Abstract:The relationship between the operator approximation property and the strong operator approximation property has deep significance in the theory of operator algebras. The original definitions of Effros and Ruan, unlike the classical analogues, make no mention of compact operators or compact sets. In this paper we introduce ``compact matrix sets'' which correspond to the two different operator approximation properties, and show that a space has the operator approximation property if and only if the ``operator compact'' operators are contained in the closure of the finite rank operators. We also investigate when the two types of compactness agree, and introduce a natural condition which guarantees that they do.

Abstract:We extend a theorem of Haagerup and Kraus in the C*-algebra context: for a locally compact group with the approximation property (AP), the reduced C*-crossed product construction preserves the strong operator approximation property (SOAP). In particular their reduced group C*-algebras have the SOAP. Our method also solves another open problem: the AP implies exactness for general locally compact groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we rst prove that approximative compactness and near dentability are equivalent for a Banach space. Then, we present several characterizations that every weak* closed convex subset with non-empty weak* interior in a dual space is either approximatively compact or weakly approximatively compact. Our proofs are based on some subtle techniques in geometry of Banach spaces.

Abstract:We present some sufficient conditions ensuring the upper semicontinuity and the continuity of the Bregman projection operator ΠCg and the relative projection operator PCg in terms of the D-approximate (weak) compactness for a nonempty closed set C in a Banach space X. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for the convexity of a Chebyshev subset of a Banach space X. Our results extend the corresponding results of [H.H. Bauschke, X.F. Wang, J. Ye and X. M. Yuan, Bregman distances and Chebyshev sets, J. Approx. Theory 159 (2009) 3–25] to infinite dimensional spaces.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of the right approximation property with respect to an operator ideal A and solve the duality problem for the approximation property with respect to an operator ideal A, that is, a Banach space X has the approximation property with respect to A(d) whenever X* has the right approximation property with respect to an operator ideal A. The notions of the left bounded approximation property and the left weak bounded approximation property for a Banach operator ideal are introduced and new symmetric results are obtained. Finally, the notions of the p-compact sets and the p-approximation property are extended to arbitrary Banach operator ideals. Known results of the approximation property with respect to an operator ideal and the p-approximation property are generalized.

Abstract:We prove thet a Banach space X has the -bounded compact approximation property (respectively, weak -bounded approximation property) if and only if X has the -Lipschitz bounded compact approximation property (respectively, weak -Lipschitz bounded approximation property). Also, it is shown that the dual space of X has the approximation property if and only if for every separable reflexive Banach space Y , the space of finite rank Lipschitz maps from X to Y is dense in the Lipschitz norm in the space of compact operators from X to Y .

Abstract:We study the Haagerup--Kraus approximation property for locally compact quantum groups, generalising and unifying previous work by Kraus--Ruan and Crann. Along the way we discuss how multipliers of quantum groups interact with the $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebraic theory of locally compact quantum groups. Several inheritance properties of the approximation property are established in this setting, including passage to quantum subgroups, free products of discrete quantum groups, and duals of double crossed products. We also discuss a relation to the weak$^*$ operator approximation property. For discrete quantum groups, we introduce a central variant of the approximation property, and relate this to a version of the approximation property for rigid $\mathrm{C}^*$-tensor categories, building on work of Arano--De Laat--Wahl.

Abstract:Motivated by an observation of Namioka and Phelps on an approximation property of order unit spaces, we introduce the [Formula: see text]-tensor product and the [Formula: see text]-tensor product of two compact matrix convex sets. We define a new approximation property for operator systems, and give a characterization using the [Formula: see text]- and [Formula: see text]-tensor products in the spirit of Grothendieck. Thus, an operator system has the operator system approximation property if and only if it is [Formula: see text]-nuclear in a natural sense.

Abstract:A map of a metric space into itself has the approximate fixed point property (AFPP for short) if every nearly fixed point is close to some fixed point. It is proven that both linear operators acting on finite-dimensional Banach spaces and uniformly expansive linear homeomorphisms on Banach spaces exhibit the AFPP. Furthermore, an illustration is provided of a linear homeomorphism that does not satisfy the AFPP.

Abstract:The uniqueness of positive approximant of a linear boundedoperator in Hilbert space is discussed. For a linear bounded operator in finite-dimensional Hilbert space, we first introduce the definition of exactly positive and give a sufficient and necessary condition by the way of space decomposition of the operator; for infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, we prove that the positive approximant of a non-positive compact operator is not unique.

Abstract:We study a notion analogous to the $p$-Approximation Property ($p$-AP) for Banach spaces, within the noncommutative context of operator spaces. Referred to as the $p$-Operator Approximation Property ($p$-OAP), this concept is linked to the ideal of operator $p$-compact mappings. We present several equivalent characterizations based on the density of finite-rank mappings within specific spaces for different topologies, and also one in terms of a slice mapping property. Additionally, we investigate how this property transfers from the dual or bidual to the original space. As an application, the $p$-OAP for the reduced $C^*$-algebra of a discrete group implies that operator $p$-compact Herz-Schur multipliers can be approximated in $\cb$-norm by finitely supported multipliers.

Approximate Representer Theorems in Non-reflexive Banach Spaces

Abstract:The representer theorem is one of the most important mathematical foundations for regularised learning and kernel methods. Classical formulations of the theorem state sufficient conditions under which a regularisation problem on a Hilbert space admits a solution in the subspace spanned by the representers of the data points. This turns the problem into an equivalent optimisation problem in a finite dimensional space, making it computationally tractable. Moreover, Banach space methods for learning have been receiving more and more attention. Considering the representer theorem in Banach spaces is hence of increasing importance. Recently the question of the necessary condition for a representer theorem to hold in Hilbert spaces and certain Banach spaces has been considered. It has been shown that a classical representer theorem cannot exist in general in non-reflexive Banach spaces. In this paper we propose a notion of approximate solutions and approximate representer theorem to overcome this problem. We show that for these notions we can indeed extend the previous results to obtain a unified theory for the existence of representer theorems in any general Banach spaces, in particular including $l_1$-type spaces. We give a precise characterisation when a regulariser admits a classical representer theorem and when only an approximate representer theorem is possible.

Abstract:We introduce new vanishing subspaces of the homogeneous Hölder space $\dot{C}^{0,\omega}(X,Y),$ in the generality of a doubling modulus $\omega$ and normed spaces $X$ and $Y.$ For many couples $X,Y,$ we show these vanishing subspaces to completely characterize those Hölder functions that admit approximations, in the Hölder seminorm, by smooth, Lipschitz and boundedly supported functions. Beyond the intrinsic interest of these results, we also present connections to bi-parameter harmonic analysis on the Euclidean space and in particular to compactness of the bi-commutator.
