Abstract:Electrical resistance heating (ERH) has been widely applied for contaminant remediation in heterogeneous sites especially when low permeability zones exist, yet requires high energy input. To address the low energy-efficiency of ERH using conventional alternating current (AC), pulsed direct current (PDC) obtained by current rectification was introduced for heating to enhance dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) migration in low permeability zones. Here we showed the proof-of-concept in a lab-scale two-dimensional heterogeneous sand system (40 cm x 30 cm) with trichloroethylene (TCE) DNAPL in the central low permeability zone. Applying PDC achieved faster temperature increase compared to that with the conventional AC of the same voltage gradient. The overall TCE removal efficiency from the cell increased from 79.0% to 89.6% with increasing PDC voltage gradient from 3 to 3.75 V cm(-1), compared to that of 9.4-91.1% with conventional AC. The lowest energy consumption of PDC was 390 kWh kg(-1) at a medium voltage gradient of 3.5 V cm(-1), which was 27.8% lower compared to that with AC at the same voltage gradient. These results suggest that remediation using pulsed direct current is a promising approach to improve the energy-efficiency and effectiveness of ERH.

Abstract:Electrical resistance heating (ERH) is a promising in-situ technology for heterogeneous organic contaminated site remediation, yet may have low efficiency when treating semi-volatile organic contaminant (SVOC) of relatively high boiling point. Herein, we chose nitrobenzene as a representative SVOC, and proposed an ERH system powered by pulsed direct current (PDC) with simple hydraulic circulation for improved remediation efficiency in heterogeneous media. The proposed PDC-ERH with hydraulic circulation showed overall improvement in heating performance and energy efficiency, as well as migration and removal of nitrobenzene. This new system improved the uniformity of PDC heating and achieved a temperature increase of similar to 15 degrees C compared to that using conventional alternating current (AC) of same voltage. Nitrobenzene migration out of the low permeability zone (LPZ) was intensified by the dual effects of heat-induced diffusion enhancement and electric field-induced electroosmotic flow, while subsequent removal was enhanced by electrochemical degradation and volatilization. After 96 h, the proposed system has a higher nitrobenzene removal from LPZ (> 97.1%) compared to that using AC (84.0%-95.9%). These results suggest PDC heating coupled with hydraulic circulation was a promising approach for heterogeneous site remediation.
Thermal and chemical enhanced recovery of heavy chlorinated organic compounds in saturated porous media: 1D cell drainage-imbibition experiments

Abstract:Chemical and thermal enhanced recovery of pure heavy chlorinated organic compounds (DNAPL; dense non-aqueous phase liquids) was investigated by using lab-scale 1D cells. Temperature was increased to reduce DNAPL viscosity (and hence increase its mobility), while surfactant was added to decrease capillary forces involved in the entrapment of DNAPL in porous media. Laboratory scale experiments, based on mass balance and indirect monitoring methods (i.e., permittivity, electrical resistivity and optical density), were conducted to quantify the effects of these enhancements. Heating the DNAPL up to 50 °C decreased its viscosity by a factor of two. The addition of a surfactant; i.e., Sodium Dodecyl Benzene Sulfonate (SDBS), at its Critical Micelle Concentration (to prevent DNAPL solubilization), decreased interfacial tensions by a factor of 12. Drainage-imbibition experiments performed in 1D cells provided retention curves (capillary pressure as a function of water saturation) of a two-phase (DNAPL-water) system in experimental glass bead porous media. The observed reduction of residual saturation (Srn) obtained with SDBS was 28% for 0.5 mm-diameter glass beads (GB) and 46% for 0.1 mm GB. No significant decrease in Sm was observed with thermal enhancement. The van Genuchten - Mualem model was found to satisfactorily reproduce the measured retention curves. Indirect measurements of water saturations (Sw) showed that: i. measured permittivities were very close to values modeled with the Complex Refractive Index Model (CRIM); ii. Archie's Law was less successful in reproducing measured electrical resistivities; iii. optical densities provide accurate estimations of Sw. At field scale, the combined monitoring of electrical resistivity (which provides a global picture) and permittivity (which yields locally precise but spatially limited information) is expected to significantly improve the collection of information on residual saturations Srn.

Abstract:The transfer of heat and contaminants by alternating current (AC) and the removal mechanism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in electrical resistance heating (ERH) need further study. The main factors affecting heat transfer and water evaporation in the ERH experiment were studied, and the desorption efficiency, temporal and spatial distribution and kinetic behavior under various conditions were analyzed. The results suggested that moisture content was a necessary condition to ensure effective heating of soil, and soil moisture content above 30% was recommended. Higher voltage intensity and/or ion concentration meant stronger input power, resulting in the rapider heating process and the shorter the boiling time. At a low desorption temperature (about 100°C), the Phe desorption mainly depended on the volatilization of surface Phe and the co-boiling of Phe-water. In ERH, the participation of AC would accelerate the diffusion of pollutants from the internal pores of soil particles and their redistribution with water phase, thus improving the Phe removed by co-boiling. It was noteworthy that AC just greatly promoted solid-liquid mass transfer, but it hardly promoted desorption directly, and the removal still depended on Phe-water co-boiling. The Phe desorption efficiency could be significantly improved from 14.0~18.4% to 59.6~70.8% under the combined action of current strengthening Phe diffusion and co-boiling. Thermogravimetric and product analysis confirmed that no new organic matter was generated, but only Phe entered the gas phase through phase change.

Abstract:This study investigated the influence of groundwater salinity on DNAPL migration and distribution in saturated physically homogeneous and heterogeneous porous media. Interfacial tension (IFT) of PCE/aqueous phase containing NaCl and contact angles through the aqueous phase measured results showed that the contact angle decreased and IFT increased with NaCl concentration, leading to the fact that the wettability of quartz sand can be changed from water-wet to strong water-wet. Three sets of two-dimensional (2-D) sandbox experiments conducted with different salinity showed DNAPL migrated faster in the vertical direction in salinity, yielding decreased residual DNAPL entrapped in the migration path. In addition, the salinity-induced strong water-wet media promoted DNAPL trapping at relatively lower saturation both in the coarse or medium sand, and the volume of PCE entrapped as ganglia increased in the salinity cells. The salinity enhanced the dissolution of PCE from the source zone due to the PCE zone architecture change.

Abstract:Research on the contamination and remediation of Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (DNAPLs) has become the hot field.The aeration or biogenic gas produced by microbes has an impact on the migration and remediation of DNAPL in the groundwater system.Using a CCD real-time monitoring technology,TCE was selected as the target pollutant and then three two-dimensional sandbox experiments were carried out.In comparison to the migration of DNAPL in the saturated porous media,the migration under air and biogenic gas condition have been studied.The results show that:①The transmission light monitoring system based on a CCD camera is an effective and non intrusive method to study multi-phase flow in 2-D porous media,and real-time monitoring of the fluid infiltration process in multiphase system including Water/NAPL,Water/Gas,Water/NAPL/Gas.②gas distribution in porous media is different between air and biogenic gas condition:air was mainly continuously distributed,while biogenic gas was mainly existed in the form of discontinuous bubbles.③In Water/Gas system,the overall shapes of the DNAPL plume become more irregular under two gas conditions;while the overall average distance of TCE plume front was shorten by the air;the intercepted amount of TCE during the migration also became smaller under both two gas conditions.The infiltration of DNAPL is mainly influenced by gravity in the three-phase system.TCE is more prone to displace water of the pores towards the vertical direction,while TCE displaces air in priority towards the horizontal direction.
Identification of a human serum albumin species associated with familial dysalbuminemic hyperthyroxinemia.

Abstract:Familial dysalbuminemic hyperthyroxinemia (FDH) is a form of euthyroid hyperthyroxinemia that is due to an increased affinity of serum albumin for T4. Unlike the many physiologically neutral alloalbumins that have been identified by serum electrophoresis, FDH variants have not been reproducibly resolved. In the present study, isoelectric focusing in the presence of the denaturants urea and Nonidet P-40, without reduction, produced two bands in the sera of unrelated FDH subjects in place of each of the major albumin bands in the sera of normal subjects. One band of each FDH pair migrated with the normal band; the second migrated at a slightly lower pI. The identity of the new bands as albumin was confirmed by N-terminal sequencing. The two bands of each pair were present in approximately equal amounts, consistent with the autosomal dominant nature of the condition, the expectation that FDH individuals would be heterozygous for normal albumin (Alb-A), and evidence that high and normal affinity T4-binding sites are equimolar or near equimolar. Similar findings in sera from Hispanic and non-Hispanic FDH subjects suggest that the same structural change may underlie the FDH phenotype from different populations. The slightly lower pI of the FDH-specific bands is consistent with the His for Arg substitution predicted by a G to A base transition recently reported in codon 218 of the gene for the variant albumin (Alb-FDH).
Comparison of thermal and chemical enhanced recovery of DNAPL in saturated porous media: 2D tank pumping experiments and two-phase flow modelling

Abstract:Pumping experiments were performed in a 2D tank in order to estimate the recovery yield of pure heavy chlorinated organic compounds (DNAPL; dense non-aqueous phase liquids) by varying different parameters: permeability of the saturated zone, pumping flow rates, addition of surfactant and heating. Surfactant was added to decrease capillary forces involved in the entrapment of DNAPL in porous media while temperature was increased to reduce DNAPL viscosity (and hence increase its mobility). Chemical enhancement was performed with the addition of Sodium Dodecyl Benzene Sulfonate (SDBS) (at its Critical Micelle Concentration, to avoid DNAPL dissolution) and thermal enhancement was performed at 50 °C (to avoid DNAPL volatilization). The experiments were monitored with photography allowing, on the basis of image interpretation, to convert optical densities (OD) into water saturations (Sw). Image interpretations were compared with modelling results. The two-phase flow modelling was performed with the pressure-pressure formulation using capillary pressure and relative permeability functions based on the van Genuchten-Mualem equations. Measured volumes of DNAPL recovered as well as the displacement of the DNAPL-water interface (radius and height of the cone of depression) are consistent with the modelling results. Furthermore, chemical enhancement results in a significant increase in the recovery rates of DNAPL. The observed improvement in the recovery of DNAPL with chemical enhancement is due to the fact that: (i) the residual saturation inside the cone of depression is lower and (ii) the cone of depression radius and height increase. Thermal enhancement had no beneficial effect on DNAPL recovery rate or yield. This study shows that it is possible to accurately determine water and DNAPL saturations by image interpretation during pumping tests in a 2D tank in the laboratory. For field-scale applications, the two-phase flow model allows to determine remediation yields as well as the volumes of the cone of depression according to the different operating conditions.
Influence of Flow Velocity and Spatial Heterogeneity on DNAPL Migration in Porous Media: Insights from Laboratory Experiments and Numerical Modelling

Abstract:Understanding the migration of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) in complex subsurface systems is important for evaluating contamination source zones and designing remediation schemes after spill events. Six sandbox experiments were performed to explore the individual effect of flow velocity, and the combined effect of flow velocity and layered lenses on a DNAPL (PCE) migration in porous media. DNAPL saturation was measured using a light transmission system, and saturation distribution was quantified by spatial moments. The experimental results show that large flow velocity significantly promotes lateral and vertical migration of the low-viscosity DNAPL, while when layered lenses exist, the infiltration rate decreases and horizontal spread increases. Migration processes were numerically simulated, and the modelling results tested against experimental results. Furthermore, migration of DNAPLs with different viscosities was simulated to explore the combined effects of flow velocity and geological heterogeneity. Simulation results show that enhanced heterogeneity makes low-viscosity DNAPLs migrate along preferential pathways, resulting in irregular DNAPL morphology. Layered lenses combined with heterogeneity complicate the effect of flow velocity on the migration of low-viscosity DNAPLs by changing percolation paths. Results also demonstrate that flow velocity exhibits relatively little influence on the migration of medium/high-viscosity DNAPLs, which is predominantly controlled by viscosity and heterogeneity. Enhanced heterogeneity has a larger effect on migration behavior. Findings indicate that the migration paths and position of the source zone could change significantly, due to the combined effect of groundwater flow velocity and geological heterogeneity; thus, comprehensive hydrogeological investigation is needed to characterize the source zone.
The Influence of Waterflood Design on the Recovery of Mobile DNAPLs

Abstract:AbstractThis study examines the effectiveness of various waterflooding strategies to recover pooled dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) from the subsurface at an industrial facility. The relative influence of horizontal injection/recovery well configuration, established hydraulic gradient, and fluid properties is investigated for a site characterized by a homogeneous silty sand underlain by an impermeable clay layer. The top of the clay layer is located 5 m below the water table and supports a laterally extensive 2 m deep DNAPL pool. The sensitivity study employs a two‐phase flow numerical model that simulates both DNAPL infiltration and redistribution, including the formation of immobilized DNAPL residual. This is accomplished with constitutive relations featuring hysteretic capillary pressure‐saturation pathways in which the local amount of residual formed is a function of the maximum non‐wetting saturation attained during infiltration. Sixteen simulations, performed in two‐dimensional vertical cross‐section, demonstrate that strategies effecting increased wetting phase gradients, namely increasing drawdown at the recovery drain, adding injection wells, and reducing their distance to the recovery drain, result in an increased DNAPL volume recovered with time at the expense of increased volumes of ground water removed per unit volume of DNAPL recovered. Strategies which do not increase wetting phase gradients result in DNAPL recovery with a minimum volume of produced contaminated ground water. Three pulsed pumping simulations indicate that increasing the length of pump shut‐down time decreases the recovery of DNAPL with time but increases efficiency with respect to ground water pumped. Decreased nonwetting density and increased interfacial tension result in poorer DNAPL recovery with respect to both time and volume of ground water removed, while reduced nonwetting viscosity corresponds to dramatically increased efficiency in both respects.
Effects of Inner Heterogeneity on Long-Term DNAPL Migration in Porous Media

Abstract:When dense nonaqueous phase liquid is released from human activities and infiltrates into groundwater system, its migration is influenced by heterogeneity of aquifer seriously. In this study, an experiment is conducted in two-dimensional heterogeneous translucent granular porous media to explore the long-term migration of perchloroethylene (PCE, 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethene). Porosity of translucent porous media is derived by light transmission micro-tomography method. Afterward, a three-dimensional (3D) right square pyramid microstructure for granular media is developed to obtain the permeability and entry pressure. Representative elementary volume (REV) of translucent granular porous media is estimated using a criterion of relative gradient error (\(\varepsilon_{\text{g}}^{i}\)). Based on the obtained heterogeneities of media and corresponding REV estimation, simulation models with consideration of inner heterogeneities of media and without consideration of inner heterogeneities are compared to reveal the simulation effects. The discretization of simulation region is conducted according to results of REV estimation. Compared with model without consideration of inner heterogeneities, the model based on inner heterogeneities is more capable of characterizing the migration of PCE and is in good agreement with the experiment during the entire long-term contaminant migration including calibration, verification and validation periods. Moreover, observed PCE infiltration and spreading behavior are validated through moment analysis. This study reveals the complexity of PCE behavior during long-term contaminant migration periods and the importance of quantification of media heterogeneity for accurate simulation. Simultaneously, 3D microstructures of porous media should be delineated effectively.
Assessment of shear-thinning fluids and strategies for enhanced in situ removal of heavy chlorinated compounds-DNAPLs in an anisotropic aquifer

Abstract:The removal of chlorinated organic hydrocarbons (COHs) -DNAPLs was studied in permeability-contrasted sandboxes with an egg-box shaped substratum. Aqueous solutions were compared to viscous shear-thinning fluids (xanthan solution and foam). Interfacial and viscous effects were compared by increasing the capillary number of injected fluids. Non-spatially targeted DNAPL recovery (NSTR) where the driving force was the injection pressure, was compared to spatially targeted DNAPL recovery (STR) where a pumping system allowed the controlled flow. A historical contamination made of a complex mixture of COHs and hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) as a model were used. NSTR results showed that DNAPL recovery with non-viscous liquids did not exceed 40%. The best results were obtained for xanthan solutions with surfactant ~ 1.3 ×CMC for which pure phase recovery amounted to 88% and 93% for HCBD and for the historical DNAPL, respectively. The STR strategy showed similar recovery yields, whereas xanthan concentrations were 10-times lower. Mass balances on DNAPL showed that at most, 0.15% of COHs was dissolved in the aqueous effluents. NZVI (1 g.l-1) were delivered in xanthan in view of the chemical degradation of residual COHs and showed a 65% transmission through the low permeability soil.
Steam migration and temperature distribution in aquifers during remediation using steam injection

Abstract:Steam injection technology is commonly used to rapidly remove volatile and semi-volatile organic pollutants in aquifers, and its remediation effect is highly related to steam migration and temperature distribution. However, systematic studies on steam migration and temperature distribution across different types of aquifers are lacking. In this study, the steam migration and temperature distribution in an aquifer were investigated through a series of two-dimensional sandbox experiments with different groundwater velocities, steam injection flow rates, and stratigraphic structures. The experimental results indicated that the temperature distribution in the aquifer was related to the formation permeability and steam injection flow rate. When the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer was lower than 10-3 cm·s-1, the heating zone in the aquifer had an H-shaped distribution, and when it was higher than 10-2 cm·s-1, the heating zone had a V-shaped distribution for a high steam injection flow rate (1 kgh-1), and an H-shaped distribution for a low injection flow rate (0.5 kgh-1). Under the same injection steam flow rate, the total area of the heating zone in the aquifers with different media was in the following order of sand particle size: coarse sand > fine sand > medium sand. Owing to the heat pipe and heat dispersion effects, the heating zone area in the fine sand aquifer was larger than that of the medium sand aquifer. Groundwater velocity did not affect the area of the heating zone. With the increase in groundwater velocity, the heating zone expanded downstream. In layered heterogeneous aquifers, the upper fine and lower coarse structures formed a steam-blocking interface, resulting in steam accumulation and temperature increase in the lower layer. These findings are significant for improving our understanding of steam migration and temperature distribution in aquifers, leading to an improved design and prediction of the steam remediation required for mitigating aquifer pollution.
Quantitative Assessment of Electrical Resistivity Tomography for Monitoring DNAPLs Migration – Comparison with High-Resolution Light Transmission Visualization in Laboratory Sandbox

Abstract:Real-time monitoring of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) migration and distribution is essential for the decision of an effective remediation strategy. Light transmission visualization (LTV) has shown its accuracy and efficiency for measuring DNAPLs saturation and water content in the laboratory, but it cannot be implemented in three dimensional sandbox or field-scale sites. Recently developed electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) has been applied in monitoring the migration and distribution of DNAPLs in bench- and field-scale studies. However, the evaluation of the ability of ERT for monitoring DNAPLs migration by a direct comparison of ERT with high-resolution techniques such as LTV within an experimental system is still lacking. Two sandbox experiments with different permeability conditions are conducted to quantitatively assess the capability of ERT for monitoring the DNAPLs migration. During the injections, LTV method is used to visualize the DNAPLs migration and provide high-resolution saturation data while ERT method is applied to capture the change of resistivity. The results from the comparison between LTV and ERT methods show that ERT is successful in detecting the accumulation and flow bypassing phenomenon around the low-permeability lenses, as well as the penetration through the high permeability lenses. There is a fair correlation between the resistivity and saturation with overall correlation coefficients above 0.6, except at last stage. However, using classical regularization techniques (based on smoothness), the area of DNAPLs plume determined by ERT is commonly overestimated. Compared to the plume around the low-permeability lenses, the plume around the high-permeability lenses estimated by ERT is more extensive due to larger resistivity contrasts. In addition, ERT measurements indicate that the resistivity increase caused by the low-saturation DNAPLs is not apparent enough, which is likely to be covered up under the changing hydrogeochemical environments in field investigations. Abstract:Aquifers composed of porous granular media are important to human beings because they are capable of storing a large amount of groundwater. In this study, fractal models are developed to investigate contaminant transport and surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) for the regular tetrahedron microstructure (RTM) and right square pyramid microstructure (RSPM). The relationships of permeability and entry pressure are derived for these two kinds of 3D microstructures of granular porous media. Afterward, the difference in perchloroethylene (PCE) migration and SEAR efficiency between RTM and RSPM is investigated by the numerical simulation based on a synthetic heterogeneous granular aquifer. Results indicate that PCE penetrates faster and spreads farther in RSPM-based aquifers compared with RTM-based aquifers. Further, SEAR in RTM-based aquifers can achieve remediation efficiencies of 66.129%–92.214% with a mean of 84.324%, which is clearly lower than the SEAR efficiency of 70.149%–94.773% (with a mean of 89.122%) in RSPM-based aquifers. Findings are significant for understanding the 3D microstructure of porous media and how the microstructure of porous media affects macroscopic contaminant behaviors and remediation.

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to study the desorption of dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), TCE in particular, from solid particles in field scale heterogeneous aquifers upon their remediation. A computer program, capable of simulating the fate and transport of NAPLs in porous media, has been developed to work under nonequilibrium sorption conditions. The model has been applied to a field scale site at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, which has been contaminated by DNAPLs. The simulated domain was 155 ft (47.25 m) long, 60 ft (18.29 m) wide, and 15.5 ft (4.72 m) thick. This thickness represents only the saturated zone of the aquifer. Changes in permeability, grain size distribution, and sorptive properties throughout the site have been incorporated into the model. Immediately after the aquifer cleanup, the DNAPL concentration in the aqueous phase was assumed to be zero, and this was considered the start-off time for the simulation. Results show that, with an increase in time, the TCE diffused out of the solid particles, forming a plume. The rate of contaminant diffusion was observed to be very fast at the start, followed by a very slow stage, with a number of years required for substantial desorption of the contaminant from the solid particles. There were local variations in contaminant concentration in the fluid phase across the site due to aquifer heterogeneity. A comparison between numerical results and water samples taken from the site after the end of the cleanup operation is also presented.
Experimental investigations of the entrapment and persistence of organic liquid contaminants in the subsurface environment

Abstract:Organic liquids are common polluters of the subsurface environment. Once released, these nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) tend to become entrapped within soils and geologic formations where they may serve as long-term contaminant reservoirs. The interphase mass transfer from such entrapped residuals will ultimately control environmental exposure levels as well as the persistence and/or remedial recovery of these contaminants in the subsurface. This paper summarizes National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences-sponsored research designed to investigate and quantify NAPL entrapment and interphase mass transfer in natural porous media. Results of soil column and batch experiments are presented that highlight research findings over the past several years. These experiments explore dissolution and volatilization of hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents in sandy porous media. Initial concentration levels and long-term recovery rates are shown to depend on fluid flow rate, soil structure, NAPL composition, and soil wetting characteristics. These observations are explained in the context of conceptual models that describe entrapped NAPL morphology and boundary layer transport. The implications of these laboratory findings on the subsurface persistence and recovery of entrapped NAPLs are discussed.

Abstract:Electrical resistance tomography was used to monitor in-situ remediation processes for removal of volatile organic compounds from subsurface water and soil at the Savannah River Site near Aiken, South Carolina. This work was designed to test the feasibility of injecting a weak mixture of methane in air as a metabolic carbon source for natural microbial populations which are capable of trichloroethylene degradation.Electrical resistance tomograms were constructed of the subsurface during the test to provide detailed images of the process. These images were made using an iterative reconstruction algorithm based on a finite element forward model and Newton-type least-squares minimization. Changes in the subsurface resistivity distribution were imaged by a pixel-by-pixel subtraction of images taken before and during the process. This differential tomography removed all static features of formation resistivity but clearly delineated dynamic features induced by remediation processes.The air-methane mixture was injected into the saturated zone and the intrained air migration paths were tomographically imaged by the increased resistivity of the path as air displaced formation water. We found the flow paths to be confined to a complex three-dimensional network of channels, some of which extended as far as 30 m from the injection well. These channels were not entirely stable over a period of months since new channels appeared to form with time. Also, the resistivity of the air injection paths increased with time.In another series of tests, resistivity images of water infiltration from the surface support similar conclusions about the preferential permeability paths in the vadose zone. In this case, the water infiltration front is confined to narrow channels which have a three-dimensional structure. Here, similar to air injection in the saturated zone, the water flow is controlled by local variations in formation permeability. However, temporal changes in these channels are minor, indicating that the permeable paths do not seem to be modified by continued infiltration.

The transport behaviour of elemental mercury DNAPL in saturated porous media: analysis of field observations and two-phase flow modelling

Abstract:Mercury is a contaminant of global concern. The use of elemental mercury in various (former) industrial processes, such as chlorine production at chlor-alkali plants, is known to have resulted in soil and groundwater contaminations worldwide. However, the subsurface transport behaviour of elemental mercury as an immiscible dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) in porous media has received minimal attention to date. Even though, such insight would aid in the remediation effort of mercury contaminated sites. Therefore, in this study a detailed field characterization of elemental mercury DNAPL distribution with depth was performed together with two-phase flow modelling, using STOMP. This is to evaluate the dynamics of mercury DNAPL migration and the controls on its distribution in saturated porous media. Using a CPT-probe mounted with a digital camera, in-situ mercury DNAPL depth distribution was obtained at a former chlor-alkali-plant, down to 9 m below ground surface. Images revealing the presence of silvery mercury DNAPL droplets were used to quantify its distribution, characteristics and saturation, using an image analysis method. These field-observations with depth were compared with results from a one-dimensional two-phase flow model simulation for the same transect. Considering the limitations of this approach, simulations reasonably reflected the variability and range of the mercury DNAPL distribution. To further explore the impact of mercury's physical properties in comparison with more common DNAPLs, the migration of mercury and PCE DNAPL in several typical hydrological scenarios was simulated. Comparison of the simulations suggest that mercury's higher density is the overall controlling factor in controlling its penetration in saturated porous media, despite its higher resistance to flow due to its higher viscosity. Based on these results the hazard of spilled mercury DNAPL to cause deep contamination of groundwater systems seems larger than for any other DNAPL.
