Abstract:Blue water (irrigation water) and green water (rainwater) constitute the indispensable inputs in crop production, and they virtually flow through crop trade. The valuation of water for crops is becoming essential for providing not only guidance in measuring both the biophysical and economic sustainability of agricultural water resources but also crucial information for investors and authorities engaged in water allocations. However, valuation of green water has been severely disregarded. Here, taking the Yellow River Basin as the study case, we show the feasibility of estimating the value of green water for crop production considering the costs in production processes in addition to blue water valuation. Thus, the volume versus value of blue and green water consumed in crop production as well as that of corresponding virtual water (VW) flows related to crop transfers within the basin are comparable. Fourteen major crops in current three typical years and four scenarios for the year 2050 under climate-socio-economic changes are examined. Results show that value of blue water was approximately 3 times that of green water for irrigated crops, whereas at similar level to the value of green water for rain-fed crops. Visible trade-offs between the regional volume and value of water used in crop production and that of the intra-national VW flows exist in terms of magnitude in time and space, as well as the structure by crops. The total volumes of the water footprint (WF), i.e., water consumption, in crop production and VW exports changed little over years, however the corresponding total water values was tripled and seven-folded, respectively, due to apple production expansions. Wheat was the biggest contributor in volume of VW export while apple accounted the most in value of VW export of the basin. The considered scenarios for 2050 suggested that the reduced values of crop-related WF and VW flows were more sensitive than the corresponding water quantity. This study implies the importance of managing the internal trade-offs or mutual effects between water resources and economic returns.

Abstract:Water scarcity is a significant risk for meeting increasing food demand around the world. The importance of identifying the driving forces behind water consumption in agriculture and relative virtual water (VW) flows has been widely reported in order to provide practical advice for regional sustainable agricultural water resource management. However, the differences of regional driving forces behind both water consumption and VW flows were largely ignored. To fill the crucial gap, taking nine major crops grown in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region in China over 2000-2013 as the study case, we investigated the regional differences in socio-economic driving forces on both the estimated water footprint (WF) in crop production and relative inter-city VW flows for each crop per year. Results show that although there is little change in total WFs in crop production (∼43.3 billion m3/y on annual average), the WF per unit mass of crop decreased and the crop structure in the total WFs changed greatly. The BTH region was a VW importer with net VW import of 11.7 billion m3/y by 2013 but the roles of each cities were different. Inter-city VW was predominantly exported from the southern regions. The per capita GDP was the main positive driver of both total WFs and relative VW flows. Whereas economic productivity and consumption capacity were inhibiting factors for the WFs and VW flows, respectively. The levels of total crop WFs in agricultural cities were more sensitive to the effects of the main driving factors. The intensity of driving factors behind the inter-regional crop-related VW flows was shown to be directly related to regional role as an importer or exporter. Aiming for a balance between water sustainability, food security and economic developments, the current analysis suggests characteristic-based agriculture in terms of regional differences in water consumption and local roles in relative inter-regional VW flows. Especially for agricultural cities which are VW exporters, reducing water consumption per unit agricultural product and increasing economic production value per drop of water used in all sectors are equally important.

Exploring the drivers of quantity- and quality-related water scarcity due to trade for each province in China

Abstract:Previous studies have explored virtual water flows due to interprovincial trade within China as well as related impacts on both regional quantity- and quality-related water scarcity aspects. However, the driving forces behind changes in these impacts remain unknown, especially the quality-related water scarcity. Exploring these driving forces can provide targeted measures to mitigate the negative impact of trade on these two types of water scarcity issues. In this study, blue and grey water footprints have been calculated under the consideration of interregional trade between provinces within China and those attributed to international exports from 2007 to 2015. This calculation was based on multi-regional input output model (MRIO). Moreover, the drivers of changes in blue and grey water footprints due to trade have been explored through structural decomposition analysis. The results showed that blue and grey water footprint increased and then slightly decreased from 2007 to 2015 in China. At the same time, interregional trade made an increasing contribution to the blue and grey water footprint, and the proportion increased from 28.8% to 35.0% and from 22.4% to 28.6%, respectively, from 2007 to 2015. The roles of importers and exporters regarding the blue and grey water footprint driven by interprovincial trade within China have changed little, and the quantity- and quality-related water scarcity issues of the main exporters have been intensified by interprovincial trade. A reduction in the water footprint intensity yielded the largest contribution to curb the increase in blue and grey water footprint driven by interprovincial trade. Our study showed that an improvement in efficiency of water use from both quantity and quality perspectives is the key to accomplish sustainable water use in China, especially considering the impact of trade on regional quantity- and quality-related water scarcity issues.
Understanding of Regional Trade and Virtual Water Flows: The Case Study of Arid Inland River Basin in Northwestern China

Abstract:Living with the increasingly severe water stress has currently become a crucial concern in the arid inland river basin in northwestern China. Despite water scarcity, water consumption in the basin has been on the rise, due to improvement in the standards of living and a rapid growth of the basin population over the past few decades. We present the first analysis of virtual water flows across all economic sectors within arid inland river basin in northwestern China, the area with the geopolitical importance of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and with domestic importance as a major agricultural producer and trade power. Results show that the arid inland river basin in northwestern is an absolute net exporter (gross exports greater than gross imports). Approximately, 72.3% of water consumption in the basin is for exported commodities, with the biggest export flows of virtual water being associated with agricultural production. The traded volumes of virtual water have been increasing progressively over the years. It is important to note that the basin produces and exports water-intensive products but imports water non-intensive commodities as the basin in northwestern China where the water scarcity is a problem and the environment is negatively affected. This opens the domain question of whether environmental damage in the arid basin caused by water consumption is worth the socioeconomic benefits. We highlight the major role of economic scale in increasing virtual water changes in the basin over the time period of around 10 years. Demand for water use in agriculture will continue to increase as a result of growing population and economic growth. Environmental demands for water will also vie for scarce water supplies in the future. A better detailed understanding of regional trade and virtual water flows within arid inland river basin in northwestern China can in turn help decision-making processes when trying to promote appropriate policy measures, reflecting local water scarcities, water prices and ecological health concerns.
Can Virtual Water Trade Save Water Resources?

Abstract:At times, certain areas of China suffering from water shortages. While China's government is spurring innovation and infrastructure to help head off such problems, it may be that some water conservation could help as well. It is well-known that water is embodied in traded goods-so called "virtual water trade" (VWT). In China, it seems that many water-poor areas are perversely engaged in VWT. Further, China is engaging in the global trend of fragmentation in production, even as an interregional phenomenon. Perhaps something could be learned about conserving or reducing VWT, if we knew where and how it is practiced. Given some proximate causes, perhaps viable policies could be formulated. To this end, we employ China's multiregional input-output tables straddling two periods to trace the trade of a given region's three types of goods: local final goods, local intermediate goods, and goods that shipped to other regions and countries. We find that goods traded interregionally in China in 2012 embodied 30.4% of all water used nationwide. Nationwide, water use increased substantially over 2007-2012 due to greater shipment volumes of water-intensive products. In fact, as suspected, the rise in value chain-related trade became a major contributing factor. Coastal areas tended to be net receivers of VWT from interior provinces, although reasons differed, e.g. Shanghai received more to fulfill final demand (67.8% of net inflow) and Zhejiang for value-chain related trade (40.2% of net inflow). In sum, the variety of our findings reveals an urgent need to consider trade types and water scarcity when developing water resource allocation and conservation policies.

Abstract:Traditional methods of assessing virtual water (VW) trade usually overestimate the foreign VW used by a country as the imported VW can also be re-exported and used by the countries other than the initial importer. Due to its ability to provide better estimates of transboundary resource use, the global value chain (GVC) method can provide more precise guidelines for the global policy debate over sustainable resource use. Here, we use GVC analysis based on multi-regional input-output tables to quantify the embodied trade of virtual blue and green water for China in the major agricultural sectors and agro-based industries. We find that China is a net importer of blue VW (2.9 billion m(3)) and green VW (57.9 billion m(3)) through agricultural commodities. Our results reveal that a large portion of imported blue (37%) and green (17%) VW is re-exported by China and consumed in other countries, representing the overestimated parts of China's VW import use. These ratios are even higher for individual commodities, including 44% for blue VW for cotton and 22% for green VW for grains. This work demonstrates the importance of improved accounting in VW trade to achieve the sustainable use of global water resources and equitably share responsibility between producers, intermediates, and end-users.

Abstract:Nowadays, more than 70% of global freshwater is for agricultural uses. The evaluation of the water footprint of crops is an important method to measure crop production on water resource utilization and water environment pollution. However, little attention is paid to the impact of socioeconomic development differences on the water footprint of each crop. In this study, the green, blue, and gray water footprints of crop production were quantified, and the socioeconomic drivers of changes in the water footprint of crops were revealed. It is of great significance to provide targeted guidance for agricultural water management in Heilongjiang, a province with the largest crop production in China. Here, we show that the total water footprints of crop production (TWF) increased from 62.2 billion m3 to 101.8 billion m3, and high-value areas were mainly concentrated in the west and south of Heilongjiang Province. Over 95% of the total sown of grain crops were covered by maize, rice and soybean, which presented the greatest TWF. The share of green water footprint in TWF has increased, and crop growth is increasingly dependent on rainfall. Furthermore, our results highlight that effective irrigated quota and crop-planting scale for maize and rice contribute to TWF increase. The TWF and agricultural value-added were weak decoupling in most municipalities, indicating the improved efficiency of crop water use; the TWF is growing slower than the economy, which is undesirable. Changes in TWF and agricultural value-added were the same as the left half of inverted "U" of the "Environmental Kuznets Curve", which has not reached the "inflection point". More efforts to control the effective irrigated quota and crop-planting scale while improving effective irrigated efficiency are needed to ensure that economic growth does not come at the expense of consuming enormous quantities of water.

Patterns of dignity-related distress at the end of life: A cross-sectional study of patients with advanced cancer and care home residents

Abstract:Background: To provide effective palliative care in different settings, it is important to understand and identify the sources of dignity-related distress experienced by people nearing the end of life. Aim: To describe and compare the sources of dignity-related distress reported by cancer patients and care home residents. Design: Secondary analysis of merged data. Participants completed the Patient Dignity Inventory (assessing 25 sources of dignity-related distress) and measures of quality of life and depression. Setting/participants: A total of 45 adult patients with advanced cancer referred to hospital-based palliative care teams in London, United Kingdom, and 60 residents living in one of 15 care homes in London. Results: Care home residents were older and had poorer functioning. Both groups reported a wide range of dignity-related problems. Although the number or problems reported on the Patient Dignity Inventory was similar for the two groups (mean (standard deviation): 5.9 (5.5) for cancer patients and 4.1 (4.3) for care home residents, p = 0.07), there was a tendency for more cancer patients to report some existential problems. Experiencing physically distressing symptoms and functional limitations were prevalent problems for both groups. Patient Dignity Inventory problems were associated with poorer performance status and functioning for residents, with age and cognitive impairment for cancer patients and with poorer quality of life and depression for both groups. Conclusion: Although characteristics of the samples differed, similarities in the dignity-related problems reported by cancer patients and care home residents support research suggesting a common pathway towards death for malignant and non-malignant disease. A wider understanding of the sources of dignity-related distress would help clinicians provide more effective end-of-life care.
Virtual Water Flows in the International Trade of Agricultural Products of China.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the economy and population, water scarcity and poor water quality caused by water pollution have become increasingly severe in China. Virtual water trade is a useful tool to alleviate water shortage. This paper focuses on a comprehensive study of China's international virtual water flows from agricultural products trade and completes a diachronic analysis from 2001 to 2013. The results show that China was in trade surplus in relation to the virtual water trade of agricultural products. The exported virtual water amounted to 29.94billionm(3)/yr. while 155.55billionm(3)/yr. was embedded in imported products. The trend that China exported virtual water per year was on the decline while the imported was on a rising trend. Virtual water trade of China was highly concentrated. Not all of the exported products had comparative advantages in virtual water content. Imported products were excessively concentrated on water intensive agricultural products such as soya beans, cotton, and palm oil. The exported virtual water mainly flowed to the Republic of Korea, Hong Kong of China and Japan, while the imported mainly flowed from the United States of America, Brazil and Argentina. From the ethical point of view, the trade partners were classified into four types in terms of "net import" and "water abundance": mutual benefit countries, such as Australia and Canada; unilateral benefit countries, such as Mongolia and Norway; supported countries, such as Egypt and Singapore; and double pressure countries, such as India and Pakistan. Virtual water strategy refers to water resources, agricultural products and human beings. The findings are beneficial for innovating water resources management system, adjusting trade structure, ensuring food security in China, and promoting the construction of national ecological security system.
Virtual water accounting for the globalized world economy: National water footprint and international virtual water trade

Abstract:This study investigates the virtual water profile of the world in 2004 based on a multi-region input–output model. The water footprints of 112 nation-level regions are calculated and the footprint compositions of major water consumers are analyzed. Less than 35% of the global virtual water requirement is provided by agricultural products, in spite of the fact that 69% of the total water withdrawal is associated with agricultural sector. At the national scale, India, the United States, and mainland China are the world's largest virtual water consumers. Per capita water footprint varies from 30m3 for Rest of South Central Africa to 3290m3 for Luxembourg. As one of the major determinants of national footprint, international virtual water trade sums up to 30% of the direct water withdrawal of the world. Meanwhile, results show that 57% of the international virtual water flows is embodied in non-food trade, confirming the importance to take not only food product but also non-food product into account when overall water budget is considered. Mainland China is the world's leading exporter and deficit receiver in terms of virtual water trade (204Gm3 and 142Gm3, respectively), in contrast to the United States as the leading importer (178Gm3) and Japan as the leading surplus receiver (77Gm3). Finally, the virtual water trade connections of China and the United States with their major trading partners are revealed via introducing the index of virtual water dependency. Results presented in this study are of essential implications for policy making regarding water using pattern adjustment and water security enhancement.

Ecological impact assessment of green virtual water flow in inter-provincial crop commutation within China

Abstract:Green water is crucial for to regional ecological sustainability. Currently, there is a lack of research on the impact of crop green water communication on the regional ecology in China. The ecological impact index (EII) and integrated ecological water supply (IES) were proposed to comprehensively evaluate the regional ecological impact of the green virtual water flow (GVWF) of crops. Based on the principle of trade cost minimization, this study simulated the inter-provincial crop commutation within China during 2010-2019 by assigning weights to production, demand, and transportation costs, and analyzed the impact of crop communication on regional ecology. The results showed that multi-year average GVWF among provinces was 216.45 Gm3, accounting for 33.7 % of the total green water footprint of crops. The ecological impact of GVWF varies among provinces and years. The EII values in Beijing, Shanghai, and Jiangsu were all >100, whereas it was <1 in Yunnan and Xizang. Regional management policies for water resources, ecology, and economic development should be formulated taking into account the IES and EII jointly. It is recommended to increase the export of green virtual water of crops and expand the ecological area while ensuring the utilization rate of green water in regions with higher EII values, such as Guangxi and Yunnan. In the future, it is important for district managers to prioritize the quality of ecological development and protect ecological areas from erosion while pursuing urban development. This study innovatively evaluated the ecological impact of crop communication in different regions, which has guiding significance for the trade management in the ecologically water-deficient areas.

Abstract:The success of China's economic development has left deep marks on resource availability and quality. Some regions in China are relatively poor with regards to water resources. This problem is exacerbated by economic growth. Flourishing trade activities on both domestic and international levels have resulted in significant amounts of water withdrawal and water pollution. Hence the goal of this paper is to evaluate the current inter-regional trade structure and its effects on water consumption and pollution via ‘virtual water flows’. Virtual water is the water embedded in products and used in the whole production chain, and that is traded between regions or exported to other countries. For this assessment of trade flows and effects on water resources, we have developed an extended regional input–output model for eight hydro-economic regions in China to account for virtual water flows between North and South China. The findings show that the current trade structure in China is not very favorable with regards to water resource allocation and efficiency. North China as a water scarce region virtually exports about 5% of its total available freshwater resources while accepting large amounts of wastewater for other regions' consumption. By contrast, South China a region with abundant water resources is virtually importing water from other regions while their imports are creating waste water polluting other regions' hydro-ecosystems.

Abstract:The Yellow River, the second longest river in China, is facing increasing water scarcity due to rising water consumption of a fast growing economy and an increasingly urbanized population with water-intensive consumption patterns. The Yellow River Basin (YRB) is divided into three regions: the upper, middle and lower reaches; each with very different characteristics in terms of water resources, economic structure and household income and consumption patterns. Virtual water has been recognised as a potentially useful concept for redistributing water from water-rich to water-poor regions. In this study, we develop a Multi-Regional Input–Output model (MRIO) to assess the regional virtual water flows between the three reaches of the basin and the rest of China distinguishing green and blue water, as well as rural and urban household water footprints. Results show that all three reaches are net virtual water exporter, i.e. production and consumption activities outside the basin also put pressure on the water resources in the YRB. The results suggest a reduction of the export of virtual blue water that could instead be used for producing higher value added but lower water-intensive goods. In particular, the lower reach as the most water scarce region in the basin should increase the import of water intensive goods, such as irrigated crops and processed food products, from other more water abundant regions such as the South of China. Thus, trading virtual water can help sustain the economic growth of the regions within the basin thus easing the pressure from water shortage. In addition, there is a huge gap between urban and rural household water footprints in the basin. The average urban household’s water footprint is more than double the water footprint of a rural household in the basin. This is due to the higher urban household consumption of water-intensive goods and services, such as processed food products, wearing apparel and footwear, hotel and catering services and electricity.
Unravelling the Temporal-Spatial Distribution of the Agricultural Water Footprint in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) of China

Abstract:Quantification of the relationship between agricultural water use and social development is important for the balance between conserving water resources and sustainable economic development. The agricultural water footprint (AWF) from crop production across 11 provinces in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) of China, from 1999 to 2018, was calculated in the current paper. The driving factors which affected the provincial AWF were revealed using the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) model, based on a temporal and spatial variation assessment. The results showed that, with a growth rate of 1.95% per year, the annual AWF of the in the basin was 441.6 Gm3 (green water accounted for 73.63% of this) in the observed two decades. The Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei and Sichuan provinces jointly accounted for 54% of the total AWF of the region. Cereal, cotton and fruit crops contributed most of the AWF, and determined the trends of the AWF over time. With the development of the economy and market demand, the dominant crop contributing to the AWF has shifted, from cereal and cotton around 2000, to cereals and fruits at present. The economic level was the main contributing factor driving the AWF. However, water use intensity was the most important factor which inhibited the growth of the AWF. Irrigation technology and the degree of urbanization also played a certain inhibitory role. There were significant differences in the driving effects among the different provinces. A comprehensive evaluation of the AWF and analysis of its driving factors provides a solid foundation for optimizing planting structure, strengthening water resource management, and enhancing regional exchanges and cooperation.

Abstract:Increasing crop yields to ensure an adequate food supply under water and land scarcity is dependent on intensive agricultural inputs (such as fertilizers, pesticides, agri-films, or energy) which consume water resources and generate water pollution. However, the burden shifting of water quantity and quality stress from producers to importer and consumers through agricultural input production, trade, and consumption have been largely overlooked. Here, taking maize in China as the study case, we mapped step-by-step indirect water footprint (IWF) of maize production, virtual water (VW) flows related to inputs driven by maize consumption, and the resulting burden shifting of water quantity and quality. Bottom-up WF accounting approach was applied. The maize consumption was intercepted into two stages: the crop production stage (CPS) from raw materials to the farm, and the crop trade stage (CTS) from farm to fork. Results show that the national average blue and grey IWF of maize production was 3.91 and 26.86 m3/t, respectively. In the CPS, the input-related VW flowed from the west and east coast to the north. In the CTS, the VW flows from the north to the south. Blue and grey VW flows in CTS caused by secondary flows of VW in CPS accounted for 48% and 18% of the total flows, respectively. In total VW flows along the maize supply chain, 63% of blue VW and 71% of grey VW net exports occurred in the north of severe water scarcity and water pollution levels. The analysis highlights the impact of the crop supply chain on water quantity and water quality in the consumption of agricultural inputs, the importance of step-by-step supply chain analysis for regional crop water conservation management, and the urgent need for integrated management of agricultural and industrial water resources.

Abstract:Increasing dietary diversity while avoiding additional stress on water resources remains a critical challenge for sustainability. However, the precise understanding of the physical water consumption and virtual water flows associated with diversified diets remains unclear. This study estimated the dietary water footprints (WFs), interprovincial virtual water flows, followed by assessing the unsustainable blue WF and water scarcity footprint (WSF) in China over 2015–2019. Rural and urban food intake, waste, and differences between eating at home and out were considered. The findings reveal that China’s dietary patterns have gradually strayed from recommended guidelines, with an overconsumption of cereals and inadequate intake of dairy products and potatoes. Despite a decrease, both unsustainable blue WF and WSF remained significant, measuring 249.61 Gm3 and 807.77 Gm3 H2O-eq, respectively, in 2019. Notably, water-scarce regions still accounted for a substantial portion of unsustainable virtual blue water exports. The diet related virtual water reallocation can offset the water savings on the crop production side.

Abstract:The well-known "virtual water hypothesis" states that water-deficient regions/countries could alleviate water stress through importing water-intensive products from water-abundant regions/countries. Although observed trading patterns do often not support this hypothesis, there is a lack of research to explore the reasons why trade patterns often do not support the intuitive virtual water hypothesis. To fill this important gap, we introduce comparative advantage theory in a quantitative way to track the driving forces of net virtual water export based on the spatial-temporal distribution of resource productivity and opportunity costs of land, labor and water use in agricultural and non-agricultural sectors across Chinese provinces between 1995 and 2015. The results show that regional differences in land productivity between agricultural and non-agricultural sectors are the main forces determining the pattern of virtual water flows across major regions, and other resources such as labor and water have played only a limited role. Our study shows that the current market forces reflect the scarcity of land resources, but does not reflect the water scarcity in the context of interregional trade in China. Our findings suggest that the ongoing efforts to increase land productivity of agriculture in the southern regions would contribute to reducing water scarcity in the North and Northeast China Plain.
Spatiotemporal supply-demand characteristics and economic benefits of crop water footprint in the semi-arid region

Abstract:The notion of water footprint provides a novel perspective for understanding the relationship between physical water and virtual water, especially in agricultural production. In this study, with the help of CROPWAT 8.0 model, we estimate the water footprint requirement (WFr) of main crops production for 2005, 2010 and 2015 in Zhangjiakou city, an extreme water shortage region in northern China, and three new indicators are introduced, i.e., green water footprint occupancy rate (GWFor), blue water footprint deficit (BWFd), and virtual water consumption per output value (VWV). The results show that the total WFr increased from 1.671 billion m3 to 1.852 billion m3 during the study period, of which the green water was always about twice as the blue water. Cereals, as the main staple food, had the largest WFr, while the WFr of potatoes increased the fastest, which was the result of large-scale planting in recent years. The spatial characteristics of the GWFor and BWFd are mostly controlled by altitude, that is, the GWFor was less than 50% in higher altitude Bashang area, while it was more than 50% in lower altitude Baxia area, and the BWFd was generally smaller in the Bashang area than in the Baxia area. Due to differences in crop types and geographic location, higher food yields does not absolutely mean higher economic benefits. Therefore, it is vital to consider from two perspectives (food yields priority or economic benefits priority) to formulate a reasonable water footprint utilization policy. This study is expected to broaden crop water footprint research and make a contribution to sustainable water management.

Tension of Agricultural Land and Water Use in China's Trade: Tele-Connections, Hidden Drivers and Potential Solutions

Abstract:Interregional trade can potentially extend the management of scarce resources beyond a region's territory along supply chains. Here we combined the multiregional input-output model with structural decomposition analysis to reveal the distant connections of agricultural land and water use as well as the drivers behind their variations in China. Our results show that trade-embodied agricultural land use increase by 2.3-fold and 2.5-fold for virtual agricultural water use flows from 2002 to 2012. The water-starved northern China with abundant agricultural land is the main exporter of virtual (also called trade-embodied) agricultural land and water. Moreover, the role of the virtual water use importers and exporters were determined by the availability of land, rather than water resources. Based on scenario analysis, we found that if agricultural water use efficiency of north China reached the world's top-level but agricultural land use efficiency remained unchanged, the virtual water flows would be reduced by 32% and only water resources, not agricultural land, would be able to sustain future economic development. Our findings may provide significant information for potential solutions to China's regional water shortage from a land-water nexus perspective.
