Abstract:The increase in the number of readout channels in new detectors, like the Micro Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGD), in the order of several millions, requires a large amount of electrical power to supply the front-end electronics, up to hundreds kW. If this power is generated at long distances from the detector, the voltage drop on the connection cables puts serious constraints to the supply current, to the wire cross-section and to the power distribution. A large amount of voltage drop on the cables, apart an increased power dissipation on wire resistance, determines regulation issues on the load in case of current transients. To mitigate these problems, a new generation DC/DC converter, working in a heavily hostile environment and with a power density greater than 200 W/dm^3, was developed. It is modular, with up to four independent modules, eight channels each, collected in a water-cooled crate, and can supply the load with an adjustable 10 to 12 V output up to 170 W per channel. In this contribution, the design constraints of such a converter are analysed, taking as a basis the environmental, electrical and mechanical requirements of the ATLAS New Small Wheel (NSW) project. Thermal considerations require the converter to be water-cooled, and the dimensional constraints impose the adoption of an innovative design to convey the dissipated heat towards the heat exchanger. The control and monitoring system allows for the full remote management of the converter. Main electrical parameters were measured and are reported. The converter was also characterized in a harsh working environment, with radiation tests in the CERN CHARM facility beyond the limits estimated for ten years operation in ATLAS, and with magnetic field tests in various orientations, using different magnets at CERN up to 1.3 T. A better common mode noise filtering design improvement was implemented after the first characterization. Final performance measurements after the modifications are also reported.

Abstract:The CLEO III detector has recently commenced data taking at the Cornell electron Storage Ring (CESR). One important component of this detector is a 4 layer double-sided silicon tracker with 93% solid angle coverage. This detector ranges in size and number of readout channels between the LEP and LHC silicon detectors. In order to reach the detector performance goals of signal-to-noise ratios greater than 15:1 low noise front-end electronics together with highly regulated low noise power supplies were used. In this paper we describe the low-noise power supply system and associated monitoring and safety features used by the CLEO III silicon tracker.

Abstract:CUORE is a tonne-scale cryogenic detector operating at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) that uses tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of ^130 Te. CUORE is also suitable to search for low energy rare events such as solar axions or WIMP scattering, thanks to its ultra-low background and large target mass. However, to conduct such sensitive searches requires improving the energy threshold to 10 keV. In this paper, we describe the analysis techniques developed for the low energy analysis of CUORE-like detectors, using the data acquired from November 2013 to March 2015 by CUORE-0, a single-tower prototype designed to validate the assembly procedure and new cleaning techniques of CUORE. We explain the energy threshold optimization, continuous monitoring of the trigger efficiency, data and event selection, and energy calibration at low energies in detail. We also present the low energy background spectrum of CUORE-0 below 60 keV . Finally, we report the sensitivity of CUORE to WIMP annual modulation using the CUORE-0 energy threshold and background, as well as an estimate of the uncertainty on the nuclear quenching factor from nuclear recoils inCUORE-0.

Abstract:The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) experiment at Gran Sasso National Laboratory of INFN searches for neutrinoless double beta decay using TeO2 crystals as cryogenic bolometers. The sensitivity of the measurement heavily depends on the energy resolution of the detector, therefore the success of the experiment stands on the capability to provide an extremely low noise environment. One of the most relevant sources of noise are the mechanical vibrations induced by the five Pulse Tube cryocoolers used on the cryogenic system which houses the detectors. To address this problem, we developed a system to control the relative phases of the pulse tube pressure oscillations, in order to achieve coherent superposition of the mechanical vibrations transmitted to the detectors. In the following, we describe this method and report on the results in applying it to the CUORE system.

Abstract:We describe the power distribution systems and grounding schemes built for the near and far detectors of the NOvA long-baseline neutrino experiment. They are used to power the avalanche photodiodes and their thermoelectric coolers, the front-end boards that read out, digitize and time stamp the signals from the avalanche photodiodes, and the data concentrator modules used to receive and format the data from the front-end boards before sending them to a farm of computers used to build the events. The system powers 344,064 readout channels in the far detector and 20,192 channels in the near detector.

Abstract:The CUORE experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0nDBD) of 130Te using an array of 988 TeO_2 bolometers operated at 10 mK in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). The detector is housed in a large cryogen-free cryostat cooled by pulse tubes and a high-power dilution refrigerator. The TeO_2 bolometers measure the event energies, and a precise and reliable energy calibration is critical for the successful identification of candidate 0nDBD and background events. The detector calibration system under development is based on the insertion of 12 gamma-sources that are able to move under their own weight through a set of guide tubes that route them from deployment boxes on the 300K flange down into position in the detector region inside the cryostat. The CUORE experiment poses stringent requirements on the maximum heat load on the cryostat, material radiopurity, contamination risk and the ability to fully retract the sources during normal data taking. Together with the integration into a unique cryostat, this requires careful design and unconventional solutions. We present the design, challenges, and expected performance of this low-temperature energy calibration system.

Abstract:The 19 towers constituting the CUORE detector are an assembly of ultra-radio-pure components made of copper and PTFE plus tellurium dioxide crystals for a total of more than 10,000 pieces. A dedicated assembly line is mandatory to handle and assembly those parts minimizing the risk of recontaminations induced by external agents both during their construction and their storage prior to installation inside the cryostat. The assembly strategy and the tools design, proposed in this paper and developed for CUORE, offer solutions that can be extended to the construction of similar-size detector with strict requirements on contamination.

Abstract:Future far-infrared astronomy missions will need large arrays of detectors with exceptionally low noise-equivalent power (NEP), with some mission concepts calling for thousands of detectors with NEPs below a few $\times 10^{-20}$ W/$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$. Though much progress has been made toward meeting this goal, such detector systems do not exist today. In this work, we present a device that offers a compelling path forward: the longitudinal proximity effect (LoPE) transition-edge sensor (TES). With a chemically-stable and mechanically-robust architecture, the LoPE TES we designed, fabricated, and characterized also exhibits unprecedented sensitivity, with a measured electrical NEP of $8 \times 10^{-22}$ W/$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$. This represents a >100x advancement of the state-of-the-art, pushing TES detectors into the regime where they may be employed the achieve to goals of even the most ambitious large and cold future space instruments.

Abstract:In the framework of the upgrade of the Pierre Auger Observatory, a new high voltage module is being employed for the power supply of the 1-inch photomultiplier added to each water-Cherenkov detector of the surface array with the aim of increasing the dynamic range of the measurements. This module is located in a dedicated box near the electronics and comprises a low consumption DC-DC converter hosted inside an aluminum box. All the modules have undergone specific tests to verify their reliability in the extreme environmental conditions of the Argentinian pampa. In this paper, we describe the validation procedure and the facility developed to this aim. The successful results of the tests on the HVPS modules are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Far-infrared detectors for future cooled space telescopes require ultra-sensitive detectors with optical noise equivalent powers of order 0.2 aW/\sqrt Hz. This performance has already been demonstrated in arrays of transition edge sensors. A critical step is demonstrating a method of fabrication and assembly that maintains the performance but that is extendable to create large-scale arrays suitable, for example, for application in dispersive spectrometers where it may be advantageous to fabricate the array from smaller sub-arrays. Critical here are the methods of assembly and metrology that maintain the required tolerances on the spatial alignment of the components in order to maintain overall performance. These are discussed and demonstrated.

Abstract:CUORE is a tonne-scale cryogenic experiment located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso that exploits bolometric technique to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $$^{130}{\hbox {Te}}$$. Thanks to its very low background and large mass, CUORE is also a powerful tool to study a broad class of phenomena, such as solar axions and WIMP scattering. The ability to conduct such sensitive searches crucially depends on the energy threshold, which has to be kept as low as possible. In this contribution, we show how the trigger algorithm affects the sensitivity to low-energy phenomena and the interpretation of the energy spectrum. In particular, we focus on the impact that the trigger algorithm has on the identification of the coincidence events among different crystals and, consequently, on the reconstruction of the background.

Abstract:It is well understood that modern physics experiments often require more Low Voltage power to be delivered to front-end electronics than was needed in past, and that the most effective and efficient means of delivering this LV power requires that the power supplies be placed as close as possible to the detector. Unfortunately, this means that the LV power supplies must be more robust and tolerant to radiation and magnetic fields typically present in such an environment. Designing a power supply capable of operating in such an environment is not a trivial task. It is first necessary to fully assess and understand these special conditions before one can begin to identify the power supply typology and components to be used. In this manuscript we will illustrate the design process of the CAEN EASY BRIC1 (B & Rad tolerant Intermediate Converter), an intermediate converter utilized to power the front-end electronics (12 V to 300 V) of the ATLAS-NSW experiment. The complete process is described, from design choice, to component selection, to circuit testing from B=0 to 1 T, and finally deployment and testing the complete power supply in an operational environment.

Abstract:The upgrade of the Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) detector, in order to increase the detector rate capability and to be able to work efficiently in high rate environment, consists in the reduction of the operating voltage along with the detection of signals which are few hundred {\mu}V small. The approach chosen by this project to achieve this objective is to develop a new kind of Front End electronics which, thanks to a mixed technology in Silicon and Silicon-Germanium, enhance the detector performances increasing its rate capability. The Front End developed is composed by a preamplifier in Silicon BJT technology with a very low inner noise (1000 $e^{-}$ rms) and an amplification factor of 0.3-0.4 mV/fC and a new kind of discriminator in SiGe HJT technology which allows a minimum threshold of the order of 0.5 mV. The performances of this kind of Front End will be shown. The results are obtained by using the CERN H8 beamline with a full-size RPC chamber of 1 mm gas gap and 1.2 mm thickness of electrodes equipped with this kind of Front End electronics.

Abstract:We present the first continuous operation in a surface lab of BULLKID, a detector for searches of light Dark Matter and precision measurements of the coherent and elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. The detector consists of an array of 60 cubic silicon particle absorbers of 0.34 g each, sensed by cryogenic kinetic inductance detectors. The data presented focusses on one of the central elements of the array and on its surrounding elements used as veto. The energy spectrum resulting from an exposure of 39 hours to ambient backgrounds, obtained without radiation shields, is flat at the level of $(2.0\pm0.1\,{\rm stat.}\pm0.2\,{\rm syst.})\times10^6$ counts / keV kg days down to the energy threshold of $160\pm13$ eV. The data analysis demonstrates the unique capability of rejecting backgrounds generated from interactions in other sites of the array, stemming from the segmented and monolithic structure of the detector.

Abstract:We have developed two arrays of lumped element kinetic inductance detectors working in the D-band, and optimised for the low radiative background conditions of a satellite mission aiming at precision measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The first detector array is sensitive to the total power of the incoming radiation to which is coupled via single-mode waveguides and corrugated feed-horns, while the second is sensitive to the polarisation of the radiation thanks to orthomode transducers. Here, we focus on the total power detector array, which is suitable, for instance, for precision measurements of unpolarised spectral distortions of the CMB, where detecting both polarisations provides a sensitivity advantage. We describe the optimisation of the array design, fabrication and packaging, the dark and optical characterisation, and the performance of the black-body calibrator used for the optical tests. We show that almost all the detectors of the array are photon-noise limited under the radiative background of a 3.6 K black-body. This result, combined with the weak sensitivity to cosmic rays hits demonstrated with the OLIMPO flight, validates the idea of using lumped elements kinetic inductance detectors for precision, space-based CMB missions.

Low Noise Cold Electronics System for SBND LAr TPC

Abstract:The Short Baseline Near Detector (SBND) is one of three liquid argon (LAr) neutrino detectors sitting in the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermilab as part of the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program. The detector is in a cryostat holding 260-ton of LAr and consists of four 2.5 m (L) $\times$ 4 m (W) Anode Plane Assembles (APAs) and two Cathode Plane Assemblies (CPAs), which leads to 11,264 Time Projection Chamber (TPC) readout channels and two separate 2 m long drift regions. As an enabling technology, Cold Electronics (CE) developed for cryogenic temperature operation makes possible an optimum balance among various design and performance requirements for such large sized detectors. Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has been leading the R&D and implementation of the entire front-end CE system for LAr TPC readout in collaboration with other SBND institutes. The front-end readout electronics system includes the cold front-end electronics placed close to the wire electrodes, which detects and digitizes the charge signal in LAr, as well as the warm interface electronics placed on the signal feed-through flange outside of the cryostat, which further organizes and transmits the digitized signal to the DAQ system. An extensive study of electronics suitable for 77 K - 300 K, including the custom designed front-end ASIC and commercial components, e.g. ADC and FPGA, has been made to meet requirements such as low noise, low power consumption, high reliability and long lifetime. Furthermore, an integral design concept of APA, CE, feed-through, warm interface electronics with local diagnostics, grounding and isolation rules has been practiced with vertical slice test stands to make projection of the CE performance in the SBND detector.

Abstract:Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) opens new approaches for the search of new physics beyond the Standard Model. The NUCLEUS experiment aims to use the intense antineutrino flux produced from nuclear reactor cores to perform measurements of the CEvNS cross-section via gram-scale ultra-low threshold cryogenic detectors. A common problem with low threshold detectors is the calibration, since most radioactive sources tend to saturate the dynamical range of the sensors. In this dissertation, a photon-statistic based optical calibration setup has been developed and tested using detectors from the BULLKID R&D project. Both the developed hardware setup and the relative control software allow to automatically perform a full calibration of an array of detectors. During the development of this work, the DIANA analysis framework, developed for the CUORE experiment, has been compatibilized with the NUCLEUS DAQ and a new automatic analysis protocol was developed using the data from the NUCLEUS prototype runs. This protocol proved to be accurate at reproducing the results obtained via a model dependent study performed with an almost event by event inspection that was carried out in the early stages of NUCLEUS. Particular focus was given to the development of an event reconstruction procedure used to measure the energy of events that lie outside the linear response region of the detector. The last activity done for the NUCLEUS experiment was to develop a python based toolkit for the study of the discovery potential of the experiment. This toolkit was originally developed in the early stages of NUCLEUS by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://J.Rothe" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and has been intensely upgraded during the work presented in this thesis, in order to deal with different types of statistical checks and procedures.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:We report on the behaviour of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) developed for muon detection in ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) experiments. The RPCs were developed for the MARTA project and were tested on field conditions. These RPCs cover an area of $1.5 \times 1.2\,{m^2}$ and are instrumented with 64 pickup electrodes providing a segmentation better than $20\,$cm. By shielding the detector units with enough slant mass to absorb the electromagnetic component in the air showers, a clean measurement of the muon content is allowed, a concept to be implemented in a next generation of UHECR experiments. The operation of a ground array detector poses challenging demands, as the RPC must operate remotely under extreme environmental conditions, with limited budgets for power and minimal maintenance. The RPC, DAQ, High Voltage and monitoring systems are enclosed in an aluminium-sealed case, providing a compact and robust unit suited for outdoor environments, which can be easily deployed and connected. The RPCs developed at LIP-Coimbra are able to operate using a very low gas flux, which allows running them for few years with a small gas reservoir. Several prototypes have already been built and tested both in the laboratory and outdoors. We report on the most recent tests done in the field that show that the developed RPCs have operated in a stable way for more than 2 years in field conditions.

Abstract:The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a ton-scale double beta decay experiment based on TeO2 cryogenic bolometers and is currently in the last construction stage at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS). Its primary goal is to observe neutrino-less double beta decay of 130Te, however thanks to the ultra-low background and large projected exposure it could also be suitable for other rare event searches, as the detection of solar axions, neutrinos from type II supernovae or direct detection of dark matter. The sensitivity for these searches will depend on the performance achieved at the low energy threshold. For this reason a trigger algorithm based on continuous data filtering has been developed which will allow lowering the threshold down to the few keV region. The new trigger has been tested in CUORE-0, a single-tower CUORE prototype consisting of 52 TeO2 bolometers and recently concluded, and here we present the results in terms of trigger efficiency, data selection and low-energy calibration.
