Abstract:The nanocrystalline ferrites Zn0.4Ni0.6Cr0.5LaxFe1.5-xO4 (x=0 similar to 0.10) were prepared with citrate precursor by sol-gel process. The thermolysis process of translating citrate precursor into crystalline was analyzed by means of DSC-TG. The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of the obtained products were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. The results show that the temperature and the content of doped La have an obvious effect on the crystallite sizes, lattice parameter and morphology of samples. The magnetic properties of the samples can be also tailored by varying the content of La.

Abstract:A fine strontium hexaferrite powder has been successfully synthesized by a sonochemical method employing Fe(CO)5 and SrCO3. SrCO3 was first synthesized using strontium nitrate and urea, and it was found that applying ultrasound radiation during this process results in the uniform formation of SrCO3 hexagonal rods. These rods were then dispersed with in situ generated amorphous Fe2O3, using Fe(CO)5 as the source. The resultant precursor was then calcined at 900°C, which is lower than the conventional solid-state reaction of applying 1300°C to get the strontium hexaferrite fine powder. This sonochemically derived ferrite exhibited an intrinsic coercivity of ∼4600Oe and a saturation magnetization of ∼60emu/g at 20K and ∼32emu/g at 300K.

Abstract:Strontium M-type hexagonal ferrites were synthesized at different calcination temperatures (800°C, 1000°C and 1100°C) using sol-gel autocombustion method. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS) and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer (SQUID) techniques were used to characterize crystal structure, phase composition, morphology and magnetic properties. TGA gives T = 800°C as beginning of suitable calcination. Hexaferrite structure of single phase is obtained according to XRD results for all samples with crystallite size between 28nm and 35nm. SEM images show the growth of grain size with increasing of annealing temperature. (BH)max is calculated based on SQUID results and shows an enhancement between T = 800°C and T = 1000°C of 25%. The magnetic properties observed at low temperature are explained and confirmed by ab-initio calculations.

Abstract:Strontium hexaferrite (SrFe12O19) nanofibres are successfully prepared by the electrospinning method followed by calcination. The effects of Fe3+/Sr2+ molar ratio and calcination temperature on the structure, morphology and magnetic properties are studied. The results indicate that a single phase of strontium hexaferrite is obtained at the Fe3+/Sr2+ molar ratio of 10.6 calcined at 700-1000 degrees C. When the Fe3+/Sr2+ molar ratio and the calcination temperature are 10.6 and 800. C, respectively, SrFe12O19 nanofibres with a maximum coercivity value of 6853 Oe, a relatively high saturation magnetization of 59 emu g(-1) and a remanent magnetization of 35 emu g(-1) are achieved. The plausible mechanisms are given for the formation and variation in magnetic properties of the nanofibres.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline perovskite-type LaFeO3 with particle size of about 30 nm was prepared by a sonochemical method using iron pentacarbonyl and lanthanum carbonate as starting materials. The overall process involves three steps: formation of lanthanum carbonate using lanthanum nitrate and urea; reaction of the so-formed lanthanum carbonate with iron pentacarbonyl resulting in the formation of a precursor; calcination of the precursor to obtain nanocrystalline particles of LaFeO3. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the particles to have a mean size of about 30 nm. Study of the magnetic properties of nanocrystalline LaFeO3 particles shows a coercivity of similar to250 Oe, while the saturation magnetization is similar to40 memu g(-1).

Abstract:Remarkable electrical properties in the hard magnetic materials M hexaferrites have been reported in recent years. To evidence these properties, synthesis processes involving heat treatments at high temperatures (1300 °C) in an oxygen atmosphere have usually been necessary. In this work, using the chemical coprecipitation route, SrFe 12 O 19 hexaferrite powders were synthesized with different Sr/Fe stoichiometric ratios (1/12, 1/11, 1/10.8). These powders were thermally treated between 830 and 1005 °C in air. In correspondence with the nanometric particle sizes of the synthesized powders, high values of saturation magnetization, Ms (~ 72 emu g −1 ), and a maximum coercive field, iHc of 5.9 kOe, were obtained for SrM 1/10.8. The samples with a ratio of 1/10.8 treated at 1005 °C for 2 h in air did not reveal spurious phases, so electrical loops at low fields were performed, which showed an incipient electrical ordering. To favor this aspect, the powders were reheated at 1100 °C for 2 h in air. The polarization vs electrical field curves showed remanent polarization and coercivity values comparable to those previously reported for heat treatments at more elevated temperatures in the presence of oxygen.

Abstract:A pure M-type strontium hexaferrite with nominal composition SrFe 12 O 19 has been prepared via the modified conventional citrate precursor method. The entire work emphasizes on improving the standard of hexagonal ferrite without undergoing high-temperature thermal treatments. By incorporating some adjustments in processing conditions, the prepared sample is sintered at 800 °C and 910 °C, identified through thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA). The impact of the low-temperature sintering process on structural, spectroscopic, and magnetic properties are investigated via using different characterization techniques like XRD, FESEM, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy (RS), and VSM respectively. The XRD confirmed the formation of the M-phase along with some impurities of Fe 2 O 3 and these results are strongly supported via both FTIR and RS. Similarly, FESEM analysis confirmed the formation of densely packed grains some hexagonal platelets. The magnetic properties of SrM hexaferrites show the increment of saturation magnetization M s from 81 emu/g to 92 emu/g as the sintering temperature increases from 800 °C to 910 °C. Apart from the higher M s for SrM hexaferrite, the H c values 107 Oe and 262 Oe respectively are the vital findings of this research. This rare nature of SrM hexaferrite signifies the erection of soft character in hard SrM hexaferrites. Moreover the abrupt increase in the squarenes ratio (SQR) from 0.26 to 0.54 represents the transformation from multidomains to single domain. Material with such properties can be utilized in switching devices, recording media, high frequency applications.

Abstract:High-performance strontium hexaferrites (SrM) was prepared by optimizing the particle size of strontium carbonate (SrCO 3 ) and iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ). The microstructure, morphology, particle size and magnetic properties of as-prepared strontium hexaferrite have been examined. The results showed that fine SrCO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 powders enhanced reactivity and lowered the starting temperature of the reaction. Magnetic result showed that as-prepared strontium hexaferrite with large saturation magnetization and high coercive force was fabricated by using fine SrCO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 powder. The optimum value of saturation magnetization ( M S ) and coercive force ( H C ) are 78.97emu/g and 5019Oe respectively. This study facilitated an energy-saving strategy for large-scale production of high-performance strontium hexaferrites in the future.

Abstract:Sub-micrometre high-performance Sr-ferrite powder was prepared by a molten-salt method using Na2SO4 as the fluxing agent. In the reaction process, a mixture of superfine powder was pre-sintered at 1150 degrees C for 3 h and then annealed at 850 degrees C for 2 h. The as-obtained Sr-ferrite powder is SrFe12O19 with a hexagonal magnetoplumbite structure. We observe that with raising the pre-sintering temperature as well as increasing the annealing temperature and time, there is an enlargement of particle size. We regulated the reaction parameters to optimize the magnetic properties of the Sr-ferrite powder. The structure with the best magnetic properties is quasi-cubic in shape and relatively uniform in size, showing a coercivity of 471.89 kA m(-1), a saturation magnetization of 91.51 mu Wb m kg(-1), a remanence ratio of 0.50 and a maximum magnetic energy product of 7.89 kJ m(-3). We then studied the effects of particle size, demagnetization factor and magnetocrystalline anisotropy on coercivity. Compared with the conventional ceramic process, the one presented here is more convenient and economical for the production of homogeneous hexagonal ferrite powders of high magnetic performance.
Structural, Magnetic, and Dielectric properties of Sr4Fe6O13 ferrite prepared of small crystallites

Abstract:A stable Sr4Fe6O13 was prepared as small crystallites by auto-combustion of a sol-gel in air followed by annealing the later at pertinent temperatures. A green sample, as annealed at elevated temperatures, yields a single Sr4Fe6O13 phase of tailored magnetic properties. The structural, morphological, magnetic and electrical properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, and broadband dielectric spectrometer. Hard magnetic Sr4Fe6O13 properties arise with saturation magnetization Ms = 12.4 emu/g, coercivity Hc = 3956.7 Oe and squareness 0.512. Studies made at low temperatures reveals Ms decreasing on increasing temperature from 17.5 emu/g at 85 K down to 12.4 emu/g at 305 K, while Hc rises from 1483 Oe at 85 K to 1944 Oe at 305 K. The ac-conductivity follows the Jonscher relation. The dc-conductivity at high temperatures/low frequencies exhibits a plateau and it depends linearly on a characteristic frequency according to the Barton-Nakajima-Namikawa) relation.

Abstract:In this study, the role of sonochemical treatment followed by a combustion process adopted for the synthesis of SrSm x Fe 12- x O 19 ( x = 0.01 to 0.03) hexaferrites. We have investigated effect of lightly Sm substitutions on structural, magnetic, optical and dielectric properties in Strontium hexaferrites. X-ray diffraction analysis show M as major phase with impurity. The FTIR analysis shows that the value of force constant increased on both sides (tetra hederal and octa hederal) with the increase of samarium content. The band gap was calculated using Tauc method from UV–Visible spectra. Result shows that as the samarium content increases from x = 0.01 to 0.03 the band gap gradually increases from 2.50 eV 2.91 eV respectively. The surface morphology of prepared Sm substituted SrM nanoparticles was examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy, an average particle size was found to 301 nm, 254 nm, and 285 nm for x = 0.01, 0.02, and 0.03 compositions respectively. High values of M s (53.104 emu/g.) and M r (29.0 emu/g) observed in x = 0.03 sample with low H c of 53.104 Oe. M r /M s values of all samples are >0.5 show that of formed hexaferrite nanoparticles possess single magnetic domain structure. The Sm-doped of the SrFe 12 O 19 compound exhibits a low dielectric constant ( ε ′) ∼ 20 at low frequencies, while it increased with increasing temperature and reached 100 when the Sm content was 0.01, but less than 150 in x = 0.02 and 0.03. The temperature and frequency-dependent dielectric constant confirmed the contributions of different polarization mechanisms.

Abstract:A low-cost and high-efficiency solid reaction method has been reported as an effective technology to synthesize manganese ferrite MnFe2O4 with a spinel crystal structure. This work clarified the underlying reason for the influence mechanism of SiO2 and Al2O3 on the synthesis of MnFe2O4. Synthetic MnFe2O4 polyhedral microparticles with a saturated magnetization of 71.19 emu/g, a ratio of saturation magnetization to residual magnetization (Ms/Mr) of 0.062 and a coercivity (Hc) of 6.50 Oe were successfully obtained at an oxidization roasting temperature of 1100 °C for 60 min. The experimental results indicate that the tetrahedral Mn2+ ions and octahedral Mn3+ ions in the crystal structure of manganese ferrite MnFe2O4 were replaced by tetrahedral Si2+ ions and octahedral Al3+ ions from (Mn2+)x(Fe2+)y(Si2+)1−x−y[Fe3+]2O4 and (Mn2+)[Fe3+]2−x[Al3+]xO4, respectively. In addition, hercynite FexMn1−xAl2O4 with a spinel crystal structure and olivine MnxFe2−xSiO4 with an orthorhombic crystal structure were partially formed in the synthesis of manganese ferrite MnFe2O4, in which some Fe2+ ions were easily replaced by Mn2+ ions to form stable hercynite MnAl2O4 and olivine Mn2SiO4 in these crystal structures. The current research work provides comprehensive insights for synthesizing manganese ferrite MnFe2O4 and continuously advances its technical progress.

Abstract:This paper describes, for the first time, a simple sonochemical method for the synthesis of nanoparticles of a series of rare earth orthoferrites. This sonochemical process is enabling synthesis of nanoparticles of the rare earth orthoferrites at a substantially lower calcination temperature by using simple precursors, iron pentacarbonyl and rare earth carbonates. It is particularly noteworthy that the cogeneration of the garnet phase has not been observed, as is usual with the conventional methods. The drastic reduction in the calcination temperature could be due to the ultrasonic generation of amorphous iron oxide from Fe(CO)(5). Nanosized GdFeO3, ErFeO3, TbFeO3, and EuFeO3 were prepared by this method and their magnetic properties were also studied in detail.

Abstract:Rod-like and platelet-like nanoparticles of simple-crystalline barium hexaferrite (BaFe12O19) have been synthesized by the molten salt method. Both particle size and morphology change with the reaction temperature and time. The easy magnetization direction (00l) of the BaFe12O19 nanoparticles has been observed directly by performing X-ray diffraction on powders aligned at 0.5T magnetic field. The magnetic properties of the BaFe12O19 magnet were investigated with various sintering temperatures. The maximum values of saturation magnetization (σs=65.8emu/g), remanent magnetization (σr=56emu/g) and coercivity field (Hic=5251Oe) of the aligned samples occurred at the sintering temperatures of 1100°C. These results indicate that BaFe12O19 nanoparticles synthesized by the molten salt method should enable detailed investigation of the size-dependent evolution of magnetism, microwave absorption, and realization of a nanodevice of magnetic media.

Abstract:By means of sonochemical method,Fe_3O_4,ZnFe_2O_4 and α-Fe_2O_3 nanocrystallines were synthesized from FeCl_2/urea,ZnCl_2/FeCl_2/urea and FeCl_2·4H_2O/FeCl_3/urea solutions,correspondingly.The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well as selected area electron diffraction (SAED).Special attention was paid to the microstructure of the nanocrystallines using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM).Probable mechanisms for the sonochemical formation of ferrites nanocrystallines were discussed.

Abstract:A hard magnetic system of SrFe 12 O 19 nanomaterial was modified according to the composition of Sr 0.95 Gd 0.05 Fe 12− x Cu x O 19 with x = 0.0, 0.30, and 0.60 using the sol–gel technique. The structures of the samples were evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) along with Rietveld refinement, and an M-type hexaferrite with a hexagonal structure was confirmed with a trace amount of the α-Fe 2 O 3 phase. In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed polycrystalline nanoplates in all samples. Furthermore, the bond structures of the octahedral and tetrahedral sites along with the thermodynamic properties of these ferrites were extracted from the FTIR spectra at room temperature. The Debye temperature ( θ D ) decreased from 755.9 K to 749.3 K due to the co-substitution of Gd 3+ at Sr 2+ and Cu 2+ at Fe 3+ . The magnetic hysteresis ( M – H ) measurements revealed that the coercivity decreased from 5.3 kOe to 1.5 kOe along with the highest magnetization saturation ( M s ) of 65.2 emu g −1 for the composition Sr 0.95 Gd 0.05 Fe 11.7 Cu 0.3 O 19 , which is suitable for industrial application. The effect of local crystalline anisotropy in magnetization was explored using the law of approach to saturation (LAS). Finally, thermo-magnetization was recorded in the range from 400 K to 5 K for cooling under zero field and in the presence of a 100 Oe field, and magnetic transitions were tracked due to the introduction of the foreign atoms of Gd and Cu into SrFe 12 O 19 .

Abstract:This study explores the creation of soft–hard ferrite composites of NiCuZn‐ and strontium hexaferrites ferrite using sol‐gel autocombustion and physical mixing, revealing the coexistence of soft cubic spinel and hard hexagonal phases. Changes in lattice parameters, grain sizes, and strain are observed for different compositions, significantly impacting the composites' magnetic properties, including a marked increase in remanent magnetization, coercivity and exchange‐spring mechanism. A mixture of soft–hard (S–H) ferrites with the general chemical formula (1‐x) Ni0.5Cu0.25Zn0.25Fe2O4 (NCZFO) + (x) SrFe11Y1O19 (SFYO) is developed via sol‐gel auto‐combustion and their physical mixing. X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and two‐probe technique are used to examine the resultant materials. Rietveld refinement of XRD data confirms the co‐existence of both soft and hard phases in the composites. The HRTEM and FESEM results confirm the nanocrystalline nature of the synthesized particles. Williamson‐Hall method is employed to reveal the strain nature in soft and hard phases. VSM analysis shows considerable changes in the magnetic characteristics for the different composition of NCZFO and SFYO. The exchange‐spring mechanism is discussed in the manuscript.

Sol-gel auto-combustion synthesis of Ba–Sr hexaferrite ceramic powders

Abstract:We report the mechanism involved in sol-gel auto-combustion synthesis of Ba–Sr-hexaferrite (Ba1-xSrxFe12O19; x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1, BSFO) ceramic powders through the analysis of the phases evolved during annealing of the as-synthesized powders, along with their structure and morphological studies. The XRD patterns of the as-synthesized samples indicate the formation of barium/strontium monoferrite ((Ba/Sr)Fe2O4) and maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) phases along with a minute amount of hematite (α-Fe2O3) phase. Annealing of these samples facilitates formation of BSFO phase through the solid state reaction between BaFe2O4 and γ-Fe2O3 phase. Interestingly, after annealing the samples with x = 0, 0.5 and 1, at 1000 °C for 2 h, we observed that phase pure Ba–Sr hexaferrite structure forms, but for samples with x = 0.25 and 0.75, high amount of hematite (α-Fe2O3) phase is observed, especially for x = 0.75. The reason associated with this could be the large difference between the ionic radii of Ba2+ and Sr2+ ions occupying the oxygen site. Furthermore, our study on annealing dependent phase evolution confirms that, this difference in ionic radii forbids the formation of a single phase Ba–Sr hexaferrite. The growth of clear hexagonal-shaped plate-like particles with varied particle sizes was observed for all the samples. The particle size variation may be due to the influence of the ionic radii difference on the sinterability of the samples. Our study provides a better understanding of synthesis mechanism of Ba–Sr hexaferrite samples.

Abstract:SrFe12-xCrxO19(x = 0-1.0) hexaferrite nanoparticles have been fabricated using a sol-gel technique for perpendicular magnetic recording. Experimental results have shown that the values of specific saturation magnetization, σs, increase for x ≤ 0.4 as the Cr doping content increases, and reach maximum at x = 0.2, while the coercivity, Hc, decreases for x < 0.5. This feature is favorable to magnetic recording. It is also found that the α-Fe2O3 non-magnetic phase appears after x = 0.6 and remains to be a hexagonal magnetoplumbite phase for x = 0-0.4. Magnetic measurements have revealed that Cr substitution can decrease the magnetization and increase the peak-widening for Hopkinson peak when doped with Cr3+.
