Abstract:Developing novel donor-acceptor conjugated polymers is essential to obtain desirable electrochromic properties. Herein, naphthobisthiadiazole, 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and 2,3-dimethylquinoxaline as electron-deficient units, along with ProDOT-Me2 as an electron-rich block, to create novel donor-acceptor (D-A) type electrochromic polymers (pQWL, pBt and pDBt) for the investigation. The electrochemical/spectroelectrochemistry/colorimetry properties-structure of the ProDOT-Me2-based D-A polymers were systematically investigated. Benefiting from ProDOT-Me2 as an available donor block and matching electron-accepting units for the construction of D-A structures, pQWL and pDBt exhibited blue/green-to-transmissive with excellent electrochromic properties. The pQWL and pDBt exhibited remarkable bifunctional characteristics with reversible colors-to-high transmissive states, shorter switching times, long-term stability, good color memory, excellent coloration efficiency, low color chromaticity in the oxidation state, and large area-specific capacitance. These findings highlight the significant potential of ProDOT-Me2-based D-A polymers as versatile building units for polymer electrochromic-supercapacitor bifunctional materials.
Preparation of Multicolor Electrochromic Polymer Composite Film with Laminated Structure

Abstract:Two electrochromic polymers , poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) ( PEDOT) and poly { 4 , 4' , 4 "-tris [4-(2-bithienyl) pheny ] amine } ( PTBTPA) with different neutral absorption spectra and the complementary colors were synthesized via electrochemical polymerization method , respectively. Then the composite film with the laminated structure was controllably prepared by adjusting the electrochemical polymerization parameters. FTIR spectra and SEM images indicate that the laminated composite film is obtained. UV-Vis spectra and electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the composite film exhibits a noticeable electrochromism with reversible color changes from orange , blue to dark green, and maintains good electrochemical activity and optical contrast compared to those of the pristine PTBTPA film and PEDOT film. This work is to provide a simple and efficient method to build the laminated composite structure for achieving multicolor or even full-color electrochromic materials , which is also suitable for other electrochromic polymer systems.
In Situ Preparation and Determination of Electrochemical and Electrochromic Properties of Copper Phthalocyanine-Polyaniline Nanocomposite Films

Abstract:Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) films with different morphologies were electrodeposited on the surfaces of ITO electrodes. Then, in each case, a polyaniline (PANI) film was electrochemically polymerized in situ on the surface of the copper phthalocyanine film to form a CuPc-PANI composite film. The electrochemical properties of the CuPc-PANI composite film were observed to be much better than those of the film without CuPc. With the modification involving the CuPc nanowires, the composite film formed a finer particle surface and an increased interface area between the PANI and the electrolyte. Compared to the single-component PANI film, the CuPc-PANI composite film exhibited better performance with a higher optical contrast (58% at 730 nm), a faster response speed (coloring time of 1.02 s, discoloring time of 1.96 s), and better cycling stability (68.71% of the initial electrochemical activity after 500 cycles, in contrast to only about 48.02% for PANI). Moreover, the CuPc-PANI film shows a new feature that can be used as a supercapacitor (specifically a capacitance value of about 5.4 mF cm(-2) at typical currents). Our results demonstrate that the prepared CuPc-PANI composite film is one of the best candidates for multiple potential applications such as high-performance polymer electrochromic materials and supercapacitors.
Multicolor Electrochromic Film Based on TiO2@Polyaniline Core/Shell Nanorod Array

Abstract:The TiO2@PANI core/shell nanorod array is prepared by the combination of hydrothermal and electro-polymerization methods. A significant optical modulation (57.6% at 700 nm), high coloration efficiency (37.1 cm2 C–1), and good cycling performance (62.1% after 1000 cycles) are achieved for the TiO2@PANI core/shell nanorod array. The improved electrochromic properties are mainly attributed to the core/shell structure, formation of the donor–acceptor system, and the porous space among the nanorods, which can reduce the oxidation potential, make the ion diffusion easier and provide larger surface area for charge-transfer reactions. The data indicate great promise for the TiO2@PANI core/shell nanorod array as a potential multicolor electrochromic material.

Abstract:This paper reports on the linear colorimetric and electrochromic (EC) characteristics of electrodeposited polyaniline (PANI) films. This paper also investigates the infrared EC properties of acid-doped PANI films. The electrochemical polymerization method was employed to create a porous and thin PANI film layer onto PET-ITO substrates. This layer was capped with WO3 film to create a gel electrolyte sandwich structure that demonstrates the compatibility of PANI films with cathodic WO3 films in full devices. The electrodeposition of the film was fabricated by applying different voltages and time, with the optimal film quality achieved with the 1.7 V voltage and a 20 min deposition period. The surface morphology, optical performance, electrochemical behavior, and molecular structure evolution are comprehensively studied in this work. The linear colorimetric behaviors and the corresponding significant changes in the structure in Raman spectra build direct strong quantitative relations in EC polymers. The well-defined oxidation and reduction peaks observed in the cyclic voltammetry indicate the ion-diffusion dominant process in the electrochromism of PANI. Significant transitions between the benzene and quinone phases in the Raman spectra are found in the bleached and colored states of polymers. This study enhances the understanding of PANI film structure and electrochemical and associated optical properties, providing more insights into the dual-function EC charge storage polymers and other energy-related functional materials.

Abstract:The WO3/PANI core/shell nanowire array is prepared by the combination of solvothermal and electropolymerization methods. The core/shell nanowire array film shows remarkable enhancement of the electrochromic properties. In particular, a significant optical modulation (59% at 700nm), fast switching speed, high coloration efficiency (86.3cm2C−1 at 700nm) and excellent cycling stability are achieved for the core/shell nanowire array film. Abstract:Three star-shaped thiophene derivatives, namely TPAT, PHT and TPTT with different central cores of triphenylamine, phenyl and 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine respectively, were synthesized and characterized. They were further successfully prepared into the corresponding cross-linked polymers pTPAT, pPHT and pTPTT via electrochemical polymerization. The cyclic voltammetry curves showed that pPHT and pTPTT displayed the relatively higher onset oxidative potentials than pTPAT. After being applied with the positive voltages in an electrochemical cell, pTPAT exhibited the obvious electrochromic behaviors, while such phenomenons were not observed in the case of pPHT and pTPTT. The theory calculation results together with the electrochemistry properties revealed that the electrochromism of pTPAT may mainly depend on its relatively lower oxidative potential because of the introduction of triphenylamine with low ionization energy. Through the copolymerization with 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) which is also of relatively low ionization energy, pPHT-EDOT and pTPTT-EDOT both exhibited excellent electrochromic properties. Electrochromic functions of organic-metallic hybrid polymers

Abstract:Organic-metallic hybrid polymers are synthesized by self-assembly of organic modules, which have several coordination sites such as bis-terpyridines, with metal ions such as iron, cobalt, or ruthenium. The hybrid polymers have a specific color based on the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption from the metal ions to the terpyridine parts of the organic module in the hybrid polymers. In the cyclic voltammetry measurement of the polymers, a reversible redox wave is observed according to the redox of the metal ions. The polymers have a high molecular weight of over 50,000 and the polymer film is easily formed by spin coating. Interestingly, a polymer film cast on an ITO electrode exhibits excellent electrochromic properties: the color of the film disappears when a higher potential than the redox potential of the metal ions is applied to the polymer film. On the other hand, the film returns to its original color when a reductive potential below the redox potential of the metal ions is applied. Various colors such as purple, blue, red, and orange can be expressed by changing the metal species and/or by modifying the organic modules. Moreover, it is confirmed by in situ electro-spectroscopic measurements that the electrochromic changes in the hybrid polymers show high stability for the operations that are repeated more than 4000 times. In addition, multicolor electrochromic changes appear on introducing two kinds of metal ions to the polymer. We also succeeded in fabricating an electrochromic solid-state device by using these polymers.
Multicolor Electrochromic Polyaniline–wo3 Hybrid Thin Films: One-pot Molecular Assembling Synthesis

Abstract:Nanostructured polyaniline (PANI)–WO3 hybrid thin films were synthesized via a molecular assembling route in a solution of aniline using peroxotungstic acid (PTA) as the dopant and ammonium persulfate as the oxidant. The films show a porous morphology with nanorod arrays on the surface, and WO3 is uniformly incorporated into the polymer network. Electrochemical and electrochromic tests including cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and corresponding in situ transmittance of PANI–WO3 hybrid films compared with neat PANI film and sol–gel WO3 film were conducted in 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution. The hybrid films, being a dual electrochromic material, varied from royal purple to green, pale yellow and finally dark blue as the applied potential was scanned from 0.8 V to −0.5 V. Compared to sulfate doped PANI film, high colouration efficiency and comparable durability are obtained in the PANI–WO3 hybrid films. The PANI–WO3 hybrid films also show faster switching speed and better durability than WO3 film. The enhanced electrochromic properties such as faster switching speed and better durability are mainly attributed to the combining of advantages of both materials and the formation of the donor–acceptor system.
Electrochromic Nanochannels for Visual Nanofluidic Manipulation in Integrated Ionic Circuits

Abstract:Nanochannel system provides a promising platform to create nanofluidic components in large-scale integrated circuits for "lab-on-a-chip" applications. However, it is a big challenge to achieve in situ monitoring on microscopic nanofluidic manipulation of single nanofluidic components in the integrated ionic circuit. Herein, we present a simple approach to realize visual nanofluidic manipulation in asymmetric nanochannels by the functionalization of an electrochromic polyaniline coating, which demonstrates redox-tunable surface charge accompanied by a visible color variation. The electrochromic nanochannels present a green color when behaving as ionic diodes, while the color turns to light yellow in a manner of ionic resistor. Moreover, both ionic transport behavior and color transition could respond well with alternating switch between redox states, contributing to a reversible and stable visual nanofluidic manipulation of electrochromic nanochannels. Abstract:Periodic porous structures have been introduced into functional films to meet the requirements of various applications. Though many approaches have been developed to generate desired structures in polymeric films, few of them can effectively and dynamically achieve periodic porous structures. Here, a facile way is proposed to introduce periodic stratified porous structures into polyelectrolyte films. A photo-crosslinkable polyelectrolyte film of poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) and photoreactive poly(acrylic acid) derivative (PAA-N-3) is prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly. Stratified crosslinking of the PEI/PAA-N-3 film is generated basing on standing-wave optics. The periodic stratified porous structure is constructed by forming pores in noncrosslinked regions in the film. Thanks to the dynamic mobility of polyelectrolytes, this structural controlment can be repeated several times. The size of pores corresponding to the layer spacing of the film contributes to the structural colors. Furthermore, structural color patterns are fabricated in the film by selective photo-crosslinking using photomasks. Although the large-scale structural controlment in thick (micron-scale and above) films needs to be explored further, this work highlights the periodic structural controlment in polymeric films and thus presents an approach for application potentials in sensor, detection, and ink-free printing.

Abstract:There is a pressing need for efficient strategies to produce new colors in electrochromic (EC) systems. The majority of studies to date have been conducted on the development of advanced synthesis routes for obtaining desired colors in EC materials, but they suffer from complicated synthesis and high costs. Herein, we developed a facile, viable, and efficient approach for tuning EC behavior of polyaniline (PANI) using three polymeric dyes: poly(neutral red) (PNR), poly(crystal violet) (PCV), and poly(Congo red) (PCR) films as color filters. PNR, PCV, and PCR films were electrodeposited on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode modified with Schiff base network-1 (SNW1) to fabricate FTO/SNW1/PNR, FTO/SNW1/PCV, and FTO/SNW1/PCR, respectively. To inquire about the effects of studied polymeric dyes on the EC performance of PANI, aniline was electropolymerized onto the modified electrodes. The fabrication of the PANI-based EC electrodes, namely FTO/SNW1/PNR/PANI, FTO/SNW1/PCV/PANI, and FTO/SNW1/PCR/PANI, was characterized using cyclic voltammetry, EIS , FT–IR, XRD , FESEM, TEM and spectroelectrochemical approaches. The EC studies confirmed that FTO/SNW1/PNR/PANI, FTO/SNW1/PCV/PANI, and FTO/SNW1/PCR/PANI electrodes change their color in the oxidized states to pale red, yellowish-green, and blue, respectively, if reduced at − 0.6 V. Combining PANI film with three different polymeric dyes can produce new colors in the reduced state of PANI film. FTO/SNW1/PANI, FTO/SNW1/PNR/PANI, FTO/SNW1/PCV/PANI, and FTO/SNW1/PCR/PANI showed high optical contrasts of 66%, 54%, 64%, and 78%, respectively, at 700 nm. This effort provides a new approach for tuning the EC behavior of PANI and puts forward an idea to produce new colors via organic color filters.

Bioinspired Dynamically Switchable PANI/PS‐b‐P2VP Thin Films for Multicolored Electrochromic Displays with Long‐Term Durability

Abstract:Electrochromism has attracted wide attention as futuristic adaptive camouflage technologies due to its reversible and sustainable optical modulation with low energy consumption. However, limited color control of the electrochromic materials has hampered its applications. Inspired by the remarkable dynamic camouflage capabilities of cephalopods, polyaniline (PANI) and polystyrene‐block‐poly (2‐vinyl pyridine) (PS‐b‐P2VP) thin films are integrated to simulate chromatophores and iridophores in the skin of cephalopods, respectively. Herein, it is demonstrated that the adaptive lamellar PANI/PS‐b‐P2VP thin film exhibits a wide range of color control, switchable vivid coloration, and excellent durability. It serves as an ideal multicolored electrochromic platform due to the combined effect of electrochromism from PANI and structural coloration from PS‐b‐P2VP. Unambiguous evidence shows that optical properties of the PANI/PS‐b‐P2VP thin film are related to the thickness of each layer and nanostructure of PANI, pronounced color changes mainly depend on electronic states of PANI and transition of hydrated SO42− ions between PANI and P2VP. The coloration mechanism is discussed using quantitative analysis via RGB color specification and optical transmittance and reflectance simulations. The new insights will advance the design of reflection‐contributed superior multicolored electrochromic materials, and have great potential in the fields of displays and camouflage.

Prussian Blue-Cobalt Oxide Double Layer for Efficient All-Inorganic Multicolor Electrochromic Device

Abstract:An "all-inorganic", fast, and power-efficient solid-state electrochromic device has been realized by choosing Co3O4 and PB films as complementing electrodes. The prussian blue and cobalt oxide films have been synthesized via a simple galvanostatic method to achieve better film quality to be used in a device. Prior to fabricating a prototype solid-state device, the electrodes have been tested using in situ electrochemical and spectroscopic studies. This is followed by fabricating a solid-state device that shows switching between multiple colors with an applied bias of less than a couple of volts. A moderate color contrast of ∼40% with 1.5 s switching time has been observed with showing stability for more than 900 s of continuous switching. A redox-driven electrochromic behavior of individual electrodes makes it possible for the solid-state device to show beautiful colors with a small applied bias. Electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements have been carried out to establish the possible mechanism of color switching shown by the device. Effects of Chemical Composition, Film Thickness, and Morphology on the Electrochromic Properties of Donor-Acceptor Conjugated Copolymers Based on Diketopyrrolopyrrole

Abstract:A series of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and propylenedioxythiophene (ProDOT)-containing random copolymers with different donor-to-acceptor ratios is synthesized through Stille coupling polymerizations. The low-bandgap polymers display dark tones with colors ranging from magenta to blue, and reveal reversible colored-to-transmissive electrochromism in absorption/transmission-type devices with high optical contrasts (up to 48 and 77 % in the visible and near-infrared regions, respectively), modest switching speeds (a few to tens of seconds) and coloration efficiencies (267-574 cm2 C-1 ), as well as good long-term ambient redox stabilities. The structure-performance relationship of the polymers, in particular, the role of donor-to-acceptor ratio, is investigated, and it is shown that an increase in the amount of acceptor in the polymers leads to slower oxidative but faster reductive switching, accompanied with enhancement of the redox stability. In addition, further study on the influence of film thickness and film morphology reveals that devices with higher optical contrasts are attainable from thicker polymer films at the expense of switching speeds; films with high uniformity and connectedness together with open, loose structures at submicron to micron scale are favorable for achieving good electrochromic performance.

Abstract:Three 4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl-based polydithienylpyrroles (PTTPP, P(TTPP-co-DTC), and P(TTPP-co-DTP)) were synthesized electrochemically and their electrochromic behaviors were characterized. The introduction of electron withdrawing trifluoromethoxy unit in the side chain of polydithienylpyrroles (PSNS) decreases the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of PSNS. PTTPP film displays three various colors (grayish-yellow at 0 V, grayish-blue at 1.0 V, and bluish-violet at 1.4 V) from reduced to oxidized states. The optical contrast of PTTPP, P(TTPP-co-DTC), and P(TTPP-co-DTP) electrodes are 24.5% at 1050 nm, 49.0% at 916 nm, and 53.8% at 1302 nm, respectively. The highest η of the PTTPP electrode is 379.64 cm2 C−1 at 1050 nm. Three ECDs based on PTTPP, P(TTPP-co-DTC), or P(TTPP-co-DTP) as anodic film and PProDOT-Et2 as cathodic film were fabricated. PTTPP/PProDOT-Et2 ECD showed high transmittance change (35.7% at 588 nm) and high η (890.96 cm2·C−1 at 588 nm). P(TTPP-co-DTC)/PProDOT-Et2 and P(TTPP-co-DTP)/PProDOT-Et2 ECDs showed high transmittance change, rapid response time, adequate open circuit memory, and good electrochemical redox stability. Based on these findings, this work provides novel insights for appropriate design of high transmittance change and high efficient multi-colored electrochromic polymers.

Abstract:Multicolor electrochromic devices have gained attention widely. To support the development of multicolor electrochromic devices, we studied complementary combinations of a multicolor switchable polyaniline (PANI) electrode and 1-methyl-4,4′-bipyridyl iodide (MBI). In particular, MBI acting as an electrolyte and cathodic electrochromic layer can not only simplify the architecture of a device, but also support the color richness of the device simultaneously. Wide band optical modulation in visible light (58.1% at 550 nm) and near-infrared light (35 % at 800 nm) confirms the advantageous optical properties of the combination, possessing a wide color gamut range over a range of working voltages adjustable for red, yellow, green, blue, and purple, each having a high color contrast of up to 73.8. This is accompanied by the excellent electrochemical performances of the mentioned combination, such as a fast response time of 1 s/1.9 s (modulating 77 %-colored/bleached) with good cycle stability, and high coloration efficiency of 140.63 cm 2 /C. In addition, utilizing a screen-printed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a masking barrier layer, it is possible to display patterned anti-counterfeit information within the application. Given these electrochromic performance properties, it is considered a readily feasible strategy to utilize PANI and MBI combination to develop novel electrochromic devices, which can be used widely in the areas of smart packaging, smart labels, and flexible smart windows associated with specific application scenarios.

Abstract:Four novel triphenylamine-based (TPA-based) conjugate polymer films (one homopolymer and three co-polymers) were electrochemically synthesized from N4,N4′-bis(4-((6-(1H-indol-1-yl)hexyl)oxy)phenyl)-N4,N4′-diphenyl-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4,4′-diamine (TPY) and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) as monomers. The polymer structure was tuned by adjusting the monomer proportions. The homopolymer contains electrochromic TPA and indole groups in its backbone, while an additional electrochromic EDOT groups are present in the co-polymers. The electrochemical, optical, and electrochromic properties of the polymers were characterized along with film morphologies. Each polymer is multicolored, with electrochromic performance that depends heavily on its structure. The introduction of EDOT into the backbone significantly improved polymer-film-forming properties. In addition, the co-polymers exhibited excellent spectroelectrochemical performance and are visible–near-infrared electrochromic materials. In particular, the spectrum of oxidized PTPY–EDOT-2 covers the entire visible region, while oxidized PTPY–EDOT-3, which contains the highest amount of EDOT, strongly absorbs in the near-infrared region (> 800 nm) while absorbing fully across the visible region. Consequently, PTPY–EDOT-3 is a potential candidate for display and camouflage applications owing to its excellent properties. Double-layer electrochromic devices (ECDs) were fabricated using polymer films and WO 3 as active layers. The homo- and co-polymers exhibit particularly different electrochromic performance. The PTPY ECD performs best. It exhibited a maximum contrast of 36.7% at 720 nm in the absence of EDOT, with a coloration efficiency of 418 cm 2 /C recorded; moreover, it exhibited an obvious memory effect, with a memory time of 20 min recorded at 480 nm. Consequently, these polymers are potentially useful for optoelectronics applications.

Abstract:Carbazole and triphenylamine derivatives have become popular research topics in the field of electrochromism and electrofluorochromic due to their excellent reversible oxidative activity, reversible colour change and reversible fluorescence change during electrochemical processes. Four asymmetric carbazole-triphenylamine derivatives 6a-d were designed and synthesized. Both ultraviolet absorption (UV) spectra and fluorescence emission (PL) spectra changed with the change in voltage applied to all compounds. These compounds were fabricated into electrochromic and electrofluorochromic devices, and these devices exhibited excellent cycling stability (cycling stability remains above 95% after 11000 s), short switching time (1.1 s ∼ 1.6 s), high PL contrast (146 ∼ 172), and high colour contrast (47.2% ∼ 50.6%). All the samples fluoresced off in the oxidised state and exhibited alternating yellow-green characteristics, and fluoresced on in the reduced state while exhibiting a highly transparent and colourless state. The experimental results indicated that these materials are expected to be used for the preparation of wearable devices and transparent displays. The research demonstrated that rich color changes can be achieved by adjusting the electrochemical properties of dual redox centered materials.

Abstract:Color tuning remains one of the main issues for electrochromic applications. Multicolored organic and inorganic electrochromic materials have been largely studied. Herein, a novel approach of color modulation is investigated: the electrolyte coloration. The color tuning is therefore not only due to electrochromic materials but addressed thanks to pigment addition in the electrolyte, which allows endless possibilities. A symmetrical PEDOT:PSS based display and a WO3//V2O5 display were elaborated in order to characterize this coloration process. The PEGDMA/PEGMA copolymer gel electrolyte was processed by thermal polymerization using AIBN and colored using four different pigments. Similar switching times and capacities were measured from one colored electrolyte to another. This easy to set up method multiplies the achievable colors without altering electrochromic device stability.
