Abstract:A novel graphene nanoplatelet (GN)-doped PbO2 electrode was fabricated and utilized to pulse electrochemical oxidize carbamazepine (CBZ) in aquesous solution. The GN-PbO2 electrode differed from a pure PbO2 electrode in that it exhibited higher surface roughness, smaller particle size, larger specific surface area, greater oxidation peak current, smaller charge transfer resistance, and higher oxygen evolution potential. After electrolysis for 90 min, 94.74% of CBZ and 45.15% of chemical oxygen demand could be removed at an initial pH of 3, pulsed frequency of 3000 Hz, current density of 20 mA cm(-2), and pulsed duty cycle of 50%. Additionally, the primary electrochemical oxidation mechanism at the GN-PbO2 anode was indirect radical oxidation and the degradation pathway of CBZ in pulsed electrochemical oxidation was investigated and clarified considering the identified intermediate products and theoretical computations. The results demonstrate that pulsed electrochemical oxidation based on GN-PbO2 electrodes is a promising approach to increasing the viability of pharmaceutical wastewater treatment by electrochemical technologies.
Efficient Degradation Of Carbamazepine In Aqueous Solution By Bismuth Oxybromide-Activated Peroxide Oxidation

Abstract:Bismuth oxyhalide, usually employed as a photocatalyst, has not been tested as an activator of peroxide for water purification. This work explores the potential application of bismuth oxyhalide (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, I)-activated peroxide (H2O2; peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate) systems for the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in water destined for drinking water. BiOBr showed the highest activity toward the peroxides investigated, especially toward PMS. The most efficient combination, BiOBr/PMS, was selected to further research predominant species responsible for CBZ degradation and toxicity of transformation products. With repeated use of BiOBr, low bismuth-leaching and subtle changes in crystallinity and activity were observed. CBZ degradation was primarily (67.3%) attributable to attack by sulfate radical. Toxicity test and identification of the oxidation products indicated some toxic intermediates may be produced. A possible degradation pathway is proposed. Besides substitution of the hydroxyl groups on the surface of the catalyst particles, PMS's complexation with the lattice Bi(III) through ion exchange with interlayer bromide ion was involved in the decomposition of PMS. The Bi(III)-Bi(V)-Bi(III) redox cycle contributed to the efficient generation of sulfate radicals from the PMS. Our findings provide a simple and efficient process to produce powerful radicals from PMS for refractory pollutant removal.

Abstract:A novel electro-generated hydroxyl radical (OH) technique was constructed to effectively degrade the anti-epilepsy carbamazepine (CBZ) representing typical recalcitrant pharmaceutical only through electrochemical method as an alterative peroxone process. The technique involves simultaneously electro-generated H2O2 using a carbon-polytetrafluoroethylene (C/PTFE) cathode to reduce the injected O2 and electro-generated O3 using H2O oxidation with a Ti mesh/PbO2 anode in membrane electrode assembly (MEA). The significant OH formation through the synergetic system of in-situ produced H2O2 and O3 electrochemically could achieved carbamazepine decomposition and total organic carbon (TOC) removal as compared to electro-generated H2O2 or O3 alone. The main influential factors including current density and aqueous pH were investigated to reveal their effect on CBZ removal efficiencies. Under optimal parameters, CBZ decomposition and TOC mineralization could be completely accomplished after 10 min and 90 min electrolysis, respectively. According to intermediates distribution (e.g. hydroxylated CBZ, phenolics, and carboxylic acids) identified by HPLC-MS/MS, the degradation pathways were proposed for CBZ removal by the synergetic system of C/PTFE-O2 and MEA. The above results indicated that this electrochemically synergetic system is a potential technique to further purify the water contaminated by recalcitrant pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:An advanced electrochemical oxidation process (electro-peroxone) involving a dual electrode system was developed to degrade recalcitrant carbamazepine (CBZ). During this electro-peroxone (E-peroxone) process, ozone was electrochemically produced by anodic oxidation of water in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) cell and H2O2 was simultaneously generated by the sparged O2 using a carbon-polytetrafluorethylene (C-PTFE) cathode. The O3 and H2O2 electrogenerated in situ synergistically produce hydroxyl radicals (OH), which are much more easily oxidized than O3. As a result, the removal efficiencies of CBZ and its TOC reached 99.8% and 97.6% after 15min and 90min of E-peroxone treatment, respectively, these figures remaining stable after multiple tests. The E-peroxone process is therefore a promising and effective method for degrading ozone-refractory organic contaminants in wastewater.

Abstract:The anti-epileptic drug carbamazepine (CBZ) receives growing attention due to slow biodegradation and inherent accumulation in the aquatic environment. The application of a gas-phase pulsed corona discharge (PCD) was investigated to remove CBZ from synthetic solutions and spiked wastewater effluent from a municipal wastewater treatment facility. The treated water was showered between high voltage (HV) wires and grounded plate electrodes, to which ultra-short HV pulses were applied. CBZ was readily oxidized and 1-(2-benzaldehyde)-4-hydroquinazoline-2-one (BQM) and 1-(2-benzaldehyde)-4-hydro-quinazoline-2,4-dione (BQD) were identified as the most abundant primary transformation products, which, contrary to CBZ ozonation data available in the literature, were further easily oxidized with PCD: BQM and BQD attributed to only a minor portion of the target compound oxidized. In concentrations commonly found in wastewater treatment plant effluents (around 5 µg L(-1)), up to 97% reduction in CBZ concentration was achieved at mere 0.3 kW h m(-3) energy consumption, and over 99.9% was removed at 1 kW h m(-3). The PCD application proved to be efficient in the removal of both the parent substance and its known transformation products, even with the competing reactions in the complex composition of wastewater.

Abstract:In this study, carbamazepine (CBZ) decay in solution has been studied by coupling electrocoagulation with electro-Fenton (EC-EF) with a novel P-rGO/carbon felt (CF) cathode, aiming to accelerate the in-situ generation of •OH, instead of adding Fe2+ and H2O2. Firstly, the fabricated P-rGO and its derived cathode were characterized by XRD, SEM, AFM, XPS and electrochemical test (EIS, CV and LSV). Secondly, it was confirmed that the performance in removal efficiency and electric energy consumption (EEC) by EC-EF (kobs=0.124 min-1, EEC=43.98 kWh/kg CBZ) was better than EF (kobs=0.069 min-1, EEC=61.04 kWh/kg CBZ). Then, P-rGO/CF (kobs=0.248 min-1, EEC=29.47 kWh/kg CBZ, CE=61.04%) showed the best performance in EC-EF, among all studied heteroatom-doped graphene/CF. This superior performance may be associated with its largest layer spacing and richest C=C, which can promote the electron transfer rate and conductivity of the cathode. Thus, more H2O2 and •OH could be produced to degrade CBZ, and almost 100% CBZ was removed with kobs being 0.337 min-1 and the EEC was only 24.18 kWh/kg CBZ, under the optimal conditions (P-rGO loading was 6.0 mg/cm2, the current density was 10.0 mA/cm2, the gap between electrode was 2.0 cm). Additionally, no matter the influent is acidic, neutral or alkaline, no additional pH adjustment is required for the effluent of EC-EF. At last, an inconsecutive empirical kinetic model was firstly established to predict the effect of operating parameters on CBZ removal.

Abstract:A modified nickel-foam (Ni-FM) cathode coated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Ni-FM/CNTs) was synthesized for carbamazepine (CBZ) highly energy-efficient degradation in penetrating electro-Fenton. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) test proves that multi-walled CNTs were successfully coated on the surface of nickel foam. The linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) results revealed the greater electrochemical activity of Ni-FM/CNTs compared to Ni-FM. The H2O2 accumulation performance tests showed that NiFM/CNTs cathode had higher H2O2 accumulation performance than Ni-FM cathode, and the H2O2 yield of NiFM/CNTs was 5.7 times higher than that of Ni-FM after 1 h of electrolysis. The reaction rate of CBZ degradation in penetrating electro-Fenton process was 2.5 times that of planar electro-Fenton process because the flowthrough process enhanced O2 mass transfer and promoted the production of H2O2. The Box-Behnken Design response surface method was used to analyze the factors affecting the degradation efficiency of CBZ in the penetrating electro-Fenton process. The CBZ degradation efficiency could reach 100%, and electric energy consumption was 0.4356 Wh/L at current density of 9 mA/cm2, pH = 3, concentration of Fe2+ was 0.3 mM, and the through-flow velocity of 60 mL/min. The quenching experiment and EPR test results confirmed the degradation of CBZ was mainly the oxidation of & BULL;OH, and O2- & BULL;is the prerequisite for the production of & BULL;OH. Eight possible degradation products of CBZ degradation were identified and the probable degradation route was proposed. The ECOSAR program was used to predict the toxicities of CBZ and its degradation products, and the consequences revealed that the electro-Fenton process has a detoxification effect on CBZ, but may also produce more toxic organic compounds than the parent compound.
Degradation and transformation of carbamazepine in aqueous medium under non-thermal plasma oxidation process

Abstract:Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a pharmaceutical compound detected in various water resources. With a view to removing this contaminant, the applicability of non-thermal plasma (NTP) oxidation process has been widely tested in recent years. This study utilized NTP from a dielectric barrier discharge reactor in the treatment of CBZ. NTP on the surface of a water sample containing 25 mg.L-1 of CBZ resulted in a removal efficiency of over 90% with an energy yield of 0.19 g. (kWh)-1. On the other hand, a rapid reduction in pH and an increase of conductivity and nitrate/nitrite ions concentration were observed during the degradation. The applied voltage amplitude significantly affected the removal efficiency and the energy yield as the degradation efficiency was 55%, 70%, and 72% respectively with an applied voltage of 8, 10, and 12 kV. The water matrices containing inorganic anions such as chloride and carbonate ions reduced the removal efficiency by scavenging the reactive species. Accordingly, a reduction in the removal efficiency was observed in tap water. The high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) results revealed that both reactive oxygen and nitrogen species take part in the reaction process which yields many intermediate products including aromatic nitro-products. This study concluded that NTP can effectively degrade CBZ in both pure and tap water, but special attention must be paid to changes in the water quality parameters (pH, conductivity, and nitrate/nitrite ions) and the fate of nitro products.

Abstract:Fenton reaction is an effective method to remove refractory organics such as carbamazepine (CBZ) from water streams. Nevertheless, its application is greatly compromised by extra hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) addition and iron mud accumulation. Herein, Fenton-like process with in situ produced H2O2 by biosynthesized palladium nanoparticles (bioPd-NPs) and natural iron-bearing clay minerals is proposed for CBZ degradation. The bioPd-NPs prepared by Shewanella loihica PV-4 were in the size range of 5-20 nm, which catalyzed the in situ production of H2O2 from formic acid (FA) and oxygen. Then the in situ generated H2O2 underwent Fenton-like reactions with nontronite for CBZ degradation. With bioPd-NPs and nontronite dosage of 1 g/L and FA concentration of 20 mM, the complete CBZ (10 mg/L) degradation was achieved within 60 min. Oxidative radicals such as HO center dot and H2O2 generated in our constructed system played key roles in CBZ degradation. Intermediates/products identification and theoretical calculation revealed that hydroxylation was the main CBZ degradation pathway. This work provides a promising Fenton-like technology for elimination of CBZ from environment with prevention of additional H2O2 supplementation and excessive iron mud production.

Abstract:Carbamazepine (CBZ), as a typical pharmaceutical and personal care product (PPCP), cannot be efficiently removed by the conventional drinking water and wastewater treatment process. In this work, the CoS2/Fe2+/PMS process was applied for efficient elimination of CBZ. The CBZ removal efficiency of CoS2/Fe2+/PMS was 2.5 times and 23 times higher than that of CoS2/PMS and Fe2+/PMS, respectively. The intensity of DMPO-HO• and DMPO-SO4•− followed the order of Fe2+/PMS < CoS2/PMS < CoS2/Fe2+/PMS, also suggesting the CoS2/Fe2+/PMS process has the highest oxidation activity. The effects of reaction conditions (e.g., CoS2 dosage, Fe2+ concentration, PMS concentration, initial CBZ concentration, pH, temperature) and water quality parameters (e.g., SO42−, NO3−, H2PO4−, Cl−, NH4+, humic acid) on the degradation of CBZ were also studied. Response surface methodology analysis was carried out to obtain the best conditions for the removal of CBZ, which are: Fe2+ = 70 μmol/L, PMS = 240 μmol/L, CoS2 = 0.59 g/L. The sustainability test demonstrated that the repeated use of CoS2 for 8 successive cycles resulted in little function decrease (<10%). These findings suggest that CoS2/Fe2+/PMS may be a promising method for advanced treatment of tailwater from sewage treatment plant.

Abstract:The Cu-Fe bimetallic composite carbon (CuFeO2@CR) was synthesized by using the waste cation exchange resins as the carbon source to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) by activating peroxymonulfate (PMS). Results found that 91.3 % of CBZ was degraded under the optimal condition ([PMS] = 0.2 g/L, [CuFeO2@CR] = 0.3 g/L, T = 25degree celsius). CuFeO2@CR could efficiently degrade CBZ at pH 3.03-9.02 and maintain the degradation at 83.6 % in the fifth cycle. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) were SO4 center dot-, center dot OH, and O-1(2) with the relative contribution of 35 %, 29 %, and 36 %, respectively. DFT calculation demonstrated that CuFeO2@CR exhibited a preferential affinity for PMS and greater transfer electrons capacity than CR. Three reaction pathways were proposed in the CuFeO2@CR/PMS system, and the degradation could effectively reduce the toxicity into non-toxic. The continuous flow catalytic experiment indicated the promising application in the treatment of antibiotic wastewater. This work provides guidance and theoretical support for CBZ degradation mechanisms.

Abstract:This presents the efficacy of a 3D-ElectroFenton (3D-EF) reactor with active perovskite/carbon black/PTFE microelectrodes for the removal of carbamazepine (CZP) present in wastewater. Incorporating particle microelectrodes in the reactor enhanced the electron transfer and improved the electrocatalytic efficiency, leading to a more effective CZP removal. The optimal operational conditions were meticulously determined, including current intensity (0.05 – 0.3 A) and particle loading (0 – 1.5 g), to optimize the process and minimize energy consumption. The findings reveal that a current intensity of 0.2 A was the most effective, achieving 90% of CZP removal in 60 min and 3.86 kWh/mg of CZP. A higher current intensity of 0.3 A significantly increased the energy consumption (6.02 kWh/mg of CZP) for a total and faster CZP removal. The 3D-EF reactor was also operated continuously with ultrapure water and real urban wastewater fortified with CZP. A remarkable 62% CZP removal after 96 h on continuous operation was achieved with urban wastewater. Physicochemical and electrochemical characterization of microelectrodes demonstrated their high mechanical integrity and chemical stability. Our study underscores the potential of a 3D-EF system as a promising advanced oxidation process to address the continuous removal of antidepressant carbamazepine as one of the more resistant micropollutants of emerging concern in wastewater treatment, offering hope for a more efficient and sustainable future.

Abstract:Carbamazepine (CBZ) is one of most frequently detected pharmaceutical contaminants in water ecosystem, which cannot be removed efficiently by traditional techniques. Degradation of CBZ by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated with organo-montmorillonite supported nCoFe(2)O(4) (nCoFe(2)O(4)/OMt) was investigated in this study. The degradation efficiency of CBZ (5 mg L-1) was 93% within 60 min in the presence of 0.4 g L-1 nCoFe(2)O(4)/OMt and 0.5 mM PMS at pH 6.8 and 25 degrees C, following a pseudo-first order kinetics. High PMS concentration and low initial pH could enhance CBZ degradation. The presence of Cl-, NO3- and HCO3- showed marked enhancement, slight suppression and obvious inhibition of CBZ degradation, respectively. High concentration of humic acid could decrease the CBZ degradation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of nCoFe(2)O(4)/OMt before and after reaction revealed that both Co2+/Co3+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ were involved in PMS activation during the CBZ degradation. Electron paramagnetic resonance and radical scavenger experiments confirmed that both center dot OH and SO4 center dot- played a predominant role on the CBZ degradation. The degradation products were identified by LC-MS/ MS to understand the possible pathways.
Electro-catalytic activity of CeOx modified graphite felt for carbamazepine degradation via E-peroxone process

Abstract:E-peroxone (EP) was one of the most attractive AOPs for removing refractory organic compounds from water, but the high energy consumption for in situ generating H2O2 and its low reaction efficiency for activating O3 under acidic conditions made the obstacles for its practical application. In this study, cerium oxide was loaded on the surface of graphite felt (GF) by the hydrothermal method to construct the efficient electrode (CeOx/GF) for mineralizing carbamazepine (CBZ) via EP process. CeOx/GF was an efficient cathode, which led to 69.4% TOC removal in CeOx/GF-EP process with current intensity of 10 mA in 60 min. Moreover, CeOx/GF had the flexible application in the pH range from 5.0 to 9.0, TOC removal had no obvious decline with decrease of pH. Comparative characterizations showed that CeOx could enhance surface hydrophilicity and reduce the charge-transfer resistance of GF. About 5.4 mg/L H2O2 generated in CeOx/GF-EP process, which was 2.1 times as that in GF-EP process. The greater ozone utility was also found in CeOx/GF-EP process. More O3 was activated into hydroxyl radicals, which accounted for the mineralization of CBZ. An interfacial electron transfer process was revealed, which involved the function of oxygen vacancies and Ce3+/Ce4+ redox cycle. CeOx/GF had the good recycling property in fifth times' use.

Abstract:Electrochemically activated persulfate is a potential advanced oxidation process due to its advantages of environmental friendliness, high efficiency, and convenient operation. An Fe-Cu-S granular activated carbon (CuFeS2/GAC, abbreviated as FCSG) particles electrode was developed and applied to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) combined with electrochemical activation of persulfate (E-PDS-FCSG) in this work. Compared to two-dimensional electrochemical process (E-PDS), the three-dimensional (3D) E-PDS-FCSG process exhibited higher removal efficiency of CBZ and lower energy consumption. The removal efficiency of CBZ and power consumption increased by 96% and reduced by 67%, respectively. Over 98% of CBZ removal rate was reached within 25 min. Apart from the same free radicals in two-dimensional electrochemical process, both Fe2+ and Cu+ on the surface of three-dimensional particle electrodes can directly activate PDS to produce SO•- 4, and the existence of S2- strengthens the circulation of Fe3+/Fe2+ and Cu2+/Cu+. Furthermore, FCSG particle electrode can not only directly enhance the activation of PDS, but also accelerate the electron transfer, and then effectively promoting reactive species generation. LC-MS analysis showed that the main degradation pathways of CBZ involved decarbonylation, deamination, dealkylation, ring opening and mineralization. Moreover, after five cycle experiments, over 80% of CBZ removal rate could be achieved, demonstrating that the E-PDS-FCSG system had excellent electrocatalytic performance and good stability. These findings indicate that FCSG is a promising material and could be used as a particle electrode for removing organic pollutants from water.
FeS2/carbon felt as an efficient electro-Fenton cathode for carbamazepine degradation and detoxification: In-depth discussion of reaction contribution and empirical kinetic model

Abstract:Carbamazepine (CBZ) decay by electro-Fenton (EF) oxidation using a novel FeS2/carbon felt (CF) cathode, instead of a soluble iron salt, was studied with the aim to accelerate the reaction between H2O2 and ferrous ions, which helps to produce more hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and eliminate iron sludge. First, fabricated FeS2 and its derived cathode were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Anodes were then screened, with DSA (Ti/IrO2-RuO2) showing the best performance under EF oxidation regarding CBZ degradation and electrochemical characterization. Several operating parameters of this EF process, such as FeS2 loading, current density, gap between electrodes (GBE), initial [CBZ], and electrolyte type, were also investigated. Accordingly, a nonconsecutive empirical kinetic model was established to predict changes in CBZ concentration under the given operational parameters. The contribution of different oxidation types to the EF process was calculated using kinetic analysis and quenching experiments to verify the role of the FeS2-modified cathode. The reaction contributions of anodic oxidation (AO), H2O2 electrolysis (EP), and EF oxidation to CBZ removal were 12.81%, 7.41%, and 79.77%, respectively. The •OH exposure of EP and EF oxidation was calculated, confirming that •OH exposure was approximately 22.45-fold higher using FeS2-modified CF. Finally, the 19 intermediates formed by CBZ degradation were identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Accordingly, four CBZ degradation pathways were proposed. ECOSAR software was used to assess the ecotoxicity of intermediates toward fish, daphnia, and green algae, showing that this novel EF oxidation process showed good toxicity reduction performance. A prolonged EF retention time was proposed to be necessary to obtain clean and safe water, even if the targeted compound was removed at an earlier time.

Abstract:This research investigates the utilization of a modified Ti/nano ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 electrode for the electrochemical advanced oxidation-based removal of a pharmaceutical pollutant from an aqueous solution. To analyze the surface properties of Ti/nano ZnO, Ti/nano Bi 2 O 3 , and Ti/nano ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 electrodes made using electrophoretic deposition, various analytical methods were used. These methods included X-ray diffraction analysis, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy confirmed the presence of ZnO nanoparticles and Bi 2 O 3 nanoparticles in a layer that is uniformly coated on the Ti/nano ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 electrode. Beside linear sweep voltammetry and Tafel plots confirmed the increased stability and electrocatalytic activity of the modified electrode compared to the initial electrode. Chronopotentiometry and chronoamperometry verified the stability and better conductivity of the nanocomposite electrode, and according to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, charge transfer in the modified electrode has improved by 87%. We evaluated the effectiveness of the Ciprofloxacin removal process by considering factors, such as pH in the range of 3–11, electrolyte concentration in the range of 1–7 g L −1 , and current density in the range of 1.2–5.75 mA cm −2 . We selected Ciprofloxacin as the specific pollutant for evaluating pollutant removal from aqueous solutions due to its widespread use and presence in the environment. We determined the optimal parameter values to be 6.25 mA cm −2 , 5, and 3 g L −1 . Under these optimal conditions, the efficiency of ciprofloxacin removal reached 96.33% within 300 min.

Abstract:The photocatalytic degradation of the model pollutant carbamazepine (CBZ) was investigated under simulated solar irradiation with an N-doped TiO₂-coated Al₂O₃ photocatalytic membrane, using different water types. The photocatalytic membrane combines photocatalysis and membrane filtration in a single step. The impact of each individual constituent such as acidity, alkalinity, dissolved organic matter (DOM), divalent cations (Mg2+ and Ca2+), and Cl- on the degradation of CBZ was examined. CBZ in water was efficiently degraded by an N-doped TiO₂-coated Al₂O₃ membrane. However, elements added to the water, which simulate the constituents of natural water, had an impact on the CBZ degradation. Water alkalinity inhibited CBZ degradation mostly due to increase in pH while radical scavenging by carbonate was more dominant at higher values (>200 mg/L as CaCO₃). A negative effect of Ca2+ addition on photocatalytic degradation was found only in combination with phosphate buffer, probably caused by deposition of CaHPO₄ or CaHPO₄·2H₂O on the catalyst surface. The presence of Cl- and Mg2+ ions had no effect on CBZ degradation. DOM significantly inhibited CBZ degradation for all tested background organic compounds. The photocatalytic activity of N-doped TiO₂-coated Al₂O₃ membranes gradually decreased after continuous use; however, it was successfully regenerated by 0.1% HCl chemical cleaning. Nevertheless, dissolution of metals like Al and Ti should be monitored following acid cleaning.
