Abstract:Bruno Touschek's life as a physicist spanned the period from World War II to the 1970s. He was a key figure in the developments of electron-positron colliders, storage rings, and gave important contributions to theoretical high energy physics. Storage rings, initially developed for high energy physics, are being widely used in many countries as synchrotron radiation sources and are a tool for research in physics, chemistry, biology environmental sciences and cultural heritage studies. We describe Touschek's life in Austria, where he was born, Germany, where he participated to the construction of a betatron during WWII, and Italy, where he proposed and led to completion the first electron-positron storage ring in 1960, in Frascati. We highlight how his central European culture influenced his life style and work, and his main contributions to physics, such as the discovery of the Touschek effect and beam instabilities in the larger storage ring ADONE.

Abstract:We describe the road which led to the construction and exploitation of electron positron colliders, hightlighting how the young physics student Bruno Touschek met the Norwegian engineer Rolf Wideroe in Germany, during WWII, and collaborated in building the 15 MeV betatron, a secret project directed by Wideroe and financed by the Ministry of Aviation of the Reich. This is how Bruno Touschek learnt the science of making particle accelerators and was ready, many years later, to propose and build AdA, the first electron positron collider, in Frascati, Italy, in 1960. We shall then see how AdA was brought from Frascati to Orsay, in France. Taking advantage of the Orsay Linear Accelerator as injector, the Franco-Italian team was able to prove that collisions had taken place, opening the way to the use of particle colliders as a mean to explore high energy physics.

Abstract:Raoul Gatto and Bruno Touschek's collaboration in the establishment of electron positron colliders as a fundamental discovery tool in particle physics will be illustrated. In particular, we will tell the little-known story of how Gatto and Touschek's pioneering vision combined to provide the theoretical foundations for AdA, the first matter-antimatter collider, and how their friendship with Wolfgang Pauli and Gerhard Lüders was crucial to their understanding of the CPT theorem, the basis for AdA's success. We will see how these two exceptional scientists shaped physics between Rome and Frascati, from the proposal to build AdA and, soon after in 1961, the larger machine ADONE, to the discovery of the $J/\Psi$ particle in 1974. We will also highlight Gatto and Touschek's contribution in mentoring an extraordinary cohort of students and collaborators whose work contributed to the renaissance of Italian theoretical physics after the Second World War and to the establishment of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Abstract:This brief review describes the discovery of cosmic rays by Victor Hess from the Vienna Radium Institute and the later contribution of Marietta Blau through her observation of "disintegration stars" in photographic emulsion plates exposed to cosmic-ray bombardment. Marietta Blau, a nearly forgotten cosmic-ray pioneer from the Vienna Radium Institute, developed the nuclear emulsion technique for studying nuclear reactions, eventually discovering the disintegration of nuclei through high-energy cosmic rays. Blau survived the Holocaust by escaping to Mexico City from 1939 to 1944. Starting in 1948 at Columbia University, later as a staff member of Brookhaven National Laboratory and then University of Miami, she performed fundamental and original research with nuclear emulsions exposed to 3-GeV protons at the Brookhaven Cosmotron and to 6-GeV protons at the Berkeley Bevatron. Blau returned to Vienna in 1960, where at the Radium Institute a classical β-decay counting facility for radiocarbon dating had been installed, which was finally superseded by the Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator (VERA), a modern versatile accelerator mass spectrometry facility.

Abstract:The history of particle physics can be considered nothing less than a huge triumph for science. Over the course of a little more than a century of effort, our understanding of the world of atomic and subatomic physics went from a vague understanding of atoms, to one that is much more detailed. Early in this hundred-year-long period, we learned about electrons (1897), then how they circle a dense nucleus (1911), followed by the discovery of the protons (1917) and neutrons (1932) that form the nucleus. From the 1930s onward, researchers used both cosmic rays and particle accelerators to discover antimatter (1932), and particles that don't exist in atoms (e.g., the muon [1936] and neutrino [1956], as well as a huge number of others).

Abstract:24 APRIL 1919 · 24 SEPTEMBER 200/WOLFGANG K. H. PANOFSKY was born 24 April 1919 in Berlin and died, working at home, 24 September 2007. His diminutive, Pief, belied his status as a titan in spirit and in achievement. He was the son of the eminent art historian Erwin Panofsky, who immigrated to the United States with his family in 1934 to take a position as a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton; as a Jew, Erwin Panofsky had been dismissed from his professorship at the University of Hamburg. Pief's brother, Hans Arnold, two years older than Pief, became an atmospheric scientist with a long career at Penn State. As youths in Hamburg the two brothers delighted in building complex toys from a Marklin construction set supplemented each year by their parents; among the products was an "automated vending machine to sell candy and cigarettes at exorbitant prices to their father's art history students at their seminars." Early on, Pief developed an aversion to art, but enjoyed and participated in music.On their arrival at Princeton in 1934, Pief and Hans were admitted to the university on probation, not having graduated from high school. Pief obtained his B.S. in physics from Princeton in 1938, summa cum laude, and his Ph.D. in physics in 1942 from Caltech. That same year he married Adele DuMond, elder daughter of his thesis sponsor Jesse W. M. DuMond, and was granted U.S. citizenship, ending his anomalous status as an enemy alien with security clearance. He was swept up in the war effort and wrote his parents, "Our life is occupied by sleep, work, and babies. About work I am not allowed to write, about sleep I know nothing, and therefore this letter will deal with babies."1With Alex E. S. Green, Pief devised an aircraft-towed "firing-error indicator" for the training of anti-aircraft gunners; this transmitted by radio the acoustic pulse from a microphone in the towed banner, thus allowing a precise determination of the projectile miss distance. He then joined the nuclear weapon program at Los Alamos, commuting from Caltech.At Los Alamos, at the request of Luis W. Alvarez, leader of the "detonation" group there, he used similar technology to build an atmospheric pressure transducer that would be dropped with the nuclear weapons at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to hang from a parachute at the time of the explosion and to transmit by radio to a chase plane the pressure wave from the explosion, thus allowing a determination of the explosive yield and the height of burst.At the war's end, Alvarez returned to the University of California Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley and enticed Pief to accompany him. Alvarez called Pief his "secret weapon," but not too often, lest the secret get out.Pief did pioneering particle physics research with the 184-inch synchrocyclotron and 330 MeV electron synchrotron at Berkeley, establishing in a June 1950 publication with Jack Stein berger and J. Stellar the decay mode of a neutral pion as two gamma rays in opposite directions (in the pion rest frame).2 He then worked with Alvarez on the so-called Materials Testing Accelerator (MTA) with the goal of producing plutonium for an expanded nuclear weapons stockpile, in view of a low estimate of available uranium ore for building plutonium-production reactors or making enriched uranium. The goal of the accelerator was to produce a gram of neutrons per day.At the time of the unrest in the University of California system over the loyalty oath in 1949, Pief signed but expressed his dismay and took a position at Stanford University, home of electron linear accelerators fed by high-power klystrons that had emerged from developments during World War II. Pief showed his outstanding talent and energy in working to extend and complete the MARK III accelerator and to carry out a vigorous research program with one of its two beams-the other being devoted to the work of Robert Hofstadter and his group studying electron scattering on various nuclei, for which Hofstadter was to receive a Nobel Prize in 1961; by then the MARK III was operating at 900 million electron volts (900 MeV) of electron energy. …

Abstract:Theoretical and experimental developments in the 1920s that accompanied the birth of coincidence methods, as well as later crucial applications during the 1930s and 1940s are presented. In 1924 Walther Bothe and Hans Geiger applied a coincidence method to the study of Compton scattering with Geiger needle counters. Their experiment confirmed the existence of radiation quanta and established the validity of conservation principles in elementary processes. At the end of the 1920s, Bothe and Werner Kolhörster coupled the coincidence technique with the new Geiger-Müller counter to study cosmic rays, marking the start of cosmic-ray research as a branch of physics. The coincidence method was further refined by Bruno Rossi, who developed a vacuum-tube device capable of registering the simultaneous occurrence of electrical pulses from any number of counters with a tenfold improvement in time resolution. The electronic coincidence circuit bearing Rossi's name was instrumental in his research on the corpuscular nature and the properties of cosmic radiation during the early 1930s, a period characterized by a lively debate between Millikan and followers of the corpuscular interpretation. The Rossi coincidence circuit was also at the core of the counter-controlled cloud chamber developed by Patrick Blackett and Giuseppe Occhialini, and became one of the important ingredients of particle and nuclear physics. During the late 1930s and 1940s, coincidences, anti-coincidences and delayed coincidences played a crucial role in a series of experiments on the decay of the muon, which inaugurated the current era of particle physics. Abstract:We discuss possibilities of generating a Majorana mass for the neutron from topological quantum gravity effects which survive at mesoscopic scales from decoherence. We show how virtual micro-black hole (BH) pairs with skyrme/baryon hairs induce a neutron-antineutron transition which can be tested in next generation of experiments. Such effects do not destabilize the proton. We also discuss how BHs with mix ordinary and mirror baryon hairs can mediate neutron-mirror neutron mixings.

Abstract:PUMA, antiProton Unstable Matter Annihilation, is a nuclear-physics experiment at CERN aiming at probing the surface properties of stable and rare isotopes by use of low-energy antiprotons. Low-energy antiprotons offer a very unique sensitivity to the neutron and proton densities at the annihilation site, i.e. in the tail of the nuclear density. Today, no facility provides a collider of low-energy radioactive ions and low-energy antiprotons: while not being a collider experiment, PUMA aims at transporting one billion antiprotons from ELENA, the Extra-Low-ENergy Antiproton ring, to ISOLDE, the rare-isotope beam facility of CERN. PUMA will enable the capture of low-energy antiprotons by short-lived nuclei and the measurement of the emitted radiations. In this way, PUMA will give access to the so-far largely unexplored isospin composition of the nuclear-radial-density tail of radioactive nuclei. The motivations, concept and current status of the PUMA experiment are presented.

Abstract:In the early 1930s, the positron, pair production, and, at last, positron annihilation were discovered. Over the years, several scientists - commonly, Thibaud and Joliot - have been credited with the discovery of the annihilation radiation. A conversation between Werner Heisenberg and Theodor Heiting prompted me to examine relevant publications, when these were submitted and published, and how experimental results were interpreted in the relevant articles. I argue that it was Theodor Heiting - usually not mentioned at all in relevant publications - who discovered positron annihilation, and that he should receive proper credit.

Abstract:We explicitly show that split-universal extra dimension (split-UED), a recently suggested extension of universal extra dimension (UED) model, can nicely explain recent anomalies in cosmic-ray positrons and electrons observed by PAMELA and ATIC/PPB-BETS. Kaluza-Klein (KK)dark matters mainly annihilate into leptons because the hadronic branching fraction is highly suppressed by large KK quark masses and the antiproton flux agrees very well with the observation where no excess is found. The flux of cosmic gamma-rays from pion decay is also highly suppressed and hardly detected in low energy region (E-gamma less than or similar to 20GeV). Collider signatures of colored KK particles at the LHC, especially q(1)q(1) production, are studied in detail. Due to the large split in masses of KK quarks and other particles, hard p(T) jets and missing E-T are generated, which make it possible to suppress the standard model background and discover the signals.

Abstract:We describe the pioneering contributions of Thomas K. Gaisser to the birth and development of particle astrophysics, a new field of research at the intersection of cosmic ray physics, astronomy, astrophysics, and particle physics that has emerged in the last few decades. We will especially focus on his studies of natural beams of neutrinos: those generated by the interactions of cosmic rays in the Earth's atmosphere and those emitted by astrophysical sources. Tom actively participated in the discovery of these cosmic neutrinos as well. His contributions also extend to gamma-ray astronomy, the study of the cosmic ray spectra and composition, and the modeling of cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere and in astrophysical environments. Tom invariably focused his research on the theoretical and phenomenological problems of greatest interest at the time, producing frameworks that transparently interpreted often complex data. These studies have been very influential and have shaped the development of the field.

Hunting Quantum Gravity with Analogs: the case of High Energy Particle Physics

Abstract:In this review we collect, for the first time in one paper, old and new results and future perspectives of the research line that uses hadron production, in high-energy scattering processes, to experimentally probe fundamental questions of quantum gravity. The key observations, that ignited the link between the two arenas, are the so-called ``color-event horizon'' of quantum chromodynamics, and the enormous (de)accelerations involved in such scattering processes: both phenomena point to the Unruh (and related Hawking) type of effects. After the first pioneering investigations of this, such research went on and on, including studies of the horizon entropy and other ``black-hole thermodynamical'' behaviors, which incidentally are also the frontier of the analog gravity research itself. It is stressed in various places here that the \textit{trait d'union} between the two phenomenologies is that in both scenarios, hadron physics and black hole physics, ``thermal'' behaviors are more easily understood not as due to real thermalization processes (sometimes just impossible, given the small number of particles involved), but rather to a stochastic/quantum entanglement nature of such temperature. Finally, other aspects, such as the self-critical organizations of hadronic matter and of black-holes, have been recently investigated. The results of those investigations are also summarized and commented upon here. As a general remark, this research line shows that indeed we can probe quantum gravity theoretical constructions with analog systems that are not confined to belong only to the condensed matter arena. This is as it must be.

Abstract:Dawning neutron physics was more complex than one might expect. The chance that the neutron comprised a proton and an electron was diffusely taken into account after the discovery of the neutron. Moreover, uncertainties persisted about the composition of beryllium radiation until it was realized that the latter comprised both neutrons and gamma-rays. The interaction of neutrons with matter and nuclei was soon investigated. Both a spatial symmetry, a symmetry of charge, and a symmetry in the nuclear reactions soon emerged. The relation of negative beta-decay to the neutron abundance in nuclei was moreover reviewed. Positive beta-radioactivity induced by alpha-particles was eventually announced, having been foreseen some weeks before. Accelerated deutons and protons shortly afterwards revealed to be efficient in inducing radioactivity. The physics institute in Rome got ready to start research on neutrons, but apparently it only planned to go through alpha-induced radioactivity, at first. If so, it is then plausible that some new results achieved by foreign laboratories eventually bent Fermi to neutrons. Fermi's discovery of neutron-induced radioactivity is reviewed with regard to investigations then current, once more showing simplicity as a distinctive trait of Fermi's way of doing physics.

Abstract:During a series of experiments performed between 1907 and 1911, Domenico Pacini (Marino 1878-Roma 1934), at that time researcher at the Central Bureau of Meteorology and Geodynamics in Roma, studied the origin of the radiation today called "cosmic rays", the nature of which was unknown at that time. In his conclusive measurements in June 1911 at the Naval Academy in Livorno, and confirmed in Bracciano a couple of months later, Pacini, proposing a novel experimental technique, observed the radiation strength to decrease when going from the surface to a few meters underwater (both in the sea and in the lake), thus demonstrating that such radiation could not come from the Earth's crust. Pacini's work was largely overlooked. Hess was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1936, two years after the death of Pacini, who had become a full professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Bari. The discovery of cosmic rays -a milestone in science- involved several scientists in Europe and in the United States of America and took place during a period characterized by nationalism and lack of communication. Historical, political and personal facts, embedded in the pre- and post-World War I context, might have contributed to the substantial disappearance of Pacini from the history of science. This article aims to give an unbiased historical account of the discovery of cosmic rays; in the centenary of Pacini's pioneering experiments, his work, which employed a technique that was complementary to, and independent of that of Hess, will be duly taken into consideration. A translation into English of three fundamental early articles by Pacini is provided in the Appendix.
