique. About maximal 6.9mW UV radiation of 390nm with a net conversion of 9.5% at an input mode-matched power of 73mW is generated with one crystal, and about maximal 8.8mW with the net conversion of 12% is obtained with another crystal; the powers in stable operation are about 1.7mW and 3.4mW, respectively. This is, to our best knowledge, the first SHG experiment at 780nm wavelength with the PPKTP in a ring cavity.

Abstract:Continuously tunable coherent terahertz-wave generation from 0.1 to 2.7 THz can be achieved in isotropic semiconductor nonlinear crystals by difference frequency mixing. We experimentally demonstrated a high-power, narrow-linewidth, angle-tuned pulsed dual-wavelength KTP-OPO operating near the degenerate point, which was used as the pump source for terahertz-wave generation. We theoretically studied the feasibility of the cross-Reststrahlen band dispersion compensation phase matching in the collinear optical mixing technique in this process. A theoretical analysis of perfect phase-matching conditions and coherence length for the ZnTe crystal was presented, according to its optical dispersion property.
